The dolphin interactions are regulated by rangers and a few lucky visitors are selected to hand-feed the dolphins a small amount of fish.

Though this Western Australia road trip can be done in as little as a week, this would involve big driving days and missing out on a lot of WA’s awesome sights.

To really get the most of driving from Perth to Broome, you should allow at least 2 weeks and anything up to 3 or even 4 weeks.

If you have your own car, you’re just about ready for the trip. But if you need to hire one, then the best and most affordable option is to get one through Rental Cars .

If you’re more of a campervan kind of person though, check out Spaceships Rentals , who have great vans for good prices.

You will also want to consider purchasing a park pass for the National parks in Western Australia as you will pass in or near the following:

  • Nambung National Park
  • Drover’s Cave National Park
  • Francois Peron National Park
  • Cape Range National Park
  • Karijini National Park

More information on purchasing a park pass can be found here .

Pro Tip: For access to the different national parks in Western Australia, you should buy the Holiday Pass (5 days for $25, 14 days for $40 or 4 weeks for $60) or the Annual All Parks Pass which is valid for 12 months and only costs $120.

If you’ve ever done a road trip in Australia, you would have noticed that drives tend to be quite long. This is particularly true in Western Australia.

If you have more time, I recommend following my Perth to Exmouth road trip itinerary first and then join in here from day 9 onwards.

You could also spread out some of the Perth to Exmouth drive. If you take it slow through Exmouth, Karijini and Eighty Mile Beach, your road trip could easily extend to over a month.

Let’s begin our epic road trip from Perth to Broome in Western Australia.

Perth To Broome Road Trip Map

Day 1: Perth to Geraldton

  • Distance: 415 km
  • Time: 4.5 – 5 hours

While the distance may be relatively short compared to the others on this road trip, there is plenty to see between Perth and Jurien Bay that could easily take you a few days.

Expect heavy traffic during winter public holidays or schools holidays and try to leave as early as possible to get the most out of your day.

The sealed roads are fast though and consist of mainly flat landscapes.

After exploring all the best Perth attractions and activities, it’s time to hit the road!

With nine walk trails, over 400 caves and home to western grey kangaroos, Yanchep is an easy first stop on your first day of driving.

Only 40 minutes north of Perth, you can go for a stroll or even spend the day here taking in the coastal woodlands, wildlife and limestone caves.

Yanchep National Park is also home to western grey kangaroos which can be seen early and late in the day. The park has nine walk trails suitable for any ages, interests and fitness abilities as well as over 400 caves to enjoy.

For those wanting to extend their Perth to Broome drive, this is also a great spot to spend a night.

The Pinnacles in Nambung National Park is often said to resemble walking on the moon or another planet. It’s s truly unique landscape for Western Australia.

The Pinnacles have incredible natural limestone structures that were formed approximately 25,000 to 30,000 years ago after the sea receded and left deposits of seashells.

Over time, the pillars have been exposed to the elements as coastal winds removed the surrounding sand.

Nambung National Park is a super cool place to see in Western Australia!

Pinnacles Desert

Walk along an easy 1.5-kilometre trail around the shores to see an abundance of thrombolites in the lake.

These rock-like structures are built by micro-organisms too small for the human eye to see. The thrombolite-building micro-organisms of Lake Thetis resemble the earliest forms of life on Earth!

Spend the late afternoon and evening enjoying the tranquillity of Jurien Bay along the coast at any of the beaches. If you’ve got your snorkelling gear, head towards the old wooden jetty and check out some of the coral around there.

You can also rent stand up paddleboards and enjoy some paddling if time permits.

Enjoy some delicious seafood for dinner before continuing your journey to Geraldton.

You’ll start noticing some leaning trees as you make your way closer to Geraldton.

The most photographed leaning tree is this River Gum that leans due to constant strong southerly winds.

Leaning Tree Geraldton

For your first overnight stay, we recommend booking your accommodation ahead of time so you don’t have to spend hours driving around finding a place to stay.

Check out the options on Booking.com .

If you end up wrapping up quite late and don’t want to drive too much further, consider staying in Jurien Bay overnight and continue to Geraldton early in the morning.

Perth To Broome Drive Views

Day 2: Geraldton to Kalbarri

  • Distance:  155 km
  • Time:  2 hours

Follow along the flat and fast sealed road from Geraldton to Kalbarri.

Enjoy some breakfast in town and go for a swim at the beach before continuing north towards your next stop.

If you have an extra day or two to spare, you can make a trip to the Abrolhos Islands which are filled with wonderful marine life, go on a fishing charter or take a scenic flight out to the islands.

Continue north to Hutt Lagoon, one of WA’s iconic pink lakes.

Drive along Port Gregory Road and park your car to walk to the edge of the water.

Explore the World Heritage listed Coral Coast and check out the dramatic coastal cliffs at Red Bluff which overs incredible views over the ocean and is a good spot for whale watching.

Don’t miss Island Rock and Natural Bridge for some epic sunset views and photos. Go for a swim at Pot Alley or bring your snorkelling gear for some fun at Blue Holes.

Natural Bridge In Kalbarri

Kalbarri National Park offers many different hiking options of varying classes that are suitable for any level.

You can enjoy gorge views from the picnic area and follow a short path to Hawks Head which overlooks the Murchison River. Or take the Z Bend Lookout trail which overlooks the river.

The Loop trail to Nature’s Window is only 800m and has views of the Murchison Riber’s switchback course from a natural rock arch that frames the upstream view. This is one of the more popular hikes in Kalbarri National Park.

You can also continue the trail along an 8km loop for those who want to get moving.

Nature's Window In Kalbarri National Park

Day 4: Kalbarri to Shark Bay

  • Distance : 374km
  • Time:  4 hours

The road from Kalbarri National Park to Shark Bay doesn’t have too many great views but the road is sealed, accessible and easy to drive.

The most diverse and abundant examples of living marine stromatolites (or ‘living fossils’) in the world are found right here in Western Australia and can be seen on this portion of your Perth to Broome drive.

The  stromatolites  can be viewed from the boardwalk which extends out in the ocean for everyone to enjoy.

Note that boating, swimming, diving and snorkelling are not permitted over stromatolites or within 300m of the shore.

Stretching over 70km and up to 10 metres deep are billions of tiny shells along aptly named Shell Beach.

This is one of the only places on earth where shells replace beach sand and is a must-visit on your way into Shark Bay.

The ocean here is hypersaline so it is very salty, making it easy to float – just don’t get any in your eyes!

READ MORE: Lap the whole state with this epic Western Australia road trip !

Denham is your first stop in exploring the Shark Bay World Heritage Area and is a friendly coastal town of approximately 1,000 residents.

The town provides many accommodation options, has safe swimming beaches, restaurants and a golf course.

Be sure to stock up on supplies and fuel before moving on tomorrow!

Shell Beach

Francois Peron National Park is one of Western Australia’s best-hidden gems but requires a high-clearance 4WD and experience driving.

There aren’t any sealed roads and you should be prepared to get bogged and know how to get out.

Known for its contrasting red cliffs, white beaches and blue waters, the park offers great opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, swimming, snorkelling, fishing and bushwalking.

There is a small campground with gas BBQs and toilets located at Big Lagoon. Be sure to read all signs carefully as some beaches aren’t safe to swim in due to strong currents.

No bookings are taken for camping and sites are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

For those without a 4WD, you can access Little Lagoon – a natural swimming pool full of fish – and Peron Homestead which has a self-guided station walk trail, picnic facilities and a hot tub.

Francois Peron National Park

Day 6: Shark Bay to Coral Bay

  • Distance : 560 km
  • Time:  5.5 hours

One of the more famous places to visit on any Perth to Broome drive, just 30 minutes from Denham, is Monkey Mia which is famous for its wild dolphin experience.

Monkey Mia, part of the World Heritage-listed Shark Bay, is surrounded by rusty red sand dunes, white sandy beaches and its waters are full of marine life.

Here, you might see dugongs, sharks, rays, turtles and loads of other fish outside of the dolphins.

A day permit of $15 per adult applies for Monkey Mia.

Sunrise Over Monkey Mia

Get out of the car and give your legs are break when you get to Carnarvon.

This Western Australian town is known for its fruit farms, making it a delicious stop for local produce.

Walk along the One Mile Jetty which is perfect for visiting in the late afternoon for sunset.

You can also head to the Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum that was built in 1964 to support NASA’s Gemini, Apollo and Skylab programs.

One Mile Jetty In Carnarvon

Stay overnight in Coral Bay before continuing on tomorrow towards Exmouth and the Ningaloo Reef.

If you arrive in time for sunset, spend this on the beach. Otherwise, you can head to your accommodation in the evening which should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment.

The  Ningaloo Coral Bay – Bayview  is a fantastic spot to sleep.

Budget-conscious? You can stay at a free rest stop just outside of Coral Bay along the road. There are no facilities here so you’ll need to be fully equipped.

Day 7: Coral Bay to Exmouth

  • Distance:  155 km
  • Time:  2 hours

Spend the morning in Coral Bay before continuing along the main sealed road all the way to Exmouth.

There isn’t much to see along the way and the road is mostly flat with dry desert views.

The beach at Coral Bay is calm, crystal clear and is perfect for snorkelling and diving.

Walk to the right of Coral Bay’s beach to Skeleton Bay, a reef shark nursery where you can see some shark pups!

You can also go quad biking on the sand dunes, go out on diving, fishing or boat routes in Coral Bay.

We’d recommend you book a Coral Bay reef tour on a glass-bottom boat to allow you to see the beauty of the reef without taking too much time out of your Western Australia drive itinerary.

Your first stop is the  Ningaloo Visitor Centre  where you can pick up all the information and maps you need for Cape Range National Park and for insight on weather and local’s tips on where to swim at that current time.

Here, you can also learn about whale sharks and other marine life in the area and how conservation works in Ningaloo Reef.

Welcome To The Ningaloo Reef!

If you’ve got a 4WD, you can step up the excitement of the road trip and drive along the Town Beach and find your own private spot to swim.

Otherwise, just head down for a quick dip and enjoy the ocean views.

Drive to the lighthouse for sweeping views over Exmouth and the ocean. If you have binoculars, be sure to bring it along to spot whales breaching in the distance.

Head up in the late afternoon to take in the serenity and enjoy watching the sunset. This is also one of the best stargazing spots you’ll ever find!

Day 8: Cape Range National Park

  • Distance:  60 km
  • Time:  1 hour

As you are halfway through your drive from Perth to Broome, you’re in for some real treats! Drive from Exmouth into Cape Range National Park along the sealed access road.

Boasting 50 km of pristine beaches, breathtaking deep canyons and rugged limestone ranges, Cape Range National Park is absolutely spectacular and warrants as many days as you have available to fully enjoy it.

One of the highlights of your Perth to Broome road trip is the opportunity to swim with whale sharks. Be sure to  book a tour   early  to reserve your place.

Swimming with whale sharks in the Ningaloo Reef is very controlled and there are loads of rules around it to ensure that it doesn’t negatively impact whale sharks.

Swim With Whale Sharks In Exmouth

Head to Turquoise Bay, Oyster Stacks and Sandy Bay for epic snorkelling alongside turtles, stingrays, reef sharks and plenty of other fish and coral.

You can also book this tour to swim with massive manta rays !

Snorkel With Turtles In Turquoise Bay

If you’re not keen on getting in the water, you can enjoy the 3 km return trail through Mandu Mandu Gorge, the 1.5 km Yardie Gorge Trail, the 3.5 km Charles Knife Edge Walk or some longer trails such Shothole Canyon’s 24.5 km trail.

As summer gets as hot as 50 degrees Celcius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), the walks and hikes through the park should only be done between April and September when temperatures are cooler.

This is generally the best time to make this road trip anyway.

Day 9: Exmouth to Karijini

  • Distance: 658 km
  • Time: 8 hours

After a few days on the coast, your Perth to Broome road trip is going to head inland towards Karijini National Park, one of Australia’s more underrated national parks.

Unfortunately, there’s not much to see between Exmouth and Karijini so today is mostly a big day of driving. Be prepared with snacks, water and make all the fuel stops you need.

Welcome to the Pilbara!

Before heading into Karijini, stop by Tom Price, the highest town in Western Australia at 747 metres above sea level.

Pop into the visitor centre to get maps of Karijini National Park and into the supermarket for anything you’ll need to cover you for Karijini.

This is your last major pit stop before you head into the park.

Since you won’t really have any time to explore the national park on your first day, why not score free accommodation by camping near Hamersley Gorge.

Just past the turnoff to the gorge is an open area outside of the national park where you are allowed to camp.

Enjoy your night under the stars and get plenty of rest for tomorrow.

Day 10: Karijini National Park

Welcome to Karijini National Park, Western Australia’s second-largest national park, encompassing some 627,441 ha.

You are about to embark on some incredible hikes through spectacular, rugged scenery with ancient geological formations.

If you’re travelling through Karijini during the dry season (April to October which generally the best time to visit), it’s going to be fairly hot.

You should be prepared with good hiking shoes or sandals, protective weather gear, swimwear and water for your hikes.

The roads in the park are mostly unsealed though 2WD vehicles will still be able to drive through fine.

The roads are mostly red dirt so if you’re bringing your own car, beware that this stuff is almost impossible to get out!

Red Dirt Roads In Karijini

You’ll start at the westernmost point of the national park and head to Hamersley Gorge.

Here, you can enjoy a beautiful morning descending into a gorge with dramatic colours, textures and reflections.

Splash Around In Hamersley Gorge

In the middle of the national park, you’ll find a cluster of incredible gorges and waterfalls where you could easily spend a few days exploring.

To break these up and to ensure you have sufficient energy for hiking and to enjoy the gorges, it’s best to group a couple of gorges together, stay overnight and then tackle the others the next day.

These two gorges are class 5 trails which means they are the most difficult in the park. Expect to find steep and slippery sections.

If these hikes are inaccessible to you, you can head to the Joffre and Knox lookouts and enjoy the views from above.

Karijini Eco Retreat offers stay-in or campsite options but needs to be booked ahead of time . There are full facilities here as well as a restaurant.

Karijini Eco Retreat

Day 11: Karijini

Wake up to a morning view of Western Australia’s abundance of wildflowers in bloom and prepare yourself for another epic day of exploring gorges.

An easy 30-minute return hike will take you to some breathtaking views of Hancock Gorge.

From here, you can continue along to Oxer Lookout which consists or a narrow trail with loose rocks.

After enjoying your views from above, head to Weano Gorge and take on the shorter Upper and Lower Weano trails.

From the Lower Weano trail, you can continue on to Handrail Pool at the peak of the day when it’s hottest. The Gorge is refreshing and cool so this is the best time to go for a lovely dip.

Take on Hancock Gorge after this and walk all the way downstream to Kermits Pool where you’ll find a small turquoise pool with some spots to jump in.

This hike is also a class 5 hike and is one of the most difficult in the park.

In the late afternoon, pop into the Karijini Visitor Centre to immerse yourself further in the park.

The Visitor Centre provides plenty of fascinating information about the gorges, the stories behind them, the surrounding Pilbara area and the geology on the site.

Wifi, public toilet and shower facilities are also available here.

Your overnight pit stop will be at Dales Camping Area and needs to be booked well in advance.

Campsites are in very high demand from June to September and the only other campsite is back at the Karijini Eco Retreat.

Day 12: Karijini National Park

Spend your last full day of in Karijini National Park in Dales Gorge before continuing your Perth to Broome drive.

There are a few different trail options through Dales Gorge that you could do all in a day. Start with the 2km Gorge Rim trail and enjoy the wonderful views into Dales Gorge.

Fortescue Falls is a stunning waterfall that can’t be missed. You can enjoy a few hours here laying in the sun, having a picnic and revelling in the tranquillity of the surrounding nature.

From Fortescue Falls, continue the hike onwards to Fern Pool, another beautiful little swimming hole.

From the car park, descend down a steep slope to the bottom of the gorge before you reach the fern-framed pool that is another great spot to enjoy for a couple of hours.

Once you’ve finished exploring Dales Gorge, you can either spend the night in the camping area otherwise exit the park and stay at Auski Tourist Village which is a short drive away.

There are both campsites and accommodation options here.

You could easily extend your time in Karijini to a week and take your time exploring the gorges individually. This would also allow you to get plenty of rest between big hikes and spend more time in the swimming holes.

If you do have the time, you could tack on Mount Bruce which is the second-tallest peak in WA. Here you’ll find three trail options, the longest being to Mount Bruce Summit which is a 9km, 6-hour return hike.

Day 13: Karijini to Eighty Mile Beach

  • Distance: 580 km
  • Time: 6.5 hours

Enjoy your last morning in Karijini and perhaps making any last stops in any gorges you missed before continuing on your road trip.

After this, you’re in for another big drive out of the National Park and back towards the coast to Port Hedland.

While Port Hedland isn’t exactly the top of any must-see destinations, this mining town does have a couple of things in town to give you a chance to stretch your legs.

You can head to Pretty Pool Park for a quick swim or go to Dalgety House Museum which showcases a little bit about the local history of the town.

This is also a good opportunity to top up on fuel and any supplies you might need.

After that big drive, you’ll stop and spend the rest of the day and night here at Eighty Mile Beach.

Famous for its fishing and shell collecting, Eighty Mile Beach is given its name thanks to the super long stretch of coast that seemingly goes on forever.

If you have a 4WD you can drive along the beach and find a nice spot to spend the day and enjoy an epic sunset on the beach.

Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park offers powered and unpowered campsites as well as self-contained cabins to stay in.

Sunset On Eighty Mile Beach

Day 14: Eighty Mile Beach to Broome

  • Distance: 380 km
  • Time: 4 hours

Wake up to a beautiful sunrise on the beach and prepare yourself for the final leg of your Perth to Broome drive itinerary.

Turn left from the main road towards Port Smith Caravan Park and drive along the 23 km well-maintained dirt road to one of WA’s best-kept secrets.

Pop in to go fishing or for a refreshing dip to break up your drive.

Port Smith Lagoon

Continue along the National Highway all the way to your final destination, Broome!

Broome is the famous beach resort town in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. Known for its dramatic sunsets, camel rides and incredible beaches, you will plenty to do here.

The question is, how much time can you spend here?

Make a brief stop in the visitor centre to get information on tides, weather updates and a map for the different beaches around town.

Reward yourself with a relaxing afternoon at Cable Beach and spend the rest of the day fishing or swimming.

Cable Beach is also a nude beach though most of the time you’ll only find the older folks stripping down and taking advantage of this liberty.

If you’ve booked a camel ride, you’ll do this on the beach in the late afternoon or at sunset.

Western Australia is huge and unless you are on a time crunch, there are plenty of other side trips you can take on this road trip.

Don’t forget to have plenty of water, supplies and tools handy in the car as driving in remote Western Australia will often leave you out of range and a flat tyre is a nightmare.

Are there any good companies that people would recommend that we could rent a SUV or motorhome and drive one way up to Broome? (Versus having to drive back?)

This is such a great, comprehensive guide. Really helpful when planning my own WA trip, thank you 🙂

You are welcome. So glad you found our article helpful. We hope you had a great time in Broome. 🙂

This trip looks amazing also all the photos looks awesome. I enjoyed alot your blog

What is the best route coming home in about the same time length of 14 days? 🙂

West Coast is the best! But I read the part about the campervan and I don’t think that spaceships campervans operate in western Australia though. Loads of other options though! (I.e. home on the road, travellers Autobarn , share bus who help find a group to rent with etc)

Yes it is Jade. West is best. I say this to Jarryd all the time. I am from the west. Thank you for this. Amanda is from the west too, but we both haven’t been back for a while. We will change that. Thanks for letting us know. 🙂

Perth to Broome Safari

10 days | camp under desert skies and swim in hidden oases on a 4wd adventure.

Waterhole in Karijini National Park

On this 4WD Perth to Broome safari adventure, you’ll explore the natural wonders of Western Australia. Spend your nights under a blanket of desert stars and your days in search of secret swimming holes among waterfalls. Snorkel with turtles, meet friendly dolphins at Monkey Mia, relax on Eighty Mile Beach, explore national parks like Karijini, Nambung and Kalbarri, watch spectacular sunsets and take on some fun, active options in your free time to ramp up the adventure.

Trip overview

  • Take a 4WD safari through Western Australia and camp under a dazzling blanket of stars most nights – this is a great opportunity to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
  • Say hello to the famous wild dolphins that live at Monkey Mia, then explore the World Heritage area of Shark Bay, home to the oldest living organisms in the world – stromatolites.
  • Spend two nights in Yardie Creek Station’s private campgrounds among kangaroos near Cape Range National Park – go snorkelling, soak up the sun on Turquoise Bay and explore Ningaloo Reef from the waters of Coral Bay.
  • Kick back and relax on Eighty Mile Beach and Shell Beach, explore unique landscapes in Kalbarri National Park and Nambung National Park and drive along Australia’s famous red deserts.
  • Spend some time in the red-hued Pilbara, camping under a blanket of stars in Karijini National Park and spending your days exploring ancient gorges and refreshing swimming holes and waterfalls.
  • This trip is operated and run by our trusted partner, Kimberley Wild Expeditions. You will be travelling with a mixture of both Kimberley Wild Expeditions customers and Intrepid customers.
  • On some days of this trip, you'll spend many hours driving through very sparse areas of Australia. Sit back and enjoy landscapes that you'd miss in any other form of travel. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. Think of it as a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. The drive days can be long, but it's as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie!
  • This trip involves some camping out in nature (or staying in backpacker-style dormitory accommodation, including bunk beds) so the facilities are very basic. It is definitely a trip for either younger, fit travellers or the young at heart and fit in body! A lack of emphasis on creature comforts makes this an authentic experience of the Australian outback. Some locations will have little to no Internet connection or phone service.
  • This trip involves activities like hiking on uneven terrain and clambering over boulders. It is best suited to travellers with good mobility and fitness. Details on physical activities can be found in the itinerary.

Welcome to Perth! Or Boorloo in the language of the local Whadjuk Nyoongar people, who are the Traditional Owners of the land on which Perth is now located. This morning, head to the fascinating Nambung National Park to check out the famous Pinnacle Desert – a unique landscape unlike any other in the country. After, journey to the massive sand dunes of Jurien Bay, where you’ll have the opportunity to go sandboarding down the slopes and perfect your surfing-on-land technique. From here, continue through Geraldton to Kalbarri, where you’ll spend the first night of your 4WD adventure after a group dinner.

  • Backpacker Dorm Share Accommodation (1 night)

Today, you’ll take the short drive to Kalbarri National Park, where you can explore some of the park’s diverse scenery, like Murchison Gorge, Natures Window, The Loop and Z-Bend Gorge (this gorge has a steep descent, but it’s worth the effort for a refreshing swim!). Maybe you’d like to abseil here – an optional activity for those looking for a bit more adventure. After lunch with your group, visit the beautiful Shell Beach – one of only two beaches in the world made entirely from seashells. Tonight, you’ll get back on the road and head towards Denham and Shark Bay.

After breakfast this morning, take the short drive across the Peron Peninsula down to the beach. Here, you’ll visit the world-famous Monkey Mia dolphins – sure to become your new friends. The dolphins here are used to people and super friendly, so this is a must-do experience for anyone in the area. Continue along the highway to Coral Bay – the Jewel of the Northwest – via the fascinating stromatolites at Hamelin Pool. These are the oldest living organisms in the world! When you arrive in Coral Bay, sit down for a group dinner and enjoy a night to relax.

Take a day to explore Coral Bay today. This place is just as relaxing as the name suggests! Maybe kick back on the warm sand or go for a swim before visiting Ningaloo Reef and the amazing marine life that lives below the waterline. Here, maybe go snorkelling or take a cruise on a glass-bottom boat to see the wildlife up close (while you stay dry). In the late afternoon, drive into Exmouth. Tonight, kick back at your excellent campsite – Yardi Creek Station – and watch the sunset as kangaroos hop about the grounds. You’ll spend two nights here, to enjoy some free time in this gorgeous area and take on some active optional activities. In the morning, maybe go snorkelling (equipment provided) or diving, search for whale sharks if the season’s right or view Vlamingh Head Lighthouse. In the afternoon, maybe laze on the pristine beach at Turquoise Bay and soak up the sunshine.

  • Backpacker Dorm Share Accommodation (2 nights)
  • Breakfast (2)

Please note that swimming with whale sharks is not included on this trip and is an optional activity. It is very important that you pre-book any whale shark experiences, as these can sell out far in advance. Please book your excursion for day 5 of this trip. Please also note that whale sharks visit the region between mid-March and mid-September only, so please make sure you schedule your trip accordingly if you would like to include this experience in your trip.

This morning, head inland past the many Aussie cattle stations to reach the outback oasis of Karijini National Park. Along the way, you’ll pass through Tom Price – a little town known for its iron ore mining – before reaching your camp that overlooks the magnificent Hamersley Range. Enjoy a full day of adventuring and exploration in Karijini National Park and discover its amazing gorges and swimming holes. Formed over 2500 million years ago, the Hamersley Ranges are some of the most unusual landforms on Earth! You’ll be able to take some great photos while you’re here – if you need a new Instagram post, this place is perfect. Deep in the gorges, you’ll come across cascading waterfalls and fresh, still waterholes that are ideal for swimming. Dales Gorge, Fortesque Falls, Fern Pool, Circular Pool, Weano Gorge and Hancock Gorge are just some that you can visit.

  • Camping (2 nights)

Say your sad farewells to Karijini this morning and travel towards the coast and the iron ore town of Port Hedland. Take some time for a quick tour of the town and marvel at the incredible size of the iron ore industry. After lunch, you’ll continue to the Pilbara region, where you’ll spend the night. Enjoy a group dinner together in Sandfire and take the opportunity to do a spot of stargazing in the blanket of night sky, which boasts very little light pollution.

  • Camping (1 night)

This morning, you’ll have some leisure time on the stretching sands of the picturesque Eighty Mile Beach – one of Australia’s most remarkable hidden gems! Stroll along the white sandy beach and get some fantastic photos of the azure water before continuing north to Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm on the Dampier Peninsula. When you arrive, maybe take a swim in the infinity pool that looks over Cygnet Bay.

This morning after breakfast, you’ll take a tour of Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, which provides insight into the remote pearling industry. Then, journey north to the One Arm Point Aboriginal Community to tour a local aquaculture hatchery that’s perched right on the tip of One Arm Point, overlooking the impressive Buccaneer Archipelago. After lunch, head to Broome, arriving just in time for one of the famous sunsets on Cable Beach. This is where your trip comes to an end.

Show Full Itinerary

Your adventure begins in Perth (Boorloo in the language of the local Whadjuk Nyoongar people, who are the traditional owners of the land on which Perth is now located). Meet your group early this morning and leave the city, driving north to Nambung National Park to explore The Pinnacles. These are ancient rock sculptures that rise out of the desert. Journey on to Western Australia’s own Pink Lake at Port Gregory. From here continue on through Geraldton to the quiet beach town of Kalbarri, where you’ll stay the night.

Today head into Kalbarri National Park. Hike around some of the park’s diverse scenery, including Murchison Gorge, the Loop Walk and Nature’s Window. Its a steep descent into Z Bend Gorge. After lunch continue up the coast to Shark Bay and visit the beautiful Shell Beach, which is one of only two beaches in the world composed entirely of shells. Get back on the road and continue towards Monkey Mia where you'll spend the night.

This morning head to the beach and see if you can spot some marine life in Monkey Mia. The beach is well known for their resident dolphins. The idyllic shores around the Francoise Peron National Park are perfect to stretch the legs and admire another slice of Western Australian coastline. The next stop is back at the base of the Shark Bay peninsula where you’ll see the fascinating stromatolites at Hamelin Pool. These marine rock formations are some of the world’s oldest and largest living fossils. After a short break, continue along the highway to Coral Bay – known as the ‘Jewel of the Northwest’.

Today explore picturesque Coral Bay, home to the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef. Snorkel equipment is available to hire (at own expense), or you could cruise the reef in a glass-bottom boat to observe the tropical life teeming below the surface. The marine park is home to 250 species of coral and over 500 species of fish. In the late afternoon, it’s a short drive to Exmouth which will be our overnight stop for the next two nights.

Spend the morning snorkelling right off the beach in the stunning Cape Range National Park. Depending on the time of year, you have the option to snorkel or scuba dive in search of whale sharks and manta rays. Perhaps take a visit to Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, one of the few places in Australia where you can see the sun both rise and set. Enjoy taking a wander around the town of Exmouth before settling down for the night.

Head inland today through the vast cattle stations of the Pilbara region. The sparsely populated Pilbara desert is known for its red earth and rich mineral deposits. In the afternoon pass through the little town of Tom Price, which is renowned for its iron ore mining. Continue on to your campsite overlooking the magnificent Hamersley Range in Karijini. Before you go to sleep, take a minute to gaze up at one the most magnificent night skies you’re ever likely to see.

Over the next two days explore the almighty gorges of Karijini National Park. Formed over 2500 million years ago, the Hamersley Ranges feature some of the most unusual landforms on Earth. You’ll be able to take some great photographs while you’re here. Hike deep into the gorges, where you’ll come across cascading waterfalls and fresh waterholes ideal for swimming in. Dales Gorge and Circular Pool, Fortescue Falls, Fern Pool and Weano Gorge are just some of the places you can visit. This part of the journey is a real highlight.

Head back into the gorges today for further exploration. Sing a tune in the natural amphitheatre caused by curved gorge walls, then make your way down to Hancock Gorge. Named after the Australian tycoon Lang Hancock, this is a narrow inlet of red rocks leading to a refreshing waterhole.

Depart Karijini this morning and travel towards the coast. Visit the iron ore port of Port Hedland, the second most populated town in the Pilbara. Take a quick tour of the town and gain an understanding of the scale of the iron ore industry. After lunch continue on to nearby Pardoo cattle station, where you’ll spend the last night of your trip in hostel style accommodation.

The drive to your final destination of Broome will take around six hours. En route, enjoy a leisurely break and stroll along the immense 80-Mile Beach. On arrival into Broome your trip comes to an end with a drop off at your preferred accommodation. Say goodbye to your fellow travellers and enjoy an idyllic Broome sunset - a fitting end to your overland adventure.

Day 1 Broome – Port Hedland

BROOME

On our journey towards Port Hedland we travel along the edge of The Great Sandy Desert with its small and meagre vegetation Most of Australia’s northern coastline is bordered by extensive mangrove forest. One important exemption is Eighty Mile Beach. Enjoy the beauty of this white sandy beach and turquoise water of the Indian Ocean, renowned for fishing and shell collecting. Stingrays, stonefish and sharks are in abundance and good reasons to stay ashore. We reach Port Hedland in the early evening.

Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Port Hedland (Breakfast)

Day 2 Port Hedland – Karijini National Park

PORT HEDLAND

After breakfast we depart Port Hedland, Australia’s busiest iron-ore shipping port. We might – if lucky – sight an endless iron-ore train wheeling into or out of the port. Driving in a southerly direction across the Pilbara region. The traditional owners called their land “bilypara“, which could be translated with “dry”. No wonder: This area, which is twice as large as Germany, half of it consisting of desert and red coloured crests. Today’s accommodation is to be found in the heart of Karijini National Park. What a fantastic atmosphere and a guaranteed good night sleep!

Accommodation: Karijini Eco Retreat, Karijini National Park (Breakfast)

Day 3 Karijini National Park

KARIJINI 2

The rock formations of Western Australia’s second biggest National Park belong to the oldest ones in the world , the landscape most impressive and colourful. The plateau which is rich in iron ore and therefore colored intensively red brown, offers spectacular lookouts and many gorges with permanent water pools. We walk down through the changing vegetation of the iron-rich gorge walls to the park’s only permanent waterfall. Just a short distance from Fortescue Falls, you can swim in the refreshing, spring fed Fern Pool. Finally, we visit the spectacular vantage point of the Oxer Lookout with its fantastic view on four gorges joining each other.

Accommodation: Karijini Eco Retreat, Karijini National Park (Breakfast / Lunch)

Day 4 Karijini National Park – Exmouth

EXMOUTH

Today we leave the irone ore area of Tom Price towards the coast. Its gorges cut deep into the rock layers as well as colorful rock formations make up the magic of this rugged landscape. In the evening we arrive in Exmouth, the northern end of the Ningaloo Reef. Experts claim that the marine life of this ref is more abundant than that found at the Great Barrier Reef.

Accommodation: Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort, Exmouth (Breakfast)

Day 5 Exmouth (Ningaloo Reef)

Breathtaking views from Vlaming Head Lighthouse across North West Cape, beautiful Ningaloo Reef and gigantic antennas of the Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt. During our short stroll in Mandu Mandu Gorge we are looking out for some rare inhabitants, Black Footed Rock Wallabies. Turquoise Bay creates the perfect scenes for some relaxation, contemplation on the many impressions of the past days, and the temptation of the effervescent Indian Ocean for a refreshing swim. Late afternoon we return to our accommodation in Exmouth.

Day 6 Exmouth (Ningaloo Reef) – Coral Bay – Carnarvon

DAY DOTS

After enjoying breakfast leisurely drive to Coral Bay. Here, we will encounter the 260 km long natural wonder of the Ningaloo Reef. As the reef is not far from shore it can be readily available to discover with the aid of snorkel and flippers on an outing in a glass-bottom- boat. The shallow water of the reef is the homeland to various sea creatures, such as corals, unusual sea stars, crustaceans and over 500 species of different fishes. In the afternoon leisurely drive from the southern end of Ningaloo Reef to Carnarvon.

Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Carnarvon (Breakfast)

Day 7 Carnarvon – Monkey Mia (Shark Bay)

MONKEY MIA

Typical “Outback Australian impressions” will accompany you on the drive to Monkey Mia today. First Stop at Hamelin Pool where the world best known colony of stromatolites can be admired. After our next stop at Shell Beach we pay homage to this World Natural Heritage area with visit to the Shark Bay Interpretive Centre in Denham. In the afternoon we arrive in Monkey Mia, home of the well-known dolphins. Nearly every day of the year they come to the shore to give you a unique experience that will never be forgotten. After dinner a local Aborigine will introduce us on a walk into the indigenous culture. Enjoy the dream time stories and the sound of the didgeridoo under the clear and bright night sky of Australia’s Outback Coast.

Accommodation: Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, Shark Bay (Breakfast)

Day 8 Monkey Mia (Shark Bay) – Kalbarri

KALBARRI 1

In the morning you have the opportunity to come face to face with these famous dolphins. Depending upon the season, our drive from the World Heritage area of Shark Bay to Kalbarri National Park will be escorted by the famous wildflowers. We will visit Kalbarri National Park where we enjoy the breathtaking view into the Murchison Gorge. In the evening we will arrive in the “laid back village” of Kalbarri.

Accommodation: Kalbarri Palm Resort, Kalbarri (Breakfast)

Day 9 Kalbarri – Geraldton

GERALDTON 4

After breakfast we drive again to the Kalbarri National Park. The rugged coastal formations here are of impressive beauty. Via coastal road we travel via Port Gregory to Geraldton and experience some of the most picturesque grazing land. A beautiful aerial scenic flight includes overflying the fascinating islands in the Pelsaert Group, the Easter Group and the Wallabi Group. In 1629, this was the scene of the famous mutiny of the Batavia.

Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Geraldton (Breakfast)

Day 10 Geraldton – Perth

PERTH 7

A visit to Mount Scott gives you the opportunity of an outlook over the town of Geraldton and Grey’s Bay. Here is also the memorial for the victims of the sunken warship HMAS Sydney II. Our sightseeing tour concludes by visiting the architecturally interesting St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in the town centre. We are leaving Geraldton, the sunniest town in W.A. , south along the coast via Leeman and Jurien Bay towards Cervantes, the entrance to Nambung National Park. The Pinnacles are among the most visited natural wonders of the state. Thousands of limestone pillars rise out of a stark landscape of yellow sand. There is ample time to explore the area and to take some colourful photos from these amazing formations. These impressions of lights and colours will stay with you for many years to come. The journey continues south via Lancelin to Perth, where this extraordinary journey ends at your hotel.

Covering an immense distance at a leisurely pace, this trip serves as the perfect getaway for those looking to unearth some of Australia's most serene delights.

Why you’ll love this trip

  • Explore Western Australia’s desert landscapes, national parks and spectacular Coral Coast in rugged style on the ultimate small group overland adventure.
  • The cattle stations, red earth and mining communities of the Pilbara are reminiscent of the sun-baked Australia much of the world imagines, and you’ll get to see it all firsthand.
  • Consider peering into the ecologically diverse underwater world of Ningaloo Reef by plane, glass-bottom boat or snorkel, and swim with the gentle beasts of the deep in season – whalesharks!
  • Enjoy the flexibility of a private vehicle, the local knowledge of a passionate guide and the magic of camping under the great southern sky – what’s not to love about this part of Australia?
  • Hike the trails of Karijini National Park, weaving through the rocky chasms, and reward your efforts by taking a swim in the park’s ancient gorges and waterholes.

Is this trip right for you?

  • It is a ‘no frills’ West Coast experience. You’ll spend some nights of the trip sleeping at camping grounds in twin-share tents. While conditions can be basic, this is all part of the adventure.
  • This trip requires a moderate to high level of fitness as it involves a lot of walking, allowing you to really get among nature. The hike in Karijini National Park is challenging. Please bring sturdy, comfortable walking shoes and comfortable clothing. You will need two pairs of shoes, one that can get wet.
  • On some days of the trip, you will spend several hours driving, often through very sparse areas of desert. Sit back and enjoy landscapes that you would miss in any other form of travel, and please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
  • Temperatures in Western Australia can be extreme. During the day the weather can be hot (and the Australian sun is strong) so please bring appropriate clothing, use sun protection and drink plenty of water. In the evenings temperatures really drop, so ensure you have base layers and warm clothing.
  • When you’re not camping, you’ll stay in multi-share accommodation that may be mixed gender.
  • All times and distances subject to road and weather conditions.

Day 3: Karijini National Park

This, without any doubt, is one of Australia’s most magnificent national parks (and it’s not like Australia has any shortage of them). Freshwater springs trickle through chasms to form translucent rock pools, walking trails weave between dramatic rock ravines.. Spend a full day exploring the gorges, gullies and secluded swimming spots of Karijini. Weano Gorge, Hancock Gorge, Dales Gorge and Oxers Lookout are just some of the better-known sites we’ll get to during our visit to Karijini.

Total driving time today is around 2 hours and approximately 30km. Total walking distance is approximately 6km.

Day 5: Exmouth

Today is a long day of driving (approximately 9 hours and approximately 750km in total). Leaving Karijini, travel through the vast bushland and cattle stations of the Pilbara region. This sparsely populated region is known for its red earth and rich mineral deposits.

You just swim out from shore and suddenly you’re in a world of coral, fish, turtles and manta rays. Swimming above these enormous, majestic creatures is really something else, they might even put on an acrobatic show for you! Not much of a swimmer? There’s also the option of taking in the scene on a glass bottom boat tour, along with many other optional activities. We’ll introduce you to the friendly staff at Coral Bay Eco Tours.

  • Snorkel with Manta Rays – half day trip

There is no driving today, just a short walk to Coral Bay Eco Tours and water activities.

Day 8: Monkey Mia

Today we cross over the Tropic of Capricorn. You probably won’t notice it, but what crossing this latitude means is that from here on south the sun will never be directly above you. You should still wear a hat though. Main stop for the day is Shell Beach, which, much as name would suggest, is a beach made of shells. What’s quite incredible about the place however is the amount of shells that there are. Locals have been using them in various industries for years, yet they still cover a stretch 60 km long and up to 7 metres deep. Tonight we stay in Monkey Mia.

  • Hostel (with shared facilities) (1 night) Monkey Mia

Total driving time today is around 6.5 hours and approximately 600km. Total walking distance is approximately 2km.

WA government to subsidise Broome-Kununurra flights, more routes linking Perth and far north

T he WA government has announced new subsidised flights to and across the state's far north to reduce the cost of travel for residents and tourists.

The government's Affordable Airfares Program will subsidise Airnorth and Nexus Airlines flights between Broome and Kununurra for the first time, with fares to be capped at $199 one way.

The scheme aims to improve regional flight affordability for residents and attract more visitors amid the cost of living crisis.

Funding has also been extended to Virgin Australia and Qantas, which already offer capped fares for residents between Perth and Exmouth, Broome and Kununurra.

News of the expansion comes as regional carrier Bonza cancels flights across the east coast and faces questions over its future and viability.

Since the scheme began six years ago, more than 200,000 capped airfares have been flown in WA.

Last year, services from Perth to Exmouth, Broome and Kununurra sold nearly 29,000 tickets.

Boost to Kimberley residents

Nexus flights between regional WA towns commenced in July 2023 , ending Air North's monopoly on many routes.

However, the additional carrier has also led to business being split between the two airlines, raising questions around the long-term sustainability of both companies operating on a route with limited customers.

The ABC reported in November 2023 that Nexus and Airnorth were caught in a price battle in the attempt to attract customers to travel across the Kimberley and to Darwin.

Reports of certain flights operating with as few as 10 passengers led to aviation expert Tim Collins questioning how long the airlines could operate while suffering a potential financial loss.

WA Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti said the government was pleased to be able to support the airlines and provide cost-of-living relief to Kimberley residents.

"With a state as vast as ours, air travel is an important form of transport for tourists as well as regional residents," she said.

"We're really proud to be delivering the Affordable Airfares Program for another year, which will potentially save travellers hundreds of dollars, encourage them to explore our incredible regions and help support our regional tourism operators."

'A really positive thing'

Australia's North West tourism chief executive Bill Tatchell said the cheaper airfares would entice people to travel to regional areas.

"Without these kind of fares available it's cost prohibitive, particularly in today's world," he said.

"So we really do need – and we're very grateful that we have – the opportunity to encourage people in today's economic climate to come to our region."

Mr Tatchell said the cheaper tickets between Broome and Kununurra would provide more access to tourism within the Kimberley.

"It gives people the realistic opportunity and affordable price to head off to Kununurra for a weekend and engage with things that normally a 10-hour drive each way prohibits you from doing," he said.

Pilbara absence a 'punch in the guts'

Not included in the program are flights to major towns in the Pilbara, such as Karratha and Port Hedland.

For Pilbara Tourism Association president Barry Harrison, the snub reflects an unfair perception that the region is just a mining area.

"It's a punch in the guts, it really is," Mr Harrison said.

"We've got probably the best national park in Australia at our doorstep in Karijini, and some of the oldest rock art in the world, yet [the] government is still not helping subsidise flights for tourism here."

Mr Harrison revealed the Pilbara Tourism Association has previously sent complaints to the state government about the scheme.

"[We have] again lodged an objection that," he said.

"We're being left behind."

New regional airline welcomes support

Nexus Airlines managing director Michael McConachy said the subsidy would allow residents to explore their backyard.

"We haven't seen fares in the Kimberley like this for many, many years, I've never seen them before — so I think this is a really positive thing," he said.

"To bring the cost of travel down … to assist the region, I'm certainly keen to see that happen with these lower cost fares."

An Airnorth spokesperson said the subsidised flights were perfectly timed for the impending dry season.

"The Kimberley region holds a special place in the heart of Airnorth, having been an integral part of our network for over two decades," they said.

"This initiative underscores our commitment to serving the Kimberley community and making air travel more affordable and convenient for all."

Subsidised flights between Broome and Kununurra will be available between May 1 and August 31, with 4,880 seats on offer.

The news follows Jetstar's announcement that direct flights between Broome and Singapore are set to commence in June.

Broome is a major tourism destination, but it is expensive to travel there from other regional WA towns. (ABC Kimberley: Matt Bamford)
