14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

Joining a tour can take the guesswork out of planning, making adventures safer, more affordable, and fun.

sr travel worb

Whether you’re ready to take the trip of a lifetime after retirement or just want to make new friends on a relaxed walking vacation, there are many reasons to book with a specialist travel company. Senior-friendly travel groups take the time-consuming research and guesswork out of planning, especially if you want to go to multiple destinations or experience a place from a local perspective. Group travel is safer for mature adventurers, and options are often categorized by activity level, so you can be sure you’re not biting off more than you can chew. There are also trips specially designed for singles.

These travel companies offer a range of tours for every budget and mode of transportation, from bikes to cruises. Some are specifically aimed at seniors, while others feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Road Scholar emphasizes the value of "lifelong learning" with affordable, educational journeys.
  • Choose an "easygoing" Dolce Tempo walking tour or a more challenging adventure with Backroads.
  • With expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide, Kensington Tours can craft the perfect itinerary for your group.
  • Senior Cycling offers intermediate and advanced bike tours for active over-50s, which are always accompanied by a "sag wagon."
  • Despite the name, the AARP-approved Grand European Travel extends beyond the continent with a wide range of destinations, budget options, and modes of transportation.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, this nonprofit organization rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of "lifelong learners" who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and immersive educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific subject. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal itinerary.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. Tours typically include participants in a variety of age groups, with an average age of 55. The company offers guided biking, walking, and "multi-adventure" tours to destinations across the globe, including Antarctica. There are women-only trips and options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include an Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides family trips to countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa that come with private vehicles, local guides, and kid-friendly dining options.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling typically limits groups to 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–35 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company is part of The Travel Corporation , which represents more than 40 brands, including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours. Despite the name, offerings extend far beyond the continent and range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. The company also creates itineraries specifically for women over 55 so solo travelers can feel secure in far-flung destinations (or those closer to home).

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from five to eight miles and are described as easy to moderate.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which focus on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for more than five hours.

Firebird Tours

Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the northern lights , as well as theater and opera. Seniors might want to check out a sightseeing highlights tour of Italy , or a two-week rail journey across Scandinavia with guided tours in cities like Copenhagen and Stockholm and an overnight in a scenic Norwegian fjord town.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of its customers travel alone (half are solo women), O.A.T. has created getaways with single travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, holiday markets in Europe , or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Looking for travel groups geared toward singles? The company's solo tours provide private rooms, social events, and personalized experiences like yoga and cooking classes. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made options, from walking tours in U.S. national parks to Galápagos Islands cruises . Seniors might want to check out the Premium or Comfort trips, which offer more upscale accommodations and private transportation. Each trip is given a physical rating between one and five to help you determine its strenuousness, and consultants can help travelers with disabilities choose the perfect itinerary.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations are scattered around the world, with a particularly wide choice in the U.S. and Europe, including a variety of cruise options. The company also arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, typically entails four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

Travel Clubs for Seniors

The Best Travel Clubs for Seniors are a great way to travel with others. You can find new senior travel partners and make friendships. In some clubs you can even travel with friends or family plus enjoy the company of new travel companions.

Senior Travel Club

What are Travel Clubs for Seniors and Why Join one?

Senior Travel Clubs differ from other types of group travel. Travel clubs usually charge a small fee. Sometimes they ask for a modest initial fee to help cover their own expenses. To justify paying these fees realize that there are benefits.

  • Club only discounts
  • Travel Brochures or other well-researched resources.
  • Host visits from experienced travelers who can offer advice.
  • Often, you can personally ask questions and get helpful information.

Clubs have meetings and Senior Travel Clubs aren’t any different.

These meeting might be once a month or only a few times a year. When a trip is being planned, it is a social event.

You can help in the decision making; it can be fun and rewarding. You don’t need to do it all alone and you can get or receive help.

The planning becomes a shared experience and the excitement can be contagious!

Senior Travel Club Meeting

Club Safety

For many reasons, there is always safety in traveling with others. It may deter being targeted by those eager to steal from you or con you.

With a Travel Club one important consideration might be transportation.

Many Club Trips are taken by bus or car.

Even some bus, plane or train trips require transportation to the bus station, airport, or train station. So if the destination is close or far, you can usually share the driving or not drive at all if that is your preference.

You might have difficulty driving at night now or a disability might hinder your safety with driving. Whatever the reason, being a member of a travel club solves the problem.

As older adults, health is often a consideration when traveling. Taking trips with a group is one way to leave some of our health concerns behind.

An advantage of a club is traveling with others closer to our age. Many will have health issues of various kinds just like you.

Have you ever rejected family vacations with younger members because you didn’t want to slow them down? At this time of life we are entitled to travel on our own terms.

Covid has presented most Senior Travelers with additional challenges. Senior Travel Clubs will have health safety requirements which will give you a sense of protection.

Types of Travel Clubs for Seniors

Senior Travel groups vary by size. While some have a small number of travelers, others are much larger.

Another distinction is whether or not a club allows you to bring a partner, friend, or family members along. Some clubs do not allow this but rather require exclusive membership for all travelers.

Although not all clubs are commercial, many are. These commercial travel clubs are hosted by large companies.

Some advice, beware of scams in regard to commercial clubs. Do your research, check for references, and if necessary use the Better Business Bureau.

One Red Flag might be pressure to join. Another would be a high fees in exchange for promised large discounts. Legitimate Travel Clubs usually charge a modest fee.

Where to find Senior Travel Clubs

Some examples:

  • Alumni, Veterans, Retiree organizations
  • Sporting, arts, nature, birding
  • Community Centers,  religious, volunteer
  • Cultural or languages
  • RV, motorcycle, car, train groups.

Sometimes you will find that your church or Senior Citizen Center may have their own travel clubs.

You may also discover travel clubs to suit you on the Internet or through Social Media such as Facebook and Pinterest.

How to choose a Travel Club for Seniors

This personal choice has criteria that can differ from person to person.

Do you want your trip to reflect your hobby or are you interested in the adventure of sightseeing a new location?

What is your age and activity level? How does the club support these individual needs? Are there any levels to determine this?

Many of us seniors can choose the length of our vacations. How long would you like yours to last; a day, a week, a month?

What kind of transportation do you prefer when traveling?

If you are wary of traveling right now due to Covid concerns, some clubs have Virtual Trips.

These can be interesting and a way to meet some of the members for future trips.

These are all considerations for choosing a club that will enable you to travel with “peace of mind” as a senior worry free and get the most out of your travels.

What to Look for in a Senior Travel Group

When searching for a senior travel group, consider the following key factors to ensure an enjoyable and fulfilling travel experience.

Itinerary and Destinations

Look for a travel group that offers diverse and well-planned itineraries to destinations that align with your interests and preferences, whether it’s cultural exploration, nature-focused trips, or a mix of both.

Check the group size to ensure it is comfortable for you. Smaller groups often allow for more personalized experiences and flexibility during the trip.

Travel Pace and Physical Requirements

Assess the travel pace and physical demands of the trips offered to ensure they match your fitness level and mobility needs.

Tour Guides and Expertise

Review the credentials and experience of the tour guides leading the trips, as knowledgeable guides can greatly enhance your travel experience.

Accommodations

Check the quality and suitability of accommodations provided during the trip to ensure they meet your comfort standards.

Inclusions and Exclusions

Check the package details to understand what’s included (e.g., meals, activities, entrance fees) and what additional expenses you might need to budget for.

Group Dynamics and Social Activities

Consider the social aspect of the travel group, as meeting like-minded individuals can greatly enhance your journey, so look for groups that offer ample opportunities for group interactions and social activities.

Customer Reviews and Testimonials

Read reviews and testimonials from previous travelers to gauge their satisfaction and overall experience with the travel group.

By carefully considering these factors, you can choose a senior travel group that aligns with your interests, preferences, and requirements, making your journey a memorable and enjoyable one.

Thanks for the reviews. Saga looks like the best fit for me then. Anyone have an experience of this company to share please. I will be travelling solo from NZ and want to visit Europe and would love to travel with similar age/likeminded people.

Barbara Michaels

OAT will not work with your travel agent. You have to make all your own bookings and if there is a problem, you most likely will call and get a different person every time.

I would NOT recommend G Adventures. They cater to a younger crowd, often times the accommodations are like hostels and may be uncomfortable for older people. Also, if one has limited mobility, lots of walking and vehicles driving long distances are not adequate for older people.

What travelers are saying

"I was just diagnosed with a malignant melanoma one day before my trip to Croatia, and am scheduled for emergency surgery. The airlines and hotel both gave me an immediate refund, although they had nonrefundable cancellation policies. Road Scholar would not even give me a credit. I felt like I had been slapped in the face. It was so cruel. At a time when I especially need funds and when compassion means so much, Road Scholar did not have that to offer."

"Very packed your with many good points, but let down by poor organisation of the bus seating. I was a solo traveller who was forced to sit next to the same person for every leg of the tour, except the last - after I emailed a complaint to Globus. Four people had a double seat to themselves the entire journey. When I asked the tour director for a turn, he fobbed me off & was rude & sexist. There was too much free time without access to hotel eg. One day we travelled early from Florence to Venice, got dropped by the bus at the ferry to the island (St Marks Place etc) & then had to spend the whole day in Venice with the heat & crowds, much of it undirected, until nearly 8pm when we caught the ferry back & then to our hotel. 43 people is too many. I was the only Australian with 42 mostly mid western Americans, mostly teetotallers and missionaries. Next time I'd choose a solo traveller tour, or a specific art or history one, but I wanted a short tour that went from Rome & ended in Paris, so chose this one. On the positive, the hotels & meals were good. Switzerland, even though raining, was a standout as we had two days at Lucerne & ample free time. Optional tours like Versailles were great."

"We recently finished the Gate 1 tour of Ireland. It advertises as 10 days, but it is not actually 10 days, and I'd like to be sure that people who are considering the tour understand that. Day 1 is for leaving to arrive in Ireland. Day 2 is for arriving in Ireland. Day 10 is for leaving Ireland to go home. That effectively leaves 7 days for a tour. I wrote to Gate 1 because the tour actually was only 6 days. On Day 9 there was no longer a tour bus driver. Gate 1 sent him home. Instead, they hired a local driver to take people on an "optional tour" to the Irish EPIC museum, which was actually within a reasonable walking distance of our hotel. If you didn't pay to go to this museum, you were finished with the tour on Day 8 and left to pay for your own transportation and planned excursion on Day 9. I told Gate 1 that they could have taken the entire group to a place like the National Botanic Gardens on Day 9 (our last day) instead of the museum. It was quite expansive and lovely, and it's free to enter. We had to pay for the transportation to get there. Ireland was enjoyable to visit, but Gate 1 needs to advertise its tours properly. "The tour actually lasts for 6 days unless you go on an optional tour on your last day in Ireland.""

"This was their July 22 Cruise “Delights if the Danube” Absolutely awful company, great at taking your bookings and money but it then ends there. We paid a premium rate for what they listed as “Delights of The Danube” river cruise. They changed our ship, so we did not get what we paid for, and no pool as we originally specified. The drinks in the drinks package had very little choice. One draft beer is all that is available, and that is pretty poor as it is, you can’t even buy bottled beers or any other draught beer as that one is your only choice. Wines at meal times are either red, white or Rosa, no choice, just those three. The ship they put us on “boasted” a new wine bar, it didn’t serve any wines or beers at all the entire week, it wasn’t even stocked or manned, but it did have a kettle and tea or coffee !!!. The trips ashore are advertised to deceive you, this is appalling. Some of the trips are over two and a half hours each way on a coach, and the shorter ones are rushed, don’t be fooled by their misleading advertising. The train journeys are an absolute nightmare, even though we booked first class there and back. You have to rush between connecting trains while dragging your luggage with you, and the connecting times are tight, we felt so sorry for those less able who were severely stressed. On part of the journey we were told that 1st class was not available, we were put in filthy overcrowded carriages, with our luggage carriages away, and professional thieves operate on these trains. Some of our fellow passengers, on our cruise, were robbed on the way to the cruise and the way home. Great Rail offered us the paltry sum of £30 compensation for this. Once we got on the cruise we were excited, but that quickly changed, we spent the first two days moored up overlooking an industrial estate, yes an industrial estate, that’s what Great Rail advertise as a “Delight of the Danube”. When we complained and asked why are we on an industrial estate,we were told “because it’s cheaper than mooring up in a city or town”. We complained to the reps on the cruise, as did numerous others, only to be told that they don’t actually work for Great Rail, they are sub contracted free lancers, and that we would have to take it up with Great Rail upon our return. After numerous phone calls and e-mails we have been offered a derisory amount on one of their vouchers, which only benefits Great Rail, why would we want to go back with such an incompetent company? The communication with Great Rail is appalling once they have your money, be warned. Overall I have to say that Great Rail are appalling, amateurs playing in a market they simply don’t understand, their advertising is very misleading, that’s putting it politely!! The tone of their responses are arrogant, they simply ignore many of the points raised, and they honestly don’t seem to care, they are all image and no substance."

"My sister and I just came back from an incredible trip to Patagonia (both Argentina and Chile). Valentina at Global Basecamps did an excellent job organizing the trip for us, listening to our wishes, and then creating a custom trip that included both independent exploration and private-guided sections. She was very knowledgeable and patient with all our pre-trip questions (we had many!) and organized a great itinerary for us. We hit all the places we were interested in and everything went smoothly throughout the trip: hotels, transfers, excursions. The local tour guides were knowledgeable, welcoming, patient, and eager to share the beautiful places and interesting aspects of their country. A particular thank you to Luciano in El Chalten/El Calafate and JP and Camila at Estancia Cerro Guido, who went above and beyond to accommodate us. This was an expensive trip for us, but well worth it thanks to Global Basecamps and we will definitely contact them for our next travels!"

"Found company on the internet and we were a bit nervous. Alick Peng put a 12 day tour together for us, our dates didn't fit in with a full guided tour, and it was magnificent. We enjoyed every day, hotels, food and especially the guides, Ayumi especially. The itinerary was first class and we even managed to travel between towns on our own. "We just returned from a 7-night trip to France. We had a group of four that ranged in age from 18 to 74. The team at Paris-Toujours created a wonderful seamless plan that worked well for the entire group. Before and during the trip, communication was very good. We received a detailed roadmap just before our departure. Our requests were incorporated in such a nice way. The entire trip went to plan with no issues. The hotel selection was lovely. Laurence, our tour guides, drivers, and the hotel staff were welcoming and made the trip magical. Anne-Marie and Marie, our tour guides in Paris, were knowledgeable and fun to spend time with touring the city. Our guides in Champagne and the Loire Valley were very good as well. All four of us loved the trip and wished we could have stayed longer. We will return! Thank you Paris-Toujours for the fantastic memories of Paris, Champagne, and the Loire Valley."

How to Choose the Right Senior Travel Group

When selecting a senior travel group, it’s important to consider your health, interests and travel preferences. Each group offers a unique experience, and choosing the right one can make a big difference in your overall enjoyment and comfort. Here’s a bit more detail on what to think about before making a decision:

  • Interests and preferences: Different travel groups cater to various interests, from educational tours and cultural experiences to adventure and relaxation. Reflect on what excites you the most — whether it’s learning about new cultures, exploring natural wonders or engaging in physical activities like hiking.
  • Health needs: Some tours involve a lot of walking or physical activity, while others are more leisurely. It’s important to consider your health needs when choosing a travel group.
  • Group size and dynamics: Travel groups vary in size, from small, intimate groups to larger gatherings. Smaller groups typically offer a more personalized experience, while bigger groups may offer more structured itineraries and additional amenities.
  • Travel duration and style: Different groups offer various trip lengths and styles. Some might focus on short city breaks, while others offer extended journeys or multiple-week adventures.
  • Cost and value: Travel costs can vary widely depending on the destination, length of the trip and level of included amenities. While many senior travel groups provide all-inclusive packages, prices can range from budget-friendly to luxury options. It’s important to find a group that offers good value and fits within your budget. Compare what’s included in the package, such as meals, accommodations and activities, to ensure you’re getting the best experience for your money.
  • Social opportunities: If making new friends and socializing is important to you, consider choosing a travel group that promotes social interaction.
  • Safety and support: Ensure that the travel group you choose prioritizes safety and offers adequate support throughout your journey. Look for groups that have clear safety protocols and offer assistance in case of emergencies. It’s also helpful if the group provides pre-trip information, travel insurance options and 24/7 support during the trip.

Resources and Tools for Finding Senior Travel Groups

If you’re looking to find senior travel groups, there are plenty of resources and tools available to help you connect with like-minded travelers and plan memorable trips. Here are some great places to start:

  • Senior travel websites: Websites like Senior Travel Expert offer directories and reviews of travel groups and tours specifically designed for seniors. They often have listings of organized trips and activities suited for older travelers.

You've worked hard your whole life and dreamed of traveling to several exotic locations. Now that you've retired, it's time to hit the road (or runway). Perhaps you want to travel with your spouse, join a group of older adults, or join family or friends on their vacations. The options are limited only by your pocketbook and your imagination.

In this guide, we'll share travel tips for seniors, ways to save on travel, benefits of senior travel groups, clubs and tours, as well as benefits of senior travel.

Table of Contents

Senior travel tips, how can seniors save on travel, what are the benefits of senior travel groups/clubs and tours for seniors, benefits of senior travel.

You've waited a long time to enjoy this time in your life. Let's look at things you can do in advance to ensure you have the best experience possible on your travels.

  • Start with the CDC Destination List . Plug in where you're going to find out what medications and vaccines you need and about any health risks to be aware of.
  • Check what your health insurance covers when you're out of the country. Many Medicare supplemental insurance plans do not provide coverage outside of the United States. That's why it's important to purchase travel insurance which provides some much-needed coverage to give you peace of mind.
  • Travel insurance will typically cover unexpected events, such as trip cancellations, medical expenses, lost luggage, and emergency incidents associated with travel. Since medical issues are more likely to arise for older travelers, it makes sense to buy travel insurance in case you need to cancel the trip due to a medical problem.

Pro Tip: Looking for travel insurance, but don't know where to start? View our helpful guide on Best Travel Insurance for Seniors in 2024 .

Although most people dream of traveling during retirement, according to Kiplinger, 20 percent of adults over 50 have no retirement savings. Many are worried about juggling the high cost of housing, health, education and food. Therefore, many Americans will need to be creative to fulfill their wanderlust after retirement.

Fun Fact: When it comes to discretionary spending, 85 percent of senior travelers rank travel amongst their top three priorities, according to AARP.

Knowing that travel is important to seniors, but they don't want to break the bank to explore a new city or continent, we've collected the best ways to help you save on travel and vacation costs (including cruises):

  • Off-season travel: Since you're probably retired or semi-retired and no longer tied to a time clock, you probably have the flexibility of traveling during off-peak travel times and can take advantage of lower rates. Off-season travel gives you further savings on accommodations and attractions. Three great places to find discount flights are The Flight Deal, Secret Flying, and HolidayPirates.
  • Days to fly: Some experts say flights on Tuesday and Wednesday often cost less for domestic trips and flights on Wednesday and Saturday will save you money on international trips.
  • Honey browser extension: Honey is a free service (a browser extension) that automatically searches for discounts and coupon codes for you. Adding Honey to your browser can help you get discounts on hotel stays and flights.
  • Senior discounts: Many organizations and retailers offer senior discounts, so be sure to inquire about them as you make reservations and search for travel. For example, as you may know, members of AARP can find loads of travel discounts . Check out our guides to AARP flight discounts and AARP hotel discounts for a closer look. AAA and veterans' groups also pass along discounts at hotels, airlines, tour providers, and car rental agencies to their members. Many hotels offer senior discounts . Some airlines might still offer discounts on their senior fares for specific routes.
  • The National Park Service: The National Park Service sells an $80 (plus a $10 handling fee) senior pass to those 62 and older that's good for a lifetime. You can also buy an annual pass for $20.
  • Hostel stays: Hostels offer dorm-style accommodations at affordable prices. Hostels are most popular with younger travelers, but seniors who enjoyed their time there say they're pretty clean and safe. Some hostels have age limits so be sure to check. Sites to help locate a hostel include Hostels.com, HostelWorld.com, Hosteling International, and Hostel Bookers.
  • Airbnb stays: An Airbnb can allow you to stay in someone's home instead of a hotel. Accommodations may be an entire home or someone's spare room. You can find unique accommodations ranging from a castle to an igloo.
  • Cruise resources: Kiplinger.com provides articles and tips on cruises. Cruise Sheet and Vacations To Go are great sites for cruise deals and discounts. None of these sites are specifically geared to seniors, but AARP is. Read our guide to AARP cruise discounts for more details.
  • Senior travel clubs and groups: Senior travel clubs/groups organize trips for like-minded members, offering vacation packages at great rates. ElderTreks specializes in adventure travel for seniors. (Row Adventures and Walking the World offer adventure travel for active adults, not specifically seniors.) Before joining a senior travel club near you or a major travel group that you've read about, be sure to read their literature and check with the Better Business Bureau.
  • Voluntourism: A volunteer vacation allows you to give back in a multitude of ways and learn about various cultures. The trips aren't free, but they are rewarding and provide an economical way to visit a particular area. National and international opportunities are available. Some organizations to check out include Discover Corps and Global Volunteers, which have a range of activities , including varying levels of physical activity that would appeal to seniors. (American Hiking Society caters to physically active individuals. Earthwatch is a fit for those interested in environmental research but may require moderate physical exertion.)
  • Educational travel: Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel International) offers thousands of educational adventures for seniors, both nationally and internationally. Each year, 300 scholarships are offered to those who don't have the financial means to participate. Check out our guide to websites for seniors , which recommends the following senior-only groups: Road Scholar, ElderTreks, and Overseas Adventure Travel (O.A.T.).

Groups do the legwork for you. You travel with fellow seniors and trips are designed with the physical capabilities of older adults in mind. For example, tour operators ensure you have accessible transportation, that the trips proceed at a reasonable pace, and that your senior-friendly hotels are located in safe areas.

Tours are generally led by expert guides steering you toward the best sites to see while at specific locales. Senior travel groups and tours are usually designed so that everyone eats meals together and can socialize. If you're traveling solo, joining a group is a great way to travel with added security and without feeling alone.

Did You Know? If you have special needs, senior travel and tour companies will likely still welcome you. Touch base with the group you plan to travel with to ensure they can accommodate your needs. The Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality (SATH) offers travel tips and access information for travel destinations. They also have a great listing of disability travel websites.

Groups might use travel agencies to buy tickets and accommodations in bulk or make the arrangements themselves. So, they can pass the savings on airfares, hotels, and tours on to you, which is cost effective. Tour planners make arrangements with your age, safety factors, entertainment, and cost-effectiveness in mind — making their expertise very valuable!

Travel during retirement is more than an enjoyable activity. It's good for your health ! Whether you travel alone, with your spouse, some friends, or a senior group, here are just some of the many health benefits of travel:

  • Travel keeps you active. Older adults who are more physically active have lower rates of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.
  • Taking a vacation or a short-term break in a relaxing environment can reduce stress and improve immunity and well-being.
  • Travel stimulates and challenges your brain as you encounter new people, cultures, and environments.
  • Travel strengthens and deepens friendships, which is good for your wellbeing.
  • The Global Coalition on Aging found many physical, cognitive, and social benefits of travel.
  • Travel is plain fun!

Fun Fact: According to a study in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, scientists were surprised to discover that respondents who travel frequently became more optimistic. They were able to think positively outside their original “closed environment” when facing challenges and improve their long-term mental state.

How to Travel as a Senior (20 Simple Tips)

If you’re wondering whether to start or continue traveling in old age (depending on when you were bitten by the travel bug), the simple answer is yes. Exploring the world and meeting new people can keep you looking young and energetic longer. Also, there are more seniors interested in traveling nowadays.

How to travel as a senior depends on your interests, budget, personality, among other factors. With a few simple tips, senior travelers can figure out how to best explore the world. These include ways to cut costs, how to travel solo as a senior, and tips to ensure your safety while on vacation.

This article covers our detailed list of senior travel tips for saving, traveling solo, and ensuring your safety when on holiday. Read on.

Saving Tips for Senior Travelers

Your budget is a key factor to consider when planning any trip. Even though seniors probably have more disposable income hence a more flexible budget, that doesn’t mean you want to spend all your money on making bookings or paying for travel arrangements.

You can strategically save on cash when traveling then put the extra amount to some other use like buying souvenirs for yourself and loved ones. Here are some easy saving tips you can implement.

How to Travel as a Senior (20 Simple Tips)

Inquire About Discounts

Being a senior has its perks. There are a number of hotels and airlines that offer senior travel discounts . But most of the time, these won’t be overly advertised. That’s why you should take the initiative and ask about such offers.

Before making a booking, compare the discounts available in various hotels. Then once you find the one that has both a high discount and offering great services, close the deal.

But apart from senior discounts, you can also look for other special offers that you qualify for. Find out about these opportunities for cutting costs. In the end, you’ll definitely choose the offer that allows you to save the most money in the long run.

Travel Out of Season

I know it can be quite tempting to succumb to the excitement of traveling when everyone else is traveling, too, i.e., during high travel seasons. But this is most often going to cost you more than you would want to spend. Hotel prices and airfares skyrocket during high-peak seasons. That’s why it’s better to plan your vacation during the off-peak seasons when price tags are much lower.

If you travel during shoulder seasons (just before or just after the high season months), you can easily save on your vacation costs. From discounted airfares to cheaper hotel prices and affordable entrance fees to attractions. This is just what you need if you want to travel within a budget.

What is more, why not take advantage of the fact that you no longer have strict work schedules that limit your flexibility. So it’s entirely up to you to choose when to go on holiday.

Join Organizations That Offer Senior Travel Discounts

There are different organizations in various countries that entirely focus on retired people. Such organizations may have offers for senior travelers to encourage them to travel. Take, for example, AARP in America.

This America’s Association of Retired Persons has a number of discounts for mature travelers. You can get hotel discounts, cruises with reduced price tags for seniors, and discounts on car rental services.

There are also activity and restaurant discounts. All this information can be accessed on their website. Make sure to check frequently because some offers are available for just a limited period of time.

Use Cheaper Modes of Transport

Traveling by air is often more expensive than other forms of transport. So if you want to pay less, you should definitely try out different means of traveling, for example, using the train. You may find yourself saving up to a few hundreds of dollars in the long run.

You can also opt to rent a car to travel to your destination or just get one on arrival at your vacation spot.

Traveling by train or car is obviously not as fast as taking a flight. But once again, that may not always be a big issue for seniors because of your flexible schedule.

Book Connecting Flights

If you still want to travel by air, then scout for ways of getting cheaper ticket prices. One solution is in connecting flights.

Direct flights are faster and generally cost more. On the other hand, booking connecting flights will take more time because of the long waiting hours at airports. But this is well worth it if you will end up paying less. Just carry a book to read when waiting.

Travel With a Group

Traveling with a group can allow you to take advantage of group discounts offered by different hotels or attractions.

You can either choose to form a traveling group with some of your senior friends or just travel with your family, including your kids and grandkids. This will give you time to also bond as a family.

If, by any chance, you aren’t a fan of huge traveling groups and just want a solo vacation, then read on for some more tips to help you out with that as well.

Tips for Solo Senior Travelers

For those who’ve never traveled solo, the idea of going to a new place alone may make you a bit anxious. But if you just look past your fears and plan well in advance, you’ll realize how interesting it is to travel alone.

For one, you get to do what you want, when you want. Being alone means you are also likely to meet and interact with more people. In the process, spending time alone on vacation can offer a great opportunity to discover new things about yourself.

All the same, we can’t overlook the few challenges that come with solo-traveling and especially for seniors. Here are some practical tips to help you travel solo like a pro and enjoy the experience.

Travel Light

How to Travel as a Senior (20 Simple Tips)

Traveling alone means you won’t have someone to hold your bags as you dash to the washrooms or grab a snack. This is one of the reasons you should travel light.

Carry only what you need and nothing more so as to keep your luggage at a minimum. If all your belongings can fit into just one bag, the better. So, I guess you might want to check out this video that shows how to pack items for three weeks into just one backpack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eqc4A3J5rWg

Whenever possible, carry items that can multitask or be compressed and fit in small spaces. For example, get a travel scarf with hidden pockets. A great example is the Elzama Infinity Loop Scarf with Hidden Zipper Pocket . It has hidden pockets where you can keep your passport, credit cards, hotel room keys, or even money. And the scarf itself will also keep you warm during flights.

For clothes, bring those that are easy to mix and match. Carry shoes that are comfortable to walk in so you won’t need to keep changing from one pair to another.

But more than just packing light, you’ll need to pack smart. Since seniors are easy targets of theft, ensure as much security of your luggage as possible, e.g., an anti-theft bag like Oscaurt Anti-theft Travel Backpack can keep your things safe when walking around. This backpack has hidden zippers, secret pockets, and is made of anti-cut fabric.

Volunteer on Vacation

Travelers can create unique itineraries that include offering some form of service to the communities in their destination. The idea of volunteering doesn’t mean your whole vacation has to be about helping others. You can set aside one day or even just a few hours and enjoy the rest of your vacation in leisure activities.

Volunteering on vacation is especially a great idea for solo senior travelers because of the opportunity to mingle with others. What is more, serving the local community will result in such a unique intimacy with a destination. You are not likely to enjoy such a close interaction if all you do is go sightseeing, hiking, and dining (not that there’s any problem doing any of these things).

In your retirement, you can offer the life skills you sharpened all through your working years—just partner with an organization that needs the specific skills that you have. You’ll be amazed at how fulfilling it is to offer your service for free and especially to people that are in dire need for them.

Get a Travel Roommate

This is a great strategy for socializing while traveling solo and, at the same time, cutting on costs. You may have noticed some hotels that charge more for solo travelers. To avoid this extra cost, organize to have a roommate for the time you’ll be staying at the said hotel.

Check out different tour operators that offer this option. If not, look into online forums that offer solo travelers the chance to pair up with other solo travelers who want to share a room.

Now, just so you know, having a total stranger for a roommate while on vacation can backfire on you if you get a not-so-easy-to-live-with kind of person. But on the flip side, you may match up with a really interesting individual who may end up being an amazing tour mate for the rest of your vacation.

So, take some time to weigh all your options before making this decision.

Go for a Special Interest Holiday

Special interest holidays are vacations designed around a particular interest, e.g., art, culinary, culture, etc. The point is to bring together people with the same interest for the sake of either learning a new skill or just enjoying their passion.

Solo trips are ideal for this kind of holiday. You may have put off learning a particular skill all your life due to your busy work and family life. Now that you have all this free time during your retirement, you might as well pursue that interest through a special interest holiday.

It’s never too late to learn a new skill if you just put your mind to it. For example, you can start salsa lessons, take a music course, or learn a new language in the country of origin.

The best thing about this type of holiday is getting to interact with people of similar interests. That means mingling with travelers of all age groups and cultures. It can be quite refreshing and enlightening.

Document Your Experiences

Even with the excitement of visiting new places, seeing amazing attractions, and experiencing diverse cultures, sometimes solo trips may actually get drab and lonely.

You are more likely to feel this weird emptiness during idle evenings with no activities planned. Or take, for example, the end of an exciting day when you sit at a table for one and realize there’s no one there to share stories of the amazing adventures you’ve had. But guess what, it doesn’t have to be that dull. These quiet moments are actually the essence of solo trips. Take such times to meditate and unwind.

You can also document your activities. Write in your journal the experiences you’ve had and maybe even include life lessons you’ve gained from your travels. It’s priceless to be able to refer to such documentations much later and reminisce about the wonderful time you had.

Whenever you travel alone, it’s important to be conscious of your surroundings and always think of your safety. This begins right from planning your vacation. For example, it wouldn’t be the best idea to travel to a destination whose security is questionable. Pick and choose your travel destinations wisely.

If you feel insecure about a place or a person while traveling, trust your gut, and distance yourself. Sometimes, in extreme situations, you may even need to raise an alarm so that other people can come to your rescue.

But it doesn’t have to get to that. There are ways seniors can keep safe while traveling or when on holiday. Let’s look at some of those tips.

Safety Tips for Senior Travelers

How to Travel as a Senior (20 Simple Tips)

Get Travel Insurance

It’s better to be safe than sorry. Even though you are extra cautious during your vacation, having travel insurance will come in handy in case something does happen.

As an older traveler, you are actually more vulnerable than your younger counterparts. Thieves see you as easy prey. So, your security measures need to be above that of the average traveler. Travel insurance is important for travelers of any age, but more so seniors.

You can get covered for medical issues. For example, the insurance can cover you if you get hurt while on vacation, or maybe you suddenly need extra medication due to unexpected situations like travel delays. If any of these things happen while in a foreign country, it may be harder or more expensive to get the necessary help. That’s when you’ll be glad you got insured.

You can also get insurance for your belongings. Reimbursement for lost luggage and replacement of stolen valuables are some of the benefits you’ll enjoy with such a cover. So you can at least be less anxious while walking around with, say an expensive camera.

All in all, look at the types of insurances available and identify the one that offers coverage that you need. Also, compare different insurance providers in order to get the best deal available.

And once you’ve got your travel insurance, remember to carry the details with you on vacation in case you need to make a claim.

Avoid Flashing Your Valuables

Now that you’re older, you probably own more items of high value than when you were younger. That’s great. But these valuables shouldn’t be carried around on each and every trip. If they are not very necessary during your holiday, it’s better to leave them at home where they are safe. That way, you don’t have to worry about losing the items to thieves and pickpockets.

Even so, there may be some valuables you want to carry with you on holiday. A good example is your camera for when you want to take some picture memories. Your wedding band may also be something you wouldn’t want to leave behind.

You’ll, therefore, need to be extra vigilant when moving around with such valuables. Don’t flash these items unnecessarily. If, for example, you are not using the camera, keep it inside your backpack.

The more people see your expensive stuff, the higher the chances of being a thief’s target. So investing in an anti-theft backpack, for example, is a great idea. Also, keep an eye on all your belongings at all times. This is especially necessary when in crowded places like airports and bus stations.

And in case you leave some valuables inside your hotel room, lock them up in the safe. You can’t trust anyone, not even the hotel staff.

Lock Up Important Documents

Apart from jewelry and expensive watches, your important documents are also very valuable and should be handled with great care.

To begin with, only carry the essential or necessary documents when traveling. Anything that you won’t need should be left back home. If you have several credit cards, you can consider just carrying two of them and leaving the rest behind.

Once booked into a hotel, lock up these documents in a safe. Only take them out with you on the days you truly need to use them. And even then, keep them as close as possible to you, e.g., use a belt pocket to carry IDs, cards, and money.

Keep a List of Emergency Contacts

One of the things that can really spoil an amazing holiday trip is getting scammed or having your belongings stolen. Any disaster, in general, is such a dampener of the excitement of traveling. What is more, it can throw you into a panic mode where you can’t even think straight.

Finding the phone number for an ambulance, the local police, or the embassy at such a time can be very hard. That’s why you need to prepare for such situations. Have a list of people you may need to call in case of an emergency—for example, your doctor, family, insurance, or your country’s embassy.

Save these contacts, preferably both in soft copy (in your phone) and hard copy (on a small card that can fit in your wallet or purse).

You can go a step further and create an “emergency plan.” Think out and note down the steps to take in case of an emergency. Have this information close to you in your wallet or purse.

Inform Friends and/or Family About Your Itinerary

According to AARP recommendations, you should inform others (family or friends) about your daily plans and whereabouts. This is especially necessary, but not restricted to when traveling solo.

For a thorough approach, send your itinerary to your family or friends back home. Ensure you clearly outline where you’re going, what you will be doing, and for how long.

Include emergency contacts, e.g., phone numbers of the embassy and the doctor.

Having all this information will be useful to your family if, for example, you cannot be reached for a long period of time or delay to get back home from a trip when you said you’ll be back.

Watch What You Eat and Drink

Most seniors don’t really have the luxury of eating anything they want because their stomachs have grown a bit sensitive. Some travelers also have multiple allergies. The best way to deal with this is to be very careful about what you eat or drink.

If you are looking for a place to eat, opt for a popular spot with many customers and try and observe how your food is being prepared. This way, you can be almost sure the food is going to be safe for your consumption.

Keep Enough Meds With You

We all know that with old age comes illnesses here and there. So, if you’re on any form of medication, stick to the doctor’s prescriptions even while away on vacation.

Carry all your meds in a carry-on bag where you can easily access them. Another important thing to remember is to carry extra meds just in case you get stuck during your travels and end up going back home on a later date than you had expected.

But apart from carrying extra meds, have a written list of all the medications you take, both their brand and generic names, their dosages, and information on where to buy them in your destination in case you will need to.

Exercise Hotel Safety

Most people tend to really trust hotels and feel safe there. But the truth is, you still need to be vigilant at the hotel in order to ensure your safety.

First up, before booking a room, inquire if it has a safety box where you can keep your valuables. As we’ve already mentioned, it’s crucial that you keep your valuable items locked in the safety box whenever you’re not in the room. This is whether there’s a hotel staff in there or not.

Secondly, request for a room that’s close to the elevator. The proximity to human traffic will deter thieves from trying to target your room.

Another tip is carrying a doorstop. This may come in handy in case your hotel room door lock is not so reliable.

Lastly, avoid announcing your absence. For example, if you’re leaving your hotel room and want to inform the staff to clean it, do not leave the door sign that requests for room cleaning. This sign will notify any passerby that you aren’t in and so you can easily attract thieves. Instead, inform the receptionist personally as you head out.

Final Thoughts

As you settle into your retirement years, take the opportunity to travel and see the world or visit your loved ones. You totally deserve it after the many years of work that you’ve gone through.

But before you set out, make sure you arm yourself with the right information on how to travel as a senior. Learn the tricks of cutting on costs, including traveling during shoulder seasons, asking for discounts, and traveling with a group.

If you are one to go for it solo, then it will serve you well if you learn how to travel light to avoid too much luggage. You may also want to include a volunteer project during your vacation just to interact more with the locals and get that sense of fulfillment.

Lastly, your safety should be your number one priority as you roam the world. Get travel insurance and always be aware of your surroundings. Being older, thieves already think you’re an easy target, so don’t make yourself even more prone to theft by carelessly flashing your valuables. All in all, keep your family and close friends informed of your whereabouts. Travel safe.

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

New part-time traffic lane in Washington aims to ease congestion, improve commute times

by Shelby Slaughter

FILE – Drivers wait in traffic while crews with the Washington State Department of Transportation work on a road construction project in Seattle. (KOMO News)

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Washington commuters will soon have a new way to get to work. The Washington State Department of Transportation is launching the first part-time shoulder lane in the Vancouver-Portland metro area.

When this lane is open, there will be four travel lanes instead of three.

  • Electronic signs over the highway will display whether the part-time shoulder is open to traffic, allowing travelers, including buses, to use the shoulder as a regular travel lane during times with heavy traffic.
  • A green arrow will indicate that the shoulder lane is open, and a red X will indicate when it is closed.
  • Yellow arrows will let drivers know when they need to use caution or exit the shoulder lane.

WSDOT officials believe this will help alleviate traffic at highly congested times of day.

"We're using the shoulder during those times of the day when we have congestion and we need just a little more capacity during the rest of the day," WSDOT Assistant Regional Administrator-Operations and Planning Scott Langer.

Residents in Vancouver are hopeful about the new change.

“With a lot of the traffic that’s starting to happen in areas where there didn’t used to be traffic. Anything to free up space and give more room for cars to go into, I’d say it’s worth a shot,” one Vancouver resident told KATU.

State Route 14 has been under construction for three years with the goal of improving traffic flow during peak commuting times for Clark County travelers.

According to WSDOT, more traffic has been on SR 14 than ever before. The new lanes of travel on both directions of SR 14 between I-205 and Southeast 164th Avenue in Vancouver to help ease congestion, improve travel reliability and support public transit.
