Northern lights webcams: Watch the aurora borealis online for free

If you're unable to view the northern lights in person, an online live view is the next best (and considerably warmer) thing.

Abisko, Sweden

Levi, finland, spåkenes peninsula, norway, fairbanks, alaska, banff, canada.

The northern lights are a truly remarkable spectacle, with curtains of light dancing across the sky, twisting and turning to the whims of Earth's magnetic field. Nothing quite beats seeing the dazzling performance with your own eyes.

Unfortunately for most of us, we simply don't live far enough north for the aurora borealis or south enough for the aurora australis (also known as the southern lights). Only during heightened solar activity can strong geomagnetic storms shift auroras further from the polar regions and surprise skywatchers at lower latitudes . Lucky for us, there are many aurora webcams at our fingertips, poised to capture the northern lights wherever they may appear.

Auroras are generated when energized particles from the sun collide with Earth's upper atmosphere and are funneled toward the poles by our planet's magnetic field . When the electrically charged particles enter Earth's atmosphere they excite gas atoms and molecules, sparking auroras. The process works in a similar fashion to neon lights: When the molecules and atoms get "excited" by electrons , they must return to their original energy (ground state) and do so by releasing the energy as photons (light). The color of the neon light depends on the gas mixture inside the tube, just like the color of auroras depends on the gas mixture in the atmosphere.

Auroras occur all year round but are more visible during winter's long nights. Here we've rounded up some of the best aurora webcams from around the world. Please note that many aurora webcams are shut off during the summer months due to the extended daylight hours.

Lights Over Lapland is a family-run aurora tour company in Abisko National Park, Sweden. They also have numerous virtual aurora tours to choose from so you can experience the wonder of the northern lights from the comfort of your own home.

Experience the Aurora Sky Station from the Comfort of Your Own Home

Luxurious Magazine

The lure of international travel is powerful right now; however, restrictions are making it more than a little tricky in some countries. However, all is not lost as the people at Lights over Lapland have created the Aurora Sky Station virtual reality experience that allows you to journey to this extraordinary place from the comfort of your own home.

Regular readers of Luxurious Magazine will know that we’re big fans of Sweden and, in particular, Swedish Lapland mainly because of the extraordinary natural beauty, peace and solitude it offers. Sadly, we currently don’t have the time to visit it, so we need to look at other ways, and the next best thing is a virtual reality experience at home.

A young lady experiencing the Northern Lights via a VR headset and a mobile phone

The Aurora Sky Station VR experience gives viewers the chance to head almost 3,000 ft up Mount Noulja by chairlift, where they can take in the extraordinary sights across the Arctic wilderness. Not only will viewers get the opportunity to experience stunning landscapes, but there’s also a certain something called the Northern Lights to see.

The Aurora Sky Station in Abisko National Park is one of the best places to see this fantastic light display, and in addition to this, viewers will get the chance to enjoy even more stunning views across the park and Lake Torneträsk.

The Northern Lights as seen in Sweden

Launched in 2004, the Aurora Sky Station was the original Northern Lights experience in the region. Prior to the pandemic outbreak, it was attracting around 5000 visitors from around the world each year.

Chad Blakley, the founder of Lights Over Lapland, said, “We wanted to give people a flavour of how spectacular the region is and found the best way to do it was to create immersive virtual experiences.”

Adding, “Having lived in Abisko for 14 years and visited the Aurora Sky Station hundreds of times, I can safely say that the new VR experience truly feels like you are there.”

The world-famous Ice Hotel can also be experienced through virtual reality

The Aurora Sky Station experience is part of a new range of virtual tours that includes a dog sledding adventure, reindeer sledding, a visit to the original ICEHOTEL and the opportunity to experience the Northern Lights on an evening Aurora hunt.

Reindeer sledding in Sweden

“If you’ve ever wanted to visit the Arctic and experience the Northern Lights – then come and try it out virtually before coming to see the real thing for yourself,” said Chad.

The latest virtual travel experience from Lights Over Lapland has been released to celebrate the launch of Lights Over Lapland’s new winter Northern Lights experience.

How to see the Northern Lights in person Lights Over Lapland has introduced its new Ultimate Aurora Photo Adventure, which is now available from October to March. The adventure takes guests to the best possible locations where they’ll get the chance to enjoy the Northern Lights.

The price starts from £125 per person and offers three options to see the Lights. Depending on the weather and aurora forecast, guests will hunt for the lights on foot at a nearby Sami teepee, chase the lights in a modern 4×4 van, or ride on a cosy sleigh pulled behind a snowmobile to a wilderness camp.

This adds a new one-day experience to their popular multi-day trips, including the 4-night Aurora Escape.

A different view of the Northern Lights from the Aurora Sky Station

If you’d prefer something a little more special, there is a private tour, which tour costs from £1201.00 per person on a full board basis. The private tour allows you to experience the Northern Lights alongside a range of other Arctic activities with a private guide from the comfort of a traditional three-bedroom house in Absko village.

Virtual Vacations: An Insider Look at the Best Northern Lights Tours

northern lights virtual tour

For many folks, glimpsing the Northern Lights is a top-tier bucket list dream — and for good reason. Even in pictures, the sight is simply mesmerizing. On the other hand, photographs are a safe bet: we’ve all heard the tales of folks traveling to faraway places only to end up disappointed because they didn’t plan accordingly.

Here, we’re giving you a chance to see the Northern Lights virtually, but we’re also delving into the best livestreams, tours, and must-book accommodations to fulfill all of your Aurora Borealis-viewing dreams. Start daydreaming now so that, one day soon, you’ll be able to turn that wanderlust into an unforgettable trip to see the Northern Lights.

What Are the Northern Lights?

Before you go on your virtual or real-life visit, it’s always good to brush up on your knowledge, especially when that knowledge pertains to an astrological phenomenon. So, what exactly happens during a Northern Lights show?

northern lights virtual tour

Known as Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights occur when sun particles collide with the Earth’s magnetic field. The top and bottom of the field are curved, touching the Earth at its poles since the magnetic field is weaker in those places.

Once the collision occurs, the particles make the unique light spectacle we known as the Northern Lights. The lights are typically yellow and green — the color is produced by oxygen molecules, which can be found 60 miles above Earth’s surface. However, there are many other (slightly rarer) colors associated with the Aurora Borealis. For example, oxygen located 200 miles above Earth’s surface produces red auroras, while nitrogen produces blue or purple auroras.

These Are the Ideal Conditions for the Northern Lights

Most often, the lights are visible from early August to late April. But, the truth is, you’ll need to strategically plan your visit to get the most out of this phenomenon. If you’re not a fan of long, cold nights, this won’t work in your favor since the best time to take a trip is some time between November and March. However, these months also tend to have the most snow, which could make your trip slightly unpredictable.

northern lights virtual tour

To see the best of the Aurora Borealis you’ll need:

  • A clear, cloudless night
  • A good location, away from cities and light pollution
  • Warm clothes
  • Patience — after all, you may need to wait for quite a while!

As we all know, weather can be very unpredictable. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to follow the Aurora Borealis forecast in order to truly determine whether or not your visit will reward you with a clear sight of the Northern Lights.

Captivating Places to Watch Aurora Borealis From

If virtual isn’t your thing and you still prefer to see the lights live, there are a couple of places that will give you the best possible views of the Northern Lights. Known as the “Aurora Zone,” these places include Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, and Canada. Each country has a couple of places that will give you a clear view of the lights — well, so long as the conditions are working in your favor, of course.

northern lights virtual tour

No matter where you try, you should always get as far away from nearby cities; even the slightest pollution can impact visibility. If you feel uncomfortable embarking on a Northern Lights trek on your own, we recommend taking a tour. After all, sometimes that professional guide can really give you a leg up in securing the best available view.

Finland: In Finland, the Northern Lights are visible 200 days a year. In fact, it’s considered one of the best locations to get a magical view. If you want the best spot possible, go north and visit the Utsjoki village. One of the best accommodations to enjoy a private view of the lights is the charming Aurora River House .

Sweden: September is an ideal time for watching the Northern Lights in Sweden. For the best view, you should head far north to the town of Kiruna. If you’re looking to enjoy the Aurora Borealis from your doorstep (and cuddle with some huskies while doing so), book your stay at Husky Dreams .

Norway: From September to April, Norway is a fabulous spot to see the Northern Lights. Without a doubt, the most popular location is Tromso, which boasts many wonderful accommodations that allow you to watch the show from a fireside window.

Iceland: Iceland is a popular destination for Aurora Borealis enthusiasts. Reykjavík is a perfect location; however, as it’s a city, you may find that taking a Northern Lights tour with a professional will allow you to get the best possible view.

Greenland: With 300 clear nights per year, Greenland’s Kangerlussuaq is one of the most popular Aurora Borealis destinations. Because you can’t stay at Kangerlussuaq, a guided tour is best.

Canada: Last but not least, is Canada, which also gives you a chance to see the lights in action. Yellowknife is reportedly one of the best places in the world to witness the Northern Lights in person. In fact, you can find accommodations that allow you to enjoy the view right from your balcony.

Take a Virtual Vacation Instead

So, what if you really want to see the Northern Lights in the summer? Well, thanks to some innovative technology, you can! We recommend trying a 360 virtual tour or watching one of many high-definition Aurora Borealis videos, all of which will leave a lasting impression.

Looking for something a little more spur of the moment? You can also enjoy livestreams of the Northern Lights from many locations described above. Not only is this a fun way to enjoy the spectacle from home, but livestreams are a great way to learn more about planning an in-person trip. Thanks to the power of YouTube’s livestreams, you can see the Aurora Borealis from several different perspectives and easily travel from one place to another, all from the comfort of your sofa.

You can watch the Northern Lights and go dog sledding from your sofa with new virtual tours online

YOU can now experience a virtual Northern Lights tour online from the comfort of your sofa.

Arctic experts have created three travel experiences, including reindeer riding and husky trips, for people to enjoy without leaving the house during self-isolation.

You can enjoy a virtual experience tour of the Northern Lights, dog-sledding and even a visit to the Ice Hotel

Specialist photography company Lights over Lapland created the Northern Lights adventure tours around the Abisko National Park in Sweden.

The region is within the Arctic Circle and is a great place to see the Aurora Borealis.

The company asked some of the best photographers and videographers in the world to create the experiences for people to access online

The tours don't just include a view of the Northern Lights - you can also 'visit' the famous Icehotel as well as meet huskies and reindeers.

A dog-sled or reindeer-sled will take you through some of the tours too.

The free online tours explore Sweden, all available through specialist photography website Lights Over Lapland

Lights over Lapland founder Chad Blakely spoke about parts of the tour to Forbes : "After strolling through the birch trees, we lead you to the shore of Lake Torneträsk where you can take in all its scenic views before visiting a friend of mine who is a reindeer herder and riding in a sleigh behind one of his reindeer – just like he and his family have done for centuries."

If you can't commit to a tour, then they also have a live Northern Lights cam, with 360 degree views.

The project began last year, to open up the experience to people who couldn't experience in person for themselves.

Chad said: "I had the realisation about how incredible virtual reality is earlier this winter.

"Little did we know how relevant and necessary this would be."

The Northern Lights are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun, smashing into gaseous particles in our planet's atmosphere.

This causes bright, colourful dancing lights in white, green, pink and purple that illuminate the sky and are considered an incredible sight to behold.

Colour variations occur when different types of gas particles collide with the charged particles.

Where can you see the Northern Lights?

Northern lights travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are at their peak from late September to late March.

Where can I see the Northern Lights?

The best places to see the Northern Lights are all located in the “Auroral zone” – an area that stretches around the Northern Hemisphere at a latitude of about 66 to 69 degrees north – including parts of:

What causes the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with elements in our atmosphere (such as nitrogen and oxygen), creating brightly colored dancing displays of light.

Am I guaranteed to see the Northern Lights?

While Northern Light displays can never be guaranteed, as they are a natural phenomenon, our local leaders do their best to ensure you get to see nature’s greatest spectacle.

Can the Northern Lights be predicted?

Yes, the Northern Lights can be predicted to some extent.

The activity level of the Northern Lights depends on many things (of which some are predictable and some are somewhat random), including sunspots, coronal holes, solar flares and geomagnetic activity.

If you’re not an astronomer, your best bet is to check the local Aurora forecast – a KP-index number of 3 or higher means you have a good chance of seeing the Lights.

Can I see the Northern Lights with the naked eye?

Yes, you can see the Northern Lights with the naked eye. Humans can most easily see the green and white of the lights at night. A camera, however, does not have the same limitations as the human eye, so the colors may appear brighter and more brilliant in photos.

Can I photograph the Northern Lights?

Of course! There is no magic recipe for capturing the Northern Lights. Still, you’ll want to set your camera on a tripod and ensure it has a manual mode functionality, so you can adjust the aperture and shutter speed to capture the spectacular display best.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Aurora Expeditions™

An aurora is a natural light display that can appear as brilliant green, yellow, red, blue and purple light patterns, spirals or dynamic flickers covering the night sky.

The Aurora Borealis originates on the sun’s surface with a massive explosion of electromagnetic matter, which projects a stream of charged particles known as solar wind into space. When these particles approach Earth a few nights later, they distort our magnetic field. The excited, ionised atoms that enter our atmosphere through the poles emit light which, when emitted on a large scale, causes the phenomenon of the Southern and Northern Lights.

There is no best place to witness an aurora which, in our opinion, only adds to the mystery and appeal surrounding them. It is most frequently visible in high-latitude regions in the Arctic and Antarctica, but most accessible between 10° and 20° of the North Pole in a band called the ‘auroral zone’. It’s important to understand that this oval-shaped halo can shift slightly, and there are many factors at play that affect how bright the lights appear or if it’s possible to see them at all.

To increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, be prepared to venture into the heart of the Arctic, to destinations such as Greenland, Iceland, Northern Canada and Northern Norway. While aurora activity happens year-round, the best time to witness the Northern Lights is during the long winter months, when the windows for viewing them each night are longer.

Why Join a Northern Lights Cruise with Aurora Expeditions?

First, what is this strange natural phenomenon? An aurora is a natural light display that can appear as brilliant green, yellow, red, blue and purple light patterns, spirals or dynamic flickers covering the night sky. The aurora borealis originates on the sun’s surface with a massive explosion of electromagnetic matter, which projects a stream of charged particles known as solar wind into space. When these particles approach Earth a few nights later, they distort our magnetic field. The excited, ionised atoms that enter our atmosphere through the poles emit light which, when emitted on a large scale, causes the phenomenon of the Southern and Northern Lights. Northern Lights experiences are best with a dark sky as the aurora is not strong enough to outshine the sunlight.

There is no best place to witness an aurora which, in our opinion, only adds to the mystery and appeal surrounding them. This is why Aurora Expeditions’ Northern Lights tours don’t focus on one spot or location. The Northern Lights are most frequently visible in high-latitude regions in the Arctic, but most accessible between 10° and 20° of the North Pole in a band called the ‘auroral zone’. It’s important to understand that this oval-shaped halo can shift slightly, and there are many factors at play, like weather conditions and clear nights, that affect how bright the lights appear or if it’s possible to see them at all so our Northern Lights tour reflects this.

While aurora borealis activity happens year-round, the best time for a Northern Lights adventure is during the long winter months, when the windows for viewing them each night are longer and the skies darker. The season in the Northern Hemisphere is generally from September through April.

Unique Northern Lights Experiences

Our Northern Lights cruise sticks to the aurora zone in the Arctic Circle, but seeing the lights dance is only one part of your Northern Lights adventure. Exploring the polar regions provides you with opportunities like no other.

By night you will seek out the Northern Lights, but by day we will try to get you off the ship 2-3 times per day (depending on the weather and conditions) so you can get the most out of your time in the Arctic. Walking and bird-watching are popular activities as they offer a chance to witness the unique wildlife in the destinations you visit.

Take a polar plunge in the icy waters of the Arctic Circle, or stay above the water on a Zodiac cruise through the fields of icebergs. Zodiac cruises allow you to get closer to some of the wildlife and landscapes you’ll see throughout your Northern Lights tour. If you have the necessary experience you should also consider adding sea kayaking to your Northern Lights itinerary.

Enrichment is an important component of our expeditions – we hope that you will leave changed and become lifelong ambassadors for the natural world and the wild, important destinations we visit. Your world-class Expedition Team will be on hand to answer your questions about the aurora borealis and how it comes to appear in the night sky, Arctic wildlife , geological formations and the history of the places we visit.

Northern Lights Cruise Regions

Greenland Northern Lights

While Greenland is one of the best countries in the world for witnessing the Northern Lights, getting there can be challenging and often what holds people back. The good news is that, once you’re there, you can see the Northern Lights from almost anywhere in the country – even in the heart of its capital city, Nuuk! This is because Greenland’s population is tiny and scattered across small, remote communities, so it has minimal light pollution. Not many Northern Lights tours go to Greenland but Aurora Expeditions Northern Lights cruises explore using a small expedition ship which makes it easy to visit the prime locations in Greenland to see the Northern Lights.

Some other superb options for aurora viewing in Greenland are Kangerlussuaq, Sisimiut, Ilulissat, Kulusuk and Tasiilaq.

Zodiac cruising in Svalbard

Svalbard Northern Lights

Every year, millions of tourists flock to the Arctic for a chance to witness the phenomenon of the Northern Lights. However, few venture to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, located between the Norwegian mainland and the North Pole, which offers exceptional conditions to see the Northern Lights, not to mention dramatic fjords, rugged mountain ranges and a huge variety of unique wildlife, including majestic polar bears.

Northern Lights display over a frozen lake in northern Canada

Northern Lights Canada

Northern Canada is the best place to see the Northern Lights in Canada, in remote places with minimal light pollution. Nunavut in the heart of Canada’s High Arctic is a prime aurora borealis viewing country, with its close proximity to the North Pole and vast expanses of tundra. Consider visiting a remote traditional Inuit community for an unparalleled night of dazzling aurora displays.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland

Northern Lights Iceland

Aside from volcanoes, glaciers and geysers, one of the main reasons people have Iceland on their travel bucket list is because they dream of seeing the Northern Lights on display. Iceland is a sparsely populated country, so you don’t have to go far to get away from light pollution.

With longer hours with dark skies and clear night skies, the Westfjords and North Iceland are the best regions to head to if you want to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. There are many fantastic remote locations in South Iceland where you can witness the aurora, including the popular Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The Seltjarnarnes peninsula is a prime viewing area as there is minimal light pollution. There are also plenty of places near Reykjavík you can head to if you’re short on time, including Thingvellir National Park.

Northern Lights display in the Lofted Islands in Norway

Northern Lights Norway

Norway is often the first country that comes to mind when people think of the Northern Lights. The Northern Lights are a prominent feature of the night sky throughout the country and have even influenced folklore and indigenous culture. Because Norway is so long, the seasons change at different times, with summer lasting longer in the south and winter lasting longer in the north. As a rule of thumb, the further north you go, the longer your window is for seeing them.

The ‘auroral zone’ starts in Northern Norway just above the Lofoten Islands and extends up the coast to the North Cape (Nordkapp) and beyond. You will observe the same light display from anywhere in this region, but from a different angle. Some of our favourite places in Northern Norway to witness the Northern Lights include Tromsø, Kirkenes, the Lofoten Islands, Bodø and the North Cape.

Northern Lights Cruise Activities

See The Northern Lights with Aurora Expeditions and our Expedition Team will take you on excursions unique to the High Arctic, fully included in the cost of your expedition. For those interested in a little extra excitement, there are optional activities designed to get you closer to the action. Our Northern Lights expeditions provide a mix of comfort and adventure; for those willing to explore the Arctic the memories will last a lifetime.

The absence of sunlight allows passengers to fully immerse themselves in the captivating light displays against the Arctic or sub-Arctic landscapes. Aurora Expeditions carefully schedules these voyages to coincide with peak Northern Lights activity, ensuring passengers have the best chances of experiencing this celestial spectacle in its full splendour.

What our guests say, five star service.

We’d highly recommend using Heimir at Aurora Experts – Iceland. He had a small group guarantee, is so knowledgeable on the island, the lights and so much more. He had some Icelandic treats for us to sample while we were waiting for activity including some much needed hot chocolate. We could tell it was as fun for him as it was us. So happy we booked with him instead of one of the big tour groups. The personal service was unforgettable!

THE BEST AURORA EXPERIENCE

Unreal experience Aurora Experts in Iceland, the enthusiasm of the tour guide on was amazing, they really want us to had the best experience ever, they had jumpsuits to keep us warm which was a lifesaver and they had traditional Icelandic food. They also took amazing photos of us all, and the overall experience was incredible. Cannot recommend it enough. They let us stay for as long as we wanted, and that also made the experience even more enjoyable. it was AMAZING, lifetime experience.

Bruna Dontal – 18. November 2021

Highly Recommend - Incredible Experience

This tour was absolutely incredible! Heimir stayed in constant contact with us throughout the week on weather conditions and the best day/time to see the lights. We were able to see the lights and had amazing pictures of us taken. Despite it being cold, they provided extremely warm overalls that kept us comfortable and even brought traditional Icelandic foods for us to try which were amazing! They let us stay as long as we wanted so we could really enjoy the moment. This experience was top of my bucket list, and I highly recommend Heimer and Aurora Experts – Iceland for all future Northern Lights Tours!

10/10 best tour guides

These guys are amazing!! Heimir had excellent communication with our group to make sure we had the best chance of seeing the lights. The whole experience was perfect. We saw the lights and got wonderful professional photos! They also make sure everyone is warm with the provided jumpsuits. We will definitely book with Heimir the next time we’re in Iceland.

Kristin G – 18. November 2021

The BEST Northern Lights Tour!!

Our group of 7 had the absolute best time!! We were thrilled to find a personalized experience and were blown away with the communication with Heimir prior to our tour and our overall tour! I felt like I couldn’t have trusted a better person to give us the best opportunity to see the northern lights on our trip of a lifetime! We saw them, have wonderful pictures to remember them by and also got to experience local eats and drinks during the tour! It truly couldn’t have been better. We have already told others planning their trips about this tour and we plan to come back!!

Heather – 17. November 2021

The personal service was unforgettable!

Just got home from our week long trip where the weather was cold, cloudy and not the best for viewing the lights. We had a KP2 on our last night so we went for it with help from a private guide that was bound and determined to make sure we didn’t leave the island without a show.

Don't Take Our Word For It

Take a look at these amazing words shared by the wonderful people who have experienced our tour!

“If you are dying to see the aurora, Michael with Face the Outdoors is a must. Not only is he incredibly down to earth and knowledgeable he is also going to do everything possible to help you see the aurora. The lights are out often evidently but really hard to just see anywhere. We visited during a very snowy week and he drove us out to his cabin several hours from Fairbanks. It was a very safe and warm drive. We even saw a moose! Once you get there you can wait in the warmth with snacks and drinks or hang outside in a huge viewing area. If you choose to stay in he will radio up when the aurora begins to show. We loaded to head back around 3am and he stopped and asked if anyone had anywhere to be by 6. No one did, so we turned around and went back to his cabin to see the coolest band appear. That alone makes him one in a million because he truly wants you to experience the magic and will inconvenience himself to give you the best possible chance. I would recommend Michael over and over again.”

“Seeing the northern lights was on our bucket list, and it was easily knocked off due to Michael and face the outdoors!!!! From start to finish this was a stressless experience. We were picked up from our hotel promptly in a very comfortable van. While driving to the amazing lodge Michale explain to us what to expect. We arrived at his beautiful house that had floor to ceiling windows so if you chose to you could see the amazing sky from the comfort of indoors. He also provided snacks cold and hot drinks. His lodge is located in a very secluded area surrounded by complete darkness. This provided a very intimate way to view the Aurora. Michael wanted us to see the lights as bad as we wanted to. He offered to drive us to another place if that meant we would get a better viewing of the Aurora. That did not happen his location did not disappoint. The pictures that Michael took of our family will cherish forever!!”

“If you want the best Aurora tour, one that will not just take you to the same places all the other tours take you to, if you want a tour that will give you the best opportunity to see the Aurora, then this is the tour!!! We had an incredible time!! Micheal is a true Alaskan and offers his expertise is seeing the lights and providing you with the best opportunity. Comfortable ride to and from his home, great photography tips, and a beautiful place to wait for the show to begin. Thanks for making my 50th birthday trip the best ever!!!”

Frequently Asked Questions

We’re excited to share that our season runs from August 20th to April 20th, which is the perfect time to catch a glimpse of the amazing aurora phenomena! The more active the sun is, the greater chance you have to witness something truly magical, but since the aurora is a natural wonder, it can be difficult to predict specific dates or times. Nonetheless, we’re confident that you’ll have an unforgettable experience during your visit.

Our tour begins promptly at 8pm. You can sit back and relax as your ride picks you up from your hotel lobby. We guarantee it will be worth staying up late until we return to Fairbanks at 5am. Witnessing the northern lights will be the highlight of our tour and we’ll be there to guide you through every step. The best viewing times typically occur between midnight to 3am so you will have plenty of time to experience the beauty of this natural light phenomenon.

Welcome to the wild side of Alaska – where the majestic moose, sly foxes, fierce wolves, and mysterious lynx roam free! And guess what? They love to make guest appearances while we’re checking out the incredible aurora lights! So keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready – you never know who might pop up for a quick photoshoot!

Cell phones have improved significantly in their ability to take pictures in low-light conditions, including capturing the aurora. However, the effectiveness of newer phones in capturing the aurora will depend on their strength and capabilities. In such cases, a tripod becomes essential for obtaining high-quality pictures, regardless of whether you decide to use a camera or a mobile phone.

Alaska can get pretty chilly, so make sure you dress appropriately for the weather if you’re planning a visit. It’s stunningly beautiful, so be sure to pack warm layers so you can stay outside to take pictures of the aurora and see the dancing lights. If you don’t have the right gear, don’t worry – you can also rent warmer clothes while you are here.

“Book your trip as soon as possible to catch the amazing aurora displays during the upcoming solar maximum. Increased solar activity means more frequent sightings, and you don’t want to miss out. Don’t delay and secure your spot now.”

Package Overview

Russian winters are harsh yet extraordinarily beautiful, and it’s the lands above the Arctic Circle where winter’s transformational effects are most keenly felt. The Kola Peninsula is home to people and animals who survive and thrive despite the chilling temperatures. This Murmansk northern lights tour shows you two sides to life in the Russian Winter, from the grandiose cities of Moscow and St Petersburg to the polar landscapes of the remote Kola Peninsula. On this trip to see the northern lights in Russia, we begin in Moscow, where the city’s monuments, parks and churches are transformed into a scene from a winter fairy tale, all icing sugar snow and shimmering lights. Next, we head north to Saint Petersburg, where you can enjoy world-class attractions like the Hermitage, free of summer crowds. Forging closer to Arctic Circle, we’ll stop to admire the Ruskeala Mountain Park and historic Kizhi Island. Finally, we’ll arrive in the Kola Peninsula by train. Discover the customs of the indigenous Saami and traverse their snowy lands in sleds pulled by huskies and reindeer. Finally, we reach Murmansk, the largest city in the Kola Peninsula. While there’s the possibility to observe Aurora Borealis throughout our time in the Kola, Murmansk and its area is regarded as one of the best places in the world to experience the psychedelic light display in all its awe-inspiring glory.Services of the guide from the Polar Geophysical Institute (PGI) for observing Aurora Borealis. Day wise Itinerary

Day 1 : Welcome to Moscow

Arrive in Moscow and transfer to your centrally located hotel. Get your first taste of life in the Russian metropolis, exploring the city at your leisure.

Day 2 : Moscow City Tour

It’s time to get more deeply acquainted with Russia’s capital, starting with a guided tour of the Kremlin and its cathedrals. Stroll at the iconic Red Square and take a short excursion on the famous Moscow Subway.

Day 3 : Fast Train to St Petersburg

Spend the morning your way. In the afternoon, take the fast train, which reaches St Petersburg in approximately four hours.

Day 4 : St Petersburg City Tour

Our morning excursion provides an opportunity to see St Petersburg’s most famous monuments, bridges, embankments and parks. Wander down the Nevsky Prospekt, visit St Isaac’s Cathedral, the Winter Place, and other places tied to the city’s fascinating heroes and historical events.

Day 5 : Day Trip to Pushkin

Today we head out of St Petersburg for a day excursion to the nearby town of Pushkin, home of the Tsarskoe Selo (Tsar’s Village). Admire the baroque Catherine Palace, stroll through Catherine and Alexander Parks and visit the famous Amber room. After lunch in the grounds, we transfer to Pavlovsk, a suburb south of Pushkin, for a horse and carriage ride in Pavlovsk Park.

Day 6 : The State Hermitage Museum

On our last day in St Petersburg, we pay a visit to its most lauded attraction - the State Hermitage Museum, which houses some 3 million masterpieces, spread across six magnificent historic buildings, including the splendid Winter Palace. Departure by overnight train to Petrozavodsk in Karelia.

Day 7 : Karelia: Ruskeala Park

Embark on a scenic, several hour journey to the Ruskeala Mountain Park. Unique for its waterfalls and varicoloured marble quarries. The return journey will take us back to Petrozavodsk by late evening.

Day 8 : Karelia: Kizhi Island

Today we visit the Kizhi Island in the centre of Lake Obega. Getting here in winter requires a ride on a hovercraft. Only a small rural settlement remains on Kizhi, and the island has become an open-air museum with over 80 historical wooden structures, some dating to the 14th century. After returning to Petrozavodsk, it’s time to get ready for our overnight train, which will take us above the Arctic Circle.

Day 9 : Kola Peninsula

We have now crossed the northern polar circle and arrived in the small town of Olengorsk in "Russian Laplandia". We head straight to a Siberian husky farm, where and spend time getting to know the charming resident dogs here as well as their reindeer stablemates. Today you may be lucky enough to witness the glow of the Aurora Borealis.

Day 10 : The Snow Village and Khibiny Mountains

This morning, our destination is the Snow Village, which has been painstakingly constructed almost entirely out of ice and snow and features ornately decorated buildings, sculptures and labyrinthine tunnels. The afternoon sees a change of pace, with the chance to carve it up on an easy snowmobile safari in the Khibiny Mountains. Don't forget to look up for Aurora's dance in the sky.

Day 11 : Saami Settlement

Head to one of the largest Saami settlements in the Kola Peninsula, where many traditional dwellings are still in use. You’ll get the chance to learn about the ancient Saami culture. In the afternoon, we proceed to Murmansk.

Day 12 : Murmansk City Tour

Your Murmansk sightseeing trip will take in the Naval Museum or the Historical Museum, and the world’s first nuclear icebreaker ship, the Lenin. Spend your free evening discovering the surprisingly vibrant nightlife in this quirky Russian outpost. As this is your last night in the Arctic, don’t forget to look up!

Day 13 : Departure From Murmansk

After breakfast, it’s time to check out of our Murmansk hotel. You’ll be transferred to the airport to catch a flight back to either Moscow or on to your next destination.

northern lights virtual tour

TA forums are not a free travel agency, it's a forum where independent travellers share thoughts and tips. You need to do a little bit of research on your own and come up with a first plan. You need to figure out how much time you want to allocate to each location, and how to travel betwween them. You will find a lot of information on the internet or looking at other discussions. If you can't do that (there can be plenty of good reasons) then what you need is a real travel agent.

northern lights virtual tour

How many days do you have in total ? If your time is limited, you will spend half the time in transit. Not the best use of time.

If Northern Lights are the main focus, you would need to allocate enough time for that, spending enough time beyond the arctic circle. You can do all sorts of winter adventures in Tromsø, no need to go to Kiruna from that and I do not believe Kiruna will add to the experience.

Never been to Russia, so better ask on the relevant forums for that.

For major cities you should allocate 3 nights/2 full days minimum.

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports

N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.

Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.

Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.

Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .

The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.

Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.

The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .

Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.

One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.

Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."

The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .

Knewz.com reported previously:

“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].

One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”

The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.

Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.

Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.

Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.

The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.
