Prodigy revealed as next series in Star Trek franchise for Paramount+

Editor at Large for Entertainment Weekly, host of Outlander Live! on EW Radio, and Mark Harmon enthusiast. Yes, I know the guacamole is extra.

new star trek cartoon show

This one is for the kids: Paramount+ revealed Wednesday that Prodigy will be the next installment in the Star Trek franchise . Developed by Kevin and Dan Hageman ( Trollhunters ), the CG-animated series focuses on a group of "lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation," according to the streaming service.

Prodigy marks the first time a Star Trek series has been developed specifically for a younger audience. The first 10 episodes of the series will premiere on Paramount+ this year before moving to its sister cable channel Nickelodeon .

With the addition of Prodigy , there will be five series from the Star Trek universe on the newly revamped Paramount+ (formerly known as CBS All Access), which launches March 4. The others are Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Picard , the animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks , and the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The digital platform will also offer all 726 episodes from the six classic Star Trek series, as well as several of the Star Trek films.

"The way we design our universe is that each show has to have its own very unique identity, so you don't feel what you're getting from one show is what you can get from another show," Alex Kurtzman , executive producer of the Star Trek universe, tells EW. "It really grabs hold of the things that Trek stands for that have kept it so alive for 55 years. It's about a space family. It's about optimism. It's about science. It's about reaching for the best in ourselves. It's about the belief that the best of ourselves will emerge in the future and become this amazing federation of planets. It's incredibly aspirational. And I've been saying for a while now how important I think it is that we get to younger audiences so we can grow with the franchise."

And Kurtzman and his team have no plans to stop making more series for every member of the family. "I think the beauty of the Star Trek universe is there's so much story," he adds. "There are so many amazing characters. There's so much world-building to be done. The key is to make sure there's no redundancy. We're going to be exploring new areas of the universe that haven't been explored yet. We may explore different timelines. We will certainly be thinking about targeting shows to different demographics. I think there's such a limitless appetite for Star Trek ."

Paramount+ is expected to include live news, original series, and sports content, as well as on-demand content from other Viacom channels like MTV, BET, Comedy Central, and CBS. There will also be movies from Paramount Pictures.

Star Trek Prodigy

The “ Star Trek ” Universe is making its permanent home on Paramount Plus , including the premiere of the latest “Trek” iteration, the animated kids series “Star Trek: Prodigy,” ViacomCBS announced during its Investors Day presentation on Wednesday.

Originally conceived for Nickelodeon, “Prodigy,” from Kevin and Dan Hageman (Netflix’s “Trollhunters”), will now premiere on the streamer later in 2021. After its 10-episode run has concluded there, the show — about a coterie of alien kids who commander a seemingly abandoned Starfleet vessel — will air again on the linear Nickelodeon channel. The network also released a first look at the bridge crew from the show, highlighting that none of the main characters on “Prodigy” will be human, a first for a “Trek” series.

The move is part of a wider official strategy of placing every current and former “Trek” TV series on Paramount Plus, including new seasons of “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Lower Decks” which are also set to premiere in 2021.

'The Beautiful Summer' Review: A Young Woman Blooms Into Herself in Gorgeously Mounted Italian Period Drama

“It does speak to having a franchise that is unique to Paramount Plus, and we’re very excited about that,” Paramount Plus programming chief Julie McNamara tells Variety. “There is a kind of franchise strategy, which is the notion that if you execute new versions of this really strong IP that you have well, you’re going to drive people across the paywall.”

Popular on Variety

Along with “Prodigy,” “Discovery” and “Lower Decks,” Paramount Plus is also in active production on the second season of “Star Trek: Picard,” and the new series “Star Trek: Brave New Worlds.” It’s the largest expansion of the “Trek” franchise since its inception in 1966, but unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and recent plans for the expansion of the “Star Wars” franchise on Disney Plus, don’t expect these “Trek” series to be unfolding within a closely knit storytelling universe.

“We’re aiming to have our shows feel unique and different from each other,” Alex Kurtzman, the overall executive producer for the “Star Trek” Universe, tells Variety. “We want to give everybody a reason to watch each show.”

While fans will see “interconnectedness” within the shows, Kurtzman says, there aren’t plans to tell a single cohesive story. “That’s a lot of fun, but our goal is not to make it so insular that if you haven’t seen the show you’re lost when you watch another show,” he says.

Kurtzman and McNamara say there are still “conversations” about a new “Star Trek” series around Michelle Yeoh’s Philippa Georgiou and the mysterious Section 31, and there are other “Trek” shows in development that haven’t been previously announced. But they emphasized that the current five-series slate will likely not expand further until at least one of the shows runs its course.

“We’re very careful about curating the pacing — the number of shows at any given time — and what those shows are, so that we make sure that it’s always exciting when there’s a new track show coming out,” says McNamara. The rough schedule, she says, is to debut “a new ‘Trek’ a quarter” on Paramount Plus.

“Whether there’s a show that comes up that feels additive and we should add that into the mix, or waiting for attrition of another ‘Trek’ show, we feel good about where we are,” she says. McNamara said that by “attrition,” she means either a “Trek” show “aging out” naturally, or — in an allusion to 80-year-old “Picard” star Patrick Steward, “perhaps an older lead is only committed to a certain number of seasons and and therefore we move on from that.”

Specifically with “Prodigy,” McNamara says another factor that contributed to the decision to move the show to streaming involved data from Paramount Plus’s predecessor, CBS All Access, that showed subscribers who watched “Trek” shows also watched Nickelodeon’s animated series “The Legend of Korra.”

“It seemed very wise for us to access both the ‘Star Trek’ fan base that’s already on the platform and also kids,” she says. “Those are the two groups that you want to reach.”

At the same time, ViacomCBS didn’t want to lose the opportunity to use “Prodigy” to entice a new generation to become “Star Trek” fans, which drove the decision to re-air the show on Nick.

“It’s a great way to expose children to ‘Star Trek,’ who may be on Nickelodeon to watch other franchises,” said McNamara.

Every New Live-Action Star Trek Show & Movie On Paramount+ Is A Discovery Spinoff

  • Star Trek on Paramount+ thrives with Discovery spinoffs like Strange New Worlds, Starfleet Academy, and Section 31.
  • Animated Star Trek faces an uncertain future as Lower Decks and Prodigy conclude their runs, leaving fans hoping for more.
  • Discovery's success continues because Paramount+'s next 3 Star Trek shows and movie are Discovery spinoffs.

Star Trek is scaling down on Paramount+, but all three scheduled live-action TV series and movies are spinoffs of Star Trek: Discovery . Recently ending after 5 seasons, Star Trek: Discovery reignited the Star Trek TV franchise after 12 years. In 2017 and 2018, Discovery 's success served as a cornerstone of the fledgling CBS All-Access streaming service, which later became Paramount+. Thanks to Discovery, a new era of Star Trek streaming series began .

Star Trek on Paramount+ overseen by Alex Kurtzman achieved an amazing apex in 2022, with a new episode of 5 different Star Trek series streaming almost every Thursday of the year on Paramount+. Patrick Stewart was coaxed back to the franchise to headline 3 seasons of Star Trek: Picard . Star Trek also embraced animation for the first time since the 1970s, with Star Trek: Lower Decks , the franchise's first half-hour comedy, and Star Trek: Prodigy, a CGI all-ages animated series designed to bring new young viewers to Star Trek. Arguably the most popular current Star Trek series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , also launched in 2022. In the next two years, the live-action Star Trek shows and movie on Paramount+ will carry on Star Trek: Discovery' s legacy .

Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are all Nielsen Top 10 streaming series.

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

Star Trek is ending series like Discovery and Lower Decks but renewed Strange New Worlds while setting up new streaming and theatrical movies.

Star Treks Next Live-Action Shows & Movies Are Discovery Spinoffs

Strange new worlds, section 31, and starfleet academy all come out of discovery.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Star Trek: Section 31 , and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy are all live-action spinoffs of Star Trek: Discovery . Star Trek 's first feature film made for streaming on Paramount+, Star Trek: Section 31 was originally planned as an ongoing series starring Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh reprising her Star Trek: Discover y antiheroine, Emperor Philippa Georgiou. The COVID-19 pandemic and other factors shifted Section 31 from a series to a movie , which premieres in 2025 on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy scored Academy Award caliber headliner actors Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti.

The popularity of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck), and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) in Star Trek: Discovery season 2 directly led to a spinoff, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Now considered Paramount+'s flagship Star Trek series , Strange New Worlds season 3 will premiere in 2025 on Paramount+, with season 4 already in preproduction. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which has executive producer Alex Kurtzman as co-showrunner, is also a direct spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery seasons 4 and 5, continuing Disco 's 32nd-century era.

A new Star Trek live-action half-hour comedy created by Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien is in development, but it's not clear if it's a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery.

What Happens To Animated Star Trek After Lower Decks Ends?

This is why netflix needs to give star trek: prodigy season 3.

The changing nature of streaming and the pending sale of Paramount has made casualties of Star Trek 's animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy . Paramount+ abruptly canceled Star Trek: Prodigy in 2023, purging the show from its service. But Star Trek: Prodigy 's rabid fan base responded and helped secure Netflix as Star Trek: Prodigy 's new streaming home. Following the premiere of Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, however, Netflix has yet to exercise its option to order more Prodigy .

2024 marks the end of animated Star Trek for the foreseeable future.

Star Trek: Lower Decks also ends its run on Paramount+ with season 5. However, there are hopes Lower Decks can continue on another streaming service, like Star Trek: Prodigy . Unfortunately, without new Lower Decks or Prodigy ordered, 2024 marks the end of animated Star Trek for the foreseeable future. This is especially disappointing considering Lower Decks and Prodigy have delivered some of the most insightful, innovative, and crowd-pleasing Star Trek of the modern era. Unfortunately, neither Lower Decks nor Prodigy are live-action or direct spinoffs of Star Trek: Discovery, which is what Paramount+ is banking Star Trek 's next few years on.

New Star Trek shows: every future series, from Strange New Worlds to Lower Decks

From Lower Decks to Strange New Worlds, what's coming up?

new star trek cartoon show

It's a rich time for new Star Trek content, with streaming service CBS All Access building much of its content strategy around expanding the sci-fi franchise. If you're outside of the US, too, it's been pretty easy to keep up with it all, since Picard has released internationally on Amazon Prime Video, while Netflix has the rights to Discovery.

In April 2019, overseer Alex Kurtzman told THR that "The idea is to always have something" Star Trek-related on TV. "Two years from now, a show will end, there will be a little breath and then another show will begin."

While that ambitious plan for 2021 might be slowed down by this year's coronavirus-based TV production headaches, there's no doubt that CBS has enough content in the pipeline to back that up.  Seven Star Trek shows are publicly known right now, though a couple don't have titles or even a premise yet, and this includes ongoing seasons of Picard and Discovery.

Do Star Trek fans like the shows being made? As with any franchise that has a long and complicated history, it's really hard to figure out what the consensus is on Trek as it stands. But the volume and tonal range of what's in the works surely has to excite an audience that once enjoyed 18 years of unbroken Trek shows.

We expect to learn a lot more about these series when Star Trek takes over a whole series of panels at Comic Con at Home, starting on July 23.

Below, we'll talk you through every Star Trek TV show currently confirmed to be in the works, so you can figure out if you want to watch them or skip them.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Release date: August 6

Getting Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan was quite a win for this first adult animated Star Trek series, which takes place on the lower decks of the Cerritos, a less important Starfleet vessel. It's the first Star Trek animated series in decades, and features a pretty big name voice cast, including The Boys ' Jack Quaid.

McMahan wrote one of the all-time best Rick and Morty episodes, Total Rickall, and co-created the recent Hulu series Solar Opposities, so hopefully the end result here will be good. Two seasons are on the way.

We're not sure where it'll be streaming outside of the US yet, though.

Star Trek Discovery season 3

new star trek cartoon show

Expected release date: late 2020

A third season of CBS All Access' flagship show Star Trek: Discovery finished filming a while back, and post-production has been ongoing. We're expecting this one to debut some time after Lower Decks has finished rolling out its 10 weekly episodes.

Star Trek: Discovery season 3 has a killer hook, taking viewers 1,000 years into the future of the Star Trek timeline, which will presumably give the writers a lot of scope to tell big stories without any lore-based restrictions.

Season 2 spent a little too long in the shadow of legacy characters, as well-acted as they were, so hopefully this season will shift focus back to the Discovery's own extremely likeable crew.

Star Trek: Picard season 2

new star trek cartoon show

Expected release date: 2021

Star Trek: Picard season 2 is officially happening, but where the story will go is something of a mystery after the series' eventful finale, as Picard survived (sort of) the Romulans' attack on the synthetic world of Coppelius. In season 2, expect the show to deal with the fact that (spoiler alert!) Picard now has a synthetic body, as he found a way to cheat death. We're expecting more TNG cameos in season 2, after season 1 gave fans all-too-brief glimpses of Riker and Troi. We also know Whoopi Goldberg will be reprising her role as Guinan from that series.

Our hope is that the writers will focus on making the crew of newer characters on the La Sirena a little easier to like; Star Trek: Picard doesn't yet have the complete-feeling ensemble that Discovery does, and that's a challenge they need to overcome.

Filming on Picard season 2 was meant to happen this June, but has been delayed for obvious reasons. We still expect to see it next year at some point, though.

Section 31 (working title)

new star trek cartoon show

The most intriguing spin-off in this list, and reportedly the next one in line for filming after Discovery season 3. Michelle Yeoh will reprise her memorable role as the Mirror Universe's version of Philippa Georgiou, who joined the titular mysterious Federation organization in Discovery. Section 31 operates autonomously in protection of the Federation, and is commonly known as an extreme group that works for what it perceives as the greater good. This should show a side of the Star Trek universe we haven't seen yet.

Reports suggested Section 31 was supposed to film in May of this year, but naturally that's bound to be impacted by the current global health crisis.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Expected release date: 2021 (or later)

Star Trek Discovery season 2's versions of Captain Pike, Spock and Number One were evidently popular enough that they're getting their own spin-off. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds features Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn reprising their roles in what's been described as a 'classic' Star Trek series with an angle of optimism, which should sit nicely alongside the more densely serialized likes of Discovery and Picard. As a more direct prequel to the Original Series, it'll be about the crew of the Enterprise in the pre-Kirk days.

Nickelodeon Star Trek animated series

Expected release date: 2022

Star Trek has so far lacked a counterpart to Star Wars ' Rebels and The Clone Wars animated series, but that's set to change. A so-far untitled Star Trek CG TV series is coming to Nickelodeon in the US, and as of July 2019, it had a writers' team in place. Dan and Kevin Hageman, who worked on the excellent Netflix series Trollhunters, are the key creatives behind the show, suggesting that something of a high quality that doesn't talk down to its audience is in the works here.

Little is known about the show, but it will have serialized storylines, and Kurtzman has suggested we might not even see it in action until after 2021. Like Lower Decks, two seasons of it have been ordered, which is partly motivated by the long lead times needed on animated series.

Untitled live-action show (possibly Star Trek: Starfleet Academy)

Back in January, series overseer Alex Kurtzman explained (as captured by Trek Core ) that two more live-action Star Trek series were yet to be revealed.

With Strange New Worlds' later announcement, we found out about one, but what about the other? It remains a mystery, but a younger-focused series called Starfleet Academy was reportedly in the works back in 2018, from the Gossip Girl duo of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. An old Variety report about Kurtzman's work on Trek also suggested it was possible a series about the antagonist Khan Noonien Singh was also in the works.

We'll just have to wait and see on this last one. It might even be a different project we haven't heard about yet.

One thing's for sure, though: you'll get all the Star Trek you can handle over the next couple of years.

Star Trek's New Animated Shorts Bring Back The Characters Fans Have Been Missing

Star Trek Very Short Treks M'Ress Caitian

The latest "Star Trek" animated series, "Very Short Treks," attempts to honor — or at least revisit and poke fun at — arguably the most underrated series in the nearly 60-year-old franchise. "Star Trek: The Animated Series" was a two-season Saturday morning cartoon show starring most of the original cast and written by many of the original writers, which filled in the gaps left in the historical records after the Enterprise's five-year mission got cut short by CBS.

While "Star Trek: The Animated Series" could be a little hit-and-miss (just like every other "Trek" show) it expanded on the original series in crucial ways. The animation was limited, but there was no longer any need to hold back on ambitious creatures and concepts due to budgetary concerns. So the cartoon featured an array of bizarre worlds and life forms that had never been possible on the show before and have rarely been explored since. "The Animated Series" also introduced the concept of a holodeck for the very first time, and featured some of the first sequels in the series, with characters revisiting important planets and story elements from classic episodes like "The City on the Edge of Forever," "The Trouble with Tribbles," and even " Shore Leave ."

And not for nothing, but the first "Star Trek" series to ever win an Emmy Award was this short-lived animated 1970s show, so have some damn respect is all I'm saying here.

But what "Very Short Treks" has reminded us "Animated Series" fans — and perhaps introduced to new generations who are, probably, less familiar with the show — is that in addition to the live-action crew members, the original "Star Trek" cartoon also introduced new regular characters into the franchise's canon. And although a lot of the modern "Trek" shows take place in roughly the same era as "The Animated Series," those characters have been, tragically, almost completely ignored for 50 whole years.

Any which way you canon

Star Trek The Animated Series Lieutenant Arex Edosian

Granted, the question of whether "Star Trek: The Animated Series" is officially canon has long befuddled "Trek" fans and has led to some (hopefully good-natured) arguments over the years.

Sure, there have been serious continuity mix-ups between "The Animated Series" and the live-action films and shows. The animated episode "The Magicks of Megas-Tu" found the Enterprise traveling to the center of the universe and meeting and befriending Satan. But in the movie "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," Spock's half-brother Sybok forces the crew of the Enterprise to travel to the center of the universe, allegedly for the very first time, where they (sort of) meet God instead. You'd think if "The Animated Series" was canon that the whole "Actually, we've been to the center of the universe, that's where Satan lives, he's a pretty good guy if you get to know him, and we could totally introduce you" thing would have come up at least once.

Then again, even officially canonical live-action "Trek" can get retconned within an inch of its life. The final episode of "Star Trek: The Original Series" claimed that it was an actual law that women weren't allowed to be Starfleet captains, a plot point the franchise has mercifully ignored in the years that followed.

So what's official? All we know for sure is that when  the trailer for "Very Short Treks" debuted  this new web series declared that it was "anything but canon." But that probably has a lot less to do with whether "The Animated Series" is canon and a lot more to do with the tone of the new show. The first episode, " Skin a Cat ," features Starfleet officers acting wildly out of character. Also, everyone on the Enterprise dies at the end. So that episode, at least, is obviously a comedy sketch, and not a new and vital piece of "Trek" lore.

A talking cat?!

Star Trek Very Short Treks M'Ress Tendi

Regardless, "Very Short Treks" placed front-and-center two characters who were very important to "Star Trek: The Animated Series" but have rarely been seen since. They're two regular crew members who, in live-action, would be difficult to bring to life on a TV budget. But again, this was animation, so all bets were basically off.

The character featured most prominently in "Skin a Cat," besides Kirk and Spock, is Lt. M'Ress. Originally voiced by Majel Barrett (who played both Nurse Chapel and Una Chin-Riley in "The Original Series," and the voice of almost every Starfleet computer, and Lwaxana Troi in "The Next Generation"), and now voiced by Cristina Milizia ("The Casagrandes"), M'Ress is a communications officer who sometimes fills in for Uhura on the bridge of the Enterprise. She's also a Caitian, which is why she looks like a humanoid cat.

Another regular bridge member who appears, without dialogue, in the first episode of "Very Short Treks" is Lt. Arex, one of the ship's navigation officers, who has taken over Ensign Chekov's post on the bridge. Walter Koenig, who played Pavel Chekov in the original series and films, was the only regular cast member not to return for "The Animated Series," although he did get to write an animated episode featuring a gigantic Spock clone, titled "The Infinite Vulcan." Voiced by James Doohan (Scotty himself), Arex is an Edosian, a species with three arms, three legs, and three fingers on each appendage.

Caitians and Edosians both appeared in "Star Trek" in the years that followed, mostly on "Lower Decks." In that series, the ship's doctor, T'Ana is also Caitian, and an Edosian is portrayed as the proprietor of a health spa. In live-action, Caitians have also appeared in the films "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" and "Star Trek Into Darkness." So we know their species, at least, are canon! There's no excuse!

The day of retconning is at hand

Star Trek IV The Voyage Home Caitian Andorian

So the question is ... where are M'Ress and Arex in these new "Star Trek" movies and shows?

The Kelvinverse "Trek" movies, as well as shows like "Discovery" and "Strange New Worlds," all take place during or shortly before the "Original Series" timeline. (Well, okay, not "Discovery" so much  anymore , but the first two seasons at least.) While some of the characters may be alternate reality versions of the original crew, all of these films and shows feature at least some classic characters who we've already met, before the events of the first two TV series.

"Discovery" and "Strange New Worlds" go out of their way to re-introduce younger versions of beloved characters like Spock, Kirk, and Scotty in unexpected and dramatic ways, and add new elements to their characters that expand on what we already knew about them. Even characters who had very little screen time previously, like Captain Pike, get to take center stage and keep it for a while, establishing their own greatness as both accomplished Starfleet officers and multifaceted fictional characters.

But although these new live-action films and shows have the budget to turn Caitians and Edosians into a reality, and even though characters like M'Ress and Arex have so little built-in canon that modern storytellers could build them up free from most expectations, they've been conspicuously absent until "Very Short Treks." And again, "Very Short Treks" isn't even canon.

Considering the obsessive urge long-running franchises like "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" have to turn every minor character, moment, and even stray lines of dialogue into excuses for spin-offs, "Trek's" weirdly stubborn refusal to make M'Ress and Arex series regulars — or at least prominently featured guest stars — is simply confusing. Hopefully, these new appearances remind the producers, and audiences, that they're out there somewhere, and they're just waiting to make a triumphant and  canonical  return.

Justin Simien and Tawny Newsome

The Star Trek Universe keeps expanding at warp speed.

Justin Simien , the writer-director behind Dear White People and The Haunted Mansion , and Tawny Newsome, one of the voice stars of Star Trek: Lower Decks , are in development on a new live-action Star Trek series for Paramount+.

The announcement was made Saturday during the Star Trek Universe panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con by Simien, who was moderating, and Newsome, who was on stage.

Sources have said the show may have workplace comedy tones of The Office or Parks and Recreation .

Simien said watching The Next Generation was a major influence on his writing in his formative years. “Dear White People could not exist with out Next Generation ,” he said, adding that the 1980s series taught him about ensembles and having various points of view for characters.

Kurtzman said that Newsome became a writer on the upcoming Starfleet Academy series and impressed him so much that he was into the show the two were pitching. “She is a stone cold assassin of a writer,” he said.

Simien, Newsome and Trek franchise czar Alex Kurtzman will write and executive produce the series. Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Kyle Laursen are also exec producing. CBS Studios is producing the show.

The show, if it goes to series, would join a line-up of live-action and animated series that includes Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks and the upcoming Starfleet Academy .

Simien gained attention for his racial satire Dear White People , which proved to be a hit on the festival circuit. The feature was later adapted into a television series that lasted four years on Netflix. He also wrote and directed the 2020 horror comedy Bad Hair as well as 2023’s Haunted Mansion .

Newsome is an actor-comedian who appeared on IFC comedy Brockmire as well as Netflix’s high-profile but short-lived Space Force comedy. On Lower Decks , she voices ensign Beckett Mariner, one of the lead characters.

Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Sonequa Martin-Green in Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Anson Mount as Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well.

Hologram Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery

Section 31 Movie - Production Complete

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

Here's everything we know about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy so far:

Scott bakula star trek: enterprise callbacks were my favorite part of strange new worlds’ crossover, star trek actors reveal strange new worlds movie “discussion,” crossover with chris pine’s enterprise idea.

  • USS Enterprise becomes Star Trek's sole big-name starship in 2025, featured in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
  • Star Trek: Section 31 is the only other Star Trek project scheduled for 2025, potentially without a hero ship.
  • As other Star Trek series end, audiences say goodbye to beloved starships and crews, but the Enterprise carries on.

The USS Enterprise becomes Star Trek 's only big-name starship once again in 2025. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 premieres in 2025 on Paramount+. Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Section 31, the first Star Trek streaming movie, are Star Trek on Paramount+'s only 2025 projects scheduled. Star Trek: Picard ended in 2023, Star Trek: Lower Decks will be over by the end of 2024, and Star Trek: Prodigy season 3 is years away even if Netflix renews it.

When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered in 2022, the prequel set in the 23rd century, brought back the Starship Enterprise as its hero ship. Enterprise, commanded by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), is the same starship that Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) leads in Star Trek: The Original Series. Strange New Worlds ' USS Enterprise joined the USS Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery , La Sirena in Star Trek: Picard , the USS Cerritos in Star Trek: Lower Decks , and the USS Protostar in Star Trek: Prodigy. Star Trek: Picard season 3 even brought back the USS Enterprise-D and turned the USS Titan-A into the USS Enterprise-G. Star Trek on Paramount+ used to be full of hero starships.

Star Trek is ending series like Discovery and Lower Decks but renewed Strange New Worlds while setting up new streaming and theatrical movies.

USS Enterprise In Strange New Worlds Becomes Star Trek’s Only Ship Again In 2025

Enterprise has no other big name starships to compete with.

When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 premieres in 2025, the USS Enterprise will be Star Trek 's one and only starship featured in new Star Trek episodes once more. It's not clear if Star Trek: Section 31 will feature a hero ship of its own. And even if it does, it's unlikely Section 31 will have a ship as famous as the Enterprise, unless it brings back the USS Enterprise-B or introduces the USS Enterprise-C in Star Trek 's 24th century 'lost era. ' But even if that happens, it just reinforces the legacy of the Starship Enterprise as Star Trek 's main ship.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will possibly premiere in 2026, and it's unknown if the series will feature its own hero starship.

Until Star Trek: Deep Space Nine got the USS Defiant and Star Trek: Voyager premiered in 1995, the USS Enterprise dominated Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation with the Enterprise-D. In the 1990s, Star Trek grew to become about more than the voyages of the Enterprise until DS9 and Voyager ended. Starting in 2001, Star Trek: Enterprise 's NX-01 became the franchise's hero ship. After Enterprise was canceled , J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009) brought back the 23rd century USS Enterprise in the alternate Kelvin Timeline. Then, when Star Trek: Discovery debuted in 2017, Star Trek became about other ships and crews along with the USS Enterprise.

The USS Enterprise returned at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 1 and recurred in season 2 before spinning off in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Will Star Trek Fans See USS Discovery, Cerritos, Prodigy, Or Enterprise-G Again?

Star trek is scaling down.

With only Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 and Star Trek: Section 31 streaming on Paramount+ in 2025, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy possibly in 2026, audiences are saying goodbye to many starships and Star Trek characters they've fallen in love with since Star Trek: Discovery premiered in 2017. Exiting the stage, but hopefully not forever, are the crews and starships of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy. The USS Discovery, USS Enterprise-G, USS Cerritos, USS Voyager-A, and USS Prodigy are all going into drydock, but can some of them return ?

The Starship Enterprise will keep Star Trek's flag flying on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Star Trek: Discovery 's ending sent the USS Discovery to its ultimate fate as seen Star Trek: Short Trek s' "Calypso". The USS Enterprise-G's future is dependent on Star Trek: Legacy , the proposed spinoff of Star Trek: Picard , happening. Audiences dearly hope Netflix greenlights Star Trek: Prodigy season 3 so the young crew of the USS Protostar can return. Meanwhile, Star Trek: Lower Decks ending on Paramount+ may lead to a future on another streaming service, if the audience supports the USS Cerritos' final season. Until any of that happens, the Starship Enterprise will keep Star Trek 's flag flying on Star Trek: Strange New World s.
