About Sharon Shannon:

Sharon has recorded and toured with a who’s who of the Irish and Global Music Industry, including Bono, Adam Clayton, Sinead O’Connor, Jackson Browne, John Prine, Steve Earle, The RTE Concert Orchestra, The Chieftains, The Waterboys, Willie Nelson, Nigel Kennedy, Alison Krauss and Shane MacGowan – a list that is testament to Sharon’s versatility as well as talent.

While crossing–over into many genres of music, Sharon’s style is uniquely traditional Irish and she has been hugely influential in promoting Irish music, not only in her own country, but in the USA where she has collaborated with John Prine and Steve Earle/ Canada with Natalie Mc Master/ Japan with the Kodo Drummers/ Malawi with Umoza Children of Mzuzu.

Sharon came from a traditional music household based in the cultural hinterland of Co Clare- an area steeped in musical tradition. Sharon’s accordion style is uniquely based on the traditional fiddle playing of Tommy Peoples. All her musical life she has spent ‘bringing the traditional music of Ireland to the world’.

She has entertained US Presidents Clinton at the White House and Obama in Dublin, and Irish Presidents Robinson and MacAleese on presidential visits to Poland and Australia respectively. She recently accompanied Irish president Michael D. Higgins on his official tour of China. She has a personal relationship with the President and performed at his inauguration in Dublin Castle.

The genre-defying star has achieved multi-platinum album sales and has had several number chart topping albums, singles and DVDs in her home country. Her album Galway Girl went 4 times platinum in Ireland with the title track winning her the Meteor award two years running for the most downloaded song. She also celebrates being the youngest ever recipient of the Meteor Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 2015, Sharon received an IBAM Award in Chicago for her ‘unique contribution to Irish Music’ Other recipients were Darina Allen and actor Liam Neeson.

Sharon’s talents have even made their way into the world of film with her music featuring in several Hollywood movies and playing a cameo role in the Neil Jordan movie ‘Ondine’. She also worked on a stage production of JM Synge’s ‘The Playboy of the Western World,’ directed by Jim Sheridan.

A prolific composer, Sharon continues to defy genres and in 2012 released an album of original Irish music recorded with the RTE Concert Orchestra called Flying Circus. This is again a milestone, in that she is the first Irish artiste to have composed and recorded an album of original and newly composed Irish traditional music with a full Concert Orchestra.

This release was followed by an intimate, live collaboration with Alan Connor, In Galway, recorded at O’Connor’s pub. It wasn’t until her 2017 release, Sacred Earth, did we see Sharon’s truly eccentric genius in this varied collection of African and Reggae sounds, fused with traditional Irish music.

Sharon’s list of collaborators is as extensive as her musical repertoire. In 2013, Sharon co-wrote an album for the High Kings, she is also a frequent collaborator with legendary musician Donal Lunny and, in 2018, even released a collaborative album with Leinster and Ireland rugby star, Robbie Henshaw. The Secret Sessions was recorded alongside Henshaw and his family and was released in aid of South Westmeath Hospice.

Sharon regularly performs on tour and at festivals in Ireland, UK, France, Belgium, Holland, Spain, China, Australia, New Zealand and North America. In the latter half of 2019, Sharon toured extensively across Japan, Europe and the UK.

During the lockdown period, Sharon achieved viral status when she received a Facebook Challenge from Robbie Henshaw to learn a new skill. After five days of intense practice, the viral ‘Jolly Roger’ Facebook video was born. Sharon subsequently recorded The Jolly Roger as part of an album The Reckoning which as released in November 2020.The Reckoning is an amalgamation of cultures and musical influences to create one of Sharon’s most unique and original albums to date.

Sharon is a passionate animal lover and does a lot of voluntary work and fundraising for various animal rescues and is a patron of Madra (Mutts Anonymous Dog Rescue and Adoption) based in Co Galway.

Sharon supports many other charities and is an ambassador for Missionvale Ireland which provides support to relieve poverty and provide education Missionvale township in south Africa. Sharon released the album, A Thing Called Love: Songs For Leo, in aid of Galway charity Rosabel’s Room, of which Sharon is an ambassador.

In recent times, Sharon has expanded her work beyond her music, recording and uploading Podcasts regularly to her Patreon page to offer fans a deeper understanding of her music. In conjunction with the NUIG Music Department, Sharon recorded a masterclass series which is used as part of the NUIG Music Degree. These will be made available online with new lessons uploaded on an ongoing basis.

Sharon released a a double live album in July 2021. Recorded in February 2020 and featuring longtime sidemen Jim Murray and Jack Maher on acoustic guitars and vocals, Live at De Barras showcases the talent and power of the Sharon Shannon Trio

Sharon Shannon is an Irish Musician who has been on the scene for over twenty years. She takes to the stage with this full string orchestra in full swing with her buttoned accordion. She sits down with a smile on her face and looks so relaxed as they launch into a jig with such a major key vibe about it. You can’t help but smile when she performs. She has such a glow about herself on stage. She has worked with some of the biggest musicians in the world today such as U2’s Adam Clayton, Mike Scott and Steve Wickham. She was in fact in a band called The Waterboys for eighteen months building up her CV touring around the globe with them. Tonight she performs works from throughout her career but there is a special homage to her album “The Diamond Mountain Sessions” which included vocals from so many artists, and consequently went triple platinum. Some of the highlights this evening are “The Galway Girl” and “Blackbird”.

At The Barrier

Live music, reviews and opinion / est. 2018, sharon shannon trio – norton’s, digbeth: live review.

Sharon Shannon Trio – Norton’s, Digbeth – 17th February 2023

Can it really be 30 years since I first clapped eyes on this consummate mistress of the box, and the glee she displays in delighting audiences. Ongoing; given, shared and reflected back by a heaving audience of the faithful.

sharon shannon uk tour

Norton’s is new to me, at least as a venue, and on this evidence, it is an absolute corker, and one to which I will certainly be back. “ Not just another Irish pub ” is their byline, along with the tag, much in evidence, “ Slainte bab “, an affectionate homage to the Brummie Irish population, a mash-up of the Gaelic with the local tongue, as the Irish and their forbears still pack a sizeable punch in, especially, this part of the city. Like many, I first came across it courtesy the carving up of the High Street here, pending the extension of the tramlines. Forced into a detour up Meriden Street, making my way to the O2 Institute, it looked an inviting pint. And it was/is, the proprietor proudly showing off his concert room and flogging me tickets to this very gig.

Six months on business looks good, a fair old line stretching out the side door, the adjacent bar packed. A multi-generational crowd, with some family groups, all demonstrating the appeal Shannon has across both the staunchly traditional camp and the neo-trad fusioneers. With perhaps my only grouch being that it was all seating, line upon line of rickety chairs laid out in front the stage, nonetheless the atmosphere was high and heady and the anticipation was palpable. Timed to arrive at 8pm, she did just that, along with the current members of her trio, Jim Murray and Jack Maher. I say current, as both are long-term accompanists of hers, and it is they who are with her on her live double, Live At De Barras, recorded in 2020 and released the year after. (And that mightn’t be a bad place to start, should this piece tickle your interest.)

“ We’re going to play some jigs ,” she said, with a massive grin, and that’s exactly what she did, squeezing off with Neckbelly, immediately showing quite how fast her right hand and fingers can be, tumbling over the buttons. With Merry Go Round, the hint of a bluebeat rhythm a recurring feature of her playing. Murray was already showing off a ridiculous grasp of his guitar, his blur of surely eight fingers on each hand producing a flurry of chords, far from those automatically deemed necessary. Those deemed necessary were coming from Maher, who was the more received rhythmic metronome, the pair the perfect bedding for Shannon’s sparkling bombardment of the melody lines. Dedicating the next one, a more lilt of a tune to her Mammy Shannon, Mammy’s Jig, had the audience blinking into their porter.

Maher sings too, coming first to the fore for Man Of Constant Sorrow, the old staple that found renewed life from George Clooney’s ‘O Brother, Where Are Thou’, with the Soggy Bottom Boys kicking this 19222 song back to life. Shannon made Maher’s job that much easier by stating how it has been Jackson Browne who had sung it on her own studio rendition thereof. No pressure, then. And none taken, his agreeable baritone a perfect instrument. The more continental swing of Coridinia follows, ahead of further hooleys that begged for the absence of chairs. One of these had included, it seemed, an instrumental version of Moondance, “ which you wouldn’t have recognised “, after she had played it. Whether a criticism or merely observation, I confess she wasn’t wrong.

Duo In G now gave a showcase for her band to shine, a classically based piece, with Maher now on mandolin. As astonishing to watch the fingers employed in the delivery, this was stunningly effective, Shannon herself only coming in for the second half. Another conjoined romp of jigs, or rather, polkas and it was time for a breather. And a decent pint of an ale I was hitherto unfamiliar, Galway hooker.

sharon shannon uk tour

The second half demonstrated I wasn’t alone in discovering the bar, it all getting a tad noisy as the trio launched into the second half, causing a brief flicker of concern to cross Shannon’s otherwise ceaseless beam. Reading the room perfectly, she quelled the backchat with a pin-drop rendition of Indigo, paired with Beatrice, which took up the reins again for a lively gallop, this time without the unnecessary noise. Maher pitched in with another song, Smile, I think, a glorious downbeat song of wry optimism.

Jigatha Christie is a great name, by any standard, and is one of her more nostalgic and wistful tunes, the feel becoming apparent that we were beginning to coast into the home straight. Blackbird, surely one of her best known tunes, cemented that feel, ahead the you can all join in of Courtin’, which had the hall joining in on the chorus, if needing little in the way of any prompt to do so. With Murray inviting the audience to clap, you can imagine it, I’m sure. All too soon and she was announcing the closer, this time, to balance the earlier tribute to he Ma, with Daddy Shannon’s Jig, segued into my personal nemesis, Penguin Cafe’s Orchestra’s wretched Music For A Found Harmonium. I know, I know, my problem, my bad, but I wish they’d all stopped looking for the bloody instrument. Shannon, Murray and Maher played it impeccably, of course.

sharon shannon uk tour

Traditional crowds demand a traditional encore experience, and how might Ms Shannon appease this most traditional of audiences? Can you think of anything in her repertoire that might seem fit? And yes, clearly she does and did, with a rousing version of Galway Girl, with everyone bellowing along the Steve Earle parts with much gusto and little restraint (and certainly not a thought of any other song by a similar name). As that eased into a gentler Phil Cunningham air, we all knew that was it, and tottered off into our respective journeys, enriched and engaged by yet another demonstration of how and why live music trumps all experience. No fiddle tonight, from the bandleader, but she did unbox her whistle at one stage, for one of sets in the first half.

Thank you, Sharon, and Slainte, Bab.

Here’s one I found earlier, the same trio, live in Clonakilty, from the live album mentioned above, with Coridineo

"Well, what sort of music do you like, Seuras?" Ever since that question was first aired by his mother a decade or six back he has struggled with the answer. And struggles still now. Call him a folkie, a country dude, a bluesman and he'll be happy, but don't forget the whiff of jazz, electronica and more. Not so keen on the charts, mind. View all posts by Seuras Og
