BMW 530e xDrive Touring, taking it to its homeland

The BMW 5 Series is a familiar face on the roads everywhere in the world! The first-ever 5 Series (E12) was introduced a whole while ago, the year was 1972. Since then, the car became more and more popular which resulted in the seventh generation 5! The 7th generation introduced the 530e sedan (G30), but for this Touring-model (G31) we had to wait for the facelift. Dads, now is the moment to enjoy the 530e Touring!

292 hp or wait … only 184 horses.

The BMW 530e is in the middle of the plug-in hybrid power range currently on offer. Ward has tested the BMW 545e (go check it out here ) which was the top-dog in the hybrid setup, while the entry-level gets a 520e on the back. This 530e gets a “ great sounding ” 292 combined horsepower. But combined is a pretty important word in that sentence. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 184 hp and 300 Nm of torque while the electromotor puts in a 109 hp and 265 Nm boost. Together giving you a kick of 292 hp and 420 Nm of torque. With a full battery, the “ more than 2-ton weighing ” 5 Series with four-wheel drive will hit 100 km/h in 6,1 seconds and - also with an empty battery - the top speed is set on a speed of 225 km/h. If you would go “full eco-warrior” that top speed is just 140 km/h. No sporty numbers, but the 530e isn’t developed as a sporty car. With that weight and the four-wheel drive, you will always have grip in this luxury cruise mobile. Just like BMW has intended.

292 or 184, that’s a big difference and that’s why I have mixed feelings about this one. In the first part of our test, the car performed great! In Belgium, we are forced to change to an electric or hybrid car and the charging stations are popping up like mushrooms. So having a place to charge the car wasn't a problem and you could enjoy a full battery most of the time. That‘s where the car shines the most. It combines the electric en petrol engine without any hesitation and is perfect in its transition between those two. The car feels faster and more crispy than the 6,1 seconds would suggest! So until now, great car!

In the second part of the week, we took the BMW to the Christmas markets in Germany, its homeland. Driving the first 300 kilometers of that trip and for the first time the car lost all of its battery and the painful part appeared. After 45 kilometers - BMW is talking about around 60 km - all the electric juice was gone and the engine was always running. The average consumption made a jump to 8-9 liters per 100 kilometers - the tank capacity is just 46 liters - and the power dropped back to 184 hp. 184 horsepower for a 2-ton car ain’t mutch and overtaking cars became a hazard. Arriving in a beautiful town along the Moselle and the search for a charging station was started. For a big town, they offered as few as 4 charging points and those were always occupied. So you can see, the second part of the week wasn’t as smooth as the first one.

bmw 530e tour xdrive

Combining these two experiences and I would still recommend the 530e Touring xDrive! The average consumption was 7,5l/100km and 2,5 kWh/100km. These numbers were hit even with the charging problem in Germany. And I think I could get even lower if I didn’t use the driving charge button because the Bimmer gets really thirsty in that mode!

Fresh looks

And we like those looks. The looks haven’t changed that much over the facelift but those details make the car pop. The greatest change is those Laser-headlights! Those are so extremely sexy and lean! Surely those day running lights!

In the side-profile, the car looks as clean as its pre-facelift brother or sister. Nothing to fancy or to “hey, look at me” just like it should be in this segment. At the back, the lights got the biggest changes. Oh, and those exhaust tips have changed. Again, nothing too dramatic and why should they change a good thing?

bmw 530e tour xdrive

Classic BMW

Getting into the car and you can almost smell the quality! The high degree of finish in combination with a “not-too-exaggerated” digital stuff. Yes, the rivals are showing up with a more customizable dashboard. But, if you ask me -and you are because you’re reading this- too much is too much. The dashboard of the 5-Serie is clean and easy to use. Just like its infotainment system including the navigation and all of the safety tech (adaptive cruise control with lane assist, reversing assistant, emergency stop, …).

So all good in the BMW 530e Touring? Sadly not. Maybe I'm getting a little bit old, but I wasn’t able to get the seats just right. The next thing wasn’t the fault of my back! Thanks to the extra battery (it’s a hybrid, guys!) the trunk has been lifted and you lose important space if you’ve got a 15-month-old son. An impressive difference of 130 liters versus the 530i Touring. But to end on a positive note: I adore the back window that can be opened independently of the boot lid. Something BMW has been doing for a while now.

If you put the BMW up against its main reveals (the Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class) it will take home the trophy of “most sporty feeling” without the car being too hard. That’s something I’m looking for in a family car. The family car doesn’t need to be boring. The 530e xDrive Touring will set you back 68.400,01€ (BE). But then it begins! A nice color, great looking rims, M-package, leather, comfort access, … Shooting past 80.000€? Easy!

BMW 530e Touring hybrid review

A tempting blend of performance, practicality, efficiency and style means the current 530e touring still has lots to offer.

4.0 out of 5

  • Cheap to run
  • Drives brilliantly
  • Looks great inside and out
  • Soon to be replaced
  • Pricey for private buyers
  • Battery eats into boot space

This generation of BMW 5 Series has been around since 2016, and an all-new incarnation (including a fully electric i5 version ) isn’t far off. But such is its prowess in almost every single area, it’s not surprising to find the car still holds appeal for buyers in 2022 – particularly in practical and efficient plug-in hybrid estate guise.

Granted, the 530e is a little less practical than a purely petrol or diesel-powered 5 Series Touring, offering a 430-litre rather than 560-litre boot for your luggage. But you can still boost that to 1,560 litres by lowering the back seats and BMW has managed to avoid the awkward boot-floor step found in one of the 5 Series’ main rivals – the Mercedes E-Class Estate .

BMW 530e Touring

Furthermore, the 12kWh battery that has reduced that boot space means over 30 miles of driving on pure-electric power is possible. That electric range helps the 530e Touring achieve an impressively low 42g/km CO2 emissions figure in official testing, which in turns translates to a very low Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax rating for company-car drivers, who make up a large proportion of this car’s customer base.

And while it stacks up financially, the 530e Touring – just like its four-door saloon counterpart – doesn’t compromise the superb driving experience every 5 Series is known for. The steering is a great weight and matches the chassis’s front-end response perfectly, while the car also absorbs bumps well, making it  a comfortable cruiser with well judged balance between ride and handling.

Combined with an electric motor, the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine develops 288bhp and 420Nm of torque, with a temporary additional 40bhp available from the ‘XtraBoost’ function, for a 6.1-second 0-62mph time. But even the electric motor on its own is capable of propelling the big estate in swift and smooth fashion, particularly at lower speeds around town. And unlike some plug-in hybrids, it can easily hit that claimed 30-plus mile range in everyday driving, thanks in part to very effective regenerative braking.

BMW 530e Touring

Refinement isn’t lost when the petrol engine kicks in, either, helped by an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Things do get a little clunky when running low on battery power, however, so like all plug-in hybrids, the 530e suits those who tend to do mostly shorter journeys rather than regular long-distance motorway runs.

In addition to strong refinement, great cabin quality and easy-to-use technology make the 530e Touring’s interior a great place to spend time, however long your journeys are. Although it’s not a cutting-edge design anymore, having debuted in 2016, the benefit of that is that there are still knobs and buttons for the climate control, rather than a touchscreen interface, and the intuitive iDrive click wheel still operates the 12.3-inch infotainment setup.

SE is the entry point to the range, but the majority of customers opt for the sportier styling and stronger resale values of the M Sport versions. Standard kit here includes LED lights, parking sensors, cruise control, 18-inch alloys, M Sport brakes and gloss-black trim, with rear-drive version costing just over £57,000 and the four-wheel-drive xDrive variant around £2,000 more. More importantly for business users, the 530e Touring attracts less than half the annual Benefit-in-Kind tax bill of an equivalent 520d diesel model.

New BMW 530e Touring 2022 review

The revised bmw 530e touring plug-in estate is a great family-friendly all-rounder.

bmw 530e tour xdrive

4.0 out of 5

BMW refined the formula for its plug-in hybrid 5 Series estate with model year updates adding more tech. But fundamentally the 530e Touring is as good as ever, blending superb refinement and driving dynamics with usable all-electric range, strong efficiency and great cabin quality. Practicality takes a hit, but not by much, given the benefits elsewhere.

BMW ’s 5 Series is a perennial high achiever. It recently scooped a class win and a commendation at the annual Auto Express New Car Awards – and the updated 530e Touring is one of the most appealing models in the line-up.

It mixes practicality and huge efficiency potential, not to mention great driving dynamics combined with comfort and refinement. Plus there’s the impressive infotainment and tech that have come to characterise the Bavarian firm’s best models.

Best estate cars - header image

We’ll start with the bodystyle, the point that defines the Touring. In estate form, the 5 Series plug-in hybrid offers 430 litres of space; it’s some way down on the regular 530 Touring’s 560 litres, but then, packaging a 12kWh battery for a claimed all-electric range of up to 32 miles (in xDrive spec) in a car that’s already been optimised when it comes to use of space isn’t easy. Compromise is a reality with a PHEV, and with this BMW, boot capacity is one that you’ll have to make to some degree.

We say that because 430 litres is actually still fair. This rises to 1,560 litres when you fold the rear seats down – a feat that takes little effort – while the large hatch (power-operated as standard across the range) and wide opening that it reveals do at least mean loading items is easy. However, the charging cables live in a bag that sits in the boot; some underfloor storage for this would be preferable.

BMW 530e Touring - rear

We have very few complaints about the way the 530e Touring drives, however. The battery feeds an electric motor that, combined with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, delivers a total output of 288bhp and 420Nm of torque.

There’s a function called XtraBoost, which delivers a 39bhp hit for 10 seconds, so the 0-62mph dash takes 6.1 seconds. But it’s the refinement the electrified powertrain brings, thanks to the e-motor’s impressive standalone torque output of 265Nm, that makes the 530e so relaxing to drive.

Even on a rainy, cooler day, our test car easily topped 30 miles on electric power alone, with the added (but relatively mild) regenerative braking meaning that with a bit of anticipation, on a quiet country road you don’t have to touch the brakes, just easing off the throttle for corners with the motor working in reverse to slow the car.

Even when the petrol engine is working in conjunction with that electric motor, it’s relatively refined. The eight-speed automatic gearbox is good, and the system only gets a little clunky when it’s running low on battery power.

BMW 530e Touring - dash

Despite carrying an extra 170kg of mass compared with a pure-petrol 530i Touring, this plug-in version still handles the way you’d expect a BMW to. The steering is a great weight and matches the chassis’s front-end response perfectly.

As you can see from the picture above, there is some roll, but the chassis controls this well on the whole. Besides, the initial compliance in the suspension gives the 5 Series a sweet ability to absorb bumps, so it’s a comfortable cruiser that offers a well judged balance between ride and handling.

The cabin can still cut it in 2022 as well, despite elements of the design stretching back to 2016. The benefits of this are that the 5 Series still feature knobs and buttons for its climate controls, which are intuitive to use on the move, and the firm’s iDrive click wheel still operates the infotainment system, which runs BMW’s OS 7 set-up on a good-sized 12.3-inch screen.

It’s a shame the firm hasn’t applied its latest OS 8 system here, but with other models such as the 2 Series Active Tourer, now touchscreen-only, we’d rather have this method of operation; OS 7 still works superbly well anyway. The 12.3-inch digital dash is a slick piece of tech, too, while build and material quality both feel first rate.

All M Sport models boast the aforementioned infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto , LED lights, parking sensors, cruise control, 18-inch alloys and sharper styling, M Sport brakes and gloss-black trim. Prices are £57,325 for the rear-drive car, or £59,325 for this xDrive model, while business users will cut their Benefit-in-Kind costs by more than half by choosing the 530e over the equivalent 520d diesel.

2018 BMW 530e xDrive Plug-In Hybrid

The 5, Electrified.

2018 bmw 530e xdrive

The quiet operation and up to 15 miles of electric-only driving range provided by the 530e’s eDrive plug-in powertrain complement the latest 5-series’s focus on luxury. A 7.3-kWh lithium-ion battery stuffed under the trunk floor powers a 111-hp electric motor/generator positioned between the engine and transmission. These components are shared with the smaller 330e , larger 740e, and taller X5 xDrive40e. The 530e’s 180-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four shares specifications with the 330e; BMW’s other iPerformance plug-ins use more powerful four-bangers.

Gas and Electric

Total output is identical to the four-cylinder, nonhybrid 530i’s 248 horsepower, although torque is up a substantial 52 lb-ft, to 310. The extra urge offsets this all-wheel-drive model’s extra weight. Our test car reached 60 mph in the same 6.1 seconds as a 429-pound-lighter, all-wheel-drive 530i xDrive we recently tested. In normal operation, the electric motor (which replaces the eight-speed automatic transmission’s torque converter) blends nicely with the turbocharged engine to provide effortless thrust, particularly when pulling away from a stop.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Luxury vehicle, Personal luxury car, Executive car, Automotive design, Sedan, Bmw, Bmw 3 series (f30),

Aside from relatively sluggish high-speed acceleration—hey, the thing’s heavy—the plug-in 5-series has virtually no downside. It costs exactly the same as the gas-only 530i. Its EPA-estimated 15-mile electric-only driving range may be low by modern plug-in standards, easily beaten by the far less expensive Toyota Prius Prime, the plug-in Cadillac CT6, and the Chevrolet Volt, but that is 15 miles of electric-only driving you can’t get in a normal 530i. Even if you don’t splurge on a 240-volt connection for the home garage, plugging the 530e into a standard 120-volt wall outlet easily tops off the battery overnight. BMW says charging the pack from its fully depleted to fully charged states takes seven hours on 120 volts and less than three when using a 240-volt source.

As with all plug-in hybrids, the 530e’s efficiency depends on how it’s used. We notched a so-so 30 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) over 1000 miles. That number could have been higher had we prioritized electric-only operation, limiting trips to less than, say, 20 miles and constantly plugging in the car to maintain a full battery charge. We didn’t do that. We charged the 530e when it was convenient—mostly at our office—and otherwise drove it like a normal hybrid. On our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test, the 530e returned 39 MPGe, or 5 mpg better than the 530i xDrive.

More noteworthy is how seamlessly the technology is integrated. Because the electric motor feeds torque through the traditional automatic transmission, running through the same gears as the engine does, even in electric-only mode the driving experience feels natural. (Most smaller plug-ins use continuously variable automatic transmissions or position the electric motors on a separate axle from the gas engine, giving the car a bimodal feel.) Running solely on electrons, the beefy 530e moves well enough around town.

Manage Your Own Energy

Besides the Sport, Comfort, and Eco Pro driving modes, there are three settings for deploying electric power: Max eDrive, Auto eDrive, and Battery Control. In the first, the 530e operates as a pure electric up to 87 mph or until the driver pushes the accelerator pedal past the kickdown switch—essentially, to the floor—which the car registers as a call for the powertrain’s full combined efforts and fires the engine for help. When the battery’s charge is nearly depleted, the 530e reverts to regular hybrid operation. In Auto eDrive, the car sorts out when to switch to electric-only operation for brief periods for enhanced efficiency, while in Battery Control the driver can specify that the battery maintain a set charge level—so that the energy can be saved for later electric-only driving—or command that the car recharge its own battery as it drives along.

Keeping tabs on these modes is no problem: BMW fits an easy-to-read analog battery-charge gauge opposite the visually similar fuel gauge in the instrument cluster, something we wish more automakers would do. Between those gauges sits an analog speedometer and a digitally rendered analog power meter that, to the right of the 12 o’clock mark, displays how much electric thrust is being deployed as a percentage. (The needle moves counterclockwise when decelerating to show how much energy is being captured to recharge the battery.) Depending on the battery’s state of charge and the selected electric-drive mode, the power meter also highlights—via an animated overlay—exactly how much electric thrust the driver can deploy without firing the gas engine. Simply press the accelerator until the gauge’s needle nuzzles against the top end of this visual cue to keep the engine at bay.

A separate digital meter accessible via the trip computer at the bottom of the gauge cluster condenses battery charge and miles-per-gallon data into a linear graph. The left side tracks how many miles of electric-only driving you’ve accomplished so far on that tank of fuel and lights up in a bright blue when the engine isn’t running; the right side depicts where your driving falls on a spectrum from zero to 99 mpg. The latest BMW Connected+ phone app offers even more ways to keep tabs on the 530e, including remotely checking the battery’s state of charge (you can even set charging parameters), preconditioning the interior, or peeking at the car’s surroundings in 3D via a remote feed from the parking cameras.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Luxury vehicle, Personal luxury car, Steering wheel, Motor vehicle, Mid-size car, Executive car, Center console,

Frankly, it’s more fun to try to maximize the 530e’s use of electricity by monitoring the intuitive dashboard interface than it is to hustle it around. The steering is devoid of feel, and the body wallows slightly when the car quickly changes directions in Comfort mode. In lieu of any semblance of fun-to-drive, the BMW serves up a creamy ride (even with our test car’s $1000 adaptive suspension in its firmer Sport setting) and a roomy interior that is deathly quiet. It may be capable of cornering at 0.88 g, but it sends the driver few messages that it has any interest in doing so. That the car needed 193 feet to stop from 70 mph is probably more attributable to mass, but the standard Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Run Flat tires aren’t exactly performance rubber. Still, that’s easily 20 feet farther than we’ve come to expect from German luxury sedans in general—and fully 39 feet longer than what we measured for a Mercedes-Benz E300 4MATIC riding on summer tires. An attentive driver can sense the transitions between regenerative and friction braking, but the pedal otherwise feels natural and progressive and, long distances notwithstanding, there was no fade after several repetitions of the exercise.

Although the 530e xDrive’s $55,695 base price is identical to that of the non-PHEV 530i, our test car rang in at $69,760. More than $14,000 of that was attributable to options, including these packages: $800 Cold Weather, $3400 Driving Assistance Plus (which includes the $1700 Driving Assistance package), $1300 Parking Assistance, $2700 Premium, and $1050 Lighting. Yet the car you see here merely covers the luxury-sedan essentials such as heated seats, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and premium audio. Fiddling around with BMW’s consumer website, we configured a 530e with a sticker price just shy of $84,000. If you really need to brag that your mid-size German luxury plug-in hybrid was expensive, the 530e offers plenty of opportunity.

2021 BMW 530e review: A likable but compromised plug-in hybrid sedan

The updated 5 Series has a likable plug-in hybrid option, but is it the best BMW PHEV you can buy?

bmw 530e tour xdrive

The 530e is a very handsome sedan.

The seventh-generation BMW 5 Series gets a few small changes for 2021, including tweaked style and better tech. You can buy the 5 Series with everything from a sensible four-cylinder turbocharged engine to a stonking V8 , but for folks who want great power without totally destroying their efficiency cred, BMW continues to offer the plug-in hybrid 530e.

2021 BMW 530e

  • Slight power bump
  • Smoother front-end styling
  • Larger infotainment screen

Don't like

  • Poor electric range
  • M Sport option doesn't add handling upgrades

In the 530e, BMW pairs a four-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor for a total of 288 horsepower -- 40 more than last year -- and 310 pound-feet of torque. Power goes to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, but you can also get the 530e with BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

I like plug-in hybrids for their ability to do double duty: I can cruise around town in EV mode but I still have the convenience of a gas engine for longer trips. The bummer here is that the 530e is only EPA-rated for 21 miles of all-electric range (the xDrive model lowers that rating to 18 miles). That's slightly less range than what you get in the smaller 330e , which uses the same powertrain. The larger X5 PHEV , meanwhile, offers more power and more EV driving range.

2021 BMW 530e: The plug-in 5 Series gets a refresh

bmw 530e tour xdrive

Electricity is stored in a 12-kilowatt-hour battery, fed by a 3.7-kW onboard charger. Don't expect super-quick charging times here, folks -- PHEVs are definitely meant to be plugged in overnight. On my Level 2 home charger it takes 3 hours to go from totally empty to full-on full. BMW says an 80% charge from 0% takes 2 hours.

The 530e isn't particularly quick but the instant electric torque makes the sedan scoot. There's an XtraBoost feature that delivers an additional 40 hp under full-throttle acceleration when the car is in Sport mode, but the difference isn't terribly noticeable. BMW estimates a 5.7-second 0-to-60-mph time for the rear-wheel-drive 530e.

2021 BMW 530e

These LEDs double as the running lights and turn signals.

As for on-road handling, the 530e is enjoyable but not what I'd call sporty. Plus, the plug-in hybrid drivetrain adds weight; this sedan tips the scales at over 4,200 pounds, and that's before you tack on an additional 100 pounds for all-wheel drive. My tester's M Sport package doesn't offer any real handling upgrades, though there's a lot of grip thanks to the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. Body roll is kept in check and the steering is nicely weighted but vague -- typical 5 Series attributes. Really, my only major complaint is that the M Sport brakes are a little squishy and hard to modulate.

Of course, the big reason to pick a plug-in hybrid is overall efficiency. After a week of spirited driving and regular charging, I'm seeing 37 miles per gallon. That's a great increase over the base 530i's 28 mpg combined.

The 530e's interior is largely the same as before, save for the addition of a now-standard 12.3-inch infotainment screen. This display runs BMW's iDrive 7 tech with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto , which is great since I find the native system's menus and submenus a little tough to navigate. The 530e has one USB-A and a 12-volt outlet up front, and there's a USB-C port tucked away in the center console. Rear-seat passengers get two USB-Cs and a 12-volt outlet, as well. Wireless charging is available as part of the $1,850 Premium Package that also includes heated front seats, a head-up display and a Harman Kardon audio system.

2021 BMW 530e

The 530e's plug-in powertrain makes 288 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque.

I'm a big fan of BMW's optional Back-Up Assistant technology that records the last 50 yards of your drive (at speeds below 20 mph, like when you're parking) and can then steer the car along that same path in reverse. It's very useful for getting out of a tight parking space or navigating a tricky driveway.

However, the 530e's list of standard driving aids is minimal, which is sadly par for the course for most German luxury sedans. While blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning and rear cross-traffic alert are standard, you'll need to pony up for the good stuff. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, front cross-traffic alert and an emergency stop assist are all part of the $1,700 Driving Assistance Plus Package.

On top of that, you can also add the Extended Traffic Jam Assist, which allows for limited hands-free driving in stop and go traffic. This system isn't nearly as robust as Cadillac's Super Cruise , which can operate at higher speeds and has lane-changing abilities. BMW's tech, meanwhile, only works below 37 mph. In my experience, the system doesn't react quick enough when someone cuts in front of me, and I find myself needing to take over a lot of the time. Best to just skip this one, I'm afraid.

2021 BMW 530e

The 530e is a nice car, but not the BMW plug-in we'd buy.

The 530e starts at $58,195 including $995 for destination, but the test car seen here tops out above $70,000. Skipping superfluous upgrades like the $2,500 M Sport package can reduce that cost a bit, and poking around on the configurator, I can spec a nicely optioned 530e in the low $60,000s. Much better.

Still, I can't help but think I'd be better served by the BMW 330e or X5 xDrive45e. The 330e is a little smaller, but it's a lot less expensive and it adds a few miles of EV range. The X5 PHEV, meanwhile, starts a few thousand dollars above the 530e, but you get standard all-wheel drive, more space, more power and more range. Especially considering today's SUV-all-the-things trend, good as the 5 Series is, the X5 really seems like the best way to go.

Score Breakdown

2021 BMW 530e xDrive Review: Best Midsize Luxury Plug-In Sedan?

Bmw increased the plug-in 5 series’ battery with the facelift and the car is all the better for it..

2021 BMW 530e

BMW is embracing electrification as quickly as it can, but until it can begin churning out fully-electric models, it’s resorting to electrifying its core range of models, like the 5 Series sedan. Recently facelifted, the plug-in hybrid version of the 5 Series - the 530e - has gained a bigger battery and slightly more range, but is it really enough to make it a recommendable purchase?

Well, After spending a weekend with the car, I have come to the conclusion that it is recommendable for the right buyer, if said buyer can commit to keeping it charged. This is what I say about all plug-in hybrids - forget the impressive claimed efficiency and CO2 numbers that the manufacturer provides; you will never even come close to matching them if you don’t keep the battery topped up.

2021 BMW 530e

BMW has increased the 530e’s battery from 9.2 kWh to 12 kWh, so now its usable capacity is just over 10 kWh (before it was around 7 kWh, for the smaller battery pack). Now the 530e has a claimed WLTP electric range of between 49 - 57 km (30 - 35 miles), although those numbers seem optimistic, and the EPA’s estimation of up to 21 miles seems a lot more realistic in real world driving conditions.

After performing two separate electric range tests , one at 70 mph on the highway and another in the city, I managed to achieve just over 32 km (almost 20 miles) and 25 km (15.5 miles) respectively. In fact, I even managed to surpass the conservative EPA rating for the 530e xDrive (like my tester) of 18 miles.

Gallery: 2021 BMW 530e

2021 BMW 530e

There is nothing to criticize when it comes to performance and handling, though. The car makes 288 horsepower and 420 Nm (309 pound-feet) of torque, and it can sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds. They may not sound like blisteringly quick numbers, but the car feels especially spritely from behind the wheel, with a particular highlight being the throttle response (which is almost instant, courtesy of the electric motor that’s built into the gearbox).

Through the corners, you do start to feel the car’s nearly two-ton weight, but thanks to adaptive dampers that do a great job of keeping the mass under control, as well as rear-wheel steering and a variable ratio steering rack, it feels nimble and light on its feet. It does feel more cumbersome than smaller BMWs, especially compared to a 330e, for instance, but for such a big luxurious barge, it’s actually remarkably good.

You can pick up a 530e starting at around $57,200 in the US, while in Romania where I performed the road and range tests, it starts at just under €60,000. My lavishly equipped 530e xDrive tester cost €92,500, but you don’t have to spend that much to make it feel properly luxurious and special.

Some notable options that bumped up the price were the black Nappa leather upholstery, the highly-adjustable Comfort seats (that are heated cooled and have a massage function), soft-closing doors and trunk, gesture control, the big 12.3-inch infotainment display, four-zone climate control, heated rear seats, to name but a few.

My tester also had BMW’s full suite of semi-autonomous driving technologies and they all worked very well together. Going on road trips in the 530e is a real pleasure - it will transport four people in the utmost comfort for hundreds and hundreds of miles. The facelift also makes it look so much better than before - I honestly didn’t really like the pre-LCI model that much (although I by no means hate it), but now, with the facelift that brings new light clusters and revised fascias, I could almost call this car pretty; this design will age quite well, I think.

Don’t buy this car thinking you will achieve BMW’s claimed efficiency numbers if you don’t commit to charging it. If you do make sure to charge it, you will have what is probably the best luxury plug-in hybrid sedan currently on the market, one that blends comfort and a touch of class with decent electric range and a sporty character when you want it.

The 2023 BMW 530e is a spacious, fun and well-balanced sedan that brings the brand's trademark performance and refinement together with a fuel-sipping plug-in-hybrid powertrain. It isn't a perfect Bimmer, but the 530e does a fine job of incorporating hybrid tech into an already great car.

Is the 2023 BMW 530e a Good Car?

Yes, the 2023 BMW 530e is a very good car. It has a classy, spacious and well-built cabin, comfortable seats, an intuitive infotainment system and a decent assortment of standard tech features. The powertrain is zippy and fuel-efficient, and the 530e delivers sure-footed handling dynamics without sacrificing ride quality. However, this BMW's interior isn't as luxurious as those found in some rivals, and its trunk is small for the class. Rear-row head- and legroom are just middling, and tall occupants might feel cramped in back.

Should I Buy the 2023 BMW 530e?

The 530e is a rock-solid option thanks to a well-honed interior, refined powertrain and balanced ride and handling. If you want something speedier and with more standard tech, comfort and driver-assistance features, consider the Volvo S90 Recharge or V60 Recharge . For a less pricey and slightly sportier BMW PHEV experience, the 330e is worth a shot. Just be aware that it isn't as upscale or spacious inside as the 530e.

2022 vs. 2023 BMW 530e: What's the Difference?

For 2023, the 530e's infotainment system no longer comes with gesture controls. Additionally, the optional Executive package returns. Otherwise, there are no major differences between the 2022 and 2023 models.

2023 BMW 530e Versus the Competition

Bmw 530e vs. bmw 330e.

The BMW 330e is the 530e's plucky smaller sibling. Although it isn't as feature-packed, upscale or spacious inside as the 530e, the 330e has a more capacious trunk and a lower base MSRP. It's also more nimble, but the smaller Bimmer's handling prowess comes at the expense of ride quality. If you can live with a cozier, less-fancy interior and a firmer ride, the 330e might fit the bill as a more affordable alternative to the 530e.

Compare the 530e and 330e »

BMW 530e vs. Volvo S90 Recharge

The Volvo S90 Recharge is a strong contender in the luxury plug-in-hybrid-car segment. When compared to the 530e, the S90 Recharge provides stronger acceleration, more cargo room and more standard comfort and driver-assistance features. It's also slightly more fuel-efficient and has a longer all-electric driving range. It doesn't have the handling prowess of the BMW, though, and it also has a markedly higher starting price. The 530e also has a more user-friendly infotainment system.

530e Interior: Business Meets Pleasure

2023 530e interior quality.

The 2023 BMW 530e has a well-built, classy and driver-focused cabin, and there are lots of optional tech and comfort amenities to keep occupants happy. It isn't as opulent or flashy inside when compared to some competitors, though, and its interior design – though not totally outdated – feels a bit behind the times.

2023 530e Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation

The 530e has a robust and easy-to-operate infotainment system. The touch screen delivers bright, crisp graphics, and response times are snappy. The user interface is intuitive, though the sheer number of customization options and submenus can be daunting at first. With a little practice, however, the system becomes much easier to navigate. There are also a healthy number of physical knobs and buttons (including BMW's ubiquitous rotary controller on the center console) that make climate and audio adjustments a cinch.

  • Standard infotainment features:  a 12.3-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a 12-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth and two USB ports
  • Available infotainment features:  a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, wireless device charging and two extra USB ports
  • Additional standard features:  a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, push-button start, ambient LED interior lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener and a moonroof
  • Other available features:  remote start

For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay? and What Is Android Auto?

2023 530e Cargo Space

The 530e has unimpressive cargo space for a luxury plug-in-hybrid car. Due to the placement of the hybrid powertrain's battery, the trunk only affords 10 cubic feet of room (versus 14 cubic feet for the standard 5 Series ). That's enough to swallow a few carry-on duffel bags but little else. On the upside, the 530e's trunk has a low liftover height and wide opening for easy loading and unloading.

How Many People Does the 2023 530e Seat?

The 530e seats five people. The front seats provide plenty of support and comfort, and there are many adjustability options to help you find an ideal seating position. There's also plenty of head- and legroom. The rear seats are likewise comfortable, but tall passengers might feel cramped on long trips.

2023 530e and Child Car Seats

There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the 530e's rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-highest rating of Acceptable for its ease of use because the lower anchors can be difficult to maneuver around.

530e Performance: Spry and Smooth

2023 530e engine.

The 2023 BMW 530e comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor with a combined 288 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive can be added for $2,300. All models are equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 530e's powertrain provides sufficient oomph both from a standstill and at highway speeds. Launching off the line is especially thrilling thanks to the electric motor's near-instantaneous torque delivery. The transmission provides quick and smooth shifts, too.

Some segment rivals offer quicker zero-to-60-mph times, but the 530e is no slouch. It can do the dash in a BMW-estimated 5.7 seconds, and it has a top speed of 146 mph with summer tires (130 mph with all-season tires).

2023 530e Gas Mileage

The 530e gets average fuel economy for a luxury plug-in-hybrid car. It achieves an EPA-estimated 64 MPG-equivalent in combined city/highway driving in gas-electric mode and 26 mpg combined when operating on gas alone. Opting for all-wheel drive cuts into the BMW's fuel efficiency slightly: 62 MPGe combined with battery assistance and 25 mpg combined without electric aid.

The 530e's 12-kWh battery takes about 3.5 hours to charge using a 240-volt (Level 2) charging station or outlet. With a standard 120-volt outlet, the battery can reach a full charge overnight.

For more information, check out What Is MPGe?

2023 530e Ride and Handling

The 530e may prioritize comfort over handling prowess, but it's still plenty fun to take around curves. Steering is nicely weighted and balanced, road feel is good, and the suspension allows for both a smooth ride and dialed-in handling dynamics. The regenerative brakes feel remarkably natural, and they quickly and predictably bring the BMW to a halt.

2024 BMW 530e and 550e xDrive Configurator Is Live, Check Out Our Choice

Florin Amariei profile photo

  • Cape York Green metallic color because it reminded us of Dravit Gray and its great gold flakes that shone in the sunlight and transformed the look of the vehicle it was painted with;
  • Individual Merino leather in Copper Brown and Atlas Grey for a more refined interior look that's not too prone to stains nor too dark;
  • Individual fine-wood Finel. trim with an open-pored inlay that blends marvelously with the Merino leather color combination;
  • The Technology Plus Pack because it added the hand gesture control, the driving assistant "professional," the interior camera, the improved dashboard functionality, and the advanced head-up display;
  • The Comfort Plus Pack because it is what makes a BMW 5 Series feel like a real 5 Series with its automatic tailgate, four-zone climate control, keyless access, better front seats, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and heated and ventilated front seats;
  • The thermally insulated glass, panoramic roof, towbar, and sunshades for the rear passengers.

Car shows on TV and his father's Fiat Tempra may have been Florin's early influences, but nowadays he favors different things, like the power of an F-150 Raptor. He'll never be able to ignore the shape of a Ferrari though, especially a yellow one. Full profile

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
