Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure, Channel 4, review: Affable chaos made for a relatable travelogue
There have been plenty of series extolling the joys of the british holiday recently, but rosie jones' gung-ho approach set this one apart.
In the long (long) line of UK-based pandemic travel programmes, at least Rosie Jones ’ offering Trip Hazard admitted upfront that production had basically made do with what they could, promising footage of the comedian “doing all the magical things legally permissible at the time of filming”.
The intro was in keeping with the tone of the show, which kept things irreverent at all times with a chirpy Come Dine With Me -style narration by Olivia Colman . In the first episode, Jones was joined by Scarlett Moffatt for a jaunt around the Lake District (although Moffatt did spend half the trip thinking she was in Yorkshire). Although it trod the same literal ground as other travelogue shows, this was a world away from other gentle, meandering explorations of Britain’s best walks/canals/train journeys/teacakes.
Instead, the affable chaos saw Jones, a self-confessed “professional idiot”, break an antique sausage-making machine, stage a live-action role-play Viking fight in front of some bemused picnickers and write a poem inspired by William Wordsworth that ended with the immortal lines: “Boobs. Boobs. Boobs. Jodie Comer.”
The meta layer of plot, featuring Jones’ interactions with Channel 4 commissioner “Saskia” (played by Rachel Stubbings) had its moments – “You’re very good for us. You tick a lot of boxes. Woman. Disabled. Gay. Northern.” – but felt a bit The Trip -lite.
It’s easy to feel fatigued by quite how many times we’re being reminded of the beauty of the British Isles, but Trip Hazard isn’t aiming for aspirational. Rather, it’s about the gung-ho approach you have to take when holidaying at home, and the giggly silliness of being away with your mates. Especially if you’re watching a sausage-making demonstration.

In Trip Hazard, Rosie Jones proves to be an unlikely inspiration
The format isn't exactly original, but watching the comedian try new things and either smash them or balls them up is an absolute tonic
Lady Leshurr and Rosie Jones abseil the National Lift Tower in Northampton for Channel 4's Trip Hazard. Image: CPL Productions
In the last few years, the news cycle has been more dramatic than one of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills after being served a weak Aperol spritz. Everything is on fire, everything is unfair, and everyone is distracting themselves with King Charles’s sausage fingers and Harry Styles’s trousers and the Apple iOS 16 update – or they’re crying and wailing and sharing poorly drawn cartoons of Paddington on social media, wondering what on earth is going to happen next.
But despite all the mad stuff that’s been going on in the world, personally I feel like I’ve been in a weird rut since 2020. Somehow day-to-day life feels pretty samey. Boring, even. I work, I scroll through the binfire of hell that is the internet and screenshot memes about Chris Pine, and I still do my stupid lockdown walk, which has stubbornly inserted itself into my routine like a guest that refuses to leave. Occasionally I may go to M&S and buy a salad, which feels like such a novelty that I should put it in my diary.
When I try to do more than a few things a week, though, like I would have done in 2019, I feel completely overwhelmed. Two days in a row in the office and I’m practically dead, and if I go out with friends, I pay for it for weeks. I find everything weirdly emotional and intense, and I’m wary of people (because recent evidence points to them being completely mad), but also in awe of them. It’s a strange knife-edge between suffocating boredom and sensory overload.
Some people though, are not deterred by post-pandemic fatigue. instead, they’re taking life by the balls, abseiling down tall buildings and milking goats with Lady Leshurr in Northampton. Last week, I belatedly discovered comedian Rosie Jones’s Channel 4 show Trip Hazard where she does just that, and I felt something shift inside me. A glimmer of… what was that? Inspiration?
The format isn’t exactly original (comedian and guest celeb go to different counties in the UK and do wacky local stuff) but watching Rosie Jones try new things and either smash them or balls them up is an absolute tonic. Unlike most presenters, who like to marinate in their own egos while exploring Tuscany in a vintage sports car, Rosie goes all in, unfazed by Viking reenactments, rap battles, stunt driving, microlite flying and sheep herding. Narrated by Joanna Lumley of all people, it’s joyfully silly and goofy, and gave me a sense that there was a richer life on my doorstep if I could only summon the enthusiasm. There are loads of goats to milk out there! What’s stopping me?
So, last week I took myself on a very low-key lone adventure to the glittering metropolis of Troon on the Ayrshire coast, about 45 minutes outside Glasgow. (I know, I’m a regular Eddie the Eagle, aren’t I?) When I arrived, I was immediately rewarded with miles and miles of silvery sand and big skies – like being given an amazing present. I had a sandwich and bought some old-fashioned champagne glasses from the charity shop, then I sat on a bench that said ‘In Memory of Ida, 83 Years Young’ and almost fell asleep in the sunshine. Literally nothing happened, but even this tiny jaunt out of my uncomfortable comfort zone was a pleasure. So I’d like to thank Rosie Jones for inspiring me to go and sit on a bench somewhere else and making me feel less insane. At least now I have something to put in my diary apart from “had a nice prawn salad for my lunch”. And you never know, next week I might even go to Ayr – which I hear also has an M&S. Crazy times.

Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure
Preview of Rosie Jones's new Channel 4 travel show
The landscape of Britain takes a back seat to larking about as Rosie Jones becomes the latest comedian to embark on her own travel series. She is, in the words of Olivia Colman’s voiceover, ‘a disabled, northern Joanna Lumley’ – though that’s probably imbuing the stand-up with a classiness that’s more aspirational than witnessed.
For as she travels the Lake District, Jones displays the comic sensibilities of a 14-year-old boy, gushing endlessly about ‘boobs’ when invited to channel the poetic spirit of Wordsworth or barely stifling giggles at every double-entendre that a Cumberland sausage-making sessions affords – which is plenty. In her mischievousness, she is egged on by her equally immature travelling companion, the erstwhile Gogglebox star and I’m A Celebrity champ Scarlett Moffatt. Not that she needs much encouragement, mind…
Jones’s juvenile streak is endearingly silly, exuding a giddy joie de vivre throughout her adventures, as if she can’t believe her luck that she’s getting paid to do this. Trip Hazard is certainly a counterpoint to Richard Ayoade ’s (equally funny) arch detachment in Channel 4’s well-established short-break stalwart, Travel Man.
In their breezy Cumbrian escapades, Jones and Moffatt get carried away with a Viking re-enactment, even if they don’t see the point of it, test the patience of that artisan sausage-maker - (as well as the breaking point of his antique equipment), drive a century-old traction engine, and pay an extortionate amount of money to sleep in a stable. But at least they got to order pudding for breakfast – a perfect metaphor for the sweet, cheeky pleasure this half-hour offers.
Travel sequences, gorgeous drone shots and sly gags in Coleman’s script are interspersed with a few skits with Rachel Stubbings playing a stereotypically out-of-touch TV executive who commissioned Trip Hazard, and Tom Allen undermining his affable, erudite image. As a former researcher at Channel 4, Jones knows this world - but like everything in this show, it’s teased with an infectious affection.
And that’s why spending half an hour in her enthusiastic company – wherever in the UK that happens to be - is such an easy delight.

Interview: Rosie Jones On Travel Series Trip Hazard
Comedian Rosie Jones tells us about Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure, Fridays from 9th April at 8.30pm on Channel 4. Also available as a box set on All 4.
Tell us about Trip Hazard and what viewers can expect.
It’s about me, who loves travelling, but at the moment I can’t really travel because of the pesky pandemic. So, always an optimist, I reckoned I could have as much of an adventure right here in Britain. So it’s going to places that aren’t necessarily holiday locations - like Norwich - and just finding the best out of that place. It’s full of adventure and positivity, and it’s making the most of this amazing, beautiful country we live in.
It’s so joyful to watch, did you enjoy getting out and about in a year when we’ve been so confined?
So much. During lockdown one - it’s so weird that we now have numbered lockdowns – so lockdown one, I spent with my mum and dad in Yorkshire and it was nice, I was glad I was up here rather than in London. To then go from five months of isolation to zip-wiring over a quarry in Wales, it was incredible. I always love adventure and getting out there and exploring, but especially after five months doing nothing I was taking every adventure like it was the first thing I’ve ever done. It was like, ‘we’re back, baby!’ and then lockdown two happened…
Why did you choose the locations you went to? Do you have a favourite?
We went to Whitby because I’m from Bridlington and that’s really where this idea started. I grew up in a little seaside town that I thought was absolutely rubbish and I couldn’t wait to leave. But coming back for lockdown, I appreciated it a lot more and I would take walks by the beach and go ‘it’s alright, this’. So that was the starting point and then I really just wanted to find other places in Britain that people from there, like me, would go ‘Norwich is rubbish, Anglesey is boring’, so it was going to places you wouldn’t really expect to be fun and beautiful and just making the most of it.
I actually think my favourite episode was Anglesey because that was the first one we filmed and, narrow-minded I know, but when I was packing for Wales I was like I need umbrellas, raincoats, jumpers, waterproof trousers, a snorkel, everything. But for the entire time we were there it was bright sunshine and breath-taking views. I looked at the breath-taking scenery and I thought ‘yeah, that’s why we’re doing this show,’ because many of us are guilty of slagging off where we’re from and slagging off our country, but actually, it is beautiful and amazing.
How did you decide which celeb pals to ask you to go with you on these trips?
That was fun because they all know me and they get tired of me a lot. We picked them because we wanted them to be the yin to my yang. We wanted to take people who would be like ‘why are you taking me to Norwich? I don’t want to be there. Rosie turn it down, you’re too loud, stop talking to me.’ All four of them, and they might have been lying to me, but by the end of the trips, all of them were like, ‘I didn’t want to, but I’ve had a lovely time!’ It was a challenge for me to win them round. I hope people agree, but all four of them, brought something different to it and they’re all brilliant in their own ways.
You visited the Lake District with Scarlett Moffatt which looked a lot of fun, especially the horse hotel…
It was amazing, I love horses but the notion of being able to sleep when you’ve got a massive stallion’s face on your belly, it’s not for me. It was a fun concept, but no!
Scarlett certainly got the less intimidating horse?!
I feel like production stitched me up and were like, get the disabled one up there with the massive horse!
Joe Wilkinson joined you in Whitby but he was quite reluctant wasn’t he, especially with the fossil hunting?
That fossil scenes sum up the whole series because Joe got there and was like ‘Where are we? Why have we got hammers? What are we doing?’ But we really got into it and when he found a fossil, he was genuinely so pleased and so happy. Finding something millions of years old in this country just on the beach, he really got into it. Secretly, I was so pissed off, I wanted to find it, not him! It’s my show!
And Norwich with Jamali Maddix looked a lot of fun.
I got quite drunk. We were drinking this old cocktail and what I don’t think is actually in the show is that it was 9am, and it went straight to my head. And the wine tasting, I’ll be honest, it just tasted all of wine and you can slowly see me go, fine, fine, fine, DRUNK! I got a bit giggly.
You’ve already mentioned Anglesey. Jenny Eclair joined you there, was she as excited about the ziplining as you?
I was so excited, it was the thing I had been looking forward to. Jenny was a little nervous and was a little bit like ‘But why are we doing this?’ When we got up there, she said ‘Right, I’m ready’ and, honestly, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. That view was spectacular.
Did you learn anything new or unexpected about your travel buddies?
I learned that Scarlett is my best friend. We had so much fun together, Scarlett just had the same level of energy as me. We became partners in crime, especially when it came to making sausages! I genuinely bonded with all four guests, although I knew Joe and Jamali especially beforehand, I got to know all four of them so well. I’d say that’s another reason why I’m so proud of this show, it’s so clear all of us genuinely get on.
And Olivia Colman narrates the series, which is quite the coup. How did you manage to get on Oscar winner on board?
By being an absolute legend! Honestly, we had a meeting and we knew we wanted a voiceover. The producer said ‘Right, imagine no one’s off limits, who do you want?’ And I said Olivia. He said ‘We’re not going to get her.’ She’s just a hero and I love her energy and her humour so much, so I just said, ‘Ask her, even if it’s a no email, I will literally frame that no email!’ But she came back and she said ‘I love Rosie, I’m a big fan, I’ll do it.’ Honestly, I’ve just taken a permanent residency on cloud nine because of that. And when you watch it, hearing her funny, beautiful and slightly judging voice of me, is just brilliant. For her to be a massive part of the show is just mind-blowing.
There’s also a scripted element to the series featuring your fictional commissioning editor. Why did you want to include that and what can we expect to see there?
I love telly so much and I come from a telly background, I used to work in production. I’ve had a lot of interaction with commissioners and most of them are incredible and they just elevate ideas and they’re brilliant. But you do get the Saskias of the TV world who make you go ‘Have you watched television? Do you know what TV is?’ And we just thought it would be a lot of fun for the viewers to get a peek behind the curtain. Being a writer and comedian with a background in TV, it felt quite fun for me to explore that side.
In a year when UK holidays are likely to be more popular than ever, where would you recommend people visit this summer? Should everyone go to Norwich?
Yes! And I’ll see you there! It sounds like I’m making it up but, honestly, every episode, go there. Go to Anglesey, go to Whitby, go to the Lake District and end your massive tour in Norwich because all four places were beautiful and had their own merits. It was a shame we didn’t have enough episodes and if there’s a series two, we never even explored Scotland or Ireland, or the south, I’m a massive fan of Somerset and Bath is beautiful. So wherever is near to you and safe to you, just go there with a picnic and a load of games and your walking boots and just explore the beautiful country we’re so lucky to live in.
If there was a second series, would you stay UK based then, rather than getting your passport out to visit more far flung destinations?
Even now, I’m not sure we’ll be able to travel abroad but, certainly, I think there are still enough places in the UK to explore. By series eight, I’m sure I can be persuaded to explore South America but, for now, I’m staying safe and there’s more than enough of the UK to explore.
What do you want viewers to take away from the series?
Probably a sense of positivity and hope. It’s in the British nature to go ‘Where I live is rubbish, I hate it so much’. But it’s not. This series is about appreciating the small things and the things on our doorstep. Politics, the government, the world, it’s all a bit much, it’s all heading straight for an apocalypse but I hope my show will give people 30 minutes every Friday to switch off and just enjoy watching silly people in beautiful places.
And what does the rest of the year look like for you, what else have you got coming up?
For now, I’m taking each day as it comes. I’m lucky enough to have a lot of writing work coming in which I can do from home. I’ve written a children’s book, called The Amazing Edie Eckhart, that will be out in August, so worst case scenario I’m going to spend the rest of the year writing, doing online gigs, doing covid-safe recordings but I’m hoping by the summer we’ll be able to gig again. And, hopefully, if the Paralympics happen, I might be going to Japan for a few weeks. I’m taking each day as it comes but I’m very grateful to still be busy, paying rent and happy.

Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure locations
Each of the four episodes sees Rosie heading to a different part of the UK. She starts out in the Lake District in episode one, where she takes part in a Viking re-enactment and spends the night with a stallion, while episode two sees her visiting Whitby to hunt for fossils and sample some world-beating fish and chips.
Episode three is in Norwich, where Rosie gets a closer look at the city's famed cathedral and explores the popular local wrestling scene, and the series ends in Anglesey, where she has a go at herding sheep and rides the world's fastest zipwire.
"We came up with the idea during the first lockdown," says Rosie. "I spent it with my mum and dad in Yorkshire, and I'd forgotten how beautiful the scenery is there, so I rang up my friends at [production company] Studio 71 and was like, 'right, we can't do a travel show roaming around Bolivia, but what if we take advantage of what we have on our doorstep?'"
"I loved the Lake District, that was just beautiful," Rosie continues. "The highlight of that was making sausages, until I broke the sausage-making machine and I was mortified . Whitby has a special place in my heart because I'm from Bridlington, which is just down the road. My highlight there was dressing up as a goth — goths are just the nicest people in the world!"
"We went to a vineyard in Norwich — I didn't know they made wine there!" adds Rosie. "I got a little bit drunk. And the weather in Anglesey was beautiful — the highlight there was the fastest zipline in the world, the views were incredible."
Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure guests — who's joining Rosie on her travels?
Scarlett Moffatt joins Rosie in episode one in the Lake District, while Joe Wilkinson is her companion in Whitby in episode two. Jamali Maddix accompanies Rosie to Norwich for the third episode, and the series concludes in Anglesey with Jenny Eclair.
"We really wanted to get a wealth of different guests," says Rosie. "All four of them I knew and had met before, so that was a big plus. They needed to be good, friendly people who would also be a little reluctant, like: 'why? Why have you brought me to Whitby?' I love watching all four episodes as a whole because they all bring something different: Scarlett meets me on my level of enthusiasm and we become a tag-team pair, and then me and Jenny have more of a mother-daughter relationship. Who did I bully more, Joe or Jamali? I bullied them both, but I was probably meaner to Joe..."
Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure voiceover: who's that doing the narration?
No, your ears are not deceiving you, that is indeed the one and only Olivia Colman narrating Rosie's travels. How did that come about?
"I still can't believe it!" says Rosie. "The producer said to me, 'right, no one's off the table — who do you want to do your voiceover?' and I said, 'Oscar-winner Olivia Colman'. The producer was like, 'okay, we're not going to get her...', and I said, 'just ask her, because even if she says no, we will have had communication', like, I will frame that 'no' email, I will be so happy. About a week later, the producer said, 'she said yes!', and nobody could believe it. I screamed for about 48 hours! I'm not saying anything that people don't know about her, but she's lovely, caring and giving. I just feel that her narration elevates the whole show. I love hearing her judging, sarcastic voice in every scene!"
