A Perfect “Fairytale” Minnesota Road Trip with Fall Colors
- Share on Facebook
Let's plan a trip to check out the Fall colors and more! Here is a great idea if you want to do a road trip around Minnesota
There is a very scenic drive that you can take through Minnesota that takes you to some "fairytale" like places throughout Central to Southeastern Minnesota. It's also a great way to see the Fall colors as they are starting to pop around the state.
This trip begins in St. Cloud. Quarry Park is the first stop, or beginning point, so actually it begins in Waite Park. From there you will drive to Munsinger/Clemens Gardens . These are both places that seem pretty magical. Fairytale-like. Great places to take pictures. I've seen so many people take their graduation, engagement, wedding, family, etc pictures in both of these spots. Or, if you just want some really picturesque scenes to frame - both of these places have those opportunities.
Next up, according to Only in Your State, you will make the drive to the Twin Cities area. There you can make the stop at the magical place Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden & Bird Sanctuary. They stay open through October 15th and weekends only through the end of October.
The garden is home to more than 600 plant species and 130 bird species, and receives 40,000-60,000 visitors each year.
From there you will drive to the Normandale Japanese Garden . That just looks super cool, and something unexpected in Minnesota. This is located on the Normandale Community College campus.
Then head to the Cannon River in Welch. Welch is also where Treasure Island Casino is located, so after taking in the scenic area by the river, you could try your luck at the Casino. You should really book this trip out for a weekend to allow for time to do extra things.
Next stop is Lake Pepin in Lake City. This is the largest lake on the Mississippi and is a great place to hang out for the day and kayak, or some other water activity before it gets too cold.
After that, head to Winona to the Great River Bluffs state park. And it is just as the name suggests. Great trail walking, hiking, and photo opportunities.
And finally end up at Mystery Cave in Preston, Minnesota. This is the only reason I have heard of Preston is because of this cave. I love going through these caves throughout the United States. This one is cool because it's interesting, and you don't have to drive too far to see it. At least you are still in the state of Minnesota... you will be on the border of Iowa, but still in MN.

If you cannot make it there, Glenwood Springs offers endless exploration opportunities.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison
One must-see stop on this part of the trip is the Painted Wall, which is best at sunset. It is worth making this an overnight stay, as it is labeled a dark sky reserve, meaning you can see the stars clearly.

Picton to St Arnaud – 128km, 1.5 hours
Stop over at the alpine village of St Arnaud where Lake Rotoiti, encircled by bush-covered mountains, is idyllic. Water taxi from Kerr Bay across its 7.5km length to Lakehead and return on the flat Lakehead Track. Black-trunked beech trees and verdant ferns provide shade with continuous lake views and shingle beaches to enjoy.
For panoramas over St Arnaud, Lake Rotoiti and forever green ranges, climb St Arnaud Range Track through beech forest to Parachute Rocks, at 1400m. A heart-pounding, steep, rocky trail to the 1650m range rewards with a scenic plateau dotted with small lakes and jutting, zigzagging ranges beyond.
St Arnaud to Ross – 350km, 4.5 hours
Heading for Ross, we detour to Hokitika Gorge . Viewed from a flat trail, flowing between narrow, greyish-white rock banks, Hokitika River’s turquoise hue is astonishing.
Tiny Ross began the West Coast’s gold-mining journey. Through bush and about town, the Water Race Walkway encompasses buildings and mining relics from the 1860s gold rush days.
West Coast Wilderness Trail – 4 days
Drive from Ross to Hokitika (29km, 22 minutes) and shuttle back with a cycling company to Treetop Walkway to begin the bike ride.
West Coast Wilderness grade 2/3 cycle trail takes riders from Ross to Greymouth through West Coast’s past. With Totara Rail Bridge’s recent closure, avoid cycling SH6 from Ross and begin a 115km journey from Treetop Walkway. Twenty metres above ground, amid giant rimu and miro treetops it overlooks fern canopies with Southern Alps and Lake Mahinapau peeks, accompanied by birdsong. Cycle historic, forested Mahinapau Tramway Walk, used by sawmilling bogeys with relics and an 1885 sawmilling site trailside.
Close to Hokitika, Scenic Waterways’ sunset cruise along canal-like Mahinapau Creek provides picturesque reflections of flax and kahikatea trees lining its blackish water. Spot kingfisher, heron, cormorant and swallows.
Explore Hokitika’s wide streets and heritage buildings of the gold-rush port around the river mouth. The hues of pounamu can be seen in stores and at Glowworm Dell, rock walls sparkle at night.
Back cycling, wooden Kaniere Waterway flowing with water and draped by verdant bush is delightful. Pounamu tinges Arahura River green; Kumara Reservoir’s shore, littered with barren tree trunks and stumps, is strangely beautiful.
Wander through the past in the late 1800′s gold mining town of Kumara, historic buildings on its main street dominated by the two-storeyed, 1876 Theatre Royal Hotel and cycle to Greymouth on the fourth day. Shuttle back to Hokitika and drive the car back to Greymouth, 37km, 28 minutes each way.
Greymouth to Brunner Mine – 13km, 13 minutes
Reaching Greymouth, drive to Brunner Mine, a Tohu Whenua (landmarks that tell our stories) site and where NZ’s worst industrial accident, an 1896 explosion that killed 65 coalminers. Brunner Walk is a moving experience, with historical information among the site’s remains.
Greymouth to Westport – 102km, 1.5 hours
Kawatiri Coastal Trail, currently links Westport to Virgin Flat Road, running alongside Buller River, Carters Beach, to Cape Foulwind Walkway and its lighthouse, and Cape Foulwind Seal Colony where seals camouflage on rocks. Riding horseshoe-shaped Tauranga Bay leads to Nine Mile Beach then farmland and stunning, verdant native bush overlooking tannin-stained, white sand-bottomed Ōkari River.
Denniston is another Tohu Whenua site. The plateau, where numerous coalmining settlements stood from 1878, can be toured independently; information panels relate history, family stories and daily life. But live it through Westport-based OutWest’s tour, from the steep, incline railway, wagons, workshops, mine shafts, coal seams, aerial ropeway, to settlement remains; hotels, homes, bathhouses, tennis courts, and swimming pool.
OutWest also tour working, open-cast Stockton Mine. See coal transported via aerial ropeway buckets for loading on to trains and the mine’s “nerve centre”, monitoring the 23km-squared site. Driving the pitted, stark landscape you’ll learn the history, coalmining process and witness the land’s rehabilitation.
Westport to Karamea – 95km, 1.5 hours
During the drive north, take in Punakaiki’s Pancake Rocks and Blowholes or walk Charming Creek Walkway, near Seddonville to explore more mining relics.
Karamea offers jaw-dropping scenery. At SH67′s Nikau palm-lined northern end, 17km from Karamea, embark on a stunning, predominantly flat, return walk on the Heaphy Track to Katipo Shelter. Paralleling the rocky coastline, enjoy tannin-stained Kohaihai River, Scotts Beach and towering Nikau palms.
Six kilometres from Karamea, take a torch to access stalactite-laden Tunnel Cave, a thoroughfare on the Fenian Caves Loop in The Fenian. Icicle-like stalactites hang from Miners Cave mouth. Between caves, the trail traverses lush, damp, moss-draped forest. Continue on wide, moss-covered Fenian Track below towering beech, to grassy Adams Flat where a replica miner’s hut sports rusted tools and a deer skull.
Take a day trip to Ōparara Basin, 28km from Karamea and a 1.5hour drive. It’s the location of Honeycomb Hill Cave which is only accessible with a tour. The high-ceilinged cave littered with stalagmites and stalactites is the resting place of bush moa, deer and kiwi bones, giant Powelliphanta snail shells, and fossilised seashells. Water droplets glitter on cave walls; glow worms form a starry sky on rock walls.
Nearby, white limestone Moria Gate Arch, 46m wide and 8m high, crossing whisky-coloured Ōparara River can be seen from a viewpoint but it’s more spectacular standing below the arch. More expansive, Ōparara Arch, among bush, resembles a stone bridge, but the river’s hues are the highlight; hokey pokey, blazing orange, dark rum.
Karamea to Reefton – 174km, 2.5 hours
Reefton, a goldmining town from 1870 to 1950, is movie set-like with 24 late-1800s buildings, its main street lined with tall, black streetlamps and historic wooden stores, hotels and banks. Pan for gold at the replica-1860s miner’s hut, where bearded “miners” share gold-mining stories. Walks and mountain bike tracks of varying grades incorporate mining relics within Victoria Forest Park.
Reefton to Ōtira – 135km, 1hr 45m
Leave the West Coast via Arthur’s Pass, SH73. Drop in, or stay, at the 1865-built Ōtira Stagecoach Hotel crammed with antiques, curios and historical photos. Rooms are delightfully furnished with period pieces including porcelain painted toilets and handbasins.
Ōtira to Arthur’s Pass Village – 13km, 14 minutes
Ōtira Viaduct will astound and before Arthur’s Pass Village, walk Dobson Nature Walk. Alpine vegetation blooms over summer, among majestic mountain ranges.
From the village, rocky Arthur’s Pass Walking Track undulates through beech forest, with some steep stairs. Bridal Veil Falls, viewing the village nestled at the base of mountains and historic Jack’s Hut are highlights. Branch off to cross Bealey River thundering down narrow Bealey Chasm and continue on Bealey Valley Track. Boardwalk crosses orange-tinged tussock, with stunning mountain vistas, to reach Bealey River backdropped by a snow-splattered ridge. Stairs challenge on Devil’s Punchbowl Falls Walk but reward with views of whitewater veiling icicle-like waterfalls behind.
Wander the quaint village of historic cottages, lodges and stores.
Arthur’s Pass Village, central Christchurch bound – 149km, 2hr 20m
Cutting between steep, bush-covered ranges or scree-covered in hues of grey, pink, red, and green, panoramas encompass Bealey and Waimakariri Rivers and Lake Pearson. Breathtaking.

The Site Of Bonnie And Clyde's Last Meal Is Worth A Road Trip
Few fugitives have captured the fascination of the American people like Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, the young, Depression-era lovers who swept the country in a wave of robbery, kidnapping, and murder. For roughly two years, they evaded police and drew the fury of many, while simultaneously becoming folk heroes to a lot of struggling people who'd been devastated by the stock market crash of 1929. And they helped sell a heck of a lot of newspapers. Nearly 100 years after their deaths, America is still captivated by Bonnie and Clyde.
Every detail of their chaotic final years is of interest to fans, with their last moments being particularly compelling. If these pop culture icons pique your interest, you won't want to miss a journey to Gibsland, Louisiana where you can visit the place where they unwittingly ate their last meal , minutes before police finally caught up with them and sent them to a very early grave. The tiny Bonnie & Clyde Ambush Museum is located in the building where Ma Canfield's Café sat on May 23, 1934, the day Bonnie and Clyde died. Sometimes called Rosa Canfield's Café, the law-breaking couple reportedly ate coffee and donuts in the morning there before ordering sandwiches to go.
The museum itself is not big and will cost guests only a few dollars to enter, but once inside, you'll find a world of newspaper clippings, replicas, mementos, and tchotchkes dedicated to the duo. In addition, there's a revived café in the back of the museum named Bonnie and Clyde Last Stop Café and, yes, you can order what they did.
But What Did Bonnie And Clyde Eat On That Fateful Day?
Like any good road trip destination, the Bonnie & Clyde Ambush Museum offers a taste of Americana, pop culture, true crime, history, some fake gore and, of course, a place to have lunch. After you've seen a replica of the couple's bullet-riddled, stolen "death car" (a nickname for the V-8 Ford they were killed in), Bonnie's actual fur coat and sweaters, Clyde's hat and shoes, and vintage firearms, step up to the counter at the Last Stop Café for sandwiches, cold drinks, and ice cream. The tale is that Bonnie and Clyde opted for fried bologna and BLT sandwiches before they hit the road, two items you'll find on the menu. If you can't decide, consider the "Ambush Special," which includes both bologna and bacon.
In front of the Ambush Museum is a sign that reads, "This is the location of Ma Canfield's Café where Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow stopped at 9am on May 23, 1934, picked up sandwiches and drove off to their deaths 7 miles away" (via The Historical Marker Database ). Naturally, the site of their last moments survives as well, marked by a stone monument that has been regularly defaced over the years. The couple were, after all, responsible for several deaths, and many believe nothing about them should be celebrated. But, for those interested in the macabre or the casual road tripper, both sites offer an undeniably compelling look at history.

The company launched Monday a website for the foundation that details 41 grantees who will collectively receive just north of $10 million in funding. The website lifts the hood on one of the more closely guarded promises made by Rivian around the time of its blockbuster IPO.

Roland Dane: The Great American Road Trip – Part 3
Roland finishes his road trip across the usa with a trip to watkins glen and amish country..
After enjoying the sights and sounds of Washington DC, especially the Georgetown district, for a couple of days, the Cadillac Escalade and I set out north towards Watkins Glen, the venue of the weekend’s NASCAR event. The Glen is somewhere I’ve been wanting to go to for years, given its Formula 1 history, and the reports from all and sundry about the beauty of the setting in Upstate New York.
But first things first. After crossing the Mason Dixon line that signaled entry into the state of Pennsylvania, I headed for Lancaster County. I’ve long been fascinated by the Amish community and their way of life, and Lancaster has one of the larger Amish populations in the US.

The area is stunningly well kept, with a myriad of small to medium sized farms and immaculate lanes and gardens. Of course, not everyone there is Amish by a long shot, but there is the same sense of order and cleanliness throughout, from what I saw. There’s a huge Germanic base to the population in general , as evidenced by many of the place names ending in ‘Burgh’.
One of the stand outs for me for this area was the proliferation of trust boxes alongside arrays of fresh vegetables and eggs laid out at the front of so many properties. It’s a system that clearly works and is respected.

The sight of the traditional buggy on the road ways was cool to witness, as were horse drawn ploughs in the fields, and carts carrying the tobacco crop back to the drying sheds on the farms. Apparently not all Amish still use these buggies, however plenty clearly remain in action. You and I might not wish to lead our lives that way, but it’s good to see those that do want to can go about their lives in the way they wish.
Heading north to The Glen, it would have been crazy to get that close to the Niagara Falls without taking them in. The journey takes about two and a half hours, in a north westerly direction, from the town of Watkins Glen to the Falls, but well worth it. We, the #2 daughter and I, were smart enough to follow the advice of others and head over the border to the Canadian side to get a real sense of the scale and power of this wonder of nature. And then the drive back to the racing world took us down past Seneca Lake, one of the Finger Lakes, through the vineyards of New York State. Another wonderfully picturesque trip and highly recommended.
Post an exciting weekend’s racing at The Glen, I headed for the nearby town of Corning. The home of Corning Inc, famous for glass manufacturing in particular, the aptly named Glass Museum there is a real treat and a must visit destination in that part of the world. The town itself is also a gem with a beautiful historic section full of cafes and restaurants that are not part of any chain!
Heading down to Pittsburgh on the final leg of my journey as I make my way back to Charlotte to drop off the Cadillac and start the trip home, I started thinking about a chat I had with the doorman at the hotel in Washington DC. I’d asked him why there were no big limousines to be seen anywhere around the city these days. I’ve not only grown up seeing these ‘stretch’ limos on tv and in films for decades, but I used to sell them in the Middle East and Asia myself 30 years ago.
The answer was very straightforward.
They’ve all died a death as the ubiquitous black Chevrolet Suburban has replaced them. It’s obvious once you think about it. The Suburban is infinitely more practical, easier to get in and out of, carries more luggage and costs less! With the inevitable blacked out windows, everyone looks like they’re a CEO, a Senator or part of a Secret Service detail.
Take a look back at the Suburban over the decades, and how it’s developed from a gawky looking, huge estate car on stilts, to the latest suave looking product that is at home in the swankiest settings in town. It’s become a highly successful workhorse for the chauffeur car trade, replacing not only the old limos but also the standard Lincoln Town Car that was omnipresent forever on the streets of Washington and New York.
So, I have to ask the question as to why GM Specialty Vehciles (GMSV) are not bringing this model into Australia? Given that it retails in the US for similar money to the shorter, standard, GMC Yukon , doesn’t it make more sense than the Yukon?
The Suburban could be a tool of the trade for top end of the chauffeur business in Sydney, Melbourne and the other major cities. I reckon that it would go down a treat with them especially if it had the diesel engine option with a 1200km range. The back seat punters wouldn’t know, or care, whether the engine was diesel or petrol, but the resale value of the diesel would be outstanding down the road.

If the crew at GMSV are hell bent on establishing the GMC brand now, with the Yukon, then at least look at bringing into the longer wheelbase version of that model, the XL, which is basically a higher spec Suburban in any case. Get the price right, and the engine option right, and it’ll sell in good numbers. Unlike the standard Yukon, it won’t have any real competition. Against the likes of the Mercedes V Class in a top line specification, the Suburban is a far classier, and roomier, alternative for upscale transportation.
Anyway, back on the road, I’ll be sad to say goodbye to the Escalade. It’s a wonderful cruiser at highway speeds in the US and not as thirsty as you might expect. It’s also one of those vehicles that gets a thumbs up from other road users. Clearly the Cadillac badge still means something.
There have been many pleasant surprises along the way, large and small, but one of my favourite little gems of typical American convenience is the ability to latch every petrol delivery handle into position whilst the car is filling up. Why can’t we have these?
This trip has been another fascinating insight into the heartland of the United States, away from the big metro areas for the most part. Most of the roads continue to impress me as well as the infrastructure, once you’re away from the older, rust belt, cities. It really has been a treat to drive through the hills and mountains of three states in particular – West Virginia, Virginia and New York. The highways are great, the fuel stops and hotels easy to find and everyone has been hospitable and polite. Given we speak pretty much the same language, it’s hard to think of a better place to take a road trip if you’re going overseas. Just don’t talk politics…

The road - well, road surface is quite fine, but it isn't a freeway (runs through villages and towns, has traffic lights etc.), so, the trip takes much longer that is could if the road was up to modern standards (a new good one is under construction, but is a couple years away from entering service).
