More than a million people visit Grenen in Skagen every year and we understand why. It’s beautiful and raw.

3. Walk around Skagen

Skagen is a pretty and cosy city which is characterized, among other things, by the yellow-coloured houses and white-edged roof tiles.

Because people live here all year round , the city is fun to visit in both autumn, winter, spring and summer – although it’s undoubtedly most alive in the warmer months when holidayers from near and far come and stay for longer.

Stroll around the cobblestoned streets, admire the colourful houses, buy an ice cream and make sure to stop by the scenic harbourfront.

4. Visit the Sand-Covered Church

The Sand-Covered Church (in Danish: Den Tilsandede Kirke ) is one of the most popular tourist spots in Skagen .

If you have read about it in our travel guide to the Sand-Covered Church , you will know that there’s not an actual church buried under the sand.

To be honest, we ourselves thought so before visiting because we hadn’t researched it!

Well, the original church was built in the late 14th century and during the latter part of the 18th century, the church was indeed flooded by sand from the neighbouring sand dunes.

Today, the only remains of the church is the beautifully preserved church tower .

Visiting this landmark in Skagen offers an interesting experience that combines history, nature and cultural intrigue – and the area is great for a walk.

5. Admire Danish art at Skagen’s Museum

Skagen is especially known for two things: wild nature and the artists who have been inspired by it.

The light in the northern tip of Jutland is really something special.

At least that’s what artists like Anna Ancher , Michael Ancher and P.S. Krøyer thought when they settled in Skagen to paint.

Known as “ the Skagen painters ”, they were active in Skagen from the end of the 19th century and their masterpieces of the local landscapes can be seen at the Skagen Museum today.

6. Learn about migratory birds in Skagen’s Grey Lighthouse

If you would like to learn more about the birdlife at Grenen , you should consider stopping by Skagen’s Grey Lighthouse ( Det Grå Fyr in Danish) on your way towards the car park from the city of Skagen.

The 46 metres high Grey Lighthouse has existed since 1858 and it’s still a working lighthouse that can be seen far out at sea.

You can explore the inside of the building which has been renovated and the old rooms have been preserved.

It’s also a centre for migratory birds with an interactive exhibition and a bird observatory.

7. Go back in time at the Skagen Bunker Museum

At the small war museum Skagen Bunker Museum you can explore a real bunker that was used by the Germans as an infirmary for treating wounded soldiers during the Second World War.

Inside the bunker, there are different artefacts like weapons and uniforms as well as an operations room and a film room.

It’s definitely one of the more special attractions in Skagen.

Read more on their website here .

8. See Ancher’s Hus

In Ancher’s Hus, the Skagen painters Anna and Michael Ancher lived with their daughter Helga.

Anna Ancher died in 1935 and their beautiful red house has been preserved as it stood back then.

There are about 250 works of art on the walls in the home of the Ancher family so if you are interested in art, this is a must-visit.

Read more about the museum as well as prices and opening hours at their website .

9. Spot wildlife

Skagen is full of life and Grenen is in fact the place in Denmark where you can spot the most bird species .

Bring your binoculars and look for both birds and marine mammals at sea and on land.

Grey seals are known to sunbathe in the sand close to Grenen and they can be seen all year round. However, you still have to be lucky to find the cute animals.

Porpoises and harbour seals are also very common here and there have been quite a few whale and dolphin sightings.

Skagen Travel Guide: Visit Denmark’s Magical Northern Coastal Town

skagen tourist attractions

The coastal gem of Skagen is, perhaps, Denmark’s best-kept secret! Located at the very top of the country (it is, after all, the northernmost point of the country), Skagen is a charming fishing village that you should definitely add to your itinerary.

The town has an especially relaxing atmosphere, with its cheerful yellow and red houses, soft sandy beaches, and wild nature.

Speaking of which… Skagen is also renowned for its beautiful beaches, like Grenen, where the North Sea meets the Baltic Sea in a breathtaking natural spectacle you definitely shouldn’t miss.

Our Skagen travel guide will go over everything you need to know before your trip, including what to do in Skagen, how to get here, some helpful travel tips, where to stay in Skagen, and much more.

After you travel to Skagen, you’ll see why it’s one of the most popular destinations amongst Danes. 🙂 Let’s check it out!

How to Get to Skagen

While getting to Skagen might take a little effort, it’s well worth it in the end! Here are a few ways on how to travel to Skagen:

By plane | Skagen is a small town that does not have its own airport, so your best option is the nearest airport, which is in Aalborg. There is a regular flight to Aalborg Airport (AAL) from the capital of Denmark (Copenhagen), as well as many capitals in Europe , including Amsterdam (Netherlands), Kaunas (Lithuania), Oslo (Norway), and London Stansted (the UK). In addition, there are seasonal routes from Spain (Malaga, Alicante, Barcelona), USA (Newark), Italy (Naples), and other countries. For the full list, check out our Aalborg City Guide here!

From Aalborg, take the 75 train up to Skagen — click here to plan your trip via the North Jutland Transport Company.

By train | There are a handful of train routes to Skagen, but most require a layover in Aalborg. For example, the journey from Copenhagen to Skagen takes about 6 hours and includes a trip on the InterCity train from Copenhagen to Aalborg, and another train from Aalborg to Skagen. As mentioned above, you’ll most likely be taking the 75 train from Aalborg to Skagen.

By car | There are a few options of traveling to Skagen by car. You can either take the quickest route, which is the E39 road and takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. You can also opt to go through Frederikshavn on the E45, which takes a bit longer but has views of the Danish countryside (and a few peeks of the seaside!)

By bus | There are a few options to travel to Skagen by bus, but they involve multiple stopovers (depending where you’re traveling from) and aren’t the most convenient option. We recommend a different option (such as renting a car or taking the train) in order to get to Skagen.

By ferry | If you’re coming from Sweden, you can take the ferry from Gothenburg to Frederikshavn. From there, it’s a 40-minute train ride on train #75, the same one that goes from Aalborg (mentioned above).

Transportation in Skagen

By car | If you are traveling by car, you can easily explore Skagen and its surroundings by car. Parking is readily available in the city center – just be aware that some of the narrow streets in Skagen’s old town can be tricky to navigate, so consider parking your car in the designated parking lot and exploring the city on foot. Take the car only to further-out attractions like the Migrating Sand Dune or Grenen Beach.

On foot | If you prefer to explore Skagen on foot, you will find it easy to do so as the city is small and compact, with most attractions within walking distance of each other. We recommend grouping together the attractions furthest away (i.e. Grenen Beach and the Skagen Bunker Museum) to make logistics easier.

By bike | You can rent a bike from one of the several bike rentals in the city center. Biking is a popular and convenient way to get around Skagen, and you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the scenic seaside at a leisurely pace. There is a network of paths and parking spaces for bicycles throughout the city, so you will not have any problems with movement and parking. Two of the best companies include Skagen Cykeludlejning and Skagen BikeRental .

Where To Stay in Skagen

There are plenty of accommodations and hotels in Skagen, and you won’t have any trouble finding one that meets your needs and budget – just be sure to book ahead of time, as it gets very popular during summer and the good hotels are quickly sold out!

Because Skagen is a popular summer tourist destination (and has tons of bed & breakfast-style hotels), many accommodations also offer complimentary breakfast – be sure to keep this in mind when planning your trip.

skagen tourist attractions

Skagen Harbour Hotel | Without a doubt, Skagen Harbour is one of the best hotels in Skagen! The beautiful modern rooms are inspired by local landscapes and colors, plus you’ll definitely feel the hygge atmosphere from the moment you step into your room. In short, this is the creme de la creme of hotels and an absolutely delightful experience – no wonder it has a 4.8 out of 5 review on Google. 🙂

skagen tourist attractions

Hotel Plesner | Delightfully minimalist and bright, Hotel Plesner is right next to the city center and within walking distance to the harbor. As a nice bonus, this is one of the hotels in Skagen with complimentary breakfast!

skagen tourist attractions

Hotel Strandly Skagen | An adorable old school hotel that’s family-run and with plenty of character – it feels as if you’re visiting your sailor captain grandpa! Try to find subtle hints of Skagen, such as the posters of the vippefyr or the old wooden barrels used as tables. 🙂

skagen tourist attractions

Hotel Marie | Located right near the harborfront, Hotel Marie is a laidback hotel with all the comforts you could ever need. The rooms are spacious, have plenty of amenities (tea and coffee maker!), and are soundproof. The adorable white shiplap around the room and blue hues are an extra touch that make the hotel feel like it was meant to be in Skagen.

Things to Do in Skagen

skagen tourist attractions

Grenen Beach

Grenen Beach is the most popular tourist attraction in Skagen, and for good reason!

This beach is Denmark’s northernmost point where two seas meet – the Skagerrak (which makes up part of the North Sea) and Kattegat (which the Baltic Sea drains into) – creating a unique natural phenomenon. As a result, many tourists like to come here and stand in two seas at once. Cool, isn’t it?

You can get to Grenen Beach by walking about 4 kilometers (about 50 minutes) from the city center or taking a taxi. Likewise, there is also a parking lot within short walking distance to the beach.

Skagen Bunker Museum

Located 1 kilometer from Grenen Beach is another famous tourist landmark: the Skagen Bunkermuseum! During World War II, this bunker was used as a makeshift hospital to treat wounded German soldiers. Visitors can see the operating room, armory storage, and artifacts from the era (such as original weapons, uniforms, and personal items).

skagen tourist attractions

Skagens Museum

If history isn’t your thing, no worries – there’s also the Skagens Museum. The Skagen Museum features a wonderful collection of works by Danish artists, with a focus on the famous artists of Skagen.

These ‘Skagen painters,’ which included the likes of Anna Ancher, Thorvald Bindesbøll (the man who created the Carlsberg beer logo!), and Peder Severin Krøyer, were heavily inspired by the region’s stunning natural beauty.

This is one of our favorite museums in Skagen, and an excellent introduction to the area to get yourself in the relaxed ‘Skagen mindset’. 🙂

skagen tourist attractions

See the Migrating Sand Dune (Råbjerg Mile)

Råbjerg Mile is, perhaps, one of the most unique landmarks in Denmark – and for good reason! This is a massive sand dune located southwest of Skage and considered to be the largest migratory dune in Northern Europe, moving about 15 meters per year!

Over time, the Migrating Sand Dune will eventually cover the main road to Skagen as it moves northeast. However, the local government does not ‘stop’ (stabilize) the dune from moving because it allows future generations to research dune migration patterns.

You can climb to the ‘top’ of the dunes and enjoy lovely views of the surrounding landscapes – it feels as if you’re in a mini-desert!

skagen tourist attractions

The Sand-Covered Church

While we’re on the topic of the Migrating Sand Dune… As you might have guessed from the name, The Buried Church was one of the landmarks affected by the sand dune. 😉

Built sometime in the 14th century and dedicated to Saint Lawrence of Rome, this church was mostly buried between the 17th and 18th century by the Råbjerg Mile (Migrating Sand Dune) mentioned above. Interestingly, the churchgoers constantly tried to clean the church from sand, but unfortunately the church was officially closed by royal decree in the late 1700s and demolished.

Nowadays, only the church tower is visible – which is still impressive, considering that its height is about 22 meters! Travelers can go inside (entrance is free) and there is a nice view of the surrounding area.

skagen tourist attractions

Ancher’s Hus

If the name Anna Ancher sounds familiar, congratulations – you have a great memory. 😉 We first mentioned her in the Skagens Museum (above), but Anna also has another awesome tourist attraction in Skagen: her house!

This adorable red house is where Anna Ancher lived with her husband, Michael Ancher (also a famous painter), and their daughter Helga — who, you guessed it, was also a painter!

After Helga Ancher died in 1964, the house was taken under guardianship and restored over the next few years. It opened in 1967 as an art collection / museum, exhibiting the Ancher’s collection of more than 200 paintings by various Nordic, British, and Dutch artists.

Besides the art, the Anchers Hus also has lovely timepiece furniture – as you walk through the museum, it feels like you went back in time and are a guest at the Anchers!

skagen tourist attractions

Vippefyr

Located slightly outside of Skagen’s city center, this mechanism was used in ancient times as a beacon for navigation and now serves as a historical maritime attraction for tourists. The original vippefyr was built in 1627 and has been rebuilt many times during its existence. The current vipperfyr is a well-made replica, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting.

skagen tourist attractions

Stroll Around the Historic City Center

Last but certainly not least, don’t forget to enjoy a relaxing stroll around Skagen! There are plenty of things to see, from the colorful houses to the charming cobblestoned streets, but perhaps the best views are from a cafe along the harbor. 😉

The town also brims with old-charm streets and traditional architecture the houses. Many of these structures date back centuries ago. Thus, visitors will glimpse what life was like here long ago.

For tourists chasing rustic views of the sea, stunning sunset, and seemingly tropical landscapes, look no other than Skagen. Here we go.

One could stand in awe and wonder how the Danes built such a majestic and resilient structure during the 16th century.

Skagens Museum

Skagens Museum is technically an art museum, but it’s also ideal for understanding the town’s rich history. Visitors will find paintings of famous artists such as Anna and Michael Ancher, Johansen, and Tuxen Viggo. They are all members of the Skagen Painters Colony.

4. Experience Fishing at Skagen Marina

Skagen Port

The city’s main harbor is Skagen Marina, where different private boats and cruise ships set sail. Since this is the main fishing port in Denmark , expect to see fishing boats come and go. There is a fishing harbor for visitors who would like to try fishing.

This is one of the can’t-miss things to do in Skagen to fully integrate into local life. Several seafood restaurants and cafes also line the harbor. After fishing, visitors can proceed to one of these and feast on sumptuous meals while relishing the surrounding views.

5. Stroll on the Rabjerg Mile

Råbjerg Mile Skagen

Imagine taking a contemplative stroll on a migrating coastal dune. How would that feel, and what kind of experience does it give? Visitors will know that when they check out Rabjerg Mile, which migrates between Frederikshavn and Skagen. It is one of Europe ‘s largest moving dunes!

Visitors can walk to the top of this dune and feel what it’s like to stroll on the Middle Eastern deserts. What’s the good thing here? One does not have to worry about simmering midday heat.

6. Relish the Sights at Flagbakken

One of the most visited spots in Skagen is Flagbakken, which offers some of Denmark’s most scenic views. From here, one can see Skagen’s varied landscapes, including the old and the new sections.

On one side, visitors will see the vast expanse of blue water; on the other, they will see a buried church with many exciting stories to tell.

The whole peninsula is literally within one’s view when at Flagbakken. During some time of the year, thousands of birds descend in the adjacent area, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching.

Hold up! Have you thought about the importance of travel insurance?

Remember this:  anything can happen. Travel is fun, but your health is more important; thus, I always, always, always recommend getting insured during the duration of your trip. I have benefitted from having one multiple times, and it has been covered for thousands of euros!

The latest one is not necessarily “health” related – it was during the peak of the unspeakable terrible C that consumed the world. I was living in Vietnam when I received an email from SafetyWing (my travel insurance) that if I want they’ll fly be back home to Finland as the world goes through a global emergency alert. I flew back fully covered, and dealing with  SafetyWing  was a breeze despite the roar of people in contact with them trying to get back home.

I can’t highly recommend them enough. Otherwise, I rarely get sick; hence I don’t always need to head to a hospital, but knowing that I have travel insurance makes me feel safe at the very least.

Read my post about  why you should get travel insurance  for more information. Otherwise, you can get a free quote from  SafetyWing  – they’re the best, in my opinion.

7. Check out the Natural History Museum Skagen

One of Skagen’s most popular tourist destinations for cultural and historical savvy is the Natural History Museum Skagen – Skagen Nature Center. This museum will give visitors an understanding of the Raabjerg Mile’s history and the formation of the Skagens Odde.

There is also an exhibition to raise awareness about the different mammals inhabiting the North Sea. The museum staff also offers guided tours of the surrounding forests and countryside for a rustic immersion.

8. Visit the Skagen Bunker Museum

Bunker Museum

Another famous museum in town is Skagen Bunkermuseum, which used to be an old German bunker during World War II. Thousands of soldiers who incurred wounds from battles lost their lives here; thus, it comes with an eerie setting.

Visitors would have to pass through a small entrance and climb a ladder to get inside. Inside, they will find operating rooms, a weapon room, film rooms, and crew rooms.

9. Treat yourself at Skagen Fiskerestaurant

Visitors who want to enjoy the best of Denmark’s seafood cuisines should check out Skagen Fiskerestaurant. The servings here consist of freshly-caught seafood, which has been cooked in fascinating ways. Expect superb flavors.

The restaurant has been serving seafood meals for the past 50 years, so many innovations have been made. It’s best to come here with a group so you can have as many dishes as possible. Match the meals with a variety of wines available.

10. Feel like an Artist at Anchers Hus

Skagen Anchers Hus

Anchers Hus is one of the historical landmarks showcasing the rich history of Scandinavian art. It now serves as a museum; previously, it was the residence of painters Michael Ancher and Anna Ancher.

Since the death of Anna Ancher in 1935, the interiors of the museum remain unchanged and untouched. Imagine walking back to when you come here while relishing the beautiful paintings of the said couple.

Visitors will not only appreciate the art but have an understanding of the couple’s lives and works.

These are some of the best things to do in Skagen, Denmark. Of course, there is more. Consider including some or most of these when planning your Denmark itinerary.

What are my favorite travel must-haves?

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of travel, and there are five items that I always carry with me regardless of where I go and how long the trip is. Here are my five travel must-haves!

  • Warm packable jacket  – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
  • Transparent toiletry bag  – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
  • Kindle Paperwhite  – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
  • Powerbank  – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
  • Travel Adapter  – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.

Skagen – Best Things to Do in the Town Where the Seas Meet

Best tourist attractions in Skagen

Skagen is the northernmost town in Denmark. It’s a popular travel destination during the summer but you can visit all year round. Skagen is most famous for being the preferred location of many Danish painters during the 19th century. It also has its trademark yellow houses with red roofs, great seafood restaurants, and a long beach where two seas visibly flow into each other.

This guide will give you all the information you need to know about Skagen. My family comes from this town and I’ll go through the main tourist attractions below + share suggestions for even more things to do in Skagen, including some lesser known sights and attractions. Let’s get started!

  • 2 Den Tilsandede Kirke
  • 3 Skagen Church
  • 4 Museum of Skagen
  • 5 Ancher’s House
  • 6 Vippefyret
  • 7 The Grey Lighthouse
  • 8 The Bunker Museum

Skagen

Grenen is the peak of Skagen – a long sandy beach area and actually the northernmost point of continental Denmark.

The two seas of Skagerrak and Kattegat flow into each other at the peak, and you can watch it happen while standing on the beach!

Due to strong currents and waves, it is not allowed to bathe at this beach, but it is allowed to stand with just the feet in the water. Even though bathing is not allowed, Grenen remains a highly popular tourist spot. The reason is obviously that you can see the two seas flow into each other – but also that you can take long walks and enjoy the fresh air.

How do you get to the top of the beach to watch the two seas? Take the historic bus, Sandormen. It’s a special beach bus that will take you to the peak. By far the best option if you don’t want to walk for 30 minutes in the sand!

And a final thing about Grenen in Skagen: It is the place in Denmark where you can observe the largest variety of bird species . During spring, it is even considered the best place in all of Northern Europe to observe birds of prey, as they will be present in significant numbers.

Den Tilsandede Kirke

Den tilsandede kirke Skagen

Four kilometers southwest of Skagen’s town center, we find one of the most famous attractions in the northern region.

Den Tilsandede Kirke ( The Sand-Covered Church in English) is a very charming site. This old church was built by the end of the 14th century. However, due to the sand deflation by the coast, it started to become partly buried in the 17th century. Originally named Skt. Laurentii Kirke, people eventually had to dig their way in on Sundays, so it ultimately closed for service in 1795.

But nowadays it’s an important tourist attraction in Skagen because of its distinct look. And because of the story, of course. The National Museum of Denmark removed some of the sand blocking the church in 1909, so now you can easily see most of the church, even though the bottom part is still covered with sand. That part has been kept, to maintain at least some of the church’s signature look. H.C. Andersen described the church in his writings and so did many other authors throughout the years.

Visiting The Sand-Covered Church is free and highly recommended!

Skagen Church

Den Tilsandede Kirke is not the only church in Skagen. There is also the central church, which is much newer and still in use on Sundays. Thanks to its tower, it has the appearance of a church, but the yellow color of the outer walls and the red roof make it very reminiscent of any normal house in Skagen. This is simply the way buildings look in this town.

DON’T MISS: Where to Stay in Skagen – Hotel Recommendations

Skagen Church was built to replace the sand-covered Skt. Laurentii church. The location was also a lot better since it is closer to the locals. Talented Danish artists, such as Andreas Paulsen, have provided paintings and sculptures to the interior, so a look inside the church can be very interesting.

Museum of Skagen

Skagens Museum , known as the Museum of Skagen in English, is a popular city museum with over 130,000 annual visitors.

It is considered to be one of the best museums in Denmark. A large part of the collection focuses on Skagensmalerne – the famous painters who lived in Skagen during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. You can see the paintings of Ancher, Krøyer, Tuxen, Johansen, Drachmann and others.

The Museum of Skagen was founded in 1908 and it is located inside the former inn of the Brøndum Hotel. In beautiful settings, you can get acquainted with the artworks of Denmark’s best artists in the realist era. A must-visit museum for any art or culture aficionado who happens to be in Skagen!

It usually opens at 9 am, although some days at 10 am. It usually closes at 17. Stay updated on prices and opening hours on the official website .

Ancher’s House

Speaking about art: A visit to Ancher’s House is also highly recommended.

Arguably, the two most famous painters of the bunch in Skagen were Anna & Michael Ancher . They bought this specific house in 1884 and lived there until they died in 1927 and 1935, respectively. The house remained in the hands of the Ancher family up until 1964. We can only wonder how much great art was created in this house, and how many ideas were discussed there – and that makes it and interesting place to visit.

These days, it is used for exhibitions – so it is practically a small museum. While not as large as the Museum of Skagen, it is very charming and if you truly want to explore the history and the local art, you should absolutely visit Ancher’s House.

Opening hours and entry prices are equal to that of the regular Skagen Museum since they are run by the same organization.

Near the coast, you can take a look at Vippefyret – often referred to in English as Skagen’s Lever Light .

It is a very unique construction that was built to provide a mechanical navigational light to fishermen. It was the first of its kind, and even though the original light is now gone, it is replaced by a replica at the site where the original once stood. As one of Skagen’s many free attractions, it is a good idea to stop by and see the monumental Lever Light up close.

The Grey Lighthouse

Skagen’s Grey Lighthouse is now over 150 years old, but it still remains in service.

It is a famous construction designed by Niels Sigred Nebelong, and until 1952 it was the tallest lighthouse in Denmark . Visitors can enter every day of the year, aside from the days around Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The lighthouse has also become a popular place to go for bird-watching enthusiasts.

The Bunker Museum

When you walk the beaches of Skagen, you will see several bunkers from World War II . During the German occupation, the invading soldiers built bunkers along the coasts of Denmark, and several of them were built on the beaches of Skagen.

These bunkers were originally used as places to stock supplies and treat wounded soldiers. After the war, they were left useless, but eventually, locals decided to turn some of these bunkers into museums.

One of them is the Skagen Bunker Museum . It is privately owned, and not run by the state or the municipality. It gives an introduction to the history of how the bunkers were used during WWII, and there are exhibitions showing uniforms, weapons and artifacts found from the WWII era. Skagen Bunker Museum is season-based and it’s only open between April and October. If you come to Skagen during this time, it makes sense to visit this historical attraction.

The museum is open from 11.00 to 15.00 every day with extended opening hours in the summer. Entry is 60 DKK with reduced rates for children and seniors.

As a side note, there are also empty bunkers standing on the beaches that you can go and have a look at. These are not necessarily part of the museum. Just old leftovers from the past, still standing on the beach.

And there you have it: The end of the article. If you’re visiting the north of Denmark, you should absolutely try to visit these attractions in Skagen. I could easily make the argument that Skagen is the best place to visit in Northern Denmark. The town is very charming, it has beautiful architecture, classic sights, and you will also find some of Denmark’s best seafood restaurants. Along with Ribe in the south, I would say Skagen has the most cultural attractions per capita of any place in the country .

Tourist’s guide to Skagen, Denmark’s northernmost city

Skagen (Denmark) is a small resort town, in the northernmost point of the country. This city is located on the Jutland Peninsula, on Cape Grenen.

Skagen is included in the list of the main fishing ports in Denmark, it provides fresh fish and seafood to residents of the whole country. In addition, this city is recognized as the resort capital of Denmark, and this is largely due to the fact that there are the largest number of sunny days in a year.

Skagen, Denmark

Skagen inhabits about 12,000 people, but during the holidays the number of residents increases many times due to vacationers from Denmark, Germany, Sweden, and Norway.

What is interesting to see in Skagen

Skagen amazes with the number of street cafes that serve excellent fish dishes. There are so many locals, and there are so many tourists in the season that it takes a very long time to expect an empty table. And in the evenings, many people go for a walk on the promenade, where every day exactly at 21:00 the flag is solemnly lowered, and at this time a trumpeter rises to a special platform and plays the trumpet.

But they’re not going to Skagen to sit in a cafe and listen to the trumpeter. This northernmost city of Denmark is known mainly due to Cape Grenen, which merges the two seas – the Baltic and the North.

Cape Grenin

From the tip of Cape Grenin stretches and goes far into the sea, washed over many years by a sand spit. Rather, she goes to the seas. Here, at Cape Grenen in Denmark, the North and Baltic Seas meet. Each of them has its own “salinity”, density and temperature of the water, which is why these waters do not mix, but form a clear and clearly distinguishable border. You can’t swim here, because it is life-threatening – the waves encountered create very strong undercurrents.

Tractor Sandormen

To see this phenomenon, you have to overcome the path of 1.5 km from the parking lot to the edge of the sand spit. If you don’t feel like walking, you can drive a Sandormen tractor with a trailer for 15 kroons.

Cape Grenin also has other attractions. Near the parking lot there is an old German bunker, preserved since the Second World War – it has a museum of bunkers.

Old german bunker

Near the parking lot stands a lighthouse, which is allowed to climb. From it you can clearly see the city of Skagen, Cape Grenin and the sand spit, a place of confluence of the seas.

Old lighthouse Vippefyr

A little aside from the lighthouse there is not quite an ordinary building, the purpose of which is not so easy to guess. This is the old lighthouse Vippefyr, built on Cape Grenin back in 1727. The benchmark for the ships was the fire of a bonfire burning in a large tin barrel, raised high up.

Sand Dune Rabjerg Mile

Among other attractions of Denmark there is another one located in the north of Jutland, between the cities of Skagen and Fredrikshavn. This is the moving sand dune of Rabjerg Mile.

This dune is one of the largest in Europe, its height exceeds 40 m, and the area reaches 1 km². Under the influence of winds, Rabjerg Mile moves to the northeast at a speed of up to 18 m per year.

The wind here is very strong, it easily blows even a person from a place. By the way, unlike some other drifting dunes, Rabjerg Mile is allowed to walk.

The sand dune has already conquered the old church of St. Lawrence built in the 14th century, now known as the “Buried Church” and “The Church Filled with Sand”. People were forced to dig out the entrance to the church before each service, and in 1795 they stopped fighting with the elements – the church became abandoned. Gradually, the sand swallowed the entire first floor, most of the building collapsed, and only the tower has survived to this day.

Skagen church

Almost 50 years after the church of St. Lawrence was finally abandoned in 1795, a new religious building was built in the center of Skagen.

The building is light yellow in neoclassical style. It is characterized by carefully verified symmetry, large windows and a sloping roof made of tiles, typical of Denmark. At the top of the bell tower is an elegant dark green spire with a dial, designed in the Baroque style. A bell was installed on the bell tower, which was delivered from the sandy St. Lawrence Church.

Some interior details and church utensils, such as candle holders and communion bowls, were also transferred from the old temple.

Where to stay in Skagen

Skagen offers a wide range of hotels and other accommodation options.

Accommodation prices start at 65 € per day for two, the average price is at 160 €.

Apartments Krøyers Holiday Apartments

For example, in Krøyers Holiday Apartments, located 4 km from the city center, you can rent a twin room for 64 €. About 90 €, the cost of living in the villa “Holiday Apartment Sct. Clemensvej ”with two double beds. For 170 €, the Hotel Petit hotel, located in close proximity to the main street of the city, offers a double room with one double or two single beds.

How to get to Skagen from Copenhagen

There are many ways to get to Skagen from the Danish capital.

Aalborg Airport, main entrance

The nearest airport is Aalborg, approximately 100 km from Skagen. Airplanes from Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, to Aalborg fly daily, only sometimes there can be up to 10 flights a day, and sometimes only 1. You can see the schedule on the websites of Norwegian and SAS airlines, you can buy tickets on their websites. The cost of the flight is about 84 €, if there is luggage, if only hand luggage, the ticket will cost less. By time, the flight lasts 45 minutes.

Bus number 70

There is an Aalborg Lufthavn bus stop right at the exit from Aalborg Airport. Here you need to take one of the buses No. 12, 70, 71 and go to the Lindholm Station stop, where the bus station and the railway station are located. The ride on the city bus lasts 5-7 minutes, the ticket costs 1.7 € and you can buy it from the driver.

There are no trains going straight from Aalborg to Skagen – at least one change will be required in Frederikshavn. Trains in this direction travel from 6:00 to 22:00, the trip takes 2 hours. The ticket will cost 10 €, you can buy it only in the terminal at the station. By the way, the spelling of city names is different in English and Swedish, for example, “Copenhagen” is written as “København”.

The roads in Denmark are beautiful and completely free. But the path to Skagen goes through the bridge that connects Zeeland and Funen, and you need to pay 18 € for travel on it. To pay, you must adhere to the yellow or blue strip – on the blue you can pay through the terminal using a bank card, on the yellow – in cash.

At the train station in Copenhagen

There are no direct flights from the Danish capital to Skagen, at least one change will be required in Frederikshavn. Although trains depart from Copenhagen to Skagen almost around the clock, you can only get with one change if you leave Copenhagen from 7:00 to 18:00.

You need to get to Frederikshavn at the final stop, the station is small and you can transfer from one train to another in a matter of minutes.

Important: getting on the train, you need to look at the scoreboard and check which cars go to which city. The fact is that wagons are in most cases trailed!

Tickets cost from 67 €. If you buy a ticket with the specified location, then another +4 €. You can purchase tickets:

  • at the box office of the railway station;
  • in the terminal at the railway station (payment is accepted only through a credit card);
  • on the railway website (www.dsb.dk/en/).
