  • Trivia The film holds the distinction of being one of the few slasher films in horror film history to receive a PG rating, as the PG-13 rating wouldn't exist for five more years.
  • Goofs In the scene where Mr. Slausen leaves Molly with the rifle in the truck, you can see a short male mannequin standing behind her in a sort of saloon setting. Thereafter any time you see her from the same shot, he's no longer there.

George Piper (Daniel Stern) decides his non-communicative family needs a way to bond. In an inspirational moment while filling his gas tank, George is convinced he should lease a huge motor home and take his family on a three-week vacation. But his two children, and wife Bess (Julie Hagerty) are anything but excited—especially when Dad reveals his plans to trace the travels of his Civil War hero ancestor Jeremiah Piper.

Originally made for television, this video had an idea that could have been funny, but became merely ridiculous instead. Despite doing everything possible to destroy their family relationships, the Pipers come together for an amazing happy ending. (Now that’s Disney magic.) Maybe it was better with the commercials…

Flexes that late 70’s slasher formula that in a few short years would be perfected for mass consumption via numerous genre icons and directors, Tourist Trap is a strange little picture filled with tons of idiosyncrasies that make it such a special gem in my eyes, plus it also serves as time stamp of grim fandango 70’s horror movies that shaped the genre for every decade since.

First off, the Texas Chain Saw Massacre rip-off is one of my favorite subgebres and while there’s a bit of that here (some might say every movie rips off TCM and my love for that monolith would find it hard for me to disagree with that statement) there’s even more in the production…

Thankfully, they have added all of the movies with the JBB commentary to the service so we can all enjoy them at any time and that is why they are my favorite streaming service. Also they are a horror service so that’s got a lot to do with me thing they’re the best and I’m sure nobody is surprised there.

This movie is so damn weird and surreal so of course I love it. After watching a million times, the overall impact lessens a bit, but damn there are…

Tourist Trap is a great example of an innocent late 70s slasher that's not pretending to be something it's not. While not technically perfect, it is terrific fun with some freakishly fatal moments.

"You're so pretty. It's a shame you have to die."

Weird, surreal, slightly bonkers and heaps of fun, the film is brought alive by Chuck Connors who puts in a fantastic performance as local fearmonger Mr. Slausen.

I’m going on record saying this is the creepiest movie ever made that was rated ‘PG.’

Essentially a mashup of ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and Herbie Hancock’s ‘Rockit’ music video.

If you’re a horror fan and you’ve never seen ‘Tourist Trap,’ you need to rectify that shit immediately!

This may lack the filthy, visceral power of something like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre , but this off-road wax museum mood-piece is quite creepy and unsettling. All of the doll/mask imagery and sound work pushes the PG rating to its limits, and Chuck Conners' performance as Mr. Slausen is fucking great.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

20something teenagers do battle with a telekinetic hick in the Hollywood Hills, having ill-advisedly rocked up at a forgotten tourist spot, Slausen's Lost Oasis. This was a lot weirder than I was expecting. It feels like it should be campier but there's a actually a real mean streak running through it. Mannequins are creepy af at the best of times, let alone when they're shrouded in deep shadow and have a tendency to become animated when you least expect it.

Obvious reference points are Carrie - with the stalker's psychic powers - and Texas Chainsaw Massacre , both for the backwoods setting and the masked antagonist's hulking appearance. The root of all evil though, is Hitchcock, and Psycho in particular. The…

Mannequins terrorize teenagers at a run-down resort. Chuck Connors, Jocelyn Jones. Jerry: Jon Van Ness. Eileen: Robin Sherwood. Becky: Tanya Roberts. David Schmoeller directed.

This bizarre, eerie shocker, THE TOURIST TRAP stars Chuck Connors as Slausen, a hobbled southerner who operates a roadside tourist attraction called "Slausen's Lost Oasis"--a strange museum that houses a collection of lifelike mannequins. Why anyone would want to visit such a place is anyone's guess, but some dumb college kids roll on in. The Pino Donaggio music kicks in, the dummies come to life, and the visitors are violently dispatched. As senseless as the story is the film contains several memorably creepy scenes, as is to be expected from any film in which mannequins spring to life. Tanya Roberts, soon to be one of "Charlie's Angels," makes a brief appearance here, the back of her head serving as a target for a knife-throwing dummy. Director David Schmoeller would later direct Klaus Kinski in CRAWLSPACE.

‘Tourist Trap’ (1979): A Quirky Cult Classic With A Telekinetic Twist

wadewainio March 31, 2024 News , Retro Reviews , Reviews Comments Off on ‘Tourist Trap’ (1979): A Quirky Cult Classic With A Telekinetic Twist

Tourist Trap   is a 1979 American horror film directed by David Schmoeller and starring Chuck Connors, Jocelyn Jones, Jon Van Ness, Robin Sherwood, and Tanya Roberts. It is an unnaturally entertaining flick, even if not absolutely perfect. Check out the trailer:

The film follows a group of friends who become stranded at a roadside museum run by a seemingly friendly proprietor (Connors), only to discover that there are sinister forces at work. The story revolves around that group of young adults who experience car trouble (imagine that in a horror movie!) and seek help at a nearby tourist attraction called Slausen’s Lost Oasis.

Again, lots of you horror fans will be like, “Uh, ok, been there, done that.” It sounds like just another horror movie, right? However, these young adults (and let’s face it: the ladies are hot and exploited as such) soon find themselves being hunted by a mysterious figure who uses telekinetic powers to control mannequins and other objects. That is the Tourist Trap  difference.

Themes of Tourist Trap

tourist trap 1979 parents guide

Any horror film worth anything has at least one thing that sets it apart. Hitchcock’s The Birds has birds. Slugs (1988) has slugs. That might sound jokingly dismissive, but it’s oddly kind of not. If you’re reading a book and you’re halfway through and still ask, “What is this book about?”, the problem might not just be you, dear reader. It is possibly not the greatest piece of art ever conceived.

On that note, Tourist Trap at least offers a few things, such as the uncanny, and a freaky Chuck Connors with telekinetic powers. Sure, it abides by plenty of “genre conventions,” but it also has Chuck Connors manipulating objects with his goddamn mind. That’s got to be worth something, right? Damn right!

The eerie atmosphere of the roadside museum and the surreal nature of the antagonist’s abilities contribute to the film’s sense of unease. It’s successful enough that Tourist Trap has had some influences on horror over the years. Granted, I couldn’t offhand pinpoint what all those influences are, but it sounded right to type those words down, so I did. I also know I am probably right, as Tourist Trap  is getting the remake treatment (for better or worse).

Why Did Tourist Trap  Get Made Anyway?

The film draws inspiration from classic horror tropes, including elements of slasher films and supernatural horror. That being said, I hesitate to say it feels like a “slasher” film per se. It is one of those types of movies – technically – but feels a little different due to its manic, almost playful energy. That’s because it also incorporates elements of psychological horror, particularly in its portrayal of the protagonist’s descent into madness (common to “J-Horror” flicks).

My favorite thing about the movie is that it made me wonder what I’d do if I had such powers. It’s much like The Invisible Man  series in that regard. Would I use Invisible Man powers for good, or would I let pervy impulses guide me? Tourist Trap has me wondering how I’d cope with the powers that Connors’ character has.

And here’s the beautiful thing about it: Chuck Connors actually doesn’t come off as cooler than me, or anyone else, in this flick. In fact, he’s a downright weirdo by pretty much anyone’s standards, and he seems really mixed up about what he’s doing. I like that. Granted, I could be misremembering parts of his performance and his character, but it sounded right to type those words down, so I did. I also know I am probably right.

Other Thoughts About This Film

Partly because of Carrie White having telekinetic powers, this movie has some of the feel of “vintage King.” You know, some of the good stuff. I like its atmosphere, suspenseful moments, and innovative use of practical effects, particularly in its portrayal of the antagonist’s abilities. It’s a movie that earned a legacy. Despite its relatively low profile at the time of its release, Tourist Trap  has become a cult classic in the horror genre.

Sort of like John Carpenter‘s Christine , it just has some quirky elements that make it memorable. I’m sure it has influenced later films and has been cited as an inspiration by filmmakers and horror enthusiasts alike. This flick is deservedly remembered as a unique and unsettling entry in the horror genre, featuring memorable performances and a chilling atmosphere that continues to captivate audiences to this day.

Plus, that mask is frickin’ creepy, and it reminds me of that creepy mask worn by BTK. So just imagine that freaky nutcase with telekinetic powers, then try to tell me there’s no horror potential to that premise.

Tourist Trap (1979) Review

By Christian Sellers • July 18, 2009

tourist-trap

Ten years before collaborating on the successful cult classic Puppet Master , director David Schmoeller and producer Charles Band created Tourist Trap , a bizarre lost-in-the-wilderness thriller that sees a group of young friends falling foul of a devilish museum of mannequins.   Starring screen legend Chuck Connors and Charlie’s Angels beauty Tanya Roberts, the movie failed to make much of an impact upon its initial release but has since gained a reputation as a lost oddity. Full of bizarre imagery and a genuinely creepy villain, Tourist Trap is one of the most impressive and overlooked post- Texas Chainsaw Massacre rural slashers, inspired by an earlier Schmoeller short The Spider Will Kill You . Although Band would go onto greater acclaim through his work with Empire and Full Moon , his seventies output (which included Mansion of the Doomed ) would remain his most effective.

tourist-trap-5

He soon realizes there is no escape when suddenly a dummy’s head crashes through the window. Opening a door, a hairless mannequin bursts out and shakes back-to-front on a spring as the three figures begin to laugh frantically at him. He tries to break out through the door but as he reaches his arm through the hole something grabs his hand, keeping him from running as objects begin to randomly fly towards him, metal pipe eventually finding its way into his back. As they search for their friend, the group stumble upon a sign for Slausen’s Lost Oasis and find Woody’s tyre discarded by the side of the road. Soon enough, the jeep breaks down, forcing Jerry to try to fix it as the girls take a dip in the water. But whilst her friends strip off and take a swim, Molly seems reluctant at first but finally relents. Mr. Slausen (Connors), the elderly owner of the property, appears at the shore with a shotgun, immediately claiming how he used to charge visitors to swim but the tourist trade has since dried up.

tourist-trap-6

Tourist Trap ’s weakest asset is the acting, with the attractive cast lacking any distinctive characteristics or screen charisma. Jones, in particular, makes for a feeble final girl, almost sleepwalking through her role, although the sexual appeal of Roberts helps keep Becky interesting. Connors is suitably creepy in his role as the old man who may not be what he seems, but the remaining performers are generic and lack sympathy. The script borrows heavily from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (a group of kids find an old gas station, they trespass where they are not welcome and are eventually dispatched by a bulking-yet-effeminate killer) but has enough originality and suspense to provide enough genuinely unsettling moments. The concept of city slickers wandering too far into the wilderness and angering the locals has been re-used countless times since Deliverance but it is such an interesting premise Schmoeller (and co-writer J. Larry Carroll) manage to craft an interesting tale.

Good review, mate!! Tourist Trap is one of my faves, and it is definitely underrated. I think that is part to it being relatively bloodless, but it makes up in atmosphere by the bucketload.

' src=

Agreed! Very atmospheric and at times suspenseful which is why I wear my Tourist Trap shirt with pride..heheh

' src=

There are some aspects of this that I really like – the telekinetic abilities of the killer create some genuine suspense when he bolts shut doors and animates the lifeless mannequins. Also the cast and the basic premises of the plot are appealing.

However, the movie could have benefitted from tighter editing and camera work. And chatty killers are risky at best – here, it’s a double edged sword, because his voice would have been rather creepy, if he didn’t keep yacking on like that.

' src=

I to love “Tourist Trap” for what’s already been mentioned. The “Texas Chainsaw..” attitude, the desolation factor, love the creepy atmosphere, the telekinesis is on the “What he Hell?” side but actually makes all the more freaky and the mannequins? Well they are even more creepy than “Maniac”. Like when there jaws drop open and go AAAAAH AAAAH AAAAh. Great film that’s not the norm.

' src=

This is a HORROR CLASSIC! I’ve always loved this movie since I was really little and if you look for Shaye St. John on YouTube, they seem to have drawn a lot of insipiration from the mannequins…LOL!!

' src=

TOURIST TRAP IS GREAT AND DAVID AYRES DID A GREAT JOB WITH THE MAKE-UP FX THIS IS A VERY CREEPY MOVIE THAT DIDNT NEED BLOOD, EVEN THE GAY CHUCK CONNERS PULLED OFF A GREAT JOB AS THE LEAD.

oops sorry bout the caps i sometimes forget forums hate caps

” Tourist Trap” is another horor gem from the 70′s. When I was a kid the vhs box cover was enough to get me NOT to rent it! Ha..ha. Years later I did watch it and loved it. Found it used on a speacial edition DVD not too long ago. It’s still a great film. The opening alone is goosebump material. Chuck conners was wonderful. I like how he brought that “old school” feel to the film…..good stuff! If you havent seen this film or havent seen it in awhile I recommend you check it out! Did i mention the absolutly gorgeous tanya roberts (That 70′s show)? She was def the “megan fox” of the late 70′s early 80′s. She’s more than just eye candy here and does a pretty good job.

' src=

Though this film doesn’t come close to being as “memorable” as most of its counterparts, it still holds the distinction – for me – as the horror film with the creepiest opening sequence in horror history!

' src=

Maybe I wasn’t in the mood but I found it boring. Good masks but that’s all. Terrible acting by the girls…so disappointing!

' src=

My first glimpse of Tourist Trap was on USA’s “Saturday Nightmares”. Never looked at mannequins the same ever since.

' src=

I watch this at least twice a year. One of my top 100 favorite films. His mask is just creepy. In one scene though, you can actually see director David Schmoeller’s reflection in glass, but I can’t say because it’s one of the death scenes.
