Train Ticket Booking 101: Everything To Know for a Smooth Journey

A s more Americans push for increased train and rail service in the United States — especially as California builds high-speed rail — now is the time to get more familiar with the ins and outs of train travel. There are plenty of reasons to hop on a train. Who wouldn’t want to see some of the country’s most scenic routes from a train car window? Although worth the extra effort, train travel differs from booking a flight. Our handy guide has everything you need to enjoy the US on a train route, from booking cheap tickets and navigating amenities and luggage rules to enjoying the most scenic train trips in the country. Read to the end to discover the most unique, picturesque rail trips in the United States!

How to Book Train Tickets in the US

There are several types of passenger trains in the US, and the kind you take depends on where you’re going. Local commuter rail helps passengers get back and forth between their homes and major city hubs, but you shouldn’t let the name deceive you about how far these train routes run. New York City’s Long Island Rail Road is the oldest in the United States, still running under its original company name, and has stops in three states. Chicago’s Metra trains have stops in two states. The easiest way to buy LIRR train tickets is ahead of time via their app. Similarly, the easiest way to buy Metra tickets is via  the Ventra app .

Even though commuter rail is heavily used, you’re probably more familiar with classic, long-distance passenger rail. The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, better  known as Amtrak , is the most recognizable and reliable passenger train service in the United States. Congress established the company through the Rail Passenger Service Act of 1970, and in 2019, it carried more than 32 million customers. Routes are searchable on travel websites like Kayak, which can come in handy when traveling between cities that might also have bus service — but Amtrak’s website is simple to use and less cluttered.

Getting Started with Train Ticket Booking

Start by entering your starting and destination city on the Amtrak homepage, or take a peek at their country-wide rail map to choose a route. There are also a few stops located in Canada. After choosing your stops, you can enter your departure date and number of passengers and search for both coach and upgraded private fares. Depending on the kind of train ticket you purchase and how far your trip is, it’s possible your fare could rival the cost of a flight — but don’t worry, there are several tips we’ll cover below for scoring reduced Amtrak train ticket costs.

Lastly, though, more intercity and shorter passenger rail services are popping up around the country that you might want to take. Brightline, for example, is the only privately owned and operated intercity railroad in the United States — although electric engines have pros and cons . It services Miami, Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach and Orlando. Like Amtrak, Brightline tickets can be purchased online, many for under $50.

Tips for Scoring Cheaper Train Tickets in the US

Many commuter rail systems offer cards that can be re-loaded via the app, and some — like Metra — offer military, student, senior and other discounts. Amtrak tickets, though, can cost a pretty penny. Cross-country trips are beautiful, but you may be worried about the price. Luckily, Amtrak offers a few discounts and a rewards program passengers should take advantage of.

Firstly, be sure to check Amtrak’s deals page. The company runs specials on train tickets and offers seasonal discounts and other promotions that aren’t always available. You’ll need to check regularly to find something that applies to you. There are also regular discounts to take advantage of. Amtrak offers up to 60% off group train tickets, and students save 15% in California and the Midwest. Seniors save 10% everywhere but can enjoy up to 50% off on specific routes. The company also has a rewards program, much like airlines, and offers points that can be spent toward travel rewards, hotels, car rentals, and more.

Train luggage and carry-on rules.

Just like airlines, train travel comes with carry-on rules. Local commuter rail will usually have signage posted at stations, and no matter which line you’re using, you can expect to leave behind commonly prohibited items like weapons and explosives. There is no checked baggage on these rails, so pack lightly. Some, like Metra, have luggage racks but no space for special items like skis or non-folding strollers.

Amtrak has more room for baggage and, therefore, more rules. The company allows one personal item and two carry-on items. Personal items must fit under the seat in front of you, and carry-on bags must fit on the luggage rack overhead or the luggage tower. Exact size requirements can be found online. Passengers can check up to four bags at stations that accept checked baggage — but be sure to check ahead of time as not every station accommodates it. Where available, the first two are free, and the additional two cost $20 per bag. Free ID tags are available at Amtrak stations, and it’s recommended to have your name and address on every bag you bring. Passengers traveling with an infant under two are allowed an extra infant item as a carry-on at no additional cost.

Amenities on Train Cars

If you’re taking a lengthy Amtrak trip, it’s worth knowing what amenities you can count on ahead of time. Will there be snacks and drinks, like an airplane would offer? Amtrak offers dining on overnight trains, as well as quiet cars for passengers who need to work  on board and accommodations for pets on trips up to seven hours long. Many trains and stations also offer onboard WiFi, as well as private cars and three seating options: coach, business class, and first class. For more details about onboard amenities, check out Amtrak’s website.

How to Book Scenic Train Trips in the US

While Amtrak offers beautiful cross-country trips, it isn’t the only US railroad designed around beautiful scenery! If you’re more interested in natural beauty than traveling or commuting, there are some train tickets you can’t go without booking. The Grand Canyon Railway offers all-day adventure and views of the canyon’s natural wonders. The Empire Builder is a specific Amtrak train that showcases the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and departs from Chicago. The Napa Valley Wine Train offers sips and beautiful California scenery, and the Cass Scenic Railroad, operated by the West Virginia State Park system, offers 4.5-hour-long rides that showcase the historic Appalachian region.

Whether you’re looking to commute, vacation, or see the natural beauty of the United States, there’s a train ticket for you. No matter your destination, planning ahead and familiarizing yourself with railway rules will make your trip go much more smoothly.

Some airline issues get you a refund, some don't. How it works | Cruising Altitude

booking train tickets with travel pass

John Schrier was traveling home to New York from Taipei last month and said the flight was interminably boring.

“As we boarded, you could see that about half of the screens had a black screen,” he told me. “Half of us were not able to watch an entertainment system.”

Schrier said he reached out to the Taiwanese airline EVA Air on multiple platforms, including on social media during the flight, but said he initially had no luck hearing back or getting reimbursed for the inconvenience of a transpacific flight with no inflight entertainment.

Unfortunately for Schrier, it’s unlikely that compensation will be required. Airlines have conditions attached to every ticket, known as contracts of carriage, that outline their minimum obligations to passengers. Contracts of carriage, coupled with rules from regulators like the Department of Transportation, give passengers their basic rights when flying – but seatback screens are not usually considered mandatory equipment, even if they’re advertised as an available amenity.

Nevertheless, the DOT recently announced new rules that give consumers increased protections when other kinds of things go wrong, so here’s what you need to know about what is and isn’t a reimbursable offense by an airline these days.

What is an airline contract of carriage?

Airline contracts of carriage are the terms and conditions that passengers agree to when they fly. Travelers automatically sign on when they purchase their tickets, even if they don’t have to formally sign a document. The contracts typically outline an airline’s commitments for transportation, as well as what happens if your flight is delayed or canceled and other fine print related to your itinerary.

“Some airlines have a customer bill of rights to basically simplify the airline contract of carriage, but essentially it’s what’s allowed, what’s not allowed, but everybody has a little bit different verbiage,” Loulu Lima, founder of the Texas-based travel agency Book Here Give Here, told me.

If you want to comb through the fine print, airlines make their contracts of carriage available on their websites. EVA’s contract , which covered Schrier’s trip, includes terms and conditions on how tickets can be used and (not) transferred, how stopovers work, what kinds of delays or cancellations make a passenger eligible for a refund and other assorted policies.

“It’s going to depend on the airline. An American airline is going to have a different set of rules than an Asian one,” Lima said. “The rules are really written based on the country of the corporate office.

Here are the contracts of carriage for each of the major U.S. airlines, if you want to take a look:

  • American Airlines
  • United Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Southwest Airlines

Can passengers get a refund for broken inflight entertainment?

Usually not.

“If you have status, you might get some loyalty points out of it, but other than maybe going on social media and making a big stink about it you’re probably not going to get anything,” Lima said.

Some airlines are also more accommodating than others and may voluntarily give passengers credits when something like that goes wrong. A few years ago, I was flying on Delta, and my seatback screen was broken, and they gave me about 2,500 SkyMiles as a goodwill gesture.

Schrier said EVA eventually offered him about $100 in compensation.

Last week's Cruising Altitude: Another Boeing plane issue? Don't fall for the headlines.

New Department of Transportation rule increases traveler protections

While inflight entertainment isn’t typically considered critical equipment by an airline, which means it’s safe to travel even if those seatback screens aren’t working, the DOT recently announced new rules that help guarantee protections and refunds for other kinds of issues in the air.

Part of the change mean:

  • Airlines will have to automatically issue refunds within 20 days if a passenger’s flight is canceled or significantly delayed (over three hours) and they choose not to travel on alternative flights offered.
  • If a traveler pays a checked bag fee and their bag is significantly delayed, they’ll be entitled to a refund of the fee.
  • If a traveler pays in advance for an ancillary service like an extra legroom seat or Wi-Fi and then does not have access to that amenity on the flight, they will have to receive a refund for those charges.

The refund policies were also coupled with another new rule that requires more upfront, clear-cut disclosure of airline fees.

“A lot of what we hear from passengers involves refunds – or the lack thereof – for passengers who experience cancellations and disruptions.” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement announcing the new rules. “Infrequent fliers are especially vulnerable, since they may not know that we are here for them, and are often not told about their right to a refund, and too often instead offered compensation in form of a voucher or miles whose value amounts to pennies on the dollar of what they are actually owed. Or they enter the vortex of call centers and chatbots, sometimes giving up before they get their money back.”

Schrier, for example, said he had a lot of trouble getting through to EVA to file his complaint.

It’s definitely frustrating for travelers who are on a long flight without functioning entertainment. I’m usually totally dependent on the seatback screen for my distractions while flying. But if the alternative is for a flight to get significantly delayed or canceled while technicians fix the operating system, I think I’d rather just get going.

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

A blue airport screen showing extensive cancellations and delays is shown in close up with a man standing in front of it.

By Christine Chung

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.

Pubs could stay open late during the Euros this summer, according to The Sun .

Home Secretary James Cleverly hinted he was looking into extending pub opening hours for the tournament on The Sun show Never Mind The Ballots.

He said: "I will certainly look into it."

We've been bringing you news of plenty of bank switch deals offering free cash these past few months, but Virgin Money has a different kind of incentive for switchers - a 12% interest rate.

People who switch to its M Account, M Plus Account or Club M Account will be able to get bonus interest rates of 10% gross/10.47% AER (fixed).

This is on top of the 2% gross/2.02% AER (variable) interest rate already offered on current account balances up to £1,000 - meaning customers can get an interest rate of 12%.

No other savings accounts offer interest rates this high, and the bonus applies for a year.

TikTok will restore millions of songs to its app after settling a royalty dispute with Universal Music Group.

Users had been unable to make videos featuring songs from the likes of Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande due to a row over how much TikTok was paying.

The fight had led to Universal withdrawing music from some of the world's most famous singers.

The dispute appears to have been settled as the companies announced "improved remuneration" for artists.

More than 10,500 black cab drivers in London have launched a £250m legal case against Uber.

They accuse the app of breaking the capital's taxi booking rules and deliberately misleading authorities to secure a licence.

Transport for London (TfL) rules state drivers cannot take bookings directly from customers and must instead use a centralised system.

The drivers, who are being advised by law firm Mishcon de Reya, argue they have faced unfair competition from Uber and that it knowingly broke these rules.

Uber has denied these allegations and said the claims are unfounded.

The company has faced numerous challenges in London, including refusals from TfL to renew its licence which were later successfully appealed.

Billie Eilish fans are complaining about "outrageous" ticket prices for her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour.

The 22-year-old singer unveiled an 81-date tour programme this week, sending fans rushing to secure tickets.

But some expressed disbelief on social media at the prices.

"I know I moan about this all the time, but look at the price of Billie Eilish tickets," one fan called Marianne wrote on X, sharing a screenshot of seated tickets priced at £398.50.

"Something seriously needs to be done about ticket prices, it's f*****g outrageous!"

Another complained they had paid less for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, which was also criticised for high ticket prices.

A fan called Liv tagged Eilish, Live Nation and Ticketmaster, writing: "Are you ok? £145 for standing tickets is atrocious."

Thousands of people who receive government benefits, including Universal Credit, will be paid as early as tomorrow.

This is because there's a bank holiday coming up on 6 May which will affect benefits paid by both the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HMRC (they don't pay benefits on bank holidays).

A statement on the government website reads: "If your payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday you'll usually be paid on the working day before. This may be different for tax credits and child benefit."

Here are the 11 different government benefits that are expected to be paid early:

  • Universal credit;
  • State Pension;
  • Pension Credit;
  • Disability Living Allowance;
  • Attendance Allowance;
  • Carer's Allowance;
  • Child Benefit;
  • Income Support;
  • Jobseekers Allowance;
  • Personal Independence Payment;
  • Tax credits (such as Working Tax Credit)

Will your benefit payment change?

No, you'll be paid the same amount you usually receive.

Benefits are usually paid straight into your bank, building society or credit account.

Goldman Sachs is removing a cap on bonuses for London-based staff, paving the way for it to resume making multimillion pound payouts to its best-performing traders and dealmakers.

Sky News can exclusively reveal the Wall Street banking giant notified its UK employees today that it had decided to abolish the existing pay ratio imposed under European Union rules and which the government recently decided to scrap.

In a video message to staff, Richard Gnodde, chief executive of Goldman Sachs International, which comprises its operations outside the US, said it had decided to bring its remuneration policy in Britain in line with its operations elsewhere in the world.

"We are a global firm and to the extent possible we adopt a consistent global approach across everything we do," Mr Gnodde said in the message, which has been relayed to Sky News.

"The bonus cap rules were an important factor preventing us from being consistent in the area of compensation."

Aldi's market share has fallen - as people seemingly head back to traditional supermarkets for their shopping.

Aldi's share of the grocery market slipped from 10.8% to 10.4% in the 12 weeks to 20 April.

NIQ data shows sales rose just 1.3% in the period - for Morrisons it was 4.4%, Tesco 5.8% and Sainsbury's 6.6%.

Asda was the laggard with sales falling 0.9%.

Ocado is the fastest growing retailer with sales up 12%.

Aldi's rival discounter, Lidl, saw sales surge 9.5%, bumping its market share up to 8.2%. Media campaigns highlighting new ranges helped, NIQ said.

A Santander online outage is affecting thousands of UK customers.

Over 2,000 reports have been made on Downdetector - indicting the issue is widespread.

Customers have been met with messages like this...

Santander wrote on X: "We are aware some customers are experiencing issues accessing online services, we apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

"We're working hard to resolve this as soon as possible."

Following on from our previous post, and the OECD also says the UK will grow more slowly next year than any other major advanced economy.

It puts this down to stealth taxes and high interest rates squeezing the economy.

The organisation, which is based in Paris, downgraded its forecasts for GDP to 0.4% this year and 1% in 2025.

In February, the UK had been in the middle of the rankings with forecast growth of 0.7% this year and 1.2% next.

The OECD pointed to the fact "tax receipts keep rising towards historic highs" - with National Insurance cuts not offsetting the additional burden Britons are feeling due to tax thresholds not rising along with inflation due to a government freeze.

Some good news is expected for UK workers as the OECD said there will be "stronger" wage growth when inflation is factored in against pay.
