Kartikswami - Temple Above Clouds

In the wonderlands of the Garhwal Himalayas, lies the Kartik Swami temple that remains hidden by the cottony clouds that carelessly drifts above the temple. This holy temple is dedicated to Kartikeya, the elder son of Lord Shiva and is adorned at the end of a narrow ridge, enclosed by a deep valley.

One can soak in the mystical beauty of the snowy peaks and the lower Himalayas that can be seen from here. If you move inside, you’ll be stunned by the beautifully carved idol of Kartik Swami.

Lord Shiva impressed by his intelligence gave the privilege to be worshipped first to Ganesha. Lord Kartik got angry with this and gave his flesh to mother Parvati and bones to his father Lord Shiva. In this temple, the bones of Lord Kartikeya are shown in the idol.

Kartik Swami Temple Uttarakhand

Kartik Swami Temple is well known as the abode of lord Kartikey, elder son of Lord Shiva. As per the Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati challenged Lord Ganesha and Kartikey to take seven rounds of the universe. Furthermore, the first person to finish the given task will be honored to be worshiped at the religious rites. Lord Kartikey set off to begin the seven rounds of the universe. However, Lord Ganesha took seven rounds around Lord Shiva and Parvati and thanked them for being his universe. Both gods were pleased with the response in the task and gave him blessings that lord Ganesha will be worshiped first in Hindu rituals. Kartikswami Temple is dedicated to lord Kartikeya, the elder son of Lord Shiva. It is perhaps the only temple of Kartikeya in Uttarakhand. The temple is situated on a ridge at the top of Kronch Parvat. As per the Hindu mythology, it is believed that the Lord Shiva once asked both of his sons, Kartikeya and Ganesha to take seven round of the universe and the one who finishes it first will get the privilege of getting worshipped first. While Lord Kartikeya started his journey, Ganesha took the circle around Lord Shiva saying He is the universe to him. Chopta Travel Guide: Tungnath-Deoria Tal-Kartik Swami-Trekking

This is a comprehensive Chopta Travel Guide including trekking to Tungnath and Chandrashila as well as other major treks in the area including Deoria Tal, Kartik Swami, and Anusuya Devi with route map & stay details. It is one of the easier and shorter yet most rewarding treks in Garhwal that can be done without any guide or assistance. Yet, I am trying to spoon-feed everything for the extreme novice. Advanced travellers can skip the basics and check the parts they need.

Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila-Deoria Tal-Kartik Swamy-Trekking Map

Before going any further, take some time to understand the routes. These are not exactly according to scale but should give you enough idea about the directions you need to take. As you can see, there are several treks (shown by dotted lines) in that region between Rudraprayag and Chamoli/Gopeshwar. They are not far from each other and can be wrapped up in one trip. A long weekend of 4-5 days from Delhi should be ideal.

Where and what exactly is Chopta?

Actually, Chopta is just a small settlement on the road with a few restaurants. It looks like a collection of restaurants and small hotels. When one says that he has trekked to Chopta, it basically means he has trekked upwards from that point to the Tungnath Temple and further up to the Chandrashila Top . Tungnath is one of the Panch Kedars (5 major temples dedicated to various forms of Shiva) of Garhwal and so it is an important pilgrim destination. Chandrashila is the peak of that particular mountain beyond the temple.

Chopta Rhododendrons 19

But the Google Map shows a Chopta very near to Rudraprayag!

Yes, there are two Choptas in that region ! Check the map, I have marked the other Chopta in Red while the Chopta that leads to Tungnath is marked in orange. If you are going to Kartik Swamy from Rudraprayag, you will come across the 2nd Chopta. Actually, this is a bigger village and hence it is shown more prominently by google, thus confusing newbie trekkers. Also, there is a different place called Chopta Valley in Sikkim. Do not confuse this with that one too. This post is about the Chopta from where the Tungnath-Chandrashila Trek begins.

How to reach Chopta?

There are multiple routes. But you will have to reach Haridwar-Rishikesh first and move up along the NH 58. After that you have multiple options, • Break your journey at Rudraprayag, go to Ukimath and then Chopta. • Break your journey at Rudraprayag, go to Ukimath and then to Sari. Visit Deoria Tal and go to Chopta the next day. • Break your journey at Rudraprayag, go to Ukimath and then to Sari. Visit Deoria Tal and trek to Chopta the next day via Rohini Bugyal. • Break your journey at Gopeshwar (which is ahead of Rudraprayag), and then come to Chopta via Mandal.

Buses and shared cars should be available on these routes. You can also try hitchhiking at the last stretches.

Now, I personally chose the 2nd one. The 4th route is longer but the road is supposed to be better. On the other hand the 3rd option is interesting but will take one day extra to accommodate more trekking, something we should have planned beforehand.

What on earth is Rohini Bugyal?

Rohini Bugyal is an alpine meadow that connects Chopta to Sari Village (Deoria Tal) . Instead of taking the road, one can trek through the Bugyal and negotiate the thick forests to reach from one place to another. However, this will take one extra day and will be risky without a local guide. I have not tried this route yet.

What exactly is to be done at Chopta?

The primary activity in Chopta is trekking. It is not a very long or hectic trek. The road is well built and there is no need for guides or assistance. Once you reach Tungnath (Around 3600 meters), you can visit the ancient Shiva Temple and explore the hills. You will easily locate Himalayan Monals , an endemic species of pheasant. However, the prospects of locating other animals are thin. There are places to stay in Tungnath and you can also camp.

Himalayan Monal (10)

The next day if the time permits you can trek upwards and summit Chandrashila which is around 4000 metres. I personally had to abandon this part for various reasons but it is not very difficult either.

What are the accommodation options at Chopta?

When I first visited the area back in 2014, accommodations were limited and basic. However, tourism exploded in the region after that. So, the entire stretch is now full of homestays, campsites, lodges, and what not!

  • So, you can stay near Chopta. There will be many hotels, homestays, and campsites in and around the place.
  • You can also stay at Tungnath after the trek, where there are some basic accommodations. If you stay at Tungnath, the next morning you can quickly hike up to Chandrashila Top.

Chopta Snowfall 7

The Best Season to Visit Chopta-Tunganth

It is technically accessible throughout the year although a lot depends on weather and landslides. The winter trek is more difficult as the route is completely covered in snow. But the best season is spring and early summer when the Rhododendrons are in full bloom. Between March to early May should be your preferred time.

Chopta Rhododendrons 12

Can I get snowfall in Chopta?

It obviously snows in the winter. But you can get it even in the spring or early summer. But it depends on your luck. A sudden storm or rain can dramatically reduce the temperature and cause a snowfall. This time, we did get lucky and witnessed both snowfall and rhododendrons in March .

How long is the Chopta Tungnath Trek?

The actual trek is around 4-5 KMs from the starting point on the road to the temple of Tungnath and should not take more than 2.5 hours for an average trekker.

Can we enter the Temple?

14206705306 63cc949cd8 o1

The Tungnath Temple gets closed in the winter and remains so in spring too. During this time, the deity is moved down to Ukhimath. It reopens sometime in the summer. However, you can still visit the temple, although the main door of the sanctum sanctorum will remain shut.

How Long is the Chandrashila Trek?

Chandrashila is a further couple of kilometers from Tungnath. It should take another hour of trekking from the temple.

What to buy at Chopta?

The squash made of Rhododendron, called Buransh by the locals is supposed to be good for health. You will get to buy bottles at the restaurants in Chopta.

Where and what is Deoria Tal?

Most people also cover the lake called Deoria Tal in this trip, which is in a slightly different direction but not very far from Chopta. You approach the lake from Sari Village, which is around 15 kms away from Chopta. On a clear day, you can see reflections of Chaukhamba and other peaks on the water although I have never been lucky in that sense.

DSC 0543

How to Reach Sari Village and Deoria Tal?

You will find shared cars at Ukhimath going towards Sari. They should not cost much per head although I don’t remember the exact amount now. Also, while there is a motorable road, there is also a steep trek to Sari Village from the main road, which starts from a village called Mastura (see map). This is a beautiful stretch of terrace cultivations that reminded me of another hike in GHNP .

What to do at Deoria Tal?

Deoria Tal is in a comparatively lower region at around 2300 metres and you need to trek for around 2.5 kms from Sari Village to reach it. You can camp by the side of the lake. The tour operators at Sari can help you with that.

Sari Village (3)

Where to stay at Sari or Deoria Tal?

Accommodation in Sari used to be cheap and basic when I visited in 2014. But this time I noticed that several new constructions have come up and the prices have also shot up. People were quoting prices like INR 1500-2000 although I think they can be brought down with negotiation. Most of the people in the village are involved in tourism and trekking. The same people can also organize trekking.

Where and what is Kartik Swami?

As you can see from the map, Kartik Swami is located on a slightly different route, but again, not too far away. It is basically a temple on a hilltop, dedicated to Kartik, the son of Shiva. A short 3 KM hike starts from a place called Kanakchauri, 40 KMs from Rudraprayag.

Why visit Kartik Swami?

Apart from the temple, you can get an excellent view of many peaks from here on a clear day. You can 360-degree unobstructed views from the top and even at the starting point, the peaks are visible. The whole stretch is covered with rhododendrons.

Kartik Swamy Temple

How to Reach Kartik Swami?

  • From Rudraprayag, just look for buses going to Pokhari. Kanakachauri is on the way and you will reach it easily in an hour and a half.
  • However, if you are coming from the Chopta side, there will be no direct connectivity. In that case the suggested route is Chopta-Ukhimath-Banswara-Mohankhal-Kanakchauri. You may have to change your vehicle (mostly shared cars) at each of the points.

Where to stay in Kartik Swami?

We just did the trek and came out to Rudraprayag and did not stay ourselves. There is an expensive-ish accommodation at Kanakchauri as per my knowledge. But the best option is to stay near the temple itself. You need to talk to the priest about this.

Are there any other treks in the region?

Yes, there can be scores of trails in the region. The trail to Rudranath, another of the Panch Kedars along with Tungnath, is nearby. We did one part of this trail during my recent visit, to the shrine of Devi Anusuya and Atri Muni, which was an experience beyond my wildest imaginations.

Check this post for the Anusuya and Atri Muni Trek .

Anasuya Atri Muni Trek 20

What is the right season for Rhododendrons?

All over the Himalayas, the rhododendrons bloom in the spring season. The exact timing can fluctuate according to weather conditions. But March and April should be safe bets. You should see both red and pink rhododendrons.

Can you connect us to a guide?

While I trekked without a guide, you can surely hire one from Sari Village. They can also help you arrange for camping equipment such as tents and good quality sleeping bags to withstand the cold and take you to more remote areas that you cannot do alone.

I can suggest Umendra Singh Negi of Chaukhamba Himalayan Adventure for this purpose.

I am 69+ and my wife is 64+ we are stationed at Haridwar, practically with no health problem except age.I am driving my car any where we go.Now suggest me which route we should take for Tungnath treak.Time is not a problem but it should be economical..

The route is obvious sir… Rudraprayag to Ukimath to Chopta… Just figure out the places to stay at Chopta before you go to avoid incovenience

' src=

Your DIY guide is good! I am planning to do the Chopta – Tunganath and VOF treks this year. Could you tell me best time to visit to get clear views of Himalayas? Last year in May I trekked from Munsiyari to Khuliya top and the sky was completely hazy, hiding all the peaks all day long. Huge disappointment for me. Even your photos show cloudy skies.

Thanks for dropping by… The weather in the hills is completely unpredictable… May should have been better… June and July will be even more difficult in terms of clarity of views… I suggest you try something post-monsoon/autumn season…

Have you seen my trips from last september ?

Thanks for the reply. I saw pics of Chitkul just now. Amazing pics. Yes, I should will plan for Sept/ Oct instead.

' src=

i want to visit tunganath at september . for this reson i want a gide . please help about this matter .

There s no need for a guide… you can do it yourself…

Excellent write up and the information is placed so well. The picture frames show the maximum view of the area. We a group of 5 are going to these areas in the first week of May 2016 as well as to Parvathi valley. Your blogs and info are so much helpful in our planning. Thank you so much and wish you to have many more beautiful trips in future. Chris

Hi, We are a group of 7 adults and 2 children, out of which 3 are senior citizen. 1. Can kids aged 12 and 11 do this trek? They are very active kids and have trekked before. 2. Where can we leave our parents while doing this trek as they cant walk with us? 3. Is Sari a better place for them or Rudraprayag? We shall need good accomodation facilities. 4. Do we need to hire a guide for the trek? 5. If so, whom will you suggest?

Thanks a lot in advance. Regards.

I did come across a group with several young kids and they seemed to be fine. It is not that long a trek and should be fine. Your parents can probably stay at Rudraprayag and visit the temples out there. You can also consider Devaprayag that comes before it.

Sari is a small village. Very convenient for the trek and great views. But not sure about all the facilities. Rudraprayag is a proper town that will have everything.

It can be done without guides, the route is straightforward. If you must take one, you will find them in Sari village.

Hi, read the DIY details, want to visit tungnath/ chandrashila next , have very limited 4 days in hand. Just few queries 1. is it possible to reach chopta to haridwar by road in a day, basically how long does it take? 2. I guess stay arrangements can be done in Chopta? 3. where to take permits from as i read on many blogs? 4. can i do chopta to tungnath/ chandrashila in a day & back? Thank you so much!

You can easily reach Sari or Chopta from Haridwar in one day… start early in the morning and you will have time left for the Deoria Tal trek in the afternoon…

You can stay at Tungnath after the trek…

I am not sure what permits you talk about. We did not need any. Probably it is needed if you go to Chopta from Deoria Tal directly through the jungles… it is an alternate route through Rohini Bugyal that I mentioned. I have not done it but you will need a guide for that purpose.

It is possible but ideal would be to trek to Tungnath from Chopta, spend a night up there, summit Chandrashila the next morning, and then come back.

It is a very informative post and photos are very beautiful as well. I have a plan to visit the place in the month of September.

Can you tell me wheather Chowkhamba peak will remain snow covered in this time of year ?

Hi, I think the peaks always remain snow covered.

' src=

Hi Jitaditya,

A very well written snapshot with the required info, thank u for this. However, please suggest some stay options at Chopta, planning a trip to Chopta > Tungnath > Chopta > Chandrashila this month. And if you think, Chopta is not an option then as per your blog, its best to stay at Sari. Request you to please suggest if we should cover Deori Tal as well and also include some place worth the visit nearby, its for about a week that we look to travel for. Also wanted to know if we would be able to find some snow in the month of April at Chopta or any other place. Would we be fortunate to find some snow at Auli though?

Thank you for your inputs and time in advance. 🙂

' src=

We are planning to visit this trek in January end. Is this right time to visit this place as we want to see snowfall.

Yes you will see a lot of snow although trekking I guess is harder in snow. You may need some guides.

' src=

This is an excellent primer for those heading for chopta deoria tal trek. More so for independent trekkers since most guided operators have guide and everything is already arranged. The views are stunning…Must do trek!

' src=

Well written guide and a lot of helpful information. The views are also quite good.

' src=

Chopta looks like a beautiful place for a trek. I think I’d definitely like to go in the spring – the picture with the Rhododendrons in bloom sold me. Love the view from the top as well!

' src=

Your pictures are always so beautiful and transport me to the destination. I have, unfortunately, never seen Himalayan Monals, so that certainly made for a pretty picture. And thanks for the guide details, that’s always useful to make plans 🙂

' src=

I have read this post about a year back when I was searching for some information to choose between trek to Kedarkantha and Tunganath. I chose to do the Kedarkantha trek then. This post came as a reminder that my trek to Tunganath is still pending.

' src=

A squash made of Rhododendrons? That definitely sounds interesting and I would love to try that. Chopta looks like a nice place to trek. I had only heard of Chopta valley in Sikkim before , not of this one.

' src=

The Chopta trek seems really mesmerizing. We always look forward to your posts as they cover some of the most picturesque places in Uttarakhand. This one too is a real eye opener to the ethereal beauty of this enchanted land. I love the picture of the pheasant, looks so beautiful.

' src=

' src=

What an amazing place to see 🙂 I would love to visit and admire all these incredible views. Very informative and useful post!

' src=

This looks so beautiful! I really want to go trekking again! Will hopefully find a nice trip for this summer 🙂 🙂

' src=

It sounds like an easy trek to do with beautiful sights to see on the way. I would do the detour to see the lake as well, it looks very nice. I can’t believe how cheap it is to spend the night at Chopta. That’s like £3-£4/night!

' src=

Very useful guide on Chopta. Never knew of the place.. so bad my GK! 😛 🙂 I loved reading the queries you are getting and your answers. Good work! Keep at it!

' src=

Thank you Jitaditya Narzary for taking the trouble to put it so beautifully & informative

' src=

Sometimes when we get tired of those same old planned and touristy places we want to escape to places like Chopta where we can get lost amidst nature. No one to guide or assist except nature itself to allure us into its pristine landscapes. Those vistas of the green meadows and the lush green hills are awe-inspiring. Thanks for such wonderful posts of places we hadn’t known much about.

' src=

Looks like an amazing place for hiking/trekking. India seems to have so much to offer and each place really has something of its own. Hope that I will be able to see it all for myself one day. 🙂

Kartik Swami Temple In Uttarakhand: History

dramatically amazing

According to Hindu Mythology, one day, Lord Shiva challenged his sons Ganesha and Kartikeya by saying that whoever will complete seven rounds of the universe first will be rewarded. On hearing that, Kartikeya headed to circle the universe on his vehicle. On the other hand, Ganesha stepped forward and took seven rounds of his parents — Shiva and Parvati. This act of Ganesha impressed the Shiva, and he gave the privilege of being worshipped first to Ganesha. When Kartikeya heard about it, he decided to sacrifice his body and bones to his father as reverence. The narrative states that the entire incident occurred at the site of this temple.

There is a legend that Lord Shiva once told their sons Lord Kartik and Lord Ganesha to take a round of the universe and the one who comes first will get the privilege to be worshipped on all auspicious occasions. Kartik went to cover the universe but Lord Ganesha showed his intelligence and took a round of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and said that for him they are the whole universe. Lord Shiva impressed by his intelligence and his love for them gave the privilege to be worshipped first. Lord Kartik got angry with this news and tore himself apart, he gave his flesh to mother Parvati and bones to his father Lord Shiva. In this temple the idol represents Lord Kartik’s bones.

The temple has a naturally carved idol of Kartik Swami on a marble type rock. Behind the temple, is a narrow path which goes down to a pond from where the water is brought for pujas.

Kartik Swami Temple – A Vantage Point For Panoramic Peaks

Trekking doesn’t necessarily mean a long, back- breaking strenuous journey on foot. Instead, it is possibly the best way to explore the commanding mountain ranges owing to its vast array of varied landscapes and the amazing terrain locations.

Trekking in India has gained a lot of momentum because the tourists are blessed with the visual treats of striking landscapes, aesthetically beautiful trails, flora and fauna while trekking these mountain ranges.

Trekking in Uttarakhand , in the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas has always been enchanting for me. While flipping through the pages of a travel magazine, my eyes fell upon a photograph of a temple. The beatific appeal of the temple and the trekking images related to it captivated my mind. Instantaneously, I started exploring on this holy shrine and scheduled a trip to the Kartik swami temple and its adjacent trekking places.

Trekking Himalayas essentially requires an ethical planning of the route and the season. We, a group of four Himalayan Lovers, planned to visit the Kartik swami Temple during the boisterous religious festival of the Bengalis Durga Puja . We headed for the NSCB International Airport, Kolkata on 22nd of October, 2019. Fortunately, the flight was scheduled on time and after two hours; we arrived at the IGI Airport, New Delhi.

From the Airport, we hired a cab for the Old Delhi railway station. After a brief stopover, we boarded the Mussoorie Express which departed at 10:15 at night and left for Haridwar. The first day was spent in a whirl of feverish activities and we fell asleep as the day closed upon us.

Day – 2

On the next morning at about 7 Am, we got down at one of the ancient cities of India, Haridwar. It is inundated in an aura of divinity accentuated by the chanting of mantras. We decided to slow down to take a tea break and revitalise ourselves while appreciating the surroundings. After a bit of bargaining, we settled in a Maruti Eco for rupees 2500 which took us to our next landing place, Rudraprayag.

The clock struck ten when we left for Rudraprayag after having our breakfast. It wasn’t my first trekking trip to Uttarakhand but this time, it was the “Char Dham Road Project” which arrested my attention. The road was too busy for leisurely contemplation of the scenery owing to the erratic hill cutting and mismanaged muck dumping.

With the passage of time, we reached at Devprayag . It is regarded as the most pious point because at this locus, river Bhagirathi which rises at Gaumukh and Alakananda, meet to form Bhagirathi. We halted at Devprayag for about ten minutes as we took a little time for tea and photographs. The union of the two streams in the delicate framework of hills and valleys eased my soul.

Eventually, we reached Rudraprayag at 2:30 in the afternoon. Rudraprayag is the second holy confluence of this route where river Mandakini which flows from Kedarnath and the milky white Alakananda which flows from Badrinath make a sangam .

From Rudraprayag, we shifted to another car and left for a small yet scenic village, Kanakchauri which served as the starting point for our trek to the Karthik swami Temple. Kanakchauri is 39 kms away from Rudraprayag and we were travelling along the Rudraprayag Pokhri main road. The route to Kanakchauri was manifested with aesthetic beauty of the Himalayas . There were several twists and turns on the uphill road.

We eventually reached Kanakchauri at 5’o clock in the evening and started looking for a staying inn. Between the two accommodations, namely, “ Mayadeep Resort ” and “ Sree Karthikey Palace ” we chose to stay in “Sree Karthikey Palace” against rupees 1000 per double bed room with attached bathroom and geyser. The management staffs actually deserve an appreciation for their warm and cordial service. Sipping a cup of tea with hills and greenery all over made the scene perfect so much so that it revitalised our souls as we strode around the village.

As the night fell upon us, we returned to our hotel and were delighted to know about the availability of non vegetarian cuisines in there as we ordered Chapattis and Chicken Curry for the supper. We requested the Manager to permit us to the kitchen premises as we wanted to prepare the Mountain Chicken curry in Bengali style.

While we were getting the dinner ready, we started conversing about our plan for the next day over a cup of tea and eventually decided to start our trek at 3o’clock in the morning for Karthik swami Temple . We were served by the dinner after a while. Since we were famished, we gulped the food within no time. A lingering spell of coldness settled in as we fell fast asleep.

Day – 3

One of the hotel management staff knocked at around 2:30am to wake us up. We hurriedly got up from our beds and started equipping ourselves with our flannels and woollens and left the place after blessing our own selves with a cup of early morning tea.

Under a moonless night, with nothing but wilderness for company, we trod through the jungle. We were accompanied by a local guide, Sunil (who was sent by our hotel manager) as it was a 3 kilometres trek through the jungle patch at night. It was 3:15am when we started off with our trekking and with a bit of huff and puff we gradually elevated forward.

However, after forty five minutes of continuous walk, we stopped at the sizzling sound coming from a bush. After inspecting the thickets with the flickering flame of our torches and headlights, we halted for a while as were cautioned by Sunil regarding the presence of bears in that region. After ten minutes, we forged ahead, nonchalantly and reached an ashram after crossing the jungle. The Karthik Swami temple was about 700 metres away from this place.

The clock ticked 5:30am when we reached at the flight of stairs which would take us to one of the highly revered shrine – The Karthik Swami temple. The colour of the sky seemed to change, from blue to pink to yellow with every passing minute. Eventually, we climbed up the stairs and stooped before the temple gate which was dotted with numerous bells. We tolled the bells and shrieks of “ Jay Kartikeyo ” reverberated around the place.

With the first light of the day, the white rock masses of the Himalayas, bathed in the most wonderful and aesthetic hues. By then, we were all set with our cameras fixed on the tripods to capture the enchanting beauty of the golden hour in our lenses. We stood in an amphitheatre of snow crowned peaks and the mighty ranges of the Garhwal and Kumaun Himalayas stood at 180 degrees, right in front us.

The first ray of the Sun lightened up the Chowkhamba peak at first and gradually enlightened the Kedarnath peak , Nilkantha peak , Mandani peak , Balakun Peak , Bandarpunch peak and the rest! We were marvelled at the changing of the shades of the colours from red to golden yellow and silver, with the passage of time. We were immersed in the ecstatic beauty of the Himalayas and took near about three hours to appreciate it.

Descending from the Karthik Swami temple wasn’t tiresome and it took us about an hour to reach Kanakchauri once again.

After taking a quick shower, we had a good breakfast and fuelled ourselves for our next destination, Sonprayag . We left for Sonprayag with an intention to visit the Trijugi Narayan and then head towards Kedarnath, next day.

Before we move towards our next point, it’s ought to be noted that when one makes a trip to the Kedarnath-Badrinath circuit, one must trek to the Karthik Swami Temple to witness and experience the aura and magnificence of the Himalayas.

-: BEST TIME TO VISIT KARTIK SWAMI TEMPLE :-

Thus, it is advisable to check the weather conditions before heading out for Kartik Swami temple in monsoon.

The month of October is the commencement of winter season here which lasts till March. November to January offers the clear and majestic view of snow-clad Himalayan ranges. Moreover, the temperature during these months ranges from 0°C to 10°C. Make sure to wear warm woollen clothes when you visit the temple during winter.

Kartik Swami Temple Hike,Kanak Chauri,Uttarakhand

Photo of Arkapal Bandyopadhyay

Venturing for the first time in the garhwal himalayas with a short trek trip on my mind, deoriatal with tunganath ,chandrashila was on my cards. But extreme weather heavy snowfalls from Chopta onwards made me change my plans . After searching online and going through www.indiamike.com made my mind to do the short hike to kartik swami temple from kanak chauri village .We reached Haridwar at around 7.30 am,took a shared jeep to Rudraprayag .We were lucky to get the middle seats of a 10 seater bolero.Haridwar as always cramped with tourists and I could easily hear folks speaking bengali around me after a long time .We took few snacks for our long journey, started at 8 am and stopped around 10.00am on a nice roadside dhaba after crossing deoprayag - confluence of bhagirathi and alakananda forming the mighty Ganges . After getting to know all the different prayags in Uttarakhand the only thing which had come to my mind is that these would be good multiple choice questions in any competitive exams .

The dhaba had good views of the snow capped peaks and the chilly wind outside forced me to open my backpack to get my hoodie . After a breafast of alu parathas we boarded for the next part of our long journey. We reached rudraprayag around 1.30 pm. Roads of uttarakhand did impressive ,mostly good roads with clumsy patches once a while. We boarded the next bus which was fortunately the last one to pokhiri. Roads started to narrow down , steep cliffs ,small clumps of houses on the valleys, and occasional snow capped mountains on the bends made my day as we reached chopta after a 1.5 hours . After getting to know from locals uttarakhand has two choptas, the other was in the well known route of Tungnath temple. The journey of 40 kms to kanakchauri village took 2.5 hrs with many halts in between.Kanak Chauri main market was a small one with hardly 10-15 shops on the road. The village extended down the valley , just crossing the main market there was the paved path for the kartik swami temple hike.Few gloomy guest houses on the road as we went to search for accomodation .A guy lead us to mayadeep rest house down the slope, after a bargain he did settle for a good deal. Though a remote village the facilities were really impressive. A change of gear was urgent as temperature was dropping down and three layers made me feel comfortable .An evening stroll was tempting as I headed towards the temple trail but to my disappointment clouds covered most of the landscape.

Next morning after a quick breakfast we started around 8 am. It was holi ,few people on the road got very excited and made us colourful in no time .The trail was paved for first few bends with gradual ascent ,paved path merged with the jungle trail.Rhododendrons bloomed over the path.Right side of the view had partially cloud covered snow capped peaks with chaukhamba dominating the views with kedar group of peaks, swargrohini and bandarpunch to name the others .Trail had few passers and occasional villagers passed us carrying logs and wild grass. With each bend the landscapes opened up and the kartik swami temple at the peak became visible . I could localise guptakashi with the help of a localite and road leading to Ukhimath ,with kedar group of peaks and swargrohini glacier .

After about an hour and a half with lots of photobreaks in between a few house and restrooms had appeared .The trail from there was a steep ascent with a mix of stairs and stones. The priest stayed alone up there.Usually travellers who want to spend the night up here stay there. He can arrange for basic food and tea.Tourist can donate as per their wish.We took a 10 mins break as the priest offered us tea .There were three other guys from rudraprayag who had stayed there for the night.

As we headed up to the temple the clouds heaped over us .It was steep ,stairs in the beginning leading to stoned path .The resthouses gradually miniatured in the backdrop. After 20 mins we finally reached the cliff base, it had a "road to heaven " like feel to it .As we reached the top there were bells all around , with the temple right up in clifftop . Few other villagers were offering their prayers as I roamed around to get the feel of the place. It took us around 2.5 hrs to climb the peak which was at around 3098m above the sea level. As I looked around locals explained me the routes that head towards guptakashi and ukhimath in the north ,chandrashila peak just in front of cloud covered chaukhamba, the nandadevi peaks were visible at the extreme east from there .The zigzag road to pokhri , our next phase of journey was a beauty. The path from kanakchauri was also a delight to watch. After a short orientation to surroundings we offered puja and prayers to lord kartik swami. Temple as told by locals was more than 200 years old and that is was soon going to become the fifth dham in uttarakhand after Kedarnath , Badrinath , gangotri and Yamunotri . In the month of may and june there is a huge influx of devotees here ,otherwise its a relatively peaceful and secluded place amidst the mountains unlike the other dhams.I was a bit disappointed as I could not see the snow peaks from the clifftop but didn't know at that time what god had in reserve for me for the next morning .Heading back to the restrooms was fast as the priest offered tea and lunch. We went around his residence and came to know that his father had been the priest for last 50-60 years, he expired last year and he took his fathers place as chief priest .Coming down was fast and it hardly took 40 mins to reach kanak chauriAfter spending an hour in the market it turned cloudy and it started raining , so we were forced to return to room .

Post dinner I went out and to my surprise rain had stopped and it was full moon , I could not resist my temptation to head up to the market and check out whether the peaks were visible in moonlight .I put on all the winter clothes I had, took my cam and tripod and headed up the slope to the market in the dark .There was pindrop silence as I went into the temple trail, I was mersmerised to see the crystal clear view of the panorama which had eluded me till now.Without any further delay I started setting my tripod and as I removed my gloves I could feel the chill at 10pm night. The night view made my day and after spending an hour clicking, battery empty symbol flashed in my camera, fully contended I headed back to my room .Next morning fully satisfied we headed to pokhiri village to take jeep for Karnaprayag for the next part of my trip.
