Kayaking the Broughton Archipelago - Northern Waters

broughton archipelago kayak tours

The many islands of the Northern Broughton are perfect for sheltered and open water paddling.

Open water distances are  frequented by summer boaters during the months of June through September. The Northern Broughton makes up the largest portion of BC’s largest marine park established in 1992. Distance of this crossing is usually 15-17 nautical miles. Given the weather cooperates we prefer to transit an area where the Humpback Whale population localizes in the open waters of QCS. Remember we stop for whales. The bulk of the islands and islets are made up of basalt rock shorelines with small calm shelled or rugged rocky beaches. We drop paddlers off at a number of different locations with an eye out for rising tides. Our drop-off destinations are used for ease of access and protection for the boat.

Beach surfaces in the Northern Portion of the Broughton are not user friendly so arriving at raising tides is an advantage. Quite often beaches are facing the sun. Some beach destinations are heavily used by kayakers, locals and sailors therefore leaving the campsite as found is important.

The Burdwood Islands, the Fox Group and the Bonwick Group of islands are popular destinations with mariners and paddlers. Select island locations have been utilized by First Nations for generations and visiting their sites is best done with a call to their band office in Alert Bay before hand. Camping spot are at a premiere most of the summer. First Nations have asked that we avoid the use of Insect Island effective in the summer of 2016.

Echo Bay is the hub of the area with Bill Proctors Museum being a must visit.  Camping is available on the grass area above the tide line. Smaller bays and shorelines are populated with year round inhabitants in the region. Wildlife is in evidence amongst these passages in small numbers and prefers to stay out of sight until sunshine shows up. Boaters and kayakers use the same waterways thus a CAUTION is always advised for those of us in sea kayaks.

Wildlife is seen in few numbers along the passages into the Northern Broughton but between the islands of the Benjamin Group and Echo Bay we usually find a resident summer Humpback or two. Venturing out into the waters of Queen Charlotte Sound on a calm morning brings us within the breathing sounds of an increasing number of Humpbacks, Whiteside Dolphins and even Transient Orca.

The extension of the Northern Broughton holds many surprizes for those adventurer who dare to plod beyond Broughton. Fife Sound and the inlets that stretch to the North and East offer many passages, coves and lagoons left to be explored. Often in August when everywhere else on this coastline is fogged in, the areas up the inlet remain in bright sunlight for the entire day(s). Transport into these areas is possible with a early seasons notice given in March – April.

North Island Kayak would like to acknowledge that we operate on the traditional territories of the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw tribes. We are aware that the adventure tourism industry which drives our passion for the outdoors could not happen without the use of the land and water that we camp, paddle and recreate on. North Island Kayak would like to acknowledge that our tours operate on a vast array of areas from what we know today as Telegraph Cove to the Broughton Archipelagos and the many islands between Vancouver Island and the coast of the mainland. The traditional territories we frequent the most include but not limited to; the ʼNa̱mǥis, Kwaguʼł, Mama̱liliḵa̱la, Dzawada̱ʼenux̱w, Ḵwikwa̱sutinux̱, & Ławitʼsis.

To learn more about the traditional peoples and the history of this land you will recreate on while touring with North Island Kayak, we recommend designating time to visit The Village of Alert Bay, and the U’mista Cultural Centre.

British Columbia Sea Kayaking and Whale Watching Tours

Kayak with orcas  in the BEST spot on the planet: Johnstone Strait in British Columbia.  Over 220 fish-eating killer whales congregate in this Vancouver Island Passage each summer to feast on the prolific salmon that are concentrated in the strait. The sheltered waters of Johnstone Strait create ideal conditions for any anxious paddler looking for a sensational British Columbia sea kayaking experience, as these waterways are generally calm, and host phenomenal marine life like dolphins, humpback whales, porpoises, seals, sea lions, sea birds, and a myriad of fascinating tidal animals as well as the famous orcas.

In addition to killer whales and humpbacks , there are miles upon miles of forested shoreline where bald eagles perch and tall trees reach to the sky. In general, the birding on our kayaking tours is spectacular. Sea lions and seals swim in the waterways along with otters and a multitude of seabirds. Along this magical shoreline, we set up our camps beneath towering cedar, spruce and fir trees.

Our camps feature stand-up, walk-in canvas tents, set up with cots for your comfort. The kitchen is set up underneath the trees while logs and stumps nearby make the perfect seats to accompany the kitchen. Temperatures are moderate throughout the summer months and our camps are chosen for their spectacular locations, and perfectly spaced out for each day’s paddling journey.

We offer a variety of trip lengths, from our 4-day orca or 4-day humpback base camp tours, to our 6-day Blackfish Waters tour and 6-day Broughton Archipelago Expedition .

Additionally, we offer an exclusive lodge-based tour at God’s Pocket Resort – We are the only sea kayaking company on Vancouver Island to offer a kayaking tour based at God’s Pocket Resort. Set in an isolated bay in God’s Pocket Provincial Park, the resort features individual cabins, delicious meals, and is the ideal base for daily sea kayak explorations.

British Columbia Sea Kayaking Tours

Blackfish waters.

Our signature  6-day Blackfish Waters kayak tour makes use of our three permanent camp set ups, where our standing-height canvas tents are set up for the duration of the season. Placed on cedar decks, the tents boast spectacular views of the sea. This trip spends one or two nights at the same camp we use for our orca basecamp tour and your chances of seeing both orcas and humpbacks is very good.

For kayakers with prior experience, we also offer a  sea kayaking tour in Broughton Archipelago Marine Park , complete with a water taxi ride deep into the Broughton Archipelago and a 6-day paddle back to Johnstone Strait, BC. On this trip we spend about half our days in whale waters, and the other half weaving among the enchanted islands of the Broughton Archipelago. For two nights we set up camps in remote, undeveloped areas, so this trip has more of an expeditionary nature to it.

Orca Base Camp

If you are more interested in whale watching than kayaking, and/or you just want to kayak a bit less, then our basecamp tours are an excellent choice. We have semi-permanent camps in two locations. Earlier in the season, before the orcas or killer whales have arrived, we offer our 4-day Humpback Basecamp tour located on Swanson Island. This is a beautiful setting and we often view whales swimming, blowing, and even breaching just in front of camp.

From mid-July and onwards, our orca basecamp is the perfect adventure. On this tour our camps are set up just in front of an orca "rubbing area." This is a pebble-bottomed area of the sea where the orcas come to rub their bellies and sides, making our camp a fantastic place to whale watch. The water is quite clear, and it’s a real thrill when the orcas come by camp.

God's Pocket Resort

For those who prefer warm beds and real showers, our all-inclusive lodge-based trip  at God's Pocket Resort  is just a bit further north in BC inside God's Pocket Provincial Marine Park (rated by Jacques Cousteau as THE best cold water SCUBA dive spot in the world). Our God's Pocket Resort trip is designed for those who wish to experience diverse wildlife, marine mammals and kayaking without having to camp. This 6-day trip spends nights at the remote, tranquil resort and each day we head out for paddles and walks among the islands of the archipelago. Sea Kayak Adventures in British Columbia operates exclusive use of the lodge for our mid-summer kayak tours.

Day Paddles from Paddlers Inn:

Some of the best kayaking in the world can be found in the Broughton Archipelago. The islands, bays, inlets, and passages provide a variety of paddling options. Whether you are a seasoned kayaker or just starting out, there are a variety of paddling options.

Below are some of the day trips you can take from the Paddlers Inn.

Viner Sound

Paddling east, along the Gilford Island shoreline, paddlers are likely to see black bears feeding at low tide on the beach.  Once at the head of the sound, you will find a nice grass delta, and riverside trail, with salmon heading up-river in the fall. The return trip is about 18 km / 4 hrs. Easy paddling. Could be a bit rough paddling back to  the lodge if it blows NW in the afternoon.

Burdwood Islands – Updated information:

Paddling north from the lodge and across Hornet Passage, there is a lovely group of islands with one of the nicest beaches in the area. This area has recently been closed to all camping, and the main beach area is CLOSED even for day use. Still a spectacular place to visit, with most of it available for day use enjoyment.  Lots of seals, and sometimes whales, dolphins, and porpoise. The return trip is about 13 km / 3hr. Crossing Hornet Pass can be challenging if it’s windy. Experience or a guide is recommended.

Paddling NW from the lodge this route is fairly exposed to wind and waves. After making the crossing, paddling along the Broughton Island shoreline offers a wide expansive view to the north and several quiet bays with beaches and driftwood, piled up from winter storms. Trivett island is beautiful, although Penphrase Passage does have motorboat traffic, as it provides boaters access to the northern shore of Broughton Island. The return trip is about 20km / 5 hrs +. Experience or a guide is recommended.

Benjamin Islands

Paddling west from the lodge and along the north shore of Baker Island this route is quite protected and quiet. The Benjamins offer paddlers several island passages and seldom visited small beaches, as well as a view of Fife Sound which leads out to Queen Charlotte Strait. Possibility of seeing whales, dolphins, and porpoise. The return trip is about 22km / 5 hrs. Easy paddling.

Insect Island

West of our location, paddling along the Baker Island shoreline, and south of the Benjamin Group, there is a narrow passage leading to Insect Island. This site shows evidence of thousands of years of First Nations usage. There are lots of good camping sites here. The return trip is about 22km / 5hrs. Fairly easy paddling. It is possible to return to the lodge, paddling along the south shore, and thus circumnavigating Baker Island.

Fox Islands

Paddling west from the lodge down Cramer Pass leads paddlers to the Fox Islands. There are many tiny islands here, with Waddington Bay being of exceptional beauty. Retreat and Cramer Pass are powerboat routes so some boat traffic is likely. Lots of seals. The return trip is about 22km / 5 hrs. Easy paddling.

Cramer Pass

Cramer Pass is close to the lodge, making it an ideal route for those who are new to paddling, children, and people wanting a shorter paddling day. There are a couple of nice picnicking beaches and a couple of float-house residents along the pass. Possibility of seeing whales, dolphins, and porpoise. The return trip is about 12 km / 3hrs. Easy paddling.

Shoal Harbor

Heading south from the lodge, and past Echo Bay, paddlers wanting a shorter tour can explore Shoal Harbor. This harbor offers protected waters, and so is used by people as a safe place to moor their floathouses. There are a couple of floathouses here, and as well a few derelict ones being reclaimed by the sea. The west end is shallow and quiet. The east end is used by boaters at anchor. The logging camp has been dismantled, but their road system starts here, providing many miles of walking trails. The return trip is about 8 km / 3 hrs. Easy paddling.

Mystery Camps

Throughout the area are many wonderful camping and picnic sites. We do not identify all of these sites, leaving them for the inspired adventurer to locate on their own.

Echo Bay is our communities center, or “downtown” (population 3). There is a marina, store, fuel, post-office etc. here. At the head of the bay is a large midden beach, with a field, and our community hall, which has collopsed, reminding visitors of a time when this community had many residents, who have now pretty much all moved away. At one time there were over 200 people here, now our population is about 10. The return trip is about 2km / 1 hr. Easy paddling.

Billy’s Museum

Bill Proctor is the oldest remaining member of our community, having spent his whole life in the area. He is a wealth of information and support to any and all who have come to know him. Over the years he has collected a museum full of cultural remnants, and I imagine probably has the largest private collection of First Nations artifacts in British Columbia. This is a “must see” for anyone interested in history. The return trip is about 4 km / 2 hrs. Easy paddling.

7 Day Broughton Archipelago Mothership Tour (134.213)

Departing from Port McNeill after boarding at 6 p.m. we'll spend our first night on the Mothership at the historic BC First Nation's coastal village of Alert Bay. Here we'll take an evening walk to the beautiful seaside graveyard totems and the next morning visit the renowned U'mista Cultural Center famous for it's Potlatch Collection. This sets the tone for our coming week in Kwakwaka'wakw territory as we paddle the sparkling mazelike passages amongst islands back- dropped by the snow-capped peaks of the Coast Mountains.

Meals: Dinner

Accomodation: Boat

Heading out into the Broughton Archipelago, we keeping our eyes out for wildlife. When we reach our destination, we will review kayak orientation and safety procedures before setting off for an afternoon paddle. Once on the water we'll keep a sharp lookout for both marine and terrestrial life. Bald eagles overhead, ravens calling, harbour seals swimming close to check us out, black bears foraging on the beach, a humpback whale blowing, Pacific white-sided dolphins playing in the waves, are all common sights from our kayaks in the Broughton. And of course we are always on the lookout for the orca. We carry a hydrophone aboard the boat and can listen to the whale's vocalizations. as well as watching and photographing them Back onboard, we'll have a delicious lunch as we cruise towards the Broughton Archipelago keeping our eyes out for wildlife. When we reach our destination, we will review kayak orientation and safety procedures before setting off for an afternoon paddle.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3-6: Each morning, after a hearty breakfast, we will launch our brightly coloured kayak flotilla and begin our day of exploring the beauty of the Broughton Archipelago. Every day will bring a new array of stunning sights and surprises.

A typical day's paddle begins shortly after a scrumptious breakfast. Once on the water we’ll keep a sharp lookout for wildlife that we are likely to see include, orca, pacific white-sided dolphins, Dall's porpoises, humpback whales, harbour seals, sea-lions, black bears foraging on the beach and the majestic bald eagle perched in a tree. Lunches will be savored on one of the many beaches throughout the archipelago, each with a spectacular view and often on an ancient First Nations village site. Afternoons will be spent paddling, snoozing on a sunny beach or relaxing aboard the ship. Walking in the rainforest, visiting a salmon river estuary, whale watching from the ship.

We're always on the lookout for orca and carry a hydrophone onboard to listen to this mammal's vocalizations.

At lunch we’ll pull our kayaks ashore on a grassy islet or at an ancient First Nation’s village site and relax while we enjoy a delicious meal. The Broughton Archipelago had the highest concentration of First Nation’s peoples on all of the coast due to the richness of the sea and therefore the abundance of food. Shell middens, pictographs, clam digging beaches and burial sites are evident as we paddle through this area. Later in the afternoon we’ll meet the Columbia III in a different bay or cove, never needing to backtrack. A big advantage of mothershipping! There are always two guides with the group, so if some guests are energetic and want more time on the water and others are ready to return to the mothership, we can often accommodate both.

This is our last morning to enjoy the peaceful environment of the Broughton Archipelago. We will choose between a last paddle, or if the orca are in the area, we may spend some time whale watching from the ship as we make our way back to Port McNeill. We will serve a last lunch along the way. Our approximate return time is between 1pm and 3 pm but please note that this cannot always be guaranteed as the weather and wildlife will play a role in determining when we get back.

Travelers head home at the end of their trip feeling rejuvenated by their time spent in nature, meeting great people, kayaking amidst wildlife and sleeping under the stars.

At ROW Sea Kayak Adventures, we select the very best places on Earth to whale watch and sea kayak. And we don’t just watch whales; we join them! Many of our trips are in UNESCO World Heritage Sites and National Marine Parks, providing unparalleled whale and wildlife encounters, and calm paddling waters.

Kayaks are largely non-intrusive to wildlife, which mean you’ll have a rare view of animals that normally scatter at the approach of humans and large boats. In sturdy kayaks you’ll be at eye level with playful dolphins, inquisitive sea lions, and incredible whales.

Whether you are an avid sea kayaker, or it is your first time, you’ll enjoy these incredible trips, and share in our passion for adventure, commitment to conserving the environment, and relishing unique experiences. For those new to the sport, kayaking is easy to learn in the sheltered waters that we visit, and we provide all of the camping gear, kayaking equipment and guidance needed. In addition, we keep our groups small to allow you to not only travel intimately among nature, but to ensure you receive the necessary attention from our guides.

Most of our guides are with us for the long-term, despite the seasonal nature of the industry. Our top-notch equipment, unique itineraries, and perfected operations attract extraordinary guides, many of whom are highly sought after in the industry. ROW Sea Kayak Adventures guides know their outdoor skills as second nature. Each trip has 2-3 guides to assist, inform and lead the way so you get the most out of your adventure. They love to share conversations, knowledge, games and laughter – and they’re great cooks!

We know that it’s our job to provide uncompromising comfort & safety and quality service & gear. We provide all of the gear you need – kayaks, camping gear, etc – teach you necessary skills to perform the various activities, and always have your safety in mind. In addition, our legendary wilderness meals, prepared daily by our guides using fresh, healthy ingredients, include savory dishes like chiles rellenos, baked salmon and vegetable lasagna. We even serve delicious desserts like brownies and pineapple upside-down cake! Each morning, we serve up freshly brewed coffee. Throughout the day we provide an abundance of local fruits and vegetables. Wine and mixed drinks are served with hors d’oeuvres each evening for happy hour. We also accommodate special dietary requests. “Camping Plus” is all about truly “getting away,” but not quite “leaving it all behind!”

While we provide certain creature comforts, we are all about practicing “Leave No Trace” ethics. Respecting not only the wildlife we encounter, but also the environment we visit is of utmost importance. Rest assured you will leave the special places you visit as pristine as you found them.

In 2013, we furthered our conservation and responsible tourism efforts by becoming the first kayak tour operator to join the Responsible Whale Watch Partnership. We represent the organization with just 30 other companies in an effort to raise the standards of whale and dolphin watching worldwide.

We make unique and meaningful trips easier for you by taking care of the details so you can just show up and focus on being totally engaged in your adventure.

Testimonials.

Over the years, we've provided ‘trips of a lifetime’ for countless travellers from around the world. See what our past guests have to say about their experiences with us.

“Trips on the COLUMBIA III have now become a necessity rather than a passing fancy. Thanks to the splendid crew, the wonderful chef and of course, my esteemed Captain Ross. I will rise again and organize another venture!”

–  Paddy  Victoria BC Whole boat charter, 2011, 2015

“We are truly in awe of the experience you shared with us. The attention to detail and the quality of care you show your guests is outstanding. Fern, the food was incredible, kayaking will always bring back memories of the smells coming from your galley and the camaraderie shared at the table. Ross, your love and enthusiasm for the COLUMBIA III and Mothership Adventures always shows in the stories and knowledge you so freely share. Thank you all for one of the best vacations we’ve ever had, along with the opportunity to share a week in your lives. We can’t thank you enough.”

– 2012  Joan and Michael Collins , Publishers, Sea Kayaker Magazine

“Another amazing trip aboard my favorite boat. It’s like taking our home into the middle of a vast, wild, beautiful wilderness, and then getting to quietly be a part of that natural world. A gentle spirit bear, sparring grizzlies, breaching whales and gorgeous paddling water! And then great food, good humor, amazing stories and wonderful friends. Thank you everyone for a unique and fantastic trip.”

–  Mary, Cour D’Alene  Idaho. 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and whole boat charter 2018, and returning in 2022

“So we travel all the way from England with hope and expectation for a great adventure and what did we get? A bl**dy fantastic adventure! The mix of wildlife, including the elusive Spirit Bear, grizzlies, black bears, wolves, sea otters, eagles and all the rest. Plus guides who know everything about everything!!!!! Plus food that was so, so, so, good, never a scrap was left, plus such great friendship and humour from all the guests and crew. Shame about the Skipper, but can’t have everything I suppose! So many thanks to Ross, Luke, Steve and Farlyn for the best time ever. Such great friends.”

Two-Way Water taxi Day Tour to Blackfish Sound & The Broughton Archipelago Marine Park

This two-way water-taxi day trip bring you into the Broughton Archipelago Marine Park, which is part of the newly protected Great Bear Rainforest. The days are longer in June and July and the park at this time of year is starting to see an influx of migratory birds returning up the coast. The bald eagles are plentiful that we often see dozens in the tree-tops from our kayaks.

June and July are peaceful in the Broughton’s for human visitors. The day is spent kayaking through countless islands, exploring ancient First Nation village sites, and trying to find the first humpback whales of the seasons that are starting to arrive from Hawaii or Baja to feed on herring for the summer. Blackfish Sound and the surrounding area is where we will start our tour and can be littered with wildlife ranging from eagles, porpoise, dolphins, sea lions, birds of prey, humpbacks, orcas, and a variety of different invertebrates hiding under the water column. This Day tour is designed to maximize our wildlife encounters in one day by bringing our guest to the first area that comes alive in the early summer with a variety of different species and amazing islands to paddle through.

We use expedition-level equipment: high quality kayaks, paddles, paddling gear, paddling clothing, camping gear

All our guides are highly experienced with the area and have professional training outside of their guiding certifications regarding risk management, hazard analysis, interpretation, and more

Experience the abundant wilderness of the area: porpoises, birds, humpbacks, sea lions… Without a doubt, you’re bound to be speechless throughout your adventure

Overview of our Day Tour

The Blackfish Sound area and Broughton Archipelago Marine Park are made up of high currents, mazes of several small islands, numerous inlets and bays located about 30-minute boat ride from Telegraph Cove. The islands in the marine park are undeveloped and are largely undiscovered. The mostly protected waters of the Broughton’s offer an area that is an excellent place to spend the day exploring the sea by kayak. Most tours that paddle in the Broughton Archipelago Marine park spend on average 3-7 days exploring. Our water taxi ride allows us to enter the park in 30 minutes and allows you to explore the pristine clear and cold waters that are enjoyed by salmon, bears, seals, porpoise, sea stars, sea cucumbers, eagles, dolphins, orcas, and humpback whales. On this Day tour, our guests will enjoy the tranquil beauty of this area as they follow their guide through a myriad of island and islets, stopping at a couple beaches along the way for packed lunch, and to stop and watch wildlife pass them by. There are tons of alien-like marine critters to admire alongside our more familiar birds and mammals. We promise you won’t be disappointed by the sheer number of amazing animals you’ll see — but do your best to let them pass peacefully!

You’ll be well taken care of by our guides — they’ll make sure you’re well-fed, well-rested, and well-entertained… And of course, enjoying nature! So what are you waiting for? Come with us and explore the sea stars, anemones, nudibranchs, and so much more in the Broughton Archipelago Marine Park…

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
