Receiving rave reviews and sold-out theatres in New Zealand earlier this year, Bailey’s new show ponders the questions surrounding our current state of being, many of which we’re sure we’ve all asked ourselves over the past 18 months.

With questions like, ‘how did we get here?’, ‘how do we find our way through this?’ and ‘exactly who are we again?’, the British Comedy Award winner muses these through music, songs, and memories, and considers our changing priorities, the wonder of dogs, how little things can keep you on track, and rhapsodises on his new-found love of skydiving.

In a show that’s being coined ‘solid gold’, Bailey also recounts his own experiences of dealing with  isolation , ruminating the ‘sounds of lockdown’ which led to a greater appreciation of birdsong and perhaps led to the creation of music itself, and how our reliance on technology has inspired him to create dance remixes of video-calling ringtones, something I’m sure a few of us will be able to relate to.

Naming the show before COVID-19 even existed (what a time), the  En Route To Normal  show has become not just a funny, heart-warming mix of stories, music and history, but a personal mission to find our way through these strange times!

Garnering a huge following down under in his years of touring,  En Route To Normal  will be the seventh show that Bill has brought to Australia, delivered with the energy the multi-faceted entertainer is known for.

Bill Bailey  ‘En Route To Normal’ updated tour dates:

Costa Hall, Geelong – Sat 15 Oct 2022

Bill Bailey Announces En Route To Normal Australian Tour 2022

Following a thumbs-up from immigration, Bill Bailey returns to Australia with his brand new show En Route To Normal starting in Toowoomba on September 22 and taking him around the country for 16 shows. Bill performed this show with rave reviews and sold out theatres in New Zealand earlier this year while he was there filming his new television series Patriot Brains currently airing on SBS.

How did we get here? How do we find our way through this? And exactly who are we again? In Bill's new show, En Route To Normal, Bill ponders these and other questions that this moment in history has thrown up and tries to see a way through the strange unreality of our new world. With Bill naming the show before we'd even heard of Covid-19, En Route To Normal has become not just a funny, heart-warming mix of stories, music and history, but a personal mission to find our way through these strange times!

Tracing lines through chaotic moments in history, Bill seeks out parallels where human resilience and our ability to endure has got us through times of strife. Through music, songs, and memories, Bill considers our changing priorities, the wonder of dogs, how little things can keep you on track, and rhapsodises on his new-found love of skydiving. He recounts his own experiences of dealing with isolation, ruminating the 'sounds of lockdown' which led to a greater appreciation of birdsong and perhaps led to the creation of music itself, and how our reliance on technology has inspired Bill himself to create dance remixes of video-calling ringtones.

Last in Australiain 2018, the British Comedy Award winner is a frequent visitor to our shores, with a massive Australian fan base flocking to theatres to see the master in action. Irreverent and immensely talented, En Route To Normal will be the seventh show that Bill has brought down under, delivered with the energy the multi-faceted entertainer is known for.

Never one to slow down, Bill had the opportunity to fulfil some lifelong dreams when Covid put a halt to his relentless touring schedule. Most recently taking the dance floor by storm on the iconic reality series Strictly Come Dancing, Bill has also lent his voice to the animated film adaption of children's book Dragonkeeper due for release this year, and managed to find time to write a new book - Bill Bailey 's Remarkable Guide to Happiness, a collection of funny, meditative and thoughtful essays exploring the nature of happiness.

With his trademark blend of satire and surrealism, stories and dismantled jokes, crowd sing-alongs, weird instruments and musical showstoppers, don't miss this legendary comedian, musician and actor back on stage!

Arts & entertainment, design & style, travel & leisure, search concrete playground, bill bailey has postponed his australian tour until the end of 2022.

The beloved British comedian was set to tour the country this October and November, but has delayed his plans until next year instead.

Bill Bailey Has Postponed His Australian Tour Until the End of 2022

The past year and a half hasn't delivered many reasons to laugh. It hasn't seen many big-name international comedians hit our stages to try to get us giggling and guffawing, either. And, if you wanted to end 2021 by chucking at Bill Bailey, that isn't going to happen either.

Back in May , the British favourite announced that he was bringing his En Route to Normal tour to our shores this October and November, which would've marked three years since he last had the country in stitches back in 2018. But those plans have just changed due to Australia's COVID-19 restrictions, so you'll need to wait until September, October and November 2022 instead.

Known for everything from Have I Got News for You and QI to Spaced , Hot Fuzz and Skins — and Black Books , obviously — Bailey will be pondering some of life's big questions during his delayed En Route to Normal sets. And, while the pandemic is certain to get a mention, he actually named the show before lockdowns, social distancing and always knowing how many active cases are in your state became our current definition of normal.

Bailey will still kick off the tour in Queensland, before making his way — and taking his distinctive locks — to Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Plus, in some states, he won't just be sticking to capital cities.

Tickets for 2021 dates will be transferred over to their new 2022 equivalents.

Australian Boomers to play at Melbourne's John Cain Arena for first home games since Tokyo Olympics

Project Description

Bill bailey @ thebarton theatre, adelaide, october 12th 2022 (live review), review by colin reid, we arrived at the thebbie around 15 minutes before showtime to find a queue winding its way out of the front doors, down the street and around the corner and up danby street.  english comedian, actor and musician bill bailey is playing the first of two sold out nights back to back gigs.  bill has been in australia for over a month now and still has best part of a month to go on his current tour.  playing both the capital cities and the regional centres demand for tickets has been huge., i first saw bill on tv in “spaced” , an outrageously funny off beat uk sitcom, where he played simon pegg’s boss at the comic book store. next time i saw him was as manny in the equally wonderful ‘black books’ with dylan moran.  i remember literally crying with laughter in the episode where the two of them drink all of the expensive wine when house sitting.  despite knowing how funny he was i had never seen him live before.   “you are in for a treat, so funny, clever & talented there’s nothing he can’t do” friends told me before hand, “what a brilliant mind he has, he is the comedian of our times”.  could he live up to such high praise, bill enters the stage to huge applause. he bounds around the stage introducing us to the wide array of musical instruments that are arranged on almost every part of it. as well as various guitars including one that appears to be using a vintage bible for its body, lutes, a theremin and a hand-pan drum. ‘you may been wondering why bill has a bbq on stage’ he quips. the hand pan does ,for all intents and purposes, look just like a weber bbq. bill goes on to demonstrate why it makes so much more relaxing a sound than the bagpipes do. thankfully he doesn’t have a set of bagpipes with him, he starts with a moment to reflect on the recent loss of a great british figure. as all our minds go towards the queen and wondering whether bill is a monarchist or a republican he trips up our thought pattern by saying it is boris johnson.  it is very clear that bill has no love lost for either boris or his successor liz truss who he describes as the political equivalent to a dementor from harry potter.  after both have suffered a scathing array of observations bill informs us that he isn’t saying any of this in a bad way  he notes that australian politicians aren’t much better but he trends a somewhat neutral line between the parties., the musical virtuosity that bill possesses is stunning, perhaps matched only by his capacity of languages and accents.  throughout the night he drops into german, french and dutch. he has perfect pitch and such great improvisation, at one point taking musical request from the audience for songs to turn into ragtime 1920s re-arrangements.  there is a certain gentle whimsy about the evening. something very english but which universally translates.  he is so quick witted and has the ability to seamlessly transfer between comic stories and musical repartee, even when the routine suddenly goes in a different direction when asking the crowd for examples of feral creatures someone shouts “poms” back at him. throughout the show the material references back onto itself weaving strands from earlier parts of the night into itself. it is so well written and delivered. another thing that stands out from his act is the he has no use for the swearing that so many comedians resort to in their dumbed down routines that tell their dumbed down audiences when to laugh.  other than one instance of “shit” as part of the samuel peeps twitter routine bill’s show is completely clean., if you’ve seen bill before or watched any of the shows or snippets of his stand up on youtube or elsewhere you will recognise some of his usual targets. coldplay, gwyneth paltrow and the west country dialect of england all get a going over but as bill says, none of it is meant in a bad way., twice during the show bill is joined on stage by south australian soprano and principal artist at state opera of south australia desiree frahn .  she is simply stunning and all the ladies in the audience wanted that amazing dress with pockets. as well as having an incredible voice she appears to have great comic timing and visual comedy which makes her the perfect foil to bill.  it seems like bill is joined by a different musical guest where he plays, we in the adelaide and surrounding areas where very lucky to get desiree., there are multiple mentions of surviving covid lockdowns, bizarre isolation behaviour, explicable 3am internet purchases, skype tv appearances and pigeons as well as anecdotes, such as the skydiving one, that demonstrate bill’s love for australia.  we can all relate to the covid experience to some degree and all appreciate this love for australia., bill moves between the instruments throughout the night. each are given a workout that either demonstrate is great talent for music or comic silliness or both. i particularly liked him playing the theremin with his head and the switch on his ‘bible’ guitar that let him play in either the style of the old or new testaments., he performed way over the scheduled end of the show and came back for 2 encores.  there was a sense and feeling that he was having as much fun performing as we were having watching him and that he would keep going for as long as he possibly could., sadly the night had to finish. bill graciously signing material for people in the front rows to great applause from the rest of us.  he’s just wonderful yes there truly appears to be no end to his talents, watching on tv somehow doesn’t do him justice. you need to see him live to fully appreciate it.  this was absolutely the best comedy show i’ve been too, if thursday night was sold out i would have considered going again, what a talented man you are bill bailey, empire theatre, toowoomba, qld   thu 22 sep 2022 the events centre, Bill Bailey's Australian Adventure sees the comedian having fun for his new Channel 4 series.

Bill Bailey's Australian Adventure sees the comedian and Strictly Come Dancing winner explore the region of Western Australia for a four-part travel series — and he’s blown away by the sheer size of the place!

"If you think you know Australia then think again because there’s an even wilder weirder and more wonderful version and it’s in the west," says Bill, 58. "There’s so much space here. That means Western Australians have access to nature like nowhere else on earth!"

So here's everything you need to know about the Channel 4 series Bill Bailey's Australian Adventure...

Bill Bailey ends up in all sorts of places in Western Australia.

Bill Bailey's Australian Adventure release date

Bill Bailey's Australian Adventure is a four-part series that starts on Channel 4 on Sunday, November 12 at 9 pm, with episodes running weekly at the same time through November 2023 and early December.

When there's an international air date for the series we'll advise here.

Is there a trailer for Bill Bailey's Australian Adventure?

Channel 4 hasn't released a trailer yet for Bill Bailey's Australian Adventure , but we'll post it here if one arrives, so do check back.

Exclusive interview: Bill Bailey on his new Australian Adventure series

So, what inspired this tour of Western Australia, Bill?  Bill Bailey says: "I’ve been to Australia many times over the years, but I don’t know the West that well. Plus, I wanted to swim with a whale shark, but I’ve always been there at the wrong time of year [the whale shark season generally runs from mid-March to August]. Doing this series meant I could finally do what I’ve been dreaming about for years."

And did swimming with a whale shark off the Ningaloo Coast live up to your expectations?   Bill says: "It was amazing, even more extraordinary than I imagined. The one I saw was just an adolescent, but it was still more than 20ft long and had a huge broad head. I was totally transfixed by this creature."

Any other sea life encounters during this experience?  Bill explains: "You have to accept there are sharks everywhere and, as we got out of the water, a giant hammerhead shark swam past the boat. It was as big as the whale shark we’d just seen; it was a monster! When you ask the Aussie crew if a shark is alright around humans and they reply, ‘Erm, yeah…’, then you know they’re dangerous!"

What other moments from your adventure particularly stand out? Bill says: "Meeting some of the country’s indigenous people was a revelation. Learning about their experiences, their knowledge of the land, their love for the country and their wonderful sense of humour was one of my favourite things. I had such a range of fascinating experiences, from seeing how a pearl farm works to playing the keytar solo with Perth heavy-metal band Voyager [who finished ninth place in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest with the song Promise]. I look back now and think, ‘Wow, I did all that!'"

You say you like the eccentricity of Western Australia – what was the strangest place or thing you came across?   Bill reveals: "Gnomesville [in The Ferguson Valley] – what a totally bizarre place! It started out when someone jokingly put a broken gnome in their front garden with a sign on it saying, ‘Please fix me’. Someone anonymously fixed the gnome, word got out, and loads of people brought their gnomes to be fixed. Then more people brought their gnomes to keep the other gnomes company! Now, there are literally thousands of garden gnomes spread out in this forest and it’s on the map as ‘Gnomesville’. It’s a real tourist attraction."

Is it true you were stalked by an emu at one point?! Bill says: "Yes, I thought I was following it and then realised it was following me! They’re big animals with a fearsome beak and a mischievous look, and this one emu thought I had some food and kept following me. Just before it happened, someone posted an Instagram video of a bloke being chased by an emu that was really going for him, so I had that in my mind. It was a bit unnerving!"

Oh dear! Were you recognised much in Oz during filming?  Bill says: "Yes, quite a bit. The most extraordinary time was when we were in a remote Aboriginal community in the furthest northern part of Western Australia. We had a wonderful First Nations guide and were having a chat when she said, ‘I know you from somewhere, have you been in any films?’ I mentioned [2010 fantasy comedy] Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, and she said, ‘That’s my favourite film! We watch it all the time. You’re Farmer MacReadie, aren’t you?’ That was unexpected!"

Bill Bailey tells us his stand out moments during his tour of Western Australia.

Bill Bailey's Australian Adventure episode guide

Here's our guide to all four episodes of Bill Bailey's Australian Adventure, which we'll be updating weekly...

Episode 1: Sunday, November 12 Bill is on Western Australia’s south coast, and his first stop is Lucky Bay, voted the world’s best beach. It’s even scientifically proven to have the whitest sand! He also gets a sense of the state’s scale and biodiversity at the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk, before visiting the old whaling town of Albany and the busy port of Esperance, where he takes control of a brand new £10 million tug! Meanwhile, Bill also takes to the stage with The Albany Shantymen and tries paddleboarding on a deserted beach with ex-Australian NBA star Luc Longley, who played for the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. And by the end of the first episode, Bill is thinking of upping sticks! "I’m struck by the free-spirited nature of Western Australians," Bill says. "I might move here and become a local eccentric. I might play the piano in a local bar or join a Police tribute act,’ he laughs. ‘I’d be quite happy with that!"

Bill meets ex-Australian NBA star Luc Longley.

Episode 2: Sunday November 19 Bill's in awe when he swims with a 20ft whale shark off the Ningaloo coast. 'Swimming with a whale shark has been on my list of things to do for many years and I thought I might finally get to do this thing I’ve been dreaming about for years,’ he admits. "It was amazing. They’re so dynamic in the water" What the gentle giant of the ocean made of Bill’s whale shark-patterned swimming attire remains a mystery, but it was Bill who had the biggest shock while achieving his life’s dream. "As we got out of the water a giant oceanic hammerhead shark swam past,’ he says. It was as big as the whale shark, it was a monster!" As Bill travels around Western Australia’s Ningaloo coastline, he explores the vast outback. He comes across the famous limestone formations called The Pinnacles and encounters pink lakes and wild emus. "One emu kept following me," recalls Bill. "Just before that somebody posted a video on Instagram of a bloke being chased by an emu and the thing was really going for him, so I had that in my mind. It was a bit unnerving."

Whale shark.

Episode 3: Sunday November 26 When comedian Bill Bailey set out to explore Western Australia he was fully prepared for it to be ‘wilder, weirder and even more wonderful’, than the rest of the country. But in this third episode of his travelogue, we see that even he wasn’t prepared for Gnomesville, a place jam-packed full of garden gnomes! "Gnomesville, what a totally bizarre place,’ he says. "This started out when someone jokingly put a broken gnome in their front garden with a sign on it saying ‘please fix me’. Someone anonymously fixed the gnome then word got out and loads of people brought their gnomes to be fixed. Then more people brought their gnomes to keep the other gnomes company. Now there are literally thousands of garden gnomes. It’s a tourist attraction. We met a school trip. One of the kids was really disappointed. He said “I thought it would be an actual town full of gnomes”. It was hilarious!" Bill also explores Western Australia’s state capital Perth, goes truffle hunting with a Labrador called Max and enjoys a jamming session with the band Voyager, who were a hit in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.  "I had a blast with Voyager," says Bill. "I loved playing the keytar solo with the band. It was one of the highlights of the trip."

Episode 4: Sunday December 3 As Bill Bailey’s journey around Western Australia comes to a close, the comic heads north to explore the industrial hub of Port Hedland and the tropical paradise of Broome. "It’s a land festooned with natural treasures, whether its precious metals, the wonders of bygone eras, fine jewels or exquisite wildlife," he says. "It’s intoxicatingly beautiful. It’s also incredibly old, and Bill finds himself walking in the footsteps of 135 million-year-old dinosaurs, following their footprints along the coastline of Gantheaume Point." He also spends a night under the stars with Australian astronomer Greg Quicke, known as Space Gandalf, and hunts for pearls in a working pearl farm where some of the jewellery sells for a staggering £45,000. "It’s not really my sort of thing" he says. "But fishing for sunken treasure in a tropical paradise. Not a bad day in the office." As Bill’s 5,000-kilometre journey finally ends, after driving the equivalent of London to Baghdad, he reflects on all the incredible experiences he’s had.  "I’m a wreck," he admits. "But I’ve got some amazing memories to take away. Sights, sounds, smells and tastes that will be etched on my memory forever. It’s been an epic road trip. What an extraordinary place."
