The Paris Metro is a good option to move from one point to another, it has 16 lines and 302 stations throughout the city.

The metro lines in Paris are differentiated by colors and are numbered. This   it is the third longest tube network in Europe, after the London Underground and the Madrid Underground .

Paris Metro tickets and passes

The price of the tickets varies according to the type of pass, they can be for a single trip (€2.10 ) daily, weekly or monthly ; several trips are usually purchased at the same time (card), with which we will save money; In addition, with the metro tickets you can also use the RER (suburban train) and the bus .

Paris metro information

The first metro leaves the terminus at 5.30am. The last metro arrives at the terminal station at 1.15am, except on Fridays, Saturdays and on nights before a holiday, when the service ends at 2.15am. Time between trains range from 2 minutes during rush hour up to 13 minutes during late night hours, holidays, and Sundays, depending on the line and station.

Entrance is by automated gate, opened by tickets, Navigo travel passes or Paris Visite travel pass . Gates return metro tickets for passengers to keep.

Metro tickets are sold at automated machines in metro stations. They are gradually being phased out and replaced by Navigo travel passes. The new Navigo Easy is practical for occasional travelers and tourists and a good alternative to the metro tickets.

The pass can be bought in metro stations. It should then be loaded with transport tickets. The pass is not nominative. It can be loaned or transferred. During a trip, each traveler must carry and have validated his own pass.

Paris metro tickets

T+ tickets cost 1.90 euro. Valid for a multi transfer journey within 1h30 from first use, they can be used on the metro, buses, trams, RER in zone 1 and 2 with transfers on the same mode of transport and between metro and RER. Special tickets have to be bought for zone 3 to 5.

When transferring between the metro and the RER, it is necessary to retain the ticket. The RER requires a valid metro ticket for entry and exit.

The Paris Visite travel pass provides access to public transport services. It is valid for 1, 2, 3 or 5 consecutive days in metro zones 1 to 3 or 1 to 5. The validity period starts at midnight on the first day and ends at midnight on the last day.

The Paris Visite travel pass provides unlimited free rides on the transport system of the Paris region including the metro, bus, trains and Montmartre funicular.

Fulgence Bienvenue, a French engineer, accepted the network project in July 1897, and work began in October 1898. The first line (Porte de Vincennes - Porte Maillot) was opened to the public on 19 July 1900 in order to serve the events of the 1900 summer Olympic Games at the Bois de Vincennes . The putting in place of the metro was agreed upon by the state and the city of Paris to remedy the problem of increasingly insufficient surface transport. They were thinking ahead, in particular, to the upcoming World Fair of 1900. The original project comprised a circular line running Etoile-Nation-Étoile and two transversal lines, one running north-south (Porte de Clignancourt-Porte d'Orléans) and the other east-west (Avenue Gambetta - Porte Maillot). Two management companies then came into being: CMP (Compagnie du métro parisien) and the Nord-Sud company, each using different decorations for their stations.

By 1913, the metro network had already grown to comprise ten lines: 8 were the property of CMP. The remaining two belonged to Nord-Sud (the current lines 12 and 13). From 55 million in 1901, the number of passengers had increased to 467 million by 1913. The network continued to grow during the First World War. Between the two wars, lines 9, 10 and 11 were opened and the two management companies merged into one.

It was all the way to 15th October 1998 before another new line was opened: the 14, initially running from Madeleine and to the National Library, then extended to cover gare Saint-Lazare, then Mairie de Saint-Ouen is the backbone of the ambitious Grand Paris metro project. On June 24 2024, just in time for the Olympics, line 14 was extended to Saint-Denis Pleyel to the north and Orly Airport to the south. The fully automated line 14 is now 27 kilometer long and the backbone of the Grand Paris metro network.

The Big Bus / Cars Rouges is a second hop on hop off bus company with open roofs to discover the city of Paris via a tour. Big Bus offers 2 lines, a tourist bus line and a river cruise line on the Seine. Tours are commented in 9 languages.

The Big Bus Tours of Paris (called the red buses) are buses with an open roof allowing you to admire the monuments throughout the route. The Parisian Big Bus Tours offer a Hop On Hop Off sightseeing bus service. Free Wifi, air conditioning, ponchos in case of rain bring comfort to the visit. The Big Buses stop at the company's bus stops every 10 minutes or so. The audio guides provided have commentaries in several languages (up to 14 different ones). In the minibuses, the drivers are multilingual.

Big Bus Paris offers 2 routes: 

• The Big Bus Rouge line has a fairly classic route: Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Elysées, Eiffel Tower... First departure from the Eiffel Tower at 9:30 am, last departure shortly before 5:41 pm. Frequency: every 5 to 15 minutes. Duration of the complete tour: 2 hours and 20 minutes.
• The blue Big Bus line gives access to the Circuit Montmartre. You can take the bus at the Louvre-Pyramide stop or at Gare du Nord. Please note that there is no real stop on this route. At Louvre-Pyramide, first departure at 10 am, last departure at 5:30 pm. Frequency: every 30 minutes. Duration of the complete circuit: 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The Batobus of Paris is a regular river hop on hop off shuttle service transporting passengers on the Seine to visit Paris.

The Batobus takes you all along the Seine in the heart of Paris to reach different areas of the capital. Batobus allows you to visit the capital by looking at the monuments along the Seine and giving you the freedom to go up or down as you wish. Batobus is also a practical, river-based Parisian means of transport, accessible to bicycles.

It is made up of a fleet of 6 panoramic trimaran boats and has 9 stations. Its Pass is valid for 24 hours. With its panoramic view, its terrace, its heating and air conditioning, the Batobus offers a pleasant cruise and a practical means of transport.

• First departure from the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame station at 10am.
• Last departure from the Eiffel Tower station at 5pm from Monday to Thursday and at 7pm from Friday to Sunday.
• Last departure from Beaugrenelle station at 6:50 pm from Monday to Thursday and at 8:45 pm from Friday to Sunday.

Stations and itinerary: Eiffel Tower, Invalides / Pont Alexandre III, Musée d'Orsay, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Notre-Dame, Jardin des Plantes / Cité de la Mode et du Design, Hôtel de Ville, Louvre, Champs-Élysées, Beaugrenelle. The whole loop takes about 2 hours, and the navigation time between each station takes about 8 to 12 minutes depending on the route.

If you're going to travel underground you need a map. While there are good Metro maps mounted on the walls of all the Paris Metro stations, you're going to need your own map to help you plot your route before you jump on a train. But, these days, you probably already have a darn good Metro map in your pocket.

Until now, we've also recommended Paris guide books that feature good Metro maps, but with one exception we've dropped that practice since most of us have Google or Apple map apps on our phones. Both of those services are able to plot routes and directions using the Paris Metro. But the best Metro map and service is the smart phone app created by RATP, the operator of the Paris Metro.

Bonjour – paris metro, bus & rer.

This is now the best way to carry around a map of Paris and its Metro system. This handy, free smart phone app, created by RATP, the operator of the Paris Metro, has everything you need to navigate the Metro and buses of Paris.

The app has good maps of the Metro and of the city itself. When you have a data connection you can look up the best route from address to address and it will return the fastest way — by foot, Metro, bus, even by car and bike. There is information on tickets, night bus service, train stations and airports.

Here's another great feature — even if you've turned off your cellular data roaming (and who wants to pay those high data-roaming charges?) the included map of Paris still shows your exact location and you can use it to navigate the streets of the city. We're not savvy enough to know why that feature is still available when data roaming is turned off, but we use it all the time. Download it the usual way, from your Apple or Google sources.

Michelin 62: paris par arrondissement.

Michelin is the premier name in Paris maps. This is an easy-to-carry map of Paris, arranged by the areas of Paris. Each double-page map includes an inset map showing all the arrondissements as well as the specific area that page covers. There are 144 pages of maps, index, and appendices. Except for the legend pages, the book is in French, although that's not a real problem for a map book!

The Metro map is very good. It covers a two-page spread right at the back of the book, so it's very easy to find. This Metro map Paris shows all the lines of the Metro, the RER and the tramway. We like the fact that the Metro lines are presented on a map of Paris, so you have a real idea of where each line runs. We like this "human" approach much better than the "graphic" versions where design overrules usefulness.

Also included are smaller-scale RER and rail maps, bus maps and bus info, and airport information.

Online interactive metro map paris.

RATP, the operator of the Metro, RER and bus lines in Paris, has a very useful tool on their website. It's an interactive route-plotting tool that lets you put in your point of origin and your destination, and then returns the best route for you. You can choose to travel by rail or by bus, you can choose to find the quickest route or the route with the fewest changes.

Instead of just accepting Metro stations, the interactive Metro map Paris tool lets you input your apartment or hotel address as well as the exact address you are going to.

We found an easier way to get around Paris. Download this Paris Metro map pdf and you’ll always know where you are in the City of Light. This official city map is difficult to find (we’re not sure why), so we’ve made it available for you below.

Paris’ public transportation takes visitors just about anywhere. The traditional Paris Metro map shows the train routes as a series of colored lines. That gives a you general idea where the lines are located in the city, and how they relate to each other. But it doesn’t show you, the visitor, exactly where you are compared to the actual streets above ground.

PRO TIP: While traveling, it’s best to follow these tips for what to wear in Europe to not look like a tourist.

But we’ve found a better Paris Metro map: the grand plan lignes avec rues (lines with streets). It has three unique features that make it especially useful for visitors:

• The map displays the metro lines with all their twists and turns
• It overlays the lines on the actual city streets
• The map includes icons of major tourist sights

YES! Finally you can look at a map, figure out exactly where you are and where you want to go, then make an informed decision about how to get there. Additionally, when you arrive at your destination stop, you’ll be able to determine exactly where you are in the city.

For me, one of the most frustrating things about taking a subway/metro is walking through the various underground passageways that twist this way and that. The typical metro map only displays how the train lines relate to one another, not to the city itself. By the time you pop up above ground, you are completely disoriented as to where you are.

With the map avec rues , you can figure out your location pretty quickly. Once you get above ground, a quick look at a few street signs will tell you where you are in no time. You can also make more informed decisions about where you’re going, and the best route to get there.

For example, take a look at the screen shot excerpts from the two different types of maps below. The traditional “cartoon,” or stylized map is on the left, the map avec rues is on the right. They both show the Eiffel Tower and Les Invalides.

Assuming you want to visit both Left Bank attractions, you use a map to plan your day. Using the “cartoon” map at left, it appears that the first stop might be “Champ de Mars Tour Eiffel” to visit the Eiffel Tower. Then, after doing a quick Google search for the best metro stop for Les Invalides, you’d get three possible options: “La Tour Maubourg,” “Ecole Militaire,” or “Varenne.” Back onto the Metro you go, change trains, and pop up near Les Invalides.

Now, plan out the same excursion using the  map avec rues  (above right).With the metro lines overlaying the actual city streets, it’s easy to see that Les Invalides is fairly close to the Eiffel Tower. You probably won’t need to jump back on the Metro at all! Additionally, you can see that you have several options for which line to take to the Eiffel Tower at the outset. And take a look at the “Ecole Militaire” stop. It’s right between both sights, AND it drops you off in front of the large park where most people take those sweeping views of the Eiffel Tower—Score!

The Paris Metro grand plan lignes avec rues is published by RATP, Paris’ public transit system. The Paris Metro map pdf is available on the RATP website , but it’s a little difficult to find. That’s why we’ve made it handy for you to download here:

The map is easy to use on a phone or tablet.

Hard copies of the Paris Metro grand plan lignes avec rues are technically available at city ticket offices. According to Paris info.com (the official Paris tourism) website,

“There are detailed street maps, plans of the “arrondissement” or maps showing the public transport network. You can obtain free maps from the ticket offices in metro stations, in the department stores and at all the information centres of the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau (the latter is available in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese and Russian!).”

However, paper copies of just about everything are getting more difficult to find these days. We suspect (but we don’t know for certain) that this map may no longer be in print. Once existing stock is depleted, it may not be replenished. Therefore, if you are an “old school,” hard copy kind of person, it’s probably not a good idea to count on picking up a copy once you’ve arrived in Paris. We recommend downloading the PDF file and printing it out before you leave home. (If you’re able to find a hard copy once you’re there, consider it a bonus! 😊)

Certainly there are Paris Metro route finder apps that can be downloaded to smart phones or tablets. But based on our experience, this is one case where “a map is better than an app.” The map shows the big picture, giving you options to determine which routes are best for you. Apps, in our experience, don’t always give the best recommendations. (Plus the map is free, and doesn’t take up much memory in your phone or tablet, so what have you got to lose?!)

Armed with this user-friendly map, anyone can soon be navigating around Paris like a native. This map helped us find these  less crowded sights in Paris , as well as Pere Lachaise Cemetery . And while we were riding the Metro, we enjoyed some of these entertaining Street Musicians of Paris.

The Modern Way To Travel with the Paris Métro & RATP

The way to use the Paris metro and transportation system is changing. Passes, phones, watches… and the Paris Olympic Games.

Even though subways in many places in the world have had things such as rechargeable cards and smartphone-as-ticket options for many years, the whole Paris métro and transportation system has been VERY behind the times with all these new “technologies”.

Until recently, most tourists have had to wait in line at a vending machine to get their little cardboard métro ticket that, yes, were ‘oh so Parisian’ but were a pain when they stopped working because they were demagnetized or when you did not really know whether a ticket was used or not.

Sadly, as of September 2023, all cardboard tickets were removed from sale (you can still use them if you found some in one of your old travel bags).

The “Navigo Easy” Pass

A few years ago, the RATP started to replace the traditional cardboard tickets with a rechargeable, credit-card size pass : the Navigo Easy Pass (we say “Navigo” or “Pass Navigo” for short).

This white and blue card holds your digital tickets, and you just need to put it down on the designed reader area at the gate or bus to validate a ticket.

Few things to keep in mind:

• the pass is anonymous, so if you lose the card or if it’s destroyed, you will lose ALL the tickets on it – there is no way to ‘claim them back’
• you are required to have one Navigo per person travelling – so even if you have 10 tickets on one pass, you and your significant other cannot use the same card at the same time (and even if the automatic gate will allow you to do it, if you get controlled, you will have to pay the same fine as if travelling without a valid ticket)

It is fully transferable because it is anonymous. So, as long as you don’t travel with them, you can give your pass to someone for the day or longer.

The Navigo Easy Card is €2 to purchase (empty) and then you can recharge it from all the RATP machines at the métro/train station , some stores and – welcome to the 21st century! – directly from your phone.

The “Bonjour RATP” app

As someone involved in the mobile app and website design world for decades, I can say that the French are traditionally not known for their easy-to-use websites or apps. I have to admit however that the “Bonjour RATP” app is pretty slick (available for Android and iOS ).

The only thing where they absolutely failed at is in naming the app. It took me several trips to finally remember the name of the app “Bonjour RATP”. If the app is installed on your phone, and you search for “bus”, “metro” or “Paris”, the app will not show up! Yes, every tourist in the world is supposed to know what “RATP” stands for. Please do better, Paris…

From the app, you can do many things:

• plan your trips (including live traffic updates and, for the Paris Olympics, a special mode that will show you all the restricted zones on the map)
• See all the schedules for all 5 Paris zones (métro, bus, tram, RER…)
• Geolocate and rent all the different on-demand bike rentals (like Vélib’, Dott, Lime…)
• Book Marcel VTCs (Uber-style taxis )
• Set up alerts for any traffic issues that might arise on your favorite métro/bus lines
• and most importantly, buy tickets virtually!

Rechargeable pass, phone or watch – The 21st century way to use the Paris Métro, bus, RER…

Android users have been able to use their phones as virtual tickets for a few years now, but only last month did the RATP start supporting the iPhone and Apple Watch (thank you, Olympic Games!)

In the tickets section of the Bonjour RATP App you will see 3 separate sections: Phone, Watch, Navigo Pass (I believe Android does not have a watch option yet).

Keep in mind that because the pass is anonymous, you’ll have to purchase tickets for each device/card specifically. You cannot transfer tickets that are on your Phone to your Pass and vice versa. I’ve seen somewhere that they will offer this option at some point, but for the moment, each device/card is essentially a separate entity.

Buying Phone/Watch Paris metro tickets

Pretty straightforward. The app is already associated with your phone (and your watch associated to your phone) so you just need to go to the Phone or Watch tab and tap on “Buy a ticket”.

At the time of this article, this is what you can buy:

• “Occasional” trip tickets: OrlyBus (€10,30) and RoissyBus (€14,50)
• Navigo regular passes: Monthly (€86,40), Weekly (€30,75), 1 Day (starting at €8,65 based on the zones covered) or Under 26 years-old Week-end Pass ( regular day and weekly passes will not available for purchase between July 20 and Sept 8 )
• Paris 2024 Olympic Games passes ( only valid from July 20 to Sept 8 )

Note that as of July 10, you cannot buy individual t+ tickets for Phone or Watch ( because of the Olympic Games, they recently disabled that )

Buying Navigo Pass Paris metro tickets

If you select the Navigo Pass tab in the app, you will be asked to place the card near your phone (follow the diagram in the instructions) and the app will ‘read’ the content of the pass. You will see how many and what type of tickets are on the pass and you’ll also be able to purchase more.

Once you purchase (via credit card or Apple Pay/Google Pay), you will be asked to do the same and place the card near your phone so that the tickets can be loaded on the card.

It’s pretty slick and works very well in my experience. Again, because it is anonymous, you can recharge multiple Navigo passes from one phone, each family member does not need their own app installed.

As of July 10, 2024, this is what you can buy via the app to load onto a Navigo Pass:

• “Occasional” trip tickets: OrlyBus (€10,30) and RoissyBus (€14,50), 10 t+ tickets (€17,35) or single t+ ticket (€2,15)
• Navigo regular passes: 1 Day (starting at €8,65 based on the zones covered) or Under 26 years-old Week-end Pass ( monthly and weekly passes will not available for purchase between July 20 and Sept 8 – although as of July 10 they are not available either )

For iPhone users, a very cool feature is the support for “Express Transit” feature (you can set it up in your “Wallet””” app) which means you do not need to unlock your phone to validate your ticket and, most importantly, even if your phone is out of batteries, it will still work at the ticket gate!

For Android users, I believe that the ticket can also be validated if there is no battery left, but you might want to check if that is supported by your particular phone model.

The 2024 Paris Olympic & the special Paris 2024 passes

A few years ago, the French government had announced that public transportation would be free during the 2024 Olympic Games… That quickly changed into: “it won’t be free” to then “we’ll charge tourists twice the normal price” :-(

Valid only from July 20 to September 8, 2024, the new “Paris 2024” passes will be available.

These passes come in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 contiguous days flavors and allow you unlimited rides on the whole Île-de-France transport system in zones 1 through 5 (so you can reach all the different sports venues).

That includes

• tram / express tram

All those passes can already be purchased in advance within the Bonjour RATP app and will be activated on the first day of use (the current day going towards the duration of the travel card) and be valid until midnight of the last day.

These passes start at €16 for the 1 day to €70 for a week. There are references to a 14-day pass, but those are only available for sale online (where they ship you a preloaded card).

Be careful that these passes will not be valid before and after the expiration dates, but you can purchase the passes today so that as soon as you land in Paris, you can start using them without waiting in line.

NOTE: any t+ tickets you have already purchased (from your previous trip, for example) can be used during the Olympic Games, it’s just that you cannot purchase them anymore.

So, if you already have the Navigo Pass, and intend to come to Paris this summer, you can ‘preload’ it with 1/2 price tickets for a few more days… That’s what I just did 🙂

Limitations To be Aware of

• A Navigo Easy pass/phone can store up to 30 t+ tickets on it.
• A Navigo Easy pass/phone cannot contain both full price and reduced price t+ tickets at the same time.
• A Navigo Easy pass/phone can contain up to two Navigo Day Passes for different dates.

Make sure to not uninstall the app if you still have tickets available on your phone/watch… otherwise you will lose them

Supported Devices

To recharge a physical Navigo pass, most phones will work.

To use your phone/watch as a ticket, you will need the following:

• For iPhone users, you will need at least an iPhone 7 ou SE 2020 running iOS 17.5.
• For Apple Watch users, you will need at least an Apple Watch 6 ou SE 2 running watchOS 10.5
• For Android phone users, you will need to have Android 8 or higher installed on an NFC enabled phone. Note that according to the RATP website, the following phones are NOT compatible: Google Pixel Slate, Nocturne, Pixel, Pixel 2, Pixel 2XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a xl, Pixel 4, Pixel C, Pixel Slate, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P.
• For Android watch users, you will need a Samsung Galaxy Watch (gen 4, 5 ou 6).

Paris Transportation Zone Map

Paris and the surrounding area is divided into 5 circular transportation fare zones for use in pricing Paris public transportation passes & multi-use tickets.  This applies to passes used on Paris RER trains, buses, trams and Transilien commuter trains.  Note : These fare zones do not apply to the Paris Metro system!  For the Paris Metro, all Metro lines and all Metro stations are not affected by fare zones.  We can effectively consider Paris Metro trains as operating in a single zone even if the Metro line crosses into zone 2 or zone 3.

Paris fare zones apply to transit passes/multi-use tickets used on RER trains and Transilien trains to Disney, Versailles, CDG/Orly airports, etc. By default, Navigo Week Pass passes cover all 1-5 zones. For the Paris Olympics, the Paris 2024 Pass covers all 5 zones . Multi-use tickets like Paris Visite and other passes like  Navigo Jour Day pass have several fare zone options, like Paris zone 1-3 or Paris zone 1-5. Examples of popular destinations and their zones:

• Chateau Versailles & Orly Airport – Zone 4
• CDG Airport & Disneyland® Paris – Zone 5
• Fontainebleau – Zone 5

Paris Metro Zone

Paris Metro (urban city subway) is all a single zone even though it has stations in Zones 1, 2 & 3 as shown on this more detailed zone map including Paris Metro, RER and Transilien (intercity) trains (900KB PDF, opens a new window).   Paris Metro tickets are valid for travel anywhere* on the Paris Metro system, end-to-end, since it is a single continuous, zoneless system requiring only a single Metro Ticket / Ticket t+ (even if the Metro station is outside of Zone 1). * Orly Airport on Metro 14 is not included! ; Orly by Metro 14 has a “special airport fare”. See Orly Airport Train – Metro 14 article for more information.

The Paris regional RER train system is different & uses zones to set fare prices.

Travel between any RER stations in Paris zone 1 are the same price: the price of a single Paris Metro ticket .

Thus, we can use Paris Metro tickets to ride Paris RER trains, but only within zone 1.

Once a Paris RER train crosses the border between zone 1 and zone 2, a RER ticket (billet origine-destination) is required. For example on the south eastern edge of zone 1 are two RER C stations right next to each other: Bibliothèque François Mitterrand (in zone 1) and Ivry sur Seine (in zone 2). This trip takes 3 minutes, but costs 2.30€ with the proper RER ticket while a Paris Metro ticket (not valid for this trip) costs 2.15€ (in 2024).

Paris Zone 1 to Zone 2 needs RER ticket

If riding Paris Metro line 1, be careful at La Défense when exiting the Metro area.  Be sure to use the Metro exit and not the RER exit, both of which may be available to you due to fences which may be opened at particular times (rush hour).  A RER ticket is required to pass through RER exit turnstiles, while the Metro exit will not require a ticket and will open with weight or infrared operated gates & turnstiles.

A survival guide to Paris transport closures for the 2024 Olympics

P aris will be in the throes of Olympic fever from July 26 to August 11 for the 2024 Summer Games. Public transport routes will be revised and vehicle access will be restricted just as millions of visitors are expected in the city. Both residents and tourists are urged to review the revised routes and plan ahead.

Restrictions on access to certain areas will begin more than a week in advance as the French capital prepares for an ambitious opening ceremony that will take place over several kilometres along the River Seine – the first to take place outside of an arena in the history of the Olympic Games.

A massive security operation will be under way to secure the river route and ensure the smooth movement of the thousands of people expected to watch the ceremony from the upper and lower quays when it kicks off at 7:30pm on July 26.

As temporary spectator stands are set up around the city and the Seine undergoes a massive cleanup, several metro and RER stations will be closed from July 18 .

• A dedicated mobile application, Transport Public Paris 2024  (downloadable on Android and iOS ), has been developed to facilitate routes to competition sites and have real-time information on transport conditions.

Coloured perimeters to control traffic

Before and during the Games, competition sites will be subject to traffic bans and restrictions. Four colour-coded perimeters will be set up around the sites, with specific rules for each. An interactive map of these perimeters for each day of competition can be viewed here .

• The gray perimeter, for competition sites

Athletes, ticketed spectators and accredited people (notably journalists) are permitted within this perimeter. No vehicles are authorised except Paris 2024 accredited vehicles.

• The black protective perimeter

An area for searches and pat-downs of any person entering the competition site.

• The red perimeter prohibiting motorised traffic

Free movement of cyclists and pedestrians is permitted. Only people with a digital pass (QR code) are authorised to enter by motor vehicle.

• The blue perimeter diverting motorised traffic 

Pedestrians and cyclists are allowed to move freely, but only people with a legitimate reason to go to an address located in the blue zone are authorised to enter by motor vehicle.

For the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, a Security, Insecurity and Fight against Terrorism (SILT) perimeter close to the river and docks will be in place from July 18 to 26, the day of the opening ceremony and kick-off for the Games.

To access the perimeter, a Games Pass QR code is needed – it must be requested from the online platform in advance. Only local residents, professionals and visitors (with proof of a hotel, museum, ticket or restaurant reservation) will be allowed to enter. Vehicle access will be strictly prohibited except in rare cases.

Metro and RER station closures

• Closures from July 18:

Metro line 1: Tuileries, Concorde and Champs-Élysées - Clémenceau stations

Metro line 4: Cité

Metro line 5: Quai de la Rapée

Metro line 6: Trocadéro and Passy

Metro line 7: Châtelet, Pont Marie, Pont Neuf and Sully Morland

Metro line 8: Concorde

Metro line 9: Alma Marceau, Iéna (July 24 only) and Trocadéro

Metro line 10: Javel

Metro line 11: Châtelet

Metro line 12: Concorde

Metro line 13: Champs-Élysées - Clémenceau

On the RER C line, the Musée d'Orsay, Champs de Mars Tour Eiffel and Pont de l'Alma stations will be closed.

• For the opening ceremony on July 26:

In addition to the limited transport service outlined above, several additional closures are planned for the day of the opening ceremony, depending on the time of day.

Metro line 6 will not take passengers between Charles de Gaulle - Étoile and La Motte-Picquet - Grenelle stations

Metro line 7 will not run between Palais Royal - Musée du Louvre and Jussieu

Metro line 9 will not run between Miromesnil and Porte de Saint-Cloud

On line 10, trains do not stop at Michel-Ange-Molitor, Michel-Ange-Auteuil or Javel-André Citroën stations (after 6pm).

More stations will gradually close after 1pm on July 26:

On metro line 1: Hôtel de Ville and Saint-Paul

Metro line 4: Cité 

Metro line 8: Invalides, Tour Maubourg and École Militaire

Metro line 11: Rambuteau and Hôtel de Ville

Metro line 13: trains will not stop at Champs-Elysées - Clémenceau or Invalides 

The Solférino and Rue du Bac stations (line 12), Varenne and Saint François-Xavier (line 13), as well as Tour Maubourg and École Militaire (line 8) will be kept open for everyday travellers, but will be indicated as unavailable to spectators. Also, in case of crowds, trains may not stop at these stations.

Between 6pm and 9:30pm, line 6 will be completely closed, the terminus of line 5 will be at Bastille, the RER C will be halted inside Paris and the T3a tram will only run between Pont du Garigliano and Porte d'Ivry.

The number of metros will, however, be increased on other lines for the arrival and departure of spectators from the Opening Ceremony. When the ceremony ends, the eastern part of line 6 and the line 5 viaduct will reopen, as will the entire RER C line. The automated lines (1, 4 and 14) will operate all night (but Cité station on line 4 will remain closed).  

Gradual reopening

The gradual reopening of several metro stations will begin from July 27, the day after the opening ceremony, except for the following:

• The Champs-Elysées - Clémenceau station (lines 1 and 13) will be closed from July 20 to August 11 inclusive, and then again from August 22 to September 8.
• Concorde (lines 1, 8 and 12) and Tuileries (line 1) stations will be closed through September 1.

TGV and main train stations

The major Parisian stations remain open for travellers needing to take a TGV or a mainline train, but timetable adjustments will be in place to avoid overcrowding and delays around the Lyon, Bercy and Austerlitz stations, all three of which are located within the protected Olympic perimeter.

Austerlitz station will not be accessible by road, given the red perimeter. Pedestrian access is possible as well as special bus and taxi access.

Road access to Lyon and Bercy stations will be affected by the closure of the Bercy quay on July 26 for the Opening Ceremony. The Bercy bus station will also be closed on July 26 but will be in service for the duration of the Olympic Games (albeit running on restricted timetables).

Metro and bus prices to almost double 

Between July 20 and September 8, the single T+ ticket – which allows access to the metro, bus, tram and RER in Paris and some of its outskirts (zones 1-2) – will cost €4 euros compared to the usual €2.15.

For tickets purchased aboard buses, the usual price (€2.50 euros) will double to €5.

A Paris 2024 pass for unlimited travel will also be available for €16 per day, with rates decreasing depending on the duration. A weeklong pass will cost €70 euros, more than twice the usual price of a weekly Navigo pass (€30.75).

Access to hotels

Hotel guests – like local residents and those needing to access their places of work – will need to present a QR pass to access the secure perimeters by car. When requesting the QR code online, hotel guests will need to provide proof of ID for all those occupying the vehicle along with proof that the hotel is providing off-road parking. Ask your hotel for details. 

Olympic fan zones

Some 26 fan zones, each capable of welcoming 500 people, will be accessible free of charge. They will broadcast Olympic events and other entertainment on giant screens as well as offer catering and will remain open until 11pm. Medal-winning athletes will be celebrated at the zones located at Trocadéro and Parc de la Villette.

Closures for the Paralympic Games (August 28 - September 8)

The Summer 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games accelerated plans to improve disabled access in and around the French capital, although much work remains to be done to improve access in the longer term. The organisers of the Games committed to holding an “inclusive and accessible” competition for the estimated 350,000 disabled people who are expected to visit the French capital in summer 2024 and the estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people with limited mobility who will be using public transport each day.

Wildfires are raging across Cyprus as soaring temperatures hit 40°C in the Mediterranean.

Flames began raging in the early hours of Sunday in the mountainous area of Apesia area, near the major city of Limassol.

Five planes dispersing water were drafted in to deal with the incident, along with three fire trucks. Local media reported that the flames had burned through wild vegetation and dry trees.

But fire crews on the ground managed to keep the blaze from spreading to isolated homes in the area.

At least 20 homes near the Apesia and Korfi area were evacuated as flames spread dangerously close.

Authorities insist this was done as prevention, adding that the outlook is good, as the immediate support of the aircraft made a huge difference in ground forces efforts, helping to tame the wildfire.

A combination of hot, dry conditions and strong winds are fuelling the spread of fires in Cyprus.

Like neighbouring Greece , the Mediterranean island nation has been battling dangerous wildfires this season amid extreme heat.

In June, a 91-year-old woman became the first death of an early heatwave when Cyprus sweltered through record 45°C temperatures .

Health officials said a woman died at Nicosia General Hospital after suffering heatstroke.

The temperature prompted the Meteorological Department to issue its first ‘red alert’ warning for extreme heat.

A red hot summer

The incident in Apesia comes just days after a wildfire broke out in the Paphos district village of Pelathousa, caused by broken glass.

Paphos police Michalis Nikolaou said shards had refracted the sun’s rays, creating sparks.

Almost four million people visited Cyprus in 2023, with 2024 set to be another big year for tourism.

Cyprus is generally considered to be a safe holiday destination and the Foreign Office has not updated its advice on travelling to the island, despite the fires.

Tourists are encouraged to take care in woodland areas, and never to light barbecues outside designated areas.

On June 19, Lebanon’s Shia Islamist political leader, Hassan Nasrallah, warned that Cyprus would come under attack if it allowed Israel to use its air bases during any conflict with Lebanon.

Cyprus is closer geographically to the Israel and the Middle East than any other European country, and holidaymakers may be concerned by mounting tensions between Hezbollah and the IDF.

But while Nasrallah’s warning is sure to unsettle tourists, the Foreign Office does not currently warn against travel to Cyprus.

The website notes that events in the Middle East have led to demonstrations across the country. It advises travellers to avoid protests and leave the area if one develops.
