The expert guide for visiting chinatown nyc.

Chinatown, NYC is its own destination. A great place for bargain shopping, food, history, and the chance to soak in Chinese immigrant culture. It’s a fantastic NYC neighborhood . Nevertheless, it can also be confusing and chaotic to the first-time visitor, which is why we’ve written this handy guide to exploring Chinatown.

Note that New York City has several Chinatowns, including communities in Flushing, Queens and Sunset Park, Brooklyn. While we’ll explore those communities in other posts, this is a tour of New York’s oldest and best-known Chinatown in lower Manhattan .

Chinatown NYC street during daytime

Table of Contents

Chinatown NYC’s history

In the 1870s, Chinese immigrants, fleeing persecution while toiling in the American West, began arriving in New York City. A small Chinese community took root on Mott Street. Thanks to outside bigotry and the cultural divide, the immigrant community was fairly separate from the rest of New York.

In the ensuing decades, tales of opium dens, prostitution, and murders between warring Tongs led to the notion of Chinatown being a dangerous, mysterious quarter. In the early 20th century, New Yorkers in search of the “exotic” began to visit the neighborhood (particularly its restaurants). Tourism had arrived in Chinatown.

In 1965, discriminatory U.S. immigration policies against Asian countries were amended. Chinese immigrants began flooding into New York City. The main Chinatown NYC expanded into Little Italy and the Lower East Side, becoming home to several Asian cultures, as well as to Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and hipster New Yorkers.

What to see in Chinatown NYC

To get to Chinatown, take the N, Q, or R subway to Canal Street (at Broadway), or the 6 to Canal Street (at Lafayette Street). If you just arrived to New York, make sure to check our NYC Subway 101 .

Before exploring Chinatown, you may want to visit MOCA , the Museum of Chinese in America , at 215 Centre Street (located one and a half blocks north of the subway stop).

The museum features exhibits on the history of Chinese immigration to the U.S., artifacts from old Chinatown, a recreation of an old Chinatown general store, and rotating exhibits on aspects of current Chinese American culture.

Once you’ve gotten a sense of Chinatown NYC’s history, it’s time to explore the neighborhood on foot.

Man walking in Chinatown NYC

Do some shopping on Canal Street

Begin by heading east on teeming Canal Street , where you can find narrow shops and stalls selling T-shirts, scarves, jewelry, and knock-off luxury handbags, perfumes, and watches.

If you’re looking for the high-end designer fakes like Coach, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, or Rolex, you may be lured into a tiny back room—like at Phoenix Mall ( 246-250 Canal St., between Lafayette and Centre Streets ), which is a warren of micro shops.

Shops selling clothes and luxury brands in Chinatown NYC

Grab a map at Chinatown Information Kiosk

Continue east on Canal until it intersects with Baxter and Walker Streets. There you’ll find the bright red Explore Chinatown Information Kiosk , which distributes maps, brochures, information, and has a handy neighborhood map on its sidewall.

There are many small restaurants and food shops selling fresh fish and seafood (including live lobsters and crabs). Along the sidewalks are food carts offering fruits and vegetables. You can find many fruits, including dragon fruit, lychee, longan, ginger, bok choy, bean sprouts and bamboo shoots.

Explore Mulberry Street’s wide array of nicknacks

Take a right on Mulberry Street, where you’ll pass several stores selling imported gifts of jade, pottery, tea ware, an array of Buddhas, and miscellaneous nicknacks. For a great and inexpensive snack, head to Tasty Dumpling (42 Mulberry) .

A few doors down, look for Fook on Sing (44 Mulberry) , part of Chinatown’s Funeral Row. The tiny store sells cardboard designer handbags, sports cars, flat screen TVs, mansions (complete with paper maids and security guards), plastic bottles of Cognac, even stacks of cash.

The items, symbolic gifts for the deceased, are burned in traditional Chinese funeral practices.

Explore Columbus Park and surroundings

At Bayard Street, you’ll come to Columbus Park , named for the famous explorer—and a sign that, yes, this was once an Italian immigrant community ( make sure to visit NYC’s italian neighborhoods too! ).

Columbus Park was created in 1897, when the decrepit tenements of Mulberry Bend (described by Jacob Riis as a “vast human pigsty”) were razed. The park is the town square for the community. It hosts local ensembles performing Chinese opera and traditional music, sports on its southern field, and old-timers gathered for intense games of Chinese Chess and poker. In the pavilion, folks practice Tai Chi and meditate.

Ahead at Worth Street once stood the hub of the infamous Five Points , the most dangerous slum in NYC history. Most know it as the seedy setting inspiring the film “Gangs of New York.”

Mott Street, the foundation of Chinatown NYC

Turn left and ascend tiny Mosco Street (one of lower Manhattan’s few remaining hills) to Mott Street , where Chinatown was founded in the 1870s. This block was the site of the first Chinese general store , restaurant, Chinese-owned building, as well as home of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Society.

On the corner (to your left) is the Church of the Transfiguration , one of the city’s oldest churches. Since 1801, it has served immigrant communities including the Irish, Italian, and currently the Chinese, with services conducted in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.

Heading south, you’ll pass the new Chinatown Community Center (7-9 Mott St.). This was once the famed Port Arthur Restaurant . Founded in 1897, it was the first spot to draw New Yorkers and tourists with its exotic décor and cuisine. It served “Chinese” delicacies like chop suey, chow mein, and egg foo yung.

Port Arthur Restaurant, Chinatown, NYC

An intersection of cultures and gastronomies

At the corner, you’ll come to Bowery/Worth Street. The large intersection here is Chatham Square , once a grand marketplace and sordid entertainment center. On the pedestrian island stands the Kim Lau Arch , a memorial to Chinese Americans who fought for the U.S. in WWII.

Just behind the island is Dim Sum Go Go , known for excellent, inexpensive dim sum, and the Trans World Buddhist Association , an information center and place of worship.

The wide street heading east is East Broadway . It’s the main drag of the newest extension of Chinatown, populated by recent Fujianese immigrants . Wandering East Broadway and the three blocks to its south you’ll encounter a thriving, authentic Chinese immigrant enclave.

Eating Dim Sum with chopsticks

Doyers Street and the Chinese Theater

Back on Bowery, head one block north to Doyers Street , the crooked lane that turns at a 90-degree angle. Legend has it that Chinese merchants designed its curve to keep straight-flying ghosts from traversing.

The green brick building at 5-7 Doyers was the Chinese Theater (1893-1913), where Chinese opera and music were performed, while its upper floors were a flophouse packed with cheap sleeping cubicles.

Under this building is a fascinating remnant of old Chinatown: a tunnel leading to the Bowery . Left over from the 18th century Doyers Distillery, which once stood where the concrete post office is today, it’s said the Tongs would sometimes use this tunnel to evade the police.

In fact, there were so many violent battles and murders here, Doyers was called the “Bloody Angle.” Today, you can find small offices for (ironically) law and enforcement, in the tunnel, as well as acupuncture, Chinese medical science, dentistry, a tiny shop for Chinese herbs, and Tin Sun metaphysics, famed masters of Feng Shui.

At 13 Doyers Street, you’ll find Nom Wah Tea Parlor , the oldest extant tea parlor/dim sum palace in Chinatown. There are several barbershops lining the street (fancy a hair cut?) that are holdovers from the era when Chinatown was a “Bachelor Society.” Laws prohibited immigrants from bringing their wives and children from China.

Chinese Barbershop in New York

Pell Street, the quintessential Chinatown NYC postcard

Doyers Street ends at Pell Street , another of the original locales of historic Chinatown. With its profusion of Chinese-character signs, it’s no surprise that postcards of quintessential Chinatown often are taken on Pell.

Turning right, you may find a crowd waiting outside Joe’s Shangha i , popular for its soup dumplings.

The red brick building on the corner of Bowery is the Edward Mooney House ( 18 Bowery Building ), the oldest house in New York. Built in 1785, the building has been a home, tavern, hotel, pool hall, social club, restaurant, and now a local bank.

Pell Street, Chinatown, NYC

Chinatown Ice Cream Factory

Take a left on the Bowery. At Bayard Street, take a detour to 65 Bayard for the renowned Chinatown Ice Cream Factory , serving homemade ice cream in distinct flavors like green tea, almond cookie, lychee, black sesame, red bean, and taro.

When you reach Bowery and Canal , you’ll find a large intersection leading to the monumental entrance of the Manhattan Bridge.

Chinatown Ice Cream Factory Cone in NYC

Mahayana Buddhist Temple

Beside the entrance, to the northeast, sits the Mahayana Buddhist Temple , a peaceful oasis amidst otherwise chaotic streets. Inside, the walls are lined with paper strips bearing prayers and names of the deceased, along with offerings of flowers, fruit, incense and snacks. You’ll see an enormous golden seated Buddha and, to the right, a huge temple bell, right at the head of the main sanctuary.

This is an active place of worship, so it’s important to behave with discretion and respect. Be sure to buy a scroll with your fortune, or head upstairs to the gift shop for some excellent bargains.

Mahayana Buddhist Temple

End the tour trying out everything you can at Canal Street food carts

Return to Canal Street and head west for the five blocks back to the subway.

Hungry? There are plenty of great restaurants on Elizabeth and Mott Streets, and the Canal Street food carts serve steamed, grilled, and fried Chinese specialties.

You will find below all you need to know about Chinatown, one of the best destinations for sightseeing tours in New York City .

How do I get to Chinatown ?

You will find the largest concentration of Chinese people in the western hemisphere on the island of Manhattan . Chinatown is part of Lower Manhattan and is bordered by Little Italy , Tribeca, the Civic Center and the Lower East Side.

Grand street station is the best subway station for Chinatown, and you can get there on the B and D trains. Several city buses  also pass through the neighborhood, with the M9, M15, and M103 routes being the most popular. You can also reach Chinatown from Brooklyn if you cross the Manhattan Bridge or walk a few blocks from the exit of the Brooklyn Bridge .

What are the highlights in Chinatown?

Eat your way through chinatown.

Indulging in Chinese cuisine is one of the biggest reasons people flock to Chinatown. Whether you want to slurp up some hand-pulled noodles or eat your bodyweight in dim sum, Chinatown is the place for culinary celebration.

Restaurants serving crispy Peking duck or spicy Szechuan dishes spill out onto the streets, and visitors can also experiment with other Asian foods. Pho from Vietnam, Nasi Lemak from Malaysia, Ramen from Japan, Chinatown has it all! Top it all off with a scoop from the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, and you have a winning menu.

Visit the Mahayana Buddhist temple

chinatown nyc travel agency

Pay a visit to the oldest Buddhist temple on America’s east coast. The temple is open all week, and on weekends you will find thousands of Buddhists worshipping at the temple. You can admire the massive 16-foot golden Buddha statue, which also happens to be the largest one in the city.

Inside you will also see elaborate printing works that depict the life of Buddha, and there are many spaces where visitors can pay tribute to their deceased relatives.

Stroll Down Doyer Street

This street has quite a grim reputation and is also known as The Bloody Angle. It is only around 200 yards long, but this L-shaped alley is one of the bloodiest in American history. More than a century ago, it was the site of ongoing gang violence and turf wars, but today it is a far cry from its violent past.

Stroll down Doyer Street and learn about the intriguing history of the neighborhood. The street is increasingly photogenic, with charming angles and a vibrant atmosphere. In the summer, it is a pedestrian street, and visitors can walk around the once bloody corner to now be met with some of the most popular eateries in the neighborhood.

What are the most popular Chinatown tours?

Chinatown, little italy and soho walking tour.

chinatown nyc travel agency

A walking tour of Chinatown, Little Italy and SoHo will take you on a journey through three of New York’s most beloved neighborhoods. From trendy streets to traditional eateries, these neighboring boroughs are a must-see on any New York visit. SoHo is known for its upscale feel and cast-iron buildings creating a classic Big Apple façade.

From there, you will venture into traditional neighborhoods with large immigrant populations. Hear stories about how these diasporas came to be and see how cultures across the globe have curated these unique and beloved corners of the city.

Chinatown and Little Italy food tour

Food tour is the main attraction of Chinatown and Little Italy, so why not combine that with a fascinating walking tour? Venture into the streets of both these boroughs and learn about the intriguing history that has unfolded here over the centuries.

Along the way, you will savor various delicious traditional treats like dumplings, cheese, cakes and pizza. Your expert local guide can take you to all the hidden treasures, including scenic photography spots and restaurants that have been operating for more than a century.

Chinatown photography tour

Get behind the lens and capture the sights and colors of Chinatown. Venture into the street art with a professional photographer and guide to capture the vibrant essence of the area.

You will see hawkers with mountains of fruit, gritty graffiti, immigrant-era building, street musicians, and remnants of the industrialization of New York. These elements are all gold to street photographers and you will enjoy a masterclass on capturing these features.

How much do tours in Chinatown cost?

chinatown nyc travel agency

Walking tours of NYC's Chinatown include visits to Little Italy and SoHo. These tours run between US$40 and US$50 per person, with more expensive tours having smaller group sizes. Private tours of Chinatown and surrounding areas are around US$80.

A food tour of Chinatown and Little Italy costs around US$70 and includes a selection of delectable snacks and dishes along the way. The more expensive food tour of Chinatown is US$125 per person, but it also includes alcoholic beverages, which most other tours do not.

You can also book a private group food tour for US$250, and up to 10 people can join the group rate does not include the price of food.

A photo safari in Chinatown costs US$140 per person, and the groups are very small. You will have the help of a professional photographer at your side, showing you the ropes of street photography.

Where do Chinatown tours in New York City start?

Most of the SoHo, Chinatown, Little Italy combo tours start from Spring Street Park in SoHo. Some also start in Duarte Park, while a select few start in random locations like East Houston Street and Kimlau park.

One food tour of Chinatown leaves from the African Burial Ground National Monument on the edge of the neighborhood, while others leave from Mulberry Street and Baxter Street in the heart of Little Italy. The food tours all start in different places according to the dishes they offer.

Photo safaris of Chinatown start from Straus Square on the corner of East Broadway and Rutgers Street.

When should I visit Chinatown in NYC?

Chinatown is a vibrant area all day, and you can’t go wrong with a daytime tour. After 6 PM. some of the more traditional places close, so try and visit during the daytime. Avoid Sundays, as it’s a regular schedule for their waste disposal, and it can be unsightly.

  • Come hungry if you are doing a food tour of Chinatown. You will want to feast on everything that comes your way.
  • Have your camera ready because this is an ultra-photogenic neighborhood with many interesting corners.

I've used Focus a couple of times from NY-Philly due to necessity. The positives: buses run often and usually on time, Chargers on bus generally work, relatively cheap at $20 round trip, can book easily online at goto bus site, and convenient drop off locations for me (essentially both Chinatowns) The negatives are the buses are dirty, the people on the bus are rude and loud, and drives are at times are dangerous (I usually sit in the front and watch the driver). Bring your headphones because the people on the bus are loud and unruly. Generally avoid but if you have no other alternative at this cost, go with focus.

chinatown nyc travel agency

What's not to love? For $35, you can get a round trip pass from NY (pickup in Chinatown or midtown) to DC (Chinatown). You can order your tickets online by searching "gotobus" but let me tell you... you'll save $2 if you buy your ticket in person. Tickets are "open" here if you buy them in person. That means you look at the time you want to ride the bus and you arrive 30 minutes earlier than your desired departure time. When your bus is here, there will be someone inside announcing it (i.e. 2:30 to DC). When you're lined up to board, the driver/manager will collect your ticket. If you purchased your ticket online, you HAVE to give that printout of purchase to the people manning the ticket windows. There, you'll get a handwritten piece of paper with your time on it; that's your "ticket". I would probably avoid any afternoon-early evening departures because getting out of the city can be quite torturous! Imagine taking 2 hours just to get out of the city...on a Friday (they'll pick up at Chinatown and drive local to midtown for the second pickup). Pro tips: 1) bring a usb+portable charger- sometimes, the bus's USB port won't work 2) sit near the front and not the back- the bathroom smell from the back will creep forward 3) board in Chinatown because you get first dibs on seats! 4) buy tickets in person and you'll save $

chinatown nyc travel agency

We bought 6 tickets from DC to NY (130$US), the bus never came and the company didn't want to refund us. Terrible company

When I ride any sort of bus, I should not have to worry if I am in safe hands or not. Normally bus rides via Focus Travel Agency are without incident but two days ago, I experienced a bus ride that has shaken my confidence in riding with this company until further notice. Upon arriving in NYC from Philly, I was not given enough time to retrieve my luggage by the Driver, Luis (not sure of spelling). He was belligerent with me when I could nor easily locate my luggage in the bus' outer luggage compartment. I apologized to him repeatedly when he nearly hit me on the back of the head when he grabbed the luggage compartment door and slammed it shut. I did make a complaint to the company's front desk staff and they were clearly very disturbed by my description of the incident. They told me they would speak with Luis and would contact me with any updates, and as such I must commend the office staff for the attention to my complaint. However, I do not feel safe riding with Focus Travel Agency so long as Luis remains employed here, let alone allowed to operate a bus anywhere. I hope Focus' management will discipline him appropriately as I do not want to cease doing business with a bus company that has treated me well for so long.

You get what you pay for with Focus travel. They have one of the cheapest tickets for NY to PHL so don't expect much. I haven't had any bad customer service experiences with Focus yet. Gets me from point A to point B efficiently and I go to Philadelphia every week. The schedule says the buses come every hour but sometimes they come late because of traffic and estimated time arrivals may differ due to that as well as the stopping to pump gas and the occasional riders that need to get off at Cherry Hill Mall or Exit 4. I must say that, you must BEWARE if you do decide to ride with Focus. The customers are EXTREMELY RUDE, especially the ones that think that because you're speaking English to them, they're entitled to ignore you. Multiple times I had to wait for the bus driver to explain to these passengers that they have to give up a seat if a bus is full. One older Asian lady spit on me because I waited for her to move her stuff. She didn't think I knew Chinese and was messaging on her phone how she needed to look busy so that I would find another seat. Then she proceeded to elbow me the entire ride. When we arrived in Philadelphia, she tried to push me into the aisle with her bag and then again down the stairs getting off the bus. There was one time the bus broke down but the bus driver tried his best to keep the crowd down as it was late in the night and people had places to be. I think they dealt with the situation fairly quickly because a bus arrived about an hour later ( we were halfway to Philadelphia).

Ehhh...girl behind counter was rude as hell. But $10 for tickets to philly for a bus that arrived only 15 minutes late...can't complain too much. Seats were a bit more cramped than the eastern bus line but still bearable for a 3 hour ride (if you're 5'7 and under). Not really sure what else to write about. PS: don't forget to get your tickets stamped at the window if you ordered online.

Best bus in town! And I've used 3 different Chinatown bus services (they are not all created equal), as well as bolt and megabus traveling between Philadelphia and NYC. I even rode the now defunct Fungwah bus back in the day.... Don't get all the Chinatown bus companies confused, they are independently operated and distinctly different. I found this out after HG bus refused to let me on the purple bus from hell because I had a Focus ticket apparently (yeah I thought all asian bus companies looked alike back then). Focus travel via Gotobus.com is by far the best one. The office in NYC is on 120 E Broadway, go in here to get a ticket. If you are using the Gotobus.com app to purchase online, also check in at the ticket window to get a ticket!!! I didn't do this, they were understanding but do yourself a favor don't make the same mistake as me. You'll pay a little more than the other Chinatown bus companies $12 each way, nyc-Philly, but generally less than mega and bolt. TIP: If you book online round trip, you get a $4 discount. What you get: - 5 stars. Safe bus ride - 5 stars. bilingual ticketing agent on the bus, they are very reasonable and nice - 4 stars. pretty nice fellow bus riders - 5 stars. door to door service between Chinatowns - 4 stars. clean updated bus - 5 stars. USB chargers at each seat that work - 5 stars. bus is on time - 3 stars. smelliness really depends on customers, ranges from great to slightly funky What you won't get - 3 stars. Orderliness with boarding the bus. Passengers crowd the bus before it's fully deboarded and cut in line. Not as bad as the other Chinatown bus though, but not as organized as bolt and mega. Arrive early to get a good seat. Overall, 5 stars for value and safety. For the price and availability (I book last minute a lot, and prices stay the same) you can't beat it. I love this bus!

Pay more for a better quality service!!!! I rode with this agency for two trips. Both equally as bad. I travelled From NY to DC and back. I am riding the bus as we speak. I'll try to keep it short. 1. It SMELLED!!! First and foremost, the buses were not swept or cleaned after each arrival. So we wouldn't know how long certain foods or trash have been left on the floor. The buses, literally, smelled like S!#%. It's as if they had toilet problems but decided not to clean or do a maintenance check. Ever. 2. The buses were old and decrepit. The buses really were falling apart. You can hear the frame shake & hear the metal parts rumble. Every time we hit a bump in the road, the frame would shake. The first bus I rode, the AC didn't blow cold air and died mid travel. The second bus, I had the driver ask for someone to help her nail a piece of the bus frame together because it was scrapping against the street. 3. It's not worth what you pay for. I understand if it's an hour or two travel. Maybe you can put up with the flaws but if you're travelling for 5 hours. It's not worth the headache. 4. In general, Cheap tickets attract a certain clientele. In one bus ride had a drunk girl pass out in the front, had a guy who cussed out the bus driver coz he was driving "too slow", and some creepy guy look at me and touch himself forcing me to move. I did report him. Although, REMEMBER, it's the luck of the draw. Not all experiences will be like mine. 5. If you're getting dropped off at Baltimore, MD. Be prepared to get dropped off at the back of some random building. In the dark. In an isolated area. There is no station or center. I did not have direct Customers service experience with them, so I can't directly comment. Although, judging by the quality of service they are providing, I wouldn't be too confident. My final advice: purchase at your own risk.

Reliable. Excellent for the price you paid. If you want more amenities and services, go somewhere else and pay more. This is no the bus company that you want. My experience was good from ny Chinatown to philadelphia. For those who complained, please keep in mind what you paid and what is the cost of doing business in NYC. Bus is not clean and you will not have high class bus mates. But if you want to go from one place to another at a cheaper price, this is the bus to go with.

Up at 4:45am writing this review. Why? Because I'm trapped in a window seat by a 500 pound woman sitting next to me. Taking up half my seat. Her weight crushing against mine, ruining any chance I have of getting the slightest amount of sleep. Not only is my sleep ruined, but I've had to switch positions multiple times throughout the night to accommodate my seat partner's many "interesting" sleep positions. It ranges from forcing me to sit on the edge of my seat to leaning against the window to prevent being crushed by this large woman. Now, I understand this isn't the bus company's fault. However, what irritates me is that there are three OPEN seats in the front row taken by the bus's manager. Yes, all FOUR front row seats are taken by one person, the bus manager. He is gracefully sleeping, with his legs stretched out across the aisle, taking up all four seats in one row. When I wake him up and sit down, the conversation proceeds as follows: *bus manager wakes up* Bus Manager: Yo bro, what you think you doing? Me: Sorry, there seems to be a rather large woman sitting next to me. Bus Manager: So what? Get back in your seat. Me: I'm unable to sleep because of her. She's taking up half my seat, and constantly waking me up when she accidentally touches me. Bus Manager: Yeah and? You think you better than everyone else? No one else is sitting in the front row. Me: No but you see... Bus Manager: I don't care. Get back in your seat. No, I don't think I'm better than everyone else, but you certainly do, princess, sleeping gracefully with your body stretched across four seats. And I'm not the only one to get into an argument with him. He has threatened to kick other customers off the bus for minor things. Worst customer service for any bus company I've ever travelled with. Foot rest broken, USB ports are only on every other row rather than every row unlike most bus companies (assuming they want to cut costs in half installing them), no working Wi-Fi, no TV.
