HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M11

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M11 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

The M11 motorway runs from northeast London to Huntingdon before merging with the A1(M) .  It is a vital road for motorists in Essex and Cambridgeshire, providing links to the M25, London and Stansted Airport.  It also serves several large towns such as Harlow, Bishops Stortford and Cambridge. The M11 is home to the UK's longest uninterrupted stretch of motorway between junctions with 15.2 miles between Junction 8 and Junction 9.

About the M11

The M11 does not follow convention when it comes to numbering its motorway junctions. There is no Junction 1 and the start of the M11 is actually at Junction 4. There is also only one service station at Junction 8, which serves both the M11 and the busy A120 dual carriageway.

The M11 was recently voted the 7th worst motorway in the country due to the high number of speed cameras, traffic jams and lack of lighting. Accidents and out-dated infrastucture were also on the list of annoyances for motorists on the M11.

History of M11

Construction on the M11 took place in stages, with the first stage being the stretch of road between junction 7 and junction 8. This was completed in 1975, before an extension down to Junction 4 was finished in 1977.  Northbound work on the M11 to Junction 14 finished in 1980 and the whole motorway was opened fully in February of that year.

Due to a tight budget, the motorway between Junctions 7 and 14 was unsurfaced concrete, however, this degraded quickly and in the late 1990’s the whole area was replaced with tarmac. The road resurfacing took until 2008 to complete.

There were plans to open a north-facing M11 junction at Junction 5 but this was abandoned in 1998 with many citing the location of the nearby Bank of England Printing works as reason for the junction’s dismissal, although officials have never confirmed this.

In January 2003, a snowstorm left thousands of motorists stranded for up to 20 hours between Junction 7 and Junction 9. The weather became so severe that many drivers left their vehicles parked on the motorway while 12 lorries jack-knifed, with one blocking the whole carriageway.

There has also been a plane crash on the M11 in June 2002 after the brakes failed on an Aero L-39 Albtratose , which was attemting to land at the Imperial War Museum's Duxford Aerodrome. The jet crashed through the barrier at the end of the runway, skidded across the northbound carriageway before coming to a rest on the southbound carriageway. No vehicles were involved in the accident although the trainee pilot was killed in the crash.

Live M11 traffic updates today as crash in Essex near Cambs border leaves motorway blocked

Two lorries are involved on the southbound carriageway - updates as we get them

The M11 is blocked near the Cambridgeshire border following a crash today (Wednesday, March 1). Emergency services are at the scene on the southbound carriageway between Junction 9 (Saffron Walden) and Junction 8 (Bishops Stortford).

Traffic is queueing as a result of the incident, which was first reported at around 2.45pm. Two lorries are reported to be involved.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "Traffic is currently stopped on the M11 southbound between J9 and J8 due to a collision involving 2 vehicles. Emergency services are in attendance. Delays of 30 minutes above normal travel times on approach, please allow extra time for your journey."

Inrix, the traffic data company, said: "M11 Southbound blocked, stationary traffic due to accident, two lorries involved from J9 (Saffron Walden) to J8 A120 (Bishops Stortford). The road has been blocked since 14:30 to attend to the accident in lane one just before J8, the road is expected to close from J10 soon."

All lanes reopen but delays of 1hr 40mins remain

INRIX has confirmed that all lanes have been re-opened, with traffic cameras showing restrictions cleared just after 4pm, leaving delays.

Travel time is still clocking in at around one hour and 40 minutes, meaning there is still major traffic on the roads.

Entry slip roads now reopen

The entry slip roads at J9 and J9A have now been reopened after previously being closed off to traffic.

Camera images have also confirmed the blockage has been moved into lane one (of two), which remains closed and traffic is now passing in lane two.

INRIX update

An update from INRIX said:

"Long delays, one lane closed and queuing traffic due to accident. Two lorries involved on M11 Southbound from J9 (Saffron Walden) to J8 A120 (Bishops Stortford).

"Camera images confirm traffic is now passing in lane two, leaving lane one (of two) still closed. The entry slip at J9A and J9 remain closed to prevent traffic heading into the queues causing delays on the A11".

INRIX have issued an update saying that the slip roads at J9A and J9 have both been closed just after 3pm.

This is now causing further delays, backing up onto the A11.

Delays of 30 minutes on approach

National Highways have confirmed that there are delays of 30 minutes on approach to the motorway.

Essex Police, as well as Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, are also in attendance.

Road from J10 expected to close soon

Traffic monitoring site INRIX said that Southbound roads are blocked and there is stationary traffic on the roads due to the accident.

The road has been blocked since 2.30pm to attend to the accident in lane one just before J8. Motorists are being advised to either avoid the area or plan journeys accordingly.

M11 Roadworks

The M11 motorway is a major road in the south-east of England, stretching from the Northern edge of London down to Cambridge. It was first opened in 1975, and its construction was part of a larger improvement project of the A11 road.

The M11 has seen some upgrades since then, including an additional lane in Witham, Essex in 1988 and a further widening of the motorway in 2015.

The motorway is generally considered to be a safe route, with a low number of accidents and fatalities occurring each year. In 2019, there were 396 accidents, causing 430 casualties in total, including 12 fatalities. This has been considerably lower than other major roads in the same area, including the M25 and M4.

Overall, the statistics for the M11 suggest a record of safety and reliability.

Live M11 traffic updates as crash partially blocks motorway

The crash, which is also affecting traffic on the A11, occurred at Junction 9 of the M11 near Saffron Walden

The M11 is suffering from delays this afternoon (November 13) following a multi-vehicle crash. The M11 Southbound has been blocked as a result of the incident, which took place near Saffron Walden and is also affecting local roads and the A11.

The crash occurred at Junction 9 of the M11 near Saffron Walden and was first reported just before 2.30pm. According to Inrix, a company which provides real-time traffic data, the multi-vehicle incident has led to the motorway being blocked and there is now stationary traffic in the area as a result of the incident.

A statement from Inrix said: "Multi-vehicle accident on the M11 Southbound at J9 (Saffron Walden). The road is blocked and there is stationary traffic. It is also affecting the A11."
