If crying babies and toddlers throwing temper tantrums is not the vibe you’re looking for on your next vacation, consider an adults-only resort. While luxury Caribbean all-inclusives might come to mind as the only adults-only option, there are plenty of peaceful options for grown-ups right here in the United States.

We’ve curated a list of eight exceptional properties nationwide that cater exclusively to adult tastes. Whether you’re seeking a tropical paradise in the Florida Keys, a wine country escape in California, or a cozy New England hideaway, these resorts promise an unforgettable child-free experience.

The Weston, Vermont

Suite 7, Pet-friendly | Premium bedding, memory foam beds, individually decorated

Set in a quiet town in Vermont’s picturesque Green Mountains, The Weston reimagines the quintessential New England bed and breakfast as a luxurious retreat. This intimate hotel keeps the atmosphere exclusive with just five guestrooms and three suites, creating an ideal setting for peaceful, romantic escapes.

The Weston masterfully marries the cozy charm of a country inn with the refined elegance of an upscale urban hotel. Each room offers a unique aesthetic, showcasing carefully selected antiques, plush bedding, and high-end amenities, including Dyson hairdryers and Frette robes.

The attentive yet unobtrusive staff provides genuinely warm hospitality, paying close attention to every guest’s needs. Personal touches abound, from addressing visitors by name to offering freshly baked scones to accompany a post-breakfast coffee to go. Schedule a massage at The Weston’s renowned spa during your stay for an extra relaxing vacation.

Age Restrictions: Guests must be 12 years of age or older.

Little Palm Island, Florida

Little Palm Island Resort & Spa - A Noble House Resort - Premium bedding, minibar, in-room safe, desk

As you journey along the picturesque Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys, a subtle marker on Little Torch Key entices you to turn off into the welcome center for Little Palm Island —the entry point to America’s sole private island resort. Your adults-only island experience begins here, as you’re handed an ice-cold glass of the resort’s signature cocktail, the Gumby Slumber, and whisked aboard an elegant wooden boat for your 10-minute ride to the island.

Spread across four acres of lush island terrain, Little Palm Island offers just 30 exclusive suites, each concealed behind dense vegetation for ultimate privacy. The island maintains a strict capacity of 60 guests maximum, forbids guests under 18, and doesn’t equip its rooms with televisions or phones to cultivate a tranquil atmosphere.

Age Restrictions: Children under 18 are not allowed on the island.

Auberge Du Soleil, California

When Circa Resort & Casino opened in 2020, it became the first adults-only hotel in the city. Located off-strip right next to The Freemont Street Experience , Circa has gained a reputation as the best place to go for sports betting and pool parties. The resort boasts the largest sports betting experience in the world, with a three-story sportsbook that’s busy all day and night.

Upstairs, you’ll find Stadium Swim , six pools spread out over three levels, all facing a 40-foot-tall high-definition screen so you can keep an eye on all of your games.

Age Restrictions: Circa does not allow anyone under 21 through its doors, carding people at every entrance.

Triple Creek Ranch, Montana

The 5 Most Popular International Summer Travel Destinations in 2024

5 stars travel recensioni

Summer is the most popular time of year for Americans to travel, and despite concerns about inflation, 2024 could be a bustling year for summer vacations. An Economist/YouGov survey found that 38% of Americans plan to travel this summer . Among those with a household income of $100,000 or more, 63% of respondents said they plan to take a summer holiday.

Family is a big component of summer plans. Four out of 5 surveyed are either planning to vacation with family or visit family this summer. With children out of school during the summer months, this is the time of year that families tend to take their longest venture away from home—and for many, that means an international trip.

Others want to get away from home to immerse themselves in a bucket list-worthy adventure. A trend report by American Express found that 65% of people looking to travel this year plan to splurge on a major trip, from off-the-beaten-path journeys to vacations through multiple European countries.

Whether travelers intend to make memories with family and friends or take the trip of a lifetime, many will look to international destinations for their summer vacations. To find out which global cities will be at the top of the list, we compiled a ranking of the five most popular international summer travel destinations, according to Google Flights search data collected between January 2024 and March 2024.

Read on to see if your dream travel destination made the list.

Aerial view of Cancún resorts and beach.

#5. Cancún

Cancún has long been a favorite resort destination and in 2022 alone, 9.5 million international passengers arrived by plane , which made the city México’s most popular flight destination. Its close proximity to the United States and abundant direct flights help boost its rankings among American travelers. Perhaps the biggest draws for tourists are the white sand beaches and the temperate Caribbean Sea.

Travelers can choose from more than 35,000 rooms at different price points across dozens of Cancún resorts and hotels. Once visitors have had their fill of the Yucatán peninsula's beautiful beaches, many enjoy visiting nearby historic ruins, including Chichén Itzá and Tulum.

Elevated view of the Colosseum with blue sky.

History buffs love Rome for its ancient architecture, which still stands among more modern parts of the city. The best-known tourist site is likely the Colosseum, the massive amphitheater that has hosted gladiator fights, animal hunting, and other public spectacles beginning in the first century. Visitors walking around the Eternal City may also see other landmarks of its long, storied history, including ancient aqueducts, the Roman Forum, and the Pantheon. Food lovers can get a taste of authentic local cuisine, such as its celebrated carbonara , cacio e pepe , and suppli .

Nearby is Vatican City, the Roman Catholic Church's headquarters and the site of masterpieces, including Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling and Raphael’s The School of Athens.

Japan welcomed a record-setting 3.1 million international visitors in March 2024, many of whom came to the nation's capital city, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization. Travelers enjoy visiting the busy Sensō-ji temple, Tokyo's oldest temple, which features a golden icon of the Buddhist goddess of mercy. If you want a unique taste of the city, head to Harmonica Yokocho to find delectable dishes from tiny, unassuming restaurants.

Before tourists leave, many make a stop at Shibuya Crossing. Surrounded by stores and restaurants, the world's busiest intersection is flooded by seas of strangers crossing under the bright lights of nearby advertisements.

Aerial view of Eiffel Tower and surrounding neighborhoods.

Paris remains one of the busiest tourist cities in the world, and it's gearing up for an even bigger summer this year as the host of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. Many tourists beeline to the Eiffel Tower to snap a picture of the most visited monument in the world, but most don't know about the gardens below the tower, which are free to access and a great place for a picnic.

Another iconic stop in Paris is the world's largest museum, the Louvre. Of course, you can find art all over the City of Love—near the Pont de Grenelle bridge, for example, is a roughly 38-foot-tall replica of New York City's Statue of Liberty. Of course, no trip to Paris would be complete without sampling the city's many breads, cheeses, and pastries.

Big Ben with bridge over Thames and flag of England against blue sky.

Packed with plenty of things to see and do, the capital city of the United Kingdom is this summer's most popular international destination for U.S. travelers. One of London's top sites is also one of its oldest: once a royal palace, the Tower of London was built in 1066 by William the Conqueror and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Buckingham Palace, another former residence of the British monarchy, is also a favorite tourist attraction today.

Westminster Abbey is another must-see. Buried or commemorated here are 3,300 notable individuals, including William Shakespeare, Sir Isaac Newton, and Queen Elizabeth I. When you're ready to move on from historic sightseeing, check out the London Eye, where glass capsules offer a 360-degree view of the city.

5 Texas cities pay $90,000 for a shot at Michelin stars putting the Lone Star state on the culinary map

There’s no one who knows the food scene in and around Dallas quite as well as D Magazine Food Critic Brian Reinhart.

“I go to about two hundred restaurants a year,” said Reinhart.

So we met him at one of his top Dallas restaurant picks, Brass Ram in Deep Ellum, to get his thoughts about the Michelin Guide coming to Texas .

“My first thought was there's going to be a whole lot of arguments and drama and people debating who should be on there, who should not be on there, what got snubbed, what they messed up, what they missed,” Reinhart said. “And honestly, it's going to be tremendously fun.”

For those un-initiated – the Michelin Stars are considered the most prestigious awards in the culinary world. Restaurants that secure a 1,2, or 3-star rating are touted as the best of the best.

Incoming Texas restaurant selections will be judged based on the five criteria established by the Michelin system:

  • Quality products
  • Harmony of flavors
  • Mastery of cooking techniques
  • Voice and personality of the chef as displayed via the cuisine
  • Consistency between visits and throughout the menu

Anonymous judges have already started dining in Dallas and Fort Worth, as well as Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. And it’s pay to play.

“The state of Texas Travel Office is paying half the entire cost of being in Michelin for us,” said Visit Dallas CEO. “So the other half was divided five times and each of us is paying $90,000 to be part of the Michelin Guide.”

The benefits are a global stamp of quality, and customers willing to pay more for the experience.

“It's a huge draw both for culinary tourists and talent chefs,” said Reinhart.

Something Brass Ram General Manager Mitsy Holis is very excited about.

“I think that it's an opportunity for us to shine a light into the Dallas food market as to what we really bring to the table,” Holis said.

Restaurants in both Dallas and Fort Worth proper will be eligible for Michelin Stars, but much of the suburbs will not.

“They are visiting Dallas and immediately surrounding areas might include other parts of Dallas County might include parts of the countryside,” Reinhart said. “But Collin County is not included in the guide. It probably means Denton County isn't going to be either.”

As we wait for the first ceremony later this year, everyone’s got predictions on what restaurants might join the coveted list.

“Restaurants like Tei-An, Downtown, and Tatsu in Deep Ellum are some of the easy favorites to be Michelin-recognized,” Reinhart said.

And now we’re all anxiously awaiting the results.

Here’s What That 5-Star Hotel Rating Actually Means

Here’s What That 5-Star Hotel Rating Actually Means

It might not mean what you think it means...

(CNN) – Online user ratings are great, until you discover they’re fake. Or you remember how your uncle always leaves reviews and his taste is terrible.

Travelers want a proper set of standards, which generic hotel star ratings seem to offer. After all, you see, “Five-star hotel” and think, “Must be amazing,” just as you hear “One-star” and realize “It’s gonna be a rough honeymoon.”

But what do those ratings actually mean, particularly now that the internet and its many hotel review sites have transformed travel? We’re here to set you straight... right after we make you way more confused.

A shifting standard

Hotel ratings were created “to help customers work through acceptable and unacceptable choices, then within the acceptable choices get some sort of hierarchy of better and worse,” explains Chekitan Dev of Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration.

A great idea, sure. But the problem was that a number of different hierarchies emerged, with limited overlap.

Non-American approaches

“In most parts of the world, the system is controlled by the government,” Dev says.

These ratings typically do have one thing in common: They’re out of date.

“The government ones tend to be stuck in the past,” Dev observes. “They don’t update their criteria. They don’t take into account service and more intangible issues.”

Even the ones that are current may be a little questionable.

Changing stars

It was long nearly impossible to find a five-star hotel in France. Why?

Their rating system stopped at four. Then in 2009, they added an extra star category, bringing it to the standard five stars. The following year, one more category was added: luxury hotels deemed particularly extraordinary are now given a separate “Palace” title by the French Tourism Development Agency.

Meanwhile, Dev notes India placed a luxury tax on its five-star hotels, causing properties falling into that category to modestly present themselves as four- or even three-star properties.

Hotels in some nations go the other way, lobbying to receive an artificially elevated rating so they can charge higher rates or even use the rating as leverage for loans.

The US offers a different kind of confusion.

The government is not in control of ratings, resulting in multiple methods. Traditionally, the two most prominent rankers have been AAA, with its diamonds, and Mobil (now Forbes), with its stars.

Dev notes the diamonds are usually more laid back: “It’s common for hotels to have five diamonds and four stars.”

Now that you’re properly perplexed, let’s actually look at the levels.

Scaling the stars

There isn’t a single answer to the question of what star ratings actually mean, since there are so many systems shaped by so many factors.

Some tourism marketers now even give exceptional luxury properties an unofficial six-star designation. (Think stunning over-water villas in the Maldives with private butlers, like the ones in the video at the top of this page).

And bear in mind not all of a brand’s properties are created equal when making assumptions about a chain's star category – newer hotels are usually more modern and deserving of a higher rating.

But just to have some sense of how it works, ratings traditionally play out like this.

Expect the hotel to be small to medium-sized, most likely part of a national chain.

You will likely get a telephone and TV in your room. You may have a restaurant; you probably won’t have room service.

It should be “conveniently located to moderately priced attractions.” Think: Econolodge, Motel 6.

Slightly more personal; public access may be restricted past certain hours. Think: Days Inn, LaQuinta Inn.

About now, the lobby should be pretty nice. Fitness centers and pools make appearances. Think: Holiday Inn, Best Western.

The goodies you’re pleasantly surprised by at three stars have become commonplace, such as spas, concierges, and car valet services. Think: Hyatt Regency, Marriott.

The service is pretty personal. The property will likely be quite large. The rooms will offer “stylish furnishing and quality linens;” your lobby may be described as “sumptuous.” Expect a concierge. Think: Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons.

Leading to the question...

How much should stars shape your decisions?

Those in the travel industry have mixed views on the use of stars.

Katherine Norton from Brownell Travel, North America's oldest travel agency, is polite about them (“a rating is something a hotel should be very proud of”).

That said, “Brownell’s business is centered around longstanding relationships and personal experience.” This means a “three-star hotel could be chosen because we know they will go above and beyond for our clients.”

Similarly, Dev says it’s important to understand a basic fact: “A one-star hotel doesn’t have to be a bad hotel.” At their best, such properties are just minimal: They don’t offer bells and whistles; they charge less accordingly.

So when you pick up your laptop to locate your next lodgings, how should you approach star ratings?

“If you focus only on star ratings, you miss out on a lot of potential benefits,” says Slav Kulik, CEO and co-founder of the software company Plan A Technologies. He knows this field well, having provided custom software platforms, digital transformation solutions, and countless other services for dozens of hospitality and travel clients.

What can consumers expect? “Thanks to AI, booking engines and loyalty programs can now deliver a personalized experience for every guest,” Kulik reports.

Considerations can include: Which floor do you like to stay on? What products do you want awaiting you when you arrive at your room? Which restaurant should have a reservation ready to go, so you can have a favorite meal after a long day? Which type of pillow do you prefer?

If you’re determined to get as much star value as possible, Dev suggests taking the price of a hotel and dividing it by the number of stars.

Then explain to your spouse why spending $500 on a four-star hotel instead of $130 on a one-star may have technically shattered the family budget – but it generated $5 in average star savings. What can matter more than that?

4-Star vs 5-Star Hotels: What’s the Difference?

5-star hotel lobby with lounge seating and wood panel walls

If you’ve ever stayed at a “4-star” hotel, you may have expected more personalized service and left disappointed. But then, maybe the difference between a 4-star hotel and a 5-star hotel was never clearly explained. That’s not surprising given all the different star rating systems of hotels in the world–and the differing expectations of guests.

In this post, we explore the differences in a 4 star vs 5 star hotels. We’ll take a look at all the different rating systems around the world, what each star level offers, and help you decide whether upgrading to a 5-star hotel is right for you. So, read on to learn more about how star ratings work and why they can be so confusing.

No Standardized Hotel Star Rating System

Believe it or not, there is no global standard for hotel ratings. A private organization called the World Hotel Rating Project is attempting to standardize hotel ratings around the world, but as of now they are probably years away from reaching their goal.

In North America, Forbes Travel , which uses a 1-to-5 star rating system, and the American Automobile Association (AAA) , which uses a 1-to-5 diamond rating system, are the most widely recognized hotel raters that conduct hotel inspections. Both are private organizations, however, and have no broader oversight.

The hotel ratings of online booking sites Expedia and TripAdvisor are based on guest reviews, and many users ratings take into account the value provided relative to the hotel cost, making them even more subjective.

In Europe, the Hotelstars Union is a non-profit organization that has a standardized hotel rating system across many European countries. It was formed by HOTREC, a grouping of national trade associations representing the hospitality industry in each country.

a hotel sign on the side of a building in Paris

In the United Kingdom, the Automobile Association (AA) has been rating British accommodations, including hotels, on a 1-to-5-star rating system since 1905. It uses a long and specific list of criteria when its inspectors visit a property.

In other parts of the world, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, for instance, each has its own hotel star rating system, according to the Five Star Alliance , a travel agency for the world’s best hotels.

With all these different hotel rating systems, how can discerning guests make an informed decision when choosing between a four-star hotel and a five-star hotel? Price is usually a notable difference, but is the higher price of a 5-star hotel worth the premium over a 4-star? How can guests know what to expect when arriving at their lodging?

The Biggest Difference In Hotel Star Ratings Is Service

The short answer is that both 4-star and 5-star hotels offer superior accommodations, but a 5-star hotel will generally go one step further in anticipating guest wants and needs before guests ask for them. The level of service is elevated and more personalized.

5 star hotel concierge

Forbes Travel says that 5-star hotel staff “demonstrate intuitive, thoughtful, and anticipatory” service. For example, rather than just booking a dinner reservation for you, which a 4-star hotel front desk clerk probably would do, a 5-star hotel would have a dedicated concierge who would make sure you got the best table. They would also book a taxi to the restaurant–without the guest needing to ask. In addition, housekeeping would not only provide an exceptional clean, but they would also be extraordinarily helpful. Staff, in general, would show a genuine interest in your well-being, according to Forbes.

Likewise, the staff at AAA 5-diamond properties “meticulously serve and exceed all guest expectations,” according to the AAA tourbook . That’s a pretty tough bar to surpass.

For 5-star hotels in Europe, the Hotelstars Union rating criteria for a 5-star accommodation focuses on service details that are in addition to the physical amenities that a 4-star hotel must provide. For example, the 5-star European hotel must provide a 24-hour staffed reception desk, valet parking, a concierge, luggage service, ironing service, turndown service in the evening, and a personalized greeting such as a gift or flowers in the room. Without even one of these service offerings, the hotel won’t qualify for a 5-star rating.

The rating brochure of AA in the United Kingdom states that staff at 5-star properties must have “excellent social skills and anticipation of individual guest’s needs to create unique and memorable experiences.” Service at these properties must be delivered with “efficiency of an exceptional standard without detriment to other service areas.” A very high bar indeed.

The Five-Star Alliance says that the staff at a 5-star hotel are “polite, attentive, discreet, and can anticipate guests’ needs.” The Five-Star Alliance even goes as far as saying its hotels must have a high staff-to-guest ratio, ideally above 2.5.

Amenities and Accommodations are First Class at Five Star Hotels

This is not to say that physical amenities and property ambiance are ignored in the ratings. Forbes Travel raters evaluate 5-star hotels for beautiful and super-comfortable beds, distinctive cocktails and memorable meals at on-site restaurants, and guest room amenities that go beyond what’s typically expected and that are suited to the local environment. For example, guests at a 5-star hotel in a tropical locale might be provided an umbrella, flip-flops, and mosquito repellent in their guest rooms–something a 4-star might not provide.

hotel pool with palm trees and pool loungers

For AAA , the physical attributes of a 5-diamond property–such as the building design, layout, and decor–are “extraordinary in every manner” and show “the ultimate in luxury and sophistication.” The accommodations are “first-class.” This goes beyond the refined, stylish, and “enhanced level of quality” guests would find at a 4-diamond property. Many hotels also include permanent luxury suites for longer term stays.

The U.K.’s AA has a long list of requirements for 5-star guest rooms, including a writing desk, wardrobes with interior lighting, and for in-room beverage service: chinaware, teapots, and a selection of specialty teas. To American guests, these amenities may appear unnecessary, but it all comes down to not only meeting but exceeding guest expectations in a particular locale.

The Five Star Alliance is a little more modern in its criteria for the 5-star properties it represents. For example, its many 5-star guest room standards include outlets for personal electronics, including USB ports; digital key entry; a lighted, full-length mirror; and a flat-screen TV with international programming. That’s not to say that many four-star hotels will meet some of these criteria, but the 5-star hotel must meet all of them to qualify.

If all these different criteria still leave you perplexed, remember this: the main difference between a 4-star and 5-star hotel is that the 5-star provides an elevated level of personalized service and amenities. That doesn’t mean a 4-star can’t do the same in some areas, but to qualify as a 5-star, it must provide an unmatched level of service across all areas.

To further assist you in your decision-making, we’ve distilled the main rating systems we’ve discussed here to come up with the handy comparison chart below. Note that some of the points below may vary from hotel to hotel, but in general, this is what you can expect:

The various hotel rating systems can be useful guides so long as you recognize what the hotels are rated on and what guests in that region expect. For example, a 5-star resort in Mexico is going to cater to different types of guests than a 5-star hotel in central London. It’s wise to adjust your expectations accordingly to avoid disappointment.

4-star vs 5-star Hotels: How to Decide

Deciding between a 4-star vs 5-star hotel is a personal decision based on what you’re willing to pay and the services and amenities you’re looking for. For example, a fitness center is not specifically included as an amenity that differentiates between these two classes of hotels. So, if a fitness center is important to you, and you are comparing between a 4-star hotel with a gym and a 5-star hotel without one, this will have to be factored into the decision.

The next time you’re faced with this decision, consider what you want out of your stay. Is it a special occasion worth splurging on a 5-star hotel? Or is it mainly a business trip with little time to enjoy the extra amenities? Only you can decide.

Photo Appears to Capture Path of Bullet Used in Assassination Attempt

Michael Harrigan, a retired F.B.I. special agent, said the image captured by Doug Mills, a New York Times photographer, seems to show a bullet streaking past former President Donald J. Trump.

Follow the latest news on the Trump assassination attempt .

In documenting the Pennsylvania campaign rally on Saturday afternoon that turned into an attempt on a former president’s life, Doug Mills, a veteran New York Times photographer, appeared to capture the image of a bullet streaking past former President Donald J. Trump’s head.

That is the assessment of Michael Harrigan, a retired F.B.I. special agent who spent 22 years in the bureau.

“It absolutely could be showing the displacement of air due to a projectile,” Mr. Harrigan said in an interview on Saturday night after reviewing the high-resolution images that Mr. Mills filed from the rally. “The angle seems a bit low to have passed through his ear, but not impossible if the gunman fired multiple rounds.”

Simple ballistic math showed that capturing a bullet as Mr. Mills likely did in a photo was possible, Mr. Harrigan said.

Mr. Mills was using a Sony digital camera capable of capturing images at up to 30 frames per second. He took these photos with a shutter speed of 1/8,000th of a second — extremely fast by industry standards.

The other factor is the speed of the bullet from the firearm. On Saturday law enforcement authorities recovered an AR-15-type semiautomatic rifle at the scene from a deceased white man they believe was the gunman.

“If the gunman was firing an AR-15-style rifle, the .223-caliber or 5.56-millimeter bullets they use travel at roughly 3,200 feet per second when they leave the weapon’s muzzle,’’ Mr. Harrigan said. “And with a 1/8,000th of a second shutter speed, this would allow the bullet to travel approximately four-tenths of a foot while the shutter is open.”

“Most cameras used to capture images of bullets in flight are using extremely high speed specialty cameras not normally utilized for regular photography, so catching a bullet on a side trajectory as seen in that photo would be a one in a million shot and nearly impossible to catch even if one knew the bullet was coming,” he said.

In Mr. Harrigan’s last assignment, he led the bureau’s firearms training unit and currently works as a consultant in the firearms industry.

“Given the circumstances, if that’s not showing the bullet’s path through the air, I don’t know what else it would be,” he said.

'The crazy richest wedding ever': Son of Asia's richest man marries after months of lavish events

What do Mark Zuckerberg , Kim Kardashian and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson have in common? The three of them are set to attend the same wedding in India , along with plenty of other prestigious guests.

On Friday, the great and the good and a few thousand others are expected to descend on a 25-acre Mumbai convention center owned by Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in Asia . There, he’ll throw a wedding that will cost hundreds of millions of dollars and has prompted police in the city of more than 20 million to reroute traffic around the venue.

So lavish is the party — or series of parties — that the Reliance Industries chairman is hosting for his son Anant Ambani and his fiancée, Radhika Merchant, both 29, that it’s technically been going on for a week and a half.

But pre-wedding events began in March, with a Bollywood-star-studded party at which 500 dishes were served, 1,200 guests were invited and Rihanna gave only her second performance in six years.

The nuptials of Anant Ambani and Merchant — the daughter of pharmaceutical tycoon Viren Merchant — have come to symbolize the Ambani family’s power and wealth and India’s growing global clout.

Anant Ambani and his fiancée Radhika Merchant in Mumbai on July 5, 2024.

The groom’s father, 67, is the world’s ninth richest man and will be putting a small sliver of his vast wealth — widely reported to be in excess of $100 billion — to work.

The empire that Ambani and his siblings took over from their father, Dhirubhai Ambani, has operations in energy, petrochemicals, retail, telecommunications and textiles, among other industries. Ambani has already begun passing the torch to his children. Anant Ambani, 29, is a graduate of Brown University and is overseeing the conglomerate’s green energy expansion.

Critics say the company flourished due to its political connections with the Congress government in the '70s and '80s and then with Prime Minister Narendra Modi since he took office in 2014, accusations both deny.

Some have criticized such a conspicuous display of wealth amid worsening income inequality in India, where almost half the population lives on less than $3.60 — the poverty line defined by the World Bank. And the gap between the rich and the poor is so high it breaks all historical precedents, even under British colonial rule between 1858 and 1947, according to a March report by the World Inequality Lab.

Shahid Siddiqui, a former member of India’s upper house of Parliament called it the “most vulgar and ostentatious marriage ever seen,” in a post on X on Sunday.

Thomas Isaac, a former finance minister of the southern state of Kerala and a member of the Communist Party of India, also took to X to criticize the amount spent on the wedding. “Legally it may be their money but such ostentatious expenditure is a sin,” he wrote Thursday.

People walk past the Antilia mansion, house of billionaire Mukesh Ambani decorated ahead of his son Anant Ambani's wedding, in Mumbai on July 9, 2024.

An average Indian wedding can cost $33,000, with festivities lasting for days with a number of rituals and performances, according to a 2023 survey by the wedding-planning website WeddingWire.

The Ambanis — whose 27-story mansion is just 7 miles away from the Dharavi slum, depicted in the 2008 Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire,” where around 1 million people live in less than a square mile — are going above and beyond convention to say the least.

Bhavnesh Sawhney, a Mumbai-based wedding planner who has organized some of Bollywood’s biggest weddings, told NBC News He estimated the nuptials could cost up to $600 million when accounting for pre-wedding parties, entertainment, catering and the bill for 5,000 wedding vendor employees.

“It’s the craziest richest wedding ever,” he said. “I don’t think any wedding in the world or anyone has spent this kind of money in terms of expenses, magnitude, events, entertainment, decor or design.”

Artist Jagjot Singh Rubal paints Anant Ambani and his fiancée Radhika Merchant ahead of their wedding in Amritsar on July 10, 2024.

The Ambanis have developed something of a reputation over the years for throwing extravagant weddings. In 2018, when Mukesh Ambani’s daughter, Isha Ambani, 32, got married, Beyoncé performed at pre-wedding festivities and the guest list included former U.S. Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry.

This time around, the celebrations have been even more grandiose. Last week, Canadian singer Justin Bieber sang at one of the couple’s many pre-wedding parties in Mumbai. That came after a four-day pre-wedding Mediterranean cruise that drew Katy Perry , the Backstreet Boys and the Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan .

One pre-wedding get-together in March had a guestlist of 1,200 that included Ivanka Trump , Bill Gates and Google's parent company, Alphabet's CEO, Sundar Pichai .

The networking and business opportunities from hosting such an event will not be lost on the man footing the bill. The party was held at the family hometown in the western state of Gujarat.

A nearby military airfield had to be upgraded and granted temporary international status to handle the incoming fleet of private jets.

“Planning for this would have taken two years,” Sawhney said. “But when you have all the resources available to you, it’s not difficult.”

7 u.s. cities with nyc vibes, but better, 7 underrated cities in massachusetts with boston vibes, but better.

Booking a 5-star resort is usually done to avoid any type of headaches while on vacation. The simple criteria one looks for in a resort is, a great staff that takes good care of its clients, a clean facility and one you wouldn’t mind going back to when it is all done with. It’s easy to fall into the 5-star trap however. A rating and photo can be deceiving at times. Resort websites rarely update the pictures and that can lead to big time disappointment. If you really want to see what a resort is like, head over to Trip Advisor and check out their traveler reviews. The reviews tend to be honest and best of all, they are put up by travellers like us.

5-star resorts or hotels aren't exempt from criticism. We feature photos showing the resorts and hotels looking nowhere near 5-star worthy. In some instances you would think that the traveller was staying at a hostel. From outdated decor to simply outrageous maintenance, these are embarrassing photos posted by tourists showing us what some of these 5-star resorts are really like. We include common vacation hotspots in the article such as Spain, Mexico, France and various other travel locations.

Enjoy the article folks and like always be sure to pass this bit of information to a fellow friend or traveller. Without further ado here are 24 times Trip Advisor gave us a dose of what 5-star hotels are really like. Let’s get started!

24 Cuba – Iberostar Resort

The Iberostar chain is one of the most respected resort names. The decor on the outside of this particular hotel just adds to the prestige of the name. However what might be problematic is what’s going on inside.

Just think, you finished up a shower and want to wrap yourself up in a fresh and clean robe. One problem, the robe looks like it was used for at least five years, not to mention that it features some disturbing stains. The traveller was none too pleased posting the photo on Trip Advisor. How such a top notch resort can provide this type of service is beyond us.

23 Santorini, Greece – Elea Resort

Photos of the Elea Resort make it look like a destination you would never want to leave. The same can be said for Santorini in general. The Greek island is a one of a kind and a trip you’ll never forget.

It might be a little too pricey for some travellers however. This particular resort has a fee of $600 a night. You would expect quality at such a rate. A traveller posted a photo that tells us otherwise. One of the beach chairs on the outside by the pool looks to be of the lower caliber and significantly outdated. Now that might cut it for a three star hotel but not one with a price tag of $600 per night. It’s an embarrassment.

This is what the resort in question looks like:

22 Punta Cana – Riu Hotel La Altagracia

Riu chains tend to be among the most trusted travelling names. When it comes to food Riu has a strong reputation. However the same could not be said for this traveller’s experience at the Riu in Punta Cana. In particular the food was a complete disaster. Both the pork and the steak were a major letdown and basically raw, according to the review. To her credit, the traveller praised the hotel quality.

The rooms and pool area are said to be stunning - though in truth the food hurt the trip experience. Unless you just plan on eating bread, perhaps you should side step this resort.

21 Paris, France – The Peninsula Hotel

The Peninsula looks like a cathedral on the inside however a certain tourist pointed out that it isn’t even worthy of a 3-star rating. According to the review the Paris crew was not the friendliest and neither was the quality of the room. From the stained vanity to the electrical problems with the room - it was a pretty horrifying experience for the said traveller.

Making matters worse it took two days for the hotel to figure out the room problem. If you are looking for quality in a hotel from the workers in particular you might want to skip out on this expensive Paris hotel.

It's beautiful on the outside, but this traveller might beg to differ...

20 Thailand – View Point Resort

Thailand is a beautiful vacation destination. Not only is it cheap but the vacation spot is one you’ll never forget. One must be careful when booking hotels however. According to this Trip Advisor traveller some high priced hotels aren’t as prestigious as they might seem to be.

Unless you enjoy the company of rats, the fact that they made their way into the room really doesn’t scream out 5-star resort. A traveller posted a photo of the damage done by the rats. The review gave it one-star. Without a doubt that isn’t something any traveller wants to experience while in the comfort of their own room, 5-star hotel or not.

19 Punta Cana – Grand Bahia Principe

Just imagine booking a five star resort and having to tell the employee to clean the pool! The sad reality came true for a traveller as she posted the disturbing photo to Trip Advisor.

According to the review the staff wasn’t any better either. It took forever to get a drink and making matters worse the hotel did very little to accommodate the newly engaged couple. Hotels usually make it a priority to offer a complimentary bottle of Champaign. At a 5-star hotel you would think that would take place but it did not. The review called the hotel service a two star at best and we can’t blame the person.

18 Barcelona, Spain – Oasis Catalonia Hotel

The Sagrada Familia and Park Guell are a couple of reasons to visit the beautiful Barcelona, Spain area. In terms of lodging hotels really aren’t all that hard to find. However be aware, not every 5-star hotel seems to be worthy of the rating.

This particular traveller posted a disturbing photo of the Oasis bathroom. The tub ledge is absolutely disgusting with yellow rust on the end of it. You expect that in a one-star motel but not a top notch resort like the Catalonia Hotel. Upgrades are needed once in a while - we hope the hotel got that message.

17 Ibiza, Spain – Ibiza Gran Hotel Balearic Islands

Ibiza is one of the most desired vacation spots. The area includes a wide range of resorts both of the top quality and lower scale. The Gran Hotel in the Balearic Islands is regarded as one of the very best, especially looking at the resort from the outside. However, this Trip Advisor traveller gave us a healthy dose of reality.

The hotel claims that the beds are “King Size”. Perhaps the hotel isn’t aware that King Size tends to be double the size of the actual bed photographed. Travellers also complained about the lack of service at the hotel. If you like your sleeping space you might be disappointed by this high quality hotel.

16 Dubai – Dubai Marine Beach Resort and Spa

A bad resort in Dubai? We must be dreaming. However reviews for this top hotel haven’t been the greatest. Travellers have complained about the lackluster service and the untidy rooms.

However this particular review takes the cake showing a photo of construction taking place near the resort. Just imagine you’re in Dubai trying to relax and enjoy the view but in the background is loud construction noises and heavy machinery obstructing the beauty that is Dubai. That doesn’t sound like something most of us would want to book – especially when the most important part of a trip is trying to enjoy some relax time by the beach.

15 Hungary – New York Residence Budapest

Make a quick search and this hotel looks like a prestigious 5-star that most of us would stay at without hesitation. However what’s in the rooms might be worth looking into. A traveller posted an awful photo of the terrible room shower. Not only is it outdated but the reviewer also mentions that it was “moldy”.

The hotel setting isn’t the most prestigious either located in back of an abandoned building. Also no slippers or robes were given. That’s usually one of the first things you see when entering a room and that’s especially true for a five star hotel. At least the person could have worn the slippers while showering...

14 Ibiza, Spain – Destino Pacha Ibiza Resort

The Destino Pacha resort is another high rated hotel in the Ibiza area. The price tag isn’t cheap and neither is the stunning decor on the outside. A traveller pointed out that things aren’t the same on the inside. The post showed a disturbing shot of ants coming out of the wall. It wasn’t just one ant, but a family of ants.

At a high quality resort, that should not be tolerated by any means. The photo gave lots of travellers a healthy dose of reality in the sense that looks can sometimes be deceiving.

13 Mexico – Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa

Canadians and Americans love to visit Mexico during the holiday seasons. It’s a close trip and a reliable destination. However travellers should be aware that not every 5-star resort meets the criteria. The Grand Sirenis is another hotel that looks magnificent on the outside by according to Trip Advisor members the inside isn’t as captivating.

This traveller puts out a disturbing photo of water that clearly isn’t the color it is supposed to be. Now we understand water can be problematic in Mexico but a brown color in the tub takes things a tad too far. The photo looks as though it was taken at a Motel in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

12 Cyprus – Constantinos Great Beach Hotel

Cyprus is a post-card-worthy vacation destination when done correctly. The Great Beach hotel needs to be avoided if you like modern decor and hotels that are actually worthy of 5-stars. Photos of the hotel on the inside are extremely disappointing. Based off of the outdated decor alone, the resort is worthy of less than 3-stars.

Making matters worse the walls include holes in them. The carpets also look incredibly old with noticeable tears in them. The outside looks decent but the rooms inside are nothing close to what a 5-star in Cyprus should be like.

11 United Arab Emirates – Hilton Sharjah

Looking at the stunning outside decor and building you would think that the Hilton was worthy of the rating. A traveller gave us a sneak peek of the inside and let’s just say it was even worse than underwhelming.

First off the torn couch looks like something we would find in the basement of our grandparent's home and not a 5-star hotel. As if that wasn’t bad enough the Trip Advisor traveler posted other lackluster photos of a stained carpet and yes another dirty bathtub. All this makes the hotel less than underwhelming.

10 Curacao – Baoase Luxury Resort

When you attach the term “luxury” to your resort, those are some big shoes to fill. The photo above was only the beginning of this traveller’s problems at the resort. Not only were cans of paint and tools left in the lobby area but other ridiculous problems included no hot water in the hot tub and constant construction. Things got so out of hand that construction workers were actually hammering outside of the couple’s room on the balcony!

On the bright side the resort was said to have been beautiful but the overall experience was definitely not.

9 Dublin, Ireland – Hotel Dublin Country

From museums to pubs to castles to stunning parks, Dublin is another great vacation spot. If you want something other than a beach, Dublin, Ireland offers an optimal experience with lots to see. Just be sure you book wisely when searching for proper lodging.

Hotel Dublin Country might have to be a destination to leap over. It has a strong rating but that isn’t comparable to some of the Trip Advisor reviews. One of the photos shows the disturbing conditions of both walls and ceilings that are filled with holes likely created by insects or due to the outdated texture. Tourists that love sleek and modern decor need to avoid this hotel.

8 Varadero, Cuba – Hicacos Varadero Resort Spa

According to this traveller, his time at the Varadero Hicacos is remembered as a disaster more so than anything else. Once again constant construction hurt the trip experience. At a 5-star hotel this should not be tolerated. Making matters worse the maintenance was not up to par either.

Garbage bins were said be full on the regular and as if that was demoralizing enough some of the pools had no water in them. The inside was not a pretty sight as you see in the photo above. Cuba is an easy trip if you want to enjoy a nice beach and sleek beach water. However do your research before booking a high quality resort.

7 Bali, Indonesia – Ayodya Resort

Beautiful Bali can be a trip experience that you’ll never forget. We hope that’s in the best way possible and not like this Trip Advisor review by a tourist. According to the traveller the hotel was extremely outdated with water taps that didn’t work. The room wasn’t up to par despite the fact that half the hotel was empty.

The major kick in the gut is the beach. As you saw in the photo above it was filled with garbage. It is a problem in the area but seriously, could the hotel staff not have at least cleaned up a little? When asked, the hotel staff laughed claiming it was a reoccurring question..... Not a good response.

And it certainly wasn't advertised...

6 Uruguay – Laguna Garzon Lodge

A 5-star price for a room that wasn’t even hostel-worthy? Yikes! This is what one of the reviews had to say when discussing the Laguna Garzon Lodge. You can't deny the traveller’s point. The pictures clearly show the outdated facility. The wooden area on the outside looks as though it hasn’t been revamped or at least repainted in several decades.

Making matters worse the room maintenance was terrible and the ultimate low of the traveller's experience. Stained towels and terrible breakfast options sunk the resort even further according to the review.

5 Singapore – Park Royal Reach Resort

Proper room maintenance and cleanness are just a couple of features to expect when visiting a 5-star hotel. Unfortunately this Sigapore hotel didn't check off any of those things. The room seemed to be extremely outdated. The counters featured several chips.

Making matters worse the room maintenance wasn’t any better. The tourist found a past receipt under the counter from a person the used the room prior. When asked to have the room re-cleaned, the bill was still there and the cleaning crew was said to be very disrespectful. This hotel definitely doesn’t seem 5-star worthy in terms of service alone.
