About Royal Portrush
The course enjoyed a redesign in the run up to The Open with 2 new holes being added with the 7th and 8th replacing the 17th and 18th holes to accommodate the huge crowds (190,000 over the tournament) which visited this famous stretch of coastline for another great edition of The Open Championship.
Past Opens at Royal Portrush
The 80th Open Championship was held at Royal Portrush in 1951, the first time it had been held outside Scotland or England. Max Faulkner claimed the Claret Jug that year giving us a British Champion but it took another 18 years for the next one with Tony Jacklin winning at Royal Lytham.
The Dunluce Links then enjoyed one of the finest moments in Northern Ireland and world golf in 2019 with Shane Lowry's near-flawless performance in claiming the Claret Jug. Lowry became the second player from the Republic of Ireland to win a major after Padraig Harrington.

The Open: A Legacy of Legends on the Links
In the realm of sport, few events rival the prestige and enduring spirit of The Open Championship. Born in 1860 on Scotland's revered links, The Open stands as the world's oldest major golf championship and the only one played beyond American shores. Steeped in legend, it has shaped the game for over a century and a half.
The Open's origins lie on the windswept links of Prestwick Golf Club. What began as a single-day contest among eight professionals has become a global stage. Willie Park Sr.'s victory in that first Open earned him the coveted Challenge Belt, later replaced in 1873 by the iconic Claret Jug – one of sport's most treasured trophies.
Each year, The Open unfolds on a storied links course in Scotland, England, or Northern Ireland. From the relentless winds of Royal Birkdale to the devilish bunkers of Carnoustie, each course tests the world's finest with unique trials. These hallowed fairways have witnessed historic clashes: Nicklaus's "Duel in the Sun" against Watson at Turnberry, Clarke's poignant victory in 2011... moments woven into the sport's timeless lore.
Today, The Open draws champions from across the globe, its influence shaping golf's future while honoring its past. Scotland for Golf, rooted in the game's birthplace of St Andrews, takes pride in our role as an authorised R&A ticketing agent. This distinction empowers us to ensure your Open experience is truly unforgettable.
Join us at the 2025 Open Championship. Witness the making of legends and become a part of golf's greatest tradition.
"One word Brilliant 👏, from enquiries to booking both golf and accommodation. Many thanks to Scott, Craig, George & Ryan ( Pro who looked after me for the day ) . From the warm up and out on the course, Ryan was knowledgeable and helpful ,explained everything i needed to know to play a links course . Will take on board his tips and work at them ."
"George hosted a fantastic round of golf around St Andrews. His coaching was pertinent, useful and probably the best player lesson ever. Thank you 😊"
"I'm so glad I signed up with Scotland for Golf while visiting St. Andrews. David, my instructor, was professional, attentive, and an excellent communicator. The facilities at their establishment were top notch. Since coming back home I can already see improvements in my golf game. Highly recommended for locals and tourists alike."

“Any golfer worth his salt has to cross the sea and try to win The Open”
What Makes The Open so Important to Golf?
The Open, the oldest and most prestigious championship, has seen the best golfers in the world compete against the challenge of links golf for more than 150 years. Eight professional players met in Prestwick beginning in 1860 to decide who would be the Champion Golfer.
The Challenge Belt, valued £25 at the time, was to be awarded to the victor. The first presentation of the Claret Jug didn’t occur until 1873. At The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews , the historic Claret Jug is now always on exhibit in the clubhouse.
Royal Liverpool Golf Club
The Amateur Championship and English Amateur Championship were first played at Hoylake, the “spiritual birthplace” of amateur golf. Here, the competition that would eventually become the Walker Cup was first held in 1921.
Two golden pineapples can be found on poles close to the putting green. They represent hospitality and were once found on the entrance gates. From the beginning, the Royal Liverpool Golf Club’s defenses were primarily made up of rushes, cops, and bunkers (pot, strip, and cross). Only the cop who surrounds the practice field may be left of these initial elements that can still be recognized today.
Few people realize how much those powerful breezes have altered relatively recent course designs, despite the fact that many people write about the powerful winds that hammer the links. Since the massive 200-yard bunker along the right side of the first hole was filled in, the fairway’s level has increased to almost a foot above that of the practice area.

*About our FLIGHT NAMES, selected in honor of two great Open champions
MAX FAULKNER FLIGHT
Max Faulkner was an Englishman and famously won The Open Championship in 1951 at Royal Portrush, the only time it was held in Northern Ireland prior to 2019. Faulkner was introduced to golf at a young age by his father, a club professional who had once been an assistant to the legendary James Braid. Whilst Faulkner played in 26 Open Championships, golf was then not the global game it is now, and as a result he never played in any of the other 3 major championships, however he did play in 5 Ryder Cups, including the famous 1957 event at Lindrick, which was Great Britain & Ireland's only victory against the USA between 1933 and 1985.
FRED DALY FLIGHT
Fred Daly was born in Portrush, Northern Ireland and was a regular professional tournament winner in the late 1940's. He is best known for winning the 1947 Open at Royal Liverpool while he was the club professional at Balmoral Golf Club in Belfast. In winning the Open Championship he became the only Irishman to win The Open until Padraig Harrington won it in 2007, and was also the only Northern Ireland major winner until Graeme McDowell won the 2010 US Open.

Golf Schedule
Situated next door to Royal Birkdale, Hillside Golf Club is widely regarded as the best links never to have hosted The Open although it has been a final qualifying site for the event on many occasions. The links weaves through sandhills and tranquil pines to deliver a variety of holes certain to test the best players. The course is well known for its wonderful conditioning and slick greens. The back nine holes are considered among the best in Britain.
A course that provides a formidable test of links golf and fully deserves its recognition as a true venue for The Open since joining the rota in 1954. Each hole runs in valleys between towering sandhills. The problems are clearly stated, if you stray from the fairway the buckthorn and scrub can be demanding. Arnold Palmer won the championship here in 1961 which was a significant step toward attracting top American pros to participate. Tom Watson won the Claret Jug here in 1983. Jordan Spieth won in 2017.
Only the Old Course has hosted The Open more often than Prestwick, the last of 24 played here was in 1925. Eleven of the first twelve Opens were played on Old Tom Morris’ twelve-hole layout beginning in 1860. Six holes were added in 1883. One of the club’s great strengths is variety. There are blind shots. Uphill holes and those that play downhill and sidehill. Greens in hollows and plateau greens. Driveable par fours and those you’ll be delighted to reach in two. Perhaps most famous is “Alps” the 394-yard 17th. The narrow fairway runs straight up a steep sandhill which hides a generous green guarded in front by the notorious “Sahara” bunker framed with revetted sod and railroad ties interrupted only by wooden steps to allow you in and out.

You can’t rush perfection, Turnberry’s Ailsa Course is proof. It was established in 1902, modified in 1906, modified again in 1909, redesigned in 1938 then nearly disappeared after the Second World War when it was converted into an airbase with several holes flattened into concrete runways. It was restored and reopened in 1951 as one of Scotland’s finest links to the extent it hosted The Open for the first time in 1977 when Tom Watson’s 65-65 weekend beat Jack Nicklaus’ 65-66. MacKenzie & Ebert made extensive alterations before The Open in 2009 then Ebert returned for a major update in 2015. The result is spectacular, particularly but by no means limited to holes 9-11 that play across and along the bay atop rock outcrops on the left; dunes, pot bunkers and high fescue on the right. The club’s famous lighthouse includes an incredible two-bedroom suite and one of the most memorable halfway houses in golf.
Those who make their way to the Highlands by way of Aberdeen will not want to miss Cruden Bay. This is an old-fashioned gem of a links with greens and fairways hidden between massive dune, driveable par fours, blind shots and of course gorgeous view of the North Sea. There is evidence that golf started here in the 18th century but it was in 1899 when the original layout by Old Tom Morris and Archie Simpson opened for play at 5,290 yards. The course was redesigned in 1926 which essentially stands today playing with more than an additional 1,000 yards. “Port Erroll”, the 193-yard 4th, played from an elevated tee to an elevated green, will get your attention. Cruden Bay is a regular among the world’s top 100 clubs.

Imagine Dr. Martin Hawtree’s delight, the third generation golf course architect with many achievement to his credit including his service as the R&A’s go-to for modifying Open venues, when he was chosen to design the newest American-inspired golf course in Scotland this century along a spectacular 3-mile stretch of North Sea coastline with almost unlimited resources. Trump International Golf Links may represent his finest hour. The round combines high ground with striking views before descending into secluded valleys between monstrous dunes. There are five tees on every hole, except the two that have seven. There are eighteen fully revetted bunkers on the 18th! It is a sight to behold.
The first record of golf played on this links land dates to 1527. In 1842, a 10-hole course was designed by Alan Robertson followed by an 18-hole course by Old Tom Morris in 1857. James Braid extended the layout in 1926 which is essentially the links found today. While it is relatively flat, Carnoustie is exposed to the elements. A combination of length and accuracy are required as golfers face narrow corridors from the tee while approach shots demand precision to greens heavily guarded by steep bunkers and burns. Arguably the toughest finishing holes in championship golf are found here highlighted by the par-4, 476 yard 14th and the 245 yard par-3 16th. Ben Hogan won The 82nd Open at Carnoustie in 1953. Tom Watson and Gary Player also hoisted the Claret Jug here as has Padraig Harrington and most recently Francesco Molinari in 2018.
Golf dates to a nine-hole layout here in 1793. It was commandeered by the military during the Second World War not to reappear until Kyle Phillips took an interest in the late 1990s. His design ushered in the era of “modern classics” when it opened in 2000 looking like it had been there for years. The terrain is links style perfection with tumbling fairways and sandy soil that produce the fine-bladed fescues which are the cornerstone of fast-and-firm playing surfaces that characterise links golf. The fairways are spacious, the greens are large, exceptional views of the North Sea are found on every hole.
Dumbarnie Links is one of Scotland’s newest links courses opened in 2020. Located 9 miles south of St Andrews, the layout plays over 345 acres, part of the 5,000-acre Balcarres Estate held by Lord Anthony Balniel and his family since the 16th century. Designed by Clive Clark, a member of the 1973 Great Britain and Ireland Ryder Cup team, the site is highlighted by a mile and a half of sea frontage featuring panoramic views over the Firth of Forth. Its dual elevations, which are connected by a flowing escarpment, provide a number of elevated tees where holes play directly towards the sea. The design incorporates three potentially drivable par-4s along with several holes that present tempting risk/reward opportunities. This course is designed to inspire rather than intimidate golfers. Total yardage varies from 5,300 to 6,900 yards.

The King's Course at Gleneagles was the inspiration of James Braid, five-time winner of The Open. It opened in 1919, representing the finest 'classical' golf course design. In 1921 the course hosted the inaugural, albeit informal Ryder Cup between Great Britain and the United States. It is certainly one of the most beautiful places in the world to play golf with. sweeping views of the rock-faced mountains to the north and the green hills to the south, plus the peaks of the Trossachs and Ben Vorlich on the western horizon. The King’s Course has hosted an impressive list of important events ranging from the 100th Scottish PGA Championship to the Curtis Cup and Scottish Open.
