PEPPER FARM – SEE HOW PEPPER IS GROWN (IN SEASON ONLY)

PEPPER FARM – SEE HOW PEPPER IS GROWN (IN SEASON ONLY) Cambodia has long been known for having the best pepper in the world. At the beginning of the 20th century Cambodia was exporting around 8000 tons of Kampot pepper. In the 1960 there were still 1 million pepper poles in Kampot, producing around 1000 tons. After the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime, only 4 tons were harvested by the end of the 90’s. Now Pepper is a significant source of income for Khmer people, and is used frequently in local cuisine

Samdach Chea Sim Primary school

travel agency in sihanoukville

Well, Education in Cambodia is divided into Pre-school, Primary school, Secondary school, High school and Higher Education. There are two shifts, the morning shift and the afternoon shift. The morning shift starts from 7 o’clock to 11 o’clock and the afternoon shift starts from 1 o’clock to 5 o’clock. The schooldays in Cambodia are from Monday to Saturday morning.

There are five subjects in Primary school: Mathematics, Khmer study, Science, Social study and Sports. The students have to study for six years from Grade 1 to Grade 6 and then they will go to secondary school if they pass the final exam. Three years in Secondary school from Grade 7 to Grade 9 and the other three years for High school from Grade 10 to Grade 12. Thus, that means students spend 12 years before going to Higher Education.

The students wear white shirts with black or blue trousers or skirts and they are allowed to start school until they are from six to thirteen years old. Students go to school by walking and bicycle. In Cambodia schools are free to everyone, so we do not have to pay for the school except the private schools. To get success in study students do not only base on the teachers but also their parents’ motivation or encouragement. Cambodia is a kind of mixed classes- boys can study with girls and girls can go with boys.

Finally, Education in Cambodia is getting better and better and we have more schools than in the Khmer Rouge regime or in the past time.

CAMBODIAN VISAS

Upon arrival at any International border crossing or International airport you can obtain a visa for entry to Cambodia. The process is simple.

Two types of visa are available – TOURIST & ORDINARY (formerly called a business visa). On the visa application form you simply check the box for whichever visa you wish to apply.

TOURIST VISA - $30 USD valid for stay of 1 month and can be extended only 1 time for 1 month.

ORDINARY VISA - $35 USD valid for stay of 1 month and can be extended for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months.

For both types of visa you are required to supply a passport sized photo. There is no requirement for any other paperwork

E-VISA - can be obtained online at https://www.evisa.gov.kh/

This electronic visa is a tourist visa and can be extended for 1 month only 1 time and costs $38.

EXTENSIONS can be obtained at the immigration office near the airport in Phnom Penh and will take around 2 to 3 weeks to process. There is no list of charges available. This is why visa extensions are usually done with the service of a travel agent.

1 month and 3 month visas are single-entry; 6 and 12 month visas are multiple entry. There are no restrictions on the number of extensions you can have.

VISA OVERSTAY is charged at $10 for every day that your visa has expired when you extend or exit the country. This is not a problem for short overstays (under 30 days) and will not cause any problem in the future.

Some overland exit points might try to impose a fine for not having a valid visa. This is not legal.

The first visa is always valid for only 1 month . On the visa there is a start date, this is the date that you may enter from, not the visa start date.

Overseas embassies, border crossings, agencies etc can not provide you with a 3 month or more visa.

Beware …. many people have been led to believe that they have a visa valid for 3 months only to find that it is valid for only 1 month.

At the time of entry at an airport or border crossing, the immigration officer will put 2 date stamps in your passport. 1 stamp will be on your departure card that is stapled into your passport, the other will be on a page usually opposite the page with the visa. Be sure to check that these dates are correct. Mistakes can be made. These dates are your date of entry and the duration of your stay – normally 1 month.

If arriving by land, the immigration officers or their “assistants” will often charge more for your visa. At the Hat Lek/Koh Kong border crossing from Thailand, they will demand payment in Thai Baht and will ask for 1500THB for a tourist visa and 1800THB for a Ordinary visa. This is a well known scam that has been operated for many years.

Most border crossings will request a small fee for their service.

The “extra” charges are well reported in publications like The Lonely Planet and many internet sites. Please refer to these for specific advice.

Sihanoukville beach

Visit Sihanoukville, Cambodia

  • Accommodation
  • Things to do

Built around a deep-water port, Sihanoukville is a large industrial city that has succumbed to the dubious allure of cheap travel — backpackers, casinos and budget hotels abound. However, it’s a convenient doorway to the nearby islands of the Koh Rong Archipelago.

This string of islands, stretched out across the mouth of the Bay of Kompong Som, is named after the largest island in the chain. Even in an area known for its beaches, Koh Rong stands out. The silky, sugar-fine beaches stretch for miles and feathery palm fronds cast dappled shade on the sand, which slopes gently down into brilliantly blue waters.

The white sands and azure waters of Sihanoukville

Located a short ferry ride from Sihanoukville, Koh Rong also offers options beyond the beach. The waters support schools of iridescent fish, bright corals, delicate seahorses and cartoonish nudibranchs, which you can admire on a snorkel or dive. Equipment rentals are available on the island. Many snorkelling trips also include an after-dark boat trip to see the glowing plankton that limns the waves with an eerie luminescence. You can visit nearby islands by longboat, trying your hand at the local fishing techniques.

Hotels here range from inexpensive to indulgent. We suggest the Royal Sands, which offers beachside private bungalows and a spa, as well as an infinity pool.

Just off the northeast coast of Koh Rong, Song Saa is a pair of tiny private islands linked by a footbridge. The name is Khmer for ‘the sweethearts’. On the southerly island, you’ll find sybaritic bungalows decorated with driftwood furniture and upcycled wood, some on stilts over clear turquoise waters.

Just a brief walk away, across a curved wooden bridge, is a nature reserve. Here, you can spot kingfishers, sea eagles and Malaysian plovers with a trained member of the hotel’s conservation team.

Best time to visit Sihanoukville

We suggest visiting Sihanoukville between November and April, when the skies are blue and the humidity is low. Temperatures begin at a comfortable 25°C (77°F) and rise steadily until they reach a sizzling 33°C (91°F) by April.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Weather and Best Time to Visit: Sihanoukville Tourism And Travel Guide

Owing to its proximity to coastal waters, Sihanoukville experiences a tropical climate. The southwest monsoon winds help form two main seasons in the city, the dry season and the wet season. The sunny weather of the dry season proves to be the best time of the year to pay a visit to this beach haven.

Dry Season (October to Early May): The months between November and February form the best time of the year to pay a visit to Sihanoukville, thanks to the warm temperatures. With a climate usually witnessing temperatures close to 30°C, the dry season is an apt time for tourists to explore the splendid beaches of the city. This season is the perfect time to soak in some bright sunlight at beaches studded with white sands.

Wet Season (Early May to September): Thanks to the tropical essence of Sihanoukville, its wet season witnesses short bouts of rainfall and humidity. However, the fact that this season is not the peak time for visiting Sihanoukville means that tourists can explore sites amidst lesser crowds. The offseason also provides them with inexpensive stays at the beautiful beach resorts of the city.

What to Eat: Sihanoukville Tourism And Travel Guide

Sihanoukville oozes Khmer touch with the constant presence of delicacies such as Banana Flower Salad, Spring Rolls, and Lok-Lak in the local diet. Kompong Som

"beaches, seafood and nightlife", sihanoukville tourism.

Sihanoukville is a coastal city in southwest Cambodia, about five hours by road from Phnom Penh. Serviced by Sihanoukville International Airport, it is the most popular seaside destination in the country. The city is known for its vast coastline, home to untouched and magnificent beaches, restaurants and cafes serving delicious seafood cuisines and arguably the country's best nightlife. Tourists also visit Sihanoukville to enjoy watersports, games, and boat trips to the surrounding islands.

Once a vital trading port for Cambodia, Sihanoukville has grown into a backpacker haven offering some of the best seaside experiences at affordable prices. Visitors can find plenty of cheap guesthouses and hostels to stay the night over and bars that stay open well into the night. However, as one goes further south of the city, the beaches become more relaxed and give away to more posh resorts and other accommodation options. Sihanoukville is a staging point for trips to nearby islands, which are largely untouched, with some offering great accommodation. For those who wish to cast away from the shoreline and enjoy a tropical vacation in peace, this is something which cannot be recommended enough. Scuba diving is also quite popular with PADI-certified schools and tour operators offering liveaboard trips on the regular.

More on Sihanoukville Travel

Nightlife in sihanoukville.

The city offers a pretty good nightlife in Ochheuteal, Serendipity and Victory Beaches with all beach sidebars as well as those in downtown that serve fresh brews and have musical and dance floors open until the early hours of the morning. However, if you want to have a simple holiday in a quieter place, Otres beach is a place which has cheap and minimalistic guest houses overlooking the sea.

3-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1: Visit Wat Leu Temple in the morning. Then head to Koh Thmei and Koh Pos beaches for watersports or relaxing. Shop at night in Otres market and enjoy seafood dinner at any of the beachside restaurants.
  • Day 2 : Head to Bamboo Island or Koh Russei during the day. Come back in the evening for shopping at the local Phsar Leu Market. Enjoy seafood for dinner in the bars along with some drinks.
  • Day 3: Visit Ream National Park to explore all the attractions. In the evening head to Serendipity and Ochheuteal beaches for unwinding and enjoying the sunset.

Travel Tips

  • It is best to drink during the happy hour sessions offered by the bars and drink outlets. As drinks are cheap, one can get carried away and rack up a hefty bill.
  • Most of the casinos in the town are forbidden for tourists as well as locals, admitting only the Chinese. It is best to check before entering to avoid any conflicts.
  • Although there are plenty of shopping options along the beaches in Sihanoukville, the prices are higher compared to other cities. So avoid shopping if you plan to visit other towns in your itinerary.

Sihanoukville was set up as a port town in 1964 after Cambodia's independence, and the city got its name from the country's King Norodom Sihanouk. Relatively a new town, it developed into a beach destination with grand resorts, bars and rich coastline until the Khmer Rouge put an end to the golden era.

The city was almost shut down after thousands of civilians were killed and the buildings destroyed. One of the famous hotels was Independence hotel, which became abandoned. In 1993, peace returned to Sihanoukville, and from the late 1990s, the town turned into a backpacker's paradise, with plenty of cheap guesthouses, bars, cafes and restaurants lining up the clean white sand beaches.

From being Cambodia's famous beach town, it has now turned into a concrete jungle with construction sites. The city is home to more expats than the locals now, a majority of them Chinese, who have set up hundreds of huge casinos across all the beaches. This sizeable Chinese investment is sadly negatively changing the city, impacting the lives of the locals. The Chinese population has increased here dramatically with its continued settlement.

Sihanoukville City in Cambodia

Sihanoukville City

From low, mid to high ranged, accommodating at beautiful resorts, bungalows, lodges or standard hotels at the mainland is a basic relaxing experience while Koh Rong Samloem Island, Koh Rong Island, Koh Russei, Koh Ta Kiev provide ideals for a better beach experience or even make an exclusive beach holiday at the private island “Koh Song Saa” to capture the true sense of tranquility, nature discovery, swimming and relaxing.

The city orientation, a day trip of city highlights, islands boat discovery and a sunset boat cruise are optional touring activities which also give beyond to see the local culture, encounters and photography opportunity rather than just relaxing at the seaside. On the mainland, Ochheuteal, Otres and Independence beaches provide variety of beach breaks and seaside activities which overlooking the modern buildings and islands or grab an evening sunset boat party while Sokha beach has private beach, seaside and day tour activities for her own in-house customers.

Does Sihanoukville still a place for beach escapes?

The answer is Yes, there are a lot of natural places and beach islands that you may not know for beach break, underwater and natural places to be explored especially the beauty of Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem and Song Saa Islands, and other small beautiful islands. At the time you’re staying on one of those islands, underwater tour activities and kayak boat trips can be arranged by a local travel agency and by your hotel.

How to get to Sihanoukville?

By private taxi, public VIP mini-van and buses approximately take 3 ½ – 4 hours from Phnom Penh Capital via National Road 4 while it takes around 2½ hours via the Expressway (National Road 3) which is still under construction and is estimated to be completed in 2023. The border crossing between Prek Chak International Border and Ha Tien (Vietnam) is also accessible along with 3 hours drive to Sihanoukville.

Domestic flights from Phnom Penh (40 minutes) and Siem Reap (1 hour) to Sihanouville are available daily. There are some direct flights which are seasonally scheduled several times from Kuala Lumpur (1:50), Bangkok (1:10), Chengdu (3:25) and Zhengzhou (4:5) to Sihanoukville every month.

By air conditioning train, sitting back and enjoying the city & countryside views from outside the windows, Royal Railway offers 3 times per week which schedules at 7.00am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and takes about 7 hours along with 2 stops for short break in Takeo and Kampot before reaching Sihanoukville City.

How to get to Sihanoukville’s Islands & Koh Rong?

Public speed ferries and tickets can be booked through local travel agencies when you arrive in the town but to get free hassle, you should make a reservation in advance to avoid full booking which ruins your travel plan. There are a few speed ferry operators run daily speed ferries to those islands with different departure times (45 minutes to 1 hour) in the morning, at noon and in the late afternoon depends on which island you travel to. Be aware that your booked speed ferry ticket is round trip and you have to inform your speed ferry operator one day in advance about which return departure you decided to take. To do this, you can certainly ask for a favor from your hotel’s receptionist. If you’re staying at Russei or Song Saa Private Islands, the hotels will provide their customers a round trip of their own charter speed boat.

When is the best time to visit Sihanoukville?

In tropical monsoon, Sihanoukville and its beautiful islands warmly welcome tourists all year round but the perfect season is from November to February when climate is sunny, warm and cold. The sea level and the beauty of the seaside will vary from March to October, the lack of sea water in the hot season makes beaches a bit dry up overlooking bare trees while the raining season from July to middle October may cause the flood to those islands and frequently re-schedule boat departures if the weather is bad and has big waves but it’s entirely okay for those who stay at the mainland.

Christmas, New Year Eve, Cambodian Water Festival and Songkran New Year are the hassle periods or Peak Season, most of services and accommodations are pre-booked up quickly. This warns you that you have to book most of services at least two month ahead if you plan to spend your summer vacations during those times and you should note that all prices will also increase between 20-30% on top of regular prices of the high season. Unfortunately, train, bus and speed boat tickets are not available for reservation in advance for a longer time.

Climate degree varies from different periods: – Hot Season 27-36°C – March to May – Rainy Season 24-35°C – June to October – Cool Season 20-29°C – November to February

Find out, which Sihanoukville beach is your favourite

There is plenty of choice concerning Sihanoukville beaches!

This guide will help you find the one best for you.

Is Sihanoukville worth the arduous four to five hour trip from Phnom Penh? In my opinion, yes, it is. The Sihanoukville beaches are, in part, unbelievably beautiful. Everything is reasonably priced, since it is a backpackers’ mecca. Nonetheless, other tourists are welcome too, and can feel comfortable here. But if you expect five-star service by the gorgeous beach, I would not recommend this place. The quality of the food and the service in many restaurants leaves room for improvement. To be honest though, I don’t really care about that. To me it is most important that I am in a beautiful place and that is definitely the case. Below I would like to prove that by means of a little beach guide.

Sihanoukville beaches guide

The selection is huge. You are spoilt for choice. I took it upon myself to check out absolutely every single beach on the motorbike so that you won’t have to; since a visit is not worthwhile everywhere! After arriving you should obtain a map of Sihanoukville from your guesthouse or one of the many travel agencies as soon as possible. On it the beaches are marked very clearly. I recommend renting a motorcycle in order to reach the different beaches.

Sokha Beach

Is a relatively small, incredibly beautiful beach. If your accommodation is near Serendipity Beach, you can even walk there in about half an hour. This beach is perfect for those who prefer things to be a little calmer.

Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s bargain beach paradise. But the choice of beaches is huge. This article will help you with the selection.

Independence Beach

This is the perfect beach for hedonists, who prefer to enjoy the day at the beach with a few beers and a massage. An avenue of trees just behind the beach gives plenty of shade and there are few restaurants offering simple Asian and Western meals.

Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s bargain beach paradise. But the choice of beaches is huge. This article will help you with the selection.

Hawaii Beach

You can easily give this beach a miss. It is made up of only a small strip of sand and is not inviting in any other way either. In front of Hawaii Beach there lies Koh Pous Island. At the time of my visit in January 2014, construction work on a bridge, which connects the island to the mainland, was completed, but it was not yet open to traffic.

Victory Beach

This beach is highly frequented, because a few big hotels are just behind it. The strip of sand is relatively narrow and not especially pretty. Right next to Victory Beach is the industrial harbour.

Serendipity Beach

This is the most frequented beach in all of Sihanoukville. Most of the accommodation, at varying price levels, is located here. During the day you can give the beach a miss. At night, the nightlife takes place here until four in the morning. All beach restaurants offer an almost identical selection of seafood barbecue, typically Asian. Behind the beach, on the main street there are restaurants, which are a little more comfortable for sitting down.

Ochheuteal Beach

Forms a single very long beach together with Serendipity Beach. The further you move away from Serendipity Beach the calmer it gets. One section of the beach makes do without any bungalows, restaurants or guesthouses. Right at the end of the beach, near Otres Beach, there is a section of fantastically white beach with one or two bars. This is the part of Sihanoukville I found the most beautiful!

Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s bargain beach paradise. But the choice of beaches is huge. This article will help you with the selection.

Otres Beach

Here is where backpackers find what makes their heart sing. The beach is incredibly beautiful and right at the beach there are a number of cheap bungalow complexes. Further back at the unpaved road there are two- and three-storey wooden houses with the perfect adventure ambiance. The bungalows by the beach don’t have toilets or showers. These are located further away from the beach, where the construction of permanent houses is permitted. To me, Otres Beach was the perfect place for relaxing, for eating and drinking in one of the restaurants and for enjoying the beach. Ideally, you just come here, pick the accommodation you like best and ask for a vacancy. Since Sihanoukville is not so overcrowded this is not normally a problem. You can book your first night’s stay at Hostelworld or booking.com at Serendipity Beach. Most accommodation close to the beach that you can book online is located there.

Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s bargain beach paradise. But the choice of beaches is huge. This article will help you with the selection.

Queen Hill Resort

After one night at Serendipity Beach I rented a motorcycle and set out to find better accommodation. On a hill between Ochheuteal and Otres Beach I succeeded. The bungalows on a hill cost 30 USD per night. The bathrooms and the cleanliness could have been better, but at such a perfect location, I didn’t really care. If you prefer you can book the Queen Hill Resort Bungalows online as well.

Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s bargain beach paradise. But the choice of beaches is huge. This article will help you with the selection.

Islands offshore

Those who enjoy diving or solitude can visit one of the offshore islands. Any one of the countless travel agencies will happily sell you day trips and beyond to the islands.

Sihanoukville nightlife

Is best on Serendipity Beach. There are also a few bars in the Victory Hill district above Victory Beach, but – be warned – those are not normal bars but girlie bars.

Monkey Hill

On the road between Independence and Hawaii Beach there is wild troop of monkeys, which delights in the food given to them by the tourists. Bananas and peanuts are their favourites. They are not supposed to be fed at all, but that is wishful thinking in the face of all the tourists who make a stop here.

Avoid this travel agency like the plague

They call themselves “ Lucky travel and tours, Flight and visa specialists ”, www.lucky-travels.com and their offices are on the main street behind Serendipity Beach. The signage above the entrance is yellow and white on a dark green board. When I tried to return my rental scooter on a weekday at 11.30 the office was still locked up with a chain, even though it was supposed to open at 10.00 at the latest. I wanted my passport back and was going to get picked up afterwards, at 12.00, by a bus company to get back to Phnom Penh. Luckily my call was answered by the boss, who told me he was visiting relatives in Kampot. He couldn’t understand my excitement and said he would send someone over. The person showed up, still sleepy, shortly before 12 and returned my passport to me. Another customer, who wanted to pick up his visa for Vietnam, arrived and only thanks to me he found the travel agent’s office open. Go elsewhere . Such sloppiness should really not be supported!

For your travel planning

There is a variety of offers. I recommend using the Sorya bus line. It runs from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville almost every hour between 7.00 and 17.00. From Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh it runs as well almost every hour between 7.00 and 17.00. Sorya also offers the bus route to and from Siem Reap, but less often. Inquire into the exact travel times a day ahead of travelling. All travel agencies, without exception, try to talk you into travelling in a VIP minivan. But those are just normal minibuses with little legroom. A bus is the better choice.

When is the best travel time?

Sihanoukville sees the best weather from November until February, with pleasant, warm temperatures and almost no rainfall.

Phnom penh to sihanoukville: the 5 best ways to travel.

Come check out the best ways to travel from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville in Cambodia. I will compare the bus, minivan, train, and plane choices to let you know which exactly is the best option!

No doubt if you are traveling in Cambodia then you seriously need to check out the islands. Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem have some of the best beaches I have ever seen.

Think crystal clear waters, squeaky white sand, just absolute perfection. Now I started my Cambodia travels in Phnom Penh so that was my starting point. Luckily it is relatively easy to figure out how to travel from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville.

Though what I struggled with personally was the town of Sihanoukville. Questions like Is Sihanoukville still worth visiting, how safe is it, and can I time any of the transport correctly so I don’t need to spend overnight in Sihanoukville and instead head straight to the islands floated around my mind.

Sihanoukville certainly isn’t this sleepy little town like it used to be. Instead, casinos are popping up around every corner and the whole place seems to be in a state of construction. Though luckily nearby you have the idyllic islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem.

But before we get into traveling from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong , we need to take a step back and figure out how to exactly get from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville. Whether that is by plane, train, bus, or minivan I will explain all the details of each option, allowing you to book confidently.

Phnom Penh To Sihanoukville: The First Step To Traveling To The Islands In Cambodia

Phnom penh to sihanoukville distance, phnom penh to sihanoukville travel time, private transfer from phnom penh to sihanoukville, bus from phnom penh to sihanoukville, minibus from phnom penh to sihanoukville, fly from phnom penh to sihanoukville, train from phnom penh to sihanoukville, faqs about traveling from phnom penh to sihanoukville.

The distance from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville in Cambodia is approximately 227 kilometers. I know this doesn’t sound like a lot, and in all honesty, it is a pretty easy and decent drive. The roads are well paved and you will be traveling on the busy highway the majority of the distance.

Though in saying that sometimes the roads are not the safest. Personally, I haven’t had any accidents, but I have heard plenty of stories from other travelers, and when you are on the roads it is easy to see why.

It is a mixture of buses, huge lorry trucks, and families on motorbikes, and everyone is trying to overtake each other. No doubt you will have one ‘what the fuck’ moment.

You may think the airport is safer and the better option, but this is still questionable. No doubt taking a flight is the most expensive method of traveling from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville. Also, you do have the hassle of waiting around at the airport on either side.

The deciding factor that will sway you on whether to take a bus, private transfer, plane, or train will depend on your budget and how long you have to complete the journey.

construction going on at the outskirts of sihanoukville

Of course, depending on the type of transport you decide to book from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville will affect how long it takes to travel this journey.

Private Transfer: Taking a private transfer will allow you a bit more freedom in terms of stop offs etc, or perhaps you are arriving at the airport and want to head straight to the coast. A private transfer will take you around 4 hours.

Bus: The bus journey from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville will take approximately five and a half hours. This is simply because a bus travels slower than a taxi or minivan.

Train: I love taking trains, but unfortunately in this case taking a train is actually the slowest transport method at 7 hours. This is honestly because the trains here travel super slow. Though depending on what type of carriage you book you may find it a more comfortable journey than other options.

Limo Van: The Limo Van is slightly quicker than taking a bus at just 4 hours. This is generally because you are in a smaller vehicle so it is easier to serve in and out of traffic along the highway.

Flight: The quickest way is no doubt flying as the total journey time from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville is an easy 50 minutes. Though keep in mind you will need to be at the airport at least an hour prior to departure.

Duration: 4 hours

Cost: $70.00 – $120.00 per car

If you aren’t on too much of a budget or perhaps are traveling in a group you can split the total costs with, then taking a private transfer is a good way of traveling from Phnom Penh To Sihanoukville.

This is no doubt the fastest way if you are traveling overland, and the highway creates a smooth and relatively straightforward journey.

The exact amount it will cost will depend on whether you need a standard sedan for up to 4 people or a minivan for large groups. Either way, prices begin at around $70.00 and go up from there.

You will also want to make sure that the car has air conditioning so it can be a relaxing ride. One thing to be aware of is the amount of room in the trunk and whether that will fit 4 individual suitcases, depending on how much you travel with you may find that it is more suitable to hire a larger vehicle.

One of the bonuses for taking a private vehicle from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville is that you will be able to make plenty of stops on the journey. Whether that is somewhere to eat, bathroom breaks, or perhaps a photo spot.

Though to be honest this isn’t the most beautiful road in the country. It will also give you flexibility to depart earlier or later in the day in case you have commitments.

If you are looking at a private transfer I recommend booking in advance online with ; 12.Go Asia.

Duration: 6 and a half hours

Cost: $15.00+ per person

A common way for travelers on a budget to travel from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville is by bus. Though be aware this is one of the longer options taking anywhere from six and a half hours to eight hours depending on traffic, and how many stops the bus makes along the way.

The best operators that offer this route are The Giant Ibis, Sorya, and Virak Buntham Express. Though in my personal opinion, I think The Giant Ibis is the best company to book with.

This is because they commonly cater to tourists so their services are of a high standard. You can expect free pick up, comfortable buses, air conditioning, as well as snacks and water. Just be aware that even though they advertise wifi on board it barely ever works.

If you are looking at not staying the night in Sihanoukville and instead heading straight to the islands, make sure to time your bus journey appropriately.

The majority of buses leave in the morning and you will arrive in the afternoon, the exact time depends on which bus you decide to book. Though the latest bus arrives at 5 pm, whereas the last ferry departs at 3 pm (hopefully with slowly increased tourism post covid, this will change).

Bus Schedule From Phnom Penh To Sihanoukville

Here is the bus schedule departing from Phnom Penh and arriving in Sihanoukville. Of course, there are more companies than just those I have listed. Though this is just a selection of the most popular.

As you can see all companies cost about a similar amount and depart rather regularly. Though personally, I enjoy traveling with Giant Ibis.

They cater to travelers so even though you are paying a bit more you do get to travel in comfort and get assistance with crossing the border . We enjoyed them so much that they were the only company we booked the rest of our Cambodia travels with. Honestly, there are not too many bus companies operating this route. That is because it has become more popular to travel this journey by van, or VIP van if you have a bit more to spend on comfort. Though more on that later down.

How To Book Tickets

Booking your travels and transport in Cambodia is super easy, including traveling from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville. I have actually had great luck booking online with 12.Go Asia .

I have used them throughout all my travels in Southeast Asia and never have had an issue. They also offer some of the best companies to book the route from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville.

Here you can see what other travelers have said about certain routes with particular companies. Then you can just book your ticket through their website and they will email you a copy. It’s super easy!

The other option is to head to a nearby travel agency or through your hotel once you are in Phnom Penh. Though they will just book you on whatever is available and what they make a decent commission on.

So not necessarily always the best or most comfortable journey. I did this and our van nearly broke down halfway and the air con stopped working.

Where Does The Bus Drop You Off

Depending on the bus company you decide to book with it is likely they will drop you off somewhere different, such as their office, rather than at the bus station. Though luckily Sihanoukville is a super small place and it won’t take long to make your way to the ferry terminal, assuming you don’t actually want to stay there.

No doubt the most popular way of traveling from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville is actually by minivan. You will have two different types to choose from, either your standard van or a VIP van.

I traveled in a standard van, though if I were to make this same journey again I would for sure book in a VIP Van. I know the journey isn’t too long, but it only costs a little bit more for super comfy seats and plenty of legroom.

a comfortable van is the most popular option to travel from phnom penh to sihanoukville

If you don’t have too long for your Cambodia travels then you may find yourself looking into taking a flight from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville. There are a few airlines that service this route including Cambodia Angkor Air, JC Airlines, and Lanmei Airlines.

They all offer direct flights and if you book far enough in advance you may find this quite an affordable option. Just be aware that not all airlines operate every day so you may have to look at a couple before deciding on your final choice.

Even though it may be a relatively short flight from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville at just a 50-minute journey, you do need to factor in the travel time to and from the airport.

If you are staying in Downtown Phnom Penh you will find the International Airport approximately 12 kilometers away. Even though this may not sound like long, there can be quite a lot of traffic on the roads.

I traveled to Phnom Penh Airport during Songkran when the city was nearly abandoned and it still took us a decent 15 to 20 minutes. You can book a taxi on the Grab mobile app where you can find out the price in advance to avoid the hassle of haggling.

Once at Sihanoukville International Airport, there are unfortunately not too many options for traveling into the city or to the ferry terminal which is approximately 20 kilometers away.

The most popular, and one of the only methods is to take a taxi which should cost between $20.00 and $30.00. Though be aware the roads are under constant construction in the city and the straightforward 30-minute ride can quickly, double, or triple in length as you get stuck in traffic.

Therefore even though the flight itself is the quickest option to travel from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville, it isn’t necessarily the fastest overall when you factor in travel times to and from the airport.

If I am to be frank, taking the train isn’t the most efficient method of transportation from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville, nor basically anywhere in Cambodia .

The train is notorious for being slow, poorly maintained, and lacking in stops at main destinations (though a company that has the current contract is slowly improving this).

Though I do love taking trains, and I know I am not the only one in the world who thinks this. Oftentimes it is all about the journey and a local method of transportation like this is a great way to see the country and experience the landscapes.

The train only operates limited days per week which are usually Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays departing from the Royal Railway Station in Phnom Penh at 07:00 am.

A plus is that tickets are pretty damn cheap starting at just $8.00, though be aware the total journey takes a minimum of 8 hours, which is basically your entire day gone.

How many days to spend in Sihanoukville? If I haven’t already answered this I recommend as little time as possible in Sihanoukville. Instead, you will want to travel straight through to the islands when you arrive.

Just be aware that depending on when your transport arrives, this may not be possible as the ferries stop running mid-afternoon. Therefore you may find yourself staying overnight in the city and then catching an early boat out.

How far in advance do I need to book tickets? It is recommended you book tickets in advance to ensure you can travel with a reputable, clean, and safe company. You should try for at least a week in advance to be safe. Though if you are not worried about this then you can probably just book the day before.

Booking through 12.Go Asia is perfect for those busy periods as you can book when you haven’t even arrived in the country yet! This means you can relax knowing all the planning is taken care of.

Where To Stay In Sihanoukville

Honestly, Sihanoukville used to be the perfect backpacker hangout. Though these days it is filled with casinos, construction, and resorts targeted at Chinese tourists. There is not too much left here so I will split this where to stay section into separate areas of the mainland and nearby islands.

Mainland: The only place I recommend in Sihanoukville is in Otres Beach called Sok Sabay Resort. It is like being transported to a whole other world as soon as you walk in, and trust me that is what you will want.

They have wonderfully air-conditioned rooms, awesome internet, a delicious onsite restaurant offering vege and vegan options, and a clean pool in a tropical garden. Alternatively, you can always just head straight to one of the islands.

Koh Ta Kiev: If you are looking for something off the beaten track with minimal other travelers then check out Koh Ta Kiev. This island is equally as stunning as the others, though a lot less built up.

One of the top places to stay here is called Kactus where you can find basic bamboo huts and dorm rooms. You won’t be able to find any super glamorous accommodation here. This spot is like the rest of the islands 20 years ago, with just what you need and nothing more.

Koh Rong: This is certainly the most built-up island where you can find an assortment of restaurants, cafes, and types of accommodations as well as some incredible beaches . Whether you are wanting an all-inclusive 5-star resort or a cheap dorm room, you can easily find it here.

I don’t recommend staying in the main town where you arrive straight off the ferry, but instead, somewhere a 10 or 15-minute walk away. This will still allow you to access all the amenities but also have some privacy and a quiet beach to relax on.

For something, more lux check out Long Set Resort , for mid-range prices you have Tree House Bungalows , and for dorms, Nest Beach Club (though it is a party hostel).

Koh Rong Samleom : Koh Rong’s slightly lesser ventured sister is Koh Rong Samleom. I loved staying at Sara Resort in the main beach area. The rooms have amazing air conditioning, an awesome location and the onsite restaurant is delicious.

For something, a bit off the beaten track definitely check out Sleeping Trees for their glamping tents. This is on the other side of the island looking straight out to sea, so awesome sunsets. It does like that paradise white sand beach, but the snorkeling here is next level!

Things To Do In Sihanoukville

Can I say leave? I know that may sound bad, but honestly, Sihanoukville is not what it used to be like. Instead, I recommend using this as a stepping stone to and from the islands.

You may find yourself having to stay here a night before or after in order to catch your transport to or from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh. Though if this is the case I recommend booking yourself somewhere nice where you can relax in a comfortable air-conditioned room. You really won’t want to be exploring.
