Sequoia Grove
8338 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford
(707) 944-2945
Why Guests Love It: Classic Cabernets, Boutique Feel, Food & Wine Pairings
Sequoia Grove is almost the little engine that could in Napa, not because it’s any less mighty but because it’s lowkey and relaxed. It’s definitely worth stopping in, though, because the wood-timber building surrounded by sequoias and cypresses gives a distinctive Northern Californian feel. Everything produced is fantastic but take note of the quintessential cedar notes in their Cabs. They’re a standout.
Grgich Hills
1829 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford
(707) 963-2784
Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Picnic Tastings, Eco-Focused
Named after its founders, Mike Grgich and Austin Hills, Grgich Hills is one of the more legendary wineries in Napa. Freemark Abbey
3022 St Helena Hwy N, St Helena
(800) 963-9698
Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Stunning Architecture, Library Wines
Housed in a historic stone building that dates back to 1899, Freemark Abbey has consistently been a winery for over a century (except that during that little hiccup known as Prohibition). It further cemented its name in oenological history by being one of only twelve wineries invited to compete in the 1976 Judgement of Paris. Today, the wines remain standouts and tasting here brings guests on a trip through Napa history.

Tank Garage Winery
1020 Foothill Blvd, Calistoga
(707) 942-8265
Why Guests Love It: Art Deco Architecture, Intriguing Wines, Small Production
Of all wine tasting experiences through Napa, Tank Garage is probably the most unique because it’s located in a 1930s Art Deco gas station! Tank isn’t for the faint-of-heart – the people there are known for sprinkling salty language around, but they sure provide a fun experience. The wines are just as interesting with everything from orange pét-nat to carbonic Grenache.
Top Napa Wineries along the Silverado Trail
Silverado Trail runs somewhat parallel to St Helena Highway on the east side of Napa. The two are close enough together to make it very easy to toggle between, but Silverado is decidedly quieter because village centers are found on St Helena Highway.

8383 Silverado Trail, Napa
(707) 963-5188
Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Organic Farming, Warm Hospitality
Although technically in another town, ZD is just down the road from Mumm and is definitely worth the stop. 4240 Silverado Trail, Napa
(707) 257-2345
Why Guests Love It: Stunning Architecture, Luxurious Pairings, Exceptional Service
Darioush is sort of like Madonna or Cher in that it needs no other name: Darioush is enough. And, for those that know it, the name Darioush means opulence and grandeur unlike anything else in Napa. Grounded in Persian culture, hospitality is elevated to an art form here. Be sure to reserve the Signature Mezza tasting to try the wines alongside traditional Persian mezze plates.
Judd’s Hill Winery & MicroCrush
2332 Silverado Trail, Napa
(707) 255-2332
Why Guests Love It: Small Production, Family Owned, Relaxed Environment
Judd’s Hill is an anomaly in Napa because it’s lowkey and very hands on. Still family owned, guests are encouraged to book tastings, pairings, or even play winemaker and blend their own wines! Another charming experience is their annual poetry contest, for which winners receive a 3-liter bottle but the real prize is being part of this 20+ year tradition.

Travel Logistics: Getting To and Around Napa
Napa the city is towards the southern end of Napa the valley and is only about an hour north of San Francisco. Visitors coming from further afield can fly to either San Francisco International Airport or Oakland International Airport and drive from there. Since it is a quick jaunt from the Bay Area, it tends to be very busy on the weekends so midweek tastings often are the most relaxing (and available). You can check current flight deals into either airport right here.
Napa is also quite close to Sonoma Valley, which runs parallel on the west. However, mountain passes between the two are often very windy and can be quite dangerous to navigate, particularly at night. We recommend focusing on one valley or the other to fully enjoy the experience. Another great option is to leverage Green Dream Tours’ expertise to get a taste of both Napa and Sonoma on the same day. They offer round-trip transport from San Francisco, stopping at some exceptional boutique wineries in Sonoma and Napa.

When planning your visit to Napa wineries, start by researching the wineries you’d like to visit, as there are over 400 to choose from. Consider factors such as the types of wines you enjoy, the winery’s ambiance, and any special experiences they offer. We list most of the best wineries in Napa and group them by location to create an efficient itinerary. Read our detailed guide to help you plan your trip. Keep in mind that many wineries in Napa require reservations for tastings and tours, so be sure to book ahead.
How many Napa wineries should I visit in one day?
To fully enjoy your Napa wine tasting experience without feeling rushed, it’s generally recommended to visit 3-5 wineries in one day. This allows ample time to savor the wines, explore the properties, and take breaks for meals or relaxation. However, be sure to have a designated driver on hand or hire one of our preferred drivers or private tours referenced in this guide.
What are the costs associated with wine tasting in Napa?
Tasting fees at Napa wineries can vary widely, typically ranging from $25 to $50 per person, with some high-end or exclusive wineries charging even more. Some wineries offer tastings that are refundable with a wine purchase, while others may waive the fee for wine club members. Guided tours, food pairings, and special experiences may come at an additional cost. To manage expenses, consider setting a daily budget for tastings and prioritize wineries that best align with your preferences.
How should I get around Napa Valley when visiting wineries?
There are several transportation options for exploring Napa wineries, including self-driving, hiring a private driver or tour guide, joining a group wine tour, or using a designated driver service. Each option has its advantages and drawbacks, but it’s crucial to ensure responsible and safe transportation, especially if you plan to consume alcohol during your tastings. We give Winetravelers plenty of options in this guide to get around to Napa’s best wineries safely. Ask us any questions or for recommendations in the guide’s comments.

~ Specializing in Custom Wine Tours Guided by a Napa Native ~
"Napa Valley Wine Excursions is the ONLY tour company I will ever use again in wine country. Our family had an amazing experience with the tour, the wineries, the service. There is not a rating high enough to give this company. From the moment we arrived till the moment we left, it was one of the best experiences we have ever had while on vacation. The service was phenomenal. I would say, 'It's like the French Laundry of tour companies.'
You will not be disappointed." ~ L. Ayers, NC (March, 2020)
With over five hundred wineries in the Napa Valley and nearly four hundred in Sonoma , planning the perfect trip to Wine Country can be overwhelming. The 10 best Napa Valley wine tours to sip and see Wine Country
There are many ways to drink wine in Napa. Try one of these Napa Valley wine tours via hot air balloon, vintage train or stylish tuk-tuk.
One of the easiest ways to experience Napa Valley is on a fun tour. If you're planning to drive through Wine Country, consider booking an informative tour and tasting at one of the best wineries in Napa . If you'd rather leave the car behind, you can board a train, zip around on a Segway, peddle through the vineyards on a bicycle or take in the view of the valley from a hot air balloon. A standard Napa Valley wine tour will cover the history of the winery and explain how wine is made, but may also include venturing into the cellars, vineyards, and even a museum or art gallery before ending with a wine tasting. Afterwards, sit down at one of the best restaurants in Napa before you head home.

Had a great experience with Mr. Abe our driver. He was kind and funny. We went to three wineries and ate lunch at the second one. Everything was perfectly executed. I recommend this place.

Love this company and the service. We use them every year when we go to Havana Nights at the castle and will continue to do so!
We toured on a Monday with a full group! Our driver Abe was very kind, funny and professional. The first winery we stopped at was our favorite but the other two were great as well. We would definitely book with this company again if they change up the winery stops! Lunch was provided at the second location and we had Panera box lunches. Only thing to note, we got an email saying we'd have a 10am pickup and we got the call for pickup at 9am. We were ready so it was fine, but something to be aware of!!
Helped my boss book a day trip in Napa and it was pretty last minute, only two days before and had nothing on the itinerary. Worked with one of the concierges and she was able to pull together an itinerary within a day for a party of 10 that included a small child (which some wineries don't allow) and find dinner reservations for a party of 12. Driver called a day ahead to check in and the day included three wineries and dinner. The party had a great time. Couldn't have done it without Napa Valley Wine Country Tours!
My sisters and I all live in different states but make it a point to go on a trip each year. Never having been to Napa we were excited for the views and of course the wine. Our driver Zedan, picked us up promptly and gave us the run down of our day. He let one of my sisters DJ which was epic. Once we arrived at the first winery he asked to take photos of us at two different locations and every photo came out great! Black stallion had amazing wine and our server was very friendly. The second stop was the Pestoni winery and we had a blast. This was my favorite one, their was an impeccable view and corn hole and Zedan brought us a delicious lunch to enjoy with our wine. We were pretty out of it by the last winery , so thankful to Zedan for being such a caring and professional gentleman. His conversation and fun personality made this tour memorable for my sisters and I. Zedan is the man!!!
Pestoni Winery
Working with scheduling our trip to Napa with George was excellent. George was super professional, WELL informed, SUPER experience and always very pleasant and helpful in every way. He set us up with the BEST itinerary. George explained everything to the last detail. No surprises. We were picked up in a beautiful Mercedes Sprinter Limo Bus which sat us 9 perfectly and our driver Kurt was amazing !! Professional, helpful, polite and went above and beyond to help make our day so wonderful. I would really like to thank Napa Valley Wine Country Tours for the absolute best service and they scheduled us excellent places to go and Kurt (the driver) was ON IT. Super professional. I highly highly highly recommend them. Excellent 100%.
Abe is the funniest driver we've had. Good deal for having a DD and the wine was amazing. The first stop on the tour was my favorite and most affordable. Second stop was good, third spot was pretty pricey
James was our fantastic driver for the day! He picked us up from Burlingame to go to Bouchaine Vineyards and we made a stop in Oakland at a commercial business on the way. Easy to communicate with and even provided refreshments on board while allowing us to connect our phones to listen to music on the drive. 30 minutes before pick up, he would send a courtesy text and was right on time. He was extremely nice and was a very safe driver, I hope we can book James again in the future! :)
Thank you for hosting our group of 25 yesterday for wine tasting! David was our driver and was very personable and funny as well as keeping us on track as we had a tight tasting schedule. Would definitely recommend Napa Valley Wine Country Tours for any time we are back in Napa!
I've utilized their services twice now and couldn't be happier. The first time around, a group of 17 of us rented a limo style bus with George as our driver. We were picked up at the location of our choice and it was smooth sailing from there. You could definitely ask the company to make you an itinerary or give suggestions. I decided to have my own go at certain spots. We had 4 wineries and 1 restaurant lined up. George was extremely flexible but also ensured that we stayed on schedule for our appointments. We even requested to make a last minute stop at bouchon bakery and he had zero problem in doing so. Excellent driver with a personality that all my gals loved! On our 2nd go around, we had a smaller limo sprinter which was perfect for the 9 of us. We had David as our driver. Also very friendly and flexible. This time, we left the itinerary up to them and we were delightfully surprised and happy with the choices. Prices are very reasonable. 5 solid stars and definitely requesting George or David again in the future.

Thank you for stopping by and for your interest in my Napa Valley wine tours!

I have *an extremely unique point of view into the Napa Valley from a winery perspective*, as I have personally visited, tasted with and written more than 1,090 commercial wine producers (wineries, physical or virtual) in Napa over the past 15+ years - CLICK HERE . As a result I have a plethora of resources to draw from in regards to customizing any tour to the Napa Valley.
All tours are private for your party.
A typical tour will last between 6-9 hours; the day is yours, tours can be shortened or increased as needed.
If you are a collector and are interested in purchasing wines for your cellar, I have contacts at some of Napa's most exclusive wineries. I can also setup exclusive & memorable food + wine experiences. Lets talk.
I can setup special tours based on a number of criteria. Want the wineries with the best tours, romance or views? I know these specific wineries and can make the appointments. Advance notice of at least a week is desirable for an appointment only winery tour and more during the busy summer months (especially weekends).
Our tours are relaxed and geared to your interests. Options besides wine tasting include sightseeing (Old Faithful Geyser, Petrified Forest, diRosa Art Preserve, etc) and hiking near Mt. St. Helena. We can also tour through some of Napa's towns including Calistoga and St. Helena.
I know the Napa Valley inside and out, numerous wine makers and tasting experiences that are genuine. I enjoy guiding and providing information about this incredible place. Have your own list of wineries? I would be happy to give you comments.
Any and all levels of wine education are perfectly fine.

Exploring Napa Valley: A Guide For A Romantic 3-Day Getaway
Posted: May 7, 2024 | Last updated: May 7, 2024
Every year, my husband and I plan a romantic trip somewhere to celebrate our anniversary. As lovers of excellent wine, beautiful countryside, and delicious food, we chose to take a quick getaway to Napa Valley.
One of the world's premier wine destinations, the region boasts more than 400 wineries and tasting rooms. Enthusiasts can stroll through grape vineyards, learn about the art of winemaking from area experts and sommeliers, and absorb the breathtaking hillside views while sipping award-winning Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, Pinot Noirs, and many other varietals.
We planned three days of activities filled with excellent meals from some of the best restaurants in the country, a little shopping, relaxation by the hotel pool, and, of course, the most incredible winery tours and tastings—and some not-so-incredible ones, either.
Where To Stay
The Napa Valley Region consists of several small towns next door to each other. The principal towns are Napa, St. Helena, Yountville, and Calistoga, alongside a smattering of smaller towns sprinkled throughout. Each city offers several modern hotels, Airbnbs, and luxurious resorts.
We chose to book our stay at the Meadowood Resort in St. Helena mainly because we heard a rumor that Robert Redford stays there when he's in town. Alas, there were no star sightings during our stay. Meadowood is an understated but elegant resort set in the trees of the estate grounds. They offer 36 suites and rooms that combine the Valley's rustic elements while paying close attention to details of comfort and sophisticated style.
The resort boasts several amenities, such as the beautiful pool surrounded by the most delicious-smelling honeysuckle, spa, terrace cafe, main restaurant (which actually caught fire several years ago and is still under renovation), tennis courts, fitness facility, hiking throughout the estate grounds, and, naturally, their wine tasting center.
Each morning, we enjoyed a healthy breakfast on the terrace, including a fabulous salmon eggs benedict, bright microgreens salad, and fresh fruit. One rainy afternoon, we ordered their excellent room service after a wine tour earlier in the day before heading out again.
The Wineries: Our Top Picks
As previously mentioned, Napa Valley has hundreds of wineries to choose from. So how do you decide? It's not easy, I'll tell you that. We read countless reviews and got suggestions from friends who had already visited the region.
It was also essential for us to choose places that made wines that we liked to drink. For example, neither one of us is a fan of Merlot, so we eliminated vineyards that focused on that grape varietal.
Three days in Napa can either be too long or not enough time, depending on how you structure your itinerary. First, we should have booked fewer wine tastings in a day. We scheduled three daily with breaks in between, but visiting two a day would have been much better.
Round Pond Estates
I can't say enough good things about Round Pond Estates . As you turn onto the long driveway lined with magnificent palm trees, you are overwhelmed with the beauty of the grounds. Owned by second-generation family members, the estate has been a premier maker of Cabernet Sauvignon in the Rutherford region for over 40 years.
We had made reservations in advance, which is highly recommended, and were seated on the upper deck of the outside terrace. We were greeted by a warm and inviting fire and a top-notch Sommelier who shared the vineyard's history with us. The experience was extraordinary, and the four wines we tasted paired with a charcuterie board were exceptional. Afterward, we strolled through the gardens that provide various delicious fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
The Prisoner Wine Company
Deriving its brand name and aesthetic from the famous painting Le Petit Prisonnier by 19th-century Spanish artist Francisco Goya, the Prisoner Wine Company produces a complex blend of California's most unusual grape varietals. We enjoyed their wines and the wine educator so much that we signed up for the quarterly wine club.
Their wine-tasting venue is located on the legendary scenic Hwy29 in the heart of the Valley and welcomes visitors all year round for immersive experiences. The industrial styling, with rich red, black, and silver tapestries and black leather and metal furniture, encapsulates the inspiring artwork of the flagship label. We loved this winery so much that we signed up for their wine club and have exceptional red wine delivered to our home quarterly.
Entering the Peju Estate feels like entering a fairytale set in the hills of Italy. From the 50-foot stone tower with its grand wooden door and copper roof to the immaculately pruned trees cascading over the drive to the many impressive sculptures that adorn the serene grounds, Peju is magical.
The knowledgeable staff will walk you through the history of Napa Valley and how Peju's founder was instrumental in developing the concept of Direct-To-Consumer Wine Marketing and the craft of winemaking while you enjoy their crisp white varietals, such as Sauvignon Blanc (my personal favorite) and dry Rose.
Pride Mountain
Pride Mountain Vineyards is the most scenic and romantic vineyard in Napa Valley. The picturesque and curvy drive to the top of the mountain is breathtaking in and of itself; however, the winery and cellars are something you must see to believe. Straddling the county lines of both Napa and Sonoma, Pride produces wine from varietals from both regions, making its wines unlike any others.
Visitors can book appointments for a variety of experiences. We chose to tour the estate and the underground cellars and have a private tasting in the charming gathering room, which overlooks the vineyards. Everything about the experience was perfection.
Our Least Favorite: Domaine Carneros
Who doesn't love champagne, or, as non-French people call it, "sparkling wine?" We were excited to check out Domaine Carneros , the premier sparkling wine vineyard in the region. The grounds were reminiscent of Versailles, with opulent architecture and beautifully maintained greenery. However, it was like going to Disney World for adults.
The number of bachelorette parties in attendance, with their gaudy hats, sashes, and matching outfits, and actual families with small children were obnoxious and detracted from the ambiance of the experience. The staff needed to be more knowledgeable about the products, and it felt more like a regular restaurant experience than an actual tasting. If you're looking to up your wine game and come away with more information, this isn't your place. However, it'll be right up your alley if you're looking for an Instagram moment.
Top Notch Noshing
The Napa Valley Region is home to several delicious restaurants, ranging from reasonably priced to extravagant. The acclaimed French Laundry, a Thomas Keller establishment, is rated as one of the best restaurants in the United States. However, it was virtually impossible to get a reservation there, so we skipped it. If you can score a spot, do it! Although, we still had some excellent meals outside of the wineries.
We reserved a table for our anniversary dinner at another of Keller's restaurants, Bouchon . Located in Yountville, this charming bistro excels at French fare with its attention to ingredients and presentation. Although its seasonal menu often changes, it boasts staples such as leg of lamb, roasted chicken, and trout amandine year-round.
I enjoyed the delectable Saumon en Écailles de Pommes de Terre, which is potato-scaled Scottish salmon, melted leeks, new crop potatoes, and fines herbes cream, while my husband devoured the Moules au Safran Maine, a dish consisting of bouchot mussels steamed with white wine, Dijon mustard, and saffron and served with French fries. We shared a bottle of the region's refreshing Sauvignon Blanc.
Gott's Roadside
You can't visit Napa without stopping by Gott's Roadside . This outdoor, counter-service restaurant has been in business since 1999 and serves typical diner fare, such as chili cheese dogs, Western bacon cheeseburgers, and fresh salads.
We stopped by on our way to Pride Mountain, and it was an indulgent treat that we thoroughly enjoyed. Make sure you order a soft-serve cone before you leave. You won't regret it.
The Charter Oak
Due to the restaurant at Meadowood not being in production, we chose to eat at their sister restaurant in town during our visit. The Charter Oak is a charming, rustic farm-to-market restaurant in St. Helena.
Michelin star recipient Chef Christopher Kostow creates delightful dishes featuring perfectly grilled meats and flavorful vegetables harvested from the restaurant's farm. The menu has excellent local wine choices and unparalleled cocktails.
California's Napa Valley is a superb destination for a romantic getaway. It offers a variety of things to do, from its scenic path along the Silverado Trail, with countless vineyards lining either side of the road, to the wine train that winds through the valley while you enjoy an epicurean journey.
Be sure to reserve your winery tours before visiting to ensure you get the most out of your experience. I also recommend hiring a driver so you can fully participate in each tasting.
