School of Business graduate program surges in top rankings

A U.S. News & World Report methodology change rewards schools for job placement, graduate earnings

mba in tourism jobs

The UC Riverside School of Business increased 20 positions in a U.S. News & World Report 2024 graduate school ranking released this week. UCR’s business school was the benefactor of a methodology change this year that places greater emphasis on post-graduation earnings and how quickly graduates found jobs.

The School of Business’ Master of Business Administration program ranked No. 90 on the business school list, released Tuesday, April 9. Though 506 accredited institutions were canvassed, only 124 U.S. graduate-level business programs provided sufficient information on post-graduation earnings and job placements to merit inclusion on the U.S. News list.

“The school’s ascent in the rankings is a testament to its strategic initiatives, such as the expansion of its facilities and the enhancement of its academic offerings, which align with the evolving demands of the global business landscape,” said Rami Zwick, associate dean of graduate programs for the School of Business.

The rankings released this week are based in part on reputational surveys sent to more than 15,000 academics and industry professionals, including corporate recruiters. In the surveys, deans, program directors, and senior faculty are asked to judge the academic quality of a program.

In addition to the surveys, scoring factors selectivity — gauged by graduate exam test scores; undergraduate GPA, and acceptance rate. About half of the score is based on a change this year that places greater emphasis on earnings — assessing post-graduate salaries by profession — and successful job placement. The revised job placement metric rewards business schools when their graduates get jobs quickly — either when they graduate or within three months of graduation.

Separately, the business school’s part-time MBA program was ranked No. 73, an increase of three positions from the past year. That ranking was among 269 universities.

In fall 2024, the School of Business will mark the 55th anniversary of its founding and the 30th anniversary of the A. Gary Anderson School of Management with the opening of a new 63,400-square-foot academic building .

UCR’s School of Education was ranked No. 86 out of 237 positions in the graduate school rankings, which considered only doctoral-level education programs. Last year, the school ranked No. 80.

The education rank is based on research expenditures; assessments by education-school and graduate-school deans and by professionals including recruiters and school superintendents; total degrees awarded; student-faculty ratio; faculty awards; and selectivity, measured by acceptance rates.

U.S. News this week postponed publication of its rankings for medical and graduate engineering programs after some universities questioned the rankings methodology for those programs.

U.S. News & World Report, the standard-bearer among college rankings, publishes its anticipated undergraduate rankings every fall. In the most recent rankings, released in fall 2023, UCR climbed 13 positions to No. 76 overall among U.S. private and public universities. UCR was ranked No. 2 nationally in social mobility, which considers the degree to which a university elevates its graduates to a higher standard of living.

Karol Orozco MBA’22, MS’23 pairs business and data skills with people-centered values to lead TriMet to a more just future

Karol Orozco MBA’22, MS’23 moved to the United States from Colombia nearly eight years ago with a dream of studying business with a human-centered approach. After earning her MBA and MS in Data Science from Willamette, Orozco is the Senior Project Manager of TriMet’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) team tasked with putting together the mass transit agency’s first strategic DEIA plan.

“My administrative, and business skills plus data science knowledge and experience working with marginalized communities is a valuable blend of skills for this work,” says Orozco, who graduated with honors from both the MBA for Professionals and Data Science programs, all while working full-time, raising two children, and learning English.

The value of her two degrees quickly became evident as she was offered a position at TriMet during her first year of classes. The Data Analysis, Modeling and Decision Making class with Associate Professor of Quantitative Methods Robert Walker revealed how her love for math and statistics could be applied to real-life business problems. “A lot of the work in nonprofit organizations or the government is not tangible, and we have to constantly show proof of what we do with communities,” Orozco shares.

Other classes, such as Professor of Operations Andrew Kach’s Operations and Information Management class, Strategic Management with Assistant Professor of Strategic Management Anusha Ramesh , and Global Management and Innovation with Professor of Global Management Gary Knight helped Orozco develop her project management and people-centered leadership skills.

After graduating from both programs, Orozco was offered a promotion to her current role developing TriMet’s first DEIA strategic plan. “This represents an entirely new endeavor for TriMet,” Orozco shares. “Our modestly-sized division has a significant mandate to forge meaningful connections across all staff.”

“As an immigrant and a person of color, sometimes we have to show proof of what we bring to the table,” Orozco shares. “Getting an MBA and a Master’s in Data Science gave me that credibility. Those degrees allow you to get into a new pool of candidates.”

With her recent success, Orozco hopes to inspire others, especially Latinas who are often told their aspirations are unreachable. She leads the Latinx Employee Resource Group at TriMet, serves as a connector for Latinx students and alumni of Willamette’s MBA program, and mentors a young Latina hoping to follow in her footsteps.

“I brought her to my office, and she said, ‘Wow, this is where you come every day?’ as we looked at my view of the Portland waterfront,” Orozco recalls. “‘This is so inspirational and empowers me to continue growing.’”

The National Chamber of Tourism ( CANATUR ) disclosed that among its affiliated companies, 544 people were laid off during 2024. The companies indicated that they had no other option but to fire employees in the face of the negative effects of the exchange rate. If this steady devaluation of the U.S. dollar and the resulting appreciation of the local currency continue, the chamber expects another 918 layoffs in the coming weeks.

The private sector claims that the government maintains a destructive exchange rate policy, which has caused a lot of problems for companies in the tourism industry.

Shirley Calvo, executive director of CANATUR, said that since the pandemic, businesses are making an effort to survive. However, after the COVID-19 pandemic, right when the tourism industry was recovering, the colón began to appreciate. Employers must make the difficult decision as to whether or not the income is sufficient to maintain the payroll.

“Today we are here representing almost 1,500 families that are losing their jobs as a direct result of the exchange rate policy the BCCR is implementing in this country,” Calvo said at the press conference organized by the private sector.

In less than two years, the dollar went from being close to ¢700 to close to ¢500. Currently, the U.S. currency has the same price it had in 2014, that is, a decade ago.

The business community argues that these variations make it impossible for them to plan for the long term without incurring losses, make it difficult for them to invest, and jeopardize the stability of countless jobs.

It’s worth noting that the tourism sector is crucial to the Costa Rican economy, with thousands of families in rural areas, the most vulnerable, depending on it for their livelihoods.

Business owners reminded the authorities that there have been several occasions in which the Costa Rican productive sector has come together to warn about these layoffs as an effect of the decisions made by the government.

“The BCCR has sufficient legal and technical instruments to be able to restore balance to the exchange rate policy and sanity to the economic policy,” Calvo added.

While the private sector has already made several requests to the government to take actions, the Chaves administration has defended the current exchange rate and clarified it will not take further action to alter it.
