Terrible telephone manners. Small operation is hard to reach, doesn't call back. Our Italy Tuscany tour was a forced march. Any so-called free time wasn't. If you thought you could stop to shop forget it. One day was particularly crazy. We spent 4.25+ hours on the bus, 6 trips! We saw the same scenery over and over again without any commentary from the tour "guide." The same attractions without constant back tracking could have been done with only 2 hours on the bus. That time could have given us time to see more, shop and even sit on a beach! It was very clear that no one at Durgan had any idea of the geography. We will not be using Durgan in the future.

Worst tour company that I have ever traveled with. Almost died in Italy and Durgan was no help to myself or my children home in America. My children had to contact the Italian Consulate to get help because Durgan was of no help to them. When I returned home in Oct 2018, I cancelled a future trip for Italy in May of 2019 with Durgan because of my horrible experience. When I spoke to the representative she told me they were going to charge me the $25,00 cancellation fee. I asked her why after the experience I had just come home from. Sick on the entire 10 day trip, getting e-Coli and almost dying. Returning to Boston to go straight to the hospital and being admitted immediately. I was dehydrated and in total kidney failure. I was told that she asked the owner and the owner said none of that mattered and I should still be charged for canceling my upcoming trip even though it was 9 months down the road. Durgan never tried to help me or my family while I was in Italy. My children could not get any help from Durgan and had to turn to the Italian Consulate for help. God help anyone that gets sick on a Durgan Trip because they won't help anyone. And yes, this was the first time ever that I did not take travel insurance......so does this mean that Durgan should let me almost die in my hotel room and not help my family on how to get me home. I am lucky to be alive because of two nice couples on the trip that took care of me.

You say the packages are sold with free time so you can eat and see what you want.Thats what my niece and I. wanted to do .But the tour guide Bruno insisted on selling private lunch packages when we didn't want to participate we were basically punished.We sat outside a winery while everyone ate when we went in to sit rather than sit on a log in parking lot we were told we couldn't even purchase a desert or coffee while waited as the dinners were order just for the people participating. While the tour guides ate like kings we drove an hour out of our way just to go here leaving me with only enough time for an espresso and cannoli when we got to San Giacomo Spent 30 min at our destination because of private lunch I was so disappointed with your people and tour when I complained the tour guide told me to call Mr Duggan with a laugh if you have his number is love to call him Jim O

We're sorry about your concerns regarding lunches but that particular package is intentionally sold without lunches so that the travelers can enjoy some free time each day. Ideally people use the time for whatever dining preferences they prefer (most grab something quick so they can use more of the time for individual sightseeing or shopping, others might prefer a more formal meal with the understanding that they won't have much free time beyond that). Our suggestion would be that travelers grab something quick (and, likely, inexpensive) and maximize the amount of free time given in a city or town. Our apologies if the guide suggested something expensive, but that would have been optional and you still had the freedom to choose a less expensive route. Some of our tours do even include lunches, when we feel that it doesn't cut into free time. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss lunch options with you on any of our tours if you would consider a future trip with us.

The grand tour of Italy wasn't too happy with the up sell the first night there.We we're offered a lunch package by tour guide for 169 euros when we declined the next day I was told we would be dropped off some place for lunch I wasn't sat in parking lot with niece waiting for everyone to finish lunch in the middle of no where we drove a half an hour past our stop and a half in hour back to San Giacomo when we got there it was twenty minutes up hill to town 10 min down leaving us with a half an hour there had just enough time for a pastry and no lunch.Was dropped off at Pompeii while tour went to lunch and waited 45 min after agreed time with niece to be picked up only to be told we we're at destination.Hotel in Rome Cardinal St Peter was horrible the whole tours dinner was ice cold this was pork in some kind of sauce staff didn't speak good English very disappointing and to make matters worse no Durgan tour representative just tour guides who up sold your lunches so they got free lunches if you chose the free time like I did to eat on your own choose what you wanted you were basically punished never again I wondered why the price was great now i know also the day in Venice was a four hour bus ride each way along with the up sold lunch didn't leave much time to see or do anything Jim 0

Just returned from a group tour from Barcelona to Southern France. In Avignon France, for dinner we were taken to a Campground recreational room- literally- Not a restaurant- for a non-optional meal (unidentifiable fish and 4 gross-looking escargot on a stale bun). I would have gone and bought my own meal, but we were not near anyplace to eat. Then we were taken to a "Hotel" 30 minutes outside Avignon. It was not even a motel- it was worse than a hostel. Dirty, mold on the curtains and the air conditioning filters. Buttons were broken and we needed an employee to turn it on- but no cool air could come out. The rooms were no bigger than a tiny cruise ship room. Cots in the rooms are on wheels, no elevator, no safe, no WiFi- and no staff after 11pm. When I asked to speak kindly to the tour guide, and said I was concerned about the quality- she just glared at me and refused to engage with me. She looked tired of all the complaints since the meal & now this place. My friend is asthmatic and was coughing and wheezing so bad she almost ran out of her inhaler. We had to leave- the place was disgusting. The guides retired before the group could settle in. People were furious. A dozen people walked to 2 motels that we could see from down the street- they had no room. We logged-on to the App. Expedia- found a hotel downtown and took a cab there. Though these things can happen on a trip, what made this trip intolerable was the way were treated by the guides when we rejoined the trip. They were openly rude and hostile at times. Back on the bus one of the guides was talking openly about us- to the others passengers. Ten rows ahead of me everyone on the bus could hear her say "...they bring negative energy to the group and- probably don't belong in the group". She actually turned around in her seat and started arguing with people. The other guide avoided us totally and never once had a conversation with us. In Cannes, we were at a tourist spot. There were hundreds of people looking at Celebrity handprints. She asked my friend why she didn't go up and look, she answered kindly that she would pass. We were otherwise enjoying ourselves- and this guide barks back "WELL 36 OTHER PEOPLE WANT TO SEE IT! " and she walked-off looking angry. There we 38 people on the trip (we were 37 & 38 I guess). The incivility was mortifying. Earlier I had called Annette Kent, President of Durgin travel -after we were at the campground. She was unapologetic and blamed the tour company they contract with- said she said that have to do an investigation. She never called me back. After I got home, I wrote a letter and forwarded my hotel receipt for a refund. My friend did the same got an email she sent- it implied we purposely got a 5 Star hotel and asserted there was a lesser priced motel across the street that had rooms. Unfortunately- we already knew it was full because we went there. All tolled the nightly difference was about $30 between the facility they booked for us and the least expensive Hotel in downtown Avignon. An "I'm sorry about that" from anybody- any employee, guide, secretary- or President and my complaint would have stopped there. Instead they implied we were dishonest malcontents who intentionally wanted to stay at 5 star (real) hotel- how dare we? One of the guides responded to my request for a refund with an eleven paragraph email. It looked like therapy- it countered everything I said- then left me with a set of "questions for me to ask myself". Unbelievable. We paid almost $3000 to put up with this abuse for seven days (for that amount of money I can go to Hawaii twice). Wish I looked at YELP before I gave them my money. It was a miserable trip- poor quality for the money, incivility is free...could not wait for it to be over.

We couldn't apologize more for this horrible hotel experience. In fact we did apologize- the owner apologized directly to the customer, we wrote to everyone, we obtained a written apology from the local operator in France, who admitted it was their fault, and we refunded each traveler $200. Obviously we never want to have anything like this happen- and in 50 years of doing this, it almost never has- but when it does, all you can do is take responsibility, ensure it doesn't happen again, and, if possible, provide some sort of restitution. Others in the group were pleasantly shocked to receive so much back.

Booked a trip to southern France. It was about 50-50 as far as the trip went. Some of it was very good and some of it was very bad. What made this all the worse was the poor customer service that was received regarding the poor commendations. As someone Who is very educated regarding customer service, a poor experience can be buffered by a good company. Trust me good customer service was not what we received. Although we received a modest monetary refund at the end I will never forget the treatment we received from this company and would never again put myself in their hands.

Started on 10/24/2017 This review is inform future travel clients about our experience with Durgan Travel. We booked a 16 day vacation to Italy from October 4th-19th. We were 3 couples celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. This was to be a trip of a life time. We meet with Debbie Ames one of the professional travel agents employed by Durgan Travel Service. We had our travel destinations well planned before we meet with Debbie. Each day was well planned and organized. Flights were fine all transportation drivers were there as planned. For the most part our hotel accommodations were what we expected! But, now is the kicker! We were to spent 3 nights in Palermo, when we arrived at the hotel at 9:30 Italy time 3;30 eastern standard time that's when thing went bad. The hotel was going through extensive renovations, there was scaffolding covering the entire front of the hotel. When we check in we all had an uneasy feeling. Then it got worse, we were assigned rooms on different floors. When the bellboy opened the door the smell of urine was over powering. the rooms were dirty, sheets stained, rugs not cleaned, air conditioning not working, mold in the bathrooms. When we complaint to our travel agent Debbie she called the front desk, and also informed us that she was leaving for the day at 5:00. Just imagine your in another country and the travel professional is leaving you out there to make arrangements at 11:00 at night! We had no other alternative but to stay the night. The management moved us to another floor, which was somewhat more tolerable, but our wife's sleep on top of the bed afraid of bugs. WE made arrangements to check into another hotel the next morning as where Debbie was unavailable due to she was leaving for the day. We informed our travel agent to credit us the entire (3) nights. We just got word today (7) day later that only 2 nights would be credited, I beside myself I'm in business and strive to make my clients pleased with our company service. Durgan travel should refund the 3 nights that would be the right thing to do. I would suggest to potential clients to have a professional travel agent who you can trust and cares about the individual traveler, in case of an emergency. I wouldn't use this company again, beware!!

We deeply regret how this trip went for the travelers, as we were all let down by the hotel. Debbie and the clients had come to agree on a hotel that had received great reviews on Trip Advisor. However the hotel put the clients in an un-renovated part of their property. Debbie, however, while having to physically leave our office at 5, returned home with the trip information and did work from home on resolving the issue. So while the hotel situation was both lamentable and an anomaly for us, any perception that there was a lack of support or a lack of caring on our part is incorrect. Also, it is important to note that the travelers were indeed refunded for all three nights. The refund had to come directly from the vendor, who initially was only going to only refund the two unused nights. Debbie fought for them to have the third night refunded, and was ultimately successful. It's disappointing that this result isn't reflected in the complaint above.

I had the pleasure of working with Christina at Durgan Travel. She was very responsive and found perfect flights and hotels for our special anniversary trip. This was not an easy trip to plan as we were visiting Bali, Singapore, Hanoi and Bangkok. Christina found great deals and hotels which perfectly met our criteria.
