Even a short trip with kids in tow can feel like an epic journey, and taking the right diaper bag along for the ride is crucial. A backpack-style diaper bag is key for comfort while you’re out and about; ideally, you’ll want a model that holds all the necessities for both you and baby and is even, dare we say, stylish? We tested 30 diaper bag backpacks to find the best options, whether you’re venturing out for the day or pulling an overnighter with your kids.

The best diaper backpacks offer multiple compartments and easy access to the critical items inside — because no one wants to rummage through a shapeless, disorganized bag while juggling a crying baby. We evaluated bags based on their capacity, design, comfort, and value, both in our New York City lab and over the course of six months out in the real world for long-term testing. We loaded (and reloaded) each bag with bottles, wipes, and diapers, and schlepped around the city wearing them. We crammed them into strollers and gave them each the one-handed-holding-a-crying-baby test. (Learn more about our in-depth testing process below.) The models that passed with flying colors were comfortable, intuitive, easy to open, and stylish.

Best Overall

Bugaboo changing backpack.

This sleek bag was incredibly comfortable, even fully loaded, and necessities were easy to access via a handy front zipper.

The outer pouch for an adult water bottle is on the slim side and may not fit all bottles.

We love the mix of form and function this backpack offers. It includes both a laptop pocket and a changing mat, and has plenty of snug, intuitive pockets to keep necessities organized. Even when fully loaded with baby gear and a laptop, we found it to be comfortable and light, with the weight of our items distributed evenly. Plus, it looks great — we’d carry this bag even without a baby in tow.

The easy-to-use front zipper on this backpack makes it stand out from some other models we tested. We could access everything we needed via the front, including the changing mat, without having to fully open up the bag and dig around. The velcro top closure is equally simple to use, even one-handed. The bag’s leakproof interior is standard among most diaper backpacks, but the water-resistant bottom is a huge plus — even external spills won’t ruin the bag or its contents. The side pocket meant to hold an adult water bottle is a little narrow and doesn’t fit a larger bottle but is fine for a standard size.

Although this backpack is one of the taller models we tested, it still fits easily in the cargo basket underneath both large jogging strollers and smaller umbrella strollers. And, it includes straps to easily attach the bag to the handle of most models. Overall we found this to be the most user-friendly, durable, and stylish option we tested.

Best Organization

Ruvalino diaper bag backpack.

With five separate zippered compartments, this backpack is an organized parent’s dream.

Compartments are challenging to access one-handed.

This accordion-like bag features multiple zippered compartments and 16 pockets, so there’s a designated space for just about any item you’d need to carry. The separate sections keep everything well-organized and in place, and prevent items from getting hopelessly buried. Even fully loaded, the bag’s weight is evenly distributed, and its padded straps feel comfortable and secure. The two insulated bottle pockets in the main compartment are a nice touch, too, and make it easy to safely bring along formula or breastmilk for a short trip.

Our biggest issue with this bag is the accessibility of the compartments — because of the placement of the zippers, it’s nearly impossible to access most compartments one-handed. We found ourselves needing to set down either the bag or the baby in order to retrieve items from inside, which can be challenging when you’re on the move. Otherwise, this is a well-designed bag that seamlessly fits everything you need for a successful outing.

The Details: 1.78 pounds | 11.8 x 7.8 x 16.5 inches | 25-liter capacity | Water-resistant polyester

Best Convertible

Caraa nylon baby bag.

This bag is roomy and comfortable with versatile strap options.

The backpack straps are difficult to adjust, and the bag doesn’t include a changing mat.

A cross-body diaper bag can sometimes be an easier style to travel with when you’re carrying multiple bags, and we love that this option lets you choose how you want to wear it. It has a plethora of pockets and compartments — more than we could fill in our testing, really — and a comfortable, pillow-like design. The long pulls on its external zippers make it easy to open one-handed, and items inside stayed in place during testing even when we jostled it around.

This bag doesn’t include a changing mat or a wet bag like some models, but it does have insulated, wipeable interior pockets for bottles and clothes. The shoulder strap and backpack options are equally comfortable, although the backpack straps weren’t as easy to adjust as we would’ve liked. At nearly twice the price of most other bags we tested, this one is on the more expensive side, but it is a stylish, well-designed, and versatile option for travel.

The Details: 2.5 pounds | 12.25 x 12 x 5 inches | 12-liter capacity | Recycled nylon

Best Colors

Jujube zealous backpack.

This lightweight, compact backpack comes in over 17 different colorways.

The bag’s main zipper sometimes gets caught when zipping and unzipping.

The JuJuBe Zealous backpack comes in more colors and patterns than any other model we reviewed, so it’s easy to coordinate with any other luggage or bags you may be carrying. The interior feels spacious with plenty of pockets, but the bag still feels compact overall. We found the exterior zippered pockets to be especially intuitive, and love that one contained dividers and a key ring for all our non-baby essentials. Pockets are easy to access with one hand, although the main zipper occasionally got stuck during testing.

This bag’s smaller footprint makes it comfortable and lightweight to wear, and it fits into both larger and more compact strollers. It also features a couple less common but very useful compartments: a “tech” pocket on top, which could be used for anything you need easy access to, and a pair of loops in the main compartment for holding a baby blanket in place. We’d recommend this pick for anyone who wants more color choices without skimping on features.

The Details: 2.1 pounds | 11 x 5 x 16 inches

Best With Luggage Sleeve

7am enfant london backpack.

This bag’s removable diaper caddy and attached suitcase strap make it especially handy for travel.

The grab handles are not as comfortable or convenient as we’d like, so this bag is less versatile than it appears.

With its attached luggage sleeve and quilted patent look, the 7AM Enfant London Backpack is a chic option for air travel or overnight stays. We found the design of this bag to be especially thoughtful: it includes a laptop pocket, plus a removable diaper caddy with insulated bottle pockets (a feature we didn’t find in many models we tested). The attached stroller straps and luggage sleeve also make it adaptable for whichever mode of travel you choose that day.

There’s plenty of room inside the bag for wipes, a change of clothes, diapers, bottles, and more, so it's easy to pack for flying with a baby . However, it’s worth noting that it can be challenging to access everything one-handed. The removable diaper caddy helps address this: lifting out the caddy kept everything we needed at arm’s reach. The bag is less comfortable to wear with the included shoulder straps, but worn as a backpack, it’s comfortable and stable. This is a great choice when you’re juggling other luggage in addition to your baby’s bag.

The Details: 2.1 pounds | 14 x 11 x 5 inches | 14-liter capacity | Polyester

Best With Changing Station

Baby brezza dante changing station diaper bag.

This bag’s drop-down changing pad is a game-changer, and we love the 13 different pockets for organization.

It’s challenging to access items inside the bag with one hand.

The Baby Brezza Dante Diaper Backpack is not a compact option, but its multiple compartments and built-in changing station make great use of its ample space. There’s plenty of room to store food, bottles, and changing necessities, and we loved the unique antimicrobial pocket for keeping pacifiers ick-free.

The built-in changing station is this bag’s standout feature: the back of the bag unzips to access a dropdown changing pad with small nylon “walls” to keep baby’s hands from grabbing at less-than-clean surfaces and pouches to keep diapers and wipes in easy reach. Unlike some models we tested, this changing station can detach, making it more versatile. Because of its large size and various compartments, this bag is not as easy to manage and access one-handed, but it’s a smart choice if space and a changing station are your top priorities.

The Details: 3 pounds | 16 x 14 x 7 inches | 17-liter capacity | Polyester

Best for Overnight Stays

Honest city backpack.

This bag is roomy, stylish, and very comfortable to wear while walking around, making it ideal for an overnight trip.

Its key holder pocket is buried deep in the interior and not easily accessible from the outside.

Space and versatility are key when you’re packing up for an overnight trip with a baby, and the Honest City Backpack offers both. It’s plenty roomy inside with two large exterior pockets, and it contains both a wet bag for soiled clothing and insulated pockets for bottles and snacks. The wipeable vegan leather exterior gives it a professional, grown-up look — we could just as easily envision using this bag to haul a laptop and snacks to work.

Even fully loaded, the padded straps make this backpack comfortable to wear around, and we had no problem accessing the outer zippered pockets one-handed. We did find ourselves wishing for a more easily accessible space for keys — the dedicated key pocket is buried deep in the bag and hard to reach on the go. Still, we’d recommend this to anyone who needs a stylish overnight bag for both grown-up and baby essentials.

The Details: 2.75 pounds | 17.7 x 14.9 x 18.1 inches | 15-liter capacity | Polyurethane vegan leather

Best for Short Outings

Fawn design the original diaper bag.

This bag’s stylish design and more compact size make it easy to grab for quick day trips.

There’s no changing mat or insulated bottle pockets included.

For shorter trips around town, the Fawn Design Backpack is a stylish, easy-to-carry choice. The faux leather has a nice feel, and we love the easily adjustable straps. We were easily able to fit most necessities inside the bag, but adding in a wet bag and a changing mat would be a squeeze in this model — one of the key drawbacks to this bag. It features plenty of pockets for grown-up essentials, too, including a zippered pocket that lays flat against the wearer’s back to keep valuables extra secure.

We had no trouble operating the bag one-handed, from adjusting straps to opening pockets, and although the straps aren’t padded like some models we tested, they are surprisingly comfortable. The lack of an insulated pocket for bottles or a changing mat makes this bag less functional for long outings, but we found this to be a great choice for a shorter day trip.

The Details: 4 pounds | 13 x 13.5 x 7 inches | Faux leather

Best Lightweight

Jujube travel backpack.

This is one of the smallest, lightest models we tested.

Its features are more basic than some models on the market.

The JuJuBe Right Back is a small, lightweight option that still offers plenty of compartments for organizing necessities. It’s understated and high quality, and its pockets cater to parents’ needs, including a glasses pocket, a wallet compartment, and an elastic strap for keys. It lacks the clever features some models have, like a built-in wipes compartment, but the included components are versatile enough that it still met most of our needs during testing.

This bag feels incredibly lightweight while wearing it, and the padded straps are easy to adjust. Because of its compact size, it fits easily into the cargo area of even a smaller stroller. We had no issues accessing most items in the bag one-handed, although we did have to remove the bag to access the changing pad. Some items, like the changing pad and an adult water bottle, are a tight fit in this bag, but it’s a good choice for a lighter weight backpack.

The Details: 2 pounds | 12 x 16 x 5 inches | 17-liter capacity | Polyester

Itzy Ritzy Mini Diaper Bag Backpack

This mini backpack still holds everything you need for a day out with your baby.

The thin, unpadded straps make it less comfortable to carry.

The Itzy Ritzy Mini Diaper Bag is just that — a miniature version of a backpack that still has most of the features parents need for a day out. It offers fewer pockets than full-size versions (four external and four internal) and, because of the small size, the pockets themselves are a little less versatile. But, it was still possible for us to squeeze all our necessities into this compact bag and we like that it wasn’t bulky to carry around.

The front of the bag opens completely, so it’s easy to take inventory of what’s inside, and every zipper could be operated one-handed during testing. However, this backpack lacks padding overall — the included changing pad is a thin vegan leather mat, and the unpadded straps aren’t very comfortable to wear which is something to consider if you’ll be wearing this for long periods. In general this bag holds less gear because of its diminutiveness, but if a manageable size is priority one for your outing, this is a solid choice.

The Details: 2.1 pounds | 11.5 x 7.5 x 13.75 inches | Polyurethane

Other Diaper Bag Backpacks We Liked

Five of the diaper backpacks we tested did not make our list of top recommendations yet still stood out from the pack. The following bags all had positive attributes, but a few things held them back.

Petunia Pickle Bottom Tempo Backpack : We love this backpack for its gender-neutral design and its deceptively large capacity, but the lack of interior zippered pockets was not ideal.

HapTim Large Baby Diaper Bag : This unfussy option has a huge capacity and nice padding. However, the only access to the interior pockets are from the top, which makes it less user-friendly.

Dagne Dover Indi Diaper Backpack : The comfort and chic design of this backpack nearly won us over — it felt like wearing a cloud. However, the interior pockets lost their shape and functionality when we packed other items into the main compartment, making this a less optimal choice.

We spent a day in our New York City lab testing 30 backpack-style diaper bags with a range of features. We evaluated each bag based on capacity, design, comfort, and value, and since durability is key for diaper bags, we spent an additional six months long-term testing the products.

We weighed each backpack ourselves both empty and full, and zipped and unzipped each compartment multiple times to test for ease of use. We packed each bag full of baby (and parent) essentials, making note of how intuitive each bag was to pack and whether there were designated slots for necessities.

To simulate a day out with a little one, we took each bag on a brisk walk and loaded it into two different sized strollers. We also gave each bag the crying baby test: using one hand, we tested accessing items inside and repacking them to evaluate whether the bag would be easy to use while holding a fussy baby or toddler. The bags that ranked highest on all our tests were selected for this roundup.

Tips for Buying Diaper Backpacks for Travel

Decide the best size for your needs.

Diaper bag backpacks can vary widely in size and capacity, so consider the distance and duration of your trip before you start shopping. For air travel, you may want to consider a bag that is smaller than 18 x 14 x 8 inches (standard personal-item size) and has easily accessible pockets for your wallet and phone; overnight stays closer to home might call for a larger capacity bag you can toss in the backseat. For day trips and short outings, comfort and portability are key, so look for padded straps and a lighter weight, but you may be able to forgo insulated pockets or built-in changing stations.

Prioritize organization

When you’re on the hunt for a diaper bag backpack for travel, prioritize intuitive pockets and zippered compartments. Consider how many essentials you’ll need to bring and your specific organization style, whether you prefer a dedicated pocket for each item or a more flexible and freeform setup. Look for bags that offer dedicated space for both baby’s items and grown-up necessities to avoid losing your keys or phone in a pile of toys and teethers.

Look for water-resistant material

Diaper bag backpacks are prone to spills by nature, so you’ll want a bag that’s easy to wipe clean and keep moving. Look for an interior that’s described as “stain resistant,” “water resistant,” or “wipeable”; polyester or polyurethane (also known as faux leather or vegan leather) are wise choices.

Choose the right bag for multiple users

Unlike your purse or laptop bag, a diaper backpack is meant to go wherever your baby goes — no matter who’s carrying it. As you’re selecting the perfect diaper backpack for your family, consider who all will be using the bag. A sleek, gender-neutral design can make a diaper backpack more versatile for any caregiver, and a manageable size might be important for petite users.

Frequently Asked Questions

While you can technically use any backpack as a diaper bag, products specifically designed as “diaper backpacks” offer more baby-specific features, like insulated pockets for bottles and snacks, multiple compartments to organize essentials, changing pads, and wet bags. Diaper backpacks are also typically made of water-resistant, washable, or wipeable material to make cleanup easier, and usually offer padded straps for comfort.

Your diaper bag packing list will depend on your needs, the age of your child, and the length of your trip. Typically, you’ll want to bring along diapers and wipes, a change of clothes, a toy or two, spare pacifiers if your child uses them, and bottles or snacks. If you’re bringing along breastmilk or prepared formula and need to keep it cold until you’re ready to serve it, tuck a lightweight ice pack into your bag’s insulated pocket to keep milk at a safe temperature.

Consider the weather and location before you pack: for summer travel, toss in a sunhat and baby-safe sunscreen , and for cooler weather, add a light layer and/or a baby blanket if space permits. Hand sanitizer, burp cloths, and a small first aid kit also come in handy, and most parents choose to throw their own essentials — wallet, keys, phone, and water — in the bag as well.

Many airlines don’t count diaper bags or diaper backpacks as a personal item or carry-on, which means you’ll be able to board with your purse or tote, carry-on suitcase, and diaper bag. The policy varies by airline, however; United and American Airlines allow families to bring a diaper bag for free, while Delta and Alaska count diaper bags as a carry-on item. Be sure to confirm with your specific airline before you travel.

If you plan on traveling with small children in the near future, here are some other useful items you may want to pick up ahead of your trip.

Joolz AER+ Travel Stroller : This is our overall favorite pick out of all the travel strollers we've tested , proving to be the quickest to assemble. It only weighs 13 pounds, so you can leave your clunkier strollers at home. Plus, it's easy to collapse when you need to fold it up into a compact package for flights.

Moon Lence Collapsible Outdoor Utility Wagon : When we tested beach wagons , this was one of our favorites for carrying kids. It has the ability to haul up to 220 pounds, which is great for busy families who have a lot of gear, kids, and pets to haul around. We found the wheels to be sturdy enough to maneuver over sandy terrain.

Graco Contender Slim Convertible Car Seat : Slim and great for compact cars, this versatile car seat has several inserts that help you customize it for your child, including an infant insert with extra padding, eight headrest heights, and two reclining positions. It also has a removable cup for snacks and drinks.

The Ultimate Diaper Bag Packing List for Air Travel

Ultimate Diaper Bag Packing List for Air Travel

Not staged, I promise! Snuggling with Mickey diapers.

Diapers are only the start of what you need to pack for a successful airplane trip with little ones.  My motto when it comes to travel with babies and toddlers is (like the Boy Scouts) to be prepared.  I use a packing list to make sure that the diaper bag is stocked and ready with airplane essentials.

Here’s my tried, true, and tested diaper bag packing list for air travel:

  • Diapers : Huggies Snug & Dry are a cute addition to your travel diaper bag if you are headed to Disney and want to theme your kiddo’s attire.
  • Wipes : Travel sized packs of wipes are easy to find these days.
  • Antibacterial wipes : For disinfecting the tray table, armrests, and other surfaces your baby will touch.
  • Changing pad : Check out my favorite reusable changing pad for airplanes or consider using disposables.
  • Diaper cream : You may not be able to change your baby as often as you’d like during air travel, so diaper cream is important for extra protection.
  • Pain medicine (ibuprofen, acetaminophen) with syringe/dropper : Pressure changes can hurt little ears or kids can get sick en route during your travels, so always pack infant or childrens’ pain relievers in your diaper bag for easy access.
  • Cheap baby-safe toys : Toys have a way of getting lost under airplane seats or left behind at airports, so don’t bring anything irreplaceable.
  • Bottles or sippy cups with milk/formula : Remember that liquids for babies may require special screening but you are allowed to bring milk, formula, and juice under TSA rules.
  • Baby food : Some baby food pouches are technically too big to pass muster without additional TSA inspection, so look for the pouches that are under 3.4 ounces.
  • Change of clothes for you & baby : Because no matter how good the diaper, explosions can and will happen at some point!
  • Blanket : Blankets can serve double duty for cold flights as well as for wiping up a truly unexpected and large mess in a pinch.
  • Burp cloths : For those with younger babies still prone to spitting up, you need at least one burp cloth and probably more.
  • Bib : If your baby is eating solids or just at a drooling stage, a bib or two is essential.
  • Pacifier : If you use them, pacifiers are great to help baby and toddler ears adjust to pressure changes on descent. Consider bringing a pacifier clip so your child doesn’t drop it on the nasty airplane floor!
  • Plastic bags : Necessary for diaper disposal, trash, or holding wet or dirty clothes.

Designed specifically for parents traveling with babies and kids in tow (why didn’t we think of that?), the Getaway Bag is packed with thoughtful features—and more pockets than we can count. Our favorite is the center compartment with customizable “shelves” for organizing things just the way you like them. We also love the diaper compartment, the odor-resistant and waterproof pocket designed specifically for anything wet or dirty (because what would a plane ride with a baby be without a diaper blowout?) and the concealed security pockets for passports and other valuables.

  • We analyzed results from Babylist’s Best Baby Products survey, which polled 6,000 Babylist users and asked them to share the baby products they love the most and why.
  • We utilized insight from the Babylist editorial team, including Gear Editor Jen LaBracio, an expert in the baby space for over six years and a mom of two who has written hundreds of baby gear guides and personally researched and tested hundreds of baby products, including many diaper bags.
  • We reviewed customer reviews from hundreds of real Babylist parents.

Real talk: kids are unpredictable. Just when you think your child is full, minutes later they’ll want a snack. It’s practically guaranteed that your baby who always poops in the morning will have an afternoon blowout if you’re anywhere inconvenient (think: on a plane, hiking, shopping, at that nice-ish restaurant). Having key essentials at the ready means you can deal with any scenario without having to pack up and head home.

If you want to skip the diaper bag, you definitely can use a regular backpack or even a tote to cart around whatever you need. (You can even slip a diaper changing clutch —a compact changing pad that can hold a few diapers and other bare essentials—into your usual bag.) But lots of parents choose to register for a diaper bag since they’re specially designed for organizing baby and kid gear and often feature extra compartments, insulated pockets for bottles and other helpful perks.

What Type of Diaper Bag Is Best?

Diaper bags come in a variety of styles:

  • Diaper bag backpacks let you have your hands free. They can even be worn on your back while you’re wearing your baby in a carrier on your front. Backpack diaper bags often include features like zippered pockets, insulated bottle pockets, padded shoulder straps, laptop pockets and more.
  • Diaper bag totes feature two long straps so you can carry the bag over your shoulder. Most totes offer plenty of space and have many of the same features as diaper bag backpacks such as internal pockets, zippered compartments and insulated bottle holders.
  • Messenger bags have one long strap. They can be worn crossbody or over one shoulder.
  • A diaper clutch  is small and portable. Clutches fit the bare minimum: think a few diapers, wipes, a small tube of diaper cream and maybe enough room for one small set of extra clothes.
  • A diaper bag belt bag (aka a fanny pack) is just what it sounds like: a fanny pack with diaper bag capabilities. Like a diaper clutch, diaper bag belt bags only hold the essentials.

Figuring out which diaper bag is best for you is a matter of personal preference and can also depend on how much stuff you’ll want (or need) to carry around when you’re out with your baby.

Need help figuring out what kind of diaper bag to get? Check out How to Choose a Diaper Bag for tips on what to consider.

What sets a diaper bag apart from a standard bag or backpack is its features. Diaper bags are designed with babies and toddlers in mind, complete with plenty of pockets, compartments and other accessories to contain all the things you need when you’re on the go with your family. Many are often extra durable to withstand spills, stains and heavy use. Here are a few features to look for when shopping for the best diaper bag.

  • Plenty of storage space. A place for all the things is what most parents are after when choosing a diaper bag. Look for a bag with plenty of space to store items like diapers and wipes, of course, but also a change of clothes, bottles, bibs, a blanket, pacifiers and more.
  • Pockets, pockets and more pockets. If you’ve ever owned a bag that resembles a black hole, you know how frustrating it is to spend five minutes rooting around every time you need something. Add in a screaming baby or toddler, and things really start to heat up. Look for a diaper bag with both lots of storage space and plenty of pockets and compartments to organize all of your baby essentials. Things like lots of pockets (including external pockets, outer pockets and mesh pockets) insulated side pockets for bottles or other cold or warm items, a pacifier pouch, and a key leash are all helpful. Other nice-to-have special features might include pockets for diapers and baby wipes, a wet bag for dirty diapers or other soiled items, a removable diaper caddy, stroller straps, a luggage sleeve and a laptop compartment.
  • Durable, easy-to-clean material. Most parents use their diaper bag daily for at least several years, so they can really take a beating. Look for a bag made from sturdy, durable material that’s also easy to clean. (Some diaper bags can be thrown right into the wash, while others are wipe-clean only.) A waterproof or water-resistant interior is also a nice perk.
  • Comfortable straps. Since you’ll often have your hands full, a comfortable way to carry your diaper bag is essential. If you’re using a backpack-style bag, padded, adjustable shoulder straps are key.
  • Style. If you have to carry around a bag packed with baby gear each day, it may as well be one you like. There are so many diaper bag styles; have fun choosing one that matches your personal style.

You’ve figured out which diaper bag you love—but now what are you supposed to pack inside of it? Figuring out how much (or how little) to stuff into your diaper bag is a matter of personal preference and will depend on the age of your child, but this is a good list of basics to keep in mind.

  • Diapers. Pack enough to last the duration of your outing, plus a few extra in case of emergencies. Also, throw in a travel-size container of diaper rash cream and a small hand sanitizer.
  • Wipes. You can never have too many, so pack whatever you can fit.
  • Changing pad. A portable changing pad means you’ll always have a clean and comfortable surface for diaper changes.
  • Extra clothes and burp cloths. Pack a change of clothes for baby and some burp cloths in case of spills or accidents. Pro tip: babies grow quickly, so dig through your diaper bag every few months and be sure the extra clothes you have stashed inside are size-appropriate.
  • Other extras. Pacifiers, a bib, a small toy or teether, a lightweight blanket, a small first aid kit, sunscreen and a sun hat, a wet bag and a nursing cover if you’re a nursing parent are other items to consider.

How long will you use a diaper bag?

You’ll likely use a diaper bag from birth through the toddler years and maybe even into the preschool days. Since it’s going to stick around for a while, be sure you’ll think through if the style and color will be something you’ll still want to tote around several years from now.

Is a diaper bag considered a carry-on?

It depends on the airline. Airlines typically allow passengers to bring one carry-on bag along with a personal item, such as a purse or laptop bag, onto the plane, and a diaper bag would fall under the category of a personal item. Some airlines will count a diaper bag as a personal item, while others will not, so it’s always recommended to check the specific policies of the airline you’re traveling with before you depart.

What materials are best for a diaper bag?

The best materials for a diaper bag are durable and easy to clean. Some popular options include nylon, polyester or canvas. These materials are waterproof or water-resistant, making them ideal for storing diapers, wipes and other baby essentials.

Do you need two diaper bags?

No, you don’t need two diaper bags—but most parents do find themselves with two (or more) diaper bags along the way. Sometimes this is because each parent wants a separate bag, or you need an extra diaper bag for a grandparent or caregiver. Another common scenario is owning one large diaper bag and a second smaller bag, like a diaper belt bag.

Shortly after having my first child, with a trip on the books, I remember messaging a mom friend and asking: What do you do about a bag ? After all, there was a day not too long ago when the diaper bag was an eyesore. An item on a baby registry, it was clunky and baby-centered, and it marked a short life stage, retiring to a closet a mere matter of years later.

Gone are the days; the diaper bag has undergone a rebrand, and three kids and about five years—and many trips by plane and car and train and stroller and foot—later, I’ve found that the best diaper bags have certain features in common: They favor functionality (they come with necessary extras such as a changing mat), they’re stylish (yes, my go-to carry-on has become a diaper bag), and—this is a biggie—they remind parents that you don’t have to stop traveling just because you have a baby.

Below, 10 diaper bags I recommend for travelers. But first, a few things to keep in mind while shopping for the right option for you.

  • The best diaper bag backpacks
  • The best diaper tote bags
  • The best crossbody diaper bags

What to consider when finding the right diaper bag for you:

Much like sunscreen , the best diaper bag is the one you actually use, so think about your needs. Are you a minimalist? Do you love pockets? Are you planning on using one bag for multiple children? Multiple bags for multiple children? Do you tend to travel by plane or by car? Do backpacks make your back ache? Important considerations such as price and size matter, too, of course, but prioritizing needs and individual differences will help you narrow down the (admittedly saturated) market.

Is a diaper bag considered a carry-on and/or personal item?

While rules and regulations vary depending on the carrier, most major US airlines allow one bag per child. Some ( JetBlue ), but not all ( Alaska ), airlines include lap infants—babies under two without a seat—in that allowance. It's best to check your airline’s policy before packing.

The best backpacks

travel size items for diaper bag

The husband-wife duo behind this travel bag biz with a cult-like following created the bag they needed to take long-haul flights and travel the world with their two littles. The Getaway Bag slides over a roller, includes an insulated lunch pack, dividers, multiple entry points, and a side pouch that perfectly fits a pack of wipes. “Globetrotting parent” needs only to sound like an oxymoron. This bag has seen my family through cross-country flights with toddlers (providing easy access to all of the things ), day hikes (with drinks and snacks and outfit changes all packed up), and day trips into the city; I don’t know that we’ll ever outgrow it.

Weight: 3.4 lbs. Size: 6.5"D x 10.2"W x 19.7"H

Many love Dagne Dover for its accessories (a changing mat, two different-sized pouches, stroller clips, etc.), but its beloved Indi Backpack also has a waterproof exterior (because, spills) and even the small size fits most breast pumps. It’ll become a go-to for trips you don’t bring your kids on, too.

Weight:  3.8 lbs. (medium) Size: 11.75"L x 6.5"W x 12.75"H (medium)

travel size items for diaper bag

Yes, it’s as sleek as you’d expect. Plus, it checks the boxes: The backpack—which has a removable pouch that you can wear as a crossbody—slides over rolling luggage and has pockets galore, including enough space to pack your own things, too.

Size: 12.2"L x 7.9"W x 15.7"H

travel size items for diaper bag

You might know State for its cool, patterned kids backpacks , but it might be time to match. The adult pack fits a 15-inch laptop, comes in muted shades of classic colors (a burnt red/orange or a light pink), has a mesh pocket for dirty gear, and a changing pad. You can also personalize it.

Size: 5.9"D x 13"W x 16.5"H

travel size items for diaper bag

Caraa calls its baby bag the “Swiss army knife” of diaper bags. We can see why: It features insulated pockets (to keep milk cold or bottles warm), comes with its own diaper caddy, has travel musts like a luggage sleeve and stroller hooks, and, with a thin puffy nylon exterior, it simply looks good.

Weight:  2.5 lbs. Size: 12"L x 12"W x 5"H (medium)

travel size items for diaper bag

When seasoned parents see the words ‘machine washable,’ sometimes they need to know no more. But this backpack from Colugo, which has a luggage sleeve, is also durable, comes with insulated bottle holders, and has an easy-to-access top flap for snacks (for you and them).

Weight:  1.9 lbs. Size: 12.5"L x 4.5"W x 17.5"H

The best tote bags

travel size items for diaper bag

For those who favor a tote bag over a backpack, Dagne Dover’s diaper tote—which, much like its backpack counterpart, is big enough to hold a breast pump and comes with a changing mat—has the added bonus of a luggage sleeve and a convenient side zip pocket for wipes or tissues. The look is classic.

Weight:  4 lbs. Size: 16.25"L x 6"W x 12"H

travel size items for diaper bag

Work bag, travel bag, diaper bag, Béis’s The Diaper Bag could be all three. Space is a big selling point on the oversized tote—it fits two laptops! It could also be a good pick for those who want just one bag for the kids; it allows easy access to everything while keeping everything in the bag . No mid-airport dump outs here.

Weight:  4 lbs. Size: 7"D x 19"W x 14"H

The best crossbody bags

travel size items for diaper bag

Aptly named to be your apprentice during a diaper change, this crossbody holds four to six diapers, a tube of diaper rash cream, a bottle of hand sanitizer, and a changing pad (included). It also fits inside a side compartment in the company’s Getaway Bag for easy emergency access.

Weight:  0.5 oz. Size: 3"D x 11"W x 6"H

travel size items for diaper bag

A fanny pack worth loving: Less than a foot long with a waterproof pocket that’ll fit up to 20 wipes, plus a changing pad, slots for cards or cash, and a hook for keys or a pacifier, you can easily wipe down this vegan leather bag without worrying about wear and tear.

As a parent, you want to be prepared for anything and everything when you head out the door with your baby, whether it’s for that doctor's checkup, a long-awaited trip to Grandma's house, or a walk in the park. One item you really can’t go without is a well-stocked diaper bag, equipped with all the essentials you need to keep your baby happy, clean, and dry. Read on to discover why a diaper bag is a must-have, what to pack in it, and how to pack it for optimum convenience.

3 Quick Tips to Pack Your Diaper Bag

Organize by category

Organize by category

Cluster items together so they’re easy to grab. Be sure to use the pockets to create compartments - small plastic bags work well too!

Portion bottles

Portion bottles

For breast milk, store what you need in a cooler. For formula, measure the powder and water separately, ready to mix when needed.

Stop leaks

Pack potentially leaky items in a resealable plastic bag, to protect your diaper bag and its contents.

Why You Might Need a Diaper Bag

“Do I really need a diaper bag?” is a question you might have been asking yourself when putting together your baby shower registry or shopping for baby gear.

Technically, you could get away with using a backpack or tote bag you already have at home, but if you’re looking for something more specific to the task, there are plenty of great shoulder diaper bags or backpack diaper bags on the market that are designed for carrying your diapering gear and other essentials for your baby.

Many diaper bags include extra features like changing pads or cooler bags to help keep breast milk or baby food chilled when you’re on the go. Most diaper bags come with lots of pockets and compartments. And, with some diaper bags, you don’t even need to carry a separate handbag or purse, as there’s a parent pocket or pouch for stowing your phone, wallet, and keys.

When it comes to the look, some diaper bags are disguised as normal backpacks or totes, with a modern and neutral design, while others come in a sweet pattern or shade you'd expect to see in a diaper bag. Take your pick!

What to Pack in Your Diaper Bag

The must-haves you need to pack in your diaper bag depend on where you’re going, the weather, and how long you'll be out and about for. In this section, we list the basic diaper bag essentials as well as some diaper bag extras you might consider adding. Beyond these, consider what you might need to keep your baby comfortable based on what you’re doing and any special needs you and your little one might have.

Diaper Bag Essentials

Below is a list of diaper bag essentials, perfect for a quick outing, a day trip, or even an overnight stay:

Pack one diaper in your diaper bag for every two or three hours you'll be away, plus one or two extras just in case.

A great option: Pampers wipes , which are designed for your baby’s sensitive skin. Some wipes come in a travel-size pack, which could be useful if space is at a premium in your diaper bag.

  • Diaper rash cream

Choose a travel-size diaper rash cream to save space. You can also use petroleum jelly or a barrier ointment to help prevent diaper rash .

  • Changing pad

Most diaper bags come with one, but if not, throw in a changing pad or a few disposable pads, as you never know where you'll end up needing to change your baby.

  • Hand sanitizer

Just in case you can't wash your hands before and after a diaper change, or before feeding your baby.

  • Nursing cover

Nursing covers are really versatile. They're handy for extra privacy when breastfeeding, and they can also be used as a light blanket or to throw over the stroller for added sun protection.

  • Burp cloths

Pack one or two burp cloths or even washcloths for your baby’s spit-up, or for wiping up spills.

  • Bottles and feeding supplies

If you are using them, pack baby bottles and other feeding supplies like bottle nipples, pre-made formula (or powdered formula for mixing later), or a portable bottle warmer.

  • Food, snacks, and water

If your baby is eating baby food , pack as much of it as you’ll need. If you have an older baby or toddler, pack some travel-friendly snacks, like O-shaped cereal or fish-shaped crackers, as well as water. You may want to pack some snacks and water for yourself as well.

If you use a pacifier for your baby, store it in a re-sealable bag to keep it sanitary.

  • Waterproof bag

This will come in handy for wet or soiled clothing or a dirty burp cloth.

  • Change of clothes

This is especially important for day trips or an overnight stay, but even on a short outing your little one can have a poop explosion that requires a quick change of clothes. Don’t forget extra socks.

  • Nursing pads

Tuck a few of these into your bag, and then into your bra, to help with breast milk leaks.

  • Wallet and phone

If you're not taking your purse, transfer your phone and wallet, and any other must-haves like keys, to your diaper bag, preferably in an easy-to-access pocket or pouch so you can find them when you need them.

Diaper Bag Add-ons

Going out with your baby can be unpredictable—sometimes having the essentials isn’t enough. With practice, you’ll get to know which items are crucial and what you can go without, as well as how to recognize what extras you’ll need based on things like the weather and how long you’ll be out for. To help you get started, take your diaper bag to the next level with the following add-ons:

Use it for extra shade over your baby stroller’s canopy, for added warmth in cooler weather, or for extra cushioning under your baby’s changing pad.

Extra layering

You may want to pack an extra layer for your little one, like a light sweater for chilly spring nights or a thicker jacket for winter.

It’s a good idea to have sunscreen on hand, though keeping your little one out of direct sunlight, and protecting her with clothing and a wide brimmed hat, is the best strategy.

In winter, you’ll want to have a warm knitted hat for your baby, and in summer a wide-brimmed hat to protect him from the sun.

If you’re going somewhere where you suspect your little one might get bored, pack a favorite plush animal, a board book , a rattle, or a teething toy.

You never know when your baby or toddler will end up with a scrape or a scratch, especially if you’re headed to the playground. Have some bandages on hand for any little accident. The cartoon character kind (or something colorful or sparkly) will definitely help make his booboo feel better. If you have a small portable first-aid kit you could pack that.

If you’re taking an overnight trip with your little one, don’t forget to pack her pajamas, sleep suit, or wearable blanket.

Whether you’re bottle feeding your baby or you’re already feeding him solids, you’ll want a bib to keep the mess at bay.

Extra shirt

Whether breast milk leaked or you got covered in spit-up while burping your baby, having an extra shirt on hand might save the day from time to time.

Diaper Bag Packing Tips

If you’re formula feeding with powdered formula, measure out the formula and water and store them separately for mixing when your baby is ready for a feed. If you’re giving breast milk from a bottle, keep bottles of the appropriate amounts in a cooler.

Here are some tips for packing and organizing your diaper bag so everything is easy to access and reach:

Your diaper bag shouldn’t be like a black hole. Instead, keep things in the right spot, so that you know where to look to find them. If your diaper bag has pockets and compartments, decide what you will put where and always have these items in their regular spots. If the bag you’re using doesn’t have many compartments, use small bags, like clear re-sealable plastic bags, to pack different categories of items together. For example, pacifiers and bottle nipples in one bag, diaper changing items in another.

No matter how well you’ve packed your baby’s milk, the water bottle for yourself, or the baby sunscreen, leaks are bound to happen. No one wants to be digging around in a wet, icky bag. The best idea is to pack each of these potentially leaky items in a re-sealable plastic bag so that if a leak does happen, it’ll just go in the bag and not all over the contents of your diaper bag.

Women wearing travel diaper bags

It’s no big revelation to say that traveling with kiddos can be stressful (but also, don’t try to wait until it’s not ). There’s just so much stuff — like the snack cup , the favorite lovey , and the paci — not to mention the constant threat of meltdowns, delayed flights or holiday traffic, and leaving something behind. There isn’t much to do in preparation for the unknowns but when it comes to handling all the stuff , the best travel diaper bags make it easy. Okay, fine. Easier .

To help you find the right travel bag — and to know what exactly to put in it — keep reading (there’s even a handy packing checklist).

What Are The Carry-On Restrictions?

With most airlines, every passenger with a ticket is allowed to bring one carry-on bag. It’s important to check with your airline for specific sizing, but your carry-on bag should easily fit underneath the seat in front of you , and the max dimensions are 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches high (on most major airlines). Ticketed passengers are also allowed a single personal item — a purse , laptop bag, backpack , or diaper bag. When traveling as a family, the less you have to carry the better. So, when your diaper bag can double as a carry-on? Well, let’s just call that a travel-savvy parent hack.

What Makes A Great Travel Diaper Bag?

First of all, you’ll want a bag that’s easy to carry. Backpacks and cross-body bags are winners because they keep your hands free for, you know, strollers and car seats, and actual children. It’s also important to look for bags that open wide so you can see everything at a moment’s notice without rifling around into the abyss. Lots of pockets, especially zippered ones on the exterior, for organizing the chaos (and all those travel toys ) is key. And you’ll appreciate extras, such as a trolley sleeve, pacifier holder, or multiple handles when you’re trekking through an airport.

Finally, aesthetics matter. Whether you prefer a minimalist diaper bag, a leather tote, or a modern look, there are a number of styles to choose from, and some are even waterproof (aka wipeable) because, well, sh*t happens.

What Goes In A Diaper Bag On A Plane?

All the normal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) restrictions, including the 3-1-1- rule , apply to carry-on bags. This means you are only permitted to bring liquid or gels containing 3 ounces or less and that they must all fit in one single quart clear plastic bag. However, parents traveling with infants are allowed to break the 3-ounce rule when packing breast milk, formula, and baby food. Just give the agent a head’s up and remove them from your bag before going through security. Other than that, most typical diaper bag items can be packed as usual.

Air Travel With a Baby: Packing Checklist

Here are a few items to consider when you're packing your travel diaper bag for a trip with kids:

  • Plastic bags/wet bags for dirty diapers or soiled clothes
  • Multiple changes of clothes
  • Baby food, snacks, formula, milk, etc.
  • Bottles or sippy cups
  • Breast pads
  • Diaper cream
  • Changing pad
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Pacifiers and/or loveys
  • Medication, pain relievers, first aid kit

Below, we’ve gathered the best diaper bags for jet-setting or hitting the road with a toddler . May the naps be long and the meltdowns be minimal — either way, you’ve got this .

01 A Fan-Fave Travel Backpack With A Pocket For Everything

Diaper Bag for Travel Backpack

This fan-favorite diaper bag backpack — with an impressive overall 4.8-star rating on Amazon after 27,000 reviews — comes with a changing pad, diaper organizer, two insulated pockets, and two large zipper closure compartments. You can wear it or carry it by the top handles, and it has a total of 16 pockets, including one hidden security pocket for travel documents. There’s even a padded laptop compartment because who knows? Your baby could just sleep the entire way and let you catch up on a few things. And you’ll love knowing that this roomy yet lightweight pick is waterproof, too.

Helpful review: “This is genius and makes traveling so much easier. Unlike a standard backpack where you put things into a big dark hole, this one has a place for everything. We have recommended this to all of our friends for their personal traveling. Using this as an airline carry-on solves a lot of problems, and holds a LOT of things in an organized and easily accessible manner.”

She wanted to know if it was marketed as a diaper bag because it doesn’t scream ‘diaper bag’ by simply looking at it. [...] It’s also COMFORTABLE. Diaper Bag Checklist: What to Pack in a Diaper Bag

profile picture of Joanne Chen

New moms and dads: Meet your best friend, one that you’ll want by your side all the time. We’re talking about your diaper bag , of course. Consider it a security blanket for parents, or a heavy-duty mom purse. Whatever life throws your way—from incomprehensible freakouts to sudden hunger pangs to, yes, poopy diapers—a well-packed pouch that slings over your shoulders (and clips easily onto the stroller) can make messy situations disappear. Of course, what’s a diaper bag without its all-important contents? Yes, you’re going to be carrying a lot of stuff. Here, your trusty checklist to ensure all your diaper bag essentials are exactly where you need them when you need them.

Diaper Bag Essentials

Trying to figure out what to pack, and what can reasonably be left behind? Mentally walk through everything you’ll want (and need) to do with baby when you’re out and about. To get you started, these are the things pretty much all moms should have on their diaper bag checklists:

Baby cream or ointment

Diaper cream

A changing pad

Disposable diaper bags

Burp cloths or washcloths

Hand sanitizer

Food for baby (and bottles !)

A change of clothes

A baby hat (for winter or summer )

A light blanket

Light snacks (for toddlers)

Anything else you usually tote in your purse (That includes your phone, extra money, keys and essential contact info.)

Diaper Bag Extras

Part of crisis management is having the right gear at the right time. However, since babies are so unpredictable, it doesn’t hurt to have all your tools of the parent trade at your fingertips, all the time (or at least most of the time). Here’s what to consider adding to your checklist to bring your diaper bag of tricks to the next level:

Reusable placemats. Sure, your server has wiped down that highchair with a damp cloth. But do you know where that cloth has been?

Nasal aspirator . You’ll have a much happier baby out about town if you can clear their stuffy nose like a pro.

Nursing cover. Lots of moms find this helpful when breastfeeding in public , although it’s certainly not an essential for all.

An extra shirt for yourself. How often have you gone about your business only to catch a reflection of yourself with spit-up all over your collar? Exactly.

Nursing and vaginal pads . For you, not baby! These are especially essential in the first few weeks after birth when your flow is heavy.

Tips for Packing a Diaper Bag

If baby has thrown up all over their sweater or your tot is hysterical with hunger, having to search through a black hole of a bag or deal with wet things that shouldn’t be wet only adds to the stress. Here’s how to keep your diaper bag essentials at the ready:

Stash different categories of diaper bag essentials into smaller (preferably clear or different-colored) bags. It’s what mountain climbers do with stuff sacks in their backpack, so they can find things in a jiffy. (And when you’re a mom, every outing feels like an expedition.) Put feeding items in one section, diaper change items in another, your own stuff in another and so on.

Include a diaper-bag caddy. Essentially an offshoot of the previous tip, this consists of strapping a regular pack of wipes onto the lid of an empty wipe tub with an elastic headband. This leaves room inside the tub for diaper-changing essentials (diapers, a change of clothes in case of blowouts and a foldable portable changing pad). So when baby needs a change—and fast!—you can just grab and go.

Pre-portion each bottle. If you’re mixing formula, pre-measure water and pour into each bottle. Add pre-measured formula to each bottle only when you’re ready to feed baby with it. With breast milk , stick pre-filled bottles into a portable cooler pack if you’re going to be spending a good amount of time out and about on a hot day.

Prevent leaks. Even if you’ve double-checked that the milk, water and sunscreen containers are screwed on tight, Murphy’s Law says they can loosen up when jostled. So pack each in a sealed plastic bag, just in case.

Diaper Bag Essentials to Shop

Coterie Diaper

You’ll need one diaper for every two hours you’re out—and maybe a few extra, just to be safe. Stock up on our favorite nappies on the market from Coterie. These standout diapers are designed to move seamlessly with baby, minimizing leaks and blowouts. Plus, the super-soft, hypoallergenic material quickly absorbs moisture. The result? A lower chance of diaper rash—perfect for keeping baby comfy while out and about.

Healthybaby Wet Wipes

Looking for dependable wet wipes to keep baby clean on the go? Opt for this plant-based pick from Healthybaby. Take the whole pack with you, or keep a few moist in a plastic sandwich bag to save on space. They’re the multi-tasker of all diaper bag essentials—handy for wiping baby’s bum, your hands and the changing pad, especially after use in a public restroom (ick).

Baby ointment

Aquaphor Baby Travel Size Healing Ointment

This multi-use baby ointment can moisturize delicate skin from head to toe. The healing, fragrance-free formula can be used to soothe chapped, irritated skin caused by teething, drool rash or diaper rash. It’s the multipurpose product you’ll never want to be without. What’s more, this travel-sized tube won’t take up precious space in your pouch.

Changing pad

Skip Hop Portable Baby Changing Pad

Even if your bag comes with a changing pad, you might find you need something a little larger. Pop this convenient clutch in your diaper bag, clip it to the stroller or carry it on its own to have a safe, clean spot for baby in no time. Don’t let its compact silhouette fool you—this option has a mesh pocket (big enough to hold cream, wipes and four diapers) and a front-zippered pocket (perfect for your keys and wallet).

Ubbi On The Go Gray Bag Dispenser

Diaper changes are a messy business, which is where this on-the-go bag dispenser comes in. The simple device is easy to use and refill—plus, you can attach it to your bag or the stroller, thanks to its silicone strap. Each roll contains 12 lavender-scented bags to keep bad smells at bay, which is especially handy if you won’t have access to a trash can for a while!

Philips Avent Soothie Pacifier

If baby uses pacifiers, you’ll want to keep a few ready to go at all times. These parent-approved soothers come in a pack of four for less than $8, making them a budget-friendly pick to boot. Store them in a clean bag along with extra bottle nipples to keep everything sanitary.

aden + anais Cotton Muslin Washcloth Set

Thanks to its versatility, a washcloth is another diaper bag must-have. Toss in as many as you think you’ll need, then add a few more. Made from muslin, these adorable washcloths are gentle yet durable, and will only get softer over time. When they inevitably get dirty, simply toss them in the washing machine and tumble dry them for clean cloths again in no time.

Honest Hand Sanitizer Spray, Free + Clear

Hypoallergenic? Check. Plant-based? Check. Quick-drying? Check. This pick checks all of the boxes on our list when it comes to choosing the best hand sanitizer for diaper bags. It’s available in a fragrance-free formula, and can be counted on to combat 99.9 percent of germs and bacteria which may be on your hands before (or after) you clean feed or change baby. Better yet, it comes in a convenient pack of two.

Baby bottles

Philips Avent BPA Free Natural Baby Bottles

Whether you’re packing infant formula or pumped breast milk, you’ll need dependable baby bottles to get the job done. This top-notch option has a no-drip design and an anti-colic valve for your convenience and baby’s comfort. Simply figure out how many feedings-worth you’ll need and pack accordingly.

Change of clothes for baby

Bee Essentials Organic Short Sleeve Baby Bodysuits

You’ll need a change of clothes (or two) for baby because spit-up happens—as do blow-outs and leaky bottles. When messes occur, count on these sweet bodysuits for a quick outfit change. They’re made from super-soft organic cotton, and come in a handy pack of five. While you’re at it, throw in a couple of pairs of socks just in case.

LouLou Lollipop Top Knot Beanie

Whether you have a summer or winter baby, you’ll need a seasonally appropriate topper to block out sun or cold. This ultra-soft beanie is perfect for little ones who are 12 months or younger, and is made from gentle organic cotton. Choose from a variety of adorable patterns, like whales, flowers or safari animals .

Thinkbaby Clear Zinc Sunscreen SPF 30

For little ones 6 months or older, toss in some sunscreen if you’ll be out and about in a stroller or at the park. This baby-safe formula is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes and won’t leave a white cast behind. Reapply every two hours you’re out in the sun (or immediately after drying off with a towel) to keep your child’s skin protected.

Cloud Island Muslin Swaddle Blankets Adventure

No matter what the season, it’s always good to have an extra blanket on hand for unexpected breezes and drafty restaurants; they’re also useful to shade baby from the sun. These muslin swaddles are light and breathable while still being cozy, meaning they won’t be bulky in your bag. Available in a pack of three sweet designs.

Travel toys

Skip Hop Silver Lining Cloud Jitter Stroller Baby Toy

If there’s anything that keeps your child happy and occupied, throw it into the bag. We’re fans of this stroller toy for on-the-go entertainment because it has a handy clip and plenty of textures for baby to explore. The soft cloud gently vibrates when the teether is pulled, and has a star squeaker and crinkly raindrop for more multi-sensory engagement.

Gerber Snacks for Baby Grain & Grow Puffs

Snacks are essential for tots when the next meal is in the far-off future (i.e. five or more minutes away) because there’s no “hungry” with kids, just “hangry.” That being said, pack one that won’t ruin your kiddo’s appetite, like these blueberry puffs. They’re perfect for older babies and toddlers, and the slim canister is easy to tote in your bag or stroller.

Band-Aid Brand Adhesive Bandages Family Variety Pack, 110 Count

If you’re a parent to a toddler, you’ll invariably end up at the playground (even if you think you’re just going out for errands), making Band-Aids another diaper bag essential. This family pack comes with 110 flexible, waterproof bandages in all different shapes, sizes and colors. Even if your child’s boo-boo is a barely there scratch, one of these Toy Story-themed bandages is sure to make them feel better.

Water bottle

24 oz Standard Mouth Hydroflask with Flex Straw Cap

Keep yourself and your kiddo hydrated with a top-notch water bottle. This sleek, 24-oz. style will easily fit into your bag and can be counted on to keep its contents icy cold for hours on end. What’s more, it has a straw cap for easy sipping on the go.

Best Diaper Bag for Traveling: Buying Guide

Planning a trip with a baby requires lots of consideration.

Therefore, ensure you get reliable travel insurance covering your little one. Once that is sorted, a reliable diaper bag is a must-have.

However, before buying a diaper bag, it is advisable to look at the features. You need a big bag to carry all the baby essentials. It should also help you stay organized and should be easy to carry.

Here are some features to remember when buying a traveling diaper bag.

Capacity and Space

choose Diaper Bags for Traveling

Space is one of the most important features when choosing a diaper bag. If you have older babies or twins, you must get a big bag that can fit all the baby essentials.

However, it’s important to be mindful of how much space you are looking for in a travel diaper bag.

You don’t want a bag that is too big because if you pack everything in there, it may backfire on you when checking in luggage.

You want a good enough size that fits under a plane seat or into the overhead bin. Also, babies are heavy and moving around with them can tire you. You do not want a diaper bag to add extra weight because you will hate it.

Pockets and Compartments

A bag with pockets and compartments will help you stay organized. Get a bag that allows you to keep everything in its place.

Should you need to grab something on the go, it will be easy to retrieve it since it is partitioned.

Ease of Carrying

You need to get a bag that is easy to carry. Go for a diaper bag with padding to protect your shoulders when the bag is heavy.

For further ease of carrying, get a bag that can be attached to the stroller so that you can free your hands and back.

Style and Design

Best Travel Diaper Bags To Buy

The first thing to consider is the style and design of the bag you want. On a flight, you need to get a diaper bag as a carry-on bag.

Backpacks are the most common style for moms and dads, while moms prefer totes.

You need to choose the diaper style that fits your lifestyle and needs. For long-distance traveling, backpacks are ideal since they are comfortable to carry.

When shopping for the right diaper bag for travel, consider what your travel essentials are. For example, if you’d like to pack milk bottles, go for a bag with insulated pockets.

The ideal diaper bag should be easy to access stuff, so one with different compartments that are quick to access is ideal.

Final Thoughts

The best diaper bag for traveling should be spacious and easy to organize. The Ruvalino multipurpose bag is one of the best. It keeps parents organized but also helps you to fit everything.

If you are looking for something unusual, you can go for DBTAC, a military-style bag that is good for the job.

Packing a Diaper Bag for a Plane: 10 Essentials

By: Author Kim

Packing for yourself can be a challenge when traveling and flying. The stress of figuring out everything you need to bring for your baby can be extra hard. Don’t worry, though! Here are some helpful tips for packing a diaper bag for a plane so that you can enjoy your vacation.

travel size items for diaper bag

Table of Contents

What To Pack in a Diaper Bag for the Plane

Both a wet and dry bag.

If your child has a poopy diaper or throws up on their clothes, you are going to need somewhere to put those soiled items without getting everything dirty (or stinking up the airplane). A wet bag is essential to store dirty clothes, and even soiled diapers that might not fit in the trash cans onboard.

A dry bag can hold the essentials you need when going to the lavatories, or to tuck into the seat pocket while you are sitting in your seat.

Plenty of Diapers and Wipes

A diaper bag’s most important item is the diapers and wipes! Make sure you bring the amount that you need, and then add in one or two more just in case. It’s best to be prepared for delays and potential upset tummies due to the stress and lack of routine when traveling. Plus, you could always share extras with a mom in need.

You never know when a flight is going to be delayed. It could be 20 minutes or four hours. And often, when a flight is delayed you are on the tarmac and unable to stand up and rummage through your suitcase.

Everyone knows that a hungry child is a screaming child. Keep baby calm, and other passengers, too, by having extra food on hand just in case you are flying during feeding time. This includes items such as:

  • Baby formula
  • Breast milk
  • Squeeze pouches
  • Goldfish snacks

Consider using this diaper bag backpack to keep foods chilled if needed, as well as everything organized. Plus, it’s easier to carry through the airport and while using transportation.

Toys / Entertainment

You definitely don’t want your baby to get bored when flying, because that is when they get cranky! Bring a variety of toys to keep them entertained and switch things up when they get bored.

It is important to not bring toys that are loud, have flashing lights or will be a nuisance to other passengers. For instance, don’t bring the plastic keychain that clanks when your child shakes it in the air or a rattle with a squeaker inside. Instead, choose plush toys that are soft, silent and won’t hurt a fellow passenger if they are accidentally thrown in the air.

Change of Clothes

Bring at least one change of clothes for your child on a short flight. For longer flights, you might want to bring two or three changes of clothes for different temperatures. Long flights can get cold overnight, or could be warm while waiting to take off. Have a layer to make your child comfortable no matter what the temperature.

Don’t forget to have an extra shirt, pair of pants or jacket for you, too. If your baby spits up or has a leaky diaper, you will need a change of clothes as much as they do! If you are bringing a carry-on bag in addition to your diaper bag, your change of clothes is probably best in the separate luggage.

Changing Mat / Towel

Airplane bathrooms are gross for anyone trying to use the small spaces. When you are trying to change your baby, though, it can be really challenging to find a clean, flat space to lay them down. Be sure to bring a changing mat or even a towel to protect your child from the public surfaces on the plane and in the airport. Diaper bags such as this Tactical Baby Gear Diaper Bag have a changing mat included.

Ear Protection

If you are worried about your little one being scared or agitated from the loud noises of crowds and announcements on the plane and in the airport, consider bringing baby ear protection. These specially designed ear muffs for newborns and up to 36 months will help reduce and cancel out noises.

Pack Only What You Need

There is a balance between packing everything that you might need and trying to pack light. It seems like you can’t do it both, and you might be right. But with every item that you put in your diaper bag, ask if it is really necessary for a few hours.

You will need to carry your diaper bag and baby through the airport, get through security, and get everything settled in your seats. Too much weight, too many items and a bulging diaper bag can make things more stressful than necessary.

If you are bringing a wheeled carry-on, consider putting some of the items you likely won’t really need in your luggage. That way, you have them if they become necessary. But you don’t have to carry them in a bag on your shoulder while also carrying your child.

Does a diaper bag count as a carry-on?

When you are traveling with a baby,  a diaper bag does not count as a carry-on . In fact, a stroller and car seat do not count as extras when you are traveling with an infant, either.

You always want to check with the airline you are traveling with before packing just to be sure what the current regulations are. However, diaper bags have almost always not counted towards your carry-on baggage limit!

The Best Diaper Bags Tested by Parents for Comfort, Style, and Emergency Access

Backpacks, crossbody bags, and fanny packs that hold everything you need.

  • Our Top Picks

Our Testing Process

We also tested, factors to consider when buying a diaper bag, how to use diaper bags safely.

  • Your Questions, Answered

Parents / Jaclyn Mastropasqua

Diaper bags are one of those parenting products that used to be fairly simple to choose. That was before brands started innovating ways to make them stylish, comfortable, and even more useful for parents every time they leave the house. To help you sort through the best diaper bags to find the ones that suit your needs, we tested 17 of the top bags on the market in our lab and at home with our babies and toddlers.

Natasha Bhuyan, M.D., vice president of in-office care at One Medical, is both a physician and a new mom, so she’s recently done quite a bit of research on diaper bags. She tells Parents she was surprised by how much there was to learn about the topic. “Who knew something so seemingly straightforward could be so complicated!” Dr. Bhuyan says.

Well, we knew it, actually, so we tested these bags for features like comfort, capacity, style, organization, and ease-of-access —even for one-handed emergency diaper changes . We packed the bags full and tipped them over, to see if everything stayed organized or got all jumbled together. Because even if a diaper bag can hold everything you need, how useful is it if you can’t get to the things you need when you're holding a cranky, wet baby? We also took into account the bags' durability, looking at them after real-world use at the three- and six-month marks.

As far as price goes, our favorite diaper bag costs around $130, but the best diaper bags we selected range in price from just above $80 to upwards of $300 for more luxury picks. The best diaper bag for you, however, is the one that matches your own lifestyle, so read on to see what we found in testing.

Best Overall

Jujube zealous backpack.

Why We Like It : This pick is spacious yet compact, comfortable, with easy access and 17 prints and colors to choose from.

But Take Note : A wet bag isn’t included.

Unlike most other bags we tested, the Jujube Zealous is actually 100% machine-washable, which is just one of the reasons it’s at the top of our list. Another important reason is its many thoughtful pockets to hold diapers and much more. The side drink pockets are lightly insulated and can hold bottles up to 9.5 inches tall and 3 inches in diameter. We also liked the included loops designed to hold a rolled-up baby blanket as well as the top zippered compartment meant for holding your phone or other devices that’s also convenient for holding anything you need easy access to. And if you so wish, you can swap out the changing pad pocket for a place to stash a 15-inch or smaller laptop instead.

The compact bag, which comes in 17 different prints and colors, fits well in stroller baskets and has padded straps that make wearing it very comfortable. When fully packed in testing, it weighed just over 6 pounds. The carrying handle on the top is also handy for quick grabs. The only thing missing from this bag is a wet bag for soiled clothing, but if you add your own, there are plenty of pockets to stash it in. After months of testing, we also found that the material held up perfectly even with our admitted overpacking and was very easy to clean. That durability makes its mid-range $130 price tag a great investment.

The Details:

  • Dimensions: 3 x 16 x 5 inches
  • Weight: 2.10 pounds
  • Material: Microfiber with nylon lining
  • Accessories included: Changing pad, key holder
  • PHOTO: Parents / Tamara Staples

Most Comfortable

Bugaboo changing backpack.

Why We Like It : We gave this diaper bag high marks for being really comfortable, even when stuffed to the brim with baby supplies. And we loved that it has a dedicated laptop pocket for working parents-on-the-go.

But Take Note : It’s a large bag that could topple over a lightweight stroller pretty easily and the bottle holder pockets are narrow.

The Bugaboo Changing Backpack was another of our favorites during testing, and not just because of its pedigree brand. It has a different look than a lot of other diaper bags: It’s taller and more vertical to accommodate a 17-inch laptop and it’s very sleek and minimal. We liked that it was a bag that didn’t scream “Mommy diaper bag!” and could appeal to a variety of different style preferences. But looks aren’t everything; what we appreciated most about this bag was how we could stuff the bag full and still feel comfortable wearing it.

When it comes to using this bag, it has two convenient ways to access everything inside—from the top, like a regular backpack, and from a zipper in the front that opens the whole thing into a changing station with an included changing pad and everything you need in clever internal pockets. When it’s open this way, you don’t need to worry about things falling out, because there’s a swath of mesh material keeping it all in place. As we consider how our purchases impact our babies’ future, we’re also pretty happy to see that the water-repellent material of the bag is 100% recycled plastic.

Whether or not you plan on pairing this backpack with a Bugaboo stroller, you can take advantage of the fact that it was made with strollers in mind. Two Velcro straps attach it to the handlebar of any stroller, giving your back a break while allowing quick access to anything inside. Just be sure not to weigh it down more than your baby can balance it—backwards tipping is one reason some experts advise against ever hanging bags on a stroller.

  • Dimensions: 8 x 5.5 x 12 inches
  • Weight: 2.2 pounds
  • Material: 100% recycled PVC and PFC-free material; polyurethane bottom
  • Accessories included: Changing mat, mesh clutch, insulated clutch, insulated bottle holder, universal stroller adapters
  • PHOTO: Parents / Jhett Thompson

Best 2-in-1

Caraa nylon baby bag.

Why We Like It : The padded material is oh-so-comfortable, it has more pockets than you may even need, and its thoughtful design makes packing and using very convenient for parents wrangling a wriggly baby.

But Take Note : It’s a luxury diaper bag with a luxury price tag.

The Caraa is built with traveling in mind, from the puffy exterior that could almost double as a pillow to the convertible straps that let you wear it as a backpack or over your shoulder. (It has a luggage strap and stroller hooks for two bonus ways to tote it, too.) The recycled nylon exterior is 100% waterproof, so it not only cleans up easily, it also repels spills and stains in the first place. It’s also very durable and we gave it top marks for how well it held up even after months of use and testing—it still looks brand new, even after we accidentally spilled coffee inside it.

We especially loved the long zipper pulls, which was a feature we didn’t see in the other diaper bags we tested. They made accessing the pockets and supplies we needed very convenient. There are plenty of pockets and storage compartments, including a separate pull-out diaper caddy, tech pockets for grownups, insulated pockets for milk or food, and toy hooks outside the bag to keep everything well organized on the road. The one drawback we found, price tag aside, was that the backpack straps weren’t easy to adjust.

  • Dimensions: 12.25 inches tall; 2.75 inch handle drop
  • Weight: 2.5 pounds
  • Material: Recycled nylon with vegan leather detailing
  • Accessories included: Stroller hooks, insulated pockets, diaper caddy, toy hooks

Best Capacity

Honest city backpack.

Why We Like It : It’s a luxury-looking backpack with a nice price tag that checks all the boxes for accessories.

But Take Note : It might not fit in smaller stroller compartments, and most of the storage is inside only.

From none other than the company founded by Jessica Alba, the Honest City backpack is effortlessly cool, stylish, and downright functional. In fact, we feel like the overall design is so neutral that you could readily repurpose this diaper bag as a work bag when your child outgrows it. We also appreciate its wide, insulated pocket, comfortable straps, luxury look, and, above all, roominess.

The one thing we wished for when testing was a bit more accessibility on the outside of the bag. There are only two zippered exterior pockets—one on the front and one in the back—and they can be challenging to access, especially if the bag is really full or it’s in the bottom compartment of a stroller. And while it comes with a key holder, it too is in the main inner compartment of the bag, making it difficult to reach your keys while holding a baby.

  • Dimensions: 17.72 x 14.96 x 18.11 inches
  • Weight: 2.75 pounds
  • Material: 100% polyurethane vegan leather; PVC lining
  • Accessories included: Changing mat with zippered pocket, storage bag, insulated compartment, key holder, wet bag

Best for Outdoor Adventures

Babymoov diaper bag backpack.

Why We Like It : Unique shape and attractive colors make this an eye-catching pick that also happens to be water repellant

But Take Note : Instead of a pocket for water bottles, it has elastic straps that may not hold all bottles in place.

We appreciated some of the unique functions of this French-designed bag, such as the roll-top feature that lets you adjust the height of the entire bag, how easy it is to carry, and the overall shape and material of the bag. It has a large insulated pocket with a separate zippered access that can keep snacks and drinks away from other parts of the bag that may or may not contain outfits that have gone through a blowout. All of the immediate diaper changing supplies can be kept in the front pocket, which makes changing a diaper quickly much more convenient. The straps are also padded and comfortable and can detach to attach to a stroller. We also liked the pacifier pouch option.

We did feel that while the separated insulated compartment is convenient for feeding kids away from home, it may be bigger than some deem necessary. When that pocket is full, it takes away space from the other compartment. While the elastic straps meant to hold a water bottle on the side looks cool, they aren’t aren’t the most secure—our water bottle fell out during testing when we put the bag into a stroller basket.

  • Dimensions: 12.6 x 7.5 x 17.7 inches
  • Weight: 1 pound
  • Material: Water-resistant fabric
  • Accessories included: Removable changing pad, terry cloth towel, pacifier pouch, stroller hooks, key holder

Best Disguised Baby Gear

Herschel settlement sprout backpack.

Why We Like It : It’s high quality and very versatile. No one will know you’re carrying a diaper bag.

But Take Note : It has little in the way of parent-friendly organizational pockets.

We felt this bag is a quality choice for anyone looking for a diaper bag that can be used long after the baby years—but that’s also because it doesn’t have many parent-specific features. It’s not even called a diaper bag on the brand’s site, which is sure to appeal to a certain type of dad who’s afraid of owning anything that looks like “baby gear.” Aside from the removable changing mat, none of the features really stood out to us as made with kids and their many needs in mind. It has very few internal pockets and was harder to zip and unzip one-handed than other diaper bags we tested.

The large main compartment has a convenient removable middle insert that can divide the space in half to organize the contents. Or, if you want just one large space, just take out the insert.

  • Dimensions: 5.75" L x 12.25" W x 17.75” H
  • Weight: 1.44 pounds
  • Material: 100% denier polyester
  • Accessories included: Changing mat

Itzy Ritzy Mini Diaper Bag Backpack

Why We Like It : It’s chic and compact, for when you want to carry just the essentials for a quick outing.

But Take Note : Compact = smaller, so it doesn’t hold much more than the basics.

A pared-down version of the popular full-sized Itzy Ritzy, the mini gives you just the essentials: a diaper bag with four interior pockets, four exterior pockets (two of which are insulated bottle pockets), and a changing pad. The inside also has a pouch compartment to separate storage.

In testing, we were surprised by how much you could pack into this small bag, though it is still best suited for day outings or quick errands, not overnights. If you put a bottle in each pocket, it actually makes the bag pretty wide—we struggled to fit it in a stroller compartment that way. We also felt that the straps were less comfortable than most of the other diaper bags we tested. It’s so cute, however, you may find yourself forgiving those flaws.

  • Dimensions: 13.75 x 7.5 x 11.5 inches
  • Weight: 2.21 Pounds
  • Material: Polyurethane
  • Accessories included: Zippered changing pad

Best Changing Station

Baby brezza dante changing station diaper bag.

Why We Like It : An integrated yet removable changing station means you’ll never have to change your baby on the floor again.

But Take Note : The bag is on the larger end and doesn’t have any easy-access outside pockets.

We were intrigued by the removable drop-down changing station in this bag, even if it’s not the most practical thing to use when your baby gets older. Still, the editor who took it home to use with her baby declared that from now on, she’d never want a diaper bag without this feature. We were also happy to report that the bag basically looked brand-new after months of use.

The packed bag was comfortable both in the lab and the real world, and we were impressed by its interior spaciousness and its many organizational features—there’s even a separate antimicrobial pocket for pacifiers. That being said, however, the bag was too big for some of us, and with only three zippered pockets on the outside, there’s no easy way to quickly grab a bottle or diaper and wipes.

  • Dimensions: 16 x 14 x 7 inches
  • Weight: 3 pounds
  • Material: Polyester
  • Accessories included: Detachable changing station

Best for Two Kids

Béis ultimate diaper backpack.

Why We Like It : We love the magnetic top closure that makes accessing the interior a snap (get it?) and the removable stylish fanny pack pouch that made us feel like a Kardashian.

But Take Note : It’s so huge we had trouble finding what we needed once we got inside the bag.

We appreciated all the bells and whistles this diaper bag offers, like the built-in changing pad that’s similar to the Baby Brezza—although this option has a padded head space and isn’t removable—and pacifier and teether holders. There’s also a convenient pocket with a covered wipe dispenser (although we can imagine wipes may dry out this way).

The magnetic top closure for the top is handy for quickly getting and out, and the removable fanny bag is nice for stashing your own phone or keys on yourself while you’re out and about. The bag is so large, we suspected in the lab that it would be difficult to find what we needed, but out in the real world, that hasn’t been an issue. Compared to smaller bags, it felt heavy, but if you’ve got more than one kid in diapers, you’re just going to need that much stuff and the space for it. After months of use, this bag fully retained its shape and showed no signs of wear and tear.

The Details:

  • Dimensions: 12.5 x 16 x 7.25 inches
  • Weight: 3.3 pounds
  • Material: Nylon twill, vegan leather trim, channel stitched webbing, recycled poly lining with stain resistant finish, silicone accessories, nylon coil zippers, zinc alloy hardware
  • Accessories included: Key leash, removable zipper pouch fanny pack

Best Pockets

Dagne dover indi diaper backpack.

Why We Like It : The soft neoprene is as comfortable as it is durable, and many internal pockets keep kids’ essentials organized.

But Take Note : The bag is available in small, medium, and large, and the small can get very stuffed, so necessities are hard to access.

The soft neoprene material of this popular diaper bag reminds us of a cloud, and it feels almost that light when we’re wearing it too. Even packed full, adjustable straps made it so that no straps or parts of the bag were ever digging into our backs or arms. The material is also flexible, so even the small version of this bag (which also comes in medium and large) can accommodate a lot of stuff.

Given how many parents have recommended Dagne Dover, we expected to be wowed by this bag in the lab, but it didn’t wind up at the top of our list at the time. In the lab, it was harder to use than other backpacks when it was stuffed full of baby supplies. But when one of our editors took it home, she loved using it. She especially appreciated how many interior pockets it had to keep her toddler’s stuff organized when she was on vacation, and it was so comfortable, she was able to wear it and leave her stroller storage area free for other cargo. The neoprene really stood up well to the abuse of a beach vacation, too, and it still looks as good as new.

  • Dimensions: Small size: 10 x 6 x 11 inches
  • Weight: 3.8 pounds
  • Material: Neoprene and performance air mesh with lining made from recycled plastic bottles
  • Accessories included: Key leash, wet bag, shoe bag, changing mat, zippered pouch, and stroller clips

Best Messenger Bag

Royalfair messenger bag.

Why We Like It : It’s affordable and can be carried in a variety of different ways.

But Take Note : It doesn’t include any accessories, like a changing mat or clutch.

OK, we admit this is not the most luxurious bag on the market, and the Amazon listing may leave some things lacking. But if you want a messenger bag style for your baby’s needs, this pick is convenient, primarily because of the large open side pocket. Although the large exterior is designed to appear like two pockets, it’s actually one large pocket, which is ideal because you can simply reach in and grab what you need while holding a baby on the other hip.

In addition to the exterior pocket, there are also 10 interior pockets, including two insulated bottle holders. We didn’t test this bag ourselves, but it comes highly recommended by parents, who particularly like that you can choose between the small bag size, great for quick outings, and the medium, which is more suited for overnight or traveling. It also comes in four different colors: black, gray, navy blue, and purple (with quilted fabric).

  • Dimensions: Small: 11.8x 4.5 x 11.8 inches; medium: 15.5 x 5 x 11 inches
  • Weight: Small: 15.8 ounces; medium: 1.39 pounds
  • Material: Nylon
  • Accessories included: Insulated bottle pockets

Best Clutch

Skip hop pronto changing station.

Why We Like It : You can stash everything you need for quick diaper changing, and fit this into your own regular backpack or bag.

But Take Note : It holds only about four large diapers.

This editor-favorite clutch is cute and compact. We love that it works on its own for diaper-changing on the go, or you can throw it in a larger bag for a quick grab and clean. With the attached strap, you can also hang it from your wrist or a stroller.

We loved having a clutch on hand for those times when we wanted to leave a diaper bag at home or when space was at a premium, such as squeezing into tiny airplane bathrooms. And the seven available designs aren’t terrible to look at either.

  • Dimensions: 21.5 x 0.25 x 36 inches
  • Weight: 0.75 pounds
  • Material: Polyvinyl chloride and polyester
  • Accessories included: Changing mat and wipes holder

Best Fanny Pack

Béis diaper pack.

Why We Like It : It’s larger than a typical diaper clutch, so you can use it as a full diaper bag and still look very stylish.

But Take Note : Because it is a rather large fanny pack, it might not be convenient to wear when you’re also carrying your baby.

This fanny pack has everything you need to keep your favorite fanny fresh and clean. It’s larger than a clutch and can hold diapers, wipes, a small spare outfit, and other essentials like diaper rash cream. Plus, it has a wipe-dispensing pocket and a changing pad.

You can also wear this diaper pack as a traditional fanny pack or as a crossbody bag. And while we didn’t test this option ourselves, reviewers on the Beis site note that it’s the perfect bag to take grocery shopping, through the airport, or on quick errands. Though it looks very stylish, be aware that it is bigger than your typical fanny pack.

  • Dimensions: 11 x 7 x 3.5 inches
  • Material: Nylon Twill with stain resistant finish, vegan leather trim, poly webbing, recycled poly lining
  • Accessories included: Key fob, wipe dispenser, changing pad

Best Crossbody

Petunia pickle bottom criss-cross sling bag.

Why We Like It : You can wear this sling three ways, on your front, shoulder, or back.

But Take Note : It doesn’t include any accessories, like a changing mat.

Simple is the name of the game if you’re going with a crossbody, and we love how easy this one is to sling over your shoulder or across your chest while keeping everything secured. While being incredibly lightweight, it’s still spacious with a zip-close main compartment, an insulated zippered front pocket, and a lined pocket on the back to easily access your phone or keys.

We didn’t test this sling for ourselves, but other parents note that it will fit around three diapers, wipes, a onesie, and burp cloth.

  • Dimensions: 3.9 x 7.9 x 11 inches;
  • Weight: 13.76 Ounces
  • Material: Vegan leather
  • Accessories included: None

We tested these bags for everything from whether they’d help you change a diaper one-handed  to how comfortable they were to walk with while fully packed. We looked at how easy it was to pack them full of everything we might need to leave the house with a baby—and then unpack it again to search for a screaming child’s bottle or pacifier in a hurry. We had our parent testers cram all of the bags into a stroller compartment, reach in for supplies they needed, and pull the bag back out again, all things you would need to do in real life with a baby or toddler. We also tipped the bags over to see whether the contents got jumbled inconveniently. Finally, we took them out into the real world for long-term testing with our real kids (and their dirty diapers).

We also spoke with several experts who could provide insight into some of the features to look for in a diaper bag, what to pack in a diaper bag, and how to use the bag safely, even immediately postpartum.

Abby Ludwig , Gugu Guru's vice president of parent education, provided insight into diaper bag design, function, and materials. Natasha Bhuyan , M.D., vice president of in-office care at One Medical gave expert insight as both a physician and a new mom who recently shopped for her own best diaper bag. And injury prevention coordinator Kelley Miller with Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital also provided additional advice on safety tips when using a diaper bag.

  • Bag Nation Diaper Bag Backpack : For the $100 price tag, we felt there were better choices that offered more accessories and convenience.
  • Ruvalino Diaper Bag Backpack : One of our parents described this backpack as an “accordion” because it has tightly-fit pockets that can hold a lot of accessories. However, the tight fit also made it hard to access what we actually needed.
  • Skip Hop Mainframe Diaper Bag : While this bag had some functionality, we just couldn’t get on board with the design or uncomfortable fabric. A diaper bag is something you use a lot in the first few years of parenting and we want something we enjoy too!

A diaper bag might be for your baby, but you and/or a partner and other caregivers will be the ones hauling that thing around, so you want to make sure it’s comfortable to wear. Look for options like adjustable straps (there can be a shock the first time a shorter partner uses a backpack diaper bag that a taller partner has used!) and wide shoulder straps for comfort. Also pay attention to the bottom of the bag—if it’s built to stay standing up, the bottom may be structured and bump against your back in an irritating or painful way.

“The size shouldn’t be too big or too small,” says Dr. Bhuya. “While it’s tempting to buy a larger bag in case you need the space, for day-to-day use, a medium size bag is easier. Consider a larger bag for longer travel.”

Capacity and Organization

The thing about kids is that they change very quickly, and by the time your child reaches toddlerhood, you’ll probably be amazed at what you will find in your diaper bag that you don’t even remember packing in there. The point is, you will most likely stash a lot of supplies in your bag, and having the ability to keep things organized with options like zippered compartments, storage bags or cubes, and extra pockets can make a big difference.

Dr. Bhuya also recommends looking for varying pockets that can help separate dirty and clean items. Built-in coolers are also helpful for parents that need to stash breast milk or formula on-the-go.

Ease of Access

You might never realize how important easy access to your diaper bag’s essentials is until you have an emergency and need that diaper ASAP. Zippers can provide easy access and as Dr. Bhuyan points out, can also avoid waking up a baby—as opposed to the louder Velcro option.

Bottle-feeding parents will also appreciate ease of access for feeding supplies—for instance, a diaper bag that offers a built-in cooler or bottle holder on the side can make your life a lot easier. Dr. Bhuyan also recommends looking for a diaper bag with a stable shelf area on the bottom for more convenient access: “The stability keeps it upright,” she notes.

The style of a diaper bag refers to both the practical design—such as backpack, carrier, or clutch—as well as the aesthetic. And frankly, both matter. Consider how you will primarily be using the diaper bag. If you’re planning on doing a lot of traveling or walking and need to be hands-free, a diaper bag backpack might make the most sense.

If you need to use the diaper bag primarily with a stroller, you may prefer something more compact that fits in a stroller cargo area or can attach to it. And lastly, you definitely want a diaper bag that you enjoy using and looking at. It took me several kids before I realized I could get a diaper bag that I liked, not just one I thought I needed because it looked kid-friendly. (I’m looking at you, Winnie-the-Pooh.)

Dr. Bhuyan is a big fan of backpack diaper bags over messenger bags or totes. “It’s better to have the weight distribution evenly across your body rather than just one side,” she explains. “[It’s] ultimately better for your posture and spine.”

Parents who have recently given birth—whether that’s vaginally or via a C-section—will also want to take special consideration to avoid bending or carrying heavy weights in their diaper bags. Dr. Bhuyan recommends avoiding any type of diaper bag that could have a strap around the abdomen and to try to pack the bag as lightly as possible.

“Store heavier objects in the center and lighter objects in the sides to keep the bulk of the weight centered,” she suggests. And don’t forget that material matters: “The material should not be scratchy or uncomfortable,” Dr. Bhuyan adds.

If you plan on using your diaper bag with a stroller, Dr. Bhuyan says always stash the bag in the stroller’s storage basket over clipping the bag onto a stroller. “This is actually a safety risk, as the diaper back could cause the stroller to tip over, since most stroller handlebars were not designed for hanging objects,” she explains.

And even stashing the bag in the stroller isn’t completely risk-free either, because she warns that diaper bags with long straps or unnecessary cords could pose a risk to older babies or children who will want to grab at them. Injury prevention coordinator Kelley Miller, with Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, also cautions that things like ointment, vitamins, and eye drops are often overlooked by parents.

“Honestly, many items that are not intended for babies to grab and eat can pose a risk, such as sunscreen, hand sanitizer or even wipes,” Dr. Bhuyan points out. “This is why it’s best to ensure all items, especially small items, are securely placed into the bag.”

Last but not least, when carrying smaller items that could be a choking hazard or known risks, like infant medication, it’s best to stow those items well out of reach within the diaper bag.

Dr. Bhuyan recommends the following quick diaper bag safety tips:

  • Wear the diaper bag snug to your body and avoid it hanging too low.
  • Choose thicker, shorter straps over long and thin straps.
  • Take advantage of adjustable straps to fit different body types.
  • If you’re walking a long distance, try to place the diaper bag in the bottom of a stroller if possible.
  • Call poison control at 1-800-222-1222 if you have questions regarding concerns or potential poison emergencies.

Your Questions, Answered

Do you really need a large diaper bag.

You don’t always need a large diaper bag. Depending on your baby’s age and feeding needs, you could definitely get away with leaving the house with just the basics of a spare outfit and diaper-changing supplies. But when it comes to babies, it’s always best to be prepared.

What materials are best for a diaper bag?

“Any material that's easy to wipe clean,” recommends Ludwig. Some of her favorites are vegan leather, nylon, and even polyester for their ease of cleaning over time, while Dr. Bhuyan recommends cotton and microfiber. And don’t forget to check that the inside of the diaper bag is easy-clean fabric as well, because spills and accidents will happen in the diaper bag too.

What should I pack in a diaper bag?

Ludwig points out that as your little one grows, your diaper bag needs will change, but she sticks to a basic three-category rule: something to eat (formula, breastmilk, or snacks), something to play with (toys, teethers, or loveys), and something to change into and clean up with—for both you and baby! Miller also recommends keeping a list of your child’s allergies, medications, or special needs in a diaper bag to provide to emergency personnel if needed.

Chaunie Brusie, RN, BSN, is a labor and delivery nurse turned writer and a mom of five kids ranging in age from teen to preschooler. She started her journey as a mom with a very uncool Winnie-the-Pooh diaper bag and eventually got cool when someone gifted her an Itzy Ritzy diaper bag that she now refuses to part with because a waiter once complimented her on it.
