A UK man on vacation with his family in Jamaica died after attempting to partake in a challenge that involved drinking all 21 cocktails featured on a bar’s menu.

Timothy Southern had finished 12 of the menu’s various cocktails when he returned to his hotel room at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean in Saint Ann, where he later died, ITV News reported.

A pathologist in Kingston said the 53-year-old Staffordshire man’s cause of death was “acute gastroenteritis due to alcohol consumption.”

Staffordshire-area coroner Emma Serrano ruled his death was alcohol-related, the outlet reported.

An initial investigation into Southern’s death found that he had been drinking brandy and beer throughout the morning.

At some point during the day, Southern met two Canadian women celebrating a birthday.

The women told him they were trying to complete the 21-cocktail challenge before midnight as part of their festivities.

It was not immediately clear how quickly Southern consumed the 12 cocktails.

His family members — who were on the trip with him — said they tried in vain to help him.

“He was on his back choking. I put him in the recovery position and screamed for an ambulance. He was making a gurgling sound. As soon as he was in the recovery position, he vomited. I was shouting his name with no response,” one of his family members told authorities.

The family has since expressed outrage and dissatisfaction with the emergency crews who tried to save him in his hotel, claiming they were unprepared to effectively take care of him.

“When the nurse arrived, I said had an ambulance been called and she said ‘no.’ I thought she would take over. But that was not the case. I noticed he was starting to lose temperature. I checked his pulse and couldn’t find it,” the relative said.

“She said he had a pulse. I was starting to lose it. I got a full look at his face and I thought he had passed away.”

The relative claimed that the nurse was not adequately trained in providing life-saving measures.

“I said, ‘Don’t just sit there looking at him, start CPR.’ She only gave him chest compressions. Maybe if she had known what she was doing, maybe he would still be here.”

The grieving relative added: “The service and treatment he received was disgusting.”

Timothy Alan Southern, a 53-year-old from Staffordshire, England, was on a family vacation when he undertook the challenge, ITV News reported .

The coroner's report, issued last Wednesday and seen by Insider, said Southern was found in his hotel room at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean in the island's tourist hub of Saint Ann in May last year.

He died of "acute gastritis with associated alcohol intoxication," the report said, adding that he had been "drinking heavily during the day."

After earlier consuming brandy and beer, Southern joined a pair of Canadian tourists who were celebrating a birthday with the cocktail challenge, ITV News reported, citing the inquest hearing.

After consuming 12 of the 21 cocktails, Southern returned to his hotel room. Family members raised the alarm when they found him there, the UK outlet the Stoke Sentinel reported .

An unnamed family member at the inquest criticized the medical care Southern received after a nurse was alerted, calling his treatment "disgusting" and suggesting that he might have survived with better care, the outlet reported.

"He was on his back choking," the outlet reported the family member saying.

"I put him in the recovery position and screamed for an ambulance," they continued. "He was making a gurgling sound. As soon as he was in the recovery position he vomited. I was shouting his name with no response."

The family member said that when asked if she had called an ambulance, the nurse said no, and only gave chest compressions rather than full CPR.

"I thought she would take over. But that was not the case. I noticed he was starting to lose temperature. I checked his pulse and couldn't find it," they added.

"Maybe if she had known what she was doing, maybe he would still be here," the family member said of the nurse.

After drinking 12 cocktails, Southern decided to go back to his room, where he was later on found unresponsive by his family.

“He was on his back choking. I put him in the recovery position and screamed for an ambulance. He was making a gurgling sound. As soon as he was in the recovery position he vomited. I was shouting his name with no response,” a family member told the inquest.

They criticized the treatment the 53-year-old received at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean hotel. The family claims that the hotel nurse didn’t call an ambulance and said he still had a pulse but allegedly didn’t perform correct CPR.

“I got a full look at his face, and I thought he had passed away. I said, ‘Don’t just sit there looking at him, start CPR’. She only gave him chest compressions,” they told the inquest. “The service and treatment he received was disgusting.”

Emma Serrano, a Staffordshire area coroner, ruled Southern’s death as alcohol-related, as a pathologist in Kingston, Jamaica, said the cause was “acute gastroenteritis due to alcohol consumption.”

Acute gastroenteritis is a common infection or inflammation of the stomach that can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomachache, and that usually results from medication, pathogens, and other diseases and syndromes — it can also be triggered by excessive alcohol consumption .

However, an inquest reported that a toxicology report could take three years to return from Jamaica.

A GoFundMe was created to raise money to transport Southern’s body back to the U.K. and pay for his funeral, as the family claims the man was not covered by life insurance.

A bar in Jamaica challenged guests to drink all 21 cocktails on its menu—and it led to one British man’s death. According to ITV, 53-year-old Timothy Southern had already been drinking when he came across two women undertaking the challenge at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean in Saint Ann. He decided to join them and reportedly made his way through 12 cocktails before returning to his room, where he collapsed and later died. Examiners in Jamaica and the United Kingdom both determined that alcohol consumption caused Southern’s death, but Southern’s family alleges that a faulty response from medics may also have played a role. “The service and treatment he received was disgusting,” one family member reportedly told investigators. The family has since launched a GoFundMe to bring Southern’s body back home.

JAMAICA (TND) — A tourist vacationing in Jamaica died after trying to drink all 21 cocktails on a bar's menu, according to ITV News.

ITV says Timothy Southern, a man from the U.K. on a holiday with his family in 2022, had consumed 12 cocktails as part of a drinking challenge before returning to his room at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean in Saint Ann, Jamaica.

A coroner in Southern's hometown of Staffordshire ruled his death as alcohol-related, and a pathologist in Jamaica listed the cause of death as "acute gastroenteritis due to alcohol consumption."

The outlet says Southern had already been drinking beer and brandy in the morning when he met two women trying to complete the 21-drink challenge before midnight to celebrate one of their birthdays. The man's family has criticized attempts to revive him in the hotel room.

He was on his back choking," a family member told the inquest. "I put him in the recovery position and screamed for an ambulance. He was making a gurgling sound. As soon as he was in the recovery position he vomited. I was shouting his name with no response. When the nurse arrived I said had an ambulance been called and she said 'no'. I thought she would take over. But that was not the case."

An inquest is a judicial inquiry in common law jurisdictions, particularly one to determine a person's cause of death. Southern's inquest said toxicology reports could take three years to come back from Jamaica.

"I noticed he was starting to lose temperature," the family member continued in the inquest. "I checked his pulse and couldn't find it. She said he had a pulse. I was starting to lose it. I got a full look at his face and I thought he had passed away."

The family member called the treatment Southern received "disgusting."

Through a message on GoFundMe, Southern's family is seeking financial support to bring her body back to Britain.

"As you're all probably aware; unfortunately our dad, Timmy Southern passed away whilst on holiday in Jamaica. Unfortunately, after doing some digging to find information about his insurance we have found out that he's not actually covered by his bank (as he had originally thought)," reads a family statement.

"This leaves us with an impossibly large amount of money to find in order to bring him home and pay for his funeral. We know dad was loved by so many with friends all over the world, the biggest character most would ever come across.

"We're hoping by doing this we could try to raise as much money as we can to get him home so that we, as a family, get to say our goodbyes. Anything that is left over from the funds we raise will go to the MIND charity."

At the time of this article, a total of 9,400 pounds sterling (almost 12,000 dollars) had been raised, thanks to 242 donations.

The hotel did not have adequate medical staff

The family has since expressed outrage and dissatisfaction with the emergency crews who tried to save him at his hotel, claiming they were not prepared to treat him properly.

"When the nurse arrived I said had an ambulance been called and she said 'no'. I thought she would take over. But that was not the case. I noticed he was starting to lose temperature. I checked his pulse and couldn't find it," said a relative.

"She said he had a pulse. I was starting to lose it. I got a full look at his face and I thought he had passed away. I said, "Don't just sit there looking at him, start CPR".

"She only gave him chest compressions. Maybe if she had known what she was doing, maybe he would still be here. The service and treatment he received was disgusting."

A British tourist died while on a family holiday in Jamaica after trying to drink all 21 cocktails on a bar menu as part of a challenge.

Timothy Southern, 53, from Lichfield in Staffordshire, was on holiday with his children, sister, and other family members in May 2022 when the incident occurred.

Mr Southern was staying at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean in Jamaica’s tourist town of Saint Ann.

An inquest into his death heard that Mr Southern had already been drinking brandy and beer in the morning when he met two Canadian women trying to complete the 21 cocktail challenge on the pool bar menu before midnight to celebrate one of their birthdays.

The 53-year-old reportedly made his way through 12 cocktails before returning to his room, where he collapsed and later died. He was then discovered by his family members.

Examiners in Jamaica and the United Kingdom both determined that alcohol consumption caused Mr Southern’s death.

ITV report that a pathologist in Jamaica gave the cause of death as 'acute gastroenteritis due to alcohol consumption'.

This was later confirmed by Staffordshire area coroner Emma Serrano who ruled the death as alcohol-related but said that toxicology reports could take three years to come back from Jamaica.

What has been said?

Mr Southern’s family has criticised the response of the emergency services and alleged that a faulty response from medics may have played a role in his death.

One relative told the inquest: "He was on his back choking. I put him in the recovery position and screamed for an ambulance.

"He was making a gurgling sound. As soon as he was in the recovery position, he vomited. I was shouting his name with no response.

"When the nurse arrived, I said had an ambulance been called and she said ‘no.’ I thought she would take over. But that was not the case. I noticed he was starting to lose temperature. I checked his pulse and couldn’t find it.

"She said he had a pulse. I was starting to lose it. I got a full look at his face and I thought he had passed away.”

"I said, 'Don't just sit there looking at him, start CPR.' She only gave him chest compressions. Maybe if she had known what she was doing, maybe he would still be here."

"The service and treatment he received was disgusting," the family member added, according to the report.

A man on holiday in Jamaica died after attempting to drink all 21 cocktails on the hotel pool bar menu, an inquest heard.

Timothy Southern, from Lichfield, Staffordshire, met two Canadian women who had been trying to complete the challenge to mark one of their birthdays and the 53-year-old decided to join them.

He had already drunk beer and brandy in the morning and managed to get through 12 cocktails before going to his room at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean, in Saint Ann, his inquest heard.

He became sick and later died at the hotel. Now loved-ones have hit out at hotel staff, including a nurse, over how the situation was handled after the alarm was raised.

Timothy was on holiday with his sister, children, and other relatives when the tragedy struck in May, 2022.

The family say they alerted staff when they realised he was seriously ill.

Speaking at his inquest, one of them said: "He was on his back choking. I put him in the recovery position and screamed for an ambulance. He was making a gurgling sound.

"As soon as he was in the recovery position he vomited. I was shouting his name with no response.

"When the nurse arrived I said had an ambulance been called and she said 'no'. I thought she would take over. But that was not the case. I noticed he was starting to lose temperature. I checked his pulse and couldn't find it.

"She said he had a pulse. I was starting to lose it. I got a full look at his face and I thought he had passed away.

"I said, 'Don't just sit there looking at him, start CPR'. She only gave him chest compressions. Maybe if she had known what she was doing, maybe he would still be here. The service and treatment he received was disgusting."

A pathologist in Kingston, Jamaica, gave the cause of death as 'acute gastroenteritis due to alcohol consumption'. But the inquest heard toxicology reports could take three years to come back from Jamaica.

Staffordshire area coroner Emma Serrano has ruled the death was alcohol-related.

British tourist dies after trying to drink every cocktail on Jamaican bar menu Back to video

According to ITV, Timothy Southern, 43, from Lichfield, England, had finished 12 drinks as part of the bar challenge at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean in Saint Ann when he went to his room.

That’s where he later collapsed and died.

Southern had reportedly already been drinking when he came across two women undertaking the challenge and opted in himself.

Examiners in Jamaica and the U.K. both determined that alcohol consumption caused the man’s death, but Southern’s family alleged that a faulty response from medics might have also played a role.

“The service and treatment he received was disgusting,” a family member reportedly told investigators.

The family has since launched a GoFundMe to bring their loved one’s body back home.
