The Bad World Tour is the first worldwide concert tour by Michael Jackson . It was launched in support of the artist's seventh studio album, Bad (1987) and lasted sixteen months, spanning from September 12, 1987 until January 27, 1989. The shows were sponsored by Pepsi .

The tour became the second highest grossing tour of the decade, as well as one of the most attended tours in history. As announced by Jackson himself during the last show of the tour, these were initially meant to be his last performances in history. However, the Bad World Tour was eventually followed by the Dangerous World Tour and HIStory World Tour .

For the longest time, while already releasing hit solo albums, Michael still toured with the Jacksons . At a December 1984 show of the Victory Tour , Jackson announced his departure from the group, stating it was the final show he was gonna play with them.

On June 29, 1987, Michael's manager, Frank DiLeo announced the singer was going to embark on his first solo concert tour. The shows would be sponsored by Pepsi, a company which previously got Jackson in hospital after a tragic pyrotechnics accident a few years prior.

The tour was originally going to finish in Tokyo, but Jackson suffered from swollen vocal cords after the first of six concerts in Los Angeles in November 1988. The remaining five shows were then rescheduled for January 1989. However, due to this decision, Greg Phillinganes had to leave the band in early January, as his schedule was busy as he was set to tour with Eric Clapton. Instead, John Barnes would be hired to take Phillinganes' place. With the tour ending, Michael sought medical care for vocal-chord nodules.

On September 18, 2012, over two decades after the show took place, a DVD of the July 16, 1988 show at the Wembley Stadium was released as a part of the Bad 25 promo and box set. Additionally, the deluxe edition of Bad 25 includes audio from the show on the third disc as well. The full film was later uploaded to the official Michael Jackson YouTube channel.

• On this tour, Jackson performed " Thriller " live for the first time.
• During the concert in Brisbane on November 28, 1987, Stevie Wonder made a guest appearance during the song " Bad ."
• The set list would be changed around for shows in the European second leg, performing " Human Nature " & " Smooth Criminal " after " Rock with You ".
• " The Way You Make Me Feel " was sometimes taken out of the set list for time constraints or other unknown reasons, so " Man in the Mirror " was performed in the " Bad " jacket, instead of classic "The Way You Make Me Feel" blue shirt. During other shows, both "Man in the Mirror" and "The Way You Make Me Feel" were removed, leaving Jackson ending the show with "Bad", as he'd done in the first leg.
• During the last 1989 Los Angeles show Michael wore a white shirt for "The Way You Make Me Feel" instead of a blue one.
• Jackson would only wear the black shirt for the first show and only time wear he would wear it. He would not wear it again due to the costume & lighting obscuring his dancing.

Bad Cinderella premiered in London in 2021; at the time, the show was simply titled Cinderella . Its planned 2020 debut was postponed amid the pandemic, and the show ultimately ran in London's West End for a year. A four-star review on London Theatre reads, "[The] grunge-punk princess is more Olivia Rodrigo than Disney... She's a new kind of princess, one that little girls and big girls alike could all use."

The review also reads, of Lloyd Webber's songs, "I defy you to leave the theatre without humming any of them. Highlights include 'Only You, Lonely You,' 'Bad Cinderella,' and 'Cinderella's Soliloquy,' but there's not a dud in the bunch and the orchestrations soar, particularly at the ball. David Zippel's clever lyrics offer a surprising rhyme at every turn."

What is Andrew Lloyd Webber most known for?

Lloyd Webber is one of the most celebrated modern theatre composers. His The Phantom of the Opera is the longest-running Broadway show in history, and his other musicals, including Cats , Jesus Christ Superstar , and Sunset Boulevard , are all modern classics. For the Bad Cinderella musical, he teamed up with lyricist Zippel and bookwriter Emerald Fennell, a renowned writer herself who won an Oscar for writing the film Promising Young Woman . She's also written for Killing Eve and acted on The Crown .

What is Bad Cinderella about?

The Bad Cinderella musical is set in Belleville, a kingdom that values beauty above all. That makes Cinderella — a brash, goth, unruly maid — the town outcast. Her one friend is Sebastian, the awkward younger brother of Prince Charming, and neither he nor Cinderella realize their feelings for the other are mutual. Cinderella sets out to become beautiful to win him over, with the help of a plastic-surgery "godmother" — but as the fairytale goes, the transformation only lasts until midnight. Afterward, she's left to discover that inner beauty is what really matters.

What age is Bad Cinderella the musical suitable for?

Bad Cinderella is recommended for ages 10 and up. The musical contains some strong language.

March 27, 1985 :  Michael attends the futuristic musical “Starlight Express” in London and meets the cast backstage.

March 28, 1985 :  Michael attends the unveiling of his wax statue at Madame Tussaud’s wax museum in London. 8000 fans gather to get a glimpse of their hero.

March 29, 1985 :  Michael leaves the Montcalm Hotel in London to visit the Marylebone Police Station to thank them for their service where he is treated to a police drill and presented with a police badge and helmet.

Michael attends an evening reception and party in his honour in London where CBS Records present him with an 8X Platinum wall-mounted plaque.

June 28 , 1985  : Michael and Elizabeth Taylor attend Liza Minelli’s “Comeback” concert tour at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa.

July 4, 1985 :  Michael attends the annual 4th of July picnic & barbecue at the Skywalker Ranch, George Lucas’s Estate, located in a secluded, yet open area near Nicasio, California, in Marin County.

October 19, 1985  : Michael visits Princess Margaret’s Children Hospital in Perth. Later he is presented with the City’s Keys by Mayor Michael Agapitos.

Michael appears live on Australian TV Telethon with Peter Waltham & Molly Meldrum.

October 27, 1985 :  LaToya performs “Baby Sister” during the 16th annual World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, Japan aka the Yamaha Music Festiva . “Baby Sister is the 1st single from LaToya’s ‘s 4th studio album “Imagination” released in 1986. Janet supports LaToya by performing background vocals on her song during the performance. Michael also supports LaToya through a video taped with her earlier this month at Hayvenhurst.

December 25 , 1985  : Michael and Elizabeth Taylor visit Hollywood Park together.

January 27, 1986 : Michael arrives half-way through the American Music Awards ceremony in company of Elizabeth Taylor where he, Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and Ken Kragen are presented with awards for “We Are The World”. Katherine, LaToya, Rebbie & Janet also attend the ceremony (Janet makes her first public appearance with her new boyfriend Rene Elizondo Jr). For the show’s conclusion, Michael joins many celebrities including Diana Ross, Janet & LaToya to sing “We Are The World”.

February 2, 1986 :  Michael gives a 5 minutes interview about Quincy Jones for CBS 60 minutes programme.

February 25, 1986 : Michael, Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones & Stevie attend the Grammy Awards where “We Are The World” wins four awards.

April 23, 1986 :  For the second time, Michael accompanies Elizabeth Taylor to the opening of the Hollywood Park Race Track in Inglewood.

May 1986 :  Michael, Elizabeth, Lionel Richie & Mikhail Baryshnikov attend the LA Bullet Opening Night party in Los Angeles.

Michael attends Jermaine’s concert in Los Angeles with Janet & LaToya. He is disguised as “Uncle Willy”.

May 6, 1986 :  Michael attends a press conference at New York ’s Red Parrot where Pepsi announces a new contract for a reported $15 million and later he receives a Guinness Book of World Records plaque for having received the largest fee ever for a product endorsement.

May 10, 1986 :  Michael & Emmanuel attend the Sunday matinee of Broadway’s Big Deal

May 13, 1986 :  On their last evening in New York , Michael & Emmanuel watch The Little Shop Of Horrors.

March 1, 1988 : In NYC, Michael attends a press conference arranged by Pepsi to preview “The Chase” a new Pepsi commercials featuring Michael (a four part story). Michael also presents UNCF’s President and CEO, Christopher Edley a check for 600,000 dollars, the entire grossings from his private sold-out benefit concert held at Madison Square Garden.

March 2, 1988 :  At the 30th Grammy Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York , Michael performs  The Way You Make Me Feel & Man In The Mirror .

Live at Wembley July 16, 1988 is a live concert CD/DVD by American recording artist Michael Jackson released on September 18, 2012. It was included with the Bad 25 reissue, as well as by itself. This particular concert took place on July 16, 1988, at Wembley Stadium in Wembley, London, to a sold-out crowd of 72,000, which included Diana, Princess of Wales and Charles, Prince of Wales. The DVD also includes “The Way You Make Me Feel”, from July 15 (the song was not performed on July 16 due to a late start of the show) and “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, and “Bad”, performed on September 26, 1987, in Yokohama, Japan. The Bad 25 deluxe package also contains a CD of the audio from the July 16 concert as well, with audio edited down to 80 minutes from the original two hours.

Bad Bunny Electrifies NYC: 5 Standout Moments from His Most Wanted Tour

An equestrian entrance, a jigsaw-like stage, and over two hours of hits: here are the most memorable moments from his Barclays Center performance on Thursday night.

On Thursday night (April 11), the Barclays Center in New York City was electrified by the presence of Bad Bunny . The arena, filled to its 19,000-person capacity, buzzed with anticipation as the Puerto Rican superstar kicked off the first show of his three-night stint in the city.

“New York has been very important in my career, where dreams come true,” Benito told his fans in his native Spanish during the performance. “Being on the tour feels really amazing, going to each place and seeing it, all the cities, but New York, it’s something else. It feels more amazing than usual. Seeing all those PR and DR flags makes it even more special. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being here, it means a lot to me.”

Bad Bunny — who wore Prada sunglasses, a velour suit, and a gold cross necklace — delivered a dynamic performance that was an amalgamation of music and spectacle. It included a grand orchestra, an equestrian entrance, a surprise appearance by Bryant Myers to perform “Seda,” a jigsaw-like stage that transformed into the Brooklyn Bridge, and, of course, a repertoire of his biggest hits. This was part of his Most Wanted Tour — in support of his Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana album — which kicked off on Feb. 21 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Live Nation-promoted tour is halfway through its schedule, with forthcoming performances in cities including Austin, Texas (Apr. 26-27), Atlanta, Ga. (May 14-15), and Miami, Fla. (May 24-26). According to Billboard Boxscore, the tour has already been a commercial success, grossing $84.2M and selling 282K tickets over its first 18 shows. It has consistently sold out venues, demonstrating Bad Bunny’s continued widespread appeal.

Here are five standout moments from the first night of Bad Bunny’s Most Wanted Tour at the Barclays Center:

The Grandeur of an Orchestra

Bad Bunny’s grand entrance was enhanced by the stirring symphonic sounds of a grand orchestra. Setting a triumphant tone reminiscent of a championship bout or a cinematic Rocky Balboa moment, the orchestra filled the arena with melodious harmony for 10 minutes as the show commenced at 9:30 p.m. Adding to the immersive experience, orchestra members made surprise appearances throughout the audience, accompanying Bad Bunny’s rhythms, particularly during the opening numbers, “Nadie Sabe” and “Monaco.”

An Equestrian Entrance

The concert’s midway moment was marked by Bad Bunny’s dramatic arrival on a horse , embodying a masked cowboy in a fuschia outfit with fringes. Despite previous criticism from PETA, the superstar displayed gentleness towards the horse, who was also accompanied by a trainer. As arguably the first reggaetón artist to incorporate a horse into his act, he joins the ranks of regional Mexican icons like Joan Sebastian, Vicente Fernández, and Pepe Aguilar, who uphold this tradition.

Playing 'Amorfoda' on a Piano Upside Down

Displaying his entertainment abilities in unconventional ways, Bad Bunny played the first keys of “Amorfoda” on the piano — notably, upside down atop the instrument — to the astonishment of the audience. He also delivered a soulful rendition of “un x100to” accompanied solely by the piano, marking a poignant moment in the two-and-a-half-hour concert.

Surprise Guest Performance by Bryant Myers

The concert was further enlivened by a surprise performance from Bryant Myers, who joined Bunny on stage to perform “Seda” from Bunny’s latest album, Nadie Sabe . Their collaboration stretches back to 2017 with the hit “Pa Ti.” Previously, Myers had also made a surprise appearance at BB’s Los Angeles show in March. Their joy in their longstanding musical partnership was evident in their performances.

A Jigsaw-Like Stage Morphing into the Brooklyn Bridge

The stage was a dynamic piece of artwork, constantly shifting forms throughout the concert. With two stages positioned at opposite ends of the arena, and a bridge-like catwalk in between, the stage at one point transformed into an impressive replica of the Brooklyn Bridge, made possible by intricate light work. This captivating visual element added a unique dimension to the concert experience.

Bad Bunny could do no wrong, as the fans loved him and were thrilled to be in his presence. Still, he stuck the landing by immediately performing the 2023 smash “Monaco,” the next sequential track on Nadie . The Grammy winner ripped through more of his fan-favorite records from his latest LP in order, namely “Fina,” “Hibiki,” and “Mr. October” before skipping ahead to “Mercedes Carota.”

Throughout all of this, he was joined onstage by dancers, who performed sharp choreography while dressed in all Black. The women sported cheeky bottoms and sleeveless tops, which likely made the men in the building conflicted about whether to pay attention to them or Benito’s dynamic performance.

Another highlight of the show was a bridge that descended from the ceiling and, upon Bad Bunny stepping onto it, rose and spun around allowing the “King Of Latin Trap” to get a bird’s eye view of his raucous fanbase. Later, lights dropped down from the ceiling and surrounded the bridge in a reimagined pattern of the Brooklyn Bridge; Benito has a lot of love for New York and showed it with this production decision.

All in all, it was an energetic evening at the Barclays Center. Bad Bunny did not disappoint any of his fans and offered a reminder of how many salient tracks he has delivered throughout his career. Just when it seems like he has hit a peak, he shows he’s got more in the tuck, much like his latest album Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va A Pasar Mañana boasting the smash hit “Monaco.” And judging by the reactions on Friday evening, his fans are more than happy to turn whatever he releases next to a hit that could end up in his canon alongside his biggest songs.

Bad Bunny’s ‘Most Wanted’ Tour Lights Up New York City

Under the cover of night on April 12, performing a total of 37 songs, not including the orchestra that introduced him at the top of the night before morphing musically into “Nadie Sabe,” Bad Bunny showed fans at the Barclays Center in attendance for his ‘Most Wanted’ Tour that he isn’t going anywhere.

From opening the show with a full-string orchestra who performed for about 15 minutes of stage time the dynamic backup dancers, Bad Bunny really put on one western and trap inspired show. At one, he exited the stage only to re-enter again on horseback. And yes, it was a real horse.

The first act consisted of songs mostly from his latest LP ‘Nadie sabe lo sue va a passer manana.’ Bad Bunny changed it up by going back to his trap roots with “Tu No Metes Cabra,” which was released in 2017, followed by “Pa Ti” and “No Te Hagas.” He made sure to greet just about every section of the Barclays Center and accomplished that with a floating catwalk in the center of the arena that slowly spun around the venue. In the final act, Bad Bunny transported fans to the songs that have taken the world by storm, such as his 2023 single with Grupo Frontera, “Un x100to” as well as megahits from 2020’s  YHLQMDLG  (“Safaera” and “Yo Perreo Sola”) and 2022’s  Un Verano Sin Ti  (“Efecto” and “Me Porto Bonito”).

While some fans may have been disappointed to not hear their favourite song, the show ended on a strong note with “Efecto” and “Me Porto Bonito” — both songs whipped fans into a frenzy that felt worth the wait. Bunny closed the show with “WHERE SHE GOES” — and confetti. 

And the crowd left with the sense they had just seen a true international superstar.

My apologies to Evilene, the wicked witch in “The Wiz,” who famously demands in song that her henchmen bring her “no bad news.”

Two hours and 30 minutes, with one intermission. At the Marquis Theatre, 210 W. 46th Street.

Because I must unfortunately report that the new revival of that musical, which opened Wednesday night at the Marquis Theatre, is not the dazzler that fans have waited so long for. Quite the contrary.

And that’s bad news, indeed.

Despite the cozy feeling of being reunited with beloved material 40 years after it was last on Broadway, director Schele Williams’ production is deflatingly flimsy and lackluster. Clumsily staged, it’s a Wiz-sper of what it should be.

Still, the Emerald City offers occasional shimmers of hope.

The all-black riff on L. Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz,” which was made into a 1978 movie starring Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, is chockablock with infectious tunes, such as “Ease On Down The Road” and “Home,” and is sometimes rescued here by the voices of its talented cast.

Then — I’ll get you my pretty! — we spot the villain that’s lurking behind them: ugly CGI backdrops that look like Windows XP screensavers. Surely, the creative team can do better than that. 

If they only had more than practicality on the brain! This “Wiz” arrives in New York via a months-long national tour. It’s obviously been built to easily fit into a wide array of venues around the country. 

But Hannah Beachler’s sets are so cheap and unremarkable, and Daniel Brodie’s artificial-intelligence-style projections so prominent, that the overwhelming vibe is that we and the tour are actually still stuck in Kansas. We’re certainly not on Broadway.

Such cut corners are hard to stomach in a tale of a lush, magical land over a rainbow, especially when another take on “Oz” — “Wicked” — remains a visual wow, 20 years later and only four blocks away.

Yes, “The Wiz” should ease on down the road — but with boundless creativity and awe.

For the two of you who don’t know, it’s the old story of Dorothy (Nichelle Lewis), a Kansas farmgirl who’s whisked by a tornado to the Land of Oz, with a new — or, rather, 49-year-old — twist.

In the 1970s, composer Charlie Smalls brought Motown-style music — the sort you don’t just hear, but feel from head to toe — to Munchkinland.

En route to get help from the Wizard (Wayne Brady), Dorothy meets the Scarecrow (Avery Wilson), Tinman (Phillip Johnson Richardson) and Lion (Kyle Ramar Freeman), who all have unique struggles of their own. 

Their songs are fabulous. The quartet doesn’t follow the Yellow Brick Road, they “Ease On Down” it. The Tinman’s “If I Only Had A Heart” becomes “Slide Some Oil To Me.” And “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” gets an altogether differently poignant counterpart in “Home.”

Richardson, as that poor rusty bucket of bolts, does best with writer Amber Ruffin’s newly added, funny jokes. And his number is the most energizing of the three supportive Ozians, likable though the others are. 

They’re tormented by the powerful Evilene, sung with vigor by Melody A. Betts, who gets this “Wiz”’s closest thing to a showstopper in “Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News.”

Brady, cameo-style, plays the Wizard with a Center Square personality. And Deborah Cox croons a lovely, maternal rendition of “Believe in Yourself” as Glinda.

Then, in a wildly rushed ending that gives zero closure, Lewis nicely sings “Home.”

It’s too bad that elsewhere in the musical, her Dorothy tends to let the wackier, flashier roles take over, whenever she’s not belting downstage center. This staging’s biggest flaw, actually, is forgetting that the show is more than just a bopping playlist — it’s the story of a scared girl who’s lost and discovering what matters most in her life.

But a lot has fallen to the wayside here. Not much is distinctive about this “Wiz” besides a memorable start of Act 2, during an extended dance called “Emerald City.”

It’s a modern nightclub sequence that’s a lively breath of fresh air. Finally, the show has been given a contemporary context beyond 3D images ripped from our scariest nightmares.

Before and after that, though, Jaquel Knight’s choreography is underwhelming and lacks theatricality and crispness. It doesn’t fill the stage, so much as clutter it.

For example, Ozian guards flank the four friends during “Ease On Down The Road,” marching and awkwardly moving their staffs not quite in unison. Their cumbersome decoration makes the spirited trip down the road bumpier than need be.

Like so much of this hit-and-miss production.

“The Wiz” ideally should have audiences proclaiming, “There’s no place like Broadway!” at the end.

Alas, back on W. 46th St. at 10:30 p.m., I headed to the train thinking, “There’s no place like home.”
