Both Thallis and Guilherme were absolutely amazing. From the first moment to the very last one I felt like I have now friends for life. They took such good care of me on the other hand giving me the much needed space as I booked the tour alone and wanted this as a meditation adventure.

Best of Argentina & Brazil
My mom and I went on this trip together and had the best time. We had at least 2-3 nights in each place with a complete mix of free time to explore on our own and guided tours of both Buenos Aires and Rio when we arrived. We had local guides join us alongside our tour leader in every stop that we went to. The hotels were incredible an in perfect locations so you could walk everywhere!
- In-depth Cultural
Costa Verde Explorer 5D/4N
Sooo nice to not have to worry about booking transfers and hostels myself and just check the app for pickup times! (Just be patient with that, as they're rarely on time, in normal true Brazilian style.) Breakfast wasn't booked on my second hostel, but I let Bamba know through the Trip Plans app and they fixed it. Also, my boat tour was cancelled on Ilha Grande due to the weather but replaced with another one, which I enjoyed anyway, so all good. In Paraty, you must pick up your boat tour ticket at the tour office in town, do that the day you arrive! I didn't think the shuttle transport times were too bad (like the other review says), it's nice to just sit back and relax sometimes. Enjoy!
- 10% deposit on some dates Some departure dates offer you the chance to book this tour with a lower deposit.

This trip was truly amazing! Full of once in a lifetime (maybe!!) experiences, great staff, and the tour group really bonded over the course of the trip. Transportation was efficient and got us to and from safely every time.
Brazil and Argentina with Iguazu Falls 4 Star
What an amazing organisation. Our thanks go out to Wendy, Rose, Sam and Alberto. We never knew who did what, you did it so seamlessly (the phone numbers were a hint). Your daily messages on WhatsApp were so helpful. We would like to express our gratitude and admiration for your team. The prompt reply to any queries we had and the coordination of our pickups and delivery, made our trip extremely comfortable and trouble free. Our thanks to all, Beth and Derick.
Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro: Falls & Footy
Perfect little skim trip of three countries. Loved it
Colonial Coast Adventure 4D/3N
4 days Discovery the Best of Rio de Janeiro
Excellent tour. Really couldn't be happier with the people (guides), the locations we went, the food at the Carretão, the hotel Windsor Excelsior, the drivers, etc. etc. I definitely would recommend this tour with the limited days we had in Rio. Glad I found TourRadar!!!
What people love about Rio De Janeiro Tours
Luma was amazing. The trip was basic, but she made the trip
Guillame and Talus were both both excellent guides, professional, friendly, knowledgeable and open to exchanging stories. Both have good English with Talus's being excellent. The refugios leave something to be desired. The buildings are kept basically clean but are damp. The mattresses were saggy and I suspect the bites we had were bed bugs. We realise, that this is not something that Nattrip is directly responsible for but perhaps sleeping maps would be better and the mattresses removed. The walk was wonderful none the less due to the spectacular environment and guides and is recommended to those happy to have a little discomfort to experience this wonderful landscape.
A great experience. Intrepid leader Javier Buchnann is excellent

Ipanema Beach
The shores of Ipanema Beach, immortalized in the 1960s bossa-nova song, “The Girl from Ipanema,” are a main attraction in Rio. If you stick around after dark, this sophisticated neighborhood offers some of the liveliest nightlife in all of Rio.
Copacabana Beach
The coastal stretch known as Copacabana hosts many modernized kiosks offering Brazilian drinks and delicacies, open-air restaurants, and bars – understandably making it a posh party destination.
Tijuca National Park
This protected natural wonder is the world’s largest urban forest replanted by man, and is home to hundreds of species of plants and wildlife, many of which are threatened by extinction and found only in the Atlantic Rainforest.

What are Machu Picchu’s operating hours?
Machu Picchu is open from 6:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. every day including weekends and holidays.
Which Machu Picchu tour is best for adrenaline seekers?
The Machu Picchu ruins have two on-site hikes: Huayna Picchu Mountain and Machu Picchu Mountain. Both can be combined with a Machu Picchu tour and take 2–3 and 4–5 hours to complete, respectively. For even more adventure, you can hike over multiple days to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail, Lares or Salkantay treks.
Where should I stay if I spend multiple days at Machu Picchu?
Machu Picchu hotel and hostel options are plentiful in Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of the Machu Picchu ruins. Our Top Pick hotels here are:
- 5-Star Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel
- 4-Star El Mapi
- 3-Star Casa Andina Standard Machu Picchu
- 2-Star Waman Hotel
How many days do I need to tour Machu Picchu?
1–2 days. Two days and one night is the best amount of time to tour Machu Picchu at a leisurely pace: one day to arrive by train and another for the tour and return to Cusco. A whirlwind one-day Machu Picchu tour from Cusco is possible but it will be a long 16–17 hour day.
How long is a guided tour of Machu Picchu?
A guided tour of Machu Picchu is 2 hours long. The ruins operate on a one way circuit that leads to the exit of the ruins and re-entry is not allowed with a Machu Picchu general entrance ticket.
What will I see on a Machu Picchu tour?
A tour of Machu Picchu includes stops at the Guardhouse, agricultural zone, main gate, fountains, tower, temple zone, Temple of the Three Windows, astronomical observatory, Sacred Rock, Group of Three Doorways, royal enclosures, Temple of the Condor and storage area. You will also have views of the west agricultural zone and main square while walking through the ruins.

Things to Do in Rio de Janeiro
- Take a morning walk along on the beach. Join frolicking dogs and morning joggers for a pre-breakfast stroll along the uncrowded beach at any time of the year.
- Enjoy a Guaraná above the waves. Try Brazil’s favorite sparkling beverage, made from the red Amazonian Guaraná berries, as you sit above the waves below the morro de Leme, the big rock at the eastern end of Copacabana in the neighborhood of Leme.
- Climb to the top of the “rock of Leme” for a panoramic view of Copacabana & Praia Vermelha (“red beach”) as well as views of Sugarloaf Mountain just hundreds of meters away.
- Visit the military museum. At the other end of Copacabana, the Forte de Copacabana, the relaxed military outpost and lifeguard training center hosts an interesting military museum as well as a more sophisticated café. Here, enjoy views of the entire beach with Sugarloaf in the background.
- Enjoy a night of stars. Your tour of Rio de Janeiro is not complete without a view of Copacabana by night. Finish your day at one of the kiosks on the beachside of Avenida Atlântica.
Rio de Janeiro has been the star city of Brazil for quite some time. Even the 2016 Olympic Games were hosted in Rio. For more inspiration, view all of our Brazil Tours .

- All Things To Do
Christ the Redeemer Christ the Redeemer
This iconic landmark is a must-see attraction in Rio. Recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, this statue of Jesus Christ stands with arms outstretched to the city from above Corcovado Mountain's staggering 2,310-foot elevation.
Started in 1922 and completed in 1931, the monument – made of concrete and covered in soapstone mosaic tiles – stands 124 feet tall as a religious and cultural symbol of the Brazilian people's warm and welcoming culture. The monument rests atop Corcovado Mountain in the Tijuca National Park and is the most famous attraction in Rio de Janeiro, visited by nearly 2 million people each year. Recent travelers recommend visiting on a day with clear skies since the vantage point is the best in the city. Many also advise going as early as possible to avoid the crowds.
Tijuca National Park Tijuca National Park
U.S. News Insider Tip: After a day of hiking, head over to Os Esquilos ("The Squirrels"), the national park's only restaurant. Visit between May and October when Rio's temperatures drop to enjoy fondue paired with red wine next to the roaring log fire. – Sarah Brown
Outdoorsy types love exploring this expansive green rainforest. Covering more than 9,600 acres, Tijuca National Park sits within the Atlantic Forest and is one of the largest urban forests on the planet. The natural beauty of the park can't be understated: it features varied terrains, waterfalls, caves and more than 1,600 plant species and more than 300 different species of mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles.
Jardim Botânico Jardim Botânico
Spread out across more than 350 acres, this botanical paradise awes its visitors with more than 7,000 indigenous and exotic species of flora. This serene garden hosts everything from orchids to Amazonian trees to large ferns, and is a haven for wild animals such as marmosets, frogs and tropical birds. The gardens were originally created in 1808 by Regent Prince D. João to acclimatize spices from other regions. Since its debut to the public in 1822, the verdant sanctuary has become a haven for locals and tourists; Albert Einstein even dropped in. The national park is also known as a premier botany and ecology research center.
Travelers relish the garden's tranquility, the abundance of nature, and recommend taking guided or self-driven thematic tours of the park's various sections. The park also includes a playground, souvenir shop and the Garden Café restaurant.

Boat Tours Boat Tours
With its iconic coastline and mountainous backdrop, Rio de Janeiro is best explored from the water. Boat tours offer a unique perspective of the city, giving visitors opportunities to admire its stunning beaches, islands, and landmarks from a different angle. There's a variety of boat tours to suit different preferences, including daylong boat tours and scuba diving excursions.
A scuba diving trip takes about five hours. Trips usually go to Cagarras Island – just off the coast of Ipanema – or to Arraial do Cabo – east of Rio. Those who have never dived before will get a quick lesson from experienced divers and will be accompanied in the water by a guide during their entire swim. Qualified divers can go ahead and enjoy the underwater biodiversity. Rio Natural Ecotourism and Itaway Eco Tours are two favorite vendors among tour-takers. Prices start at $130 per person.
Lapa Lapa free
If you come to Rio to revel in samba and other Brazilian music, Lapa is the place for you. This festive neighborhood ignites at night when locals swing their hips and sip on delectable cocktails. Brimming with rows of botecos (typical Brazilian bars), clubs and live music venues, Lapa's seductive night crawl certainly isn't lacking excitement or charm.
You'll definitely want to check out Rio Scenarium , the most popular Brazilian club that features three stories, vintage decor and a long list of craft cocktails. Other popular bars and nightclubs include Leviano , known for its variety of music ranging from samba to forró , and Armazém do Senado , a lively bar with live music where visitors spill out into the street, especially on Saturday afternoons.
Ipanema Beach Ipanema Beach free
U.S. News Insider Tip: At the end of the day, go to Arpoador at the far end of Ipanema near Copacabana to watch the sunset next to the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers Mountains). Locals clap as the last slither of sun dips behind the horizon. – Sarah Brown
Made famous by the well-known bossa nova song, "The Girl from Ipanema," this beach has drawn tourists for decades. The 1.5-mile stretch of sand boasts gorgeous mountain views, beautiful Brazilians and cobalt waters. While sunbathing, you'll observe wildly entertaining games of futevolei (the Brazilian version of volleyball without hands) and smell coalho cheese with oregano grilling nearby on skewers.
Escadaria Selaron Escadaria Selaron free
One of the most iconic landmarks in Rio de Janeiro is the Escadaria Selarón, or Selarón Steps, a 250-step staircase decorated with more than 2,000 carefully placed tiles from around the world. It was created by Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón who began the project in 1990 of transforming a run-down outdoor staircase in Rio's downtown into one of the city's most photographed masterpieces. Dedicating hours of life to what he referred to as a tribute to Brazilian people, Selarón was found dead on his steps in 2013 (the exact cause of his death has not been disclosed). Today, the landmark has appeared in fashion magazines, music videos and films and continues to be one of the city's most visited icons. Best of all, it's free to visit.
Recent visitors said it was a must-see and a great spot for photos, even though it can get a bit crowded. Some travelers said the steps themselves are safe, however, it's recommended to keep belongings close while wandering in the surrounding area to avoid pickpocketing.
Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar)
U.S. News Insider Tip: After visiting the Sugarloaf, unwind at the neighboring picturesque Praia Vermelha beach and then head over to the nearby Mureta, a bay-side wall in Urca where locals gather to watch the sunset and socialize the night away. – Sarah Brown
Standing high above Rio's bustling metropolis at 1,296 feet, Pão de Açúcar, or the Sugarloaf Mountain, cascades over the picturesque Guanabara Bay. From Praia Vermelha (Red Beach) in the residential Urca district, you can take a three-minute cable car ride up to Morro da Urca and then hop on another cable car up to the top of Sugarloaf. From the glass-enclosed bondinho (cable car), you'll get a dazzling view of the city, the sea and Rio's tree-covered mountains.

Pedra da Gávea Pedra da Gávea free
Amid Rio's vibrant cityscape stands Pedra da Gávea, an adventure-lover's dream. This iconic granite peak stands more than 2,700 feet above sea level, providing stunning panoramic views of the city, ocean and the Atlantic Forest. It's a hike that's not for the faint-hearted, but the rewards are worth the effort – recent visitors describe it as "amazing" and "incredible" but warn it's a tough hike. It takes about five hours up and back down (although it can take longer depending on which viewpoints you visit), and involves a mix of steep ascents, rocky terrain and some rope-assisted sections. Hiring a local guide is recommended for safety and navigation, even if you're an experienced hiker. Always check the weather forecast before you go, as the trail becomes slippery during the rain.
The views from the summit are breathtaking and let you see some of Rio's famous sites including the Christ the Redeemer statue, Sugarloaf Mountain , and the golden coastline. On the way back down, don't forget to visit the Garganta do Céu ("The Sky's Throat") for a unique perspective of Rio's coastline. Also keep an eye out for the Cabeça do Imperador ("The Emperor's Head"), a natural rock facade shaped like a face and an abundance of wildlife (think: monkeys, toucans and various plant species).
Prainha Prainha free
Known as Brazil's "little" beach, this remote paradise sits about 22 miles west of Ipanema Beach but is well worth the jaunt. Prainha's magnificent shoreline features a backdrop of rolling hills and verdant rainforest. Surfers covet the killer waves – Prainha is a beloved spot among the surfing community – while beachgoers marvel at the gorgeous sunsets. The shore empties out during the weekdays (particularly during Brazil's winter, which is June to September), making Prainha a great alternative to other tourist-laden beaches. However, swimmers and surfers take note: currents are strong and there are no lifeguards.
Recent travelers love the quieter, more local vibe at Prainha, especially in the offseason. The beach boasts plenty of sunbathing spots during the week and is lined with kiosks selling snacks and drinks. There is also a restaurant nearby called Mirante da Prainha, ideal for oceanic views and Brazilian food. The best way to get there is by car (either taxi or Uber is recommended), as there are no direct public transport options. There is parking space for cars which is informally manned by local car attendants, meaning the cost may vary but is about 15 reais ($3) according to recent travelers, who also recommend getting there early to get a spot.
Pedra do Telégrafo Pedra do Telégrafo
U.S. News Insider Tip: Make sure to visit the Wild Beaches after your trip to Pedra do Telégrafo. These stunning beaches are often completely deserted and feature white sand and lush forest backdrops. Check out Perigoso, Funda, Inferno and Meio beaches. – Sarah Brown
Located in the Atlantic Forest, Pedra do Telégrafo is a popular hiking destination for travelers seeking breathtaking views and memorable photo opportunities. This famous peak has gained worldwide fame for its gravity-defying photos that make it appear as though you're hanging off a rocky precipice over a sheer drop. Don't worry though – there's a solid rock platform beneath. The photos are all about perspective.
Copacabana Beach Copacabana Beach free
One of Rio's most popular shores, Copacabana is a public beach located in the heart of the luxurious Zona Sul neighborhood. The beach is marked by postos , or lifeguard stands, that offer changing rooms and restrooms for a small fee (less than $1). Copacabana's 2.5-mile stretch of sand runs from Posto 3 to Posto 6, where you'll find a peninsula that houses the Historical Museum of the Army and Copacabana Fort.
Brimming with authentic eats, lavish accommodations and the beautiful Avenida Atlântica sideway made of mosaic tiles in a wave motif, Copacabana Beach boasts much more than powdery sands. Recent visitors said it was a must-visit beach and commented on how many people practice sports there at all times of day. Others commented on petty theft that may occur on the beach and recommended keeping belongings in sight and close by. You'll see runners and cyclists making the most of the cycle path that runs alongside the beach from the crack of dawn until well into the evening. The beach is also a hotspot for beach volleyball and football (soccer) at all times of day.
Santa Teresa Santa Teresa free
U.S. News Insider Tip: Don't miss Parque das Ruínas , a restored historical building with exposed brickwork and stunning views across Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf and Rio's downtown. Check out the gallery of contemporary, local art there too. Best of all, it's free. – Sarah Brown
This hilly bohemian district boasts an eclectic array of art and architecture. Strolling along Santa Teresa's cobblestone streets, you'll be enchanted by sidewalk mosaics, palatial mansions and artsy galleries. Conveniently situated just southwest of Lapa , this neighborhood offers traditional Brazilian restaurants, bars and craft stores.

Barra da Tijuca Barra da Tijuca free
Barra da Tijuca, which includes an expansive 11-mile stretch of coastline and adjacent shopping center, is a neighborhood known as "Barra" and is popular among Cariocas. Recent travelers say its beach has a more relaxed environment than the sands at Copacabana and Ipanema and is more local and less crowded. They also say it's an ideal spot for walking, running and cycling. You can also find places to do surfing lessons, one of the most favorite pastimes of a Carioca. Along the shore, you'll find plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants, as well as kiosks selling coconut water, alcoholic drinks and typical Brazilian cuisine
The adjacent shopping center, Barra Shopping, is Brazil's largest commerce complex, featuring retail, entertainment, dining and business centers totaling more than 700 stores. Hours for shops and other stores vary within the center, although the mall itself opens Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m. Check Barra Shopping's website (written in Portuguese) for more information.
Grumari Beach Grumari Beach free
You won't find beachfront restaurants, luxurious hotels or plentiful kiosks here. Without them, you'll have space to stretch out on the 1.5 miles of white and red sand. Part retreat for sun-seekers, part environmental reserve, this lovely beach is a way away from the swooning tourists at Copacabana and Ipanema (about 25 miles).
Travelers rave about Grumari Beach's cleanliness and natural beauty but note that the trek there may take you awhile. Recent visitors said that even though the beach is about an hour's drive from the city, it's a hidden gem worth checking out. Some travelers warn that cell phone reception isn't great, meaning calling for a ride back can be a bit tricky. They also mentioned that the sea can be quite rough, so take care if you go swimming, especially as there are no lifeguards in the area.
Ilha Fiscal Ilha Fiscal
Set apart from the bustling sights and sounds of central Rio, this remote neo-Gothic castle rests on a tucked away island in Guanabara Bay. Completed in 1889 and once a prime location for the Brazilian custom service for supervising port operations, Ilha Fiscal now serves as an illuminated city gem. It was once known for being the venue of the event that was known as "The Last Ball of the Empire," which was held just days before the Proclamation of the Republic.
The castle was reopened in July 2023 following 18 months of restoration and now includes several historical exhibitions and the Galeota D. Joao VI, the oldest vessel preserved in Brazil and used by the Portuguese royal family.
Metropolitan Cathedral Metropolitan Cathedral free
Located in Rio's downtown, the Metropolitan Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St. Sebastian of Rio de Janeiro, is a unique masterpiece and a must-see for those interested in architecture. Designed by architect Edgar Fonseca, it's a striking example of modernist architecture, with its cone-shaped dome standing at 246 feet and resembling the Mayan pyramids. It's decorated with colorful stained-glass windows that encircle the structure and create a wonderful play of light inside, which many recent travelers say is beautiful to see. Construction of the cathedral began in 1962 and the first mass was celebrated there ten years later.
The interior has minimal decor, but has an impressive display of religious art. The main door, known as the Door of Faith, is decorated with 48 bronze high-reliefs, and the church holds a large collection of sculptures, paintings, statues and space for a choir and an organ.

Rio de Janeiro Tours Guide: How to Choose Yours
Wanna experience Rio like a local? Then you will want to read this guide for the best Rio de Janeiro tours.
The salt-tinged breeze, the lively music, and the colorful streets make Rio a sensory overload, or better put, Brazil at its best!
There is so much to see, learn, and experience in this vast city. And even if you see it by yourself, what are the stories behind those landmarks? Why are they important to our country? For these and other questions, it is essential to have a local guide.
As a Brazilian who can call Rio her second home, I wrote this guide about the best Rio tours to help you choose the one that suits your needs the best.
Some of the activities I will talk about are a helicopter tour, an ethical favela tour, and a city tour, to name a few. Oh, and I also included what places they cover and what they offer at the tour price.
This way, you can pick the right tour for you that shows or covers precisely what you want to learn about the city.
Looking for incredible tours in Rio de Janeiro? Read on!
My favorite Rio de Janeiro tours
Here are my favorite tours in Rio, but I talk about each one in detail further in the article.
Why should you go on day tours in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
As a cultural melting pot, Rio de Janeiro has mesmerizing sights, and moving stories spread throughout the city.
From the Christ the Redeemer Statue watching over Rio to the bohemian Santa Teresa neighborhood filled with street art and unpretentious bars to high-end hotels in Ipanema, Rio is the quintessential Brazilian experience.
The city is not only ridiculously exciting but also vast. As I said before, there are a lot of fascinating and moving stories to learn from locals.
If you don’t know the city well, it might be difficult to find off the beaten path places or even understand the history behind popular attractions.
That’s where a Rio de Janeiro tour can come in handy. You visit and learn about many spots in the city from a local point of view.
Where are those tours taking place
All of the tours I will talk about in this article take place in Rio de Janeiro City. If you’re interested in trips around Rio de Janeiro State, you will want to read my complete guide on day tours from Rio.
Visiting other cities in Brazil? Then check out this page with the best tours in Brazil .
Who should take a Rio de Janeiro City tour
- People who don’t have much time to plan their trip to the city, to research significant sites, or couldn’t find enough information online. (Many websites are only in Portuguese.)
- People who want to have a better understanding of Rio de Janeiro, its history, and local culture.
- Tourists who want to learn about major Brazilian landmarks from a passionate local.
- Visitors who don’t feel safe enough to visit a few spots in the city and would rather have a knowledgeable local showing them around.
- Tourists who are interested to learn how life in a favela is and their struggles by a resident.
- People who know how passionate we Brazilians are about soccer and want to experience first-hand a soccer match in the country.
- Visitors who are traveling with friends and would love to have a unique experience in Rio by flying over the city in a helicopter.
What types of tours in Rio de Janeiro are available
As a great diverse city, there are tours in Rio de Janeiro for all interests and tastes.
- Highlights tour with traditional lunch.
- Rio’s highlights tour by helicopter–perfect for groups!
- Favela tour in Santa Marta.
- Soccer match with a local.
- History tour in Downtown.
- A laid-back day covering some of Rio’s highlights and Tijuca National Park.
How long does the average Rio de Janeiro tour guide last
Most tours in Rio last between 4-8 hours, so you will want to reserve a day or half a day to discover the city with a guide.
Still, the tours that last the least in this article are the favela tour (2 hours) and the helicopter tour (30-60 minutes).
What is included in these Rio de Janeiro tours
All of the tours I will talk about have an English speaking guide (sometimes Spanish too), and most offer transportation between sites, which can either be with their private van/car or public transport.
Beyond that, these tours also include admission tickets to the attractions they visit, but don’t expect them to pay for your food or drinks. (However, two of them do pay for that!)
Things to consider when choosing your Rio de Janeiro sightseeing tour
1. Consider what you want to see and do in the city: visit major tourist attractions? Have a once-in-a-lifetime experience while flying over Rio? Ethically learning about the favelas from a resident? Or learning about Rio’s history?
2. Decide how much time you have left to go on a tour and what time would suit you best. Do you have only a morning, afternoon, or the whole day?
3. Determine whether or not you want to learn about local history. Some tours include a thorough explanation of the locations and sites, while others are focused on food, street art, etc.
4. Pick wisely the time you’re traveling to Brazil. Summer, winter, and carnival are the busiest times in the country. If possible, try to plan your trip outside these time frames to avoid crowds and higher rates, unless you want to celebrate the carnival in Brazil, of course! Can’t change your plans? Then you will want to book your tour in advance as it might book out.
Local tips to get the most out of your day
- Always bring money with you to buy souvenirs, food, or drinks.
- Wear sneakers as most tours involve walking in this hilly city.
- Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly.
- Wear sunscreen. Always.
Best Rio de Janeiro tours for every kind of traveler
Here’re my top picks for the best tours in Rio:
Full-Day Tour with Christ, Sugarloaf, Selaron and BBQ Lunch
This Rio de Janeiro City tour is an award-winning experience that covers all the highlights of the city.
The knowledgeable guide takes you to Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, Selarón Steps, and the Metropolitan Cathedral, to name a few places.
Beyond that, the local guide takes you to a steakhouse for lunch so that you can recharge your energy for the rest of the tour, which takes about 8-9 hours in total.
It’s a complete experience in Rio!
Perfect for: Tourists who want to experience Rio entirely and get to learn about the main sights in the city. Visitors who wish to experience the local food too.
This tour includes:
- Pickup and drop off at the hotel
- English or Spanish speaking guide
- Transportation between sites
- Admission tickets to Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain
- Lunch at a Brazilian steakhouse (excl. drinks)
Good to know: Pickup and drop off are included in the tour price, but only for tourists staying in hotels in the southern neighborhoods of Rio.
Check current prices for the highlights tour in Rio
Rio de Janeiro: 30 or 60-Minute Highlights Helicopter Tour
I said it before, but I will repeat it because I genuinely believe in it: Rio is absurdly beautiful!
This beautiful city is a perfect example of how nature and urban centers can coexist, and that’s what makes a helicopter tour so unique.
Here, the pilot takes you on a 30 or 60-minute flight over Rio de Janeiro. At the same time, you have a bird’s eye perspective of the major attractions, such as Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, Copacabana, and more.
Then you’ll understand why Rio’s landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Anyway, this helicopter tour is exceptional and maybe a good moment to propose to your significant other, if this is a romantic trip to Brazil.
Perfect for: Group of friends (up to 3) who want to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience together and see one of the world’s prettiest cities from above.
- English speaking guide
Good to know: There is no pickup or drop off included, so you must go to the airport yourself. Take an Uber there. It’s very affordable.
Favela Santa Marta Tour with a Local Guide
I will be honest with you. I haven’t taken this tour myself. And honestly, I struggled for a long time trying to understand how it would be ethical to visit a favela without treating locals like animals in a safari.
But after long research, I came to understand that this favela tour has a favela resident as the guide, who respectfully shows around the community, and donates part of the tour earnings to help the community.
Again, this is not a jeep tour ( Yes, there exist jeep favela tours…ridiculous to say the least ), but a respectful walking tour in a favela where you learn about the local history, the resident’s struggles, and let your guide break favela’s stereotypes imposed by mainstream media.
The guide takes you inside the favela without being intrusive. It also shows you famous spots, such as the places where Queen Elizabeth II and Michal Jackson have been to.
Perfect for: Visitors who want to learn about a favela with a local resident without being intrusive or disrespectful.
- English speaking, local guide
Good to know: When booking your favela tour, ask the guide in advance if they are taking donations and bring the things you’re not using anymore. For example, books, school material, toys, etc. They don’t take money as a donation, though.

Maracanã Soccer Game Experience with a Local
If you have ever heard how passionate Brazilians can be about soccer, you have an idea of how fantastic it is to watch a match in the country.
And that’s exactly what this tour offers, namely, tickets to a soccer match with a local in the “soccer temple,” aka Maracanã.
The local guide picks you up (and drops you off later) at your accommodation and takes you to the stadium, where you will experience 90 minutes of pure passion.
I took my Dutch husband to the stadium, and I have to tell you…he simply LOVED it!
Perfect for: Tourists of all ages who want to feel the contagious Brazilian passion for soccer in one of the world’s greatest stadiums.
- Spanish or English speaking guide
- Pickup and drop off at your accommodation
- Entrance ticket to the game
Good to know: The stadium is wheelchair accessible. Also, there is a chance it will be crowded, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and to leave big purses or backpacks in your hotel.

Rio: Historical Walking Tour
There is so much of Rio’s history that most tourists know nothing about. For that reason, I thought this was an essential tour I could not leave out of this list.
The knowledgeable guide will introduce you to the beautiful architecture, historical sights, and lots of untold stories in the heart of Rio.
Some of the highlights of the tour are the Cinelândia region, Candelária Church, Municipal Theater, Igreja de São Francisco da Penitência, and the lavish Confeitaria Colombo.
Perfect for: Tourists who don’t know much about Rio’s history and want to have a better understanding of Brazilian history and culture.
- Small-group tour
- Subway tickets
- Entrance fees
Good to know: This walking tour requires at least two participants.

Wonders of Rio: Christ, Selaron Steps, and Tijuca Forest
Similar to the first tour on this list, this Rio de Janeiro City tour also shows the highlights of the town.
However, it covers fewer places in a laid-back day, which also takes you to Tijuca National Park and São Conrado Beach.
Tijuca park is a fantastic rainforest in the city, where you can spot not only incredible wildlife but also waterfalls.
It is an excellent tour for an even better price!
Perfect for: Tourists who want to see some of the highlights of Rio without breaking the bank.
- English and Spanish speaking guide
- Pickup from your hotel
- Transportation between attractions
- Admission tickets to Christ the Redeemer
Good to know: You might want to bring a bug repellent because you will enter a rainforest.

Here’s what you can expect from each day of this Brazil Amazon tour from Rio.
Arrival to Manaus, Brazil
The city of Manaus is in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest. While flying in today, make sure to look out the window for your first unforgettable view of the green carpet of the rainforest below. Depending on the time of your arrival, once you have settled into your accommodation in Manaus, the rest of your day is free to explore the city at the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon on your own. We recommend visiting the beautiful Amazonas Theater and Opera House. As well as the lively Adolpho Lisboa Market where you can indulge in the sweet fruits of the Amazon. Tonight, head out to one of the local restaurants in Manaus where you can enjoy fresh and locally caught fish straight from the Amazon. Included: Private transfer from the airport to your hotel; Accommodation in Manaus. (Meals – None) Show more
Into the Amazon
You will embark on your adventure from Manaus, the city at the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon , and take a boat to see the Meeting of the Waters. This famous sight is where the almost black waters of the Rio Negro and the brown, sandy ones of the Rio Solimões meet up. Due to the difference in temperature, speed, and density, these waters run side by side for over 3 miles before mixing. This is just the appetizer to the rest of your Amazon experience.
You’ll feel the excitement build as you continue your journey deeper into the Amazon where you’ll be able to spot wildlife on the banks and in the river. You’ll pass by local villages for a glimpse of what life is like in the Amazon before finally arriving at your Amazon lodge.
Have some lunch, take a siesta, or just listen to the sounds of the Amazon before you start the afternoon excursions. You might particularly enjoy a guided canoe trip through the Igarapes (Amazon waterways) and Igapos (flooded forests) near to the lodge. It is a great introduction to the wildlife abound, and the Amazon’s flora and fauna living on your doorstep.
Following an action-packed day, you can relax at your lodge over drinks and dinner before falling asleep to the sounds of the wildlife around you.
Note: Activities may vary upon the selected lodge.
Included: Private transfer to the port; Activities at the lodge, Accommodation in the Amazon (Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).
Exploring the Amazon
Rise and shine bright and early, trust us it’s worth it to watch the sunrise and the jungle come alive! The very early morning is the best time to spot many of the rainforest’s wildlife inhabitants and is also before the heat and humidity of the day kicks in.
After sharing your breakfast with some curious monkeys while listening to the beautiful soundtrack of the rainforest, you’ll go on a hike through the jungle. Here your knowledgeable local guide will be on hand to help you spot wildlife and introduce you to the forest’s medicinal plants.
Following lunch back at the lodge and having freshened up there’s plenty more to explore – so what are you waiting for, it’s time for a spot of fishing with a difference. Today’s catch of the day is piranha! Despite their man-eating reputation, these toothy fish usually feast on fallen fruit instead of people. So you’ll sometimes even see the guides and locals happily swimming in these waters.
Your friends back home don’t need to know you had your hands and legs firmly inside the canoe. On the way back to your lodge, keep your eyes out for friendly pink and grey river dolphins that will happily swim alongside your canoe.
Jump back in the boat after dinner for a little game of “Find the Caiman/Alligator” during a twilight river excursion. Look out for owls, capybaras, and of course the glistening eyes of caimans and alligators. The professional guide will pick up some of the smaller ones to give you a closer look before letting it go about its nightly business.
Feeling brave after fishing for piranha? If you’re feeling up for it and depending on the size of the alligator or caiman, your guide may give you the chance to hold it as well!
As we mentioned before, it doesn’t get much more exciting than Amazon tours in Brazil.
Included: Activities at the lodge, Accommodation in the Amazon (Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).
Meeting the Locals
On day four of your Brazil Amazon tour, you’ll get to know the locals a little better. Here’s what you should expect.
Slept well after last night’s twilight river excursion? Then this morning, set out for a local village to meet with some families. Now is an excellent time to get your questions answered about how they live their lives and have adapted to this environment as well as the challenges they face living in the Amazon. You’ll also see how a lot of the foods and goods, such as cassava, rubber, Brazil nuts, and herbs, are produced.
Cassava is one of the main staples in the Northern Brazilian diet and is usually eaten with rice and beans or fish. Your expert guide will be on hand to translate and explain a little more about the different uses of some of the plants native to the Amazon. Including those used for medicinal, culinary, and hunting purposes.
Then it’s time to return to the adventure lodge for lunch before taking the afternoon to relax. Gently swinging in a hammock, listening to the sounds of the jungle and perhaps even spotting some wildlife at the lodge.
Travel to Magical Rio
At the designated time, you’ll head back to Manaus airport for your flight to Rio. If you have the morning free, feel free to relax, or create your own adventure. Our guides are always ready to point out some fun activities in each area.
Landing in Rio de Janeiro, our local representative will be waiting for you at the airport to greet and take you to your hotel. Once you’ve settled into your accommodation in Rio, the rest of the day is free to explore some of our favorite local spots.
Stroll along the long boulevards next to the beaches of Ipanema, Leblon, and of course Copacabana while humming the song, Girl from Ipanema’. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of huts selling delicious freshly squeezed juices and coconuts. These will refresh you as you soak up the breathtaking cityscape of Rio de Janeiro and realize why the city is known as The Marvelous City’!
Relax and watch the sunset at the beach before going out for dinner at one of the restaurants along the promenade. We recommend trying one of Brazil’s most famous and traditional dishes, feijoada carioca (a stew of beans with beef and pork served with white rice and farofa). Washed down with a refreshing caipirinha cocktail or a local beer Brahma and Skol are our favorites! Following dinner, you can go back to your hotel to relax or go to one of the local samba bars to dance the night away!
Included: Transfer to the airport, Private transfer from Rio Airport to Hotel with English speaking driver; Accommodation in Rio. (Meals – Breakfast).
Rio like a local
A trip to Rio isn’t complete without some of the fantastic activities in store for you on day six of your Amazon Brazil tour.
The tour starts at 9 am at the meeting point: in front of the famous “Copacabana Palace Hotel”, an icon of the ’30s / 40’s golden Copacabana years. After learning a bit about this place, you will walk a few blocks to get to the Subway Metro Station, main´s Carioca´s transport around the city every day. You will then reach the Municipal Theatre built on an eclectic style, located in the center of the city.
A few blocks away, you will find and jump in the Bondinho Santa Teresa, a cable car built in 1872 that runs on the top of an old aqueduct called Arcos da Lapa. After a few stations, we reach the bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa, passing by many old antique mansions. You will find the Parque das Ruinas (closed on Mondays) here. This old Palace ruins was rebuilt and became the center of many arts and cultural activities of the city with panoramic views in all its splendor.
If clouds allow, you will see from here the City Center, Sugarloaf, Guanabara Bay, and many others. A few Kodak moments later, you will get to the Celeron Colorful Stairs, a cultural main spot in the Lapa neighborhood, the core of the Carioca´s nights. Finally, you will enjoy the Confiteria Colombo, an old Art Nouveau coffee store from the latest 1800, chosen as one of the ten most beautiful coffee stores in the world (closed on Sundays).
When this visit is over, you will either be dropped at the Sugarloaf to get into the cable car or take the metro back to the Copacabana Palace where the tour ends. Our guide will give you directions on how to get to Christ the Redeemer by yourself in the afternoon. Or we can pre-buy your Christ the Redeemer entrance fee as availability can be scarce during some periods.
Following the tour and returning to your hotel or heading straight for the beach, the rest of the day is free to spend at leisure. Tonight, keep to the beachside restaurants and feast on a long list of salgadinhos (finger food) such as fried cod cakes. All washed down with a nice cold caipirinha. Be careful though, their sweet and smooth taste packs quite a punch, so drink them with caution!
Included: Private excursion with Guide and Public Transportation; Accommodation in Rio. (Meals – Breakfast).
Day at Leisure
Every good Rio de Janeiro adventure has some downtime to relax and take in all the beautiful sights and smells this wonderful city has to offer. However, if you’d like to explore even more, we have an optional day tour available to you.
This is a day at leisure or you can take our optional tour – Backgrounds of Carnival. Rio is internationally recognized for its grandiose Carnival Parade and Samba. But only a few people really know how the parades are made. With this tour, you will get to know the origins of this world-known festivity. Visit the Sambadrome (Carnaval stadium) and its cultural center; the revitalized port area where the samba has its roots, including a visit to the charming port area neighborhood of Morro da Conceicao.
Take a stroll through an old hidden historical area – nowadays full of artists and ateliers. See the historical site Pedra do Sal, where the samba started. And familiarize yourself with the African-Brazilian culture, the period of slavery, and all the pillars that have supported the modern-day Carnival.
Undoubtedly the highlight of the tour is the visit to a samba school atelier. Here you can experience how the carnival in Rio is being done behind the scenes. Including the impressive and gigantic work of designing and building all the magnificent floats that will be used in the famous parade at the Sambadrome during carnival.
Included: Accommodation in Rio. (Meals – Breakfast).
Flight to the Falls
Iguazu Falls Brazil is your destination for the eighth day of your adventure tour. Your private transfer will take you to Rio airport for your trip to the falls. Upon arrival at Foz do Iguacu’s Airport, you’ll dive straight into the action and waste no time as your transfer and guide picks you up to begin your tour of the Brazilian side of the Falls.
To make the most of your time at the Natural World Wonder of Iguaçu Falls and to explore the Brazilian side of the Falls you’ll first have a private guided tour of the Brazilian side. Then you’ll be taken to your hotel in the town of Foz do Iguacu on the Brazilian side of the Falls.
The Iguazu Falls border Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay and today you’ll have a private guided tour of the Brazilian side. Amidst a vibrant jungle of exotic trees and colorful butterflies, the Brazilian side offers a more panoramic view of the falls. As well as an up-close and direct view of Iguaçu’s largest waterfall that stands at over 262 ft.
Ominously known as the Garganta del Diablo (or Devil’s Throat), this is the waterfall that made Eleanor Roosevelt say, “Poor Niagara…” If you want to experience the falls from above you can organize an Iguazu Helicopter Ride; just make sure to mention it at the start of the day so that your private guide can make time for it.
Note: In case you have an evening flight into Foz do Iguacu, we will schedule the Brazil excursion on Day 3 before your flight out of Foz do Iguacu.
Included: Private transfer from your hotel to Rio Airport, Private excursion with Transport, Guide and Entrance fee from the airport; Accommodation in Iguazu. (Meals – Breakfast).
Argentinean side of Iguazu
Today is the day you’ve been waiting for as you travel just 18.6 miles (30km) from the town of Foz do Iguaçu to the Tancredo Neves Bridge. Where you’ll cross over the Iguaçu River and arrive at Argentina’s National Park of Iguazu. Climbing aboard a small train your first stop will be the ominously named Devil’s Throat (Garganta del Diablo. Which, standing at over 262ft., is the biggest waterfall in Iguazu. Having soaked up the enormity of the Devil’s Throat, your guide will take you along the wooden walkways and trails of both the upper and lower circuit.
With over 270 separate waterfalls and surrounded by the verdant jungle of Iguazu, exploring the Natural World Wonder of Iguazu is one of the most unforgettable moments. You’ll notice that the various trails that take you through the jungle, above and around waterfalls are built a few feet above the jungle floor and waterways. These raised platforms not only protect the natural habitat of the jungle wildlife but they will also take you to secluded viewpoints offering unimaginable views across the whole National Park.
After a full day exploring Argentina’s side of Iguazu Falls, it’s time to cross back over the border. As your transfer takes you back to your accommodation in Foz do Iguaçu, the rest of your evening is free to spend at your leisure.
Included: Private excursion with Transport, Guide and Entrance fees; Accommodation in Iguazu. (Meals – Breakfast).
Departure from Iguazu
It’s time to hit the road again as you make your way to your next destination where if you are planning to, you can enjoy exploring the beauty and vibrant, Carnival atmosphere of Brazil further. Your private transfer will take you to the airport for your onward journey.
Included: Private transfer from your hotel to the airport with assistance. (Meals – Breakfast).

Pop star Madonna, performing Saturday night at a massive free concert at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Madonna capped off her "Celebration" tour with a trip to the beach: Rio de Janeiro's famed Copacabana Beach, to be exact, where on Saturday night she put on a massive free show for some 1.6 million fans. It was the last performance during her globe-trotting retrospective tour as well as her only "Celebration" date in South America — and it garnered the biggest live crowd of her career.
Madonna postpones tour while recovering from 'serious bacterial infection'
The 1.6 million estimate came from Riotur , the city's official tourism agency. Madonna, who had not performed in Brazil since 2012, enthused about the evening on Instagram : "Words cannot express my gratitude!" she wrote in a caption to a drone video showing the beachfront crammed with fans. As with other "Celebration" shows, she invited local stars onstage with her: In Rio, her guests were Brazilian performers Anitta and Pabllo Vittar , the latter helping Madonna shift her track "Music" into a samba .
Copacabana Beach has something of a history when it comes to huge pop spectacles: In 2006, The Rolling Stones played for an estimated 1.5 million fans there, while a 1994 New Year's Eve show with Rod Stewart reportedly drew some 4.2 million attendees.

Madonna has brought her tour to a close with a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro , in front of a reported 1.6million fans.
It was the final night of her retrospective tour, marking her four decades in pop, which she has been taking around the world since last October.
AP News reported that she began the show telling the crowd : “Here we are in the most beautiful place in the world. This place is magic.”

Rio’s tourism agency said that 1.6million people attended the concert on the famous city beach, where huge events have taken place in the past. The Rolling Stones performed there to 1.2 million fans in 2006, and Rod Stewart gave the biggest free rock concert in history there in 1994, drawing 4million people (although more than a few may have been there for the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks extravaganza). Madonna’s previous largest live concert crowd was 130,000 fans in Paris in 1987.

Madonna's Final Celebration Tour Stop in Rio de Janeiro Draws Record-Breaking Audience of 1.6 Million
T he Queen of Pop held a free concert at the Copacabana Beach as a "thank you" to her fans "for celebrating more than four decades of music" during her global tour
Madonna promised her fans the biggest dance party in the world — and the Queen of Pop delivered on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro.
In March the singer, 65, announced she would be performing a historic free concert at Copacabana Beach for her final Celebration Tour show, and on the night a record-breaking 1.6 million fans watched the pop superstar perform.
The show made history as, though the annual New Year's Eve concerts at Copacabana Beach have drawn larger crowds, Madonna's May 4 audience was her biggest ever, and the largest ever for a stand-alone concert by any artist, a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Live Nation confirmed. The record was previously held by the Rolling Stones .
During the show, Madonna played a host of hits, including "Like a Virgin," "Like a Prayer," and "Into the Groove."
Pablo Vittar joined the pop icon on stage for "Music," while for her performance of "Vogue," the Brazilian crowd was treated to a guest appearance from Anitta , who later spoke of the "incredible moment" on her Instagram Stories .
"@madonna soooo happy for being part of this incredible moment with you," she wrote across a video of the two artists together on stage during the concert.
After the show, Madonna shared her delight and appreciation in several posts on Instagram, including a video from the event showing sweeping shots of the huge crowds.
"This really happened……….Thank you Rio 🇧🇷💛 ………. Thank you @pabllovittar and @anitta ……………Words cannot express my gratitude! To everyone involved!! 🇧🇷💛🇧🇷💚" she wrote alongside the clip.
Sponsored by Itaú Apresenta, the concert — her first in Brazil since 2012 — "will be free of charge as a thank you to her fans for celebration more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour," stated a press release.
The show took place in front of the Belmond Copacabana Palance Hotel, and entry was available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Material Girl kicked off her long-awaited Celebration Tour at London's O2 Arena in October with an electrifying two-hour set during which she opened up about her road back to the stage after her hospitalization last year following a serious bacterial infection .
"I didn't think I was gonna make it. Neither did my doctors. That's why I woke up with all of my children sitting around me," Madonna said of her kids Lourdes, 27, Rocco, 23, David, 18, Mercy, 18, and twins Stella and Estere, 11. "But the angels were protecting me, and my children were there. And my children always save me every time."
Last month the singer shared a carousel of behind-the-scenes snaps of herself with her kids ( David, Mercy, Stella and Estere all performed alongside mom during her run of shows) from their past few months on tour.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Madonna put on a free concert on Copacabana beach Saturday night, turning Rio de Janeiro’s vast stretch of sand into an enormous dance floor teeming with a multitude of her fans.
It was the last show of The Celebration Tour, her first retrospective, which kicked off in October in London .
The “Queen of Pop” began the show with her 1998 hit “Nothing Really Matters.” Huge cheers rose from the buzzing, tightly packed crowd, pressed up against the barriers. Others held house parties in brightly lighted apartments and hotels overlooking the beachfront. Helicopters and drones flew overhead, and motorboats and sailboats anchored off the beach filled the bay.
“Here we are in the most beautiful place in the world,” Madonna, 65, told the crowd. Pointing out the ocean view, the mountains and the Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking the city, she added: “This place is magic.”
Madonna performed her classic hits, including “Like A Virgin” and “Hung Up.” For the introduction to “Like A Prayer,” her head was completely covered in a black cape, a rosary gripped in her hands.
The star paid an emotional tribute to “all the bright lights” lost to AIDS as she sang “Live to Tell,” with black and white photos of people who died from the illness flashing behind her.
Later, she was joined on stage by Brazilian artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar.
Rio spent the last few days readying itself for the performance.
An estimated 1.6 million people attended the show, G1 reported, citing Rio City Hall’s tourism agency. That is more than 10 times Madonna’s record attendance of 130,000 at Paris’ Parc des Sceaux in 1987. Madonna’s official website hyped the show as the biggest ever in her four-decade career.
In recent days, the buzz was palpable. Fans milled outside the stately, beachfront Copacabana Palace hotel , where Madonna is staying, hoping to catch a glimpse of the pop star. During the sound check on the stage set up in front of the hotel, they danced on the sand.
By midday Saturday, fans crowded in front of the hotel. A white-bearded man carried a sign saying, “Welcome Madonna you are the best I love you.”
Flags with “Madonna” printed against a background of Copacabana’s iconic black and white waved sidewalk pattern hung from balconies. The area was packed with street vendors and concert attendees kitted out in themed T-shirts, sweating under a baking sun.
“Since Madonna arrived here, I’ve been coming every day with this outfit to welcome my idol, my diva, my pop queen,” said Rosemary de Oliveira Bohrer, 69, who sported a gold-colored cone bra and a black cap.
“It’s going to be an unforgettable show here in Copacabana,” said Oliveira Bohrer, a retired civil servant who lives in the area.
Eighteen sound towers were spread along the beach to ensure that all attendees can hear the hits. Her two-hour show started at 10:37 p.m. local time, nearly 50 minutes behind schedule.
City Hall produced a report in April estimating that the concert would vinject 293 million reals ($57 million) into the local economy. Hotel capacity was expected to reach 98% in Copacabana, according to Rio’s hotel association. Fans hailing from across Brazil and even Argentina and France sought out Airbnbs for the weekend, the platform said in a statement. Rio’s international airport had forecast an extra 170 flights during May 1-6, from 27 destinations, City Hall said in a statement.

“It’s a unique opportunity to see Madonna, who knows if she’ll ever come back,” said Alessandro Augusto, 53, who flew in from Brazil’s Ceara state — approximately 2,500 kilometers (1,555 miles) from Rio.
“Welcome Queen!” read Heineken ads plastered around the city, the lettering above an image of an upturned bottle cap resembling a crown.
Heineken wasn’t the only company seeking to profit from the excitement. Bars and restaurants prepared “Like a Virgin” cocktails. A shop in the downtown neighborhood famed for selling Carnival attire completely reinvented itself, stocking its shelves with Madonna-themed costumes, fans, fanny packs and even underwear.
Organization of the mega-event was similar to New Year’s Eve, when millions of people gather on Copacabana for its fireworks display, local authorities said. That annual event often produces widespread thefts and muggings, and there was some concern such problems might occur at Madonna’s show.

Rio state’s security plan included the presence of 3,200 military personnel and 1,500 civilian police officers on stand by. In the lead-up to the concert, Brazil’s navy inspected vessels that wished to position themselves offshore to follow the show.
A number of huge concerts have taken place on Copacabana beach before, including a 1994 New Year’s Eve show by Rod Stewart that drew more than 4 million fans and was the biggest free rock concert in history , according to Guinness World Records. Many of those spectators also came to see Rio’s fireworks show, though, so a more fitting comparison might be to the Rolling Stones in 2006, which saw 1.2 million people crowd onto the sand, according to Rio’s military police, the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported at the time.
Ana Beatriz Soares, a fan who was at Copacabana on Saturday, said Madonna has made her mark across the decades.
“Madonna had to run so that today’s pop artists could walk. That’s why she’s important, because she serves as an inspiration for today’s pop divas,” Soares said.
“And that’s 40 years ago. Not 40 days, 40 months. It’s 40 years,” she said.
