Taylor Tomlinson

Last week, Billboard revealed its year-end Boxscore charts , ranking the top tours, venues, and promoters of 2023. That coverage included analysis of the new wave of genre diverse artists crashing stadium stages, and in turn, our charts. Here, we are breaking down the year’s biggest tours, genre by genre . Today, we continue with comedy.

Comedy is an outlier as a Boxscore genre, as it obviously exists outside of the traditional music industry. That’s not to say that the two don’t intersect – Adam Sandler has been a highly influential in musical comedy since the 1990s – but generally, comedians are playing a different game than Taylor Swift or Beyoncé . Most recently, Bo Burnham ’s genre- and form-blending Inside hit No. 7 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and has logged 125 weeks (to date) at No. 1 on Comedy Albums .

With smaller traveling production, touring comedians have simpler stage setups. That can allow them to float from theaters to arenas and from amphitheaters to clubs from night to night. They can also perform multiple shows per night without the physical and vocal tolls of headlining pop stars. Two of 2023’s top 10 comedians played more than 100 shows during the tracking period, which no other act in the entire all-genre top 100 did.

Comedy’s share of the top 100 tours’ overall gross dipped to 1.8% this year. In part, astronomically rising ticket prices for stadium acts are creating a bigger gap between the biggest touring musicians and comedians who have stayed closer to more conservative pre-pandemic prices. Routing is also key – John Mulaney , Sebastian Maniscalco and Hasan Minhaj had much lighter schedules than in 2022.

Scroll to check out the top 10 highest grossing tours by comedy performers, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. All reported shows worldwide between Nov. 1, 2022 – Sept. 30, 2023, are eligible.

Jo Koy

$13.4M / 198K tickets / 20 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: N/A

Jo Koy played a variety of theaters and arenas in the U.S., mostly promoted by Icon Concerts. He did best on the West Coast, with his six best grosses coming from California, Nevada and Washington.

Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler

$14.2M / 141K tickets / 15 shows

From the global film box office to Billboard Boxscore, Sandler remains one of the most bankable names in comedy. Austin, Dallas and Nashville were highlights on his 2022-23 tour, which continues into next year.

Sebastian Maniscalco

Sebastian Maniscalco

$16.8M / 130K tickets / 39 shows

Maniscalco has been a road warrior over the last decade, but found a home in Vegas. He played 16 shows at the Encore Theater at Wynn Resort, making up almost $3 million of his year-end total. Casinos in New Jersey, Florida and California add to his run.

Taylor Tomlinson

Taylor Tomlinson

$17.5M / 296K tickets / 132 shows

Tomlinson played more shows than any artist on any of the 2023 Boxscore genre breakdowns. Often with multiple shows per night, she ranged from $1 million over two nights at Radio City Music Hall to $25k and 740 tickets in Brussels.

Peter Kay

$20.5M / 276K tickets / 21 shows

Kay hits the middle of the top 10, almost exclusively from shows in England. He repeated throughout the year in major markets such as Manchester, Glasgow and especially in London – in all, he played 10 shows at the O2 Arena during the 2023 tracking period.

Nate Bargatze

Nate Bargatze

$20.6M / 330K tickets / 113 shows

More than 100 shows between November 2022 and September 2023 led to Bargatze’s first hosting gig on NBC’s Saturday Night Live . The Tennessee native played shows in Chattanooga, Johnson City, Memphis and Nashville, plus more than 60 others during the year.

Bill Burr

$20.6M / 231K tickets / 37 shows

A mix of theaters, arenas and casinos scored Burr his second consecutive year at No. 4 on the comedy breakdown. He peaked at $1.5 million on July 7-8 at the Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena in Atlantic City, N.J.

Bert Kreischer

Bert Kreischer

$32.9M / 460K tickets / 80 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 82

A scan of Kreischer’s top markets of 2023 doesn’t find New York or Los Angeles or Chicago or any other typically major market. His strongest showings were in Tempe, Ariz.; Gilford, N.H.; Tampa, Fla. and St. Louis, Mo.

Dave Chappelle

Dave Chappelle

$36.6M / 254K tickets / 19 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 68

Chappelle made lemonade out of very few lemons, playing fewer shows than anyone in the top 10 other than Sandler. He did it by sticking to arenas exclusively, only dipping below 10,000 tickets at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, Calif. (9,862). Four shows at Madison Square Garden earned $7.9 million and moved 49,000 tickets.

Kevin Hart

$67.5M / 631K tickets / 82 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 29

Yet again, Kevin Hart takes the lead, making him the only act to repeat atop a Boxscore genre chart in 2023. Hart played as many shows as Kreischer and demanded high ticket prices like Chappelle and Sandler, amounting to an 84% lead over his closest competition. In all, he reported 27 engagements with more than 10,000 tickets sold, and 30 over the $1 million mark.

Recent "Saturday Night Live" hosts and " The Daily Show " correspondents are among the comedians heading to a city near you, including one comic embarking on the last tour of his career. These are the stand-up tours you won't want to miss this winter.

Joe Pera easily wins the award for greatest tour name of the season, as the comedian is heading out on what he dubs "The Peras Tour." "I might get sued for this," he said of the tour's name referencing Taylor Swift's "Eras Tour," but it was "too good of an opportunity to pass up." It's safe to say the crowds won't be as intense as at the actual "Eras Tour," but Pera's performances begin on Jan. 25 in Madison, Wisconsin.

Comedy Central Roast mastermind Anthony Jeselnik will continue bringing his brand of shock humor on the road with his "Bones and All" tour , which has shows set in the coming months in cities that include Boston and San Diego.

"The Daily Show" correspondent Ronny Chieng hits the road in January with his " Love to Hate It Tour ," which starts in Indianapolis on Jan. 12 before heading to Cincinnati, New York City and more locations. " M3GAN " fans won't want to miss it.

He's back in black one last time. Lewis Black has announced what he claims will be the final stand-up tour of his career. "I thought the road would go on forever, well I was wrong about that," he said . "And the fact is as hard as the road may be to be on, it's harder to leave it." After hanging up the mic, Black, 75, plans to write a play and a new book and expand his podcast, according to his website. His " Goodbye Yeller Brick Road" tour , a reference to Elton John's song "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and farewell tour "Farewell Yellow Brick Road," begins in January.

Coming off his fifth Netflix special, "Sledgehammer," Tom Segura's " Come Together" tour begins on Dec. 30 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He'll be performing new material on the tour, which after Hawaii will head to Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore before coming to North America with shows in Corpus Christi, Albuquerque and more U.S. cities.

Ralph Barbosa debuted his first Netflix comedy special, "Cowabunga," in October, and according to Deadline , it debuted at #3 on Netflix's Top 10 television chart. Starting in January, you can see the comic on his " The Super Cool Ass Tour ," which consists of all-new material. "Nothing you've seen on the last tour, nothing you've seen on Netflix," he told fans on TikTok . "I wouldn't do that to you, baby. I'm gonna give you new jokes. I love you."

Former "Daily Show" correspondent Hasan Minhaj had a controversial 2023 after the New Yorker reported that many of the stories he has told in his stand-up were fabricated. But he isn't slowing down with performances, as the comedian will be on the road with his "Off With His Head" tour . It continues into the new year with a show in Chicago on January 12th, and Minhaj has performances scheduled through the summer.

Take your pick of "Daily Show" correspondents to see live, as Roy Wood Jr. and Jordan Klepper are also headlining the " America: For The Last Time Tour ," a five-city tour that begins on Jan. 12 and that they describe as "evenings of comedy celebrating America before it explodes and sinks into the ocean."

Nate Bargatze is coming off a big fall after making his "Saturday Night Live”" hosting debut in October. If you enjoyed his appearance, he has plenty of dates on his " Be Funny Tour " in December and into January, where he'll kick off the year with shows in Columbus, Cincinnati and Charlotte.

Kathy Griffin is ready to turn her tragedy into comedy with " My Life on The PTSD-List ," which begins on Feb. 2 in Des Moines and which she noted will be her first tour in six years. "I've been through hell, we've all been through hell!" said Griffin, who underwent surgery for lung cancer in 2021 and revealed in 2023 that she was diagnosed with PTSD. "Now let's have a good laugh about it."

Brendan worked as a culture writer at The Week from 2018 to 2023, covering the entertainment industry, including film reviews, television recaps, awards season, the box office, major movie franchises and Hollywood gossip. He has written about film and television for outlets including Bloody Disgusting, Showbiz Cheat Sheet, Heavy and The Celebrity Cafe.

Max: Jean Smart's Hacks is the most-watched series in the United States

Max comedy productions are among the most preferred by platform users. This holds true for “Hacks,” which premiered its third season a few days ago and has already become the No. 1 series in the United States .

The show has been praised by its followers not only for its good mix of laughter and drama , but also for addressing emotional topics such as identity struggles and the challenges of aging .

According to IMDb, “Hacks” has won 54 awards and earned 138 nominations from various respected entertainment events around the world, including the Emmys and the Critics Choice Awards . This number will likely continue to grow in the next edition of these prestigious celebrations.

Hacks ranked No. 1 on Max in the United States

Everything Jean Smart touches turns to gold. Therefore, it’s no surprise to see “Hacks,” the show she has led since 2021, as the No. 1 series on Prime Video US.

Remarkably, it has surpassed the viewership of the docuseries “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst,” which typically holds top spots due to its controversy. However, according to FlixPatrol statistics, it’s very likely that “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” will reclaim the first place, as it garners a massive number of views when each episode airs.

The comedy series revolves around Deborah Vance , a legendary stand-up comedian who must adapt her acts and jokes to appeal to newer generations. To help with this, she is paired with young writer Ava Daniels , who struggles to find work after being canceled for an insensitive tweet.

Jean Smart portrays Deborah, while Hannah Einbinder plays Ava. The rest of the cast delivers stellar performances, featuring Carl Clemons-Hopkins , Paul W. Downs , and Megan Stalter , among others.

“Hacks” premiered the first two episodes of its third season on May 2 and will continue to release episodes weekly until May 30 . Any information about a potential fourth season has not yet been disclosed.

That’s right, it’s Eras Tour time again for Taylor Swift fans with a stop in Paris.

She’s back on the road for more of the international leg of the tour that’s made stops in Asia and Australia as of late, and while we’re not sure about whether her boyfriend Travis Kelce will be there or not, we know some things: who her opening act is and what time the concert in France.

We’re going to use East Coast time here — it’s six hours ahead in Paris. So it’s supposed to start at 6:30 p.m. Paris time, which means it’ll be 12:30 p.m. East Coast time.

There you have it!

Set List: Morgan Wallen’s One Night at a Time Tour

What’s one sign of a country music superstar? A world tour with so much momentum, it just feels wrong to end it. Such is the case with Morgan Wallen’s blockbuster One Night at a Time tour, which was announced in late 2022 and had been extended before it even kicked off. After a massive 2023 that brought him from Sydney to Saskatoon, the hitmaker tacked on additional shows that carry the tour through August 2024 (among them, stops in Nashville, Tampa, and the Stagecoach music festival). His guest list is star-studded (the rotation of supporting acts includes Jelly Roll, Bailey Zimmerman, and Lainey Wilson, among others), but let’s be real: Wallen doesn’t need any help filling seats. Explore the full set list here and put yourself in the crowd.
