How to Find the Best Bucharest Bus Tour

tour bus bucharest

When we visited Bucharest we wanted to see as much as we could in one day. We wanted to see all the most important attractions, on a budget. We wanted the best Bucharest bus tour.

what to do in bucharest hop on hop off Vlad the impaler

Hop On / Hop Off Bus Tours

We love hop on hop off bus tours. We have used them in London, Amsterdam, Vienna, Athens and Budapest. So when we checked online and found a hop on hop off bus tour in Bucharest , we were very happy. Now we knew there was a cheap way to see all the best tourist attractions in Bucharest .

This bus tour is slightly different to the others we’ve used. In all the other cities you normally get two or three different bus routes, with a boat tour as an optional extra. In Bucharest however, the city sightseeing bus tour is just a single bus route, and no boat option.

So the hop on hop off options are a bit limited in Bucharest . But to compensate for lack of options, the price is drastically discounted. This is probably the best priced of all Bucharest tours that money can buy.

what to do in bucharest hop on hop off open top

What’s the Cost for a Bucharest City Tour Bus?

The bus to choose is the Bucharest City Tour bus. At the time of writing, this is the only hop on hop off bus tour option in Bucharest. Those other cities we toured had 2, 3 or even 4 different bus tour companies to choose from. So the choice is quite easy in Bucharest .

Tickets cost 25 Romanian Lei for adults, and which is about $8.50. And kids are only 10 Lei. And tickets are valid for 24 hours. That makes this bus an absolute bargain. To get your ticket, just find a bus stop and pay the driver or ticket collector.

Audio Commentary

One other feature that we really like on hop on / hop off buses throughout Europe is the guided audio tour. Normally you get a free set of earphones on the bus, then plug it in and listen to a historical guided tour of the city. It’s wonderful to hear the guided commentary as you drive around and see all the attractions. Audio tours are normally in 15 to 20 different languages.

Bucharest city hop on / hop off bus is different. We asked the ticket collector if audio commentary is available on the bus. She apologized and informed us that the portable audio units are only in French or Italian. None in English.

what to do in bucharest hop on hop off orthodox churches

Our ticket collector said we can download a guide in English for free, however we were unable to locate this (I must admit, we didn’t try very hard). Headphones are not provided on this bus, you need to bring your own. Since we didn’t bring headphones we had our first hop on / hop off bus without audio guided commentary.

Like all the other hop on hop off bus tours, we were issued with it terrific free map. All the main attractions are listed, with a photo and a bit of a description. Very useful, but kind of difficult to unfold in a bus seat.

Companion App for Smartphone

One thing that’s not included on this tour is a companion app for your smart phone. Not a big problem because the map is so easy to follow, and folds up neatly to fit in your handbag.

what to do in bucharest hop on hop off old town

The thing we really liked about companion apps in other cities is the ability to locate a bus stop easily. The communion apps normally come with a live map showing the location of the buses, and the directions to the nearest bus stop. Not in Bucharest , since there’s no app available (not in July 2018, anyway). But anyone with some basic Google Maps skills, a smart phone and a map should be able easily find a tour bus stop.

Tour Bus Stops

There are 14 bus stops, and buses run every 15 minutes. What really annoyed us in some of the other cities is that the hop on / hop off buses finished too early. 5:30 to 6:00pm seems to be the norm throughout Europe. No problem in Bucharest however, because the hours are from 10 am until 9:30 or 10 pm.

We jumped on at bus stop number 6, the CEC, on the edge of Bucharest Old City. We didn’t have to travel very far to get to the number one attraction in Bucharest, the P alace of the Parliament at bus stop number 7. This is the main attraction that I really wanted to see, so we got off the bus at stop 7.

what to do in bucharest hop on hop off CEC

In mid July the weather was around 32°C and sunny. We found ourselves in the middle of the day without not much shade around. We were literally cooking on the top level of the double decker bus, without any shade. So when we got to the Palace of the Parliament we decided to take the tour, which last for one hour and 15 minutes. It was so comforting to escape the heat of the day in this lovely air conditioned palace.

Overall we spent about three hours in the Palace of the Parliament including the standard palace tour, having a cuppa, and waiting for the tour to start. I guess that goes with most stops involving a tour, you should probably allow around 3 hours per stop.

Back on the Bus

The tour was a lot more physical than I thought, lots and lots of stairs to climb. By the end of it we found that we were quite exhausted, and with aching feet. Time to get back on the bus for a rest. Time to head to the bus stop just around the corner from the Palace .

what to do in bucharest hop on hop off palace bus stop

It is such a relief to sit down on the bus after some strenuous walking on a hot summer day. Except that it is very hot sitting on the top level of the bus, without any shade. You really do need sunscreen on this bus tour during summer.

Northern End of the Circuit

Our next stop was to be at the north end of circuit where the Village Museum and the King Michael of Romania Park are located. Traffic was very thick by this time, around 4 pm. Bucharest is known for having terrible traffic problem problems, especially at peak hour. Same as practically every capital city on the planet, I guess.

The full bus circuit takes about 50 minutes in light traffic. In peak hour traffic, we figured it will take around two hours to do the full circuit, back to our starting point at bus stop number 6.

what to do in bucharest hop on hop off athanaeum

We never actually made it past bus stop number 8 on this day. Instead we ended up having a late lunch, relaxing and heading home ready for tomorrow’s touring activities. The north end of the circuit will have to wait for another day.

That’s the beauty of this inexpensive bus tour, if you don’t do the full circuit it’s not a big deal.

Overall Rating of the City Sightseeing Tour

So how does the Bucharest city to hop on hop off bus rate? Overall it’s a fairly basic bus tour. The buses are comfortable enough and have an open roof. Pretty much the same quality as you find in any other major city.

You’ll get great photo opportunities from the top level, because there is no roof to obstruct your view. And there truly are lots of magnificent sights to admire in Bucharest. The quality of these bus tours are comparable to any other we’ve been on, in other cities.

It was a bit too hot and sunny for us in the middle of the day, in the middle of summer, in July. It would be much more comfortable in the shoulder seasons at the start or end of summer. Or to start earlier in the morning, say 10 am.

what to do in bucharest hop on hop off bus tour

The prices are outstanding, it really is very cheap to do a full circuit of this beautiful city.  There are plenty of great attractions to see along the way, and it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.

So Many Attractions to See

So many attractions in fact, that unless you are as fit as an amazing race contestant, you’re not likely to see them all of Bucharest’s best tourist attractions in one day. You’re probably going to need two days to see most of the attractions in Bucharest , if you take this bus tour.

The good thing with this bus is that they run every 15 minutes, so you’ll never have to wait too long for the next bus. If you’re trying to figure out what to do in Bucharest , we thoroughly recommend taking the City Sightseeing Tour Bus.

what to do in bucharest hop on hop off palace of the parliament

Just have a look online at the bus route map and decide which stops you want to get off at, because you might not have time to see them all. Especially if you do a tour inside a museum or palace along the way. We say you should definitely give the Bucharest City Sightseeing Bus ago. Maybe even twice!

Transylvania Castles tour in 4 days from Bucharest

This tour was a great way to see Transylvania in a more relaxing way than taking a long day trip from Bucharest. I can't even imaging doing some of this in one day because there was so much to see. Our guide, Emil, was great, and it was a small group of 3 of us driving by car. The hotels that were chosen were all very nice with good breakfasts. I especially liked that the hotels were in the central areas and very easy to walk directly into the old towns to eat or explore. Highlights of the tour was Bran Castle, old town Sighisoara, and driving the Transfagarasan Highway and seeing 10 brown bears in the forested roads coming back down from the mountains. I would highly recommend this tour as a relaxing way to see a beautiful area of Romania.

Classic Romania Tour (small group) Tour

Classic Romania Tour (small group)

I had the pleasure of embarking on a 8-day tour of Romania with the esteemed tour company, Rolandia, earlier this year. My husband and I were thrilled to explore the charming regions of Transylvania and Maramures and indulge in the expertise of the Rolandia team. From start to finish, our tour was an exceptional experience that exceeded our expectations. Maramures is a region in Romania that is known for its stunning natural beauty and unique culture. The highlight of our tour was the traditional wooden churches that dot the countryside. These UNESCO World Heritage Sites are an incredible sight to behold, with their intricate carvings and vibrant paintings. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and significance of these churches, and we were left in awe of their beauty. Another unforgettable experience was visiting the Merry Cemetery in the town of Sapanta. This vibrant cemetery is unlike any other in the world, with colorful tombstones that tell the stories of the deceased in a humorous and lighthearted way. Our guide shared with us the fascinating history and traditions behind this unique cemetery, and we were left with a deep appreciation for the customs and culture of Maramures. Throughout our tour, we also had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in local experiences. We visited traditional markets where we sampled delicious local cheeses and meats, and we learned about the traditional crafts of the region, such as woodcarving and weaving. These experiences allowed us to truly connect with the local people and gain a deeper understanding of the culture and way of life in Romania. What really stood out to us was the expertise and passion of the Rolandia team. Our guide was not only incredibly knowledgeable, but also went out of their way to ensure that we had the best possible experience. They took us to off-the-beaten-path locations that we never would have found on our own, and their enthusiasm for the region was infectious. Overall, our tour in Romania with Rolandia was an exceptional experience that we will always treasure. The combination of stunning natural beauty, unique cultural experiences, and expert guidance made for a truly unforgettable trip. We highly recommend this tour company to anyone looking to explore the charming regions of Maramures and Transylvania in Romania.

Balkan´s Route Tour

Balkan´s Route

The trip was great however we were a bit surprised to realize that we were the only 2 English speaking travellers amongst 40 Spanish speaking travellers. We were a bit disappointed as we’d been looking forward to meeting new people. We made due and our tour guide Inigo was amazing and really helpful. The tour itself was great, our only issue was the length of time spent in Romania viewing the smaller towns. We wished we spent more time in other countries/cities that had more to offer. The hotels were amazing, much more than I expected. Overall I would consider booking with Europamundo again but I would definitely brush up on my Spanish before hand.

Great tour with the major sites in Transylvania. The accommodations were elegant for the cost of the tour. Some of them restored historic buildings with painted walls. The food's not bad either. Our guide Andrei took care of us from arrival till departure.

  • Public Transport

Public Transport in Bucharest

Bucharest has romania's most extensive public transport network and is among europe's most significant public transport networks, serving more than 2 million inhabitants. although there were plans to build a canal to the danube during the communist regime, they did not materialize, so the city does not benefit from water transport, except for recreational races on the lakes in the parks., buses & trams.

Bucharest has hundreds of bus and trolleybus routes, and tens of trams, serving every part of the city as well as a number of suburban villages and outposts. Buses and trams run at infrequent intervals from very early in the morning (around 04:30) to around 22:50 (earlier at weekends) , after which the night buses take over. These serve all areas of the capital throughout the night, with all routes departing from Piata Unirii. Most night bus lines run at hourly intervals. In Bucharest, surface transport includes an extensive bus system, trolleybuses, trams, and an easy subway line. The transport network is among the densest in Europe, ensuring the transport of millions of travelers by making them available more than 116 bus lines, 20 trolleybus lines and 25 tram lines, including the light rail. Map the routes of surface public transport can be viewed on the site  www.stbsa.ro/eng/index

Ticket prices

The ticketing is different for the street transport (buses, trams, and trolleybuses) and the subway system. To use buses, trams, or trolleybuses, you must first purchase an ' Activ ' or ' Multiple ' magnetic card (EUR 0.80) from any STB street kiosk, which you then load with credit that is discharged as you enter the transport vehicles. Trips cost EUR 0.60 each, and you can travel for 90 minutes between the lines , and the minimum amount of credit you can buy is EUR 1. Children under seven ride free. One has to validate the card each time one enters the tram or bus. Travelling without a validated card risks a EUR 17 on-the-spot fine. Cards can be topped up as needed at any STB kiosk. More information on ticket prices can be found on the STB website (it also has an English version).

One can plan a route on the STB website or with the help of mobile apps such as Google Maps, Moovit, or Transport Urban.

The subway network also provides passenger transport in Bucharest, among the most used public transport systems. The network consists of five lines: M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5. The system has a 77  km length and 6 3 stations, with an average distance of 1.5 km between stations. The route map can be found on metrorex .ro, subway website, but also explanatory maps are conveniently shown in the subway stations and even in the trains themselves. The use of the subway system in Bucharest is based on a magnetic card, which can be purchased from the subway stations, which entitles either a fixed number of trips over a more extended period or to an unlimited number of trips per one fixed period. Magnetic cards for subway access cannot be used for the journey with the means of public transport to the surface. The passengers' access to the subway stations is between 5.00 and 23.30, and trains with a frequency of 5 to 15 minutes depending on the hours.

Taxis & Ridesharing

Ride-sharing apps like Uber, Bolt, and Yango are well-established in Bucharest and represent a good alternative to taxis. Prices (around  EUR 0.50 per kilometre) are about the same as for standard yellow cabs, while standards are far higher. If you do not have either app on your phone, we recommend you to download at least one, in order to spare yourself running after a normal taxi.

If you have to take a train in Romania, always try to get an InterCity (IC - although note these are few and far between) or InterRegio (IR) as they are the fastest and usually have the most modern rolling stock. Regio (R-) trains (which until recently were known as Personal), are slow and often use much older carriages. You will also see trains designated as ICN: these are InterCity trains that stop at more stations than usual and are more like InterRegios. Prices on all types of trains are relatively cheap. For example, An InterRegio adult single from Bucharest to Brasov currently costs EUR 12 . To buy train tickets, visit either the station, a CFR agency or purchase the tickets online at cfrcalatori.ro. Fairly substantial reductions are available for buying online return tickets well in advance. If you choose to buy tickets online, you need to do so at least 12 hours before the train is due to depart. After that, you will need to purchase them from the station or a CFR ticket agency.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!
