  • Information

Karnataka, as the tagline says ‘One state Many Worlds’ is a perfect destination for every traveller. The remarkable heritage and history of the state attract history lovers, travellers, students, and all those who admire the magnificent architecture of the times. The Northern Karnataka sector has always been very special in terms of tourism because of the presence of UNESCO Heritage sites. Badami – Aihole- Pattadakal – Hampi is on a must-to-do list for every tourist visiting Karnataka.

Located in the heart of Vijayanagara District, which once was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi was its capital. Vijayanagara was part of Deccan (now Hyderabad) and dominated all of Southern India and was probably the strongest empire in the Indian subcontinent. Vijayanagara Empire is considered to have been a golden age of culture and learning.

A 4 days itinerary can be planned to keep in mind the distance travelled from Bangalore. One day each at Aihole- Pattadakal, Hampi, and Badami is enough. But if you wish to study the heritage sites deeper, you can choose to stay a little longer.

Day 1 – Hampi

Elephant Stables Hampi

Hampi Elephant Stable

The iconic Chariot, the image of which can be seen on a 50 rupee note in Indian Currency, needs no introduction. A vast area of ruins, a live temple, a Lotus temple, and many more heritage sites in the compound makes Hampi the most visited monument in Karnataka. The glorious capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage site. A must-do destination, Hampi is famous for its historic significance, heritage, temples, ruins, and exquisite craftsmanship. The major attractions at Hampi include Virupaksha Temple, Ugranarsimha Vigraha, Lotus Palace, Hampi Bazaar, Vittala Temple, and much more. The 7th century Virupaksha Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva with gigantic Gopuram is the highlight of Hampi. The temple is still active and the pilgrims offer prayers to their deity. The other attractions include Sasive Kalu Ganesha, Kadale Kalu Ganesha, Anegundi, Vijaya Vittala Temple, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee Zoological Park.

Spend some time at Hampi to understand and study the ruins of Hampi and its glorious historical past.

Day 2 – Aihole

vastu chitra aihole

Vastuchitra Aihole

The next nearest destination to be planned can be Aihole. Just 140 km away from Hampi, Aihole takes about 2 and a half hours to reach by road. A cluster of around 120 temples from the 4th century AD, Aihole is a historic site along the Malaprabha river valley in Northern Karnataka. Aihole is a delight to visit for those interested in history, archaeology, architecture, heritage, and ancient temples. The most popular and the face of Aihole is the Durga Temple. A cluster of temples mainly comprises Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist temples. The Durga temple complex also has an art gallery and an archaeological Museum which should not be missed. There is a collection of exquisite antiques excavated from the region. Contrary to its name, Lad Khan Temple showcases the iconography from Shaiva, Vaishnava, and Shakti or Durga traditions of Hinduism. Also known as the ‘cradle of Indian Rock Architecture’, Aihole was the first capital of Chalukyas, who ruled the north Karnataka region. The temples are now being conserved and protected by the Archaeology Survey of India. A 6th-century rock-cut Ravana Phadi Cave that houses Shiva and Parvathi is another attraction not to be missed. The caves consist of intricate craftsmanship featuring Lord Shiva, Parvathi, Ganesha, and Lord Vishnu. The other famous temples are Garudagudi, Chakragudi, Ambigaragudi, Rachigudi, Kuntigudi, Hallibasappa Gudi, Badigargudi, Trimbakeshwar temple, Mallikarjuna Temple, and Jyotirlinga Temple.

Day 3- Pattadakal

pattadakal temple

Just 13 km away from Aihole Pattadakal takes about 20 minutes to reach. A UNESCO World Heritage site from the 7th and 8th centuries consist of Hindu and Jain temples. Unique craftsmanship depicts both the North and South Indian styles of architecture. Chalukyas used Pattadakal for coronation ceremonies. One of the main attractions at Pattadakal is Virupaksha Temple. Constructed by queen Lokamahadevi in the 8th century AD to celebrate her husband and King Vikramaditya’s victory over Pallavas. Unparalleled craftsmanship at Virupaksha temple showcases the sculptures of Ugra Narshimha and Nataraja. The other popular temples in the complex are Papanatha temple, Galaganatha Temple, Sangameshwara temple, Chandrashekara temple, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Mallikarjuna Temple, Jambu Lingeshwara Temple, and Kadasiddeshwar Temple. One of the most attractive events at Pattadakal is the  Pattadakal Festival . A mesmerizing amalgamation of music and dance with Pattadakal temples in the backdrop makes the festival a visual treat for the spectators.

Day 4- Badami

Badami Cave Temple

Formerly known as Vatapi and serving as the capital of Chalukyas, Badami was constructed between the 6th and 8th centuries. Located in the district Bagalkote headquarters, Badami invites tourists, travellers, researchers, and all those who love history and heritage for its sandstone cave temples and carvings. Badami cave temple complex is home to a Jain temple and three Hindu temples. The caves at Badami are based on themes depicting, Tandava Dance by lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and his carnations. The stunning and mesmerizing backdrop of Agastya Lake and cave temple landscapes, these monuments are of great historical importance and invite photography enthusiasts. Another attraction not to be missed near Badami is the Bhutanatha temple complex. Just a kilometre away from the main Badami cave temples, these clusters of sandstone shrines were built over a period from the 7th to 11th century AD.

How to Reach

The Northern Karnataka Circuit comprising Hampi, Aihole, Pattadakal, and Badami can be best covered by road. Keeping the base station as Hampi, the other places of interest are within the 150 km range.

The major monuments include Golgumbaz, Ibrahim Roza, Jamia Masjid, Bara Kaman, Malik-e-maidan, Jod Gumbaz, Taj Bawdi, and Upli Buruz. You can also discuss with the auto driver if you have a list of places like Gagan Mahal, Shivagiri, Asar Mahal, etc you want to visit in addition to those designated by the government as monuments and ask them to take you there. Depending on the bargain, an auto will cost between 600 and 1200 rupees.

  • You’ll arrive in Badami around 8 pm and stay overnight there.

Gol Gumbaz

Day – 2 Itinerary

Circuit 2: Banashankari – Badami caves – Shivayogi Math – Mahakuta – Pattadakal – Aihole – Kudala Sangama – Bagalkot

First half itinerary

Badami caves

  • On the second day, rent a car and leave early in the morning for the Banashankari temple, which opens at 6 am. If you stayed in Bagalkot the day before you will need an hour to reach Badami so plan accordingly. It is approximately 33 km from Badami and the roads are in good condition. After breakfast, proceed to the Badami caves.
  • Banashankari temple is about 5 km from the caves. The time required here will vary depending on the crowd. We spent about 1 hour and 30 minutes at the temple due to the moderate crowd.
  • Next, you can visit the Badami cave temples. The caves open at 9 am, and you can explore them without encountering too many people. It will take approximately one and a half hours to explore all four caves and Agastya Lake. Allow additional time to visit Shivalaya and Bhoothanatha temples.
  • Next proceed to Shivayogi Math, which is 12 km away on the way to Pattadkal. You can visit the site in 30 minutes and then continue to Mahakuta.
  • Mahakuta is about 4.5 km away and you will arrive in 10 minutes. Spend around 30 minutes to an hour here taking blessings from Mahakuteshwara before continuing on to Pattadakal.

Second Half Itinerary

Durga Temple, Aihole

  • Pattadakal is 12 km away and will take approximately 30 minutes to reach. Within the Pattadkal group of monuments, there are approximately ten temples. It will take approximately 2 hours to explore all of these.
  • You can eat lunch at the small mess outside the Pattadkal temples because there are no food options near Aihole or on the way.
  • Further proceed to Aihole, which is 13 km away. Durga temple is a well-known temple in the Aihole complex. There is also an archaeological museum and a few other temples within the complex, including Suryanarayana Gudi, Gaudara Gudi, Chakra Gudi, Chikkigudi, Ambigera Gudi, and Badigera Gudi. It will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to visit all of the temples within the complex.
  • You can then travel to Kudala Sangama, approximately 35 km from Aihole. The roads on this route are not very good in between, so it will take more than an hour to reach. Kudala Sangama is the meeting point of the Krishna and Malaprabha rivers. You can halt at Bagalkot after visiting Sangameshwara temple and Anubhava mantapa.

Day – 3 Itinerary

Circuit 3: Bagalkot – Almatti – Bagalkot

Almatti dam of North Karnataka

  • After a busy day on Day 2, you can take it easy and start visiting from Bagalkot Museum around 10 am. This museum has life-sized models depicting early-day folk life essentially of North Karnataka. The museum opens at 10 am and takes about 2 hours to visit.
  • After visiting the museum, you can travel 45 km to Almatti Dam by bus, which will take approximately 2 hours to reach. There, you can see the Lava Kusha garden, the Rock garden, and the Krishna gardens until the evening. Then enjoy the fantastic musical fountain and 3D show along Mughal and Rose gardens. Following the performance, you can either stay at Almatti or Bagalkot.

Day – 4 Itinerary

Circuit 4: Bagalkot/Almatti – Hospete – Tungabhadra dam – Hospete

Tungabhadra Dam of North Karnataka

  • On Day 4, you can take a bus from Almatti to Hospet. It is approximately 144 km long and will take nearly 4 hours by bus. You can also take buses to Hospet if you stay in Bagalkot and it will take nearly 5 hours to reach.
  • Pre-book a lodge near the bus station and relax till noon. After lunch, proceed to Tungabhadra Dam which is only 15 km from Hospet. Buses run every 30 min to the TB dam. You can also take advantage of shared and private auto to TB dam.
  • Spend the afternoon at Tungabhadra Dam grounds exploring the gardens, mini zoo, play areas, and boating. In the evening, go to the crest gates and climb up to the Viewpoint near Vaikunta Guest House to watch the sunset and dam. When the dam gates are open, you can enjoy the stunning view of the colorful lighting on the water. Climb down by 7 pm to enjoy the musical fountain show, which will last 20 minutes. Following that, you can enjoy boating and other rides at the play area if you desire. Then return to your room and call it a day.

Day – 5 Itinerary

Circuit 5: Hospete – Hampi – Hospet – Bangalore

You can also climb down from Vitthala temple to Virupaksha temple and cover the remaining areas. Otherwise, you can eat lunch and rest near the Virupaksha temple. Then go exploring near the Tungabhadra River, climbing either Matanga or Hemakuta hills to watch the sunset.
  • You can take the bus back to Hospet after sunset.
  • Board the Hampi express train at 9 pm, and arrive in Bangalore by 6 am the following day.

Travel Tips to visit North Karnataka

  • The above locations are best visited between August and January. It is preferable to visit the dam during the monsoon season when the dam gates are open. Moreover, the region becomes excessively hot during the summer months.
  • If you have limited time, you can visit all of the above locations in four days by combining Day 2 to Day 4. In one day, you can visit Banashankari, Badami, Shivayogi Mandir, Mahakuta, Patadakal, Aihole, Kudala Sangama, and Almatti dam. The following day, you can travel from Bagalkot to the TB dam. Day 2 will be a bit hectic for this schedule, but you can complete them in a day if you start early.
  • You can also modify the Day 3 itinerary by taking the 8.45 pm Bjp Ypr Exp train from Almatti to Hospet. You will arrive at Hospet by 1 am. In this way, you can avoid the next morning’s journey and spend the first half of the day in either Hampi or Bellary until the evening. Then you can visit TB dam in the evening.
  • Certified guides are available in Golgumbaz, Bara Kaman, Badami, Pattadakal, Aihole, and Hampi.
  • The majority of the sites have restrooms and drinking water facilities.
  • Because the area is extremely hot, it is best to bring hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Also, if visiting during the monsoon season, don’t forget to bring rain ponchos or umbrellas.
  • When visiting North Karnataka, you should try Jolada rotti meals and Girmit. They are tasty and reasonably priced.
  • Vegetarian meals are available at all locations. In some areas, there are no large restaurants, but small canteens nearby serve good food, so you can try it there.
  • Sunflower is a major crop in North Karnataka, so you will most certainly pass through sunflower fields. If you prefer, you can stop by and visit the fields.
  • Check out our post on Belgaum and Gokak , which you can combine into your current trip to North Karnataka if you have an extra day.

You should certainly include a trip to North Karnataka on your bucket list to enjoy the diversification of nature as well as to appreciate the Hindu and Islamic architecture of the ancient period.

Road Trip to North Karnataka

The below travelogue is an itinerary of Road Trip to North Karnataka from Pune. It covers Pune – Bijapur – Badami – Aihole – Pattadakal – Bangalore – Chitradurga – Goa – Pune . The trip was done during December 2018 and we covered 2100 km in the span of 11 days .

Most of us have read about the Chalukya dynasty during school days. Having explored Hampi during Oct ’16 & Southern Karnataka in Feb ’15, in 2018 we decided  to explore the other major heritage sites of the Chalukyas in North Karnataka. This covered  Badami ,  Aihole  and  Pattadakal . We also included  Bijapur  (Vijaypura) in the bucket list, which was center for Deccan Sultanates between 15th – 17th centuries. Road Trip to North Karnataka was planned to explore these sites.

Bangalore  was included in our trip   to visit my sister-in-law and  Chirtadurga  and  Goa  were added in the itinerary to break and complete the return journey to Pune.

Road Trip Prerequisites :

We planned 11-day trip covering all of the above destinations. There are certain things to keep in mind before planning a road trip in India. Please refer to my below page for some tips.

Road Trip Plan:

1) Point of Interests (POIs):  After reviewing several online blogs, we zeroed down to the below points of interest for this trip.

  • Bijapur : Ibrahim Rauza, Bara Kaman, Gagan Mahal, Gol Gumbaj
  • Badami : Badami Caves, Agastya lake, Bhootnath Temple
  • Aihole : Mallikarguna Temple, Ravanphadi Cave, Jyotirlinga Temple Complex, Durga Temple, Ladh Khan Temple, Museum.
  • Pattadakal : Consists of 10 temples located in a single complex.
  • Chitradurga : Citradurga Fort

Note: While planning for trips, I take inputs for road conditions from Team BHP and most of my online hotel bookings are done via makemytrip and yatra

2. The Itinerary:

north karnataka tour itinerary

3. Book Hotels : We booked the below hotels based on the criteria mentioned in the Prerequisites.

  • Bijapur – Hotel Megharaj
  • Badami – Hotel Mayura Chalukya. Since we do not have good hotels in Aihole and Pattadakal we decided to stay at Badami and cover Aihole and Pattadakal from there, which can easily be done in a day.
  • Davengere (near Chitradurga) – Hotel Shoven
  • Goa  – Furtados Beach Resort

Our ride was petrol variant sedan – Maruti Swift Dezire with 1197 cc engine. My fellow passengers were my wife and 2 kids. Me and my wife were to take turns to drive

Day 1: Pune to Bijapur (347 km, 7 Hrs)

We left Pune at 8 AM and took the Pune Solapur highway (NH-65). The target was to reach Bijapur by 5 pm, including breaks for breakfast & lunch. We stopped at Vitthal Kamat for breakfast at Yavat, which is approx. 45 km from Pune. The place was decent and a bit crowded due to weekend rush. We ordered south Indian breakfast. Service was quick and food quality was good. We were back on road within 45 minutes. NH-65 is a 4 lane highway in a good condition. We touched Solapur by 2 pm and halted at Hotel Khan Chacha for lunch. This hotel is located in Rangraj Nagar area on Solapur-Hyderabad highway and is famous for its non-veg food. Though, it is a bit off way but we did not mind taking a bit of a detour. After lunch we joined NH-52 for Bijapur. NH-52 is a 2 lane highway and road widening was ongoing to make it 4 lane. There were diversions at several places. We checked in to Hotel Megharaj by 4:30 pm. The hotel was on the main road close to “Gol Gumbaj”. The evening was spent strolling in the nearby market.

Tolls paid: 5 tolls costing Rs. 275 (25+70+70+55+55)

Day 2: Explore Bijapur

Bijapur has been the center for Deccan Sultanates (Ahil Shahi Dynasty) and boasts of some magnificent monuments. All of the PoIs in Bijapur are located within a radius of 3 km. We decided to take an auto to visit all the monuments as we were not sure of availability of parking space and most of them were in the old congested areas of the city. We explored them in the below order:

Ibrahim Rauza >> Gagan Mahal >> Bara Kaman >> Gol Gumbaj

north karnataka tour itinerary

Ibrahim Rauza:  After having our breakfast at Kamat Restaurant which was at walking distance from our hotel, we drove to Ibrahim Rauza. There is an entry fee of Rs. 15 and children till 15 years get free entry. It generally takes 30-45 minutes to visit this monument. Built between 15-17th century, it houses tomb of Ibrahim Adil Shah II and his queen Taj Sultana. It is said that the beauty of this monument inspired Shahjahan to build the Taj Mahal.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Gagan Mahal:  The next monument in our list was Gagan Mahal which is an acclaimed citadel in Bijapur. Now in ruins, it was utilized as a royal residence cum darbar hall by Ali Adil Shah. The focal curve of Gagan Mahal is the tallest and most stretched out among all the structures in Bijapur. It is open on one side so that onlookers could watch the royal proceedings from outside.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Bara Kaman:  It was next in our list. It is walking distance from Gagan Mahal. It was the mausoleum built in 1672. It is one of the incomplete monuments of the Adil Shahi dynasty. It is called Bara Kaman as this was the 12th monument to be built in his reign.

north karnataka tour itinerary

It was time for lunch as soon as we completed exploring Bara Kaman. We took an auto for  Qaswa Hills , which was very close to our last POI – Gol Gumbaj. Qaswa Hills offers a variety of lip-smacking non vegetarian dishes. We tried their famous biryani and complimented it with falooda.

Gol Gumbaj:  After having a sumptuous lunch, we walked to the Gol Gumbaj which is the most famous monument of Bijapur. It is the tomb of Muhammad Adil Shah II. This mausoleum is considered to be an architectural wonders in which the hemispherical dome has been built on a square base. There is a whispering gallery around the base of the dome that can be reached through narrow circular staircases in the four corner towers. At the time of our visit, only two towers were used as the passage. One for entrance and the other for exit. The building opposite to Gol Gumbaz has been turned into a museum. There is an entry ticket of Rs. 25 (free for children less than 15 years). There is a separate Rs. 5 ticket for the museum. Car parking is available at this monument and it easily takes 1.5-2 hours to explore it.

north karnataka tour itinerary

By evening we returned back to our hotel and retired for the day.

Day 3: Bijapur to Badami (123 km, 3 Hrs) & Visit Badami Caves

We left Bijapur by 9 am and continued on NH-52. We passed via Kerur to reach Bagalkot. As soon as you enter Bagalkot you get to see a lot of shops selling local sweet delicacy – Karadantu . It is made of edible gum mixed with dry fruits and jaggery and has a chewy texture. We checked in to Hotel Mayura Chalukya maintained by KSTDC by 1 PM.

Tolls paid: 2 tolls costing Rs. 140 (55+85)

Hotel Mayura Chalukya is close to the famous Badami caves and has spacious rooms and well maintained garden. It has a restaurant which serves decent food. Though the service is little slow, the staff is courteous and helpful. Badami being a small place unfortunately does not offers too many options in terms of good restaurants. After having lunch, we started off to visit the famous Badami caves. The road leading to the car parking near the caves is a bit congested. It is better to use a public transport to reach the base of the caves. There is an entry fee of Rs. 25 (Free for Children below 15).

Badami was ruled by Chalukya dynasty between 6-7 century AD. Pulakeshin I found the city in 540 AD and made it his capital. His son Kirtivarman-I succeeded him and constructed the cave temples. The caves were built in Nagara (North Indian) and Dravida (South Indian) style of architecture. There are five caves in Badami out of which four are man-made and fifth is natural.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Cave-1  has image of Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga, Lord Ganesh. Goddesses Lakshmi and Parvati can also be seen on the walls.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Cave-2  is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. At the entrance, there is a veranda having four pillars. Two armed guards can be found at the entrance of the cave having flowers in their hands. The ceiling of the cave has a wheel which has sixteen fish spokes.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Cave 3  is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is the largest cave among the five caves. There are six pillars that support the cave. There are image of Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva and Parvati. Along with these, different postures of Lord Vishnu can also be seen.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Cave 4  is dedicated to Jainism. There is a figure of Lord Mahavira siting on a lion throne and surrounded by attendants. The sanctuary in the cave has an image of Lord Mahavira

After exploring the caves we climbed down to visit the Boothnath mandir (walk able distance from Badami Caves). The temple is built across the lake Augusta. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Day 4: Visit Aihole (37 km, 1 Hr) and Pattadakal

Aihole is considered to be “School of Architecture”, Badami a “Degree College” and Pattadakal “University of Architecture”. Having visited the Degree College (Badami) on Day 3, Day 4 plan was to visit the “School” (Aihole) & then the “University” (Pattadakal).

north karnataka tour itinerary

Pattadakal is on way to Aihole from Badami. Unfortunately, there are no good restaurants in Pattadakal. So we decided to first visit Aihole and after having lunch at the KSTDC hotel there, explore Pattadakal on way back to Badami. We had breakfast at our hotel’s restaurant and left for Aihole. The roads seemed to have been freshly laid and were in a perfect condition. We passed Pattadakal and left behind beautiful sunflower fields and reached the first temple of Aihole – Mallikarjuna temple . This is one of the first temple groups which comes into sight as you pass through Aihole village towards Durga temple complex. On the left is the sequence in which we visited all the sites in Aihole.

Mallikarjuna temple complex  has 5 temples and were built during 8th century. Most of the temples have “phamsana shikara” (roof is composed of several slabs that gently rise to a single point)

north karnataka tour itinerary

Ravanphadi caves:  There is a narrow concrete road next to Mallikajuna temple which leads to Ravanphadi caves. Since the road was pretty narrow, we decided to walk. This rock temple dates back to the 6th century. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It has got images of Parvati, Vishnu and other gods and deities.

Jyotirlinga Temple Group:  We walked back to the next temple complex – Jyotirlinga Temple Group. This complex comprises of some 16 big and small temples and most of them are in ruined condition. Most of them date back between 8th to 12th centuries.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Durga Temple Complex:  We drove to the Parking lot outside the Durga Temple Complex. There is an entry fee of Rs. 25 to enter the Complex which comprises of Durga, Suryanarayan & Lad Khan temples. It also houses a small museum.

Durga temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This temple is the most elaborately decorated monument in Aihole. The temple dates back to Chalukyan times and its architecture is of Dravida style. ASI run museum is located inside the Durga temple Complex. Though small, the museum houses inscriptions, antiques and a number of other fascinating exhibits.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Suryanarayana Temple : After visiting the museum, we walked down to the Suryanarayana Temple. It’s a small temple which houses a statue of Surya Dev (Sun God).

north karnataka tour itinerary

Lad Khan Temple:  The last monument to visit in Aihole was the Lad Khan temple. This was built by the Chalukyas and is named after a Muslim prince who converted it into his residence. This temple has got two sanctums (most of the temples have one). The main sanctum contains a Shiva Linga and a Nandi, whereas the second sanctum has carvings on the outer wall.

north karnataka tour itinerary

By the time we finished exploring the Lad Khan temple, it was time to have lunch. We drove to the KSTDC hotel, which is approx. 1.5 km from the Durga temple complex. The only option available there was a veg. thali. The food was simple. After having lunch, we headed back to Badami and visit Pattadakal on the way.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Pattadakal is 14 km from Aihole and takes approx. 20 minutes of drive. It is situated at the banks of Mahabrabha river and consists of ten temples, built in Dravidian and Nagara style in the below layout.

Jambulingeswara Temple  – This is a small 8th century Shiva temple built in Nagar (North Indian) style. There is a figure of Nataraj on the east face of the tower

Galganatha Temple  – This is again a Shiva temple built in 8th century in Nagara style. Unique feature of this temple is a pedestal path built around the sanctum and curvilinear tower with small horse shoe shaped recesses.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Sangameshvara Temple:  This is the oldest temple of Pattadakal built by Chalukya’s during AD 696 -733. This Dravidian style temple has a sanctum, navaranga and an inner passage.

Chandrashekhara Temple :  This is a small temple situated on the left side of the Sangameshwara temple. This temple is unique in the sense that there is no “Shikara” (dome) over the shrine.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Virupaksha Temple:  This is the largest temple built during the 8th-century. It was built by Queen Lokamahadevi to honour her husband Vikramaditya’s victory over the Pallavas. The temple has a massive gateway and a sanctum where the Shiva Linga is installed. A large stone bull is located inside the four pillared Nandimantapa.

Mallikarjuna Temple :  It is the smaller version of the Virupaksha Temple, built by second queen of Vikrmaditya, Trilokyamahadevi during AD 745. This temple was also built to honor victory of King Vikramaditya over the Pallavas. Pillars in the navaranga are decorated with figures from Mahabharata, Ramayana and other epics. The ceiling has figures of Shiva and Parvati.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Kashivisvanatha Temple : Built in the 8th century. The temple was built by the Rashtrakutas, in the Nagara style of architecture.

We visited all the temples by 5 pm. While driving back to Badami, the car’s fuel gauge pointed the half mark, so we got fuel topped up for the next day’s journey to Bangalore. The rest of the evening was spent relaxing at the hotel.

Tolls paid: There are no tolls on the Badami-Pattadakal-Aihole route.

Day 5: Badami to Bangalore (540 km, 10 Hrs)

Day 5 was set for travelling further south to Bangalore (Rayasandra). Our GPS suggested below options:

Route 1: Via Gadag – Harpanahalli route which is 480 km Route 2: Via Nargund – Navalgund.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Having used NH-48 (Pune-Bangalore expressway) in past, we decided to take NH-52 via Nargund – Navalgund (route 2) and join NH-48 at Hubballi. Though this route was an additional 60 km but keeping in view the smooth 6 lane drive on NH-48, it was worth it.

We left early at 7 am and targeted to hit Bangalore by 5 PM considering breaks for breakfast & lunch. Badami till Hubballi is a 2 lane highway and was in good condition. We touched Hubballi by 9 am joined the Bangalore expressway. We stopped for breakfast at Kamat and continued with the journey. Took another break for lunch at Davangere. We touched Bangalore at 4 PM and took the NICE toll road to reach Electronic City. The NICE toll road charges Rs. 180 for approx. 40 km stretch, but is a good option to avoid Bangalor’s traffic jams. We reached Rayasandra by 6 PM.

Tolls paid: 8 tolls costing Rs. 570 (80+75+55+60+20+35+65+180)

Day 6 & 7: Bangalore

Day 6 & 7 was spent relaxing at home with my sister-in-laws family at Rayasandra in Bangalore. On day 7, after detailed calculations, we got a 15 liter refill of petrol in our car for next days drive. The refill was targeted to get us till Goa and get a full top up there as petrol prices in Goa are cheapest in India.

Day 8: Bangalore to Davanagere (290 km, 5 Hrs) & Visit Chitradurga Fort

We had plans to spend the New Year eve in Goa. Distance from Bangalore to Goa is 600 km and takes approx. 12 hours by road. We decided to break the journey at Davanagere which is 300 km from Bangalore (Rayasandra) and visit the Chitradurga Fort on the way. We left Bangalore at 10 AM after having breakfast. Took a break for lunch on the way and reached Chitradurga by 3 PM.

Chitradurga Fort is surrounded by seven layered walls. This fort was built and expanded by different rulers such as Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas and Hoysalas. The fort came into prominence during the reign of the Nayakas, who were the local chiefs and ruled under the patronage of Vijayanagara Empire. There is an entry fee of Rs. 15 for adults above 15 years.

north karnataka tour itinerary

It took us about 2.5 hours to explore the fort. After having some refreshments and tea, by 6 PM we left for our hotel (Hotel Shoven) in Davangere which was 70 km from Chitradurga. The hotel is 5 km from the highway inside the Davangere city. We checking in to our hotel at 7:30 PM. We had dinner at “Ocean Park Family Restaurant” which is at walking distance from the hotel. The restaurant has an open garden setup and nice ambience. The food is good and moderately priced.

Tolls paid: 8 tolls costing Rs. 570 (180+65+35+20+60+55+75+80)

Day 9: Davangere to Goa (323 km, 8 Hrs)

Day 9 was scheduled for travel to Sernabatim (South Goa). There are 2 routes which can be taken to reach Goa from there.

Route 1: Via Darwad – Ramnanagar – Anmod. (323 Km from Davangere & 583 from Bangalore) Route 2: Via Bankapur- Yellapur – Karwar. (331 Km from Davangere & 595 from Bangalore)

north karnataka tour itinerary

Route 2 (via Yellapur), is about 10 km longer than the first route but is a good option if you want to visit on the way – INS Chapal warship museum in Karwar. But one has to be mindful of the timings of the museum, which are 9 am–12:30 pm & 4–7pm.

We wanted to visit the museum but found it difficult to make it before 12:30 pm. So we dropped the idea and decided to take the Darwad – Alnavar route to Goa. The estimated time to cover this distance was 8 hours. We checked out from the hotel at 7 am and were back on NH-48 (Pune-Bangalore Expressway). Stopped for breakfast at Hotel Kamath and continued with our journey. From Darwad, we took SH-34 to reach Ramnagar. At Ramnagar, SH-34 joins NH-748 (Belgaon-Goa highway, old name NH-4A). Road repair was ongoing on several stretches between Ramnagar and Anmod (Dec ’18) which slows down the vehicular traffic. We entered Goa by 2 PM. The fuel gauge of the car by then had crossed the reserve mark. We got the car topped up as soon as we saw the first petrol station. We stopped at restaurant Amigos for lunch in Ponta. Though the service was slow the food was good. In another 2 hours, we checked in our hotel – Furtados which was on the Sernabatim beach. We spent the evening relaxing & took a walk along the beach after having dinner at the restaurant run by the hotel.

Tolls paid: 4 tolls costing Rs. 255 (55+70+55+75)

Day 10: Goa

Day 10 was the last day of the year. We drove to German Bakery for breakfast and visited nearby Colba beach. After spending a few hours at the beach we returned back to our hotel and headed out to Sernabatim beach. We spent the rest of the day lazing around the beach. Had a sumptuous dinner in the evening. The hotel had organized fireworks at midnight and DJ which played throughout the night. There couldn’t have been a better way to welcome the New Year.

Day 11: Goa – Pune (484 km, 9:00 Hrs)

Last day of the trip was for travelling back to Pune. Google map suggests the below 2 routes from Goa till Pune:

Route 1: Via Amboli Ghat (Goa – Amboli – Ajara – Pune). 470 Km. Route 2: Via Chorla Ghat (Goa – Chorla Ghat – Belgaon -Pune). 478 Km.

Route 1 (via Amboli Ghat) is preferred when you are visiting North Goa from Pune. Since we were in Southern part of Goa,  we instead took NH-748 (Belgaon-Goa highway) via Ramnagar (Goa – Anmod – Ramnagar – Belgaon) which is 488 Km till Pune. Though this is approx. 18 km additional from route via Amboli ghat but having read good reviews on NH-784 between Ramnagar and Belgaon, we decided to go for it.

north karnataka tour itinerary

We checked out from our hotel early morning at 8 AM. Stopped for breakfast at a highway restaurant in Mollem. We reached Ramnagar by 11:30 AM. The road from Ramnagar till Belgaon passes through a scenic green forest and was in an excellent condition with a minimal vehicular movement. We entered Belgaon at 1 PM and joined the Pune-Bangalore Highway (NH-48). We had identified Hotel Opal in Kolhapur to break for Lunch. Opal is a well-known restaurant serving authentic Kolhapuri cuisine. We reached the restaurant by 3 pm and ordered lunch. The mutton preparations accompanied by Pandhara and Tambada rassa were delicious. The restaurant is located inside the city and is 3 km from the express way. We were back on the expressway in an hour. Carried on with our journey and reached Pune by 10 pm.

Tolls paid: 6 tolls costing Rs. 380 (90+25+55+60+75+75)

How to Plan a Karnataka Itinerary for First Timers

Last Updated on November 10, 2020 by hungryoungwoman

In August of 2019, I was invited to be part of the first Karnataka International Travel Expo from Karnataka Tourism. I’ve just visited Bangalore earlier but the cities we were asked to explore post the expo just opened up my mind about the state in India. Here’s everything you need to plan out a Karnataka itinerary if you are a first-timer.

As a disclosure, I was provided accommodation and travel as complimentary but I only post my honest opinions on Hungryoungwoman that remain unbiased.

Firstly, we visited Karnataka for about a week. In this course of time, we covered Bangalore, Mysore, Bandipur, and Coorg. There were packages that allowed for more places of interest in Karnataka to be covered but as we like slow traveling, we opted for this one.

To give a brief about this state, Karnataka is located in South India just above Kerala, the southernmost state in the country. The official language of Karnataka is Kannada but retail stores and most famous tourist places in Karnataka will have people speaking in English so it is not a problem to converse when you are traveling there.

There are currently 2 international airports in Karnataka; namely in Bangalore and Mangalore and a few in the works. We arrived at Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore which is quite modern in my opinion. I am comparing this to the only other airport I have seen in India which is in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Getting a visa for Karnataka is the same process as any Indian state and it is easily available online.

north karnataka tour itinerary

I am a sole believer in planning in advance. I research, find places to stay and explore in advance, as well as download any information that can help before/during the trip. An itinerary is very important to maintain and stick to especially if you are short on days or money.

Following is a 7 day itinerary for Karnataka that can be broken down into 3 days or even 2 days trip in Karnataka by choosing the location you’d like to visit.

Ideally, these holiday destinations in Karnataka should be located close to each other when you are visiting for a shorter time. Say, for example, a perfect itinerary including tourist places in Karnataka for 3 days can start in Bangalore, then Bandipur, and end in Mysore where you can fly off from there.

This includes

Tips for a holiday in Karnataka for first-timers

The best way to travel in Karnataka or most of India is to hire tuk-tuks or most commonly known as auto/auto rikshaw there. If you look like a typical tourist, drivers will try to rip you off. Since I have Indian roots myself, this is usually easy for me but some drivers can easily know I am a tourist as I can’t speak their language.

A handy tip is to check the distance of the place you need to travel to in advance. Do not, and I repeat, do not give drivers anything more than INR 200. No ride costs that much or the driver wouldn’t take you if the distance is that long.

An auto driver had ripped off a member of our tour group by charging him INR 1500 for one way and another INR 1500 back! Please don’t be that person who pays without knowing

Always bargain with drivers and try to negotiate the price to at least 50-70% of what is quoted.

What to Pack for Holiday Destinations in Karnataka

Some simple things I always have in my bag when traveling to India:

  • Light clothes like thin material pants and tees
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sanitizing wipes

Karnataka Itinerary

With seven days in Karnataka, we spent 3 days in Bangalore, 1 day in Mysore, 1 day in Bandipur, and 2 days in Coorg.

There are a number of cities in Karnataka each different in its own way. Broadly speaking, I’d categorize them into famous cities, cities for wildlife and nature, and for culture and history.

I chose to do a mixture of both tourist spots in Karnataka and the wildlife/ nature tour. If you are a history and culture fan, then visit cities like Hampi, Udupi, Hassan, and Bijapur.

We were a mixed group of about 20 people from different parts of the world traveling on a bus. Although we made a good number of friends on this trip, my husband and I realized that traveling in a group is not for us.

Sure, making friends while traveling is a good perk but adjusting according to an itinerary designed by someone else and people holding up others is not exactly fun for me. I have decided to come back later and enjoy my favorite places to travel in Karnataka alone.

Important Places in Karnataka – Bangalore City Tour

I’ve been to Bangalore a couple of times before but this was with family and I didn’t get to have a Bangalore sightseeing tour then. However, those two times I actually spent time shopping at local street shops and trying street food.

The food in Bangalore is delicious! I’ve also named it as one of the best food cities in Asia, check it here!

When compared to the tourist attractions in Bangalore, I loved the previous visits as it required interacting with and living life as locals do.

Some of the main places to visit around Bangalore are Lalbagh Botanical Garden and Bannerghatta Biological Park, these are two famous natural places to visit in Bangalore.

north karnataka tour itinerary

Our visit to Bannerghatta Biological Park was an extremely educational one. We stopped at the Bannerghatta Nature Camp by Jungles Lodges and Resorts (JLR)

JLR are state-owned properties that provide for basic amenities and facilities. Since we were on a trip with Karnataka Tourism, we stopped for lunches and tours at these hotels.

I do, however, have mixed reactions to the way animals are treated inside the enclosure. We found a few animals suffering from malnutrition, but according to staff regular checks and medicines are given in a customized diet for each animal.

I’d say, allot an entire day for your visit to Bannerghatta as it is located far enough from the city center and traffic in Karnataka is known to be one of the worst. However, don’t miss this especially if you like learning about animals.

Watching the tiger and bears from such close proximity is sure enthralling!

I will be writing a more detailed post about Bangalore city sightseeing soon and will update it here once I do.

If you’re thinking of taking day trips from Bangalore, Nandi Hills is a very good option. It roughly takes about an hour and a half by car. Known for breathtaking panoramic views, if you’re a beginner trekker then this can be a nice place to start.

For a more local feel of Bangalore, I suggest taking a Bangalore city tour with these packages from Get Your Guide, this particular one covers the market and Tipu Sultan’s summer palace. Click here for details .

Best Places in Karnataka for wildlife – Bandipur

Bangalore to Bandipur is almost 5 hours so I suggest spending at least a night there. This area is very popular for its national park. Most hotels offer a safari experience through the jungle with unrestricted animals. If you are a wildlife lover you will definitely enjoy this!

This was one of my favorite places to see in Karnataka during our trip. We stayed at the Country Club, this is probably the only thing I would change about our stay and next time we would look for a better lodge. The rooms were in bad condition without maintenance and we had weird issues like the electricity going on and off, the phone not working, and a breakfast that was very mediocre. Also, Wi-Fi only at the reception!

There are various options for every budget in the vicinity. For a luxurious stay, the Dhole’s Den seemed like a wonderful option as some members of our group were placed there.

For mid options, you can take look at the hotels below to look at prices and pictures.

We had a fantastic time exploring the jungle with Jungle Lodges and Resorts at the Bandipur Safari Lodge. A safari jeep with grills on windows is taken for a ride in the forest with a knowledgeable guide.

I especially liked how responsible this lodge is as they restrict guests from taking any eatables or engaging with animals. Use of flash cameras and talking loudly when you spot an animal is not allowed at all.

Hence, we found the jungle trails very clean unlike other places in India that are usually destroyed by tourists.

A typical safari lasts for about 2-3 hours and takes place early in the morning and in the afternoon after lunch.

Karnataka Trip for Indian culture – Mysore

Next on Karnataka places to visit list is Mysore. The former capital of Karnataka and housing the Mysore Palace of the earlier ruling Wodeyar family.

For history fanatics, learning about the Wodeyar family and their curse will be interesting. This curse which targeted the family resulted in all couples being barren for around 400 years. In order to grow the royal family, an heir had to be obtained through adoption.

Other things to do in Mysore include visiting a silk factory (and buying something made of silk as a souvenir!) and seeing the Philomena Church.

Since we were only in Mysore for a day, we couldn’t visit any of their markets and the famous Tipu Sultan Palace. I visited the palace during childhood and absolutely loved the royal furniture.

Beautiful Places in Karnataka for nature – Coorg

Other than natural tourist destinations in Karnataka like Badami and Chikmangalur, Coorg or Kodagu is a beautiful location where you can find numerous honeymoon places in Karnataka.

Most people visit to enjoy the cool climate and lush greenery but Coorg is more than that. During our stay of 2 days in Coorg, we visited the Abbey Falls and Dubare Elephant Camp (this one is again a state-owned camp)

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Sarah @ hungryoungwoman.com (@hungryoungwoman) on Sep 4, 2019 at 11:30pm PDT

I liked Coorg the most for a couple of reasons; unlike most hill stations in India, Coorg is not too high up and the ride does not make me nauseous or sick. Two, Coorg isn’t as well known as hill stations like Ooty or Munnar which means lesser crowds!

Some other best things to do in Coorg which I want to do when I’m back is to visit the coffee plantations, go on a trek, try doing a food tour, and stay at the luxury resort Coorg Wilderness Resort again. More about this coming soon so watch this space!

All in all, I extremely felt my trip to Karnataka was worthwhile! Karnataka was never a destination on my bucket list and I’m surprised why I didn’t think of it earlier considering how close it is to Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Nevertheless, I know I am coming back soon 🙂

Have you been to this state before? What according to you are the best tourist places in Karnataka or some Karnataka attractions that should not be missed? Let me know.

Visiting other places in India, then don’t miss reading my guides on a one day trip to Agra and Ahmedabad sightseeing 🙂

Until then, happy traveling! xx

Thank you so much! Bangalore’s a very nice place 🙂

Karnataka official language is “Kannada”

Ooh yes, don’t know how that slipped, thanks!

This looks like a FAB place to visit, I would love to enjoy that wildlife 🙂

I loved it! Now I want to see more and plan more of my trips around wildlife 🙂

I believe Karnataka is the most beautiful among all southern states. Massive coconut trees, beautiful canals and lush green forests are the gems of this place. Thanks for sharing this post and itinerary with all the readers. I am sure it will be helpful for beginners as well.

Yes, Karnataka is indeed beautiful!
