What is a Lions tour?

A British and Irish Lions tour involves a group of players selected from each home nation of England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Selection is based on the form of these players for their country and club and is designed to bring the best players from each nation together to form a 'super team'.

This squad comes together every four years to then travel to either South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, rotating between these three nations. Hence the Lions visit each country once every 12 years.

Each tour comprises 'warm-up' matches again provincial or club sides, before playing three, or historically four, 'Tests' against the national team. Whichever side wins the majority of these matches wins the Test series and thus a Tour is determined a victory or defeat.

The Lions have toured 37 times, winning 15 tours, losing 20 and drawing two, including their last tour in 2017 against New Zealand.

British and Irish Lions will maul Wallabies on 2025 tour

A t this stage, 317 days out from the first Test in Brisbane, it’s difficult to see any other result than a 3-0 series mauling of the Wallabies when the British and Irish Lions tour Australia.

A lot can change in the coming months and the southern hemisphere hosts could suddenly come good, but I have not seen enough from them this year – in their series win against Wales during the summer and their opening three Rugby Championship matches – to imagine them challenging the British and Irish Lions at the moment.

Australia need the Lions’ touring schedule – which will see Andy Farrell’s side take on local Super Rugby clubs and invitational teams – to be absolutely brutal.

They won’t say it out loud but they’ll want the Lions to suffer badly through strain and even injury to weaken the squad as much as possible before the three-Test series.

Out of their three touring destinations, their win percentage is by far the highest against Australia.

Against South Africa they have registered a win rate of just 37 per cent from their 49 matches since 1891 and in New Zealand that plummets to 17 per cent from 41 Tests.

Good fortunes

Against the Wallabies, however, the British and Irish Lions have won 17 of their 23 Tests at a win percentage of 74 per cent.

Granted, they’ve faced the Wallabies less than the Boks or the All Blacks, but their record means the Lions will always fancy themselves against Australia in a way they don’t against the other two.

That said, I do like what their head coach Joe Schmidt is doing at the moment to try and close the gap.

The former Ireland boss has a good coaching team with him in the form of Geoff Parling, Laurie Fisher and others, and he has been testing out combinations and captains in the few games he has been in charge.

They were well beaten by the Springboks in their opening games of the current Rugby Championship and struggled against Argentina. Despite their win over the Pumas, I still think they are the worst of the four sides in the competition.

But Schmidt is starting from a low base. Whether you love or loathe him, former coach Eddie Jones’s sudden departure did nothing for the stability of the Wallabies and it’s on the new Kiwi coach to turn Australia back into a machine that can challenge the Boks and All Blacks.

And Australia have bigger problems to contend with. They’re fighting for players who may otherwise choose rugby league or Aussie Rules and they’re battling for coverage on terrestrial television.

Wallabies will suffer?

In the modern game all of this helps towards pathways, revenue and full stadiums – Australia’s series victory against Wales showed there was work to do on the latter point.

Australia will desperately want to win the Lions series, to upset the odds if nothing else, but their bigger priority is the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which they are hosting.

This is a huge couple of years incoming for Australian rugby and the Wallabies, and it all begins with their hosting of the British and Irish Lions.

It would be one of the great Lions shocks if Australia won the three-Test series. The Lions should be far superior to their hosts under Schmidt’s former assistant Farrell, given the quality of depth across the four participating nations.

Sporting cliches aren’t new to this column either and I expect the Lions to feast on their Wallaby prey next summer.

2024 Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain: stage 3 report and results

Stevie Williams double-up to win a hectic stage 3 of the Tour of Britain Men, Thursday 5 September

' src=

Stevie Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) delivered an impressive back-to-back victory in the third stage of the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain, consolidating his position as the overall leader. The Welsh rider powered to the finish in Barnsley, fending off early stage winner Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) in wet and challenging conditions. His win extends his overall lead to 16 seconds, with British riders dominating the top four positions in the general classification.

Stage 3, a grueling 166km route with 2,282 meters of climbing, began in Sheffield, taking riders through Rotherham, Doncaster, and finishing with an uphill sprint in Barnsley. Yorkshire native Ben Swift (INEOS Grenadiers) initiated the day’s first break, alongside Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) and Jake Stewart (Israel-Premier Tech), quickly gaining an advantage over the peloton on the twisting roads near the Peak District. The group swelled to four with the addition of Jelte Krijnsen (Q36.5 Pro Cycling), but Israel-Premier Tech kept the pressure high, eventually reeling them in after Alaphilippe claimed both King of the Mountain points.

british and irish lions tours results

As the race progressed, several breakaways attempted to disrupt the peloton. A notable move by Tobias Foss (INEOS Grenadiers) led to a 10-man break, including British champion Ethan Hayter (INEOS Grenadiers) and Magnier. Though promising, it was short-lived as Israel-Premier Tech continued to chase aggressively.

With 50km to go, a breakaway group formed, featuring Louis Sutton (Great Britain Cycling Team), Julius Johansen (Sabgal/Anicolour), and Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility), among others. Sutton, sporting a torn jersey after an earlier crash, briefly threatened Williams’ lead. However, the pace from Israel-Premier Tech proved too much as they closed down the gap.

The race came alive in the final 25km as Bahrain Victorious and Israel-Premier Tech pushed the tempo. The breakaway group was finally caught inside the last 6km. A late attack by Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers) up Hound Hill saw him take the King of the Mountain points, but he and Oscar Onley (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) were swiftly pulled back.

In the final kilometre, Williams launched a decisive sprint, holding off Magnier and Edoardo Zambanini (Bahrain Victorious) to take his second win in two days. His victory also secures him the lead in the points classification, while Oscar Onley leads the best young rider classification. Callum Thornley (TRINITY Racing) retains the King of the Mountain jersey, and Louis Sutton was awarded the Combativity prize for his resilience and aggressive riding.

Stage 4, on Friday, September 6, will see the riders take on the East Midlands, covering 138.5km from Derby Arena to Newark-on-Trent.

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.

Only the greatest of touring teams earn their own nickname, but the 1974 Invincibles more than deserved their title.

With two draws and six defeats in Test matches on their last two Tours of South Africa, the Lions faced a daunting challenge.

But fresh from a first-ever series win in New Zealand, this team was full of confidence and achieved something remarkable, going unbeaten for the entire Tour.

Over the course of 22 matches, they won 21, with the only minor blip, a drawn Test in the final match of the series.

A look through the squad list reveals a who’s who of some of the greatest rugby players ever to wear the famous red jersey.

Captained by Willie John McBride, the Lions were also able to call upon the likes of Gareth Edwards, Ian McGeechan (pictured above), Phil Bennett and JPR Williams – the latter two having sadly passed away over the last couple of years.

Up front, Fran Cotton (pictured below), Bobby Windsor and Ian ‘Mighty Mouse’ McLauchlan made up a formidable front row in front of McBride and co.

The touring side laid down a marker in their very first match on South African soil, beating Western Transvaal 59-13 in Potchefstroom.

Six more victories followed before the first Test, including a remarkable 97-0 win over South West Districts with the late JJ Williams scoring a record-equalling six tries in that match.

The Lions overcame muddy conditions in Cape Town to win the first Test 12-3, Bennett kicking three penalties and Edwards (pictured below) adding a drop goal, even if the Lions trailed for the first time on the tour following Dawie Snyman’s drop goal.

A fortnight later, at altitude in Pretoria, the Lions inflicted what was then the largest defeat in Springbok history on the home side, scoring five tries in a 28-9 victory.

JJ Williams scored two of those in the first half, before Bennett, Gordon Brown and Dick Milliken helped the Lions pull away in the second half.

The third Test is probably the most iconic match of the entire Tour. Later dubbed ‘The Battle of Boet Erasmus’, the match in Port Elizabeth was particularly physical, and was where the Lions used the famous ’99 call’, a tactic designed to counter the robust approach of the home side.

The opening 40 minutes of that Test were brutal, but while the Springboks played some of their best rugby of the series, a try from Brown allowed the Lions to go in 7-3 up.

JJ Williams added two more tries in the second half, while Andy Irvine (pictured) took on kicking duties, finishing with eight points, in addition to two Bennett drop goals in a 26-9 win that wrapped up the series.

Three more wins on the Tour made it 21 from 21, with this Lions crop already established as one of the greatest touring sides of all time.

All that remained was a final Test in Johannesburg. Roger Uttley (pictured) and Irvine scored tries for the Lions, with Peter Cronje getting over for the Springboks and Jackie Snyman kicking three penalties.

Fergus Slattery was denied a try late on as the Lions pushed for the win, but they had to settle for a 13-13 draw, capping off a remarkable series.
