What a calender for 2024.

Does anyone know where to find a comprehensive list of where fans can watch each race? What races are on Flo bikes, or NBC, or whatever.

2024 Pro Cycling Calendar

Here’s the 2024 pro cycling calendar. You can subscribe or download an iCal file to import the same calendar into your organiser, phone and computer diary. All of the UCI men’s and women’s pro races around the world are included.

inrng pro race calendar menu

There is a permanent link to the calendar at the top of the inrng.com home page if you just want to visit from time to time ( mobile users : tap “menu” at the top of the page for the drop down menu and then > Pro Cycling Calendar) .

iCal An iCal is a calendar file that you can store on your phone or electronic diary like Outlook or Calendar. There are several ways to get this on to your computer or phone.

Subscribe and get automatic updates : The recommended option is to subscribe by copying the iCal URL :

https://calendar.google.com/calendar/ical/372129ce15ae495d7a21c14a24f777773bbcb8dba7d0606c52b20a3fd1ceee2b%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics

The descriptions below should help but with device and software update they might not always be the exact path.

  • If you use MacOS copy the URL… and open the Calendar app. Then got to File > New Calendar Subscription…) and paste in the link and you’re done
  • iPhone/iPad users should push and hold down a finger here , wait for the pop up message and select “Copy Link”. Then on your device go to settings > calendar > accounts  > add account > other > add subscribed calendar > paste in the URL in the server field
  • If you use Microsoft Outlook on the web copy the URL and then go to Calendar/Calendar icon > Open Calendar > From Internet > and paste the URL to subscribe > OK > Yes
  • Google Calendar : If you use Google Calendar then click on the icon on the bottom-right of the calendar up at the top of the page. Note this method can work with Android phones when the iCal file might not although you might need the Google Sync calendar app.

The subscription methods above are the best because any additions, deletion and amendments will automatically be pushed to your diary or device. Sadly races will get cancelled, some shortened and others moved. It’s all on Google, you’re not downloading a file or importing data from this blog.

Subscribe and any changes will be fed through automatically .

Direct download : if you can’t do the above, you can download the iCal file for your organiser, phone, computer and other devices from here.

That’s the URL above or right-click here to save the ics / iCal / iCalendar file and you can import it into your electronic diary. If you have trouble with the subscription then this is an easier option but it means you’re saving today’s version of the calendar and it’s bound to change so you should download the new version a few times a year in order to get the amendments and corrections.

uci world tour calendar 2024

Calendar Labels Explained Each race is listed along with its location and UCI status eg World Tour, Pro Series or 2.1.

  • Any race with the 1. prefix, like 1.UWT, 1.Pro, 1.1 is a one day race; any race with the 2. prefix like 2.WWT, 2.Pro, 2.1 is a stage race
  • UWT means the men’s World Tour and includes all the prime races on the calendar, from the three grand tours (Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, Vuelta a España) to the one day classics like Paris-Roubaix, the Tour of Flanders and Il Lombardia, as well as others like the Tour of Poland or the Tour Down Under and can be anywhere in the world. Normally all men’s WorldTeams must ride, organisers must invite the best two UCI ProTeams from 2023, Lotto-Soudal and Israel-PremierTech, and then wildcard invites can go to other UCI ProTeams and in a few cases, national teams of the host country.
  • WWT means Women’s World Tour. At least eight Women’s World Tour teams start and all races are required to be broadcast live
  • After this comes the UCI ProSeries, men and women. Up to 70% of the starting teams can be WorldTeams for the men. A minimum of four Women’s WorldTeams must start but no more than ten.
  • Then come races grouped by region for men with the UCI Asia Tour, UCI America Tour, UCI Africa Tour and UCI Oceania Tour and UCI Europe Tour and here the *.1 races are included where up to half the starting teams can be WorldTeams
  • For the women the 1.1 one day and 2.1 wstage races can have between of one World Tour team invited and a maximum of five women’s World Tour teams; the rest of the field is women’s continental teams, national squads as well as regional or club teams
  • There are lower level pro-am *.2 races, U23s, criteriums and more but only the pro calendar is included.
  • “ Why are the races listed as all day events? ” – It’s impossible to know today whether a race is slated to finish at, say, 4pm or 5.15pm so there’s no point guessing the precise slot, it’s easier to list them as all day events
  • “ Help, my phone rings at midnight with an alert ” – by default notifications are turned off but check your device settings in case you’ve accidentally switched them on as you probably don’t need a midnight alert for the Gooikse Pijl
  • “ I only want the World Tour races “, “ I don’t want the women’s races ” etc: some readers email in special requests but this would require running multiple calendars. Just keeping one updated is an admin job in itself
  • “ I subscribed to your 2023 calendar, can’t you just add next year’s races to save me from subscribing again? ” This is possible but it means you’d end up with a diary with hundreds of dormant entries from the past. It’s lighter on data and faster to do it year-by-year. Subscribing anew should take you less time to do than it took you to read this bullet point
  • “ The date for such-and-such race is wrong “. The UCI calendar is provisional, dates change plus it’s possible something got bungled when typing everything by hand. If you spot a change or a typo please email so it can be fixed for everyone, it’s really helpful

UCI Road World Championships 2024 - Elite Men's Time Trial contenders

The big engines are set to go against the clock in Zurich

The 2024 UCI Road World Championships begin on Sunday September 22, with the elite women and men time trials.

Remco Evenepoel defends the title he won in Glasgow in 2023 and is the rider to beat in the men's race after his Paris Olympic success. His big rivals include Vuelta a España winner Primož Roglič , Italy's Filippo Ganna and local hero Stefan Küng .

The 46.1km men's course begins in the historic Zurich Oerlikon outdoor velodrome to the north of the city and then heads along Lake Greifensee before climbing over a hill and through a forest to descend to the shores of Lake Zurich.

The final 15km are flat and fast, following the lake shore and riding through a residential area. The finish is in the large Sechselautenplatz, near the Opera house.

The 46.1km course includes 413m of climbing and three time checks after 12.5km, 26.6km at the top of the climb, and 36.7km on the lake shore. Riders will be able to do a final reconnaissance of the course on Saturday afternoon to dial in their schedules and study the climb and the key corners.

These are the Cyclingnews contenders for the elite men's time trial.

Remco Evenepoel (Belgium)

Evenepoel is still only 24 but continues his fast-track career development. In 2024 he made his Tour de France debut and finished third overall before winning double gold in the time trial and road race at the Paris Olympics.

He arguably now stands equal with Tadej Pogačar as the stars of the men's peloton and the two will clash in the road race at the Zurich World Championships the week after the time trial.

Evenepoel is perhaps not at his very best after his successful summer but remains the favourite for the time trial world title. He suffered at the Tour of Britain on his return to racing but missed the European Championships so that he could his one last peak at the World Championships.

Stefan Küng (Switzerland)

Küng flies the flag for Switzerland and offers the home nation the best chance for a medal.

His horrific crash at the 2023 European Championships and his injuries are now in the past and he returned to his time trialing best in 2024 as well as impressing in the cobbled Classics.

Küng was only eighth in the rain-soaked Olympic time trial but won the final time stage at the Vuelta a España and was second in the European Championships behind Eduardo Affini of Italy.

He was spotted studying the Zurich course on Monday to gain an advantage on his rivals and will surely be a medal contender.

Primož Roglič (Slovenia)

The Slovenian is arguably no longer a time trial specialist and may be tired after his Vuelta a España battle with Ben O'Connor. But Roglič should never be written off in a race against the clock.

He was third in the Tour de France time trial behind Evenepoel and Pogačar before crashing out and second in the final Vuelta time trial.

Slovenia hopes to win double world titles in the elite men's races. Pogačar is the hot favourite for the road race and if Evenepoel is not at his very best, Roglič could win the rainbow jersey.

Filippo Ganna (Italy)

Despite suffering from fatigue in the later summer after targeting the time trial and the team pursuit at the Olympics, Ganna is expected to ride the time trial in Zurich to try to end his season on a high.

He has recently spent time at altitude and is due to train on the track in Italy this week to polish his form for the World Championships.

Evenepoel beat Ganna by 12 seconds in Glasgow last year, largely due to the Belgian's better aero position and lower CdA but Ganna has been back in the wind tunnel and can generate significantly more raw power. The mid-race climb could see Ganna lose a few seconds but he could roar to victory along the shores of Lake Zurich.

Brandon McNulty (USA)

The US national champion had to suffer to finish the Vuelta a España after a nasty crash in the third week and another in the final time trial. But he confirmed his time trial talents by winning the opening stage in the Vuelta and in June when he won the US national title and finished fifth in the Olympic time trial .

McNulty was the Junior world time trial champion in Doha in 2016 and is still improving as a rider year on year. He will have the support of the UAE Team Emirates performance unit in Zurich, even while racing for the USA and that could offer a significant advantage against his professional rivals.

Victor Campenaerts (Belgium)

It will be fascinating to see Campenaerts slog about his world championships alongside Evenepoel and fascinating to see what he can do in the Zurich time trial.

The 32-year-old is enjoying an inspired season after becoming a father and won a road stage in the Tour de France due to his performance skills, aggression and love of a challenge.

He always applies those qualities to time trials even if he was off the pace in the Vuelta time trials and the European Championships.

Tobias Foss (Norway)

Foss was a surprise world champion in Wollongong in 2022, even surprising Evenepoel. He has still to return to that level but should never be written off.

The mid-course hill on the Zurich course perhaps suits him better than many of the bigger rouleur riders and so he is a contender for a top-five result.

Jay Vine (Australia)

Vine has survived a rollercoaster 2024 season but is now on a high and with Luke Plapp out of action, he will race in the Australian green and gold in Zurich.

Vine suffered serious vertebrae fractures in the Itzulia Basque Country crash, fought his way back to fitness and then won the mountains jersey at the Vuelta a España. Like Campenaerts, he appears inspired after becoming a father and perhaps has the form to land a surprise result in Zurich.

Vine is known as a climber and stage racer but won the Vuelta a Burgos time trial on his return to racing in August and was the Australian time trial title in 2023.

Josh Tarling (Great Britain)

Britain's Josh Tarling cycles as he competes in the men's road cycling individual time trial during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, on July 27, 2024. (Photo by JULIEN DE ROSA / AFP)

The 20-year-old Welsh rider is the latest revelation in men's time trialing. He was third in Glasgow last year and then won the European title while still a teenager.

Like his Ineos Grenadiers teammate Filippo Ganna, Tarling is a time trialist who combines power with naturally developed aerodynamics and the mental strength to tackle the pain of time trials.

Tarling was almost in tears after a puncture cost him a medal in the Paris Olympics . He was off the pace in the opening Vuelta a España time trial and crashed out on his Grand Debut but has been quietly working towards the Zurich World Championships.

Worlds 2024 Set To Test Toughest Cyclists

The 2024 World Championships in Zurich this September is shaping up to be one of the hardest in years, and it will surely bring out the toughest riders to fight for the win. Riders like Tour de France king Tadej Pogacar will go head to head with Remco Evenepoel, fresh off his Olympic victory.

Let's dive into the course, the key riders, and how you can make sure you don't miss any of the action.

2024 UCI Road World Championships

A tough course awaits.

This year's event comes one year after the Glasgow Super Worlds, where Mathieu van der Poel handled his rivals—and a crash—to pull off a solo win. He's back, but even he admits the course may be a bit too much for him just one year later in Switzerland.

The action runs from September 21 to 29, with the big events—the women's and men's road races—on the final two days. The men's race covers a massive 274km, making it one of the longest races on the calendar, just under the 288km of Milano-Sanremo, which was won by Jasper Philipsen this spring. But this race features a staggering 4470 meters of climbing—about 1000 meters more than Glasgow in 2023.

The course starts northeast of Zurich in Winterthur, with a big loop before heading towards Lake Zurich. Once on the city circuit, a 27km-long loop raced clockwise seven times, the action will unfold. There are two notable climbs: The first is 1.1km long with an average gradient of 8%, topping out at 15%. The second climb, after a brief descent, is slightly longer at 2.3km with an average gradient of 5.7%. Both climbs will provide opportunities for attacks and for the stars to lay down the law.

Tadej Pogacar Races For Triple Crown At Zurich Worlds

The men's race will take place on the final day, Sunday the 29th, while the women's race will be held the day before. The women will start closer to town and cover 154.1 kilometers with 2384 meters of climbing. After a loop of the nearby lake, they’ll reach Zurich for four laps on the 27km circuit.

Weather forecasts are rough at this point, but we can expect temperatures around 20°C (68°F) and a chance of rain, along with some Swiss sunshine.

It's hard to overlook Tadej Pogacar as the outright favorite for the men's race. He won the Giro d'Italia in May and the Tour de France in July. If Pogacar wins the Worlds, he would be only the third rider to take the Triple Crown, joining Eddy Merckx (1974) and Stephen Roche (1987). Judging by his victory in the GP Montreal, he’s back on form after the Tour.

The Worlds come down to how national teams gel and collaborate. These aren’t the usual trade teams like Jumbo-Visma or Movistar—this is Slovenia versus Denmark. Pogacar’s Slovenian team includes none other than Primoz Roglic, fresh off his win in the Vuelta a España. They can work off each other, with my guess being Roglic stirring things up in the final 30km, setting Pogacar up to deliver the final blow.

uci world tour calendar 2024

Top Riders For Zurich Worlds 2024

Hot favorite Remco Evenepoel will have to do without his Belgian teammate Wout van Aert, who crashed in the Vuelta. But Remco has gained experience over the past two years and is more than capable of leading Team Belgium.

The US will go in strong with Matteo Jorgenson, Magnus Sheffield, and Neilson Powless, while Canada will field Mike Woods and Derek Gee. Denmark is always a force at the Worlds: they’ll have their soldiers setting up their snipers—Mads Pedersen, Mattias Skjelmose, and Magnus Cort.

Van der Poel admits he’s not the top favorite after battling hard at the Paris Olympics against Evenepoel. Compared to Glasgow 2023 and Paris, this course is tougher, but he says he'll come in a little lighter to be prepared. Similarly, watch out for Michael Matthews (Australia) and Biniam Girmay (Eritrea).

Racing on home roads, Swiss rider Marc Hirschi is one of the hottest names at the moment, winning the last five races he’s entered, including the Clásica San Sebastián.

Women’s World Championships 2024 Favorites

On the women’s side, Belgium's Lotte Kopecky has a great chance of repeating her 2023 win on this tough course. Australia has a strong duo in Grace Brown and Amanda Spratt, backed by a stacked team.

All eyes will be on US star Kristen Faulkner after her gold medal in Paris. Her team includes Lauren Stephens and Ruth Winder. And of course, keep an eye on Danish star Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig.

Don't Miss The Worlds 2024 Action

FloBikes will show the race live and on-demand for all of our viewers in the US and Canada. Wall-to-wall coverage starts September 21 and continues through the men’s race on the 29th.

Will Pogacar take the title, Van der Poel make magic, or Evenepoel pull off a Paris double? There's a lot at stake, and a lot of drama is expected in the upcoming 2024 World Championships.

A guide to the UCI World Tour calendar with major pro road bike races

A guide to the UCI World Tour calendar with major pro road bike races

Late winter — early spring, depending on the region of the world, is the beginning of professional road cycling races season, inspiring millions of amateurs who alternate their own training and bikepacking trips with watching races on TV. Well, like me, for example.

However, given the variety of cycling competitions in different formats, it is easier to get lost in the calendar than to understand it by missing your favorite or most important race of the season. Just try to answer the question yourself: which comes first: Amstel Gold Race or Paris-Roubaix? And what kind of races are these, anyway?

To prevent this from happening to you, read this guide to the UCI World Tour calendar with major pro road bike races. Bookmark it on your browser — you’ll still need it, the season is almost a full year and will last until November. In the end, you will also find an exact competition calendar with dates and other useful information. But first: what is this Tour?

The UCI World Tour is the main event or rather a season in professional road cycling, which takes place every year for 9 months from January to November around the world, but mainly in Europe as the central (and simply the best) region for the sport. If you are skiing or surfing, it’s like the Freeride World Tour and World Surf League.

UCI stands for Union Cycliste Internationale (International Cycling Union), which is the main world cycling organization that holds the Tour, but also almost all other competitions. Check your bike and you will find its emblem on it, which means it is approved for competition. UCI is headquartered in the small town of Aigle in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

In 2023 the UCI calendar consists of 35 races of different formats, durations, and importance. The figure is not constant and varies from year to year with the removal of some events and the addition of others. For example, the Classic Brugge-De Panne race moved to the World Tour from the lower division (which I will also mention at the end of the guide) in 2019, and the RideLondon-Surrey Classic in the UK has dropped off the calendar, and so on.

So let’s break it all down, using the most recent version as an example. But keep in mind that there may be changes in the future, so we will also briefly describe other important UCI races.

Three Grand Tours, plus individual stages

The Grand Tours are the three main professional bike races in the entire world of cycling. The list include the Tour de France , the Giro d’Italia , and the Vuelta a España — in order of importance and popularity. If you arrange them chronologically, the last one is in Spain in September and will remain in its place, and the French Tour in July and the Italian Giro in May will switch places. All three races are three weeks long and consist of 21 stages plus a few rest days. The winner is determined by the overall best time. In other words, it’s like 63 separate races! Winning a Grand Tour stage is just as incredibly prestigious as winning the individual one-day races listed below.

  • Tour de France, France
  • Giro d’Italia, Italy
  • Vuelta a España, Spain

Five cycling Monuments (Monument Classics)

The Cycling Monuments are five of the most prestigious one-day races in the world, also called Monument Classics for the reason that each is also a classic cycling race, of which there are few. "Classic" means a great history, popularity, and so on, and as a consequence prestigious to participate and win. The location of each race is also easy to guess from their names, but if you are not a geography expert, here and hereafter I have indicated the countries. To win at least one of these races is like going around the world on foot — in theory, every regular hiker can do it, but in fact, there are probably no more than 100 people in the world who actually did it, because it is very, very long and difficult.

  • Milan-San Remo, Italy
  • Tour of Flanders, Belgium
  • Paris-Roubaix, France
  • Liège-Bastogne-Liège, France
  • Giro di Lombardia, Italy

Eleven classic bike races (Classics)

Classic bike races, or simply Classics for short, are actually the main body of one-day professional bike races, which include, first, as I just noticed, all five of the above-mentioned Monuments, as well as several dozen other races, of which 11 can be found in the 2023 World Tour calendar. So there are quite a few of them. Classic races are divided according to two main criteria: season and road surface. In the latter case, in particular, there are Cobbled Classics — routes consisting partly of cobbles in northern France,  Belgium, and the Netherlands, which are the main countries for the Classics. There is also at least one gravel race — the Strade Bianche (the White Road) in Tuscany, Italy, named so because of the clouds of white dust raised by riders.

Six spring Classics

  • Strade Bianche, Italy
  • Classic Brugge-De Panne, Belgium
  • E3 Saxo Bank Classic (ex-E3 Harelbeke), Belgium
  • Gent-Wevelgem, Belgium
  • Amstel Gold Race, Netherlands
  • La Flèche Wallonne, Belgium

Two summer Classics

  • Clásica de San Sebastián, Spain
  • EuroEyes Cyclassics (Hamburg Cyclassics), Germany

Three autumn Classics

  • Bretagne Classic Ouest, France
  • Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec (Laurentian Classics), Canada
  • Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal (Laurentian Classics), Canada

Four semi-classic bike races

In addition to the Classics, the UCI has several other one-day races on the calendar, which are of a lower level but are also considered prestigious. Sometimes they are called the Semi-classics or Elite races. For example, it is the first one-day race in the entire UCI season, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, named after perhaps the most famous cyclist from this country who won the Tour de France in 2011. It takes place on the famous scenic road along the Pacific Ocean at the very end of January. By the way, you can say "scenic" about the routes of almost all professional bike races, so they can be used by amateurs.

  • Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, Australia
  • Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Belgium
  • Dwars door Vlaanderen, Belgium
  • Eschborn-Frankfurt (ex-Rund um den Henninger Turm Frankfurt), Germany

Twelve bike stage races

Bike stage races are the last and largest group of races in the UCI calendar, which last from a few days to a week and more. You could say that they are a kind of “shortened by three times Grand Tours” — also in terms of geography because they focus on certain regions of France, Italy, and Spain. These races are also taking over more countries, including Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and even China. These races are also considered training races for the Grand Tours, and their winners can often be used to predict the best riders of the latter. Such races are also easily identified by the same words "Tour", "Giro", "Vuelta" or "Volta", and similar in their names.

  • Tour Down Under, Australia
  • UAE Tour, United Arab Emirates
  • Paris-Nice, France
  • Tirreno-Adriatico, Italy
  • Volta a Catalunya, Spain
  • Vuelta al Pais Vasco (Basque Country), Spain
  • Tour de Romandie, Switzerland
  • Critérium du Dauphiné, France
  • Tour de Suisse, Switzerland
  • Tour de Pologne, Poland
  • Benelux Tour, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg
  • Tour of Guangxi, China

uci world tour calendar 2024

As a result, the 2023 UCI World Tour calendar includes the three Grand Tours, five Monument classic one-day bike races, 13 classic one-day races (10 in Europe, two in Canada, and one in Australia), and 13 bike stage races (10 in Europe, one in the United Arab Emirates, one in China, and one in Australia).

Just for the big picture and a better understanding of the World Tour races: in addition to it, UCI also conducts about a hundred other large and prestigious races in two lower divisions: UCI ProSeries and UCI Continental Circuits. These are both one-day and multi-day races united on different principles. In the second case — by five continents, as the name suggests: Africa, America, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Let's break it down.

Other Classics and Semi-classics. Among the most famous races are, first, many other classic and semi-classic, and elite bike races, which take place in the same countries as World Tour races, in all three parts of the season, but mostly in spring and autumn, as in summer all the attention of cycling fans is focused on the Tour de France. For example, these are Clásica de Almería in Spain; Milano-Torino and Giro del Piemonte in Italy, Nokere Koerse in Belgium; Grand Prix de Fourmies and Paris-Tours in France, Münsterland Giro in Germany; and Japan Cap.

It is also important to note that it is not always possible to draw a clear line between classic and semi-classic bike races. In particular, the latter may contain the word “Classic” in the name. Also, as you may have noticed yourself, some one-day races, including one Monument, may have the word "Tour" in the name.

Season Openers.  Among the one-day races, there are also separate so-called "Season Openers", that is, the first race of the season in each country. These races are important precisely for that reason, although they are not part of the World Tour, except for a few. So in France it is Grand Prix Cycliste La Marseillaise; in Belgium — Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (World Tour) and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne; in Italy — Trofeo Laigueglia; in Spain — Trofeo Pollença. But even before the season starts in Australia, where it is the already mentioned Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (World Tour), for which it is, on the contrary, the fall race and one of the last races of the outgoing cycling season.

Other bike stage races.  Second, there are also over three dozen other bike stage races in different countries and geographic regions. For example, one of my favorite home races, the  Tour of the Alps , across the  Euroregion Trentiro-South Tyrol-Tyrol  takes place every year in April and consists of 5 stages. If you’re a longtime cycling fan, you already know it as the ex-Giro del Trentino. As you can see, the race has expanded geographically (as well as changed all the branding — from blue to eco-friendly green — in the spirit of the times), which shows its growing popularity.

There is a very high chance that you can also find a UCI race in your country or region , even in some “exotic” places in terms of cycling that are usually less or not at all associated with the sport by the mass outdoor enthusiast, including cold Scandinavia (Danmark Rundt, Tour of Norway, and others) and the Baltics (Tour of Estonia); the hot and desolate Middle East (Tour of Qatar / Oman / Abu Dabi, and others) and distant Latin America (Vuelta a Colombia, and others).

UCI Road World Championships.  Last, but by no means least, UCI also organizes the Road World Championships, which take place every year in a different country. In the past 2022, it was Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, in this 2023 it will be Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom, between August 3 and 13. The world champion can be recognized in the peloton by the “rainbow” jersey in UCI colors, which he/she will wear throughout the next year.

So here's your exact UCI World Tour calendar for 2023 with dates, formats and other features.  The dates are more or less the same every year , so you can use it for navigation of the best bike races of the 2024, 2025 and all the following seasons.

2024 UCI Road World Championships in Zurich: Preview, top riders, schedule, how to watch live

The Canton of Zürich plays host to the 2024 Road World Championships, and for the first time ever, the Para-Cycling Road World Championships will take place concurrently as part of a single combined event.

Remco Evenepoel poses with his 2023 World Championships gold

This year's 2024 UCI Road World Championships , being held in Zurich, Switzerland, mark a special occasion: it is the first time the UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships is being held alongside the non-adaptive version of the sport as a single combined event.

The rainbow jersey will be awarded a total of 11 times in road cycling in addition to another 53 in Para-cycling from 21 to 29 September 2024.

Five elite world titles are on offer: men's and women's individual time trials, men's and women's road races, and the mixed relay team time trial.

Zurich, the main host city, will be the finish line for all major races, although the elite time trials and road races will begin elsewhere within the Canton of Zürich.

Notably, the men's double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel is also the defending time trial world champion and will once again be a threat. On the women's side, both Olympic champions Grace Brown (ITT) and Kristen Faulkner (road race) are expected in the field.

Discover what you can expect from the elite races, both in terms of potential challengers and the course layouts.

Men's elite category riders to watch at 2024 UCI Road World Championships

Unsurprisingly, Evenepoel is the a favourite in both the time trial and road race after his showing at Paris 2024.

The Belgian comes in as the defending time trial world champion too, and having finished third overall at the Tour de France this year can clearly hang with the climbers – something he will have to do with over 4,400m of altitude gain set on this road race course.

His hopes in the road race have perhaps been affected by the news that Belgian teammate Wout van Aert has been ruled out for the season after the latter took a heavy tumble on a wet downhill at the Vuelta a España.

Of course, the name on everyone's lips to challenge Evenepoel and perhaps take his first rainbow jersey is Tadej Pogacar . The Slovenian recently secured a solo win at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montreal and heads to Zurich in top form after resuming racing following his Tour de France victory.

Reigning road race world champion Mathieu van der Poel won't want to give his title up that easily, although the sheer amount of climbing to be done might be a stretch too far for the Dutchman.

In the time trial, look for the likes of Filippo Ganna , Josh Tarling, and Stefan Küng to also be challenging Evenepoel.

2024 UCI Road World Championships: Women's elite category riders to watch

Australia's Brown is the reigning Olympic time trial champion, having claimed gold on a wet day in Paris as some of the other favourites struggled. It is her final pro season and an Olympic-World Championships double would certainly be some way to sign off.

But defending champion Chloé Dygert (USA), who ended up with Olympic bronze after a crash on the slippery Parisian roads, will want to make up for her disappointment from the Games.

It remains to be seen whether Great Britain's Anna Henderson, who took Olympic silver but then crashed out of the Tour de France Femmes last month, has recovered sufficiently to race in Zurich.

Brown and Dygert are both also entered in the women's road race, as is the Olympic road race champion Faulkner.

But the usual suspects – the Netherlands' Marianne Vos and Demi Vollering , Belgium's Lotte Kopecky, Poland's Kasia Niewiadoma, and Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini – will all want to have a say too.

Kopecky is the defending champion from Glasgow, while Niewiadoma and Vollering finished the Tour de France Femmes first and second respectively and can hold their own over the climbing required.

2024 UCI Road World Championships: Men's and women's elite time trial and road race courses

Both men's and women's elite time trials feature a little bit of climbing, with the women gaining 327 vertical metres over 29.9km from Gossau to Zurich and the men 413m over 46.1km from Oerlikon to Zurich.

The same climbs will feature on both races, with the men racing a little longer around Zurich before reaching the hilly portion of the route.

The road races promise to be a different beast, however. Both the women and men will endure more climbing than they did last year in Glasgow, on routes that begin in Uster and Winterthur respectively and end in Zurich.

The women's road race features one lap of a loop around the Greifensee lake before heading to the city circuit around Zurich, which will be ridden four and a half times.

That circuit includes a short 782m but sharp climb of the Zürichbergstrasse, which at its steepest features gradients of nearly 16 per cent (and an average climb of 8.6 per cent), as well as a climb to the Witikon quarter of the city (1.9km at 6.2 per cent).

At 154.1km , the distance of the race for the women is the same as they competed in Glasgow in 2023, but at 2384m of altitude gain features an extra 155m of vertical climbing.

Meanwhile, the men begin with a ride around Winterthur circuit northeast of Zurich, featuring climbs up to Buch am Irchel (4.8km at 4.2 per cent) and at Kyburg (1.3km at 10.1 per cent), before joining the same city circuit for seven and a half laps.

In total, the men's elite road race has a distance of 273.9km – around 3km longer than last year – with a painful 4,470m of climbing, up from 3,570m in 2023.

2024 UCI WorldTour starts next week in Australia

The Santos Tour Down Under will launch the 2024 UCI WorldTour, comprising 35 events in 10 months, travelling roads around the world, from Australia to China via Europe.

While winter has settled over Europe, the heat is on in Adelaide, which prepares to welcome the launch the 2024 edition of the UCI WorldTour. The road season is already well under way in Australia, where the National Championships took place around Melbourne in the first week of the year. Luke Plapp (Team Jayco-AlUla) won two more titles (time trial and road race), while his new team-mate Caleb Ewan took the criterium.

After an action-packed year in 2023, the UCI WorldTour returns to centre stage this year with a similar calendar: 35 events (3 Grand Tours, 15 other stage races, and 17 one-day races) will be raced on four continents and in twelve countries.

The first battles

The stars of the UCI WorldTour will open proceedings in Australia with the first stage race of the year, the Santos Tour Down Under (January 16-21) before the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in Geelong (January 28).

The Emirati desert will then provide a majestic backdrop for further battles in the UAE Tour (February 19-25). The peloton will return to the colder European climate first in Belgium, with the Omloop Nieuwsblad (February 24), then in Italy for the Strade Bianche (March 2).

General Classification contenders, sprinters and one-day specialists will structure their calendar in different fashions, depending on their goals. Some will head to France for Paris-Nice (March 3-10), while others will travel to Italy to race Tirreno-Adriatico (March 4-10), before tackling the Poggio at the first Monument of the season, Milano-Sanremo (March 16).

The first major Pyrenean summits will make their appearance at the end of the winter, with the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya (March 18-24) in Spain.

Spring Classics

The arrival of the European spring will see the Flandriens enter the heart of their season. Belgium will buzz with the Classic Brugge-De Panne (March 20), the E3 Saxo Classic (March 22), Gent-Wevelgem in Flanders Fields (March 24) and Dwars door Vlaanderen - A Travers la Flandre (March 27). Reigning road race UCI World Champion Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) will attempt to claim a third crown in the Ronde van Vlaanderen (March 31), up against Wout van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike). The two great rivals are then expected on the cobbles of the Hell of the North, Paris-Roubaix (April 7).

The most explosive climbers will show their strength in the Itzulia Basque Country (April 1-6), where stars such as time trial UCI World Champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) will move up a gear ahead of the Ardennes Classics. The Belgian will be among the main contenders of the Amstel Gold Race (April 14) in the Netherlands then, in Belgium, La Flèche Wallonne (April 17), before attempting to achieve another feat with a third consecutive victory in Liège-Bastogne-Liège (21 April).

The thrill of the summits

The Tour de Romandie will again serve as a launch pad for the summer season, in the French-speaking region of Switzerland, from April 23 to 28. A Classic will also be on the programme during the same period: Eschborn-Frankfurt (May 1) in Germany. Then, it will be time for the first Grand Tour of the year, the Giro d'Italia (May 4-26). Slovenia’s two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) will participate in this three-week Italian race, starting this year in Piedmont, for the first time.

While the battle for the Maglia Rosa thrills the tifosi and fans around the world, the contenders for the Maillot Jaune of the Tour de France will be finalising their condition before the start of the Grande Boucle. The riders will tackle the French Alps at the Critérium du Dauphiné (June 2-9) then the Tour de Suisse (June 9-16).

Italy will resonate with the excitement of the Grand Tours again on June 29 with the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in Florence, Emilia-Romagna, which will launch three weeks of epic battles leading to the final - and unprecedented - finish in Nice on July 21. Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) will look to again stamp his name on the French stage race with a third consecutive victory. Evenepoel is set to discover the race, while Pogačar is aiming for a historic Giro-Tour double, and Primož Roglič will be wearing his new colours (those of Bora-Hansgrohe).

The Vuelta Ciclista a España (August 17-September 8), the last Grand Tour of the season, will come round quickly. But the climbers will first tackle the Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa (August 10). Two stage races will also punctuate the end of the European summer: the Tour de Pologne (August 12-18) and the Renewi Tour (August 28-September 1), with the Bretagne Classic (August 25) in between.

Sprinters will the rub shoulders at the Bemer Cyclassics (8 September). Canada will host the spectacular Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec (September 13) and Montreal (September 15). Finally, after the UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships in Zurich, Switzerland (21-29 September), the season will come to an end with the final Monument of the year in Italy, Il Lombardia (October 12), and the Gree-Tour of Guangxi in China (October 15-20).
