‘One for the good guys’: Shane Lowry wins the BMW PGA to cap a wild week at Wentworth

On the strength of a Sunday 65, Shane Lowry won the DP World Tour's flagship event — his first victory since the 2019 Open Championship.

Things were anything but ordinary this week at the BMW PGA Championship.

Lawsuits, barbs in the press, and geopolitics all had moments of topicality throughout the week at Wentworth, but on Sunday, the golf finally took center stage. And when the dust settled, Shane Lowry stood as the lone man atop the leaderboard.

“I’m so happy,” Lowry said. “I’m the happiest man in the world right now.”

Lowry’s sentiments were earnest and simple. It had been over three years since the Irishman had laid his hands on a trophy, and the drought was wearing on his psyche. But in a superb Sunday 65, Lowry quelled the negativity that crept into his head and bested a field of top players for a one-stroke victory.

Lee Westwood

Getting to Lowry’s moment of jubilation wasn’t quite so simple, though.

The inclusion of LIV golfers in the field started the week on a tense note. Before a shot was even struck at Wentworth, the storylines were spicy. A lawsuit in the UK allowed for LIV golfers to gain entry into the field, and those who’ve remained loyal to the DP World Tour were not so happy to see their old pals — Lowry included.

“There are certain guys that I just can’t stand being here, if I’m being honest,” Lowry said. “I don’t like it that they’re here. To be honest, the one thing that has really annoyed me over the last few months is how disruptive they’re all trying to be. I get that they’re here to get world ranking points and do that, but in a way I think they’re here for that and to be disruptive.”

This is as passionate and erudite as I’ve ever heard Shane be on golf’s ongoing soap opera. pic.twitter.com/9skSmXYNi4 — Jamie Weir (@jamiecweir) September 7, 2022

Lowry was hardly the only loyalist to express his annoyance with the LIV golfers playing the BMW. Billy Horschel delivered an impassioned monologue calling the defectors “hypocrites” for showing up at Wentworth, while Jon Rahm called out LIV golfers for exploiting the DP World Tour for world ranking points. Rory McIlroy used his time with the press to poke fun at the LIV golfers in the field.

“I’ll be trying to win a golf tournament regardless,” he said. “They are going to be pretty tired on Sunday; it will be the fourth day.”

On Thursday, play finally commenced — and things only got more strange.

As play neared completion during the opening round, tragedy struck the UK when it was announced that Queen Elizabeth II had died at the age of 96. The loss of the monarch reverberated throughout the country, and golf quickly became an afterthought.

Out of respect for the fallen leader, officials elected to suspend play at Wentworth. The stoppage lasted through Friday as flags were lowered to half-mast and the country mourned the death of the Queen.

“She truly was an inspiration to people the world over,” the DP World Tour said in a statement. “Our deepest sympathies and condolences are with the Royal Family at this time.”

Although the shock of the Queen’s passing was still fresh in the minds of many associated with the tournament, officials decided to press on with their flagship event, albeit with a truncated, 54-hole format. Players returned to Wentworth Saturday morning.

Round 2 was dominated by Scandinavians as Søren Kjeldsen and Viktor Hovland rocketed to the top of the leaderboard. But it would be another crop of European stars that became the storyline on Sunday.

Lowry and McIlroy began the day within striking distance of the lead, but Rahm inserted himself into the conversation with a spirited back-nine charge. Thanks to five birdies and two eagles over his final nine holes, Rahm posted at 16-under to claim the clubhouse lead.

“I remember Alex Noren did it to me one year — the year he won, he went out early and shot 62,” Lowry said. “That came into my head … I just tried my best.”

On this day, Lowry’s best was just good enough. With an eagle and five birdies — including at the par-5 18th hole — the Irishman posted at 17-under. And when McIlroy’s final eagle putt slid past the hole on the 18th green some 15 minutes later, Lowry finally claimed the crown.

The circumstances surrounding the tournament made it all the more sweet.

“I made no secrets how I felt about this whole thing at the start of the week,” Lowry said. “I wanted to go out and win this tournament for myself first and foremost. But also for this tour and everyone who’s stayed loyal to this tour. I really feel like this is one for the good guys.”

Rory mcilroy's rise, min woo lee's visit to buckingham palace and more from saturday's second round at bmw pga championship, share this article.

The DP World Tour’s 2022 BMW PGA Championship resumed early Saturday morning at Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England. The tournament was reduced to 54 holes on Friday following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The first round was completed early Saturday, then the second round wrapped up in the evening. The tournament will conclude Sunday, meaning the third round will be the final round. The cut was 4 under, with 72 players earning Sunday tee times.

Here’s a look at five takeaways from the second round, including Rory McIlroy’s rise up the leaderboard and Min Woo Lee’s incredible round that may have been sparked by a visit to Buckingham Palace.

Viktor Hovland is looking for another victory.

Hovland, who co-led after the first 18 holes, is also in the lead at 12 under following the second round, tied with Soren Kjeldsen heading to Sunday. Hovland shot a 4-under 68 on Saturday, Kjeldsen shot an 8-under 64 to vault up the leaderboard.

Thomas Detry is in third at 11 under with Rory McIlroy and Rafa Cabrera Bello. They all shot 7 under on Saturday.

Viktor Hovland admits he was a bit starstruck on his first visit to the BMW PGA Championship but now he feels ready to get the job done after playing the first two rounds in 12 under par. #BMWPGA | #RolexSeries — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) September 10, 2022

Rory comin?

Guess who’s lurking near the top of another leaderboard? Yup, Rory McIlroy.

He fired a 7-under 65 on Saturday during his second round and moved to within a shot of the lead at 11 under, and he played brilliantly. He recorded five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole.

McIlroy won his last start two weeks ago at the Tour Championship, and he’s in the middle of playing three times in four weeks in Europe . A strong Sunday could give him yet another big victory.

Queen Elizabeth II’s death has sent shockwaves throughout the world, and it has hit close to home at Wentworth.

At 9:50 a.m. local time (4:50 a.m. ET), there was a two-minute moment of silence across the grounds in respect to Queen Elizabeth II. Black ribbons have been available for players to wear during competition and flags will fly at half-staff for the remainder of the tournament.

Min Woo Lee had the best round in the field Saturday, carding a 10-under 62 that included two eagles to move to 6 under. He improved his score by 14 shots from Thursday in the first round to Saturday.

And there may be a reason why.

He and a few others went to Buckingham Palace on Friday to pay respects to the Queen.

Not all LIV golfers who started the week at Wentworth are still in the field , but Talor Gooch is again near the top of the leaderboard.

He shot 8 under in the second round and sits two shots back of the lead at 10 under for the tournament. Gooch finished sixth at LIV Golf Boston and held at least a share of the lead following each of the first two rounds.

He’s tied for sixth along with Shane Lowry, Francesco Molinari, Matthew Jordan and Adrian Otaegui, another LIV golfer who birdied his last hole to get to 10 under, as well. Otaegui shot 7 under during Saturday’s round.

Former LIV Golfer Laurie Canter wins maiden DP World Tour title at European Open

Laurie Canter, DP World Tour

Laurie Canter has finally broken through.

At 34 years old, Canter, who hails from Bath, England, won the Porsche European Open, marking his first victory on the DP World Tour .

Canter separated himself from a packed leaderboard on the back nine, as four players sat in a tie for the lead as the contenders made the turn. But every other player stumbled down the stretch at Green Eagle Golf Course in Hamburg, Germany, while Canter remained steady. Canter made birdies at the 11th, 15th, and 16th holes—all par-5s, which gave him a three-shot cushion going into the final two holes.

He dropped a shot at 17, missing an 8-footer for par, but it did not matter. Canter finished at 13-under, winning by two strokes over Austrian Bernd Wiesberger and South African Thriston Lawrence.

“Tried not to get caught up in the tournament. I just tried to keep it as matter-of-fact as possible,” Canter said on the DP World Tour broadcast after.

Laurie Canter, DP World Tour, European Open

“It went my way today, unlike the last thousand times. Probably now that I have done it, I look back at when I didn't do it, and I think it wasn't so much what I was doing, but what others were doing.”

It is a career-defining moment for the Englishman, who has played all over the world since turning professional in 2011. He has spent time on the Asian Tour, European Tour, LIV Golf , and numerous mini-tours.

But before Sunday, he had only won one pro victory, which came on an English mini-tour in 2015.

And yet, Canter, who has found himself ranked within the top 100 of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) at points during his career, has finally won after coming close so many times before. His best finish on the DP World Tour was a runner-up finish to Billy Horschel at the 2021 BMW PGA Championship.

Since then, Canter decided to try LIV Golf, but could not land on a team. He then lost in the LIV Golf Promotions event last Fall, losing out on an opportunity to compete on the Saudi-backed circuit in 2024.

That came a few months after Canter tied for 17th at the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

But now he is a champion on the DP World Tour, something 13 years in the making.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
