Best cruise insurance 2024
In this article
What is cruise insurance?
Best travel insurance policies for cruises, what does cruise insurance cover, more on cruise insurance, how we analyse cruise insurance.
Cruise insurance is a specific type of travel insurance policy that covers accidents, injuries and other potential mishaps that could occur during a cruise holiday.
Bear in mind that the European Health Insurance Card (Ehic) and new Global Health Insurance Card (Ghic) won't cover the cost of a rescue from a cruise ship , so relying on them alone could prove extremely costly.
Here, we reveal the best travel insurers for holidaymakers going on a cruise and explain why standard travel cover may not suffice.
Please note that the information in this article is for information purposes only and does not constitute advice. Please refer to the particular terms and conditions of an insurer before committing to any financial products.

We've listed the travel insurance policies that offer cruise cover either as standard or as an add-on.
They're ranked by policy score, which (unlike the scores in our best travel insurance reviews ) include cover features specifically designed for this type of holiday. Some of these cruise-specific features are shown in our tables.
Table note: The policy score is our assessment of how comprehensive the travel insurance is, including cruise-specific cover areas. See our full methodology below.
Most cruise insurance policies cover the following areas:
Cabin confinement
If you fall ill during your cruise, you may be ordered to stay confined to your cabin to stop your illness spreading.
The cabin-confinement clause in cruise insurance allows you to receive compensation for every 24-hour period that this applies. In our most recent analysis, the median total cover limit was £500.
Unused excursions
Most cruise insurance companies will cover the cost of any prebooked excursions that you're unable to use because you've been confined to your cabin due to illness or injury.
Itinerary change
Sometimes your cruise operator may have to change the itinerary of your trip due to adverse weather or timetable restrictions.
For example, if you signed up to a cruise with eight stops on the itinerary but due to a faulty engine you could only visit six. If a significant proportion of the services on your cruise can't be provided, you should also be entitled to compensation from the cruise operator.
Missed port departure
Missed port departure covers the cost of accommodation and travel expenses if you miss the start of your cruise and you need to catch it at another port. This could be due to a number of reasons, such as:
- Public transport delays
- An accident or breakdown in the vehicle you're travelling in
- An accident or breakdown on a motorway that causes delays
- Strike, industrial action or adverse weather.
Cancellation and curtailment
Cruise holidays can be expensive and are often booked far in advance of the travel date. Cancellation cover allows you to claim back the cost if you need to cancel your trip before you set sail. This includes things such as flights, hotel bookings, and travel to and from airports.
Curtailment covers the cost of your cruise if it's cut short and you have to unexpectedly return home early.
Cruise interruption
Cruise interruption covers the cost of you needing hospital treatment during your cruise. This includes medical bills as well as expenses required for you to rejoin the cruise where possible.
Medical expenses
Medical expenses cover costs that arise due to you falling ill or getting injured during your trip. This includes the cost of medical treatment, procedures and daily hospital room fees where they apply.
Medical expenses also cover the cost of having to fly you back to the UK via air ambulance so that you can be treated. Some policies will also pay for accommodation for your travel companions if you require extensive treatment.
Baggage and belongings
Most cruise insurance policies will cover the cost of your baggage or belongings being lost, stolen or delayed during your trip. The level of cover that you're likely to get may vary depending on your policy, so be sure to check the terms and conditions.
The majority of cruise insurance policies will cover the cost of your travel money being lost or stolen. The sum you're allowed to claim for will vary among insurers, so it's important to make sure you have the right level of cover.
Instead of buying lots of foreign currency, you might be better off with a travel debit card or travel credit card . You'll get a better exchange rate, often there are no fees and you'll be protected against fraud.
Check that you're getting a great deal and search for a new travel insurance policy using the service provided by Confused.com. Get a quote now .
Are cruises covered by regular travel insurance?
If you're planning on taking a cruise, don't assume it'll be covered by your standard travel insurance policy .
Cruises can last months or even longer at sea, but some annual policies cover trips of no longer than 22 days.
Cruise cover also comes with additional features of cover that aren't typical in a standard travel insurance policy.
Cruise insurance is primarily bought as an add-on to a standard travel insurance policy.
Should you take your Ehic or Ghic on a cruise?
Ehic and Ghic are free medical cards that can be used throughout the EU (but no longer Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, in most cases). Both entitle you to treatment in state hospitals at the same price as residents of the country you're visiting.
If you have an Ehic already, it will still be valid until it reaches its expiry date. But now that the UK has left the EU, the Ehic has been replaced by the Ghic , which is almost identical but isn't valid in any non-EU countries.
It's advisable that you take your Ehic or Ghic with you if your itinerary includes stops in any EU countries, as it could allow you to access state healthcare.
Medical facilities on a cruise are usually operated by private, non-state funded, healthcare companies. As a result, your Ehic or Ghic is unlikely to be accepted as a way of getting medical treatment.
You can find out more about how this works in our guide to the Ehic and Ghic .
Does cruise insurance have an age limit?
Like normal travel insurance, cruise cover policies can come with a maximum age for new customers. These limits will vary depending on the insurance company.
Travel insurance premiums tend to be higher for older travellers, as they are seen as higher risk and more likely to make a claim.
Can you get cruise insurance if you have a pre-existing condition?
Similarly to standard travel insurance, most people with pre-existing medical conditions should be able to get cruise insurance.
However, depending on the condition, cover may be more expensive or subject to exclusions.
Find out more about how to get the best cover for in our guide to medical conditions travel insurance .
We analyse cruise insurance as part of our travel insurance reviews. The main difference is the policy score: the policy score you see here includes cruise specific elements, which are usually excluded.
The policy score rates how comprehensive the cover is, so the higher the better.
Claims performance, service and price aren't taken into account, just the levels of cover.
In April 2024, we surveyed 44 travel insurance companies about their levels of cover and analysed 129 of their policies. We rated 66 key elements of each policy.
Initially, we score all of the product elements out of five, reflecting how competitive each provider is in that area compared with other insurers.
Then, based on our assessment of which elements are more or less important for customers choosing and using policies, we adjust the impact that each element has on the overall score. Among the highest-weighted elements are medical expenses cover, cancellation cover and the compulsory excesses on the policy.

What Factors Can Raise Cruise Prices? A Cruise Expert Explains!
This post may contain affiliate links. if you click one, i may earn a commission at no cost to you. as an amazon associate, i earn from qualifying purchases..
One of the leading cruise experts at Iglu Cruise has revealed 5 factors that can have an impact on cruise prices.
Grace Sandwith, the Commercial Director at Iglu (one of the biggest cruise travel agents in the UK) has offered expert insight on the factors that can increase (and decrease) cruise prices, to help guests get the best value possible from their cruise holiday.
1. Destination
Choosing the right destination is essential for finding a cheaper cruise deal, as prices vary significantly by location.
Flexibility in your choice of destination can help reduce costs, with options ranging from Europe and North America to Asia and beyond.
Repositioning sailings, where a ship moves from one region to another for a new season, often offer great deals. These cruises are typically longer and include more sea days, providing an affordable way to visit less common destinations.
“ There are certain destinations such as Canaries which work well during the shoulder seasons and therefore often have great deals. Cruise lines also frequently offer repositioning sailings where ships sail from one destination to another to start their next season. These itineraries are often very interesting and are attractively priced. ” Grace Sandwith
2. Time of booking
Deciding when to book a cruise can impact the price significantly.
Booking well in advance often results in lower prices as operators compete for early customers, and it gives you the best choice of cabins and add-ons.
However, last-minute bookings can also offer great deals if there is still availability. The best strategy depends on demand, the time of year, and the popularity of your chosen destination.
“ Booking in advance often gives you the best price and enables you to get the exact cabin that you would like before the ships fill up. However, there are often great last-minute deals to grab. You’ll be able to get a great price, however, you might need to be more flexible in terms of type and location of your cabin. ” Grace Sandwith
3. Cruise dates
When choosing a time of year for your cruise, consider how prices vary with the season. Cruises run year-round, but costs fluctuate significantly.
Summer cruises to popular destinations like the Mediterranean are in high demand due to better weather and school holidays, making them more expensive.
For a more budget-friendly option, consider sailing in early or late summer when demand is lower.
“ Often the most popular months are the summer months, particularly for sailings departing from the UK or Europe, hence to get the best price and availability it would be best to book early. There will, however, always be last-minute deals to be had throughout the year. In addition, the shoulder seasons (the time just before and after peak summer season) of spring and autumn are often a great time to secure deals. ” Grace Sandwith
4. Flight times
Flight timing can significantly impact your travel costs. Daytime and weekend flights are typically more expensive due to higher demand.
To save money, look for flights early in the morning or late at night during the week.
While flying from your nearest airport is convenient, it may not offer the best price. Being flexible and considering airports further away could result in cheaper flights.
“ It is always worth considering other airports that may not necessarily be the closest to home, it is also usually a money saver to look at options to fly indirectly. As a general rule for flights, booking early is the best way to secure the strongest fare. ” Grace Sandwith
5. Packages
Many people hesitate to book add-ons or package deals for cruises, fearing high costs. However, pre-booking packages can actually save money.
Common add-ons include drinks packages, WiFi, and gratuities, and while some cruises include these in the fare, others offer them as optional extras.
These inclusive packages are popular because they eliminate the need for extra spending during the trip, making them a convenient choice for both first-time cruisers and experienced travellers.
“ Where cruise lines offer extras that can be booked and paid for in advance, this is a great way to save money as often things like drinks, WIFI and gratuities are more expensive when booked onboard. ” Grace Sandwith
