I stayed at Thompson Austin in Austin, Texas, for 2 nights in late April 2024 with my husband. We’d enjoyed our overnight at Thompson Houston about a month earlier, so this was a highly anticipated visit, and we weren’t disappointed. Thompson Austin delivered on our expectations with excellent amenities, including a surprisingly fun fitness center, excellent dining, and a perfect location for exploring Austin’s nightlife.

Read on to see what we liked about Thompson Austin.

I originally booked 1 night at Thompson Austin using The Platinum Card ® from American Express . I made the booking late in 2023 to use up my card’s up to $200 annual prepaid hotel credit with Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts before it expired. That booking was $460.82 with tax but came out to $260.82 after my Amex Platinum card credit.

Thompson Austin booking Amex Fine Hotels Resorts

Booking with AmexTravel.com , I earned 5x Membership Rewards points on my Amex Platinum card and received elite benefits, including noon check-in, 4 p.m. checkout, free breakfast for 2, and a $100 hotel credit. After the room rate, taxes and fees, valet parking, room charges, and credits, I earned 1,752 points for this stay.

As we got closer to our stay, we realized we’d want to stay more than 1 night, especially because we had such a great time at Thompson Houston . We booked another night a few days before our stay.

However, I booked that night directly with Hyatt instead of adding to our original AmexTravel.com booking. We didn’t need breakfast or a late checkout that day and didn’t anticipate spending another $100, so we didn’t need the Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits on the second night. I’d also just gotten The World of Hyatt Credit Card and wanted to start earning points on it.

After taxes and fees, including a $35 destination fee, the rate was almost identical at $460.49 for the second night booked with Hyatt .

Thompson Austin booking Hyatt

With the World of Hyatt card, I earned up to 9x points per dollar spent on the second night (4 Bonus Points per $1 spent on qualified purchases at Hyatt hotels and up to 5 Base Points per $1 from Hyatt as a World of Hyatt member), for a total of 4,144 World of Hyatt points.

Thompson Austin wasn’t able to combine 2 separate bookings, but it was easy enough to manage. We just had to visit the front desk after breakfast, check out, and check back into the same room, switching the credit card on file.

After my $200 Amex Platinum card credit, I paid $720 for 2 nights at Thompson Austin, including free breakfast on the first morning and a $100 experience credit.

Thompson Austin is in downtown Austin on San Jacinto Boulevard between Fifth and Sixth streets. We left our car with the valet the entire time because it was very walkable, and there was so much to do at the hotel and in the area nearby .

A neighborhood highlight was Antone’s Nightclub , a longstanding blues club that was so close we could see it from our seats at Diner Bar within Thompson Austin. We happened to be there right before the Austin Blues Festival , so we saw a great blues show just steps away from the hotel.

We were also only a few minutes away on foot from the bars, clubs, and dining on and around Sixth Street, including Voodoo Doughnut and The Driskill Bar .

Getting There

We drove to Thompson Austin from our home in the Houston area, which only took about 2 hours. If you’re flying in, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is just 7 miles away — about 13 minutes by car — from Thompson Austin.

The hotel’s destination fee offers neighborhood perks and discounts, so check the Thompson Austin website or contact the concierge if you’re looking for things to do.

We checked in around 2 p.m., a little ahead of the hotel’s 4 p.m. check-in time but a little after the noon check-in available with my Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts booking.

The front desk set the style tone we saw throughout the hotel, with dramatic lighting and an interesting rustic wood desk.

We were checked in promptly, though the front desk agent took a few minutes to see if she could get us an upgraded room. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible, but we had a nice room anyway. I appreciated the effort! She also informed us of my benefits from booking the first night with Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts.

Thompson Austin lobby front desk

We were offered sparkling water or water as a welcome refreshment, and we gladly accepted a couple of glasses of bubbles to take up to the room.

Elite Benefits

With the first night booked under Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts, we had a few benefits available to us, which included:

  • Noon check-in, when available
  • Room upgrade upon arrival, when available
  • Daily breakfast for 2 at The Grey Market or with in-room dining (up to $60, including tax and service charge)
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout
  • $100 experience credit

These benefits were detailed in a welcome letter in case we forgot. I got the sense that this hotel is a popular location for Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts stays, as we saw the front desk addressing a stack of these letters. The person checking in next to us was also on an Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts stay, as he got the same welcome information we did.

Thompson Austin welcome letter

Destination Fee Benefits

Thompson Austin charged a $35 daily destination fee, which included the following benefits:

  • Bubbles at check-in
  • Priority access to rooftop pool, cabanas, and day beds
  • Priority reservations at Diner Bar
  • Use of cruiser bikes when available
  • 2 bottles of water per night by request
  • 24-hour fitness center access
  • Local and 1-800 calls
  • Daily local newspaper delivery by request
  • Priority access to the T Box sports simulator room
  • Neighborhood discounts and perks, including access to local museums

The lobby was a lively corridor. Thompson Austin shares a building and amenities with its sister hotel, Tommie Austin , and residential apartments, Sienna at the Thompson.

As we walked in, there was seating to the left with a fireplace. An immediate right turn took us to The Coffee Bar at Tommie, and the front desk was to the right as we walked in further. Diner Bar and The Grey Market were off to the left past the seating, and the elevators were to the right past the front desk and concierge.

The Thompson Austin lobby was much more compact and felt busier than the Thompson Houston lobby, which had a large reading room, soaring ceilings, a skyline view, and huge open spaces.

The concierge desk was in between the dining entrance and the elevators.

The elevators featured lenticular art that changed as we moved in the elevator car.

Thompson Austin’s main amenities were a stylish rooftop pool with an extensive patio and a massive fitness center.

Pool and Patio

The rooftop pool and patio were on the fourth floor, with a nice view within downtown Austin.

Thompson Austin amenities pool

Connected to the Arriba Abajo cantina on the fourth floor, we followed a lush patio maze to reach the pool.

Thompson Austin amenities pool patio

The pool was long but not very wide, with some steps and seating on the side and an open area for lap swimming. It was surrounded by cabanas and loungers. Unfortunately, it was windy and a little too chilly to enjoy the pool during our stay, though there were other swimmers braver than me enjoying the pool!

This pool was appealing despite the chilly water temperature, and I can imagine this fairly small space gets packed on warmer days. The pool is a shared amenity among the Thompson, Tommie, and Sienna.

Thompson Austin pool

A towel station was at the gated pool entrance.

Thompson Austin amenities pool towel stand

Behind the pool, hidden by some patio plants, was a shower for rinsing off before or after a swim. There were also restrooms — some with showers — accessible from the pool deck.

Thompson Austin amenities pool shower

The pool and patio were just as visually appealing at night, with lights in the pool and a view of downtown Austin’s nighttime lights.

Thompson Austin amenities pool night

Fitness Center

The fitness center was far more extensive than I’d expected . At 6,700 square feet, it took up most of the third floor and was shared among the Thompson, Tommie, and Sienna. It was busier than other hotel gyms I’ve visited, with multiple fitness studio rooms, enough equipment to fill a standalone gym, and a sports simulator.

Walking off the elevators, we immediately saw 3 fitness studio rooms. Each room had doors that closed for privacy, a mirrored wall, and some sort of specialized workout equipment unique to the room. The first studio had a smart mirror with training videos.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center studio room with mirror

Additional studios were right next to it with additional equipment.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center studios

Outside of the studio rooms was a station with medicine balls, a trampoline, and a punching bag.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center

The larger fitness floor had more equipment than I’d ever seen in a hotel fitness center.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center cardio

There were numerous weight machines in addition to the cardio equipment.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center weight machines

The fitness center also featured numerous weight racks.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center free weights

There was an entire room room for Peloton bikes — I counted 6.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center Peloton room

Another mirrored room featured fitness bands, rollers, kettlebells, balance balls, and more.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center rollers and balls

The most incredible feature of the fitness center was the T Box, a sports simulator suite, which was complimentary like the rest of the fitness center. The suite featured everything we needed to play golf and other games, including the screen and setup computer, sports equipment, tables, a bar, and a couch for lounging in between turns.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center golf simulator

The simulator had numerous games available, ranging from golf to basketball and zombie dodgeball. It was a lot of fun, and we tried a few games. The zombies won, though.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center golf simulator zombies

This suite featured a large couch, comfy chair, bar, and shuffleboard table. It would be a great spot for groups. One of the tables had an in-room dining menu, so we could order food to the suite.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center golf simulator

We had so much fun playing with the sports simulator, but it was less private than I’d hoped . I didn’t mind that it was within a glass room facing the fitness center, but we had numerous interruptions. We’d asked at the front desk about reserving a time and were told that the room is first come, first served. When we found it open after giving up on the too-chilly pool, we started playing.

It wasn’t long before someone else walked in, then walked back out after noticing we were in there — and then started doing laps around the fitness center, hovering to see when we’d leave. The hotel’s building has a residential area that shares amenities with the hotel, so multiple residential sales tours popped in while we played.

While it was nice to be able to use the room whenever it was open, I would have appreciated an uninterrupted reservation time , even if it required a deposit or a nominal fee. It would have been nice to have had a clearly defined period when the room was available to us and when it was time to leave. Still, we enjoyed the simulator and got a nice workout.

Just beyond the T Box was a lounge area with a long circular couch and TV.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center seating

Behind that was a huge studio room that would be good for group classes or a workout with friends.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center group studio

Around the corner was a snack machine and emergency equipment: a fire extinguisher and defibrillator.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center snack machine and defibrillator

On the opposite side of the fitness center floor were the elevators, with an ATM nearby.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center elevators and ATM

There was also a stack of water cups and towel station near the entrance — though we had to go near the restrooms to get water.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center water

The fitness center restrooms featured a changing room and a shower with towels, shampoo, conditioner, and soap.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center bathroom with shower and changing

The shower stall was accessible with a fold-down seat and grab bars.

Thompson Austin amenities fitness center shower

Event Space

The second floor featured meeting rooms and a ballroom.

Thompson Austin ballrooms

Another event space was on the fourth floor. It had floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that looked out on the street below and the patio with a bar.

Thompson Austin event space

Pet Friendly

Thompson Austin is pet-friendly for up to 2 pets. There’s no pet fee , though you need to sign a pet agreement at check-in. Dog treats are available at The Coffee Bar at Tommie near the front door.

Valet parking was the only parking option, available for $59 per night at the hotel entrance. We just pulled up to the lane in front of the hotel for valet.

Thompson Austin amenities parking valet entrance

We had a 1 King Bed suite on the seventh floor. When we got off the elevators, we followed signs to the Thompson side — the opposite side had Tommie Austin rooms, which are a bit smaller and less well-appointed.

A dramatically lit white hallway led us to the room.

Thompson Austin guesroom hallway

Our room was compact at 324 square feet but well-furnished , with deep grays and green tones throughout.

Thompson Austin room

As we walked in, the bathroom was behind a sliding door on the left, and a closet and mirror were to the right. Beyond that was a luggage stool, dresser and desk, the bed, lounger, and a tall window with a view.

Thompson Austin room bathroom entrance

The king-sized bed featured luxury Italian SFERRA linens, which were cool and comfortable.

Thompson Austin room bedroom king bed

The bed had a rustic green leather headboard on a brass frame and was surrounded by gray curved walls, making this space feel cozy. The vertical lights next to the bed were dimmable and easily controlled by a round knob.

Thompson Austin room bedroom bed lighting

A reading light was embedded on either side of the headboard. They could be easily turned on or off by pulling the light out or pushing it flush with the headboard.

Thompson Austin room bedroom headboard light

The left side of the bed featured a stone-and-metal nightstand with 2 drawers.

Thompson Austin room bedroom nightstand

The drawers were deep, offering plenty of bedside storage.

Thompson Austin room nightstand

The right side of the bed had a pair of tables, marble and glass, with a Tivoli Audio radio on top.

Thompson Austin room bedroom right nightstand

Both nightstands featured outlets with 2 regular power outlets and 2 USB outlets.

Thompson Austin room bedroom right nightstand outlets

Across from the bed was the dresser, which doubled as a minibar, desk, and large leather luggage rack.

Thompson Austin room bedroom luggage stool

The dresser had angular drawers and cabinets.

Thompson Austin room bedroom dresser and minibar

Atop the dresser was part of the minibar, featuring snacks and drinks for purchase. Almost everything in the minibar was local to Austin, from the nuts to the vodka. The earplugs were complimentary. Notably, there was not an ice machine on the guest floors or an ice bucket in the room. Rather, a note on the minibar instructed us to call for ice delivery.

Thompson Austin room mini bar

The minibar fridge, which had cold canned and bottled drinks, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic, was within the dresser. Storage was available to the left of it.

Thompson Austin room bedroom minibar fridge

The dresser featured a large drawer under the minibar tray.

Thompson Austin room bedroom dresser drawer

Under that drawer was the safe, which was large enough for a laptop.

Thompson Austin room bedroom dresser safe

Also on the dresser was the Nespresso machine with a few pods, sugars, and bottled water. I didn’t notice any creamer available.

Thompson Austin room Nespresso coffee and water

Above that was the wall-mounted 55-inch TV, which offered live TV and Chromecast.

Thompson Austin room dresser TV

The desk featured a rustic brown leather desk chair, oval mirror, desk lamp, and outlet.

Thompson Austin room bedroom desk and mirror

Like the other outlets in the room, this desk outlet featured 2 regular power outlets and a couple of USB outlets.

Thompson Austin room bedroom desk lamp and outlets

A note on the desk provided us with a QR code we could use to get information about the hotel and its amenities.

Thompson Austin room welcome QR on desk

A lounger with a couple of small tables was in front of the window, where we could sit for a view of downtown.

Thompson Austin room bedroom lounger and table

The view looked out over rooftops nearby and offered a glimpse of Sixth Street. I spotted Voodoo Doughnut and a familiar sight: The Driskill , another Hyatt hotel I’d visited in Austin.

Thompson Austin room the view with Driskill

Back at the entrance, there was a closet and a mirror. I liked that the mirror had a small shelf attached where we could set items as we got ready.

Thompson Austin room entrance closet and mirror

Inside the closet was a hanging rack with hangers, a robe, a steamer, a boot puller, and a couple of shoe-sized drawers. I was a little disappointed to see only 1 robe in this room, as we’d enjoyed having 2 robes available at Thompson Houston.

Thompson Austin room closet

The top drawer contained 2 pairs of Thompson slippers inside cover bags.

Thompson Austin room closet slippers

A unusual feature of the room was the concrete ceiling. We didn’t hear a peep from upstairs — though we did hear normal hotel noises on our floor. The concrete ceiling also meant there was no overhead lighting — just lamp lighting from the lamps next to the bed and on the desk.

Thompson Austin room concrete ceiling

The bathroom was dark and dramatic, with mostly black and white tile and furnishings with touches of gold. It was a little too dark for my taste, but it was functional nonetheless.

Thompson Austin room bathroom

The concrete vanity featured a large sink and a mirror with lights on either side. The large mirror appeared to have a button in the middle, but it didn’t seem to do anything. There was an additional magnified makeup mirror that we could plug in.

Thompson Austin room bathroom sink

Underneath were more bathroom supplies: towels, tissue paper, and a hair dryer.

Thompson Austin room bathroom under sink

Above the sink were gold-toned amenity containers and Bowmakers lotion.

Thompson Austin room bathroom amenities

The containers contained a vanity kit with cotton swabs, a shower cap, and 2 makeup remover towelettes.

Thompson Austin room bathroom sink amenities

The walk-in shower was large and had a rainfall showerhead, its own light, and a few shelves. The showerhead had what looked like eucalyptus leaves hanging from it, but I suspect these were fake or old because I didn’t get any eucalyptus scent from it.

Thompson Austin room bathroom shower

There was no door to the shower, which I didn’t like. I prefer to be able to close a shower door to keep the heat and steam in the shower.

Thompson Austin room bedroom shower

One of the shelves had Bowmakers amenities on it — shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel in reusable bottles. We had trouble getting a couple of these pumps to work, so we removed them to get to the product.

Thompson Austin room bathroom shower amenities

The toilet was behind a short enclosure. Like the shower, it didn’t have a door to separate it from the rest of the bathroom. It had separate flush buttons on the wall.

Thompson Austin room bathroom toilet

Thompson Austin had numerous dining options: in-room dining, Diner Bar, The Grey Market, Arriba Abajo, and The Coffee Bar at Tommie . Any time we visit Austin, we have a very busy eating schedule, as there are more places we want to eat than we have room in our bellies for. However, we gladly prioritized visits to a couple of the hotel’s restaurants led by James Beard award-winning chef Mashama Bailey and managing partner Johno Morisano.

Thompson Austin food and beverage dining entrance

One of the lobby-adjacent dining options, Diner Bar , is open for dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. daily , with the bar opening slightly earlier at 4 p.m. each day. There’s a happy hour featuring oysters and martinis each day starting at 4 p.m., which goes until 6 p.m., except on Sundays and Mondays, when it goes to 10 p.m.

Thompson Austin food and beverage Diner Bar

The Diner Bar menu of “port city Southern cuisine” features a raw bar, charcuterie, snacks including lobster sliders and turnip cakes, and mains including swordfish frites and curry chicken.

Eager to try out the oyster and martini happy hour, we headed straight to Diner Bar after we got settled into our room. It was better than I’d expected.

Thompson Austin food and beverage Diner Bar menu

The house martinis were $10. We got a couple of dirty gin martinis served in delicately etched glasses with extra olives.

Thompson Austin food and beverage Diner Bar martini and oyster happy hour

The oysters — $2 each during happy hour — were exceptional. Prepared at the raw bar right in front of us, we had our choice of 4 oyster varieties from Massachusetts and New Brunswick. The bartender suggested 2 of each to start so we could try all of them, which we did.

The oysters were served with horseradish, lemon, vinegar, and cocktail sauce. We enjoyed all of them, ordered more, and came back to do the exact same thing again the next day!

Thompson Austin food and beverage Diner Bar oysters

Each day, we ordered a snack on the side to give our martinis something more substantial than oysters to land on. The first day, we got fried ugali, a firm cornmeal cake on top of chipotle salsa.

Thompson Austin food and beverage Diner Bar fried ugali

On the second day, we had potato wedges, which were essentially huge fries with a generous portion of sour cream on top that hit the spot.

Thompson Austin food and beverage Diner Bar potato wedges

The Grey Market

The Grey Market is another dining option next to the lobby. It’s open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features a grab-and-go market and elevated diner breakfast and lunch options.

The grab-and-go market was at the entrance, featuring snack shelves and refrigerators with bottled and canned drinks and prepared foods, including sandwiches and fruit. There was a walk-up coffee bar, too.

Thompson Austin food and beverage The Grey Market entrance

On our first morning at the hotel, we dined in for breakfast since we had an up to $60 credit for breakfast.

Thompson Austin food and beverage The Grey Market dining area

Breakfast at The Grey Market featured diner classics, including pancakes, eggs, and bacon, a breakfast sandwich, grits, and an omelet . Additional selections included quiche chilaquiles, a granola bowl with yogurt, steel-cut oatmeal, and guac on toast.

Thompson Austin food and beverage The Grey Market breakfast menu

The guac on toast was very tempting, but I couldn’t pass up the quiche chilaquiles. This crustless quiche was satisfying with a little heat. I liked it, though there was some extra liquid inside the large ramekin.

Thompson Austin food and beverage The Grey Market quiche

I also got a side of seasonal fruit, which came with orange slices, grapefruit, and pineapple. These were flavorful and refreshing.

My husband got the NYC breakfast sandwich featuring bacon, egg, and cheese on a roll.

Arriba Abajo

Arriba Abajo is the fourth-floor cantina adjacent to Thompson Austin’s rooftop pool. It offers seated dining and poolside drinks and food. This bar and restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Thompson Austin food and beverage Arriba Abajo entrance

We ran out of time to visit this lively patio cantina, but had a chance to walk through as we visited the pool.

Thompson Austin food and beverage Arriba Abajo bar

There was a DJ in the main dining area.

Inside the restaurant is a dark mezcaleria with a tasting bar. This room is available for private mezcal tastings.

Outside, Arriba Abajo has a patio bar under a cover near the pool.

Thompson Austin food and beverage Arriba Abajo pool bar

We wanted to try some poolside dining by Arriba Abajo but decided against it after realizing the pool was too cold to stay. The poolside drink menu featured beer, wine, and cocktails, including margaritas and frozen fruit martinis, zero-proof cocktails, and shareable large-format drinks.

Thompson Austin food and beverage poolside menu

The poolside dining menu was equally tempting, with lobster quesadilla pizza, carne asada tortas, salads, and an assortment of tacos.

The Coffee Bar at Tommie

Right at the front entrance of the hotel, The Coffee Bar at Tommie is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Thompson Austin food and beverage The Coffee Bar at Tommie

It features coffee, beer, wines, and bites for breakfast and lunch, including breakfast tacos, bagels, a salad, a sandwich, flatbread, and a wrap. There are gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and vegetarian options.

This bar has treats for dogs, too, with a treat jar and water bowl near the entrance.

In-Room Dining

An in-room dining menu was on the desk in our room. It featured breakfast and lunch from The Grey Market and dinner from Diner Bar. Breakfast was available from 7 to 11 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Thompson Austin food and beverage in room dining menu

Dinner from Diner Bar was available from 4 to 10 p.m. — though I recommend heading downstairs for the martini and oyster happy hour in the bar.

Thompson Austin food and beverage in room dining from Diner Bar

We had great service at Thompson Austin. From the front desk handling our unusual booking to the servers at Diner Bar and The Grey Market, we felt well taken care of. We were greeted kindly at the front desk and sent up to our room with complimentary sparkling wine. As we explored the hotel, the staff members were always happy to answer questions and offer assistance, like the bartenders in the mezcaleria who excitedly told us about the private mezcal tastings available, and the servers at Diner Bar who helped us pick out the perfect oysters.

Our stay at Thompson Austin was fantastic. We had a well-appointed room, an excellent location just off Austin’s Sixth Street, friendly staff, and tasty bites. Although the pool was too chilly to enjoy, I was thoroughly impressed by the dining and surprised by the extensive fitness center, including a golf simulator. I’m already dreaming of a return trip. Next time, we might opt for a less costly visit to the sister hotel in the same building, Tommie Austin, which shares Thompson Austin’s amenities.

The Thompson’s Third Texas Offering Introduces Two Hotels in One — Exploring the Thompson and tommie Austin

Wonderful restaurants, an impressive wellness center, and more perks that make this unique downtown concept stand out.

Thompson Austin is the newest location for the Hyatt boutique hotel brand in Texas. (Photo by Chase Daniels)

In the summer of 2022, we paid a visit to the newly opened Thompson Austin, the hotel brand’s third foray into Texas (following Dallas and San Antonio ) and the first to introduce a two-hotels-in-one concept with the addition of tommie.

T ucked right between 5th and 6th Streets, the new Thompson Austin hotel opened this past January in the heart of the city’s downtown. The mixed-use build (designed by bKL Architecture ) is a sleek addition to downtown Austin’s skyline, featuring 212 luxurious guestrooms and suites designed by KTGY Simeone Deary Design Group , along with 17 residences, a 6,700-square-foot wellness center, a rooftop pool deck, two restaurants, and private event space.

And though this is the third Texas offering from the Thompson brand, there is one major distinction: the addition of tommie.

Los Angeles may be home to the first tommie, a boutique hotel offshoot of the Thompson brand geared at younger travelers, but Austin is the first instance of a combined Thompson and tommie experience.

Note: We spent our weekend at the Thompson Austin, so we’ll have a little more detail about that side of the unique hotel.

At a Glance: The Thompson versus tommie

With entrances right next to one another on San Jacinto Boulevard, the Thompson Austin and tommie Austin blend together until you head to your room. The two share hotel amenities, like the state-of-the-art gym and the rooftop pool and gardens, as well as the four dining options.

The idea of tommie was to create a more casual experience for a traveler who doesn’t spend as much time in their room but could still access the more luxurious aspects the Thompson offers. The slightly less expensive guestrooms are smaller in size but still offer a cool, minimalist design by Venice-based Studio Collective .

The Thompson Austin Guestrooms

Luxury meets hipster at the new Thompson Austin, especially when it comes to the guest room design. A few focal points in the King City View room include dark green leather headboards, concrete ceilings, and views that double as works of art. Our room faced directly out towards 6th Street with the historic Driskell hotel perfectly in view. I was a little worried when I saw that complimentary ear plugs were provided with a note about the infamously noisy street, but we didn’t hear a thing all night.

The Little Things

Slick hotel bathrooms feature black toilets, black-and-white speckled tile, gold accents, and D.S. & DURGA products (including the Thompson Hotel’s signature brand scent). Each room comes stocked with a couple of cozy, hoodie robes and slippers to borrow as well.

Rooms also include Nespresso coffee makers and a bar stocked with Texas-sourced snacks and Tito’s (of course).

Thompson Austin

The Rooftop Pool

Situated on the fourth floor, the rooftop pool deck at Thompson Austin is stunning. It includes Wax Myrtle’s Club, where you can easily grab bites or a cocktail to sip by the pool. There are several lounge chairs (first-come, first-serve) but you can also reserve a cabana.

The Fitness Center

The 6,700-square-foot wellness center includes treadmills, ellipticals, climbers, Peloton bikes, a weightlifting area, a squat rack, and so much more. There are also private rooms that can be used for TRX training and HIIT workouts, a spin class room, yoga and dance class room, and sports simulator room. What else could you need?

Dining at Thompson Austin

Wax myrtle’s.

My favorite part of our stay was a dinner at Wax Myrtle’s. The Mediterranean restaurant just came out with a new menu and it’s exceptional. First, start with the heirloom tomato burrata and warm truffled feta. The feta is topped with pistachios giving it a creamy and crunchy balance. Next, don’t miss the sweet potato fries, they’re not the usual. These are thin wedges of sweet potato with jalapeno yogurt, barbecue oil, za’atar, and cilantro. And lastly, whether sharing or not, the Hide-A-Way Cheeseburger is perfect for either. It’s wagyu beef topped with melted white cheese, pickles, Golden sauce, and chopped red onion.

As for cocktails, you can’t go wrong with BDAY — a mezcal-based drink with Cappelletti, Strega, lime, grapefruit soda, and a Gentian aperitif. Or if you’re more of a whiskey lover, the Day Trip is a strawberry sweet favorite.

Thompson Austin

Founded by John O. Morisano and James Beard Award-winning chef Mashama Bailey (Savannah’s The Grey), this Southern fine dining restaurant at Thompson Austin is led by chef de cuisine Kristine Kittrell. Located on the ground floor of the hotel, Diner Bar is the sister restaurant of The Grey.

Make sure to start with the Eleven Twenty-Five cocktail. It’s a white rum-based drink with cognac, cinnamon, and lime. For appetizers, don’t miss the foie and grits — duck liver sits atop a plate of grits, served with strawberry mostarda and onion gravy, offering a perfect mix of sweet and salty. The lamb crepinette is another favorite with mashed potatoes and brasied greens. The menu also offers fresh oysters and a chicken fried quail that looked delicious.

The Grey Market

Around the corner from Diner Bar, The Grey Market (also founded by Morisano and chef Bailey) features grab-and-go bites and an all day menu of Southern favorites. If you’re dining in, you can expect breakfast dishes, The Grey Market burger, fried chicken sandwiches, salads, soups, and more. A few ready-to-go sandwiches, salads, and spreads (pimento cheese, whipped ricotta, hummus) are also available to purchase and bring to your room or office. Local draft beer and wine are also available.

Thompson Austin

The Coffee Bar at tommie

In the need of a quick caffeine fix or a good place to hang out? The hotel also houses an all-day coffee shop and bar designed to evoke the warmth of West Texas. The menu features coffee from Dripping Springs’ Greater Goods Coffee Co. There’s a communal table, bar seating, and spots by the fireplace to chill or work while sipping a latte or local craft beer.

In addition to all of these perks inside of the hotel, Thompson is in walking distance of so many Austin favorites. The Paramount Theatre, Antone’s Nightclub, and of course, 6th Street are all a short walk away. Also, don’t forget to grab a donut from Voodoo Doughnut any time of day.

The Thompson Austin Has Finally Arrived—and It’s Sexy AF

From a breezy rooftop pool to sleek guestrooms and award-winning southern cuisine..

bKL Architecture

After two long years of this “new normal,” we’ve finally come to terms with the fact that nothing’s for certain anymore—especially when it comes to opening dates. The Thompson Austin was one of the many businesses caught up in the tug of stop and go. Slated to welcome guests at various points throughout 2021, the upmarket hotel complex was pummeled by a cluster of unforeseeable circumstances, from COVID-fueled supply chain backlogs to unprecedented ice storms.

“It’s been a unique time for business owners—we’ve never had so many things pile up on us at one time before,” says Thompson Austin managing director Nate Hardesty. “I’ve spent 20 years falling in love with hospitality and creating experiences for people to remember. Nothing against construction, but now that we’re open, I can finally say I’m home again.”

The debut, however, was gradual. In January 2022, the hotel unveiled 212 guestrooms and suites, alongside a plethora of coveted amenities. The following month, it was joined by Wax Myrtle’s , the poolside rooftop bar and restaurant backed by Chicago-based Land and Sea Dept. This latest stage in development brings the hotly anticipated addition of The Grey Market , helmed by beloved James Beard Award-winning chef Mashama Bailey and partner Johno Morisano, as well as The Diner Bar , a relaxed fine dining restaurant, to the ever-growing establishment. We happened to be one of the first to get a good look at this multifaceted work-in-progress—here’s everything you need to know about The Thompson Austin’s illustrious arrival.

The hotel has a little sibling in tow

Well, kinda. While the Thompson and tommie Austin are joined side-by-side, they’re considered separate entities and were built with different customer bases in mind. “tommie Austin is built for the spirited adventurer, the traveler that doesn’t care to spend a ton of time luxuriating around their room, but is more focused on social interactions and discovering unknown parts of Austin,” Hardesty explains. “Thompson Austin appeals to a traveler that is very specific in their needs—those that appreciate impressive architectural and design elements, onsite culinary offerings and luxury amenities.” As such, tommie Austin sports smaller, more minimalist rooms, stocked with all of the essentials and none of the fuss.

Thompson Austin

The overall aesthetic is hipster-meets-modern with a thick layer of luxe

Noir-chic with patterned textures, industrial ceilings, and a touch of Texan twang, the Thompson’s rooms come equipped with all the latest in tech. We’re talking ultra-fast smart TVs, sleek little espresso machines, and light sensors. The deep dark hues are contrasted with ample natural light, flowing in from floor-to-ceiling windows with sweeping city views. Bathrooms are compact with eco-friendly containers of DS & Durga, and the closets are loaded with soft gray hooded robes and fluffy black slides for the ultimate cozy vibe.

Thompson Austin

Naturally, there’s a huge outdoor pool

And that’s not all—remember, everything’s bigger in Texas. The hotel’s 6,700-square-foot wellness center features a sports simulator programmed for golf, baseball, race car driving, and zombie dodgeball, private fitness rooms, and a fourth-floor pool deck surrounded by desert greens, cabanas, and al fresco dining just waiting for the party to start. “Austinites love a good time, and we were just getting back to that when Omicron hit us hard a few months ago,” adds Hardesty. “Pent-up demand for fun remains strong, and we look forward to providing some of that to our guests in 2022.”

The hotel’s culinary trifecta has you covered morning, noon, and night

Seasoned restaurateurs Mashama Bailey and Johno Maorisano bring Savannah flare to Austin by way of The Grey Market, serving as a community hangout with counter-service, grab-and-go items, and big plates of Sunday Fried Chicken accompanied by Pullman bread and bread and butter pickles. "Our menu for the markets in Austin and Savannah are very similar by design,” says Mashama. “We want them to have the same feeling, and the plan is that the spaces and food reflect that perspective.”

Wax Myrtle's

“For the Diner Bar, we’re excited to expand on our brand of Port City Southern Food by exploring the seasonal bounties Texas has to offer,” the celebrated chef continues, shifting her focus to the more refined, sit-down project onsite. “That ranges from produce like the beautiful peppers we see here as well as seafood from the Gulf . We're also adding subtle elements of smoke in our fish and some of our vegetables to remind you of eating barbecue ."

Wax Myrtle's

Our tip? Hit up Wax Myrtle’s and get your hands on the big ol’ Beef Rib, doused with French onion gravy and roasted green onions. It’s by far the best bone in town.

Thompson Austin

tommie’s on hand to keep you caffeinated

Guests staying at the Thompson need only to walk through the passageway behind the lobby to discover tommie’s buzzing coffee shop next door. Grab a seat at the bar to sample blends from Greater Goods Coffee Co., a local small-batch roastery that gives back to the community, alongside a choice pastry. Later, kick back on a plush sofa by the fireplace with a glass of wine at happy hour . This spot’s as versatile as it is inviting.

Can’t get enough of the hotel? Go ahead and move in

The Thompson Austin boasts 17 long-term residences on the 16th floor , each armed with a kitchen, washer and dryer, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and sleek furnishings a la Thompson, plus access to all the hotel’s many amenities. “The location here on 5th and Brazos street can’t be beaten,” says Austin real estate professional Maria Francesca Repucci . “You’re steps from nightlife and top restaurants yet just a few blocks from the Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake. The heartbeat of downtown couldn’t be more palpable with protected corridor views of the Texas Capital and longtime favorite music venues a stone's throw away.”

The Thompson Austin and tommie Austin are both open for reservations via hyatt.com . Wax Myrtle’s is open daily from 2pm to 11 pm (reserve via Resy ). The Grey Market is open for walk-ins daily from 7 am to 7 pm. The Diner Bar is open for walk-ins daily for breakfast (7: 30 am to 10:30 am), happy hour (4 pm to 6 pm), and dinner (5 pm to 9 pm). The Coffee Bar at tommie is open for walk-ins daily from 6 am to 10 pm.

Matador Original Series

This hotel delivers culinary excellence in the heart of austin, texas.

E ast and North Austin are well-known hotspots for food lovers, but one hotel is reestablishing the city’s downtown as a culinary destination: Thompson Austin . The hotel offers a variety of dining options, from Diner Bar, a dinner spot with a Southern menu crafted by two-time James Beard Award-winning chef Mashama Bailey, to the newly opened rooftop cantina, Arriba Abajo, which serves Mexican-inspired fare with a scenic view of the city.

But Thompson Austin excels at more than just its culinary offerings. An Austin resident, I recently staycationed in one of the hotel’s Upper Stories suites, a luxurious yet homey oasis amid the hustle and bustle of the city center. Whether you’re passing through town or planning to stay for a while, that kind of comfort and convenience is hard to beat in downtown Austin.

Livable suites for families and longer stays

thompson-austin

Photo: Chase Daniels

Opened in January 2022, Thompson Austin has 229 rooms, 14 suites, and 17 Upper Stories suites, along with a 6,700 square-foot fitness center. There are rooms to suit every type of traveler, but the Upper Stories rooms were a standout. Located on the 16th floor, these fully livable suites come equipped with smart TVs, a living room, and a walk-in shower with rainfall showerheads, making it perfect for families, extended stays, or couples on a romantic getaway.

To my surprise, the Upper Stories suites also come with fully functional kitchens. In my one-bedroom suite, I found everything I needed to cook a full meal: a stove, cooking utensils, a full-size fridge, and a mini dishwasher. The kitchen connects to an open-concept living room with floor-to-ceiling windows, offering cityscape views. The suite made me feel as at home in the city as I do in my actual home in Austin. This was especially true at night — cloud-like pillows, lush bedding, and a plush rug fostered coziness in the bedroom, allowing me to fall asleep within minutes of hitting the bed.

A hotel designed for great meals

thompson-austin

Photo: Jasmin Porter

As someone who dines out frequently, I was amazed by the number of on-site restaurants at Thompson Austin, and the amount of variety they collectively offered. The hotel has a total of four restaurants and bars. On the evening my partner and I arrived, we checked in at Diner Bar, the hotel’s Southern seafood restaurant helmed by the esteemed chef Mashama Bailey.

We started the night with house-made cocktails: Last Flowers (made with gin, creme de violet, lemon, and egg whites) and Big Gold Mine (a blended scotch cocktail with coconut milk, orgeat, lime, and yellow chartreuse). Then came the appetizers: Glacier Bay, Island Pearl, and Village Bay oysters; Alaskan crab with green goddess sauce; and buttery lobster sliders.

Photo: Thompson Austin

A New York strip steak and swordfish frites were plattered up as main courses, both seared to perfection and accompanied with potato wedges topped with sour cream, as well as sharp cheddar mac and cheese. We finished the night with a toasted pistachio affogato and Thompson’s quintessential dessert: a flourless chocolate cake with peanut butter mousse, spiced peanuts, and peanut butter ice cream. A creation of Chef Bailey’s known as the Benne Bar, the indulgent treat is reminiscent of Reese’s peanut butter cups — but in cake form.

The following day, I didn’t have the chance to get breakfast at Grey Market, located on the hotel’s first floor, or Tommie, Thompson Austin’s neighboring sister hotel, which caters to spirited and adventurous travelers. But both offer a relaxed environment to grab classic bites like coffee, granola bowls, pancakes, and guacamole toast.

A new rooftop bar in Austin

thompson-austin

Thompson Austin’s newly debuted rooftop cantina, Arriba Abajo, opened last month. Named after one of Mexico’s celebratory cheers, Arriba Abajo is perched on the fourth floor and outfitted in lush foliage, fringe lampshades, and rattan furniture, making guests feel like they’ve been transported to Tulum. What impressed me was the restaurant’s layout. From the elevator, I was greeted by the open-air patio, which features views of the pool, the outdoor bar, and the skyline.

Inspired by Mexico’s rich and flavor-filled cuisine, Arriba Abajo’s menu includes dishes like shrimp ceviche, heirloom corn chips, chicken milanesa tortas, and carnitas tacos, paying homage to the flavors found in Oaxaca, Yucatán, and the regions in between. My personal favorites were the chorizo-infused queso and the al pastor tacos enveloped in house-made tortillas. The drink menu didn’t miss either, offering mango margaritas, micheladas, wines, and a selection of draft beers, some of which are brewed in Austin.

Created for functionality with contactless check-in kiosks and mobile room entry, the hotel welcomes guests with a youthful all-day counter serving specialty coffee drinks from Greater Goods Coffee Co., craft beer, natural wines and playful retail, as an innovative alternative to the traditional lobby.

Evoking the boundless charm of the vast high-desert ranges from its West Texas surroundings, tommie Austin’s guestrooms embody details reminiscent of natural elements including comfortable, tactile furnishings, southwestern American-inspired materials and textures combined with bold, ethnic geometric patterns. Guests encounter six dramatic panoramic images situated above each bed shot by the celebrated local photographer, Kenny Braun, featuring images from the Guadalupe Mountain Range to Big Bend Ranch State Park. Upon entry, guests are greeted by a 10-by-6-foot mural specially curated by Tom Jean Webb that shares a narrative influenced by the southwest and its surroundings. Created to allude a transformative atmosphere and visual experience, the mural possesses an emotional element intended to spark conversation and engagement among tommie guests and visitors alike.

Opening in a cadence throughout early 2022, Thompson Austin and tommie Austin will together offer several unique dining concepts including a fourth-floor restaurant and bar concept, street-level restaurant and market and a ground-floor coffee shop and wine bar.

From the minds of Grey Spaces partners Mashama Bailey, the 2019 James Beard Best Chef: Southeast, and Johno Morisano, The Diner Bar and The Grey Market will anchor both hotels as day-to-night dining destinations serving daily fare on the ground level. Each will play off of the duo’s take on Port City Southern food while incorporating additional inspiration from regional ingredients and local Texan flavors. Located within the lobby of Thompson Austin, the Diner Bar will be a casual, fine-dining restaurant and bar with a lively, convivial spirit serving dishes such as Country Pasta, while The Grey Market takes inspiration from its original Savannah location as a community gathering place with counter-service, grab-and-go items and provisions such as a Sunday Fried Chicken set with Pullman bread and homemade pickles.

On the fourth-floor entertainment deck, Land and Sea Dept will debut Wax Myrtle’s Club & Pool , a signature poolside restaurant and bar offering modern al fresco cuisine. Led by executive chef Nick Erven, Thompson Austin and tommie Austin guests can expect a menu prioritizing seasonal and regional ingredients focusing on contemporary American dishes in addition to monthly programming such as local and visiting DJs, screenings and live performances. Dish highlights include a Black-Eyed Pea Falafel with pickled tomatillo and buttermilk and Griddled Gulf Shrimp with bone marrow-chili butter and sesame seeds. A menu of innovative libations created by consultant Shelby Allison and led by Wax Myrtle’s beverage director Ben Carrington complements each dish with curated originals and reinvigorated classics. Highlights include the Happy House with sotol, blanco tequila, spiced grapefruit cordial, lime and sparkling wine, and the Moontower with gin, vermouth, herbed honey oxymel, lemon oil and local olives.

Replacing a traditional hotel lobby, guests of tommie Austin will encounter an all-day coffee shop featuring Austin-based Greater Goods Coffee Co. , a small-batch coffee roaster aiming to source, roast and serve quality specialty coffee with a focus on creativity and community. Doubling as a casual wine bar and go-to happy hour spot, guests can also enjoy a curated menu of local, premium and natural wines that celebrate the region; craft beer from Austin breweries; and a collection of playful retail to shop through.
