There are various lodges and guest houses in the region through which you can enjoy a boat safari at Kabini as well. Going on a Kabini safari on a boat in the Kabini river would be the perfect way to admire the lush green surroundings, and nearby flora and fauna.
On the banks of the Kabini River, you may spot a herd of majestic Asiatic elephants peacefully bathing, feeding, and getting on with their lives. Amongst the plethora of wildlife present on the river banks, you may observe smooth-coated otters playing in the water, marsh crocodiles lazing on the banks, as well as a myriad of water birds dipping in and out of the water.
For a detailed overview of the beautiful birds of Kabini, read our blog, “Birds of Kabini”(upcoming). A boat safari would surely be one of the most innovative and exciting ways to explore Kabini and absorb its beauty. These safaris are operated by Jungle Lodges & Resorts (owned by the Karnataka government).
Jungle Safari
This is the most common and popular way to visit and explore the exceptionally beautiful and lavish forests of Kabini. You can make either a mini-bus or jeep Kabini safari booking to reach the heart of the forest, and take a look at the wilderness from up-close. By going on such a safari, you may get the opportunity to spot various wild animals like tigers, leopards, elephants, and sambar deer, as well as birds like a peacock and crested hawk-eagle.
This jungle safari is controlled by government authorities. Hence, you have to follow certain terms and conditions when going on this Kabini safari. Below are the various vehicle options you can find for the jungle safari. It is important that you carefully check out the details of each of them, and then opt to book the one that perfectly suits your requirements and budget.
Jeep Safaris
Jeep safaris are operated by Jungle Lodges & Resorts. Kabini jeep safari booking can be made through the resorts you are staying in if they are associated with the forest department. Your resort booking can get you a place on this safari, and its expenses are generally included in the tariff itself.
26-seater mini-bus (canter) Safaris
Operated by the Forest Department, these budget-friendly safaris are an ideal choice for people enjoying their trip with a large group of friends or family members. The mini-bus safari runs twice each day, and these Kabini safari timings are from 6.30 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. , and again in the afternoon from 3.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m on weekdays and the weekends, there are 4 safaris conducted at 6.00 a.m to 7.30 a.m , 7.30 a.m to 9.00 a.m and 3.00 p.m to 4.30 p.m , 4:30 p.m to 6.00 p.m later on in the day.
Its tickets have to be purchased from the Forest Department booking counter present at the Nagarhole National Park or can be booked online. These counters open about 30 minutes before the start of the safaris, and hence it is important to be on time to make the bookings.
The Nagarhole National Park has two distinctive safari zones- Zone A and Zone B. Zone B is close to the Kabini backwaters. The safari tours booked through Jungle Lodges & Resorts can cover only one of these zones at a time. While on the other hand, the Forest Department canter safaris enjoy unrestricted access to both of these zones.
Making Kabini jungle safari booking
The boat, as well as the vehicular Kabini jungle safari bookings, can easily be made through your resort if you are staying in one of the tourism department lodges.
Alternatively, you can make your Kabini jungle safari (on a canter) by visiting the Dammanakatte Forest Department office in Antharasanthe. This office is located close to the Kabini forest gate. You shall need a valid government ID card to make your bookings from there.
While there are several private lodges and resorts present near the Kabini jungle, not all of them have permission to make safari bookings for their guests. Hence, it is important that you properly check out the details of the hotel you are booking your stay in.
Kabini jungle safari online booking
Quite recently, the Forest Department has launched an online booking facility for a Kabini safari at the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve website (www.nagaraholetigerreserve.com). This Kabini jungle safari online booking facility comes as a huge boon for tourists.
For a long time, to book a canter safari, wildlife enthusiasts had to sometimes stand in a huge queue at Damanakatte. The online booking facility now allows people to avoid any long queues and enables them to make their bookings within just a few minutes. Additionally, as the early morning safari starts at 6.30 a.m., many tourists had to leave Mysore very early in the morning, to make their bookings in time for all these years. This problem is easily solved with the online booking facility.
Moreover, as you can make Kabini jungle safari online booking right from your home, you do not have to waste a single moment of the tour in standing in queues, and shall be able to enjoy your holidays optimally by engaging in diverse, exciting activities amidst the enthralling greenery and natural beauty of this wonderland of Karnataka.
Steps to make your booking:
- Visit the official website of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, which is
- www.nagaraholetigerreserve.com

The same document number as entered on the website while making the online booking has to be produced at the time of the actual safari.
Final Thoughts
The diverse wildlife of Kabini offers extraordinary game viewing. The beauty of a Kabini safari is amplified because of the various available options. While the boat safari on the stunning backwaters gives an outer view of the forest, the jungle safaris take us into the depths of it. One can sight the spectacular wildlife in its natural habitat, on both the safaris.

Located in Karnataka, Nagarhole National Park is one of the most prominent Tiger reserves in the country. The lush jungle is named after the Nagarhole river, which runs through it. Also known as Kabini National Park, the lush jungles are home to the Bengal tiger and a lone Black panther. The big black cat is extremely rare. A part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the national park is spread over an area of 643 square kilometers, adjacent to Bandipur National Park. According to the 2015 tiger Census, there are close to 100 tigers that live in the forest reserve.
Nagarhole National Park is Where Nature Comes Alive
Calling Nagarhole National Park scenic would be an understatement. The lush valleys, brimming waterfalls, and the undulating hills that dot the landscape are a treat for sore eyes. The forest reserve is densely covered with rich flora that makes for an exciting journey by itself. Combine it with the varied wildlife that calls these jungles home and you have an adrenaline-filled vacation on your hands.
Tigers are the star attraction of Nagarhole National Park. However, there is a healthy predator-prey ratio in place, which aids conservation efforts. The national park is home to Leopards, Sloth bears, and plenty of Asian elephants that are a sight to behold. You can also spot Indian giant flying squirrel, European otters, and Golden jackals in the region.
The tropical forest is also a heaven for birdwatchers. You can spot several critically endangered birds here, such as the Nilgiri wood pigeon and the Oriental white-backed vulture.
Nagarhole National Park is the perfect place to have an intimate conversation with nature.

How to book a kabini safari – here’s a detailed guide including booking url.
Kabini is an amazing jungle to go on a safari. It’s probably the best jungle to visit in the south and the best from Bengaluru. Kabini is actually the southern part of Nagarhole National Park & Tiger Reserve, which is on the banks of river Kapila (aka Kabini) but actually it’s on the banks of backwaters of Kabini (nearby Kabini dam was built and these are the backwaters). This Kabini river divides Kabini jungle from the Bandipur jungle. Because it’s on the banks of the river, you will have amazing sightings round the year. Kabini is approx. 70 kms south of Mysore and approx. 220 kms south of Bengaluru (Bangalore). It takes approx. 5 hours from Bangalore airport and roads are good and there are many very nice restaurants on the way.
I have met a lot of people in Bengaluru who want to visit Kabini but they get extremely confused on how to get a safari there. A visit to Kabini without a safari is like going to Paris and not going to the Eiffel tower or visiting New York City without visiting the Statue of Liberty. But unfortunately it’s not as easy as visiting either. There is not enough documentation to explain how it works nor how to book the tickets and most end up booking a resort over there and coming back without a safari and then regret – wish I had spoken to you before. This is the article for all of you to read, understand and better plan Kabini before booking it.
There are two kinds of Safari over there – one mainly for day visitors who can go to the safari point in Antharsanthe village (google coordinates 12.014191117355328, 76.2573761415398 – just plug this numbers in the google map and you will get the exact location of the safari point. This point is also called Damannakatte) on the borders of Kabini Jungle, stand in a line, get those safari tickets, [there was an inline option to book but unfortunately it’s down eternally. Update: try Nagarahole Tiger Reserve – Karnataka Forest Dept. should work now hopefully], enjoy the safari ride and then come back to your place, be it Mysore or Bengaluru or any nearby town or even nearby resort. The safari happens every one hour in a forest dept van in the morning starting from 6am usually until the last ride which generally starts by 9am. Then again it starts at 3pm in the afternoon and again every one hour with the last ride at 5pm. This is the cheapest option to do Safari in Kabini and you can stay in nearby budget lodges. These lodges are cheap but they won’t help you to procure the safari tickets on your own.
How to book safari in Bandipur?
And know more answers about bandipur.
Then there is a second option. This option is possible only for those who stay in one of those kabini resorts and it is reserved only for the guests of these affiliated resorts only. This safari is conducted by another govt dept which belongs to the hospitality dept rather than to the forest dept. Most of the affiliated resorts are luxury resorts which are on the banks of the river Kabini and without saying, are very expensive. If you want to book the stay in any of these affiliated resorts please go to https://packages.wildtrails.in and can book them. They will assure you the best of the service and guaranteed safari tickets. Some of the affiliated resorts are Kabini river lodges, Serai, Evolve Back, Waterwoods, Kaav, Bison, to name a few. Please note that safari ticket prices are extra on top of the resort prices. Also when booking with resorts, always make sure you book all meal plans else you don’t get food anywhere in the jungle and the on-site prices are super expensive. Also make sure you book safari tickets ahead (WildTrails will do that for you) as the number of safari tickets are limited and there is a quota per resort and during weekends and holidays, they have more guests than the quota and hence many will miss out for not booking in advance.

What is Kabini?
Kabini forest is a wildlife sanctuary located in Karnataka, India and is part of Nagarhole National Park. The park is located in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and stretches over 847 sq km. It is home to a variety of animals, such as elephants, tigers, leopards, deer, and more. Additionally, the sanctuary is home to a beautiful Kabini river and tranquil backwaters, making it a popular destination for boat safaris.
Why is Kabini such a popular tourist destination?
In recent years, Kabini has become increasingly popular with tourists for a number of compelling reasons. First, its abundant biodiversity and wildlife, including majestic tigers, leopards, and black panthers, make it a haven for nature lovers. Secondly, Kabini’s stunning landscape, which combines serene backwaters, lush forests, and picturesque landscapes, creates a mesmerizing setting for travelers. Furthermore, Kabini provides an immersive and adventurous experience with wildlife safaris, boat rides, and birdwatching. Furthermore, the region’s conservation and sustainable tourism practices contribute to its appeal, allowing visitors to witness wildlife in its natural habitat while supporting conservation efforts.
The History of Kabini
Kabini forest, like BR Hills Tiger Reserve , was originally a hunting ground for the Maharajas of Mysore. The area was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the 1950s, and hunting was banned. Kabini has since become a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.
The types of safaris available in Kabini
Kabini offers a variety of safaris for visitors. Kabini forest consists of two zones, A and B. The following are some of the top things to do while you are here:
Canter bus safari
A budget-friendly way to explore Kabini’s forests is by canter bus safaris. Canter buses are large, open-windowed vehicles that can accommodate groups of people. On weekdays, safaris run from 6.30 to 9 in the morning and 3.30 to 6 in the evening. Over the weekend, the same safari is conducted in two batches, each taking 1.30 hours. Morning safaris are from 6 to 7.30 and then 7.30 to 9. Evening safaris run from 3 to 4.30 and then 4.30 to 6.
It is advisable to check the website for the most recent timings. It is necessary to book the canter bus safari online . Walk-in registration is accepted as long as seats are available. I prefer Canter buses over jeeps since they provide a better vantage point to observe wildlife and take photographs.
Arrive at the Kakanakote Safari Center at least 30 minutes before your safari time. In case you booked your safari online, you need to approach the booking counter to obtain your bus number and seat number.
Canter bus safaris are currently priced at INR 610 + GST per person per safari on weekdays and INR 460 + GST on weekends.
- The mornings in Kabini are usually misty, so it is advisable to take a safari at 7.30 am on weekends.
- Canter buses operated by Karnataka Forest Department are not restricted to a particular zone. Based on the sighting of tigers or leopards at the time of your safari, they can cross the zone.
Premium Canter bus safari
With their premium canter bus, Kabini now offers 3-hour safaris every day. With its 2×1 seating arrangement, this bus offers more legroom and spacious seating. Due to its smaller seating capacity, this bus is less crowded. An important feature of the bus is its semi-transparent roof. Besides this, they have a large rear window that sometimes allows you to shoot wildlife that suddenly emerges from the bushes after you have left.
The premium canter bus cannot be booked online. You will need to arrive at Kakanakote Safari Center much earlier and try your luck with the counter booking. The safaris in this bus start at 6 in the morning and 3 in the evening every day. Safaris are scheduled to last three hours.
Premium canter bus safaris are currently priced at INR 855 per person per safari.
Jeep safari (operated by JLR)
Taking a jeep safari in Kabini is an exhilarating way to explore the wilderness in a private or semi-private vehicle. The safaris are conducted by JLR, which provides well-maintained jeeps and experienced guides. They are typically scheduled for 2-3 hours in the morning and evening. A Jeep Safari in Kabini costs around INR 2,800 + GST per person per safari, which is significantly higher than the canter bus. Because JLR has a limited number of jeeps, in-house guests are given first priority. Depending on available space, other visitors may be accommodated. A jeep can seat a maximum of ten people.
Jeep safaris start from Jungle Lodges and Resorts, about 12 km from Kakanakote Safari Center.
Van safari (operated by JLR)
There is a cheaper option to JLR Jeep Safari in Kabini. A Van safari is similar to a Canter bus safari offered by the Karnataka Forest Department from Kakanakote Safari Center. A Van Safari through JLR costs around INR 2,000 + GST per person per safari.
Note : Each JLR safari vehicle is assigned a specific zone. Vehicles assigned to Zone A cannot enter Zone B and vice versa.
Boat safari (operated by JLR)
Taking a boat safari in Kabini is a unique and serene way to discover the region’s stunning backwaters. Boat safaris are conducted by Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR), providing an opportunity to observe the rich birdlife, crocodiles, and other aquatic creatures in their natural habitat. Boat safaris typically operate in the early morning and late afternoon, lasting approximately one to two hours each. Guests staying at JLR are given priority over those staying at other hotels. A Boat Safari in Kabini costs around INR 2,500 + GST per person per safari.
Nature walk and bird watching
Nature walks and bird watching in Kabini offer an excellent opportunity to experience the stunning natural environment. Experienced guides lead you on these walks as you discover the region’s diverse flora and fauna and learn about their ecological significance. Be on the lookout for a variety of bird species as you stroll through the wilderness. Having the chance to experience Kabini’s wilderness and ecosystems is a serene and enlightening experience.
Coracle boat ride
A There is no better way to explore the Kabini backwaters than with a coracle boat ride. The traditional bamboo circular boats covered with waterproof material provide a unique way to explore the serene waterways of Kabini. Coracle rides are led by local fishermen, and offer picturesque views of the surrounding greenery as well as a chance to spot birds and other wildlife.
Planning a Kabini Safari
The most important thing to consider before embarking on a Kabini Safari adventure is to plan everything carefully. The following are some factors to consider when planning your trip to Kabini:
What’s the best time to go on a wildlife safari in Kabini?
A wildlife safari in Kabini is best enjoyed during the dry season, which typically lasts between November and May. Wildlife sightings are more likely during this time of year since the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to see animals in their natural habitat. February through May are my favorite months. They occur during the summer season when the forest’s internal water sources dry up, causing animals to come out for water, leading to exciting encounters. It is important to remember that Kabini is a year-round destination, and each season brings its own unique experiences and sightings.
What is the best way to get to Kabini?
The most convenient way to reach Kabini is through Mysore, the nearest major city. Kabini is about a 2-hour drive from Mysore. Nearest airport to Kabini is Mysore Airport, which offers limited connectivity. Another option is to fly into Bangalore, which is well-connected to both domestic and international flights. You can take a taxi or bus to Kabini, which is about a 4-hour drive from Bangalore. Another option is to take a train to Mysore, which is well-connected to major cities in India, and then continue the journey to Kabini by road.
What are the best places to stay during a Kabini safari?
There are a variety of accommodation options in Kabini , depending on your budget and preferences. You can choose from luxury resorts, mid-budget lodges, or eco-friendly homestays. These include renowned properties like The Serai , Evolve Back (formerly known as Orange County), and Kabini River Lodge (popularly known as JLR), which offer excellent amenities, wildlife-themed activities, and stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. They also offer private jeep safaris and guided nature walks in Kabini’s wilderness.
Several farmhouses and homestays offer comfortable rooms and essential amenities for travelers on a budget. Budget accommodations like these are perfect for backpackers, families , and solo travelers.
What should you pack for your Kabini safari?
When packing for a Kabini safari, it’s essential to be well-prepared for the wildlife adventure. Here are some items you should consider including in your packing list:
- Light and breathable clothing : Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing in neutral or earthy hues so you can blend in with the natural surroundings. Protect yourself from insects and the sun by wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants.
- Sturdy footwear : Pack comfortable walking shoes for jungle safaris. Ensure they provide good support and have a strong grip.
- Sun protection : Pack high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself against the sun.
- Insect repellent : Pack a Familycare insect repellent to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes and other insects.
- Binoculars and camera : Bring binoculars to get a better view of wildlife from far away. For those memorable moments, bring your camera with a telephoto lens.
- Personal medications and first aid kit : Pack an adequate supply of any medication you need or prescriptions you need on a regular basis. Carry a basic first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic cream, and medications for common ailments.
- Water bottle and snacks : Staying hydrated is crucial, so keep a reusable water bottle with you. Additionally, snacks can be useful for boosting energy during longer excursions.
- Lightweight backpack or daypack : When on safari, carrying a small backpack or daypack is convenient to carry your essentials, including water, snacks, a camera, and your personal belongings.
Make sure you check the weather forecast for the specific time of your visit to Kabini and pack accordingly. Additionally, you should inquire with your accommodation about any safari-related recommendations or requirements.

Thank you Mukunda ji. I take experiential budget trips to Kabini for 2N/3D. I do not book resorts. Please WhatsApp me on +91 94498 55835 if you are interested in traveling with me to Kabini. I will be happy to share detailed information.
I take only a small group of 3-5 people with me. If it is a family of 3 or more than I keep it exclusive for them.
Saw your post on Kabini, I am visiting on 4 Dec but not getting any keep booking, can you help with reliable source who can book a safari for me.
Thanks Yuvraj for stopping by. The safari can only be booked online. They do keep some slots for walk-in customers but it is too big a risk to take. Usually the queue starts 2-3 hours before the safari during the peak season and a very few can get it.
I regularly conduct personalized trips to Kabini with 3-4 liked-minded people. You may want to join me next time. Please visit https://turuhi.com/travelwithme to know more.

Kabini National Park Kabini Wildlife
Light and divine nature can be very enticing, but when they come together they help tremendously to discover the poetic charm that exists everywhere. We carry on being exploring for this magic in every bit of picturesque scenery that is in existence around us, whether it's through the lush green trees basking underneath the glorious blaze, sunbeams filtering down the leaves, shimmering the dews on the nib of the grassy turf, trails passively anticipating the footfalls. Composure in the resonance of crunching withered leaves naturally fallen on the land in the woods, a locale that would call you to sit down with a heart bursting of ecstatic moments and hide away from the complex world. For the period that Karnataka possesses the eminence of being the IT state of India in spite of that, the other edge typically encompasses extensive woodlands be swarming with creatures and the land is home to robust inhabitants of tigers and elephants. One can entitle Kabini as the hub of adventure in the state. Located on the banks of the river Kabini in the regions of Kodagi, The Kabini Forest Reserve has much to offer. With events including Kabini like jungle safaris, treks, boating, and even biking, your weekend will be anything but boring.
About Kabini
Kabini is sited in the south-west of Mysore and adjoining the borderlands of the state of Kerala which could be precisely a perfect weekend getaway. A 90 km drive from Mysore or 220 km drive from Bengaluru makes the approachability much easier for people from Karnataka and people from Kerala. A well-connected road and railway network, Kabini becomes an ideal destination for a weekend to spend in the lap of mother nature. An expanse of 55 acres, this reserve is presently part of the widespread Nagarhole National Park and grants asylum to many endangered species. Officially known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, the domain was formerly an exclusive hunting reserve of the former rulers of Mysore and the Colonial settlements in Karnataka. It's a region of untouched wilderness, with soothing forest, bubbling water currents, and a tranquil lake. Nagarhole is mustered with over 250 varieties of birds, elephants, sloth bear, bison, tiger, leopards, deer, wild boars and if you're a lover of Jungle Book then you might be thrilled to know you can catch sight of Bagheera or the Black Panther.
Wildlife in Kabini
One of the notable temptations and the most pleasing ways to take a look around the Kabini wildlife sanctuary, which covers a vast patch of the grove is via Jungle Safari. While roving in the park, one can spot a critically endangered oriental white-backed vulture and other exotic creatures like the eagle and the Nilgiri wood pigeon. Habitation of Indian Bison in Kabini exhilarates plenty. The wilds are immense, deep and peaceful. Driving carefully into it, through it, one must remain silent. You must willingly allow Mother Nature to assist you to reconnect with yourself. The gorgeous jungle stands up perennial and pristine, invites you into its folds. Nestled on the bank of Kabini River, another preferred option to explore the jungle is the boat safari. A motorized open boat may offer you the decent chance to be evidence of many birds like the Eagles, Serpent Eagles, Falcons, Fishing Eagles, Storks, Egrets, Ducks, Kites, Osprey, Indian Vultures or the Red Headed Vulture!! Making yourself at home in a beautiful resort, the safaris can be booked through the Jungle Lodges & Resorts (JLR). The boats are clearly more limited in observing the wildlife but do offer a change of scenery.
Local Food at Kabini
Any place is constantly taken into account the fact for its food and for stuffing your belly with mouth-watering delicacies, there are jungle resorts that consist of their own restaurants. One may also try local delicacies such as Dosa, Bisi Bele Bath, Akki Roti, Jolada Roti, Idli, Vada, Sambhar, Kesari Bath, Ragi Mudde, Uppittu, Vangi Bath and traditional and local sweets like Mysore pak, Chiroti.
Vegetation at Kabini
To explore deeper, at a roughly similar distance from Mysore, the Bandipur National Park spans an area of 874 sq kilometers. The park is perched at the intersection of the Deccan Plateau and the Western Ghats and the altitude of the park ranges from 680 meters to 1,454 meters. As an outcome, the park has a diversity of the biotic community, including dry deciduous forests, moist deciduous forests, and shrublands. The massive array of habitats helps to uphold a varied range of creatures. The park is fringed by the Kabini River in the north and the Moyar River in the south. Another lesser-known range of Nagarahole National Park is Sunkadakatte. It has restricted access to the public. The range is located close to the Kabini Reservoir, situated about 225 km from Bengaluru and 90 km from Mysore.
Best time to Visit Kabini National Park
The best-timed period to visit the sanctuary is from October to May. The monsoons may not be very pleasing. Kabini has lot of resorts, home stay and hotels. Few popular resorts which are popular in this region are Kabini Resorts.
How to Reach Kabini National Park
The nearest city from Kabini Reserve forest is Mysore, around 60 km away. SH-33 is the route to the Nagarhole range where Kabini reserve falls. Going from Bangalore to Kabini is a pleasant four to five-hour drive depending on the steps you have taken. Distance is 230 km through NH275. Enjoy the journey through important cultural centers like Ramanagram, Madur, Mandya, Shrirangapatna, Mysore, and Antharasanthe.
The nearest railway station is Mysore junction, which is 62 km away. You can rent a taxi from there and can reach Kabini in about 90 minutes via SH 33.
The nearest domestic airport is Mysore, 62 km away via State Highway 33 and 250 kilometers away from the nearest international airport, there is a four and a half hour journey through NH275 in Bangalore.
Photography at Kabini National Park
Certainly, eyes are the finest cameras human being can ever have, yet, photos are one of the few means to freeze a memory. Hence, for all those photography buffs, there is a lens renting alternative available to capture the incredible beauty of Kabini. This can be very helpful for wildlife photography lovers.
Elephant Safari- Explore the Kabini Wildlife
Another lesser-known range of Nagarahole National Park is Sunkadakatte. The range is located close to the Kabini Reservoir, situated about 225 km from Bengaluru and 90 km from Mysore. The drive along the backwaters of the Kabini reservoir has much more in stock for anyone. You may spot innumerable elephants, with the calves running beneath the mothers and grown-ups flinging mud on their backs. One can get remarkably intimate with nature at Sunkadakatte, with its untamed jungle and abundant wildlife. Kabini backwaters are an ideal camping site that enables you to absorb the pristine surroundings.
Trekking around Kabini
Kabini is fantastic for campsites and plan out a trek to the nearby peaks. Kumar Parvatha, at 1,712 m, is the sixth highest peak in Karnataka. Placed on the brink of Coorg and Dakshina Kannada, this towering peak reflects a share of the breathtaking Pushpagiri range of the Western Ghats. The path to Kumar Parvatha trek is delightful since it nabs you across some of the most splendid escapes of flora and fauna on either side. The other, Tadiyadamol is the highest mountain in Coorg (1750 m). This spot is around 250 km from Bangalore via Virajpet. The climb to this mount is gradient transit via meadow. Among many other options, at an elevation of 1,608 meters above sea level is the Brahmagiri Mountain range, which lies on the perimeter of Kodagu district. It is likely to trek to the mountaintop from either Kerala or Karnataka. Although, a special permit may be required for trekking from the Range Forest Officer. The hike from Karnataka laps Irupu Falls and Munikal Caves. On the Kerala side, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is a pilgrimage. Apart from the striking view from the summit, the plenty of flora and fauna along the way amplifies the charisma of the trek.

With BLADE India’s helicopter service covering the distance in an hour, and a host of accommodations to pick from, exploring this region becomes an easy adventure for lovers of the wild. 9 safari lodges and resorts in Kabini
Fireflies kabini.
This boutique farmstay in Kabini features eight rooms that dot a winding path by the backwaters. The result? Absolute privacy and soothing views of the lapping water from each accommodation, which is created either as a tent or suite done up in earthy architecture and design elements inspired by local Advisai tribes. There’s everything you’ll need for a touch of urban living in the wild, from a swimming pool and a sundowner lounge to an al fresco dining area. An acre of the property is dedicated to a farm which feeds the guests with seasonal vegetables and fresh herbs. The team will book a safari to Nagarhole Tiger Reserve upon request, and on the more lazy days, you can amble through the laws or spend time playing volleyball or indoor games. Doubles from Rs12,000*. – Ria Gupta
Machaan Wilderness Lodge
Situated on a coffee plantation, this safari lodge offers more than a glimpse of Nagarhole’s wildlife. Guests can sample fresh coffee from the land, head out on nocturnal photography tours, and talk plantation walks to learn more about the bean-to-cup process. There is a host of accommodations to choose from–the cabins are built like traditional machans, the cottages sit in the heart of the plantation, and glamping tents offer a taste of the wild in complete seclusion from the rest of the property. Meals here can be enjoyed at The Fig Tree Kitchen with 180-degree views of the forest, or by a barbecue setup or around a bonfire that the team will set up on request. Doubles from Rs10,000* including breakfast and activities such as plantation tours and night photography sessions. – Ria Gupta
Waterwoods Lodge
Claimed to be one of the first resorts in Kabini, this boutique property sits right by the river with all its rooms looking out to the backwaters. Guests can book boat cruises and coracle or kayak rides from here–apart with the popular land safaris. The team is also happy to set up a wildlife documentary at the riverside beach, where you can enjoy a movie night with the waves lapping at your feet. The rooms, a combination of walnut flooring and glass walls, offer a restful break from all the exploration. There’s aircon, wifi and an LED television, along with spaces such as an outdoor deck to soak in the natural beauty. As a board member of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Waterwoods Lodge has been recognised for various efforts in sustainable conservation such as its contribution to installation of solar lighting equipment across eight local schools and solar water pumps in the forest for wildlife to drink water from. Doubles from Rs16,700*. – Ria Gupta
Kabini River Lodge
The erstwhile hunting lodge of Maharaja of Mysore is nestled in the Nagarhole National Park. The rooms are spartan, with no AC or television, but they ensure you make the most of what you went there for. Spend your day in the company of sambar, spotted deer, gaur, wild boar, sloth bear and more. Nagarhole is open year round, and each season brings unique safari opportunities. During the summer, the watering holes dry up and Asiatic elephants congregate on the riverbanks, while winter is a great time for birdwatching. Back at the 54-acre property, there’s a bar, a conference room, and an ayurvedic centre for some rejuvenation. Doubles from Rs 22,000*, inclusive of all meals, jeep safari and forest entry fees. – Shradha Shahani
Red Earth Kabini
Located on a promontory jutting into the beautiful Kabini river, with Nagarhole National Park and Tiger Reserve to the north and Bandipur Tiger Reserve and National Park to the south, is this resort that blends in perfectly with its surroundings. Rustic chic is the theme here—mud cottages made using traditional methods and grass-thatched roofs to keep the living spaces inside cool in the hot summer months, hand-crafted Athangudi tiles at your feet and lush greenery all around, this is the nature break you are dreaming of right now. There is even a bar in a cottage surrounded by a lake. Doubles from Rs18,100* including one meal.
The Serai Kabini
This resort offers a number of activities in nature to keep you entertained. For accommodation, you can pick from the waterfront veranda, waterfront villa and the self-contained residence with a private splash pool. Wildgrass, the restaurant here, offers delicious grub, and you can grab a drink at Outpost, the bar. For a more private affair, ask the hotel to organise a private dinner for two by the pool. Doubles from Rs18,000*.
The Bison Kabini
If you'd like to wake up in the morning and be right in the heart of it all, you can pick the gorgeous waterfront luxury tent here. If you'd like a little bit of air supremacy, the rustic machans with panoramic views are for you. For more privacy, the bush tents, a short distance from the lake, is ideal. And if you don't want to do without any of the creature comforts of home, the suite cottage is where you need to stay. All of the guest spaces are inspired by the lavish safaris of old with four-poster beds, beautiful dimpled leather chairs and couches, wooden floorboards and vintage decorative trunks. The resort also has a more exclusive bit, called The Little Bison, with two gorgeous tented rooms with their own dining space. Doubles from Rs25,500* including all meals.
Kaav Safari Lodge
You can pick from the four rooms at this property, but it's the well-appointed luxury tents that truly capture the magic of this beautiful place. The tents have generously-proportioned beds, a sit-out deck as perfect for your first cup of coffee in the morning as it is for champagne at sundown. In keeping with the vintage grandeur of the rest of the tent, there is a free-standing bathtub that you can luxuriate in while enjoying the view of the forest just outside your tent. While you are here you can ride coracles on the river or go on a boat safari. If you'd like to do Kabini at your own pace, you can also take bike rides through the forest trails around the property. Doubles from Rs23,000*.
Evolve Back Kuruba Safari Lodge
Whether you go with the base level Jacuzzi hut, the pool hut or the stunning pool reserve villa, this gorgeous property right on the river bank is every bit as sumptuous as it looks in photographs. The earth tones of the exteriors of the villas carry on to the inside where the decor is thoughtful and modern with splashes of traditional tribal pattern paintings and furnishing made from sustainable materials. There are a number of dining options here as well but the private candlelight cruise dining experience and the dinner by the Kabini for two are truly special. The hotel also offers daily river and land safaris. Doubles from Rs35,000* including breakfast and dinner.
