Aqua mekong wiki.

In November 2016, Aqua Expeditions announced two female-only themed cruises for 2017 - on the ships Aria Amazon and Aqua Mekong. Aqua Mekong's cruise (January 17-20, 2017) was a 3-day itinerary from Phnom Penh Cambodia . The "women-only cruising" experience featured a live Khmer Apsara dance performance onboard, tour of Vipassana Dhura Mandala (Udong Pagoda) meditation center, bike ride through rice paddies, visits to Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, Cambodia's National Museum, onboard enrichment (guide presentations, cooking classes), also culinary activities ashore (chef-guided visits to local food markets). Deals were also inclusive of a 60-min complimentary spa massage.

Like the sisterships  Aria Amazon (2010)  and  Aqua Nera (2020) , Aria Mekong's design, the small number of passenger accommodations, amenities and all-inclusive deals classified the vessel as "houseboat". These houseboats were constructed at Hai Minh Shipyard in  Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) Vietnam .

Next YouTube video shows the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship construction (time-lapse).

  • Review conclusion

The Aqua Mekong is one of the worlds most luxurious river cruise ships. It is a small vessel with a genuine sense of exclusivity. Perhaps that’s most evident in Aqua Mekong’s unrivalled destination experiences. Sailing between Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, guests are treated to curated shore excursions which are better than any others on the Mekong River. This Aqua Mekong review explains it all.

On board there is bespoke service, not to mention an excellent restaurant as well as an elegant bar. What’s more, the rooms are all river view suites.

However, there are things worth knowing about a river cruise on Aqua Mekong. For instance, unlike larger vessels there are set dining times. On the other hand its intimate size means it can explore the Mekong River in a way others can’t.

  • Unrivalled shore excursions.
  • Sense of exclusivity.
  • Great food.
  • Set dining times.

The Aqua Mekong deck plan is easy to get around. There are a total of 3 passenger decks, the highest of which is deck 3.

  • Reception : Deck 2
  • Accommodation : Decks 1 to 2
  • Main dining room : Deck 2
  • Theatre : Deck 3
  • Observation lounge : Deck 3

The crew quaters are found on deck 0.

Aqua Mekong is a river cruise ship belonging to Aqua Expeditions . The vessel was designed by Saigon-based Studio Noor and built in Vietnam in 2014.

The Aqua Mekong bar in the Observation Lounge.

The Aqua Mekong is 61.5 m. / 205 ft. long with three passenger decks and room for a maximum of 40 guests (double occupancy), so it never feels crowded.

Indeed, the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship feels like an exclusive residence thanks to fine design elements like hand-made lacquered wall panels, locally sourced silk fabrics and oriental objet d’art.

Object d'art from Vietnam and Cambodia.

The residential feel continues with spacious suites as well as a private cinema. Aqua Mekong also has a gourmet restaurant, an observation lounge, a cocktail lounge, a resort-style sun deck, an infinity plunge-pool and a gym.

Dining is a highlight of any river cruise on Aqua Mekong. Indeed, the seasonal menus are crafted by Michelin-starred chef David Thompson.

The food is regionally inspired, drawing heavily on the repertoire of tastes from Vietnam and Cambodia. What’s more, each dish is made with peak-season produce which comes directly from the Mekong River delta and surrounding region.

The Dining Room on the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship.

There is just one indoor restaurant on Aqua Mekong. It is called the Dining Room and has panoramic views across the stern. The sophisticated decor reflects the Vietnamese spirit of Aqua Mekong, with a hint of Paris-chic.

The menu in the Dining Room changes daily. On my review voyage there was an exceptional Vietnamese Watercress Soup as well as delicious BBQ Duck with Hoisin Sauce.

Deep Fried Sea Bass with Three Flavoured Sauce.

However, local fish was often the star of the dinner table. Indeed, the Deep-Fried Sea Bass with Three Flavoured Sauce was spectacular. So too was the Red Snapper with Lemon & Celery.

Desserts were somewhat less inspired, though it has to be said the Orange & Almond Cake with Toasted Almonds & Cream was delectable.

At least once per voyage there is also a BBQ dinner on the outdoor observation deck (weather permitting).

It’s worth noting that there are set dining times for breakfast, lunch and dinner. These are posted in the Daily Agenda news sheet.

The shore excursions on Aqua Mekong are carefully curated explorations designed to immerse you in the local culture. While the choice of excursions is limited, each one guarantees a unique and memorable experience.

A skif speeding away from the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship.

There are typically four excursions each day; two in the morning and two in the afternoon. These are described in detail during a briefing the night before. The excursions can include river trips on Aqua Mekong’s own skiffs, visits to local villages, bikes rides through rice fields, kayaking and chef’s market tours, just to name a few.

On my review voyage I saw a community lion dance in a small riverside village. Not to mention riding a rickshaw to the food markets in Chau Doc city. It was all very exotic, and a world away from the typical tourist experience. In fact, I think the shore excursions on Aqua Mekong achieve that rarest of travel experiences – they truly immerse you in local culture and let you experience a world far from the every day.

There are just 20 rooms on the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship and all of them are suites. The decor exudes minimalist Asiatic elegance with hardwood interiors and lacquered finishes. Each suite has a full river view, but it’s worth noting that only some have balconies.

I stayed in a Non-balcony Suite on my Aqua Mekong review voyage. Floor-to-ceiling glass ensured uninterrupted views of the river. There were chaise lounges for admiring the view as well as a single armchair. What’s more, there was a luxurious bathroom with dual-vanity and rain water shower.

A Non-balcony Suites on the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship.

The Balcony Suites are almost identical to the Non-Balcony Suites, though the internal space is somewhat smaller. That said, I think the Balcony Suites are a better option.

A Balcony Suite on the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship.

For those who like more space there are also One-bedroom Suites. Although it’s worth noting these are actually interconnecting Balcony and Non-balcony Suites where the non-balcony side is converted into a living room.

Editors tip: There are no televisions in any of the suites on board. However, movies are available in the Private Cinema .

Every suite on Aqua Mekong has an attendant who services the room three times each day, it’s a real treat. Another treat is the free laundry service; your clothes will be freshly laundered and pressed, then returned each afternoon.

Nightlife on Aqua Mekong is mostly in the Observation Lounge & Bar . On my review voyage it was the place where guests gathered to share stories, not to mention libations.

The lounge has lots of overstuffed sofas to sink into and relax. If you are in the mood there are board games as well as books to be read.

Aqua Mekong also has a beautiful Cocktail Lounge decorated with handmade lacquered panels. A hideaway bar opens from the wall to reveal a tantalizing array of glassware.

The Aqua Mekgons Cocktail Lounge.

In addition, there is a Private Cinema where you can enjoy blockbuster entertainment in surround sound. An outdoor cinema also screens popular films on occassion. Fresh popcorn is also available!

The intimate Aqua Mekong has an unexpectedly large range of wellness and relaxation services. There is a beautifully appointed spa offering indulgent massage and beauty treatments. The gym has exercise machines and free weights and there are early morning meditation and yoga classes.

A plunge pool on a Mekong river cruise ship.

The Aqua Mekong river cruise ship has an infinity plunge pool with magnificent views over the bow. I often enjoyed a refreshing dip before lunch. A large sun terrace at the stern has comfortable sun loungers as well as teak tables and chairs.

There is a small but nonetheless interesting array of activities on board Aqua Mekong.

There are cooking demonstrations and classes hosted by the head chef. These were very popular on my review voyage.

The on board expedition team leaders also provide fascinating lectures about the culture, life and history of Vietnam and Cambodia.

The Games Room on the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship.

There is a games room featuring table football complete with cork balls for quiet play, as well as board games like chess, mahjong, Scrabble and Monopoly.

Aqua Mekong also has a boutique selling branded merchandise together with clothing, keepsakes and curios made by local villagers.

The Aqua Mekong dress code can best be described as smart-casual. On my review voyage guests wore casual loose-fitting clothing on board during the day.

Editors tip: Whilst on shore excursions I recommend respectful attire, especially in religious or rural settings where the cultural norms are more conservative. Clothing that covers the arms and legs is ideal in these circumstances.

In the evening most guests on my voyage liked to dress smartly. Men wore shirts with collars while women wore pant suits, or dresses and blouses.

It’s worth noting that there is no need for jackets or formal wear.

The Aqua Mekong is not quite all-inclusive. Meals, wines and Champagne are included as well as non-alcoholic beverages, teas and coffees. However, spirits and house cocktails are not included. These incur an additional charge of USD8-20.

On the other hand, the river cruise fare includes all shore excursions, as well as transfers to and from the ship. In addition, laundry and pressing is included in the cruise fare.

It’s worth noting that gratuities are not included in the cruise fare. Gratuities can be paid in cash or by credit card at the end of your voyage.

Editors tip: Aqua Mekong accepts credit card payments using Visa or Mastercard. American Express is not accepted on board the ship.

Aqua Mekong appeals to those who want to explore the places others rarely visit.

Indeed, most guests have seen the World. They are discerning and active, ranging in age from 40 to 70-years old.

Most guests are from the USA and the UK, however Australians, Canadians and Europeans are also onboard.

It’s worth noting that Aqua Mekong is gay-friendly.

The Aqua Mekong is ideal for those who want to explore the river in style. Indeed, it is the most luxurious vessel on the Mekong. What’s more, it takes you places others don’t. Also, the dining is excellent and so too is the accommodation. However, the service can be patchy. Especially if you choose to stay on board rather than partaking in shore excursions. That said, I think Aqua Mekong offers one of the most uniquely exceptional cruise experiences.

Detailed Itinerary

Aqua Mekong crew warmly welcomes you aboard the Aqua Mekong with special refreshers, such as the salted watermelon crush with Thai basil. Celebrate your journey towards the heart of the Mekong River with the Khmer Apsara dance performance, a famous centuries-old tradition that is memorialized on the temple walls of Angkor Wat.

Say "Good Morning, Vietnam" while you cross the border and sail towards Tan Chau, a vibrant border town. Take the local rickshaw (or "xe loi" in Vietnamese) for a trip around town, or pedal 18 kilometers on a top-of-the-line mountain bike on the peaceful island of Long Khanh. In the afternoon, stroll through the verdant plantations in the Mekong Delta village of My An Hung, visiting a local's home to savor local fruits, listen to traditional folk song performances by villagers and participate in a unique unicorn dance. A biking option is also available for those who wish to explore the idyllic countryside on wheels.

Begin the day learning about traditional mat weaving at Binh Thanh Village or visit Sa Dec's vibrant market and the beautifully-preserved home of Marguerite Duras' legendary lover, Mr. Huynh Thuy Le. Continue downstream for Cai Be, sailing in a traditional sampan past lone fishermen on their long tail boats. Later in Cai Be, walk or cycle among high-roofed open courtyard houses that date back more than 100 years, before arriving at one such house invited by a gracious local resident.

Enroute to My Tho Port for disembarkation, visit Vinh Trang Pagoda, one of the largest Mahayana Buddhist temples in the region. Admire the temple's eclectic architectural style and see three large Buddha statues plus an impressive collection of bonsai trees.

Afterwards, transfer to Ho Chi Minh City where your cruise adventure comes to an end.

Built in 2014, the 205-foot Aqua Mekong charts a luxurious passage up and down the Mekong River between the Mekong Delta in Vietnam and the Kingdom of Cambodia. This state-of-the-art river expedition vessel comfortably accommodates up to 40 guests in 20 designer suites. Social areas include indoor and outdoor bars, relaxed-yet-refined lounging and dining areas, a plunge pool, outdoor movie theater, screening room, observation deck, fitness center, spa, and boutique.

Welcome Aboard

Your warm welcome from the crew is just a prelude to the outstanding service that you’ll receive throughout your Aqua Mekong Cruise. The one-to-one staff-to-guest ratio ensures that your every need will be attended to. The 40 crew members include a cruise director, a paramedic, and four professionally trained English-speaking guides who lead daily expeditions aboard four skiffs deep into the Mekong’s tributaries, and on foot among Khmer pottery villages, mountain monasteries, and the cultural treasures of Phnom Penh.

Divided equally between the first and second decks, each of the Aqua Mekong’s air-conditioned 320-sq-ft suites is created entirely of local materials with the sophistication and contemporary comforts of a five-star hotel. Each suite is furnished with a king-sized bed that can be converted into twins and has a sitting area and en-suite bathroom with a walk-in rain shower. Floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows allow you to gaze out over the ever-changing Mekong scenery from your pillow. Eight suites feature a balcony with a romantic table for two. Four sets of interconnecting suites (two sets on each deck) are ideal for families.

Life On Board

On-board dining is upscale and contemporary. Featuring an Asian-inspired menu created by Michelin-starred chef, David Thompson, who is one of Southeast Asia’s most acclaimed chefs, the cuisine endeavors to incorporate the day’s catch and the market’s freshest seasonal produce. The ship’s innovative cocktail menu echoes a similar locally-minded philosophy.

A private theater-style screening room and a library/games room will keep you well entertained during quiet times on board. Keep fit in the fully-equipped gym overlooking the river, shop for artisan-crafted souvenirs in the boutique, or be pampered in the spa. A health and safety officer is available if any health needs arise. Modern navigation technologies, the highest cruise ship standards, and an experienced river pilot and crew ensure that your journey on the water will be smooth and safe.

The air-conditioned top-level Observation Deck is designed to connect you with the constantly shifting landscape of floating Vietnamese villages, French colonial church spires, and gilded Buddhist stupas along this mighty river. Relax on the comfortable sun loungers, order a drink from the Rooftop Bar, and drop into the infinity plunge pool in the shaded Outdoor Lounge, which later transforms into a movie theater under the stars. Gravitate to the Indoor Lounge for lectures on ecology, culture, and wildlife.

Land & Water-Based Activities

In addition to visiting the sights, you can also look forward to daily cycling, kayaking, swimming, and guided meditation at sunrise. Ten bicycles are available if you wish to explore independently ashore.

Perfect for couples, families, and groups of friends, a cruise on the Aqua Mekong will take you on a cultural odyssey to flooded emerald forests and bamboo stilt villages accessible only by boat, as well as landmarks, temples, and villages where tradition, spirituality, and craftsmanship reside.

Itineraries & Prices

All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.

Only the cuisine of a Michelin-starred master like Consulting Chef David Thompson could match the stunning space created in Aqua Mekong's dining room by floor to ceiling windows overlooking the river, letting in natural sunlight, palm fringed vistas and vibrant village life.

Designed to match and occasionally distract from the stunning surroundings, Thompson’s dishes incorporate the timeless flavours and ancient sustainable ingredients of the Mekong’s many cultures and fertile fields. Thompson built his reputation between Sydney, London and Bangkok on Southeast Asian recipes culled from historic sources, a delectable tradition he continues on board the Aqua Mekong, bringing together the finest recipes of Khmer and Vietnamese river cultures.

Subtly balancing this timeless scenery, the refined interior has been stylishly finished with contemporary Asian artefacts, fine china and crystal glassware. These design elements are matched here by attentive, personalised service from English speaking staff who quickly learn guest's names and tastes, from Vietnamese sweet coffee in the morning to the evening’s fine imported wines.

Choose to make dinner a date night, or dine family style among friends old and new. Thompson’s menus are ever changing, designed to incorporate the day’s catch and the market’s freshest produce, be it smoked fish, tapioca and vegetable dumplings, Vietnamese catfish minced with shallots, chilies and Thai basil, grilled river prawns with peanut relish. Then finish with something considerably more decadent, like a luscious Vietnamese artisanal chocolate fondant.

The Aqua Mekong is also the first cruise ship on Southeast Asia’s greatest river to offer a fitness centre, library, screening room and observation deck.

Measuring 62 metres in length, the matte-black hulled Aqua Mekong brings Indochine influenced aesthetic to the Aqua Mekong’s interiors, which are built entirely of local sustainable materials and incorporating natural fibres from the surrounding environment with artisanal touches of the Mekong’s multifaceted cultures. This understated elegance, realised in the most modern, natural materials continues in the ship’s social areas. In the sun lit dining room, fresh tropical flowers add a subtle pop of colour against the polished wood floors and natural woven fibres. Here as well, the Mekong influenced cuisine of Michelin-starred Executive Chef David Thompson of Bangkok’s Nam restaurant is served on fine china with sommelier selected wines in crystal glassware.

Upstairs on the Observation Deck, slide onto sleek contemporary interpretations of this region’s woven cane planters chairs, found in the air conditioned Indoor Lounge alongside plump couches finished in a cool grey so as not to distract from the engrossing panorama constantly streaming in through floor to high ceiling walls of windows. Tropical wind and fresh air on the Outdoor Lounge encourage unwinding on cushioned loungers or easing into the river-facing plunge pool. This shimmering oasis takes the edge off that equatorial swelter after an excursion shopping for ingredients with the chef in Cambodia’s wet markets, watching traditional silversmiths at work, or among snakes and crocodiles at a Vietnamese riverside farm.

Four auxiliary aluminum launch boats equipped with four-stroke low emission engines and with capacity for ten passengers depart from the Aqua Mekong two or three times per day on each expedition. Ten bicycles allow guests to go off on two wheels along the Mekong’s fascinating riverbanks.

Aqua Blu is transforming luxury expedition yachting in Indonesia

If you want to inspire Aqua Expeditions CEO and Founder Francesco Galli Zugaro, don’t tell him he’s brilliant, even though he is. Tell him he’s crazy. Tell him his ambitions are impossible. And then sit back and watch the magic happen. Galli Zugaro is a man who thrives on turning challenge into opportunity. The Italian-American has built a business operating luxury river cruises and yacht charters in some of the most complex destinations in the world – the Peruvian Amazon, the Vietnamese Mekong, the remotest Indonesian islands – onboard yachts he has had specially built.

Since founding Aqua Expeditions in 2007, Galli Zugaro has created several game-changing travel propositions for “affluent explorers” and been commended for feats including launching Peru's first luxury river cruise on the Amazon River, transforming luxury expedition yachting in Indonesia with Aqua Blu , and taking the first commercial superyacht ( Aqua Mare ) to the Galapagos. And with a fleet of six boats and counting, he’s not done yet.

As Aqua Expeditions prepares to announce its next project, we take a deep dive into Galli Zugaro’s greatest passions, chart his journey to success, and unveil the next steps of his master plan – which may soon be open to strategic investment.

Francesco Galli Zugaro, CEO of Aqua Expeditions

Where did your passion for travel stem from?

Francesco Galli Zugaro: Growing up in 16 countries put the travel bug in me. My dad was Managing Director for Latin America for Alitalia – it was in his blood to travel and this passed down to me. When my parents divorced, I started living with my mom and my stepdad; he was Bureau Chief for TIME magazine in many countries so we moved around from Germany to Lebanon to Israel to Cyprus to Italy, and so forth. After later graduating from Boston, I started working with a private equity group in South America that was investing in telecom and tourism. I ran the telecom startup for five years and then moved over to a small ship expedition investment that we made in the Galapagos. That was how I cut my teeth in travel.

Crashing Under $50,000? Bitcoin Is Suddenly Braced For Another ‘Crucial’ $9 Billion Earthquake After $2 Trillion Ethereum, XRP, Solana And Crypto Price Wipe Out

Today’s nyt ‘strands’ hint, spangram and answers for friday, july 5, a bill gates-recommended read is the bestselling book of the year so far.

What lead you to leave the private equity group and set up Aqua Expeditions ?

Having left Ecuador and the investment there that we exited, I started looking around South America. Originally, I wanted to go to Argentina. There was an American gentleman called Douglas Tompkins who owned North Face and invested in buying up cattle ranches so I thought, ‘let's head out there’. On the way, I stopped at Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon and I realise no one was doing the Amazon at a really high-end level’.

I went around Iquitos with a Peruvian Navy Admiral who told me there was a 50-metre steel hull for sale around one of the tributaries. So, we took one of the Navy’s little tugboats and knocked on the shed and this guy sold it to me – I towed it away that day. I then commissioned a shipyard to obviously build it for me and brought in Jordi Puig, a very well-known Peruvian architect at the time. From buying it to launching it with heads and beds took us eight months. I don't claim to be the first, but I was the first at the top-end level catering to what I call today ‘affluent explorers’.

Onboard Aqua Blu in Indonesia

Why did you pick South America to launch the business?

I picked South America because I knew it. At the time, the hottest package in South America was Machu Picchu and Galapagos. Compared to Ecuador at the time, the potential growth in Peru was amazing. Orient Express had come in and has five properties and three trains so they were pumping money into promoting the destination. So, I thought, all I have to do is plug a great product in the Peruvian Amazon and it's automatically going to be packaged up into the circuit of Peru at the time. It was very easy to quickly position a top end premium product. So I sold my house in Ecuador, moved my whole family to Peru and put everything into it. It was a risk, but I have a healthy measured appetite for risk.

Why did you decide to build a boat-focused business rather than enter the hotel market?

Having operated in the Galapagos, I thought how cool is it that you can control the guest experience? To really curate a guest experience in a one-night stay in a hotel is very difficult – you can't really make an impact. With the whole yachting experience cruising experience, you can curate something and create really cool environment for guests.

From a business perspective, these businesses are very cash rich because you can have high cash flow because people are booking ahead of time, with very few cancellations because these are long-haul aspirational trips. So, this has always been an appealing a both experiential and business opportunity.

Service and hospitality is key onboard all of Aqua Expeditions' boats

Why did you decide to build 12-cabin boats, and do you have plans to create larger ships?

I wanted something small. Originally the concept was to copy the idea of houseboats from Kerala put them on Amazon. I said ‘let's do four ships with two smaller cabins’, but when I ran the numbers, it wasn't scalable – the more you grow, the more fixed costs you have. Whereas on a 12-cabin ship, you can have 24 guests, but the economies of scale, as soon as you break even, become super attractive because our variable costs are very low. The only variable costs are the additional food and additional guides; the fuel and the operation are still fixed.

Secondly, the guest experience has to be dictated by small groups. These are trips with a high level of engagement to the the connection with the guides is key. We will never do anything that's above four couples to a guide – that allows you really to have an opportunity to engage, and the guide can tailor the excursions to that group. You can’t accomplish something so unique with a 100-guest ship.

Francesco Galli Zugaro in front of luxury river boat Aqua Mekong

How many of your ships are private charters versus tour operator bookings?

About a quarter of our business is private charter. Today, all of our ships operate 48 weeks. We have 30% charters, so about 15 charters a year, and most of them are private, but a lot of them are tour operator buyouts. So, in other words, a client comes in, buys out the ship for the week, and then resells it under their brand, because they package that up with a week in Siem Reap or Ho Chi Minh.

On private charters, what happens a lot is that we have two principal clients paying and it was hard for them to figure out who gets that top owner suite. So, in our river ships we have three suites which are very similar and very large. We've done that on all the ships, and that's allowed us to appeal very well to a private charter client.

Why did you choose to focus your business on areas that are more complex than others?

I just like the challenge. I like the feeling of accomplishment when I’ve been told many times ‘no it’s impossible, or no, you’re crazy,’ and then I showcase that it can be done. It just requires a vision and the capacity to execute. What initially started off as a vision is today a realization of 300 talented individuals that are working with me, from crew to management. I like a challenge; I don't like to take the easy way out. My biggest enjoyment comes from seeing guests appreciate what we've done.

Aqua Blu is redefining luxury expedition cruising in Indonesia . What lead you to operate in this destination?

I liked Indonesia you still feel like you're exploring. Galapagos in comparison is very structured. It's an amazing guest experience, but it's very regimented. In Indonesia, you can go exploring to see volcanoes, find dragons and birds-of-paradise, sail around Raja Ampat and the Spice Islands, and see what nature throws at you. That excites me, even though it's very difficult to get the permits. It look me two years to get the permits to flag in Indonesia, but I want to bring guests to see these parts of the world that are logistically complicated, and do it at a very high level.

What are your guests looking for, and how do you match destinations to meet their expectations?

If you talk to our guests, they've done everything. They're looking for something cool, different and relaxed. They want the world-class service but they're not pretentious so they're willing to walk barefoot and let their hair down. And a destination has to check their boxes in terms of nature and wildlife.

I chose the Vietnamese Mekong because it’s an iconic river connected to two iconic World Heritage sights – Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. And then I decided to operate in three marine biosphere reserves – Galapagos, Raja Ampat and Komodo – which are on everybody's bucket list. The next destinations will have a combination of that; they'll have either iconic rivers of the world or iconic coastal cruising that will provide a wildlife and nature component, and sometimes even a cultural component.

Private beach sundowners at Komodo National Park

What are your long-term plans for the company?

I've got a very clear map of exactly where I'm going to put ships. Pretty much true to form, I've delivered one every three years. Next year will be my 18th year and I'll be delivering my sixth ship. The details of where how and where will be revealed later this year. I've scouted the destinations and built itineraries – that's what I do on my off-time; I spend weeks and months scouting different bodies of water all over the world. That's my passion; finding new logistically complex destinations that I think I could venture into; raising the capital to finance the ships, because these are getting more and more expensive; and building unique itineraries.

What opportunities are there for interested investors?

This is a very profitable business because of our fixed costs. As long as you break even, profit could be in the range of somewhere around 50%. This year we’re going to exceed our forecast and forward bookings for 2025 are very strong already.

From an investor point of view, I've obviously retained control of the business and continue to do so. It doesn't mean that that will continue to be the case in the future. I'm open minded to see if I can add value strategically from a strategic partner – I have access to capital, but that strategic capital is something that I'm looking for in the future so that I can strategically roll out my business faster, and maybe have an opportunity to bring passenger flow to us faster, rather than organically growing.

There aren’t that many Aquas around. We’re the only business that has this size, this niche, this reach. The day Aqua goes out to market to find that strategic partner, I think it’s going to attract a lot of eyes that want to get into that space.

Aqua Mekong Discovery Cruise

Aboard the luxurious Aqua Mekong, this 3-night river cruise on the Mekong river offers plenty to see and explore for travelers with limited time. Our private fleet of ergonomic, sheltered launch boats put the pleasure and efficiency in exploring Mekong’s myriad waterways, making the most of your time in this beautiful region. All 3-night itineraries depart from Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Aqua Expeditions is the only Mekong cruise that provides complimentary flight extensions to Siem Reap for all itineraries ending in Phnom Penh.

Day 1 - Phnom Penh

Welcome our passengers over custom sundowners like the Salted Watermelon Crush with Thai basil. Together we celebrate the onward journey towards the heart of this mighty river with a Khmer Apsara performance, an indigenous tradition memorialized on the temple walls at Angkor Wat.

Day 2 - Tonle Sap River - Koh Chen - Kampong Chhnang

This morning, we visit Koh Chen, a silversmith village known for its fine craftsmanship. Keep an eye out for their famous silver bowls, regularly chosen by Cambodia's king as gifts for visiting dignitaries. In the afternoon, we continue learning about Khmer riverside life in Kampong Chhnang, the 'Port of Pottery' so called because archaeological findings here date to the 6th century. A biking option is available for guests who would like to explore the countryside.

Day 3 - Mouth Of The Tonle Sap Lake - Chhnok Tru - Moat Khla

Continue exploring the remote communities around the Tonle Sap Lake, designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1997. In Chhnok Tru, we “slide” into an ice factory and learn from locals what it’s like to live in a town where schools, churches, pagodas, and even the karaoke bar and police station all float. After lunch, we visit the floating village of Moat Khla, accessible only by water, and attend a Buddhist blessing ceremony in this isolated community.

Day 4 - Tonle Sap Lake - Prek Toal - Siem Reap

Set off by skiff into the 22,000-hectare Prek Toal Core Bird Reserve, one of the largest freshwater bodies in Asia and the last refuge in Southeast Asia for large waterbirds like the spot-billed pelicans, milky stork, black-headed ibis and the elusive masked finfoot. Disembarkation.

7 Exotic River Cruises You Never Knew About

Visiting the world's most historic cities and hidden charms in casual comfort, river cruises have become increasingly popular in recent years.

You’re likely familiar with trips on European rivers like the Rhine and the Danube or even themed river cruises that feature Christmas Markets or famous wine regions, but did you know there are also affordable river cruises allowing you to explore the world's most exotic waterways - places and ports that can't be reached by a traditional cruise ship?

Exotic River Cruises

Traveling to the most foreign, farthest reaches of the planet can seem daunting, but an exotic river cruise combines safety and style for a smooth ride through the heart of the world's most remote, hidden and off-the-beaten path places.

Aqua Expeditions Amazon River cruise

Insider Tip: Intimate and immersive shore excursions are a highlight of the exotic river cruise experience with smaller tour groups, private skiffs, customized outings and local guides who lend their expertise to every off-ship adventure.

There are some similarities between an exotic river cruise and their European counterparts, but exotic river cruises are typically at least 10 days to two weeks or longer, offer a better mix of small towns, villages and ancient sites, and you'll likely spend less time on the water than you'd expect as many included longer stays, cruise/tour combinations and even overnights in bigger cities.

If you're looking for something truly unique for your next unforgettable vacation, consider one of these exotic travel options recommended by the experts at CruiseInsider.

The Amazon River, South America

There are multiple cruises that offer the opportunity to explore the wild and tropical Amazon. The legendary river flows through Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Brazil before emptying into the Atlantic, but the Peruvian Amazon River basin is a stretch that’s particularly enthralling.

Amazon rainforest in Brazil, South America

While most itineraries on larger vessels are limited to sections between the Brazilian ports of Belem and Manaus, smaller river cruise ships are made for venturing further upriver and incorporate the region’s more exotic and underdeveloped areas.

For example, Lindblad Expeditions will bring you to the incredibly biodiverse Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve where you’ll have the chance to encounter sloths, howler monkeys, rare pink dolphins, colourful macaws and an astounding variety of other bird life. Experience traditional village life firsthand on the 9-night Upper Amazon Cruise from Lindblad Expeditions that begins and ends in Lima, Peru.

Insider Tip: The region's "wet season" is the better option for many first-timers because of the higher water levels that make it easier to explore the Amazon's smaller tributaries, enjoy the forest's "bloom" and see a richer variety of wildlife.

Mekong river, southeast asia.

Civilization has flourished around great rivers throughout history, and the Mekong is no exception. One of the world’s most diverse and dramatic waterways, the Mekong River flows through China, Myanmar, Thailand, Lao PDR, Cambodia and Vietnam. While these countries and cultures do share some similarities, they each offer plenty of their own unique characteristics, ancient sites and dramatic landscapes, and are considered one of the most earth's most exotic ecosystems.

Observation Deck on Aqua Expeditions' Aqua Mekong

Vietnam offers an incredible mix of flavors and fun, having been influenced by China for a thousand years, with incense-filled temples, bonsai, calligraphy and more. And Cambodia borrows more from Thailand in its culture, favoring Buddhism, Hindu architecture, curries and traditional wai greetings.

Aqua Expeditions’ luxury river cruise ship, Aqua Mekong , explores the Mekong basin in all-inclusive elegance, with expert guides on board, a state-of-the-art vessel and immersive excursions from the only private fleet of launch boats on the Mekong river.

Insider Tip: Aqua Mekong has four ergonomically-designed launch boats that offer highly personalized day trips to landmarks, temples and villages where tradition, spirituality and craftsmanship reside.

The opportunity to discover rich heritage and traditions enriched by 2,000 years of human history is what makes the Mekong river cruise one of Asia’s most epic and worthwhile journeys on water, and one of the few cultural destinations on Earth that’s best explored on an exotic river voyage.

Volga River, Russia

A cruise on the Volga is where travelers can experience old and modern Russia, visiting both the country's most important large cities – Moscow and St. Petersburg – and some of the more quaint, historic towns along this legendary river.

Russia's iconic Volga River

Voyages typically go from late spring until early fall, and will allow you to economically explore iconic landmarks like the Kremlin and Red Square in Moscow, or take a stroll around St. Petersburg’s Catherine Palace, not to mention the luxurious palaces, magnificent cathedrals, fortified monasteries and more dotted throughout this historic and humbling region.

Viking River Cruises offers several cruises between St. Petersburg and Moscow that reveals the real Russia as never before, even showcasing Russia’s rural side, like Yaroslavl and Uglich. With five ships and a variety of voyages to choose from,  Viking's  fully refurbished, elegant Russia fleet sets new standards of excellence in this region.

Insider Tip: May through late July, the midsummer night skies are lit by the sun in this northern region. You’ll be able to experience St. Petersburg’s magical skyline during this period that’s referred to as the White Nights, when the evening sky never darkens.

The Volga meanders through Russia’s cultural heart — introducing you to many of the country’s most memorable highlights and through the most idyllic and historic landmarks of Russia. It's a beautiful glimpse behind the veil of a country that has stayed wrapped in mystery and intrigue for centuries.

Nile River, Egypt

A journey on the Nile River, the world’s longest and most well-known river, is arguably the best way to experience Egypt and its incredible historic sites. Flowing north out of Lake Victoria, and meandering through Uganda, Sudan and Egypt, you'll see everything from the Great Sphinx of Giza to the famous pyramids, while passing rain forests, mountains, savanna and desert before ending in the Nile Delta along the Mediterranean coastline.

Giza pyramids in Egypt near Cairo at Sunset

While several cruise ships sail its waters, Uniworld's brand new S.S. Sphinx – the only luxury river cruise ship in Egypt – will set the standard for elegance in exotic river cruising. Making her debut on the Nile River in 2020, the S.S. Sphinx will bring the beauty of the region to life onboard with the Splendors of Egypt and The Nile voyage - a 12-day roundtrip journey from Cairo along the world's most iconic river.

Chobe River, Africa

While a traditional land safari is the most popular way to enjoy Africa's wildlife, one of the newest, easiest, and most efficient ways to see take in all that Africa offers is an exotic river voyage. As your comfortable ship cruises smoothly along the river, animals perceive no threat, affording you with once-in-a-lifetime up-close wildlife experiences.

Giraffe at sunset during a safari

Fifty miles from the breathtakingly vast Victoria Falls, the game rich Chobe River runs through the northern part of Botswana’s Chobe National Park, eventually flowing into the mighty Zambezi River. This renowned, reed-lined river is a haven for wildlife viewing throughout the year, with travelers typically seeing giraffe, antelope, sable, buffalo, lions, jackals, leopards, baboons, kudu, hyenas, crocodiles, monkeys and impalas.

Insider Tip: For the best chances of seeing wildlife along this waterway, book your voyage during the dry season from April through October, when water inland is scarce and migratory animals head towards the Chobe River.

Designed specifically for wildlife viewing with unobstructed views of the river and African landscape, think about a trip on AmaWaterways' intimate 28-passenger Zambezi Queen. This African-themed, environmentally-friendly ship was designed to ensure no harm comes to this sensitive ecosystem, using water jet propulsion, fuel-efficient and low-emission generators, and a solar heating system.

Yangtze River, China

A cruise on China’s Yangtze River, the third longest river in the world, is a spellbinding odyssey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture and history. Ideal for history buffs, wildlife lovers and anyone who wants a taste of the Orient without immersing yourself in a particular place, an exotic river cruise is the perfect way to explore China comfortably – a country that can be considered "overwhelming" to some.

Fisherman works on the river near Yangshuo, China.

From China’s staggering architectural monuments—the Forbidden City, Summer Palace and Great Wall—to passing the centuries-old pagodas along the banks to the natural beauty of the Yangtze River’s Three Gorges, one of the most impressive stretches of scenery with 80 miles of spectacular landscapes, this itinerary highlights China’s history, culture and timeless wonders.

Insider Tip: Many exotic, endangered species can be seen along the Yangtze as well, including the rare Chinese alligator, giant salamander, the Yangtze river dolphin, giant  soft-shell  turtle and more!

Uniworld River Cruises offers the 10-night Highlights of China & The Yangtze Cruisetour that begins in the exciting city of Beijing and ends in Shanghai, with four days of cruising on the river. You'll be among the first aboard Uniworld's brand new Sanctuary Yangtze Explorer , with its lavish features, the largest cabins and suites on the river — all with private balconies – and an unheard of 1:1 crew to guest ratio ensuring superior service down to the smallest detail.

Ganges River, India

The Ganges River flows through India and Bangladesh, and holds a very strong spiritual significance among the local people. Wondrous sights rich in romance and intrigue come alive in the “Golden Triangle”—Delhi, Jaipur and Agra—and you will see it all in style, safety, and in spacious accommodations.

India's Taj Mahal in Agra

Profoundly mysterious and gloriously exotic, there is no better way to delve as deeply into India’s fascinating historical and religious heritage than a boutique river cruise on Ganges Voyager II, a floating five-star hotel you can only experience with Uniworld Boutique River cruises.

Insider Tip: Authentic excursions are an absolute high point on Indian itineraries, with experiences on local life in rural India, exploring Udaipur’s architectural marvels and palaces, and even boarding a trishaw—a pedal-powered three-wheeled rickshaw—through the streets of Kalna.

Experience India's colorful bazaars, ancient temples, colonial-era mansions, and energetic city streets on this epic and exotic journey for culturally curious travelers looking for a truly immersive and unforgettable river cruise experience.

Not a thing to do, but take a trip down memory lane! That ’70s Show managed to cultivate some of the most iconic moments in pop culture history. It’s also responsible for catapulting its younger stars Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Wilmer Valderrama and Danny Masterson into the spotlight. Created by Mark Brazill, Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner, That ’70s Show centered on a group of teens growing up in the suburbs of Wisconsin in the 1970s. It ran for seven seasons on Fox from 1998 to 2006. Debra Jo Rupp, Kurtwood Smith, Don Stark, Tanya Roberts, Lisa Robin Kelly and Tommy Chong also appeared on the series. “[We] had no idea what was ahead of us, or if it would even last … but we knew it was gonna be fun,” Valderrama reflected via Instagram in August 2018, while celebrating the show’s 20-year anniversary. “We spent 8 years and 200 episodes together, we traveled the world … [and] we grew up together. We were a family, and will always be.” Grace, the series lead, and Kutcher both left the series after seven seasons. Though Josh Meyers stepped in during their absence, both actors returned for the series finale in 2006. The success of That ’70s Show also led to the release of That ’80s Show in 2002. The spinoff series featured Glenn Howerton of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame in the early days of his career. The sitcom was short-lived as it was canceled that year after one season. For more hot celebrity news, listen to Us Weekly editors dish on top topics & trends with these clips from the Hot Hollywood Podcast! Despite That ’70s Show’s continued popularity today through cable reruns and Netflix streaming, fans shouldn’t expect to see the series revived in the same fashion as Roseanne and Full House. Grace previously hinted that the likelihood of the entire cast returning for a revival is slim. “That cast has gone on to such amazing things. Each person individually has had such great success,” he explained to Newsweek in September 2018. “I would absolutely love to do it to spend time with those guys, but I don’t want to think about it too much. It’d be too fun of an idea, and I doubt it would happen.” Scroll down to see what the cast has been up to since the series wrapped!

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
