What is TravelTime?

Travel Time Map Generator & Isochrones

I know i can get from a to b by public transport within my selected time, but it's not showing up.

If you're using public transport to do your analysis, it can look like we don't include a specific transit line. But it is rare that we have forgotten to add it! We have a full data team collecting transport data, and they're rarely caught out. It's usually due to understanding how we calculate travel time catchments. We build the area to include:

  • Walking to the station platform
  • Waiting for the next available departure
  • Time spent boarding the train
  • Giving enough time to take the A to B journey
  • Depart on the station on the other side.

That means if you set your max travel time at 30 minutes, and the train journey you think should be included takes 28 minutes, it probably won't show up, because the other steps push it over the max 30 min limit. Try adding an extra 5-10 minutes to your max catchment area and see if this helps! Understand how we built our public transport model

You can't drive that far / you can drive much further than that

We recommend that you do a little experiment.

  • Open another mapping app of your choice and enter an A to B route
  • Select a departure time for tomorrow.

The average mapping provider gives very vague driving estimations. It's not uncommon to see a journey estimation between 30 minutes up to 2 hours. That's a lot of buffer room!

Our driving model only returns one singular best possible time estimate. We do this using our purpose-built driving model. Explore how we've built our driving model.

About this tool

This demo was built to showcase the TravelTime API. To use the full capabilities of the API you will need coding skills, or experience with one of our integrations: QGIS, Alteryx or ArcGIS. Access to the API gives you larger travel time catchment areas, more transport mode options and large request volumes. Access the developer playground here.

What is a travel time map?

Our map tool allows you to create a 'How far can I go map' by transport mode and time limit. For example someone can ask how far can I drive from my home in 30 minutes. The tool outputs shapes, also known as travel time isochrones visualise where's reachable. Sometimes these shapes are incorrectly labelled as a 'travel time radius map'. A radius is always just a circular shape, but a travel time shape is completely unique as it analyses all locations reachable using a specific mode of transport.

How to create a drive time radius map or other modes

  • Select a start location
  • Select a maximum travel time limit
  • Select a mode of transport, for example driving
  • Voila! There's your driving radius map

Use cases for consumers

  • Create a commute time map so you can see where to live based on commute time.
  • How far can i travel in a given time: compare transport coverage for different areas.
  • Create a drive time radius map: explore how far you can travel on a road trip.

Use cases for businesses

  • Travel time mapping up to 4 hours & cross reference other data sets in GIS such as population data
  • Site selection analysis: analyse the best location to locate a business by adding thousands of analysis points
  • Create a distance matrix or travel time matrix & calculate travel times from thousands of origins to thousands of destinations
  • Network analysis / travelling salesman problem: use spatial analytics to solve routing problems
  • Commute time map - plot thousands of employee commute times for an office relocation

This web page is a limited demo that can do the following:

  • Create up to 3 time polygons visualising where's reachable within 2 hours or less. Our API can create large travel time areas, talk to sales.
  • Calculate travel times from an origin to various points of interest - in this demo we use points from Foursquare Give A to B routing details

Drive isochrone

Travel Time Map

Travel time is one of the most important criteria people use when choosing a destination. Whether traveling for work or leisure, people want to know what is within their reach, within a certain traveling time.

Travel time maps (also called driving time maps or isochrone maps ) show how far you can go from a location within a certain time.

In other words, Isochrones are a powerful analytic tool that offer exact answers to the question "what is within X travel time of this location?"

What Travel Time Maps Can Do For Your Business

People search for information online before making a trip, moving home, job hunting or even finding a specific store branch, which means travel time maps are becoming more popular in the business world. When you display travel time alongside search results on a map, it's easier for your customers to compare results. They don't have to click away to look up info on third-party maps. That keeps them on your website.

Using isochrones helps your visitors scout out locations and amenities based on the required travel time . Customizable travel time search means you display the results that matter to your customers, which establishes your business as one they can rely on.

With Geoapify isochrone maps , you can refine the route by your preferred mode of transport. Choose from walking , driving , truck , bicycle , or public transit . For example, find hospitals within twenty driving minutes of a location, or beaches within thirty public transit minutes.

Using Travel Time Maps (or Isochrone maps) for tourism

With research showing that 85% of family travelers rank being near major attractions or theme parks as being of utmost importance when booking a holiday, providing a travel time map helps them make decisions.

Time travel maps help tourism businesses provide up-to-date and personalized information to their customers. For example, visitors can see which tourist attractions and amenities are in reach of accommodation so they can make the best choice.

Visitors can also check how close accommodations and amenities are to each other, making it easier to plan day trips and make sure they see all the sights they want.

Searching home within 30 min drive radius

Estate Agents

Estate agents can use isochrones to help customers find their next dream home. Having the right things within the right distance is a must when looking for a new home to buy or rent. The time to reach amenities and public transport is important to house hunters. For example, one study found that 25% of people in London said living near a tube is essential when choosing a new home.

Use isochrones to help clients search for schools within a certain walking distance of a property, or shops within a certain driving distance. Customers can also look for sports facilities, swimming pools, other leisure facilities, public transport hubs and more.

Time travel maps make it easier for people to visualize living in a location . They can get a feel for what they'll be able to do in their new location. Using isochrone maps takes the guesswork out of finding properties to view, and encourages customers to book a viewing appointment for houses and apartments that match their needs.

Find network coverage, check warehouse reachability

Businesses of all kinds can use isochrones to show customers the travel time from their location to a specific store location . Use travel time maps to create an up-to-date store finder that helps customers find stores near their home, or look at which stores they’ll be able to reach on their next holiday or business trip.

Businesses can use isochrones to expand their company , too. Use isochrone maps to scout out potential new locations, and get a feel for how reachable those locations will be for your target demographic and staff members.

You can combine isochrones with demographic data to better understand potential new areas. For example, find out if your potential clients live or work nearby and how easy it will be for them to reach you within a decent time frame.

Estimate the reachability of a location

Logistics and Delivery

Businesses use travel time maps to find the best locations for their warehouses and logistic centers . These tools focus on places where the travel times from different customers are minimized, thereby reducing costs and handling your sales better.

For example, the size of the isochrone indicates how easily you can reach a place. Moreover, the overlapping of the isochrones shows well-covered areas , while the holes signify where service is problematic.

Find the best location to improve the commute time

Commute Planning

Individuals can use isochrones to plan commuting times for themselves or their families. Optimizing commute times to work or study locations makes for less time spent commuting, and an easier time coordinating with the rest of the family.

Educational institutions and employers can also use isochrones to help students or employees plan their commutes and find the most efficient routes. Research shows that every minute of commute time lowers job satisfaction and increases stress, so anything you can do to help students and employees find the best route will help.

Looking for a new office location? Use isochrones to see how good or bad the public transport connections are , and see which amenities such as shops or healthcare locations are in easy reach.

Searching a job within desired travel time

Classifieds and Directories

Help classified readers narrow their search to find what matters to them. With isochrones, they can search for jobs or items for sale within a specific distance of their home . No more finding the ideal job or item for purchase, only to find it’s in a hard-to-reach location or simply too far away.

Narrowing results by travel distance means more relevant and accurate results, and more satisfied customers.

Travel time maps have a wide range of applications across industries and even for personal use. Show your visitors the information they need, and they're more likely to stay on your website, or making a booking of enquiry.

Wondering how best to use isochrones in your business? Eager to get started? Try isochrones for free in our playground, or get in touch to discuss your specific needs.

Sometimes, the transport options we show you are ranked according to a combination of objective factors designed to help you find relevant and useful information. These factors can include duration, distance, price, your mode preference, or the relevance of a mode to your query. Generally, the most important factors are your mode preference, trip durations, and sometimes price.

Where available, we also show you other mobility services like public transport, scooter or bicycle rentals, and vehicle ride services. These mobility services are provided by third parties who have made their transport data publicly available or who have a partner agreement with us. Any partnerships or business relationships we may have with any transportation service providers do not influence the ranking of these services.

11 Public Transport Travel Time Maps: Europe vs The United States

Last Updated: March 3, 2023 7 Comments

London Public Transport Travel Time Map

Have you ever wondered how much of your city is accessible by public transport within 60 minutes?

Well TravelTime Maps have created a really cool radius tool that allows you to explore how far you can get in a given amount of time.

In the examples below we looked we looked at how of much of each city within a 10 mile (16km) radius from the centre was reachable by public transport within 1 hour. We looked at 5 European capitals vs the 4 largest US cities plus Washington DC and Toronto, Canada.

Overall, European cities do quite well, although there is a big north vs south divide with London, Paris Berlin all over 70% reachable, whereas Madrid and Rome are less than 50% reachable.

  • 11% of the 10 mile radius is not reachable by public transport within 60 minutes (89% reachable)
  • 28% of the 60 minute public transport time falls beyond the radius

Berlin Public Transport Travel Time Map

  • 24% of the 10 mile radius is not reachable by public transport within 60 minutes (76% reachable)
  • 22% of the 60 minute public transport time falls beyond the radius

Paris Public Transport Travel Time Map

  • 28% of the 10 mile radius is not reachable by public transport within 60 minutes (72% reachable)
  • 17% of the 60 minute public transport time falls beyond the radius

Madrid Public Transport Travel Time Map

  • 57% of the 10 mile radius is not reachable by public transport within 60 minutes (43% reachable)
  • 19% of the 60 minute public transport time falls beyond the radius

Rome Public Transport Travel Time Map

  • 60% of the 10 mile radius is not reachable by public transport within 60 minutes (40% reachable)
  • 0% of the 60 minute public transport time falls beyond the radius

United States + Canada

As one might expect the US and Canada do less well than the European cities. However, part of the issue is how the radius is calculated. It only looks at the percentage of the radius you can get to using public transport, and does not take into account whether where you want to go is land or water.

This means, Chicago, Toronto and to a lesser extend New York look far worse than they would if you excluded water.

Houston Public Transport Travel Time Map

  • 50% of the 10 mile radius is not reachable by public transport within 60 minutes (50% reachable)
  • 10% of the 60 minute public transport time falls beyond the radius

7. New York City

New York Public Transport Travel Time Map

  • 53% of the 10 mile radius is not reachable by public transport within 60 minutes (47% reachable)
  • 15% of the 60 minute public transport time falls beyond the radius

Chicago Public Transport Travel Time Map

  • 14% of the 60 minute public transport time falls beyond the radius

Toronto Public Transport Travel Time Map

  • 55% of the 10 mile radius is not reachable by public transport within 60 minutes (45% reachable)

10. Washington DC

Washington Dc Public Transport Travel Time Map

  • 59% of the 10 mile radius is not reachable by public transport within 60 minutes (41% reachable)
  • 6% of the 60 minute public transport time falls beyond the radius

11. Los Angeles

La Public Transport Travel Time Map

  • 77% of the 10 mile radius is not reachable by public transport within 60 minutes (23% reachable)
  • 4% of the 60 minute public transport time falls beyond the radius

If you want to play around with different times, distances or even different cities you can do using the tool here .

For data, TravelTime Maps states that:

In terms of the transport data we return walking, cycling, driving, Public transport, Public transport + Train. In order to return walking, cycling and driving we combine OSM maps roads information with historical traffic information and real time information to determine speeds. For Public transport and train we combine OSM information with public transport schedules, routes and stops.

The cities with waterfronts have their centers really strangely placed. The NYC transit system is not designed to accommodate NJ. Nor does the CTA have Lake Michigan access. What was the process for choosing the radius center?

Manuel Exposito says

Or if you take a city like Madrid, a lot of place in the radius are empty, nobody live there. So, it’s an interessant map but a little bit unfair … No public transport in the water in the middle of nowhere, logical but it gotta be ignored in the radius (sorry for my english)

Luke Vander Linden says

Looks like they didn’t bother to include all forms of public transport either. Buses. Commuter rail.

May 11, 2018 at 7:58 am

I’ve travelled on the bus from Manhattan (Port Authority) to Denville in 45 minutes and from London (Waterloo) to Basingstoke by train in a similar time. These experiences alone make me doubt the value of these maps.

A large part of the area you can’t reach in Berlin is a forest (Grunewald) but what really made me laugh is Lake Michigan counting against Chicago’s public transport.

This is such an interesting comparison between European cities and US cities in terms of public transport accessibility. Have you ever tested how far you can get in your own city within a certain time frame using public transport?

Estimate your travel and arrival time in Maps on iPad

Your iPad can predict how long it may take you to get to a destination, and you can share your estimated time of arrival (ETA) while following driving, cycling, and walking directions.

Note: Available in select areas. Features vary by country and region.

Predict travel time

You can see how long it may take to reach a destination when following a suggested set of directions. When you’re driving or taking transit, iPad bases the prediction on traffic patterns, and you can see how the travel time changes depending on when you plan to leave.

map of travel times

Search for the place you want to go, tap a result, then tap the directions button .

If you’re driving or taking transit, the time to your destination is based on current traffic conditions.

To see how long it may take you to travel later, tap Now, tap “Leave at” or “Arrive by,” enter a date and time, then tap Apply.

The time to your destination is calculated according to typical, expected traffic patterns.

Share your estimated time of arrival (ETA)

Siri: Say something like: “Share my ETA.”   Learn how to use Siri .

Or without using Siri:

Search for the place you want to go, then tap Go.

Tap the route card at the bottom of the screen, then tap Share ETA.

map of travel times

Choose one or more suggested contacts, or tap Open Contacts to find a contact.

To share your ETA with more contacts, tap “Sharing with” at the bottom of the screen, then tap to add contacts.

You can also use the Messages, Find My, and Contacts apps to share your your location with others. See Share your location in Messages , Share your location in Find My , or Edit contacts .

Stop sharing your ETA

Open the route card for a trip in progress.

Tap “Sharing with” at the bottom of the screen, then tap Stop Sharing ETA below each contact’s name.

Automatically share your ETA to a pin

When you add a contact to a pinned place in your library, that contact automatically receives your ETA whenever you start turn-by-turn navigation to that location.

Touch and hold the pin, then tap Edit Details.

Tap Add Person, search for a contact, then tap to add them.

Tap the pinned location, then tap Go to start sharing your ETA.

Your location, route, and ETA are viewable until you arrive.

Turn off ETA sharing

Scroll down, then turn off Share ETA.

Note: Some Maps features on iPad models with Wi-Fi + Cellular require a cellular data plan and Cellular Data turned on in Settings > Apps > Maps. Standard carrier data and text rates may apply. See View or change your cellular data account .

People using iOS 13.1, iPadOS 13.1, or later receive a Maps notification with your ETA, and they can track your progress in Maps. People using earlier versions receive the notification through iMessage. People using other mobile devices receive an SMS message.

7 useful apps for travelling in Japan: transport, taxi, shopping and more

Planning a trip to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto or anywhere in Japan? Download these handy apps for stress-free travel

Kaila Imada

Thanks to today’s technology, travel has never been easier and information is more accessible than ever. However, there’s a lot to sift through, especially if you’re trying to pull together a list of useful travel tips for visiting Tokyo (or any other cities in Japan for that matter).

Aside from having obvious tools like Google Translate on your mobile phone, there’s a wealth of other practical apps out there for every need and any type of tourist. Whether you’re a family travelling with a baby in tow or a smart shopper looking for the coolest items to bring home, there’s an app out there to help you out.

So, to get you started on your Japan trip, we round up a few of our favourite apps we think you should have on your phone before arriving in Japan.

  • Things to do

Mama Papa Map

Travelling requires extra effort if you have little ones in tow. More so if you need access to nursing rooms and diaper-changing facilities in a foreign land at a moment’s notice. For this specific purpose, the free Mama Papa Map is a godsend, as it will help you locate such facilities easily across Japan.

Crowd-sourced using location pins and reviews by parents all over Japan, the app offers an easy way to search for nursing rooms and diaper-changing stations around the country. The facilities that are available vary from location to location. More often than not, the suggested spots also come with useful information like how clean they are and the amenities they provide.

Payke

Shopping in Japan often comes with the struggle of trying to make sense of the information on the packaging, which are almost exclusively written in Japanese. While this country is one of the best places in the world for retail therapy, the language barrier remains a big hurdle. This is especially true for food and drinks as well as beauty, skincare and medicine.

However, shopping can be easier, particularly for tourists and non-Japanese speakers, with the Payke app. All you have to do is scan the barcode of an item using the app and a translation of the product information will appear. Supported languages include English, Korean, traditional and simplified Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese.

Uber

You probably already have Uber on your smartphone – and that’s one less thing you have to worry about. While Uber doesn’t exactly work the same in Japan as it does in other countries, it’s one of the easiest ways to hail a taxi in big cities like Tokyo.

Using the app saves you the hassle of having to explain your destination to the driver, as you can set that when requesting your ride. Plus, all transactions are cashless, so you don't have to worry about notes and coins, especially in the middle of the night.

Safety Tips

Safety Tips

Safety Tips by the Japan National Tourism Organization is a free app that allows you to check the weather as well as useful disaster information including early earthquake warnings, tsunami alerts and volcanic activity. You can even search for medical institutions and evacuation locations in the event of an emergency.

The app is available in a multitude of languages including English, Japanese, Korean, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish, Portuguese, Thai, Indonesian, Tagalog, Nepali, Khmer, Burmese and Mongolian.

Not only does this app help you find routes to get around Tokyo and Japan, it also offers an offline search where you can still locate useful services near you without connecting to the internet. These include free wifi hotspots, ATMs, currency exchange amenities and train stations.

Switching between cities and hotels can sometimes leave you with an awkward transitionary period where you don’t know what to do with your luggage. Instead of lugging your belongings around with you all day, you can use Ecbo Cloak to find storage facilities to drop off your bags at reasonable prices.

While you can always make use of train station lockers, this app gives you other options like retail stores, restaurants and hotels offering storage services to non-guests. This is also beneficial, as station lockers are often too small to accommodate large suitcases. To make things easier, you can reserve and pay for storage all within the app, so there’s no need to stress about having cash on hand.

Google Maps

Google Maps

This is a no-brainer. One of the handiest and most obvious apps you can have for travelling in Japan is Google Maps . Not only is it great for finding information on and locations of attractions, restaurants, bars, shops and hotels, it’s also one of the best tools for navigating the extensive transportation networks in large cities like Tokyo.

When searching for routes, the map provides detailed navigation instructions for what trains you should take, and especially in Tokyo, even the most convenient train car to board for the quickest exit. You can also filter your route with options like ‘best route’, ‘fewest transfers’, ‘lowest cost’ and ‘least walking’. Additionally, it even allows you to pick your preferred modes of transport whether that be trains or buses or a mix of both.
