Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

5 star trek: discovery characters who left burnham’s ship (& who came back), star trek: discovery season 5 has a tribute to kenneth mitchell.

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 7 - "Erigah"

  • L'ak tragically dies in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7, "Erigah."
  • Moll makes a desperate move by teaming up with the Breen to find the Progenitors' treasure.
  • Major consequences are in play as Moll seeks to resurrect L'ak with the Progenitors' technology.

Yes, that major character death in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7, "Erigah," really happened. Written by M. Raven Metzner and directed by Jon Dudkowski, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7 sees Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) apprehended by Starfleet, but the Breen arrive at the United Federation of Planets' doorstep to collect the nephew of Primarch Ruhn (Tony Nappo). Refusing to get caught between the Federation and the Breen, Moll and L'ak enact a desperate plan to escape that tragically backfires.

Moll and L'ak were introduced as Star Trek: Discovery season 5's villains racing the USS Discovery in the hunt for the ancient treasure of the Progenitors. But Moll and L'ak's backstory, revealed in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors," shows them as troubled lovers on the run from the Breen, who placed an Erigah (blood bounty) on their heads. L'ak is a Breen and the nephew of Primarch Ruhn, one of the warlords competing to become the new emperor of the Breen Imperium. Star Trek: Discover y season 5, episode 7, "Erigah" clarified L'ak's true importance to Primarch Ruhn: L'ak is the Scion, a direct blood descendant of the late Breen Emperor. Controlling L'ak would bring validity to whoever becomes the next Emperor of the Breen.

L'ak was seriously injured in a fight with Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) aboard the ISS Enterprise in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5.

As Burnham seeks the universe's greatest treasure in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, she'll need help from a host of new and returning characters.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 7 Really Killed Off L’ak

The scion of the breen imperium is dead.

L'ak dies in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7, "Erigah." Moll and L'ak were beamed into the USS Discovery's medical bay so that the grievously injured Breen could receive treatment from Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) . But Moll and L'ak, who only want freedom to be together, decide to escape instead of letting the Federation and the Breen decide their fates. The Breen Scion created a distraction so that Moll break out of sickbay and steal one of Discovery's shuttles, but L'ak accidentally gave himself a fatal overdose of tricordrizine.

L'ak's death is a tragedy, not just for Moll but for the Federation.

Moll didn't make it to the USS Discovery's sickbay, and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) was able to convince her to lay down her phaser and return to the medical bay to see the dying L'ak. Captain Burnham persuaded Primarch Ruhn to allow a Breen physican to treat L'ak but there was no way to save the Scion. L'ak's death is a tragedy, not just for Moll but for the Federation. Because Moll doesn't trust the Federation, she told Primarch Ruhn about the Progenitors' treasure, which means the Breen has now entered the race for the greatest and possibly most destructive power in the galaxy.

The Breen capture the Progenitors' technology and destroy the Federation in a possible future Captain Burnham saw in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange."

What Happens To Moll In Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Moll has one desperate gamble to resurrect l'ak.

Moll had a surprise for Primarch Ruhn and the Breen: she and L'ak are married. Because she is the Scion's wife, Moll was allowed to leave with the Breen, promising to find the Progenitors' technology for Primarch Ruhn. Moll throwing her lot in with the Breen, who despise her, is her desperate gamble to save L'ak. The Progenitors' life-giving technology is said to have the power to bring back the dead, and Moll hopes she can resurrect L'ak and the Breen will allow them to leave together in exchange for the Progenitors' power to conquer the galaxy.

The Federation council led by President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) agreed to turn Moll over to the Breen rather than instigate an immediate war.

Moll is between a rock and a hard place since she has to lead the Breen to the Progenitors' treasure without the clues . The Breen's only gambit is to follow the USS Discovery to the treasure and then overpower them and take it. Then, Moll has to persuade Primarch Ruhn to both let her resurrect L'ak, which would give Primarch Ruhn legitimacy to become Emperor, and hope Ruhn allows them their freedom. However, if Moll stayed on the USS Discovery, the Breen would have attacked the Federation, and she has no way of persuading Starfleet to let her use the Progenitors' technology to bring back L'ak. The death of L'ak launches Star Trek: Discovery season 5 toward its endgame and the conclusion of the series.

Former S.H.I.E.L.D. director Clark Gregg is now heading up the FBI, in Season 2 of Paramount+’s Criminal Minds : Evolution .

That’s just one of several castings exclusively detailed by TVLine below, along with your first look at a teaser trailer.

In Evolution Season 1, the BAU’s elite profilers went up against Elias Voit, an UnSub who had spent the COVID pandemic cultivating a network of serial killers. The team in question was comprised of franchise vets Paget Brewster (as Emily Prentiss), Joe Mantegna (David Rossi), A.J. Cook (JJ Jareau), Kirsten Vangsness (Penelope Garcia), Aisha Tyler (Dr. Tara Lewis) and Adam Rodriguez (Luke Alvez), while  Friday Night Lights  vet Zach Gilford played the aforementioned Elias.

The new season, premiering Thursday, June 6 (with the first two of 10 episodes), picks up as the team investigates the mystery of Gold Star. As that conspiracy unfolds, the BAU is met with an unexpected complication when Voit negotiates a deal that transfers him to federal custody, in the BAU’s own backyard.

As showrunner Erica Messer shared with TVLine during our set visit, only two weeks have passed since Voit’s capture, giving Prentiss only a bit of time “to sort of figure out what’s going with this Gold Star mystery that she thinks had something to do with [FBI Deputy Director] Doug Bailey’s death.

“She’s having a little survivor’s guilt,” Messer previewed. “She’s struggling with that quite a bit.”

For the new season, Brewster, Mantegna, Cook, Vangsness, Tyler and Rodriguez are all returning — as are both Gilford and Ryan-James Hatanaka, who played onetime person of interest Tyler Green. (Mantegna, Cook, Tyler and Rodriguez and Gilford also directed episodes.)

Read on to find out who Gregg, Brian White and Tuc Watkins will be playing… to get scoop on a return from the original CBS series… and to watch the teaser trailer.

Clark Gregg

Clark Gregg

Gregg will appear in multiple episodes as FBI Director Ray Madison, who has brokered a deal with Elias Voit to assist with a major investigation. The Director gives the BAU the arduous task of utilizing Voit and his connections, while (hopefully!) keeping the serial killer at arm’s length.

Gregg’s previous TV credits include Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. , Painkiller, The New Adventures of Old Christine , The West Wing and a recent Will Trent guest spot.

Brian White

Brian White

White appears in four episodes as Vincent Orlov, Elias Voit’s shady attorney. Voit utilizes Orlov as his “cat’s paw” to gain footing against the BAU while he’s locked in an isolation cell. White’s previous TV credits include The Black Hamptons , Ray Donovan , Ambitions and Chicago Fire .

Tuc Watkins

Tuc Watkins

Watkins appears in multiple episodes as Frank Church, a presumed advocate for kids — though during their investigation, the BAU turns their sights onto Church when they come to suspect sinister motives. Watkins’ previous TV credits include Uncoupled , Black Monday , Desperate Housewives, Beggars and Choosers and One Life to Live .

Paul F. Tompkins

Paul F. Tompkins

The stand-up vet will reprise his Criminal Minds Season 15, Episode 4 role as Brian Garrity, a former neighbor of Emily Prentiss and a diehard conspiracy theorist who is being manipulated by someone intent on derailing the BAU’s season-long investigation. In addition to loads and loads of voice work over the decades (most recently in Star Trek: Lower Decks and The Great North ) — and The Thrilling Adventure Hour , a podcast he has done with Paget Brewster — Tompkins’ on-camera TV credits include Rutherford Falls , Comedy Bang! Bang! and Mr. Show with Bob and David .

Ok, how can you not mention Paul F Tompkins years of playing Paget Brewster’s partner in (drunken paranormal) crime (solving) Frank Doyle in The Thrilling Adventure Hour? While not a TV credit, the connection to one of the stars of Criminal Minds seems worth mentioning. Hopefully this time they’ll get to interact a bit more.

Thanks, Matt. You’re the best!

The video is no available in my country. That would be Canada. 🙄

Not available in my country. Not surprised. I’ll wait for YouTube.

When will it be available to watch

“The new season, premiering Thursday, June 6 (with the first two of 10 episodes)….”

Can’t wait!!!!!!!!! 🥰🥳 just wish we could have my fantasy husband Dr Reid and the kickass (eye candy) Derek Morgan back.

A 'Star Trek: Picard' Star Is Going to Med School on This Week's 'Chicago Med'

Meet Naomi Howard, student doctor.

The Big Picture

  • Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut joins Chicago Med as Student Doctor Naomi Howard in a new episode.
  • The episode will revolve around treating a bipolar artist and Dr. Ripley keeping a cancer diagnosis secret.
  • Season 9 of Chicago Med is heading down a darker path as new characters bring fresh energy to the show.

A new doctor is in the building for Chicago Med , and this one comes from the far reaches of space. Following her most recent stint aboard Star Trek: Picard Season 3, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut will walk through the doors of the Gaffney Medical Center as Student Doctor Naomi Howard on tonight's episode of the hit NBC medical drama, titled "I Think There Is Something You're Not Telling Me," at 8 p.m. ET. Sharpe Chestnut confirmed her entrance with a photo of her new uniform on X (formerly Twitter) , showing she's ready to learn from her new colleagues.

The new episode will apparently thrust her directly into the action without much time to get her feet under her. Per the synopsis, tonight's installment will see Dr. Charles ( Oliver Platt ) working closely with a medical student, likely Howard, to treat a bipolar artist. The young doctor will be learning on the fly while, elsewhere in the hospital, Dr. Ripley ( Luke Mitchell ) tries his best to keep Sully's ( Daniel Dorr ) cancer diagnosis under wraps. Season 9 is heading down a darker path with Ripley and, if the title is any indication, his past and present may all come to a head this week as he's prodded for answers . Johnson ( Henderson Wade ) is also pushing hard to work his way into Med's trauma fellowship.

Sharpe Chestnut's television star has been rising fast in recent years, culminating in her turn opposite Mika Burton as Ensign Sidney La Forge , the older daughter of Geordi La Forge ( LeVar Burton ) and helmsman of the USS Titan in Picard . She's previously enjoyed roles in Issa Rae 's Rap Sh!t and Homeland , as well as the first season of Freeform's hit mystery series Cruel Summer . Broadcast television isn't an unfamiliar landscape to her either, as she previously joined the team at NCIS: Los Angeles as FBI Special Agent Summer Morehurst for a pair of episodes.

'One Chicago' Isn't Going Anywhere Anytime Soon

Season 9 of Chicago Med kicked off back in January and, since then, things have continued to look up for the ever-popular One Chicago universe. All three shows, including Med , Chicago Fire , and Chicago P.D. , were renewed for new episodes during the 2024-2025 season back in March. The franchise has remained a staple in NBC's lineup of dramas even as this latest season has seen some turnover in the network's schedule with the end of Quantum Leap and, more recently, Extended Family . Gaffney, in particular, has been thriving with a few new additions, including the aforementioned Mitchell alongside Grey’s Anatomy veteran Sophia Ali .

Chicago Med still has a couple of nights to go before Season 9 concludes its 13-episode run. Tonight's installment featuring Sharpe Chestnut premieres at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. All previous episodes are available to stream on Peacock.

The city's most highly skilled medical team saves lives, while navigating their unique interpersonal relationships.

Star Trek: DS9 Guest Star Was Almost TNG's Captain Picard

  • Armin Shimerman reveals Stephen Macht was second choice for Captain Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
  • Macht portrayed Bajoran General Krim on Deep Space Nine, leading a coup against Starfleet to gain control of the station.
  • Although Macht lost out on the role of Picard, he played Krim with diplomatic honor and made a memorable adversary on DS9.

It's hard to imagine anyone else besides Sir Patrick Stewart in the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation , but a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine guest star was almost cast as the Captain of the USS Enterprise-D, according to DS9 's Quark actor Armin Shimerman. As a hub of activity near the Bajoran wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant, the Deep Space Nine station was host to many Bajorans, Starfleet officers, and colorful visitors, so it's not surprising that casting directors might turn to actors who had previously auditioned for Star Trek roles to portray Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's recurring characters and guest stars.

As the director of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1, episode 1, "Encounter at Farpoint", Corey Allen was able to offer input regarding the casting process for TNG . Allen went on to direct 4 more episodes of TNG and 4 episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , including DS9 season 2, episode 2, "The Circle". When it came time to cast actors for the guest roles in "The Circle", it's possible that Star Trek director Corey Allen referred back to the shortlist of actors considered for Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and recommended a memorable standout to portray a role on DS9 that required a similar sense of leadership.

Star Trek: TNG Cast Outrageous Actor As Riker Before Jonathan Frakes

Anyone but Jonathan Frakes playing Commander William Riker is unimaginable, but Star Trek: TNG originally cast someone else for the role.

Stephen Macht Was Second Choice for Star Trek: TNG's Captain Picard

Patrick stewart famously won the role of picard.

During a discussion of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2, episode 2, "The Circle" on The Delta Flyers podcast, Armin Shimerman reveals that Star Trek: DS9 guest star Stephen Macht, who played Bajoran Over-General Krim, was in the running to play Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation . Macht actually got far enough in the audition process for TNG to be the second choice for Picard, but of course, Patrick Stewart ultimately won the role. Read Shimerman's quote below and listen to The Delta Flyers , starting at the 10:20 timestamp.

Armin Shimerman: "Stephen and I have worked together many times, doing theater together, so I know this for a fact: Stephen Macht was the second choice for Picard. It is interesting to me ... that here's Corey Allen, who directed the pilot [of Star Trek: The Next Generation] and had a choice in who was going to play Picard. Was it Corey who said we're going to get Stephen Macht to play this part?"

Stephen Macht is Bajoran General Krim in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Season 2

Krim only made one appearance on ds9.

Stephen Macht played Bajoran Over-General Krim in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2, episodes 2 & 3, "The Circle" and "The Siege". As the highest-ranking officer in the Bajoran militia, Krim led Bajor's coup to take DS9 from Starfleet, believing the move was in Bajor's best interests, instead of being designed by the Bajoran extremist group, The Circle. Krim made an interesting adversary to Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), and respected Sisko as a military peer. In The Delta Flyers , Armin Shimerman points out script notes in "The Circle" suggesting Krim could have returned, but Stephen Macht's Krim was never seen again after DS9 season 2's 3-part opener .

As Bajoran Over-General Krim, Stephen Macht wasn't among the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine guest stars who was hidden beneath heavy prosthetic makeup, so genre fans may recognize Macht from his other guest starring appearances on 1990s sci-fi television . Macht appeared in guest roles in FOX's Millennium and Sliders , and another acclaimed space station show, Babylon 5. Earlier in his career, Stephen Macht starred in 1980s films The Mountain Men and The Monster Squad. Although Stephen Macht ultimately lost the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation to Patrick Stewart, Macht portrayed Over-General Krim in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with similar diplomatic honor.
