Taylor Swift, fans make Detroit sparkle at magnificent Eras Tour stop

Ford field felt like taylor's dream house on friday, the first night of the singer's two-night stand in the motor city..

She was ready for it, and so were her fans.

The galaxy's biggest pop star brought the century's hottest concert tour to Ford Field on Friday night as Taylor Swift delivered a commanding three-hour, 15-minute performance to an extremely sold-out crowd that loudly, proudly sang back every verse and every chorus to the supernova at the center of the show.

The mammoth 44-song set, part of Swift's career encapsulating Eras Tour, was an immaculate presentation that managed to feel alternately grand and intimate, depending on which way the wind was blowing at any particular moment. It was a definitive statement from the signature pop star of our time.

Swift comfortably glided through her eras, dedicating mini-sets within the show to nine of her 10 studio albums, without ever sacrificing what makes her such a special artist: her genuine connection with her fans.

The concert experience, however, was much bigger than just the show itself. Fans have waited five years since Swift's last tour, 2018's Reputation Stadium Tour, and the global pandemic that was wedged in the space between the two outings only intensified Swift's bond with her fans.

She released two albums during lockdown, the folk-accented "folklore" and "evermore" sets, and then hit fans with last year's moody pop set "Midnights." She emerged more popular than ever, and now, 17 years into her career, she's defying the odds and entering rarified air for a pop performer: demand is such for the tour that the 33-year-old could sell out another pair of Ford Field dates in a flash, without batting an eye. (She plays Ford Field again on Saturday night.)

All that is to say fans didn't just attend Friday's concert, they showed up and showed out for it. The streets outside the stadium looked like an explosion of pink and glitter, as fans wore colorful dresses, bejeweled heels, glittery hats and homemade wares, outfits they'd worked on and planned for weeks leading up to the concert. Swift's fans made the city streets outside Ford Field absolutely sparkle.

Fans traded friendship bracelets and came with full armfuls of homemade bands to swap and trade with one another. The sense of community made everyone feel like a friend, or at least a member of the same tribe. Outside the venue, even the cops on patrol sported friendship bracelets on their wrists.

So the mood was Taylor-made, if you will, for the singer, who's not just a superstar — "Midnights" is currently the No. 1 album in America, thanks to a recent re-release — but she's besties with everyone in the room. Fans don't come to a Taylor Swift concert to passively sit back and watch, they come to participate, and that involves shouting along with every word at the top of one's lungs, just as everyone around them is also doing.

Take "22" for example, which younger fans belted in anticipation of being 22 and older fans sang with a fondness for the days when they were 22. Swift writes about relatable specifics and universal feelings that everyone can attach and assign their own meanings to. Swift herself wouldn't have it any other way.

"You guys are performing out there," Swift told the crowd about a dozen songs into the set, during the "evermore" portion of the evening. "Don't think I don't see you!"

Swift was battling the onset of a cold on Friday night, at one point pausing to ask for a tissue and blowing her nose. It was a sign she's indeed human, although otherwise she seemed to barely break a sweat as she nailed the show's rigid choreography with military precision throughout the night, all the while coming off cool, calm and collected. She made the work of being a megastar look like a breeze.

"Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince" opened the evening, kicking off the set dedicated to 2019's soaring "Lover" album. Bracelets handed out to the crowd lit up in patterns of reds, purples, yellows and blues, making the stands twinkle like a nighttime sky.

"Oh Detroit, you're making me feel phenomenal right now!" said Swift, who later reminisced about the first time she performed at Ford Field, playing the National Anthem before the Detroit Lions' Thanksgiving day game in 2006 when she was just 16 years old. "It felt like the biggest place I'd ever seen," she said.

Now it's familiar ground. Friday was Swift's fifth concert at the venue, and only the Lions and Kenny Chesney have played there more. As she transitioned between songs, and songs between eras — "Lover" to "Fearless," "Fearless" to "evermore," and so on — everything moved like clockwork, and nothing felt short-changed.

In order to navigate through a 44-song set there needs to be some trims here and there, and not everything is going to be performed in full. But songs were given more than a passing nod and nothing was flown through or cheapened, and the epic "All Too Well" was given its full, lush, Taylor's Version, 10-Minute Version presentation.

The gargantuan stage, which extended more than halfway across the stadium floor, and the fully realized visuals — including a massive video screen component as a backdrop — allowed Swift to give each song and era a dynamic presentation all its own. "The Man" saw Swift donning a glittery sport coat and quite literally climbing the corporate ladder, scaling a large office set until she was perched on the top floor, while "tolerate it" saw her working through a scene of a fraught relationship during a tense dinner at a long dining room table.

She played woodland fairy by climbing to the top of a cabin set and laying down on the roof during "the 1" and displayed bad girl pop attitude during "Ready for It." "Vigilante S---," meanwhile, was given an almost burlesque presentation, with Swift and her dancers performing a chair routine that emitted screams of delight from the adoring crowd members.

And she still had time to be a fairy tale princess ("You Belong With Me," "Love Story"), a vulnerable dreamer ("Delicate"), a cheerleader ("We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," "Shake It Off"), a pop villain ("Look What You Made Me Do"), a witchy Steve Nicks-type ("willow") and more. There's a Taylor for all seasons, and at various points the seasons on stage even managed to change from autumn to winter to summer.

There was barely a break in the action and no lulls during the marathon set, which included readings of "Speak Now's" "Haunted" and "Red's" "I Almost Do" during the acoustic, two-song "surprise" portion of the evening. (Both songs were tour debuts, as Swift works a pair of back catalog faves into every show.) A team of up to 15 dancers joined her at various points in the show, as her band occasionally made their way out front but mostly stayed tucked in the wings of the stage.

As for the fans, well, it was a night of making memories and a night that won't soon be forgotten. "Detroit, I love you so much!" Swift said near the close of the evening, which wrapped with confetti cannons exploding and fireworks going off at the climax of "Karma."

Saturday she does it again for another group there to make their own memories with their bestie. And Swift, who is nothing less than at the top of her game, will no doubt be ready for the challenge.

"I’m so excited to go back out on tour again in 2011! The 'Fearless Tour' was so much fun and even more unforgettable than I ever imagined, and I can't wait to get back out and play my new music from Speak Now! The fans have been so amazing and I'm thrilled to play in new cities around the world and meet even more of my fans in 2011!" [3]

While promoting her current album, Swift mentioned her excitement for her upcoming tour. She stated the tour was going to be "big" and "extensive". Before the tour commenced, Swift performed "The Allure of Taylor Swift" aboard the MS Allure of the Seas at the Allure of the Seas Aquatheater, as apart Royal Caribbean Cruises in January 2011. [6]

Taylor Swift’s Ford Field “Eras” show excites fans and evokes nostalgia

Taylor Swift at her Detroit concert.

It’s no secret that I’m a Swiftie.

I’ve written about Taylor countless times, and I’ll probably continue to do so for the rest of my time with The Michigan Daily (for instance, keep an eye out for my Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) review after the album drops on July 7).

I’ve listened to her songs, written about her music, stayed up late for her new releases, gone to her shows, driven myself crazy trying to figure out her Easter eggs and much, much more.

But I feel like I didn’t really understand what it meant to be a Swiftie until I attended the first Detroit show of her Eras Tour.

Even before the show started, the mood was set. We saw people decked out in elaborate, over-the-top eras-themed outfits the second we walked out of our car and into the parking garage. Throughout our 10-minute walk to Ford Field, we were joined by even more concertgoers, each in more extravagant outfits than the last. Tons of “ Bejeweled ” looks, more cowboy hats and boots than I could count, pink flouncy dresses, a lot of black leather and so much Eras Tour merch.

From the literal second I stepped out of the car until the moment I started driving away post-concert, I felt like part of this massive, sprawling community — a community I sometimes forget the sheer size of. All of these people were here for one purpose: to experience this concert. And sharing the Eras Tour (this once-in-a-lifetime concert) with all these Swifties was a truly unique and special experience.

Before I get to the actual concert (which, by the way, was easily the best concert I’ve ever gone to and probably will ever go to), I want to highlight another really unique aspect of this tour: the friendship bracelets. For those of you who may not know, in her song “You’re On Your Own, Kid,” Taylor has a line about “ mak(ing) the friendship bracelets ,” and as a result, fans attending her shows have been prepping for their concerts by making beaded friendship bracelets to trade with their fellow fans. I was one of those devoted, prepared fans, arriving at Ford Field with an armful of bracelets (only slightly cutting off my circulation). One of the most special, magical moments of the entire night was when I was able to give bracelets to little girls, shining with excitement about their first Taylor show. That really sums up what Taylor does for her fans — she nurtures this aura of togetherness and camaraderie that sees no age, gender, race or other factor. We’re all there; we’re all Swifties. And it’s kind of beautiful.

Now, for what you’ve all been waiting for — the concert itself. Gracie Abrams and girl in red opened the show, doing an amazing job of getting the crowd excited. It’s a daunting task to open for someone as huge as Taylor Swift, but both acts did the job impeccably and with no visible fear. The crowd was ready for Taylor, and a huge part of that was due to the performances that Gracie Abrams and girl in red gave.

So what about Taylor? I know for a fact it’s been discussed already, but it warrants further discussion. This woman sang 44 songs over the span of three hours with minimal breaks, just so her fans could experience the last 17 years of her music. My feet were hurting from standing, dancing and Instagram takeover-ing only one hour in, so I truly don’t know how she did it.

But she did.

Starting with the Lover era, she took to the stage with pastel colors and the line “It’s been a long time coming but / it’s me and you, that’s my whole world,” signifying the role that her fans play in her career and her life. Followed by “Cruel Summer” (and with it, the bridge to end all bridges), she really started out strong.

After a few more Lover songs, we entered the Fearless era. She may have asked us to go back to high school with her as she sang “You Belong With Me,” but I was transported back to elementary school and the feeling of dancing in my bedroom and singing into my hairbrush as I jammed out to this song (Which, by the way, I still do, and you’re lying to yourself if you claim you don’t).

She switched gears with evermore , and while most would highlight “champagne problems” as the best part of that era, I think “marjorie” stole the show. A song written about her maternal grandma, the sheer emotion she felt while singing was palpable. When the audience took out their phones to light up the stadium, she seemed as mesmerized by us as we were by her. And when her grandmother’s voice joined in the song, it felt like that moment was suspended in time for a second, where we all just breathed and took in what we were experiencing, Taylor included.

After a quick outfit change (and a huge shift in aesthetic), we all entered our reputation eras. I attended the reputation stadium tour back in 2018, but this felt even more gripping than that, even though we only heard four songs off the album this time around. From the second we saw the snake on the screen, the audience was on their feet, energy renewed by the anticipation of what was to come.

And then we got another genre shift when Taylor went from her snakeskin getup to her literal princess ball gown, as she sang “Enchanted,” my favorite song ever. I got weepy (and I’m sure others did too) as she called back to her Speak Now album. Screaming “please don’t be in love with someone else / please don’t have somebody waiting on you” in a stadium full of Swifties is incredibly cathartic, and I highly recommend everyone do it at least once in their lives.

Then we came skipping and bounding into the Red era with “22.” She primarily sang singles from the RED era, which felt criminal considering the amount of underrated songs on that album (“Holy Ground”? “State of Grace”? “Message in a Bottle”?), but she made up for it with “All Too Well (10 Minute Version).” It’s funny because the song truly didn’t feel 10 minutes long — when everyone around you is as wholly into the moment as you are, the song speeds by and lasts forever. It’s a paradox, a dichotomy, but when you’re at the Eras Tour, that’s all to be expected.

She followed Red with folklore , decked out in the most beautiful, pixie-like green dress, singing hit after hit. Taylor may not admit if she had a favorite album, but my money’s on folklore , considering that she performed more songs off that album than any other. From the three teenage love triangle songs to a stunning rock-esque version of “illicit affairs” to a haunting rendition of “my tears ricochet,” she put her whole heart and soul into embodying everything folklore is.

And then she shifted gears again. This woman reinvents herself so often — has so many eras — that she can go from folklorian to 1989 pop princess in seconds. And pop princess she was. Reentering the stage to her hit “Style,” the 1989 era was bright colors and catchy ear worms and everything she wanted it to be (and we wanted it to be).

And then, the best part of the night — the best part of every night of the Eras Tour: the surprise songs. Every single show, Taylor performs two surprise songs, typically ones she hasn’t played before on tour, so every crowd gets something special, something that’s their own. And, no offense to any other city, but Detroit Night One won the surprise songs. “Haunted,” a track off her third album, was perfect on the acoustic guitar, with the crowd lit up in purple. Considering that there’s only one Speak Now song permanently on the setlist, getting a surprise song from that era felt like a particularly glorious moment. She followed this with the highly underrated song “I Almost Do” from the Red album. As mentioned earlier, many Red songs on the permanent set lists are singles, so getting to hear a song that usually flies under the radar as our second surprise felt like she was giving us a hidden gem.

After diving away from the surprising songs, we were thrust into Midnights . As her latest album, Midnights got its own moment in the tour, spanning seven songs and tons of iconic moments. With an entrance to the line “meet me at midnight,” Taylor ushered in the final era of the night with a bang. And when she ended the show with “Karma,” it felt like no time at all had passed, even though we’d been at the venue for hours by then. As she said her goodbyes, I was left wondering how that time could have passed as quickly as it had. Forty-four songs, three hours … gone, just like that.

I’ve heard people talking about this post-concert amnesia they’re experiencing, where the sheer joy they felt actually eclipses the ability to form or maintain memories of the night, but I don’t think that will happen to me. Whether it’s giving a friendship bracelet to the little girl dressed in a folklore costume or seeing Taylor sing “Enchanted” or experiencing a Taylor Nation notice live during the show (yes, that happened), I feel like all these memories are imprinted on me. Maybe it’s cheesy or dramatic to say that, but it also feels true. Taylor made this show, planned it carefully (like a “Mastermind,” if you will), with the intention that we would all go down memory lane with her as she reexperienced her highly expansive discography, and I’m so thrilled and privileged to have been a part of that. So, yes, I will be “ hold(ing) on to the memories ,” because I can’t imagine letting a single moment from this night slip away.

Things To Do

Entertainment | taylor swift immerses ford field in the many eras of her career.

young woman on stage

Early during her concert Friday night, June 9, at Detroit’s Ford Field – the first of two weekend sell-outs at the stadium – Taylor Swift remembered her first appearance there, as a 16-year-old singing the national anthem for a Detroit Lions game, in conjunction with the release of her self-titled debut album.

“It was, like, the biggest place I’d ever seen in my life,” she said.

And now Swift was back, for the fifth time as a concert headliner, with the biggest show of the year – and maybe anywhere, ever.

Swift’s Eras Tour is a phenomenon that broke the Internet when it went on sale last fall and sparked lawsuits against and congressional investigations into Ticketmaster over its inability to handle the enormous (an understatement) demand. But any controversy and Swiftie fan base angst were set aside on Friday, as the 52,269, including several Detroit Lions and Public Enemy rapper Flavor Flav, who was also at last week’s Detroit Grand Prix, got even more than they could have hoped from the 33-year-old pop phenom.

Eras is a show that redefines the idea of a pop concert, if that’s even the right term to use. The immersive and extravagantly staged affair that knits together aspects of Broadway musical, Cirque du Soleil spectacle and three-ring Barnum & Bailey entertainment, and the state of the art in visual technology. It’s an exposition that recaps Swift’s career, divided into 10 parts – nine dedicated to her individual studio albums (save for that debut) and one featuring a pair of “surprise” songs, which on Friday were a solo acoustic guitar rendition of “Haunted” from her 2010 “Speak Now” album, and “I Almost Do” from 2012’s “Red,” with Swift shifting to piano.

Those were the quietest moments during the 44-song, three-hour and 20-minute pageant. During the overwhelming majority of night the Swifties – decked out in homemade outfit, heavy on the glitter and sparkles and arms full of friendship bracelets (even the dads) – sang along, loudly, to every number as Swift, her seven-member band and 14-dancers delivered high-concept production pieces for each. As a demonstration of her creative range it was a genuinely awesome survey, bouncing (non-chronologically) from the pure pop of her “Fearless” and “Red” eras to the sophisticated ambience of her “folklore” and “evermore” albums and the contemporary dance flavor of last year’s “Midnights.”

singer on stage

It was also a testimony to the creative burst Swift had during the pandemic; she told the crowd at one point that music has been “a coping mechanism” for her since she was a youth, and that during the enforced time off she wrote as many songs as she could to exercise her imagination.

That turned into six albums in three years, including her “Taylor’s Version” re-recordings of three others. She thanked fans for supporting the latter, especially, noting that “this is sort of the definition of a passion project…’ I didn’t go in with any demands or expectations that you guys had to like my versions more or you had to support my versions more, right? But the coolest thing happened; I put out my very first re-record (‘Fearless’)…You guys, like, rolled up your sleeves and dove in head-first and you were like, ‘Nope, these are the versions we support’… Honestly, I’m gonna be thanking you for that for the rest of my life.”

And there’s no question that one of the highlights of the night for Swifties was the new, nearly 10-minute version of “All Too Well” that she created for “Red (Taylor’s Version).”

Taylor Made: Swift’s Eras tour plays Ford Field this weekend

The entire night, exhaustive and occasional exhausting, was one highlight after another. Just when you thought you’d seen the best, Swift delivered something else that left it in the memory banks, and you didn’t dare look away for fear of missing something crucial.

Among those that stuck, however, were: a musically strong performance of “The Last Great American Dynasty” with Swift singing while her dancers’ formal cotillion; parts of the “folklore” section that she sang on the roof of the “folklore cabin,” a creation “in my mind” that fueled that album’s song stories; a “Blank Spaces” that featured Swift on a center-stage riser with projections of herself underneath and dancers riding around on neon-wheeled bicycles and wielding neon golf clubs; dancers in lighted, rotating booths for “Look What You Made Me Do;” and a quick costume change amidst umbrella-toting dancers during “Midnight Rain.”

Swift roamed the stage – wide and long, jutting deep along the Ford Field floor – in a variety of outfits, from tight body suits to flowing ball gowns, while a nearly stadium-wide video screen displayed an array of live close-ups and prepared films. The risers in the middle section of the stage changed shapes and forms for the performances, while periodic pyrotechnics became a full fireworks display for the closing “Karma.”

performers on multi-level platform

Amidst all that, however, the longest ovation of the night came for “Champagne Problems,” which Swift sang solo at a “moss-covered” piano during the “evermore” section, after asking for a tissue to blow her nose, telling fans that she “was at the end of a cold."

Earlier, meanwhile, Swift explained that her “goal for the end of the evening is when you hear these songs after this show, you’re gonna be thinking about tonight and the time we all had together.” There were indeed myriad memories created Friday (and most likely on Saturday), and she gave the Swifties – including some Taylor-gaters on the sidewalk on Ford Field’s east side, peering through the windows -- plenty to think about until the next time they see her, which of course, can’t come too soon.

Taylor Swift in Detroit: Everything to know before you go to the shows

DETROIT (FOX 2) - One of the biggest pop stars of all time is in Detroit at Ford Field for a two-day extravaganza in Downtown that is going to bring thousands of people into the city.

Taylor has been breaking records and exciting fans with her Eras Tour, an epic celebration of her career and new music releases since the pandemic and this weekend, she arrives in Detroit.

Taylor's tour broke Ticketmaster's website , leading to a massive lawsuit . Now tickets are available in the secondary market for a massive markup.

If you're one of the lucky 65,000+ plus with tickets to either night, you're going to want to make sure you are prepared for this massive weekend.

The highly-anticipated tour kicked off on March 17 in Phoenix, Arizona with Swift performing 44 songs from 10 albums for over three hours and 15 minutes.

Nearly two months into the 52-show Eras Tour, the 12-time Grammy-winner has received rave reviews for the concert despite the length of the shows.

What day is Taylor Swift in Detroit?

Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour will be in Detroit on Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10.

Doors at Ford Field open at 4:30 p.m. on both nights with openers going on at 6:30 including Girl in Red, Owenn, and Gracie Abrams.

After the openers, Taylor will hit the stage for what's expected to be a 3 hour show each night.

Lawsuit filed by Taylor Swift fans taking on Ticketmaster monopoly

A Metro Detroit woman is one of the many fans of Taylor Swift joining in on a legal case against Ticketmaster.

Can you still buy tickets to Taylor Swift in Detroit?

Ford Field has listed both shows as complete sell-outs. But that doesn't mean you can't find some tickets somewhere - just know you're going to pay…a LOT for them.

Tickets START at $1,500 per seat on StubHub. That's for one seat. PLUS fees, in the top row of Ford Field.

Of course, you can find a better view for only $18,000.

So, in short, if you want to buy a ticket, prepare to take out a loan. Tickets may go down slightly on Friday and Saturday as the ticket-holders get antsy about selling their seats.

Where to park at Ford Field for Taylor Swift's concert?

We're not going to sugarcoat it. Parking is not going to be fun.

Both nights that Taylor's on the stage, the Detroit Tigers are in town next door at Comerica Park. That means upwards of 100,000 people could be downtown and there are far from that many spots available.

Parking at Ford Field would cost you $50 if you can get in. Otherwise, you can reserve a spot now at Ford Field's official reservation system ParkWhiz . But be ready to pay there too. A parking spot there is going to cost you up to $200 – JUST to park your car.

So it may be best to take a rideshare or park farther away and take the Q-Line

What music will Taylor Swift perform at The Eras tour?

Taylor will play 44 songs over her hours-long show broken down into ten acts.

The albums include

  • Red (Taylor's version)

What can you bring in to the Taylor Swift concert?

If you want to bring a bag, bring a small clear one. Small clutches are also allowed.

Don't bring a large bag, light-up clothing, noisemakers, professional camera equipment, GoPros, or any other weapons.

This is just a small glimpse of the full list, which is very long. You can see the entire list here.

Making beaded friendship bracelets referencing Taylor Swift lyrics, eras and jokes is popular among fans for the Eras Tour, and don't worry, fans in Detroit will be able to partake in the fun. The venue says they will permit friendship bracelets if they are being worn. There is no limit to the number of bracelets as long as they are worn.

Is there a waiting room for parents?

There is no waiting room for parents at Ford Field. Each person entering the venue must have a ticket to the show. Children under 17 must be accompanied by an adult over 21.

DETROIT, Michigan - Taylor Swift is a music and media cottage industry unto herself. Her autobiographical songwriting supplemented with easter eggs timed with record releases and her attention to social media have made her off-stage life an obsession for fans and clickbait for all sorts of media outlets. So much so that some outlets will cross state lines to ensure their readers get a glimpse of her star as it shoots by to another city, specifically Ford Field in Detroit, where Swift’s massive and massively successful Eras Tour stopped for two sold-out nights on June 9-10 before heading to Pittsburgh for shows on June 16-17.

Related: Taylor Swift in Detroit: Where to get cheapest tickets for last show in Michigan

Swift has experienced plenty of ups and downs (mostly ups) in her storied, record-setting career, with fans and randos judging all of her choices. Is she a good friend to other women? Is she only a vocal ally for marginalized groups when it conveniently fits in a record promotion cycle? Is she self-centered? What about that new guy?

#Taylorisblablah.

There is seemingly always plenty of Sturm and Drang swirling around the pop music and pop culture entity known as Taylor Swift, a chunk of it of her own making. But just like that big yellow star in the sky that keeps the Earth from hurling aimlessly through space, Swift’s gravitational pull is so strong that most of the noise fades into the background when she hits the road.

She hasn’t toured for five years, so millions of people are desperate to be in her orbit, and are dropping big wads of cash and traveling several hours just to be in the same gigantic room with her so they can “singshoutscreamcry” all of her songs right back to her.

And “singshoutscreamcry” they did on Friday night at Ford Field. Seemingly every person at the sold-out stadium knew most, if not all, the lyrics and definitely all the choruses to each of the 40+ songs Swift performed during a 3.5-hour musical marathon that took Swifties through her 17-year, 10-album career.

Eras is not simply a concert or a live music performance. There are elements of theater and big brassy Broadway shows in the 10 eras covered. Swift is backed by 14 dancers and four backup singers plus her band, including guitarist and Cleveland native Paul Sidoti.

It’s “Swift Du Soleil: Eras,” an audio and visual feast where the massive HD video screen isn’t just offering eye candy helping to tell the story of each song and its era. Actually, the fans in the crowd were players, too, and not just because of the constant screaming, crying, singing and vocal declarations of love.

Each ticket holder was given a plastic bracelet (thanks Capitol One!) that when activated by a pull tab up. The color and pulse were controlled by some agent of Swift and changed color and rhythmic pulse in conjunction with each era and often specific songs, adding even more detail to the rich visual end of the experience.

Swift didn’t take to a chronological path through her eras but most of her albums got at least three tunes save “Speak Now,” represented only by “Enchanted” and her self-titled debut, which was ignored.

Each era was represented by a color scheme and at least one quick wardrobe change and each era was linked to the next with thematic video and sound.

Some songs were truncated, but Swift gave her Swifties at least a verse and the hook-laden chorus to dig into before moving on to the next sing-a-long. Swift opened with a shortened version of “Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Priince,” then delivered “Cruel Summer” and “The Man” -- in a sparkly suit jacket, complete with similarly attired dancers.

After a shortened version of “You Need To Calm Down,” Swift addressed the crowd, reminiscing about her Ford Field debut singing the national anthem at a 2006 Lions game and how she was “freaking out” before detailing the Eras concert concept, which she described as a “grand adventure.”

“Fearless” brought an orange color and an intense sing-a-long to “You Belong With Me.” The second pandemic album, “Evermore,” took the audience to a forest scene featuring Swift in a long, flowing orange dress for a “Willow,” featuring the dancers manipulating softly glowing balls (very Swift DuSoleil) and an emotional “Marjorie.”

Before playing one of the many fan favorites, “Champagne Problems” Swift had to blow her nose (Oh my God, she has mucus just like a regular person!!!) and then talked of her writing process and how gratifying it was to have fans sing her songs back to her, “You guys are performing out there!” she said.

Two themes dominated her banter throughout the evening. First, a general appreciation for the many years of fan support throughout her public triumphs and foibles, and then reminding fans of her “passion project” (and smart business move for licensing and master recording ownership purposes) of rerecording and essentially replacing her first six studio albums.

The most recent of those albums to get the “Taylor’s Version” treatment is “Red” and that section of the show was unsurprisingly colored red. It was also one of the rowdiest, highlighting that album’s upbeat, bouncy tunes and Swift’s way with a hook, including “22″ and a huge sing-a-long for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” before taking it all down again with the fairly stripped arrangement of the heartbreak ballad, “All Too Well,” giving the fans another opportunity to really dig in and perform.

Her post-pandemic records -- the stripped-down “Evermore” and “Folklore” -- got quite a bit of attention. Swift performed seven songs from the “Folklore” album with a mossy, tranquil cabin setting evoking the album’s relatively soft, cozy sound.

Showing a good sense of pacing, “1989″ brought things back up again with “Blank Space” and a fun “Shake It Off.”

Throughout the tour Swift has played a two-song solo, unplugged set of “surprise songs,” songs she hasn’t played on the tour yet, presumably to add a dash of spontaneity to the otherwise fully choreographed show. Detroit got an acoustic guitar rendition of “Speak Now’s “Haunted” and “I Almost Do” from “Red,” which hasn’t been performed since 2013.

The show ended with seven songs from her latest “Midnights,” and the smoky, relaxed grooving album saw Swift and her dancers doing sexy burlesque chair dances and moves much to the delight of the fans.

Swift’s Eras Tour with all of its theatrical elements is a singular sensation and a rare show truly designed not just to fill a stadium with giant screens to make sure folks in the nosebleeds can see.

It fills the room with sights, sounds, and some tasteful pyro and dang it those lighted bracelets are a pretty cool idea, too.

The video screens and careful camera work allow Swift to still do the subtle winks, head nods and smiles that make her fans scream without needing to make every movement big and outsized.

Eras is an expertly designed, constructed show that is executed show by a performer in complete control with a strong vision of herself and her fans.

Taylor Swift is in her Red Era as Chiefs win Super Bowl in OT and she and Travis kiss on the field

Could there have been a more fairytale ending for Swifties watching the Super Bowl ?

From Taylor Swift 's amazing "87" necklace to biting her white nails during OT and the kiss on the field when the Chiefs won , it was the cap to the rom-com we've been watching all season.

Thanks for watching all 13 (13!) Chiefs games with us when Swift attended. You were with us from the hot summer night when Swift cheered for her boyfriend Travis Kelce the first time (when we still didn't know if we should call him her boyfriend!). All the way until now with that very sweet kiss on the field. We dismissed the people who called their relationship a PR stunt, and leaned into the romance.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Some of us already liked football (Austin Curtright, our sports reporter and Swiftie) and others (Bryan West, our fulltime Taylor Swift reporter) learned to appreciate the sport as we cheered for Taylor's boyfriend.

We only hope that Season 2 of this romance continues in Australia with the next leg of the Eras Tour - and with Travis Kelce as the male lead. (After they both get to celebrate and take a nap!)

The Taylor-Travis kiss we waited for

As the game ended, we watched, waiting for Taylor Swift to run to the field. We saw Patrick Mahomes' wife Brittany share the stage as the Vince Lombardi trophy was presented.

We listened as Travis Kelce sang "Viva Las Vegas."

And where was Taylor?

Were you anxious, too, as we waited for Kelce to find Swift on the field?

The kiss was the pay off.

'Come here, baby girl'

One of our favorite Instagrammers, Olivia Levin with Swifties for Eternity, caught this audio clip.

Travis Kelce first hugs his mom, and then finds Swift and says: "Come here, baby girl," and hugs Swift.

And we're dying. We'll see you in three business days, OK?

A dream week for Taylor and Travis

On Sunday,  Taylor Swift  won her 13th and 14th Grammys, made a historic win with her fourth album of the year award and broke the internet after announcing a brand-new album,  "The Tortured Poets Department."

A week later, she watched boyfriend Travis Kelce win his second Super Bowl in a row.

How fun was this?

"It's a love story" Taylor Swift congratulates Travis Kelce after Chiefs win Super Bowl

Hillary Clinton congratulates Taylor Swift's boyfriend

Nothing like Hillary Clinton jumping in with the Swifties and referring to Travis Kelce as simply: "Taylor Swift's boyfriend." That's a movement we can join!

Red (Taylor's version)

THE CHIEFS WIN SUPER BOWL 58 (25-19) over San Francisco!! Swifties are heard crying, screaming and throwing up (this phrase is a Taylor-Swift-ism if you’re new here). Red and gold confetti fell onto the field!

Listen up Chads and Brads and Dads

The biggest name in music and, arguably, one of the most visible people in NFL circles, was undoubtedly mentioned countless times in bars and living rooms around the country.

But when it comes to TV, the 34-year-old singer/songwriter was on all of 55 seconds (51 seconds before the game-winning touchdown) out of a broadcast that took about four hours and 18 minutes to complete. This is counting her sightings from kickoff until the game went final.

She was also on camera for various moments  before and after the game  as well.

- Gabe Zaldivar

A very Taylor celebration

Travis Kelce makes a clutch 22-yard reception to set up the Chiefs' game-tying field goal to send the Super Bowl to overtime tied at 19. Taylor Swift was shown in shock on the broadcast after the play.

A nervous nail-biter of a game

The CBS broadcast shows a nervous Taylor Swift as she watches the 49ers driving down the field late in the fourth quarter tied 16-16 against her Chiefs.

Paul McCartney joins Taylor Swift's suite

Sir Paul McCartney appeared in the Super Bowl suite to say hi to Taylor Swift. The two have been friends for years. In 2020,  Swift interviewed McCartney for a "Rolling Stone" series called "Musicians on musicians." The Time Magazine article mentioned that Swift has a framed note from McCartney that hangs in her New York apartment bathroom.

A touchdown and a Taylor Swift sighting!

Shown for the fifth time on the broadcast, Taylor Swift was hype for the Chiefs' touchdown to take a 13-10 lead late in the third quarter. And, of course, Kansas City takes the lead with 13 points, Swift's favorite number."

If you're counting, and we are, CBS showed Taylor for the third time in the third quarter

Taylor Swift makes her third appearance on the in-game CBS broadcast, this time as she dances and sings next to her friends inside Allegiant Stadium.

Let's hope for another shot before the fourth quarter.

Shaq, meet Taylor. Taylor, meet Shaq.

Shaquille O’Neal finally met Taylor! He shared a photo on instagram with Jamie Salter, the Chairman and CEO of Authentic Brands Group, who gifted her with the Judith Leiber bedazzled bag.

Lana Del Rey joins Taylor Swift in the suite

Swift's friend Lana Del Rey was spotted in the stands just below the suite during the first quarter of the game. The two collaborated on "Snow on the Beach" on Swift's Grammy-winning album. And the two sat next to each other at the Grammys a week ago. Swift even took her hand and brought her to the stage when she won.

This Sunday, Swift brought her with her again. By the second quarter, Del Rey was in the suite with Swift, Ice Spice and others.

Is there really a Taylor conspiracy?

There has been much discussion about a conspiracy with Taylor Swift and the Chiefs making the Super Bowl. But we don't think even Swift herself could create so many coincidences with 13.

It’s the Super Bowl of “13”s. It’s SB58 (5+8), held on Feb. 11 (2+11), where the Chiefs play the 49ers (4+9) and the halftime score continues the trend. San Francisco leads 10-3.

Is Taylor also playing Taylor Swift Bingo?

So the Jumbotron on Allegiant Stadium showed Taylor Swift chugging a beer, or was it a wine? That is savage. Maybe she saw herself on the Jumbotron and is playing the same drinking game we are? Drink when the cameras show Taylor?

Or is she giving her best Jason Kelce impersonation?

'Barbie's' Ryan Gosling joins in on Taylor Swift fun

Ryan Gosling has joined in on the Taylor Swift wave, as he was featured in a comical Super Bowl commercial crying to Swift's song "All Too Well" in a promotion for his new movie, "The Fall Guys."

Every photo of Taylor Swift at the Super Bowl

We are so lucky to have our USA TODAY photographers at the game - and bringing us some close ups of Taylor, so we can really discuss her fit - and her lipstick, and play our favorite game: How many people can you identify in the Super Bowl suite?

Usher and Taylor collab?

And they said sing now-ow… Taylor Swift has collaborated with many of the top music industry names and Usher is no exception. In 2011, the halftime show singer joined Swift during the “Speak Now” tour at the Philips Arena (now called the State Farm Arena).

It's a 'Love Story' we can get behind

Kansas City fans are “beggin’ you, ‘Please don’t go-o-o,’” before kickoff at Super Bowl LVIII Sunday. Hundreds of fans are heard belting “Love Story” in the Kansas City Power & Light District in Missouri.

Go Taylor's Boyfriend

Our favorite shirt either at the game - or at Super Bowl parties across the country might make Taylor the main character. And why not?

Are you googling how to get Taylor's red lip?

Just stop. We've got you.

The lip formula that Swift is rumored to wear is  Pat McGrath’s LiquiLUST Legendary Wear Lipstick in the shade "Elson 4"  lined  with Pat McGrath’s PermaGel Ultra Lip Pencil in “Structure” (mid-tone nude) .

“I’m sure you’ve seen footage of Taylor Swift dancing in the rain,” says Cincinnati Makeup artist Julie Niesen. “More than likely, she’s wearing a product like LiquiLUST that will endure dancing, and rain, kissing Travis Kelce.” The formula can last because it’s silicon-based, which is “very water proof” and requires an oil-based remover to take off, Niesen says.

Sad news though, Swifties. This exact makeup product has been sold out for months.

She recommends a handful of other formulas that offer slightly different shades at various price points. These recommendations include  Rouge Dior Forever in the shade 999 "Forever Dior”,   which is also available in the  liquid version , the  Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick in shade 01 “Always Red”  and  NYX’s Suede Matte Liquid Lipstick in the shade “Kitten Heels.”

Our favorite description of Travis Kelce

Nickelodean for the win. Did you know they stream the Super Bowl?

Taylor Swift and fellow Grammy nominee and friend Lana Del Rey share a moment

They sat next to each other at the Grammys last week and now they meet again.

The “Snow On The Beach” collaborator approached Taylor's box from the stadium seats in a red leather jacket and dark jeans. A photo shows the two holding hands for a second, before Lana Del Rey returned back to the “cheap seats.” Later on, in the game, Lana was seen in the box. Whew!

You can follow us on Instagram to see more Taylor moments, see the best moments from Usher's half-time show - and maybe even a few shots of the game.

Taylor isn't at the Puppy Bowl, yet she has a presence

Taylor didn’t make it to the Puppy Bowl , the ultimate sports event for those who consider puppies the MVP, but her doppelganger did. Cutting away from the action on the field, Taylor Sniffed and Travis Klawce were featured in the stands, enjoying the action.

Klawce wore his namesake’s trademark “87” jersey, while Sniffed donned a sparkly kerchief around her neck.

They’re not the only doppelgangers at the bowl. Patrick Mabones, a hound mix, played for team Fluff .

Taylor Swift sways to Post Malone's 'America the Beautiful'

Swift, with her arms around Blake Lively, swayed to Post Malone's acoustic version of "America the Beautiful."

And did you miss Reba's beautiful national anthem ?

Whose suite is Taylor Swift in?

We've confirmed that the suite is that of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Who made Taylor Swift's adorable "87" necklace?

Taylor Swift made a radiant statement at the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, rocking a custom diamond and yellow gold "87" pendant necklace from Stephanie Gottlieb Fine Jewelry , complementing her look with the Diamond Tennis Choker in rose gold. The "87" marks the launch of Stephanie Gottlieb’s new Varsity pendant, giving shoppers the opportunity to customize their own necklace with letters and/or numbers of their choosing, and characterized by the iconic varsity-letterman font. The necklace is $2,950.

Can I buy that '87' football-shaped purse?

If you have $4,495, yes! According to one of our favorite Swifties, Instagram account @TaylorSwiftStyled says it's a Judith Leiber bag, a favorite you usually see on red carpets.

What did Donna Kelce wear to the Super Bowl?

No one will mistake Donna Kelce for anyone else at this year's Super Bowl. Her custom jacket says, "Mama Kelce" on it.

What did Taylor Swift wear to the Super Bowl?

What we know: Taylor Swift arrived in a black corset style top and black jeans with rhinestone cutouts , $695 from AREA and similar to the AREA rhinestone embellished shorts she wore to an earlier game.

She also wore a gold "87" necklace. Her purse? An adorable football shaped purse with an "87" on it. Guess we know who she's rooting for!

Swift walked with a red bomber jacket slung over her left shoulder. The jacket is a Kansas City Chiefs WEAR by Erin Andrews. It’s red with two white lines along the collar, base and vest stitched area. Andrews, a FOX Sports reporter, sells fashionable fan gear for women. This is the second time that Swift has sported one of her jackets. On Oct. 12 when the Chiefs played the Broncos, she wore a similar outfit to her Super Bowl appearance.

Who is in Taylor Swift's Super Bowl suite?

We spied Taylor Swift with fellow Grammy nominee and "Karma" collaborator Ice Spice, producer RIOTUSA, along with Blake Lively, who attended an earlier Chiefs game with Swift, and close friend Ashley Avignone. Travis Kelce's close friend Aric Jones was there, too.

The Kelce family was there. She also is hosting Travis Kelce's mom, Donna Kelce! Donna Kelce had said earlier in the week that the suites were "pricey" so she figured she'd be in the stands, and be happy. We also spied Travis' dad, Ed Kelce, and, of course, Jason Kelce. We're wondering if he's going to keep his shirt on.

Jason Kelce's wife Kylie was in the suite, too. You have to love Kylie, who as a die-hard Eagles fan refused to wear Chiefs gear and instead wore a red long sleeve T-shirt repping the University of Cincinnati, where the Kelce brothers played football before going pro.

We also saw her Swift's mom, Andrea Swift, her dad, Scott Swift, brother Austin Swift, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Friends who celebrated her birthday last year were also there: Miles and Keleigh Teller.

Did you love Jason Kelce's overalls? We did!

Taylor Swift arrives at the stadium

More than two hours before kick off, CBS showed an image of Taylor Swift in a sleek black corset style top, red satin Chiefs jacket over her shoulder and her hair in a pony with a tiny braid, next to Ice Spice and Blake Lively at the stadium.

Who was Taylor Swift with as she arrived at the Super Bowl?

Taylor Swift walked into the stadium following her mother, Andrea Swift. She walked with Blake Lively, who has attended a Chiefs game with Swift, and she brought "Karma" collaborator Ice Spice, whom she was spotted with at the Grammys last week. Ashley Avignone, one of her close friends, was there, as was her dad, Scott Swift, and brother Austin Swift.

Blake Lively wore Adidas red track pants with a cropped white tank and a matching red jacket. Ice Spice was sleek in all black.

What did Travis Kelce wear for his gameday fit?

Tight end  Travis Kelce was "shimmering"  on his way to get on the Chiefs' team bus,  CBS analyst Nate Burleson gushed  on the network's pregame show.

Dressed in all-black as he left the hotel ("Reputation?), Kelce will  change into the Chiefs' home red jerseys  when he arrives at Allegiant Stadium.

Not to be outdone by his brother’s Amiri jacket and trousers, Jason Kelce showed up to Super Bowl LVIII in colorful Kansas City Chiefs overalls.

You can buy Jason Kelce’s overalls on pre-order and his bright red “big yeti” tee is available in multiple locations online.

The brothers have a knack for fashion, and Travis purchased designer jumpsuits for his teammates in the past, so neither Jason’s plaid overalls nor the shiny Amiri suit are out of character.

What were Taylor Swift's best looks during the NFL season?

Swift fans were treated to 12 game looks this season – from popping up in a box at Arrowhead Stadium in October in an Erin Andrews’ WEAR jacket to the AFC Championship game where Swift wore a bright red sweater and black mini.

She showcased vintage looks from Kansas City’s West Side Storey , a retro style jacket that was a replica of the one boyfriend Travis Kelce wore in December, and independent (and now NFL-licensed) designer Kristin Juszczyk . And she had us all seeing red!

Is Taylor's dad giving off Big Dad Energy?

We love what a big Chiefs fan Scott Swift has become.

This fit is peak dad!

Is Taylor Swift in Las Vegas yet?

We are waiting with you!

And NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on  NFL GameDay Morning that Taylor Swift has officially arrived in Las Vegas and is expected to attend Super Bowl LVIII to watch her boyfriend, Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers.

Gracie Hunt, daughter of Kansas City Chiefs CEO  Clark Hunt ,  told People  on Saturday that Swift will attend the big game.

"She's coming!" Hunt told People. "We're excited."

When is Taylor Swift's next concert?

Swift’s next Eras Tour concert is Friday, Feb. 16 in Melbourne, Australia. She performs three nights in Melbourne before heading to Sydney and then to Singapore on March 2.

Follow Bryan West, the USA TODAY Network's Taylor Swift reporter, on  Instagram ,  TikTok  and  X as @BryanWestTV who will report live from Melbourne.

It's a love story. Will Travis Kelce propose at the Super Bowl?

We’ve seen proposals at so many of the Eras Tour shows, that why wouldn’t Kelce propose to Swift if the Chiefs win?

It could be a very good end to what feels like a real-time rom-com for Swifties.

Kelce was actually asked this very question in one of many pre-Super Bowl Interviews. His answer, classic Kelce: "I'm focused on getting this ring, and that’s all that my mind’s focused on right now."

Is Taylor Swift in a Super Bowl commercial?

The most Taylor Swift of commercials doesn’t even feature the singer.

But you’ll feel like you saw her after watching Cetaphil’s early Super Bowl Commercial, which as of Friday had been viewed almost 3 million times.

The video shows a "real-life father and daughter living in New York" who are struggling to connect with each other.

The father, who is a football fan, has a difficult time figuring out how to interact with his teen, who only appears to be interested in her phone and skincare. The father approaches the daughter a couple of times over the course of the video, attempting to bond with little success.

The mere mention of  “the most famous fan of the game” and suddenly dad and daughter are together – and we’re crying.

Can you bet on Taylor Swift at the Super Bowl?

How many times will CBS's Super Bowl broadcast show her on-air? Will the Super Bowl MVP mention her in his speech?

Swift's relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been one of the hottest topics of this NFL season.. The 14-time Grammy winner has attended all three of the Chiefs' playoff games up to this point but has a concert in Tokyo the day before the Super Bowl. That's left fans speculating whether she'll make it to Las Vegas in time for the big game.

However, they won't be able to legally bet on such an appearance – or the number of them on the broadcast – at a United States-based sportsbook ahead of Sunday's game. Any such wagers are only available on betting sites outside those regulated in the U.S.

There are other prop bets not related to the outcome of the game that also aren't legal to bet on in the U.S. as well as some that are only available in certain states. But why is that?

“The general rule of thumb in the U.S. for creating prop bets is that they need to be determined by action on the field and the result shown in the box score," BetMGM Senior Trader Tristan Davis told USA TODAY. "This makes it difficult to offer prop bets on Taylor Swift since she doesn’t play the game.”

In other words, the name of the game in sports betting is wagering on the objective, on-field results, not the subjective decision-making of a TV broadcast director.

Can Taylor Swift make it to the Super Bowl?

The big joke on Tiktok this week has been the math question: If Taylor Swift leaves Japan - and the time difference is +17 hours to Las Vegas an the flight takes about 13 hours, will she make it on time?

Lucky for us, our amazing graphics team has done the math - and has shown their work .

Even the Embassy of Japan got in on this feat, as Swifties across the world suddenly have serious interest in air travel times.

“Despite the 12-hour flight and 17-hour time difference, the Embassy can confidently  Speak Now  to say that if she departs Tokyo in the evening after her concert, she should comfortably arrive in Las Vegas before the Super Bowl begins,” the embassy said on  Feb. 2 , peppering the statement with references to popular Swift song titles.

Has Taylor Swift played the Super Bowl half-time show?

No. Swift has never played at the half-time show, but she has performed at many big sporting events.

In 2022, the singer said she didn't want to perform until she finished rerecording all of her first six albums. She has two left: Reputation (Taylor's Version) and her debut album.

Her first time singing at a major sporting event was in 2002 when as an adorable 12-year-old, she sang the national anthem before a Philadelphia 76ers Detroit Pistons game.

She has since performed at several other sporting events, including when Swift sang the national anthem at game 3 at the 2008 World Series in Philadelphia.

How did Taylor and Travis meet?

We could write a song about this, but honestly, don’t we just want Taylor to do it?

Travis Kelce attended the second Kansas City show of  Swift's Eras Tour . The tight end hoped to give Swift a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it but was unsuccessful.

Kelce called Swift out on his podcast New Heights.

"I was disappointed that she doesn't talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings," Kelce said to his brother, Jason.

When word got to Swift, the singer reached out.

“This all started when Travis very adorably put me on blast on his podcast, which I thought was metal as hell,” she said in her Time magazine interview for 2023 Person of the Year. “We started hanging out right after that. So we actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for, because we got to get to know each other."

Though they had been dating for weeks, Kelce made the first public comment about their relationship on the  Pat McAfee Show  in September.

“I threw the ball in her court," he said, "and you know, I told her, you know, ‘I’ve seen you rock the stage in Arrowhead. You might have to come see me rock the stage in Arrowhead and see which one’s a little more lit.'"

This would set up the public launch of the duo's relationship.

Adele is Team "Taylor Swift's boyfriend"

Twitter/X user @picturetokurn joked the Super Bowl match-up is “Red” (49ers) versus “Red (Taylor’s Version)” (Chiefs), and Adele is team “Red (Taylor’s Version).” During her Las Vegas concert on Saturday, the singer said, “I think I want the Chiefs to win just because of Taylor Swift's boyfriend and all of you that are complaining about Taylor Swift being at games get a (bleeping) life.”

Boris Pasternak's museum house

Guided tour of Pasternak's museum housein Peredelkino village

Pasternak’s “important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition" was honored with a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. For many readers outside Russia, Pasternak is known mainly as the author of the touching historical novel Doctor Zhivago written in 1957. The novel as a whole communicates the haphazard, uncertain and chaotic quality of life caused by the Russian Revolution and the heroic case of quiet humanism demonstrated by a single person.

Pasternak’s translations of Georgian poets favored by Joseph Stalin probably saved his life during the purges of the 1930’s. However, the individualistic Pasternak was not suited to the Soviet artistic climate when art was required to have a clear socialism-inspired agenda and so Russian publishers were unwilling to print Pasternak’s novel. In fact, Doctor Zhivago first appeared in Italy in 1957.

Pasternak won his Nobel Prize the following year. Despite Pasternak politely declining his Nobel Prize quoting: “because of the significance given to this award in the society to which I belong”, the award nevertheless spread his fame well beyond Russia. He ended his life in virtual exile in an artist's community in Peredelkino village. His last poems are devoted to love, to freedom and to reconciliation with God.

Pasternak was rehabilitated posthumously in 1987. In 1988, after being banned for three decades, "Doctor Zhivago" was published in the USSR. In 1989 Pasternak's son accepted his father's Nobel medal in Stockholm.

Pastenak loved his house in Peredelkino, the house and surrounding nature featuring in his poetry. The poet considered the cycle of poems "Peredelkino", which he completed in the spring of 1941, to be his best work. The poet spent the first difficult months of the war in Peredelkino; he completed the novel "Doctor Zhivago" here, wrote the Lara poems and translated Shakespeare and Goethe. It was in this house that he learned he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on October 23rd 1958. He died here on May 30 1960.

The house in Peredelkino only acquired the status of a museum in 1990, thirty years after the poet's death and a century after his birth. The museum has fully preserved the environment and atmosphere of the house where Boris Pasternak lived and worked. The director of the museum is Elena Pasternak, grandaughter of Boris Pasternak.

Moscow after RS tour to St. Petersburg?

Doing the Rick Steves tour to Tallin, Finland and St. Petersburg in September. Thinking of going on to Moscow since we are relatively close. Would appreciate any input from someone who has gone on to Moscow. Transportation from St Petersburg, hotel, and maybe a private guide. Is three days enough to get a flavor and see the most important sights?

We were in Russia in September. St.Petersburg and Moscow on our own and then cruise on Volga from Moscow to Astrakhan. From St.Petersburg to Moscow we went by bullet train Sapsan. It makes it in 4 hours. All other trains in 8 to 10 hours. We reserved accommodation in St.Petersburg and Moscow through express to Russia (travel agency in S.P.)Here is their website: http://www.expresstorussia.com/ Through them we also had driver Vladimir who was waiting for us at Moscow railroad station and took us to our apartment. He had keys. Then after few days he took us to the cruise ship. If you don't speak Russian you will definitely need a guide in Moscow. Almost nobody speaks English and everything is written in cyrilic (street signs, in Metro, in museums etc.). Thank God I speak and read enough Russian to get around. Moscow is huge, sights are far apart and many. Moscow has enormous traffic jams. Metro is palace like, fast, efficient and cheap but you need to be able to read cyrilic alphabet. Metro stations are far apart, you will walk a lot. I wish we had more time in Moscow. We spent 5 days there and barely touched a surface. Because Moscow is so huge it takes a lot of time to walk to Metro and then to get to your destination. Sometimes you have to change trains, walk through long tunnels between different lines and then spend quite some time on escalators. Metro in Moscow is very deep. Despite all that Metro is usually fastest mode of transportation because of chronic traffic jams. Hotels and restaurants in Moscow are surprisingly expensive. There is the biggest McDonald in the world there and price there is similar as here. With the knowledge I have now I would give myself at least one week to ten days to see what I want.

I looked at the RS tour you are on and it only seems you have about 3 days in St. Pete. I would stay at least an extra day or two. I would try to learn some of the Cyrillic alphabet, its really not that hard, so you can make out some words in the metro etc. in Moscow. This tour company http://www.toursinrussia.com/ in Moscow has gotten good reviews and they have a ton of walking tours and day trips. Are you really into Russian history, etc.? If so you could do to stay longer than 3 days, if you are just wanting to see Red Square, etc. I guess 3 days would be ok. Don't forget about the Russian Museum in St. Pete the Hermitage is mostly Western European art. Check out inyourpocket.com website also for Moscow and St. pete.

Russia requires a visa, rules are a pain (we've just done this), requires an invitation from where you are staying. Find out how the visa for St. Petersburg is being done, it is probably through the tour, and for those days only. And if St. Petersburg is the last stop, will require you to leave that day. if so, this will likely require a new visa. Visa process can take over two months. You can look at the web site for "Travisa" to get some info, but you also need to know what is being done by the tour group.

"...requires an invitation from where you are staying...." Most Visa Service places will provide the invitation from a pre-arranged hotel in Russia. You're under no obligation to stay at the hotel the invitation originates from.

Based on your address you will be applying for russian visa at Russian Consulate in Seattle. Recently there were some changes in visa policy. You can read about visa process, guided Moscow tours and much more on the website of express to russia which I mentioned in my first answer. Russian visa policy is interestingly reciprocal. They are asking the same questions their citizens are asked in the application for US visa, we pay the same amount as they do, etc. I thought it was funny when I read that Australian citizens are required to have their application in Russian because Russian citizens were required to have their application for Australian visa in English. Processing of our visas took one week.

Ilja - I read a blog that described the Russian visa process as tit-for-tat. For example, they believe the US govt makes it difficult and expensive for Russians to visit the US so their process is designed to be reciprocal and equally annoying for US citizens who want to travel to to Russia. LOL - Sounds like they are not happy with Australia either.

I went on the RS St. Petersburg tour. I wish I had added a couple of days at the end of the tour to stay in St. Petersburg. I wish I had gone on to Moscow. Two of the tour members did go on to Moscow. One went by plane and the other by train. It seemed the train was less of a hassle.

I went through an agency to get my visa when i went to Moscow. It was a pretty easy and painless process; EXCEPT: Thee was one official form that i had to fill out. It was one of those Adobe PDF files that you can fill in on your computer and then print out for a signature. I filled it in, printed it, signed it and sent it to the agency. They called me a few days later and told me the form would not be acceptable to the Russians. It was required that the border be 3mm or some such exact number and unless you have yor print settings set a particular way you end up with 4mm on one side or somethng of the sort. I asked if she was serious and she said that's how serious the Russians were being. I set the printer accordingly, printed, signed and resent. I had the visa in about 10 days.
