There's an all-new, super secure look for Safari 15 on macOS
First announced at WWDC 2021
The new version of Apple 's web browser is now here for macOS running Catalina and Big Sur with the official release of Safari 15.
In testing since its unveiling at WWDC 2021 in June, Safari 15 has seen major changes this year, with design updates being rolled back and giving users the option to switch between the older or newer user interface.
While this version will start shipping with macOS 12 Monterey once a release date is confirmed, users running Catalina and later can update to Safari 15 and benefit from improved security features alongside the updated design.

Safari 15 improvements
What’s immediately apparent is the new design that Safari 15 features, with tabs sitting beside the address bar, alongside the entire window adapting to the current web page’s color scheme, so you may see it turn entirely blue or red from time to time.
However you can revert to the previous design by going to Preferences > Tabs > Separate Layout, alongside making sure that the window doesn’t change color by unchecking ‘Show Color in tab bar’.
Under the hood, Safari 15 can switch to a HTTPS connection automatically when browsing, alongside better tracking protection, and a bunch of security updates .
You can update to Safari 15 by going to Software Update > Check for Updates and the new version will be available to download.

Apple releases Safari 15 for macOS Big Sur and Catalina with Tab Groups, new design, and more
Earlier today, Apple released iOS 15 , iPadOS 15 , watchOS 8 , and tvOS 15 to the public. We’re still waiting for the other big update, though. macOS 12 Monterey is still waiting in the wings, which will bring with it plenty of new features to the desktop OS. But today, Apple’s dangling a carrot for all of us waiting for that new software.
Today, Apple released Safari 15.0 to the public — for those running macOS 11 Big Sur and macOS Catalina . With this new software update, Apple is bringing the majority of new features to Safari it introduced alongside macOS Monterey (and iOS 15/iPadOS 15), without having to bring macOS Monterey to the fore quite yet.
As far as what’s new, Safari itself has a new design. This should make it easier to get around, to navigate from one website to another. There are new tabs, too. Including brand new Tab Groups, making them easy to access across devices, and organize tabs more easily.
Here is the official changelog for Safari 15.0:
Safari Safari 15 delivers faster performance, improved security, and the following new features: • Tab Groups help you save and organize your tabs and easily access them across devices • Redesigned tabs have a rounder and more defined appearance and take on the color of the webpage • Compact tab bar option shows more of your web page on screen • HTTPS upgrade automatically switches sites from HTTP to more secure HTTPS when available For detailed information on the security content of this update, please visit: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201222 .
To update to Safari 15.0, simply open System Preferences on your eligible Mac and then choose Software Update and follow the onscreen instructions. Safari 15.0 is a free upgrade to the web browser.
Apple releases Safari 15.1 with classic tab design for macOS Big Sur and Catalina
Earlier this week, Apple reverted the design of the Safari tabs to a more traditional look with the official release of macOS Monterey. Now the company is making this update also available to Mac users running macOS Big Sur and Catalina with Safari 15.1.
Safari 15 has undergone multiple changes since its announcement in June at WWDC 2021, as several users disliked the new design that unifies the tab bar with the address bar. Apple later added an option to separate the tabs from the address bar, but this alternative layout was still considered bad compared to previous versions of Safari.
The company then decided to completely revert Safari to the class ic tab design for users who opt for the “Separate” option in the web browser settings. The new unified layout is still available and comes enabled by default.
A few days ago, Apple released a beta version of Safari 15.1 with the classic tab design as a standalone update for users running macOS Big Sur and Catalina. Now the update is officially available for users who have not yet upgraded to macOS Monterey.
To install the latest version of Safari on your Mac, open the System Preferences app and click on the Software Update option. The option to revert Safari to the old design can be found in the Tabs menu within the app’s preferences.

Download: Safari 15.6.1 for Catalina and Big Sur Released
Apple has just released Safari 15.6.1 for macOS Catalina and macOS Big Sur with important fixes.
You Can Now Download Safari 15.6.1 Update with Extremely Important Security Fixes if You’re Using macOS Catalina or Big Sur
If you refuse to update to macOS Monterey, or your Mac simply does not support the latest version of Apple’s desktop operating system, there’s an important Safari update waiting for you.
Related Story Musician Turns An iPhone Ringtone In A Complete Song That You Will Listen To On Repeat
Bumped to version 15.6.1, this new update to Safari is available for both macOS Catalina and macOS Big Sur users. While this update does not add anything new to the web browser, it is an extremely important release since it introduces security fixes for a WebKit vulnerability.
According to Apple :
Available for: macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina. Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited. Description: An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking.
If that completely phased you out, then let me put it in simple words - just update to Safari 15.6.1 in order to keep your online activity safe at all times. Staying on the latest version of any software at all is always a great idea.
In order to download the new update, all you have to do is go to System Preferences > Software Update . Just wait for the page to refresh, and the new update will show up in a bit. Install it whenever it shows up.
If you’ve set your Mac to automatically download and install updates, then the update should install within a day or two on its own. But of course, since Safari 15.6.1 is an extremely updated release, therefore it is a good idea to download and install it manually as quickly as possible.

Apple has released Safari 15.6.1 with an important security fix for Macs running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.
The Safari update includes the same security fixes that are available in macOS Monterey 12.5.1 update for Mac users running Monterey, and iOS 15.6.1 and iPadOS 15.6.1 for iPhone and iPad. The latest macOS Ventura beta also apparently includes the same security fix.
The security update is recommended for all Mac users running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.
How to Get Safari 15.6.1 on MacOS Big Sur & Catalina
- Quit out of Safari
- From the Apple menu go to “System Preferences”
- Choose “Software Update”

Apple releases Safari 15.1 for macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina
What you need to know
- Apple has released Safari 15.1 for users of macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina..
- The update brings back the old Safari tab design.
- Mac users on macOS Monterey 12.0.1 already have the latest version of the browser.
Apple has officially released Safari 15.1 to Mac users running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.
The latest update, which brings some usual bug fixes and performance improvements to the browser, also brings back a much-requested feature that was missing with Safari 15: old-school browser tabs!
When Apple originally released Safari 15 to macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina users, everyone was both cautious and optimistic about its new tab redesign. Over the course of the developer and public beta periods, the company listened to a lot of customer feedback and implemented some notable changes to make the experience better.
While the general consensus agreed that the new Compact design could be beneficial to some users, many users complained that the old tab design was more user-friendly. Users were not happy that Apple took the option away to use a more traditional version of tabs in the latest version of Safari.
Thankfully, with Safari 15.1, Apple has brought back its traditional tab design for those who want to use it. Now, users can change between the Compact design and the Separate tab design when using tabs in the latest version of Safari.
If you've been wanting the old tab design as an option but are still running Safari 15 on macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina, now is the time to update! Users running macOS Monterey 12.0.1 already have the Separate tab design as an option.

Apple releases Safari 15.1 for macOS Big Sur and Catalina with traditional tab design
Available now for macOS Big Sur and Catalina , Safari 15.1 reverses UI design decisions introduced at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June and later rolled out to developers with initial macOS Monterey beta releases this summer. More specifically, the divisive "Compact" view that was previously set as Safari's default has been reverted to a more traditional "Separate" tab bar arrangement.
Apple attempted to rethink conventional web browser design by implementing a format that brought the tab bar in line with Safari's URL bar, browser navigation controls and bookmarks bar. Tabs were delineated as individual buttons separated by small spaces, while a color tab bar option matched Safari's base color with prominent hues displayed on an active website.
Dubbed "Compact" view, the redesign was not well received, with developers and public beta testers complaining that the changes were confusing and added little to the user experience.
Responding to the feedback, Apple began to roll back some of the more conspicuous modifications in recent beta releases. The company ultimately backed down and last week reinstated macOS Big Sur's tabs view — rebranded as "Separate" — as the browser's default. Safari's color-changing tab bar feature was permanently reassigned to the "Compact" view, which is now available as an option in the app's settings menu.
Safari 15.1 for macOS Big Sur and Catalina arrives two days after the same browser launched with macOS Monterey .
Great. The compact tabs were a menace.
Thank heavens. Did they not receive a mountain of negative feedback from developers and AppleSeed testers over the summer? I guess Apple needed a very clear reminder from the public that the Mac is not an iPhone. How did that even get past UX testing and into a final release? Someone had to be pushing very hard for its inclusion.

Apple Safari 15.1 Browser Update Released for Users on macOS Big Sur, macOS Catalina
Safari 15.1 includes security fixes for four vulnerabilities reported by security researchers..
Safari 15.1 lets users switch to the new compact tab bar design manually
- Apple has released Safari 15.1 as an update to Safari 15
- The new Safari release brings back the earlier tab bar design
- Safari 15.1 is available pre-installed on macOS Monterey 12.0.1
Apple has released Safari 15.1 as an update to the Safari 15 release that came with macOS Monterey. The new version allows users on macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina to experience the features that are available on macOS Monterey through Safari 15. It also reintroduces the earlier tab bar design that was available prior to the Safari 15 release. Users can, however, manually switch to the new compact tab bar design. Safari 15.1 also includes security fixes to patch certain known loopholes and vulnerabilities.
Unlike Safari 15, the Safari 15.1 release by default comes with the existing tab bar design where you will see tabs below the address bar. You can however manually switch to the compact tab bar design by going to Preferences > Tabs from the Safari menu.
Safari 15.1 by default comes with the previous tab bar design
The new compact tab bar was originally aimed at providing more room for Web browsing by combining active tabs with the address bar. It also allowed tabs to take the colour of the site you are visiting. However, the interface did not please many macOS users. Apple has, therefore, gone back to the earlier tab bar design for Safari 15.1.
- iOS 15.1, iPadOS 15.1 With SharePlay Support Released for iPhone, iPad Users
In addition to the interface-level changes, Safari 15.1 brings security fixes for four vulnerabilities reported by security researchers. These vulnerabilities exist in WebKit and are listed as CVE-2021-30887, CVE-2021-30888, CVE-2021-30889, and CVE-2021-30890, as detailed on the Apple Support page.

Now, uncheck the “ Shared with You ” option, and that’s it.

Bold new experience. Same Mac magic.
Unparalleled power. Legendary ease of use. Limitless creativity. macOS Big Sur brings a refined new design that gives you even more of the things you love about Mac.

Streamlined apps
From full-height sidebars to refreshed toolbars, a clean new app design makes sure your content is always front and center.
Refreshed Dock
A sleek design update makes getting to your favorite apps even easier. And a new uniform shape for app icons adds consistency while letting the personality of Mac shine through.
Control Center for Mac
Instantly access the controls you use most — like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth — and new controls to play music and enable Dark Mode for your display. Designed just for Mac, the new Control Center lets you add controls and drag favorites to the menu bar to customize it just for you.
Notification Center
A new design combines notifications and widgets in a single view for more information at a glance. Notifications are now grouped by app, and many are interactive — letting you do things like play new podcast episodes or learn more about Calendar invitations. And redesigned widgets come in three different sizes, so you can create the best view for you.
The all-new Safari. It’s love at first site.
Whether you’re streaming, searching, or just browsing, Safari is the best way to surf the web on all your Apple devices. And its biggest update ever brings intuitive customization options, improves on industry-leading performance and battery life, and introduces powerful new features designed to protect your privacy.
Customizable start page
Set a custom background image to start every browsing session with a view that’s all your own. And decide what appears on your start page — such as your Reading List, Favorites, iCloud Tabs, Siri Suggestions, and even a new Privacy Report
Safari extensions in the App Store
A new dedicated category in the App Store makes it easy to discover extensions from your favorite developers. New support for the WebExtensions API and migration tools allows developers to bring extensions from other browsers to Safari. And unlike other browsers, Safari asks you which websites each extension can access — keeping your browsing habits even more private.
Improved tab design
Tab lovers rejoice: An elegant new look means more tabs are visible at once. You can hover over any tab to bring up an instant page preview. And when you have several tabs open, Safari makes it easy to find the one you’re looking for with a new space-efficient design.
Beta Translation
Translate entire web pages between seven languages with a single click. 1
Password monitoring
Safari lets you know of any saved passwords that have been compromised in a data breach — and helps you upgrade them.
Safari automatically keeps an eye out for any saved passwords that may have been involved in a data breach. Using advanced cryptographic techniques, Safari periodically checks a derivation of your passwords against an updated list of compromised credentials. If a breach is discovered, Safari helps you upgrade your existing passwords. All this is done without revealing your password information to anyone — including Apple.
Privacy Report
Safari uses Intelligent Tracking Prevention to identify trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Click the Privacy Report button in your Safari toolbar for an instant snapshot of the cross-site trackers Safari is actively preventing from profiling you on that web page. And a new weekly Privacy Report on your start page shows how Safari protects your browsing across all the websites you visit.
The Privacy Report makes it easy to understand how the websites you visit treat your privacy. See the total number of trackers that have tried to profile you, the percentage of websites containing trackers, and the most common tracker. There’s even a list of top trackers, and another list of the websites that use them.
Increased performance
We made the fastest desktop browser on the planet even faster.
Improved power efficiency
Safari lets you do more online on a single charge than any other browser.
Up to 1.5 hours more streaming videos compared with Chrome and Firefox 3
Up to 1 hour more browsing compared with Chrome and Firefox 3
Messages on Mac. The ultimate conversation starter.
Keep track of groups. Express yourself instantly. Drill down into the details. The updated Messages app for Mac gives you all the tools you need to stay in control of the conversation.
Pin conversations
Pin any conversation to keep it at the top of your conversation list. Tapbacks, typing indicators, and recent messages animate above pins. And for quick access to your important conversations, your pins sync across your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Inline replies
Reply directly to specific messages in any conversation. Messages automatically starts a new thread under the original reply, so if someone asks a question in a group conversation, it’s easy to keep track of all the replies.
Group photos
Every group is different. Make yours stand out at a glance by setting an image with a photo, Memoji, or emoji.
Type a name to direct a message to someone. When you are mentioned, your name is highlighted. You can even customize an active group so you only receive notifications when you are mentioned.
Discover trending images and GIFs — and instantly add them to any message.
Go ahead — express yourselves. Now you can create and edit Memoji right on your Mac, and instantly share them in messages with Memoji stickers.
Message effects
Because sometimes, words just aren’t enough.
Message effects come to Mac. Choose from effects that take up the entire screen — like balloons, confetti, or lasers — or effects that change how individual message bubbles animate. You can even send a message with invisible ink that stays blurred until you swipe over it with your cursor.
Find it, whatever it is, faster. Search now organizes your results into links and photos and highlights matching terms.
Redesigned Maps. Better ways to find your way.
Updated to make the most of your big display, Maps on Mac makes trip planning fast and easy. Powerful new features let you easily research destinations in advance. And new ways to navigate take the guesswork out of getting there.
Discover new places to eat, shop, and explore with curated Guides from brands you love. Create Guides for your own favorite places and share them with friends and family. 4
Privacy information on the App Store. More transparency in every download.
New privacy information on the App Store lets you see a summary of the privacy practices of each app before you decide to download it — just like nutrition labels help you understand what’s in food before you buy it. Developers self-report how they use your data, including what data they collect and whether that data is used to track you across other apps and websites.
And even more.
Editing in photos.
Create standout photos with expanded editing capabilities, including an improved Retouch tool powered by machine learning. 5
AirPods automatic device switching
AirPods automatically switch between your active devices paired to the same iCloud account — making it even easier to use them with your Apple devices. 6
HomeKit Secure Video notifications
Cameras that support HomeKit Secure Video can now take advantage of Face Recognition and Activity Zones, allowing you to tailor notifications to specific people or specific areas in your camera’s view. 7
Listen Now is the new home for Apple Music, 8 featuring new releases, artist interviews, and playlists personalized for you — all in one place.
Faster updates
Once macOS Big Sur is installed, software updates begin in the background and finish faster than before — so it’s easier than ever to keep your Mac up to date and secure.

Apple Releases New Big Sur and Catalina Safari 15.1 Betas for Developers With Restored Tab Design
Following in the footsteps of the macOS Monterey release candidate seeded earlier this week, Apple has released a fourth beta version of Safari 15.1 for macOS Big Sur and Catalina to developers that restores the previous tab design that was in place prior to Safari 15.
As with Safari in the macOS Monterey release candidate, the new Safari 15.1 beta also scales back on the option to have the Safari window chrome blend in with websites , moving the option to the Accessibility section of the Advanced page in Safari preferences and limiting it to only the Compact Tab Bar design.
With the public release of Safari 15.1 in macOS Monterey, Big Sur, and Catalina, Apple is scaling back on many of the design changes made in Safari 15, which was released for those macOS versions last month alongside iOS and iPadOS 15. Many users were unhappy with those design changes, so Apple will now be offering them as an option rather than the default or only layout.
Registered developers can download the new Safari 15.1 beta by logging in to Apple's developer downloads portal and then navigating to the More Downloads section. The latest version of macOS Big Sur or macOS Catalina is required to install the beta.

I was SO GLAD they brought back the current design. I do UX myself (part-time job let's say) and I don't know what they were thinking. I was this close to switch to another browser. ??
I don’t know why I’m on MacRumors responding to this, but here we go: Steve Jobs developed NeXT. Steve Jobs died in 2011. Apple had to license various things for Safari, because Steve Jobs died. https://www.chromium.org/ If you think you can fix it, go write the fix and sell it to Apple.
