Learn how to download books from the O'Reilly Learning platform with your paid subscription.

How to download books (ePub format) from the O'Reilly Learning platform (safari books)

I'm always looking new material to learn from, just like those +800 courses on my Udemy account, that maybe I will never finish ... but that's another story, I'd like to do the same with the famous books of Programming that you can find on the O'Reilly platform (I mean, reading them, not simply storing them).

You can access the O'Reilly Platform as an individual for $49 USD/month or $499/year. For sure, if you think that spending $49 dollars a month won't hurt you, it's recommendable to pay the subscribtion on the platform, considering the prices of buying every single book that you're interested on and assuming that you will read them, the fee that you pay for the online platform is really small and quite fair. However, as someone that lives in a third-world country (Colombia), $49 bucks right now are almost a quarter (1/4) of the minimum wage here in Colombia, so you know, I'd rather eat (now consider how expensive would it be to buy physical or digital books of similar prices). I would only be able to pay that for a couple of months, not the whole year, just as many other people of my country (and of course I'm not talking only about Colombia).

That's why I want to share with you, two useful methods to access most of the content that you can obtain while paying a single subscription of a month.

Important note: I'm not promoting something illegal though, do not get me wrong, to follow this tutorial you will need obligatorily:

  • An active O'Rilley Learning subscription of at least a month (you will invest $49 USD if you don't have a subscription already). In my case, I have a subscription thanks to my University, so I'm paying for it indirectly.
  • The books will be downloaded in the .epub format, so you need an EPub reader software installed on your computer. I use the Icecream Ebook Reader.

A. Using a Browser Extension (My O'Reilly Downloader) [Easier to use, for regular users]

My O'Reilly Downloader is a web browser extension available for Google Chrome and an add-on for Firefox that allows you to download with a simple click any book from the O'Reilly platform in .epub format with a single click. This option is the go-to if you don't have programming knowledge, it is quite straightforward, install the extension and click on a single button to obtain the book.

All you need to do is to install the extension in your browser, once you install it through the official store, search for any book that you want to download on the O'Reilly platform. Once you have it, on the right menu of the page of the book, you will find a tiny O'Reilly icon with a green icon over it (get ebook):

Download Button O'Reilly

Just press it and wait until the extension prepares the EPub of the selected book. Once it processes all of the batches, a message that states that the "ePub download has been completed" will appear and the download will be triggered in your browser ( book.epub ):

O'Reilly EPub Download

You can open and read the file with any regular EBook reader.

B. Using a Docker container [For programmers]

Now if you're into programming just like me, there's a way to do this through the command line to automatize this project with code if you want to. There's an useful project namely O'Reilly Downloader whose code can be found at GitHub here, and it's basically a CLI tool that wraps the Safaribooks project on Docker.

You will need Docker installed in your computer to do it this way.

B.1. Accessing with your credentials

Downloading a book using this approach is quite easy, you only need to run the following command replacing the following parameters:

  • <id of the book> : the ID of the book that you want to download. For example if the URL of the book is https://learning.oreilly.com/library/view/magento-2/9781788298025/, the id would be 9781788298025 .
  • <email> and <password> : use your own credentials to log in to O'Reilly's Platform.
  • <BookName.epub> :  define the name of the output file.

The command with some real parameters would look like this:

Wait until the command finishes and you will have the file of the book.

B.2. Accessing through a SSO Login

If your O'Reilly account, just like in my case, doesn't have a password itself but it uses SSO (Single Sign On) because I get access through my University account, then you need to follow some extra steps to get it working. The first thing you need to do is to log in to the platform with your account, then go to your Profile (https://learning.oreilly.com/profile/).

In this page, we need to obtain the cookie of the browser in JSON format. The easiest way to do this is running the following script that will extract the cookie in the required format and will copy it into your clipboard. To run it press F12 in your browser, go to the console tab and paste the following code:

This will automatically copy the cookie in JSON format to your clipboard, now you need to paste its content in a new JSON file. Create the cookies.json file in your computer, paste the content that you have in the clipboard and save changes.

Note: you have do this everytime you want to download a book because the cookie needs to be updated with your current session.

Then, simply run the following command replacing:

  • <path/to/cookies.json> : the absolute or relative path to the cookies.json file created previously.

And that's it:

Download O'Reilly Book Docker CLI

Final thoughts

In my case, I started downloading 2 books Java: A Beginner's Guide, Eighth Edition 8th Edition, Kindle Edition , and Official Google Cloud Certified Associate Cloud Engineer Study Guide 1st Edition, Kindle Edition , both digital versions cost USD $47.48 on Amazon. so if you pay a monthly subscription, you already won:

Ebook Reader O'Reilly

I downloaded as well other books that I think i'll be reading soon due to my current job. Don't forget that the goal of having access to this kind of book, is to acquire knowledge that will allow you to earn money to pay for this kind of content, for sure buying the content directly from their creators is the best way to do it and support them, but until you can do that, this trick will help you to get on track.

Troubleshooting, how to download pdf files from safari on mac.

Safari for Mac

Wondering how to download and save PDF files from Safari to a Mac? If you frequently encounter and work with PDF documents on the web, you might be interested in saving them locally to your Mac from time to time. With Safari, it’s easy to open, save, and download PDF files to the Mac.

The process is quite simple as this tutorial will demonstrate through several different ways to download PDF files to save them to the Mac from Safari.

You may have noticed that default Safari will automatically open PDF files that are clicked into in-browser windows. That can confuse some users at first, but it ends up being OK because if we’re looking to save a PDF file that makes it very easy to do as you’ll see.

How to Download & Save PDF Files from Safari to Mac

Opening PDF files in Safari on the Mac allows them to be easily downloaded and saved to the computer, here’s how the process works:

  • Open Safari on the Mac if you haven’t done so yet
  • Go to the PDF file in Safari that you want to save to the Mac
  • With the PDF file open in Safari, pull down the “File” menu and choose “Save As”

How to save and download a PDF file from Safari to Mac

  • Name the PDF file and select the destination to download the PDF file to and then click “Save” to download and save the PDF file locally to the Mac at that destination

Saving and downloading a PDF file from Safari to Mac

In the example image here, we’re downloading a PDF document of a study (https://www.gwern.net/docs/longevity/2019-decabo.pdf) and saving it locally to the Mac desktop where it can be easily found.

How to Download PDF Files from a Link in Safari

If you want to download a linked PDF file in Safari to the Mac, that works the same as downloading any other linked item in Safari on the Mac:

  • Right-click on the PDF file link and choose “Download Linked File As”

Download linked PDF file from Safari on Mac

  • Save the PDF file to the Mac destination as desired

You can use either method to download and save PDF files to the Mac.

How to Download & Save Linked PDF Files in Safari with Option Key

Another neat download trick for Safari that is lesser known is to hold down the OPTION key and then click the link to the PDF, or refresh the current URL if the PDF page is already open in Safari .

That will also download the PDF document directly into the Downloads folder as configured by Safari.

Note that saving a PDF file from Safari is completely different from saving a webpage as a PDF in Safari on Mac , the latter of which actually preserves the webpage as a PDF file and also saves it locally. It’s a bit redundant, but you can technically use that same save-as-pdf approach to an existing PDF too, which may be helpful in some situations if the PDF file you are trying to save is stuck in an iFrame or something similar that prevents easy access to opening, downloading, and saving the file directly.

And yet another neat trick; if you happen to forget where you got a particular PDF from but you want to know the source URL, you can retrieve a files original direct download URL using this Safari trick .

How to Make Safari Download PDF Files Instead of Opening Them

The download tips above will allow you to download PDF files from Safari, but you may still end up opening the PDF file in Safari too. If you want to download PDF instead of opening, you can try the following tricks:

Another option to download a PDF instead of opening it within Safari is this:

  • Load the PDF into Safari and then click URL bar
  • Hold down the OPTION / ALT key
  • Hit return (or refresh the PDF on display) to download the PDF

This will instantly download the PDF file to your Downloads folder, unless you changed the download destination in Safari.

Remember that Safari defaults to using the User Downloads folder on the Mac, but you can change the Safari download location if needed to suit your preferences.

These methods work on practically all versions of Safari for basically all versions of MacOS and Mac OS X, so it shouldn’t matter what software release you are on you will be able to open, download, and save PDF files to the Mac locally if needed.

An even easier GUI way to view and save PDFs in Safari: Many PDFs when clicked on will open in a separate Window or Tab. Hover cursor near the bottom and a small tool bar will appear, showing “Magnifying Glass” icons to Enlarge +, or Shrink – the page, and, two other icons that let you Open in Preview, or, Save to Downloads. (I’d attach a pic if I could!)

When browsing the web, we often come across PDF files. If you’re using Safari you can view such files within the browser itself. But if you want to keep them for later reference, you can also save PDF files from Safari to iPhone, iPad, or Mac. This is different from saving webpages as PDFs which is another handy feature of Safari. Let’s check it out.

Make Safari Download PDF Files Instead of Opening Them

If you want to save PDF from Safari to the Files app on your iPhone, it’s pretty simple. When browsing on Safari on iPhone, if you tap the link to a downloadable file, a dialog box will appear to confirm that you would like to download the file.

Once you tap “Download,” the file will be added to the downloads manager and start downloading. It will continue downloading until the entire file is downloaded, even if you close Safari or leave the webpage.

By default, downloaded files are saved to a ‘Downloads’ folders in iCloud Drive so that you can access them from all your devices. But you can change the default location that files are saved in if you wish.

When you click on a link to a PDF file in Safari on Mac, it will automatically open it. To save the PDF file that you’re viewing, click on the “File” menu at the top of the screen and choose “Save As.”

Click on File and Select Save As in Safari on Mac

In the dialog box that opens, name the PDF file and select the destination where you want to keep the PDF file. Then, click “Save.”

That’s it. Once the file is downloaded, you can view it anytime by opening it from the location where you chose to save it.

How to Download PDF Files from a Link in Safari on Mac

If you want to download a linked PDF file in Safari to the Mac, that works the same as downloading any other linked item in Safari on the Mac:

Right-click on the PDF file link and choose “Download Linked File As”. Then, name the PDF file and save the file to the preferred destination folder.

Download PDF Files from a Link in Safari

A neat download trick for Safari is to  hold down the OPTION key and then click the link to the PDF or refresh the current page if the PDF is already open in Safari.

That will also download the PDF document directly into the preset Downloads folder.

Usually, you will probably end up opening PDF files on Safari when trying to download them. If you want to avoid this and directly save a PDF from Safari on Mac, you can try the following tricks:

  • If it’s a link that is clickable to open the PDF, you can just hold the OPTION/ALT key when clicking the URL to instantly download the PDF to the default download location. This will instantly download the PDF file to your Downloads folder unless you changed the download destination in Safari
  • Another option to download a PDF instead of opening it within Safari is to load the PDF within a tab and then click the URL bar. Hold down the OPTION/ALT key and hit Return (or refresh the PDF on display) to download the PDF

Wrapping Up…

As you can see, it’s a breeze to download and save PDF files on Safari on the iPhone and Mac. You can later access them from your downloads folder even when you’re offline. If you have any questions or thoughts about this, share in the comments section below.

Download items from the web using Safari on Mac

Download music, PDFs , software, and other items by clicking links on webpages.

Important: If a download contains software, an alert appears when you open the item. To be safe, don’t open it if you weren’t expecting a software program or if it’s not from a trusted source.

Open Safari for me

Download an item

Choose Download Linked File. (Some webpage items can’t be downloaded.)

Safari decompresses files such as .zip files after it downloads them.

Note: If you download an item that you previously downloaded, Safari removes the older duplicate so it doesn’t take up space on your Mac. See Optimize storage space .

If you have trouble downloading, try any of the following:

If Safari is still downloading the item, wait for it to finish. You can’t open an item while it’s being downloaded.

Sometimes a download is incomplete because the file was damaged. Try downloading it again.

Make sure you have the app needed to open the file. If you do, the file may have been corrupted during the download. Delete it, then try downloading it again.

See items you downloaded

The button isn’t shown if the downloads list is empty.

Do any of the following:

download pdf from safari books online

Tip: To change where downloaded items are saved on your Mac, choose Safari > Settings, click General, then click the “File download location” pop-up menu and choose a location.

Clear the downloads list: In the downloads list, click Clear. To remove one item, Control-click it, then choose Remove From List.

By default, Safari automatically removes an item after one day. To change when items are automatically removed, choose Safari > Settings, click General, then click the “Remove download list items” pop-up menu and choose an option.

The downloaded file may be a compressed archive or disk image that contains the file you want. If the file is from a trusted site, double-click it to decompress it.

If you downloaded an app and you see a message that the app can’t be opened because it’s from an unidentified developer or wasn’t downloaded from the Mac App Store, you can open the app by overriding security settings .

No, Safari Books only provides download capability for those with consumer licenses, not to institutions with Academic and Library licenses.

safari not downloading pdf's

MacBook Air running Mac OS 10.14.6 and Safari 13.0.1 - I click on a file (e.g. bank statement) to download it, and it starts and then stops. Under the little down pointing arrow in the top right corner of the Safari window, I open it and it shows "0 KB of ? - stopped". Will this be fixed in the next release of Safari? BTW - I have no problem downloading pdf's using Firefox on my MacBook Air computer, so it seems highly likely that it's the Safari browser having the issues.

I have a work around! Yep. I am having the same problem but only on some sites, like: Citi bank and random other sites. I found that after the PFD is loaded (visible ) in Safari do this: From the menu: File > Export as PDF. Boom it Downloads to my Download folder.

I am not sure what the problem is since I disabled all the blocking tools in Safari and that helped on a few of the other sites I was having issues with. Well I hope this helps. I am going to post this message on some other threads I saw with the same issue.

Try setting up another admin user account in System Preferences/Users & Groups to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

The definitive guide to Project 2025

Media Matters presents a close look at Project 2025, from a secretive 180-day plan to a MAGA staffing database to extreme proposals that would turn back the clock on a whole host of issues

Written by Media Matters Staff

Research contributions from Madeline Peltz , John Knefel , Jacina Hollins-Borges , Jack Wheatley , Sophie Lawton , Justin Horowitz , Allison Fisher & Olivia Little

Published 08/08/24 10:36 AM EDT

Project 2025 is an extreme right-wing initiative organized by The Heritage Foundation to provide policy and personnel to the next Republican presidential administration. The effort involves more than 100 partner organizations, a database of potential MAGA staffers, a secret 180-day plan, and its nearly 900-page policy book — Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise — represents a major threat to democracy. The below PDF is also available here .

The definitive guide to Pro... by Media Matters for America

New Media Matters research into Project 2025’s extremist goals

Proposals in the Mandate for Leadership would severely inhibit the federal government’s protections for reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, labor and civil rights, and immigrants, as well as its climate change efforts. They would allow Trump to weaponize the justice system as his own personal retribution machine, gut the American system of checks and balances and purge the federal bureaucracy of experienced civil servants who haven’t pledged fealty to Trump. On their own platforms, Project 2025 partners frequently speak in even more draconian terms.

Here’s a sampling of the agenda that the Heritage Foundation and Project 2025 are pushing to implement on day one of a second Trump administration:

  • Reimplementing “Schedule F,” a Trump-era executive order that removes civil service protection for career bureaucrats so they can be fired and replaced with far-right loyalists.
  • Adopting an extreme anti-choice agenda that would restrict legal abortion drugs and emergency contraception, and that could also impact fertility-related health care like IVF and surrogacy services.
  • Undermining checks and balances in the federal government and consolidating the president’s power to weaponize the Department of Justice and law enforcement against his political enemies.
  • Institutionalizing the right-wing movement’s war on LGBTQ communities by promoting conversion therapy and stripping queer people of federal protections.
  • Eviscerating labor rights, including union negotiating rights and protections for overtime pay.
  • Allowing high-income earners to more easily cheat the IRS.
  • Rejecting climate science in favor of Big Oil’s preferred policies by gutting federal agencies that protect the environment and dismantling regulations allowing polluting industries to extract even more oil and gas from federal lands with less protections.
  • Potentially conducting mass deportations of millions of immigrants or those suspected to be immigrants, in part by revoking all Temporary Protected Status designations, which would put more than 863,000 people at risk.
  • Overhauling the American education system by eliminating the Department of Education and making student loans more expensive.
  • Purging the federal government of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Expelling transgender service members from the military and eliminating DEI initiatives from the military to “restore standards of lethality and excellence.”

Key Media Matters research on Project 2025

Media Matters has also recently published thorough research on Project 2025 and the MAGA media universe, including:

  • An exhaustive analysis of Project 2025’s multi-pronged attacks on reproductive rights.
  • A resource guide that outlines the specific policy and personnel priorities of Project 2025.
  • A guide to the MAGA media universe.
  • Deep-dive research on what leading MAGA figures expect from a second Trump term.

Did you know

  • Trivia The casting of Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni as Lily and Ryle caused backlash from fans because in the book Lily is 23 and Ryle is 30, while Lively is 35 and Baldoni is 39. Author of the book Colleen Hoover explained in an interview that she wanted to age the characters up in the movie in an effort to correct a mistake she made in the book. She said, "Back when I wrote It Ends With Us, the new adult [genre] was very popular. You were writing college-age characters. That's what I was contracted to do. I made Lily very young. I didn't know that neurosurgeons went to school for 50 years. There's not a 20-something neurosurgeon. As I started making this movie, I'm like, 'We need to age them out, because I messed up.' So, that's my fault."
