Data is aggregated and compared on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis versus the previous month, quarter and year.

Data is selected from devices that can reliably infer their Daily and Yearly Common Evening Locations.

Data has been anonymized, standardized and normalized leveraging demographic data and PRIZM , a neighbourhood segmentation system.

Visits/Trips = the number of times an individual travels 60 km or more away from their common evening location and spent 1 or more nights in New Brunswick before returning to their common evening location.

Common Evening Location (CEL) = Used to infer the device home location (where the device is normally seen between 6PM and 8AM the following morning) over the last 365 days; The common evening location is assigned to the closest Postal Code.

VisitorView is developed by Environics Analytics . It creates overnight visitation estimates using a combination of privacy-compliant, anonymous mobile location data, administrative datasets and analytics.

Notes & analysis

Destination Canada is seeking to understand how safe residents of each province/region are feeling towards travelling to different places.

Approximately ~1,800 responses for the resident sentiment questions are collected from Canadians on a weekly basis through an online methodology. The study is fielded from Friday to Sunday preceding the report date. The study is weighted to be representative of the Canadian population according to census data, excluding the northern territories. The northern territories are excluded from this research due to sample feasibility issues given small population sizes. The questions are being asked by Leger, a market research provider.

Every week, respondents are asked a question evaluating their personal feelings of safety towards travel to various destination

Two questions are asked on a rotating basis and alternate each week and evaluate:

• The level of welcome residents have towards visitors to their own community
• The receptivity of residents towards seeing advertising promoting their own community

Destination Canada has requested a minimum of n=200 respondents every week from each province/region, with a minimum of n=50 respondents identifying as living in rural communities among each province/region.

New Brunswick proposes tourism levy on hotel stays

Proposal comes after budget reveals $8 million cut to tourism department.

New Brunswick is proposing an amendment that would allow municipalities to set their own tourism tax rates.

That means hotelgoers will pay a tax set by the municipality over and above regular hotel booking fees.

Currently, tourism levies are optional, and individual hotels can set their own rates, but if the bill passes it will become mandatory. The average tourism tax in other provinces in Atlantic Canada is three per cent.

That money would be used to promote New Brunswick as a tourist destination through social media campaigns, TV ads and billboards.

The tourism industry and municipalities have lobbied for this change for years, and the province said it will give more autonomy to local governments.

The proposed amendment comes on the heels of Tuesday's provincial budget, which included an $8 million cut to the Department of Tourism.

"The intent of this isn't to backstop and backfill some of the numbers in the Department of Tourism," said Minister of Environment and Local Government Jeff Carr.

"This is about … local governments, giving them their autonomy to raise those monies and promote their areas."

Margot Cragg, executive director of the Union of the Municipalities of New Brunswick, welcomed the change but said local service districts should have been included. 

"There's already efforts in different regions to work together to talk about not just their own community but the region in general," Cragg said. 

"And if the province is taking itself out of that conversation by saying that local service districts aren't participating at all, then that's a problem for regional collaboration."

Officials representing Fredericton and Moncton welcomed the amendment, but the New Brunswick Hotel Association expressed disappointment that its members were not included in the discussion.

"At first glance it would seem the province has focused on responding to municipalities and what they want, at the exclusion of industry," read a statement from Paulette Hicks, co-chair of the association.

"There's nothing preventing cash-strapped municipalities from labelling all matter of everyday operational spending as tourism improvements."

Federal money and sales taxes help pump up New Brunswick budget surplus

New Brunswick's finance minister says the province recorded a surplus of $500.8 million for the fiscal year that ended in March.

Ernie Steeves says the amount -- more than 10 times higher than the province's original $40.3-million budget projection for the 2023-24 fiscal year -- was largely the result of a strong economy and population growth.

The report of a big surplus comes as the province prepares for an election campaign, which will officially start on Thursday and end with a vote on Oct. 21.

Steeves says growth of the surplus was fed by revenue from the Harmonized Sales Tax and federal money, especially for health-care funding.

Progressive Conservative Premier Blaine Higgs has promised to reduce the HST by two percentage points to 13 per cent if the party is elected to govern next month.

Meanwhile, the province's net debt, according to the audited consolidated financial statements, has dropped from $12.3 billion in 2022-23 to $11.8 billion in the most recent fiscal year.

Liberal critic Rene Legacy says having a stronger balance sheet does not eliminate issues in health care, housing and education.

Pregnant pit bull with 10 puppies rescued from rat-infested B.C. home

Animal protection officers in British Columbia have rescued three pit bulls – including one that gave birth to 10 puppies – from a rat-infested home in Kelowna.

New Brunswick is in the Atlantic Time zone

The Atlantic time zone (UTC/GMT -4 hours) is 4 hours behind London time and 5 hours behind European time. If you are traveling from Ontario, Quebec or Maine, don’t forget to set your watch an hour ahead!

We also participate in Daylight Savings Time, which means that on the second Sunday in March, the clock goes ahead one hour – until the first Sunday in November when the clock goes back one hour.

Sales Tax, Tips

The sales tax is called the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) and is applied at a single rate of 15% to a base of goods and services. (This percentage is made up of 5% federal tax and 10% provincial tax.)

A tip of 15-20% of the total bill (before tax) at bars and restaurants is customary. Tips are also given to tour guides, taxi drivers, and for spa treatments and haircuts.
