Rise and fall of Justin Timberlake, from Prince of Pop to purveyor of 'schlock'

As his comeback single flops, fans are also re-examining his role in the downfalls of britney spears and janet jackson.

With 10 Grammys, four Emmys and the music media-bestowed title of the "Prince of Pop", it once seemed unfathomable that Justin Timberlake ’s musical crown could slip so far.

A shining star of 1990s and early 2000s pop music, Timberlake, now 43, parlayed his boyband beginnings and relationship with Britney Spears, then the biggest pop star on the planet, into an acclaimed, award-winning solo career.

Somewhere along the line, the culture shifted in ways Timberlake not only failed to anticipate, but also failed to move with.

His past actions and behaviour, particularly in relation to Spears and Janet Jackson, have been put under the microscope by a new generation in a less-forgiving cultural landscape, while his new music became the subject of a vitriolic review that went viral.

Ahead of the March 15 release of his sixth studio album, Everything I Thought It Was, here we chart the rise, decline and ultimate fall of Justin Timberlake…

1992: Early promise

Aged 11, the Tennessee-born star performs Love's Got a Hold on You by country star Alan Jackson for his appearance on US television talent show Star Search .

Performing under the name Justin Randall, he does not win, but the fame bug bites.

1993-1994: Rising talent

He wins a spot as a Mouseketeer on Disney children’s TV show The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. His fellow cast members include Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and his future Nsync bandmate JC Chasez.

“If my parents hadn't got me to those auditions, at some point I would have found a way myself,” Timberlake told The Guardian .

1995-2002: Global fame

Along with Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass and JC Chasez, Timberlake finds fame with boy band Nsync and they break through with their second album, No Strings Attached , in 2000.

Featuring the monster hit Bye Bye Bye , it wins three American Music Awards and five Billboard Music Awards. The group goes on hiatus in 2002 following their Celebrity Tour.

As Nsync establish themselves, Timberlake receives a priceless publicity boost thanks to his relationship with the biggest pop star in the world, Britney Spears. The pair go public in 1999, elevating Timberlake’s fame far above that of his bandmates.

November 2002: Solo success

Timberlake releases his debut solo album, Justified . Produced by Timbaland and The Neptunes ( Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo ), the album is a critical and commercial success. Debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 , it spawns four hit singles and wins the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album.

In his 2007 book Out of Sync: A Memoir , Bass said he and the band felt blindsided by Timberlake’s solo career, writing: “I felt completely betrayed. It ****** me off that Justin's life got set up perfectly before he came back to the rest of us.”

November 2002: Winning the public’s sympathy

Cry Me A River , the second track from Justified is released with the video featuring a Spears lookalike.

The song’s lyrics, “You told me you love me / Why did you leave me all alone?” were taken by the media and fans as proof of Spears’s alleged infidelity.

Timberlake tells People : “You get to a point when you're crying yourself to sleep every night.”

November 2003: Playing the wronged man

Spears’s interview with Diane Sawyer on Primetime helps cement Timberlake’s public persona as the betrayed party.

Sawyer drives Spears to tears with a barrage of questions including: “You broke his heart. You did something that caused him so much pain, so much suffering. What did you do?”

February 2004: Teflon Timberlake

Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" during the half-time performance at the Super Bowl saw the star vilified with long-lasting damaging effects on her career, while Timberlake escaped unscathed. Photo: WireImage

Justin emerges unscathed from the Super Bowl half-time show “wardrobe malfunction” which saw him reveal Janet Jackson ’s breast live on air.

Jackson’s music and videos are banned across network platforms causing long-lasting damage to her career. She is banned from the Grammys at which Timberlake performs and wins Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

September 2006: Onwards and upwards

After a foray into film, Timberlake releases his second solo album, the Timbaland-produced FutureSex/LoveSounds which debuts at number one on the Billboard 200 .

Three singles, SexyBack , My Love and What Goes Around… Comes Around hit the number one spot.

2013: More Grammys

Timberlake’s fourth album, The 20/20 Experience , becomes the best-selling album of 2013 in the US, with two of the singles, Suit and Tie and Pusher Love Girl , winning Grammys for Best Music Video and Best R&B Song.

February 2018: ‘Musical misstep’

Timberlake's fifth album, Man of the Woods, confused his fanbase with its pivot from pop to country sounds. Photo: RCA

The star’s fifth studio album, Man of The Woods , is released two days before he headlines the Super Bowl half-time show. Although it hits the number one spot in the US, the album is not a critical success.

Pitchfork pans it as “musically and thematically shallow”. It adds: “ Man of the Woods is a misstep large enough to merit relitigating Justin Timberlake’s status as a pop superstar.”

2019: Cheating rumours

A paparazzo image of Timberlake holding hands with his Palmer co-star Alisha Wainwright on a night out in New Orleans makes headlines.

“I apologise to my amazing wife and family for putting them through such an embarrassing situation, and I am focused on being the best husband and father I can be,” he wrote on Instagram.

January 2021: President’s man

Timberlake and Ant Clemons’s performance of Better Days is broadcast at Joe Biden’s inauguration.

February 2021: Spears documentary reframes Timberlake

The Framing Britney Spears documentary introduces her 2003 interview with Diane Sawyer to a new generation, sparking an outpouring of anger towards Sawyer and Timberlake.

“I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right,” he writes in a now deleted Instagram post.

October 2023: Spears’s memoir puts him under the microscope

Britney Spears was able to tell her side of the story in her memoir, The Woman in Me. Photo: EPA

In her tell-all book, The Woman in Me , Spears lays bare her relationship with Timberlake, putting out her side of the story, saying she was portrayed as “a harlot who’d broken the heart of America’s golden boy”.

“There's always more leeway in Hollywood for men than for women,” she writes. “And I see how men are encouraged to talk trash about women in order to become famous and powerful.”

January 2024: Vitriolic viral reviews

Timberlake releases Selfish , his first song in almost six years.

A review by the website Consequence goes viral, stating: “Time and again over the last ten years he has gone into the studio with the most accomplished hitmakers in the world, only to produce a tune about as lively as a dead house plant.”

February 2024: Unrepentant views create uncertain future

Days after Spears publicly apologises for how her book had affected Timberlake, he tells the audience at a concert in New York that he’d “like to take this opportunity to apologise to absolutely ******* nobody.”

His words are met with anger by Spears supporters, who utilise social media to rally fans to push her 2011 song Selfish above Timberlake's track of the same name in the US iTunes chart.

Timberlake's sixth album, Everything I Thought I Was, is set for release in March. Time will tell what effect his time spent out of the charts, coupled with the ever-changing tastes of a new generation of music fans will have on pop's unrepentant prince.

In correlation with his new album, 42-year-old Timberlake will perform at more than 70 shows across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe on The Forget Tomorrow World Tour . It kicks off April 29 in Vancouver.

Quick Facts

Solo career: songs, albums, and super bowl performances, new album and 2024 tour, wife jessica biel and kids, who is justin timberlake.

Justin Timberlake found fame as a member of *NSYNC and has since become a Grammy-winning solo musician and actor. The Tennessee native was a child star on The All New Mickey Mouse Club , alongside Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera . In 1995, he became a teen heartthrob with the boy band *NSYNC. After the pop group’s immensely successful run, Timberlake went solo in 2002. He proved he could stand alone with his Grammy-winning solo debut album, Justified , and has continued that success with four more albums and hit songs such as “SexyBack” and “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” Also an actor, Timberlake has starred in the movies The Social Network , In Time , and the Trolls franchise. He is married to actor Jessica Biel . His latest album, titled Everything I Thought I Was and featuring the song “Selfish,” released in March 2024.

FULL NAME: Justin Randall Timberlake BORN: January 31, 1981 BIRTHPLACE: Memphis, Tennessee SPOUSE: Jessica Biel (2012-present) CHILDREN: Silas and Phineas ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Aquarius

Justin Randall Timberlake was born on January 31, 1981, in Memphis, Tennessee, to parents Randall “Randy” Timberlake and Lynn Bomer.

Four years later, Timberlake’s parents divorced. Both have remarried, and the extended family remains close. Justin has two half-brothers on his father’s side. His half-sister died shortly after birth, and Timberlake eventually paid tribute to her in the *NSYNC song “My Angel in Heaven.”

Raised a Baptist, Justin grew up singing in a church choir. His family circle also included a number of musicians who nurtured his talent, including an uncle who played in a bluegrass band. One of his grandfathers, who had jammed with Elvis Presley , first taught the young Timberlake to play. His grandfather also introduced him to the songs of Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash . At the same time, his father played him songs by bands like the Eagles and Queen. Growing up in Memphis, home of the blues, Timberlake also got turned on to the likes of B.B. King and others.

justin timberlake smiles at the camera, he wears a multicolored striped shirt

His professional career began on the Disney-backed kids variety show The All New Mickey Mouse Club . The young teenager performed as a Mouseketeer from 1993 to 1995, alongside fellow future pop stars Britney Spears , Christina Aguilera , and JC Chasez . A young Ryan Gosling was also on the show and roomed with Timberlake and his mom for a period. After leaving the show, Timberlake had a high-profile relationship with Spears, but his friendship with Chasez ultimately became a life-changing connection.

After The All New Mickey Mouse Club , Timberlake and JC Chasez were recruited by fellow musician Chris Kirkpatrick to form a boy band in 1995. Rounding out the five-person group were Joey Fatone and Lance Bass. *NSYNC became an overnight sensation in Europe with the song “I Want You Back” before signing a record deal with RCA in 1997. Timberlake’s fate as a teen heartthrob was sealed.

*NSYNC soon became one of the hottest pop groups of the 1990s in the United States, too. The U.S. version of their self-titled debut album released in March 1998 and included another early hit “Tearin’ Up My Heart.”

After dealing with a very public legal battle with their former manager Lou Pearlman, the band released its sophomore album, No Strings Attached , in 2000. The Grammy-nominated record became the top-selling album of the year and the best-selling album of the decade. Its first single, “Bye Bye Bye,” became *NSYNC’s signature song and earned two Grammy nominations. More hits like “It’s Gonna Be Me”—the group’s only No. 1 song on the Billboard 100—and “This I Promise You” helped solidify them as one of the most popular boy bands in music history.

Celebrity , the band’s third and final album, quickly followed. The 2001 release produced three more hit singles—“Pop,” “Gone,” and “Girlfriend”—as well as two more Grammy nods. Their ensuing PopOdyssey tour became one of the biggest tours of the year, earning $90 million.

As big as *NSYNC was, the group went on indefinite hiatus in 2002 when Timberlake decided to pursue a solo career. However, the group hasn’t fallen into obscurity. *NSYNC performed at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018. Then, in September 2023, Timberlake and his former bandmates surprised fans by reuniting again at the VMAs to present the Best Pop Award to Taylor Swift and, in the process, stoking speculation they might collaborate again.

Those suspicions were proven true, as the group performed the song “Better Place” for the soundtrack of the 2023 animated movie Trolls Band Together . It marked their first project together in two decades. Bass hinted in a November 2023 interview that *NSYNC could work again. “I don’t see this as our last thing,” he said.

In 2002, Timberlake embarked on his solo career, debuting with the hit song “Like I Love You.” Later that year, he released his first solo album, Justified , which also featured the hits “Cry Me a River” and “Rock Your Body.” The album sold more than 7 million copies worldwide and earned Timberlake his first two Grammy Awards in 2004. Justified won Best Pop Vocal Album, and “Cry Me a River” bested the competition for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

The wins came on the heels of a controversial Super Bowl performance in February 2004 with Janet Jackson , in which Timberlake accidentally tore off a portion of Jackson’s costume, revealing her bare breast. The wardrobe malfunction remains one of the most infamous pop culture moments of the 21 st century and even spawned a 2021 New York Times documentary.

But the controversy didn’t tarnish Timberlake’s reputation as an in-demand pop and R&B artist. He frequently collaborated with Timbaland and the Black Eyed Peas, receiving a Grammy nomination with the band for “Where Is The Love?” He also worked with Nelly , Snoop Dogg , and Nelly Furtado.

A year after he started the record company JayTee Records in 2005, Timberlake released his second album. FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006) debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and was later nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. The album’s lead single, “SexyBack,” spent consecutive weeks as the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. Some of the album’s other hit tracks included “My Love,” “What Goes Around Comes Around,” and “LoveStoned/I Think She Knows.” Timberlake collected four more Grammys for each of the songs.

In 2008, Timberlake helped make Madonna ’s single “4 Minutes” a Top 10 hit. Not only did he provide complementary vocals, but he was also a co-writer of the song. Timberlake additionally contributed to several other tracks on Madonna’s Hard Candy album.

His next big song was also a collaboration. Timberlake returned to the music scene in January 2013 with the hit single “Suit & Tie” featuring Jay-Z . The duo performed the song at the 2013 Grammy Awards ceremony, plus Timberlake sang another new song “Pusher Love Girl.” Both won the pop star more Grammy trophies before appearing on his long-awaited third album The 20/20 Experience , released that March. Like FutureSex/LoveSounds , the record reached the top of the Billboard 200 in its first week.

Timberlake continued to enjoy this wave of success in August 2013 when he picked up the VMA Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. That October, Timberlake released a companion album: The 20/20 Experience Part 2 of 2 . The follow-up album didn’t achieve the same critical acclaim as its predecessor, though it still debuted at No. 1 and produced the popular songs “Take Back the Night” and “TKO.”

In the spring of 2016, Timberlake released “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” the lead single from the Trolls movie soundtrack. The song went straight to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as in 16 other countries. It also earned Timberlake his 10 th Grammy Award, this time for Best Song Written For Visual Media, and an Academy Award nomination.

In January 2018, Timberlake dropped the first single from his upcoming studio album, a slow bedroom number titled “Filthy.” He followed later in the month with the Top 10 hit “Say Something,” featuring Chris Stapleton . The album titled Man of the Woods , an uneven effort that included collaborations with Timbaland and Pharrell Williams , was released shortly before the Timberlake’s performance at the Super Bowl LII halftime show in early February.

The Super Bowl gig generated controversy well before Timberlake took the stage, with the hashtag #JusticeForJanet circulating on social media among Jackson fans who felt she took the brunt of the fallout from the 2004 Super Bowl show. Furthermore, the rumor that Timberlake planned to perform with a hologram of Prince incited additional backlash, as fans referenced an interview in which the deceased music icon specifically stated his opposition to that sort of special effect.

After a relatively quiet period, Timberland briefly resurfaced in 2020 to share new songs from another Trolls movie, with the more successful single being a SZA collaboration called “The Other Side.”

In late January 2024, Timberlake released his song “Selfish” and announced a new album called Everything I Thought It Was . His first record in six years, the project released on March 15, 2024. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon , the singer said he and his collaborators wrote almost 100 songs before narrowing it down to 18 tracks for Everything I Thought It Was .

His accompanying tour, titled The Forget Tomorrow World Tour , starts April 29 in Vancouver, Canada. Timberlake has announced more than 70 dates across North America, the United Kingdom, and Europe.

Not content as a major musician, Timberlake has used his performance skills onscreen as an actor. His early parts in the 2006 movies Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan garnered little notice, but he started to find traction that year as a host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live . His routines and comedic timing made him a fan-favorite host and earned him two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, in 2009 and 2011. (His SNL performances have also won him two Emmy trophies for Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics.)

On the silver screen, Timberlake first hit it big as the voice of a young King Arthur in the 2007 smash-hit animated movie Shrek the Third , which featured Mike Myers as the title character. Other work soon followed as Timberlake teamed up with Myers once again for the 2008 comedy The Love Guru . The certified triple threat next had a role in the drama The Open Road (2009), with Jeff Bridges and Mary Steenburgen.

One of Timberlake’s most notable performances was in 2010’s The Social Network , the Oscar-winning drama about the creation of Facebook. Timberlake played real-life internet tycoon Sean Parker , opposite Jesse Eisenberg’s leading role as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg . In 2011, Timberlake starred in the comedy Bad Teacher with Cameron Diaz , the rom-com Friends with Benefits with Mila Kunis , and the futuristic thriller In Time with Amanda Seyfried .

He went on to appear in Clint Eastwood ’s 2012 baseball drama Trouble with the Curve and also enjoyed a leading role in the 2013 thriller Runner Runner with Ben Affleck . Keeping in stride with his string of more serious roles, Timberlake took on the part of Neil Bogart in Inside Llewyn Davis (2013).

Next, he turned to voice work as the character of Branch in the animated movie Trolls (2016). He served as an executive music producer for the film, which has since spawned the sequels Trolls World Tour (2020) and Trolls Band Together (2023). Timberlake has contributed original music to all three movies in the franchise.

Elsewhere, Timberlake had the titular role in the 2021 Apple original film Palmer and appeared in the 2022 Netflix film Reptile .

Timberlake is married to actor Jessica Biel . They began dating in 2007 and, after navigating an on-and-off relationship over the course of several years, tied the knot in October 2012. Their wedding was in Puglia, Italy. The couple later issued the following statement to People magazine: “It’s great to be married, the ceremony was beautiful and it was so special to be surrounded by our family and friends.”

Timberlake and Biel have two sons. They welcomed Silas in April 2015, followed by Phineas in summer 2020.

Prior to his relationship with Biel, Timberlake once dated pop singer Britney Spears and actor Cameron Diaz . Spears and Timberlake made headlines once more in October 2023 with the release of her memoir The Woman in Me . In the book, the pop star said she had an abortion after becoming pregnant with Timberlake’s child. “He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young,” she wrote. Timberlake hasn’t said anything publicly about Spears’ book, but a source told Elle that “Justin and Jessica [Biel] just want everyone to grow and evolve instead of continuing to bring up the past.”

According to Celebrity Net Worth , Timberlake has an estimated net worth at around $250 million.

The Justified & Stripped Tour was a co-headlining concert tour by American recording artists Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera . It was launched in support of Timberlake's debut studio album, Justified (2002), and Aguilera's fourth studio album, Stripped (2002). Timberlake announced that he would go on a co-headlining tour at the 2003 American Music Awards on January 13, 2003, and it was officially announced the following day that Aguilera would be the co-headlined artist of the tour. Tour dates were revealed on February 21, 2003; it kicked off on June 4, 2003 in Phoenix, Arizona and visited 45 cities in North America. The Black Eyed Peas were serviced as the tour's supporting act. [1]

The set list was composed generally from Timberlake's Justified and Aguilera's Stripped . However, both artists also added material from their early works, including Timberlake's work with NSYNC and Aguilera's self-titled debut album ; she also performed two of Etta James 's songs: " At Last " and "I Prefer You". The Justified and Stripped Tour was divided into five segments, two for Aguilera and three for Timberlake, with each segment being followed by an interlude to the next segment, and it ended with an encore, lasting for a total of 160 minutes.

The tour was met with mixed reviews from most contemporary music critics . Some praised the maturities of the two artists, while others criticized their vocal abilities during the tour. They also believed that Aguilera's image during the tour resembled that of American recording artist Cher , and her part concentrated too much on her vocal abilities, while Timberlake's part worked his considerable sex appeal. However, the tour was a commercial success, garnering more than US$30 million and becoming the fifth-highest-grossing tour in 2003. [2] It also became the third-highest-grossing co-headlining tour of the year. In late 2003, the tour's extension, The Stripped Tour was held to promote Aguilera's Stripped without Timberlake's act. An extended play , entitled Justin & Christina , was released exclusively at Target Stores to support the tour.

Justin Timberlake gets soulful in Seattle

Michael Rietmulder

Concert review

Justin Timberlake was in his element. Gliding, sliding and stepping across the stage like an air-walking Morris Day out in front of an 11-piece band and brigade of dancers during an opening “No Angels” on Thursday.

The disco-pop romper off Timberlake’s new album, “Everything I Thought it Was,” is in step with the disco revival of the last few years but took on a more vintage flavor while kicking off his first of two Climate Pledge Arena shows.

“There ain’t no angels here on the dance floor,” Timberlake sang, though he and his dancers sure floated like they had halos over their heads.

More than 20 years since going solo from ‘N Sync, Timberlake arrived in Seattle, just the second stop on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, no longer at the center of the pop universe — and that’s perfectly OK, maybe even for the best.

Despite some savory moments, both this year’s “Everything I Thought it Was” and his previous album, the awkwardly framed “Man of the Woods,” were met with critical shrugs and the court of public opinion has shifted on Timberlake since the days when he had America in stitches with “Saturday Night Live” skits and palling around with celebrity bud Jimmy Fallon. Not that it’s diminished his star power, which is still bright enough to pack an arena — twice. (Timberlake, who hit the stage shortly after 9 p.m., will tackle Climate Pledge Arena again Friday night.)

None of the external noise or think-piece narratives mattered when the stage lights hit and Timberlake, who’s been performing since he was 11, does what he does best. One of this century’s most well-rounded entertainers, the classic song-and-dance man is cut from a cloth that doesn’t exist in the contemporary pop landscape quite the same way it once did.

The R&B-influenced prince of pop and sultan of FCC-friendly innuendo is a direct disciple of Michael Jackson. But he was equal parts James Brown on a punchy “LoveStoned,” the Timbaland-produced hit off Timberlake’s second solo album “FutureSex/LoveSounds.” Timberlake has more intentionally claimed his Memphis roots in recent years and his crack band the Tennessee Kids gave the mid-2000s cut a ‘60s soul revue appeal.

For better or worse, much of Timberlake’s best work is timestamped to the 2000s, thanks in part to the way his frequent collaborators Timbaland and the Neptunes defined the era’s sound. Thanks largely to the Tennessee Kids, many of the songs were unbound to the production trappings of the day, retrofit with timeless organic textures.

After a crushing “Cry Me a River,” which could have hit an even higher gear had Timberlake not taken it easy on those signature falsetto choruses, the sprawling Tennessee Kids got time to shine on “Let the Groove Get In.” The skittering, chiming percussion boiled over into a stomp-around jam, hitting like a horns-blasting march down Beale Street. Later, during a light-footed newbie “Play” drawing on ‘80s electro-funk, the horn section and a crew of dancers joined Timberlake in a full procession to a secondary stage on the opposite end of the arena.

Hopping to the floor to make his way through the crowd, JT stopped to greet a fan who was cradling a stocky little bulldog. “Honestly, this is the first dog I’ve had at my show,” a surprised Timberlake remarked. “Is this a Seattle thing?”

Timberlake and the band were most in their bag mining the soul, funk and disco sounds of yore, at one point beefing up the candy-shop love song “Pusher Love Girl” with swelling gospel vocals and doo-woppy charm. But it was hardly their only look.

“Sanctified” packed a full-blown arena-rock crunch, and late into his nearly two-hour set, Timberlake broke out an acoustic guitar for stripped-down renditions of this year’s “Selfish” and “What Goes Around… Comes Around.”

While the focus was kept on Timberlake and crew’s shoulder-popping choreography, a giant rectangular LED box that hovered and shifted above the stage was the centerpiece of the tour’s production. After a breezy “Rock Your Body” and embracing 2000s club hedonism on “SexyBack,” a harnessed-up Timberlake returned for his “Mirrors” encore atop the LED vessel that carried him above the crowd. With arms spread wide, JT leaned over the edge as the illuminated platform tilted to a 45-degree angle, making like Kate Winslet on the Titanic for a dramatic finish.

When Timberlake reunited with ‘N Sync (after years of resisting fans’ pleas) to record “Better Place” for the “Trolls Band Together” soundtrack and the song “Paradise” off his new album, some critics viewed it as a tacit conceit that Timberlake could no longer generate the same level of fervor on his own. A friendlier read is that the former boy bander and Mouseketeer, now a husband and father in his 40s like much of Thursday’s millennial-heavy crowd, is comfortable enough in his career arc that he no longer feels the need to distance himself from his past.

While both are likely true to some degree, Timberlake came off self-aware and self-assured on Thursday, joking as he briefly took a seat before a steamy dance routine during “Technicolor” that “I’m 43, so I gotta sit down for a second.”

At various points in the night, a reflective Timberlake paused to address his journey with the sort of clarity and gratitude that comes with age and stability. “If you’ve been rocking with me for two decades, almost three decades, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart,” he said after jokingly wishing a millennial fan a happy 21st birthday.

At the end of the day, that’s the connection that matters.

Where Can Justin Timberlake Even Go From Here?

By Brittany Spanos

Brittany Spanos

Has a comeback ever been more poorly timed? Approval ratings for Justin Timberlake have dipped lower each year, coming to a head when Britney Spears’ memoir The Woman in Me was released a few months ago and unveiled intimate drama from her relationship with the “Cry Me a River” singer.

It’s not like his reputation had been particularly stellar over the last several years. A reckoning with the way the media treated Spears in relation to her once-beloved ex overlapped with a reckoning for Janet Jackson, who had to publicly grovel after the Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction. Timberlake, meanwhile, exited the situation unscathed.

There was a time in the not-so-distant past that people begged for a new Justin Timberlake album, almost as passionately as everyone has been begging for Rihanna’s. His post-*NSYNC solo career was a blockbuster, with the teen idol-shedding Justified teeing up a R&B-pop homerun with FutureSex/LoveSounds . For that era, both albums were the rare perfect storm in pop music of being both critically acclaimed widely beloved. And for a member of a disbanded boy band looking for career longevity, that was no simple feat.

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Shockingly, after seven years without new solo music, Timberlake’s sprawling, two-part The 20/20 Experience from 2013 lived up to all the hype and anticipation and included a co-headlining stadium tour with Jay-Z.

Spears’ recent book was full of Timberlake revelations, painting a portrait of teenage puppy love that ended in insurmountable heartbreak for Spears. She opened up about a secret pregnancy and how the pair decided to terminate it. She also let readers in on her side of their break-up, since Timberlake had been the one to most publicize his anger. He had painted her as the philanderer, while Spears notes he had been sleeping around while on tour. She was devastated that their relationship had come to an end — via text message, of all things — and even more devastated that she was now painted as the evil woman who broke his heart.

Not even teasing a *NSYNC reunion has helped Timberlake. He reunited the band for a song on the Trolls Band Together soundtrack that didn’t make much of a splash. And while promoting “Selfish,” he alleged they recorded more music together.

Weirdly, Timberlake pulling himself up out of this career hole seems more difficult than it would be for artists who have done much more damning actions. Timberlake’s worst crimes have been that he is a privileged white guy and a pretty shitty boyfriend. Of course, it doesn’t help that both his new single and most recent album were not the best showcases of his abilities. And also doesn’t help that the shitty boyfriend allegations come from one of pop’s most beloved figures who has endured some of the most horrific music industry treatment in star in history has endured.

Oddly, his comment on not apologizing was the most interesting part of this rollout. Leaning into his new role as pop’s main villain at the moment is more seductive than trying to make his image as wholesome as possible.

Or at the very least this will be enough to bully him into an actual *NSYNC reunion tour. Maybe nostalgia can work for instead of against him for once.

Justin Timberlake: Tiny Desk Concert

Washington, DC - May 03, 2016: Stephen Thompson CREDIT: Matt Roth

Walking into the room shortly before Justin Timberlake took our cramped stage, I overheard someone on his team wondering aloud if this was to be the most densely populated Tiny Desk concert in history — which is to say, the most musicians we've ever fit in a single frame. It's not, but we don't often find a way to cram in this many human beings (15 in all) and this much gear.

Timberlake has never been one to give partial effort, but this is a production befitting the occasion: namely, a set timed to drop concurrently with the release of his new album, Everything I Thought It Was . Eschewing the rootsier feel of its predecessor, 2018's Man of the Woods , the new record is a throwback, an epic and a blowout — and so's this lavish set, which scales the Timberlake experience down to 25 minutes of maximalist celebration and, when the moment calls for it, chiller vibes.

Backed by his band The Tennessee Kids, Timberlake's Tiny Desk debut leans heavily on his early solo catalog, as he kicks it off with two songs from 2002's classic Justified and weaves in three more from 2006's magnificent FutureSex/LoveSounds — including a set-closing "SexyBack," which finds the singer trotting out a megaphone in a truly meme-worthy moment.

By the way, in case you're wondering, the all-time record for musicians behind the Tiny Desk is a whopping 23, a feat pulled off by the fantastic Mucca Pazza in 2015 . But Timberlake and company rival that classic performance's energy — in both cases, the real triumph lies not in the Tetris of it all, but in the way that many people still find ways to move, buoyantly and as one mighty organism.

NSYNC

It finally happened.

Following all the rumors and cryptic memes last fall that led to an MTV VMAs appearance and a red-carpet group photo thanks to *NSYNC ’s new song for the Trolls Band Together soundtrack, fans were left desperate for a live performance from the boy band. After all, it was a band that made its name with performative music videos, blockbuster stadium tours and iconic choreography, so when fans think “*NSYNC,” they think performance. Fans were clamoring for a full tour, sure, but they really would have settled for the band singing live together just one more time.

Justin Timberlake Reunites *NSYNC at Warm-Up Concert In Los Angeles

Well, on Wednesday night (March 13), we got that one more time. More than a decade after they last performed together at the 2013 Video Music Awards as part of Justin Timberlake ’s VMA Vanguard Award medley, they once again hit JT’s stage, this time for a one-night-only concert at The Wiltern in Los Angeles ahead of the Friday (March 15) release of his sixth solo album, Everything I Thought It Was .

It all started with a trip down memory lane, when DJ Andrew Hypes played a series of hit Timberlake features, including Timbaland’s “Give It to Me,” Jay-Z’s “Holy Grail” and 50 Cent’s “Ayo Technology.” Justin had included this segment in his other two pre-release shows as well, at his hometown concert at Memphis’ Orpheum Theatre on Jan. 19 and his show at New York’s Irving Plaza on Jan. 31. Hypes had also played a handful of *NSYNC songs at those concerts, but on Wednesday night, when he dropped the first *NSYNC song — “Gone” from 2000’s Celebrity — the curtains opened behind Timberlake to reveal his four bandmates singing harmony on the chorus.

“Ear-piercing” doesn’t properly describe the volume of the fan reaction in the room. Maybe eardrum-shattering. Or “book an appointment for your ENT to investigate the possibility of shriek-induced hearing loss” levels. This was 15 songs into an already epic concert, which included three of Timberlake’s five Billboard Hot 100 solo No. 1 hits and pretty much every other song that comes to mind when you think of Justin. But there was truly a before and after point of the concert from that moment on.

“I don’t know what to do after that,” Timberlake admitted once he was alone again onstage, before saying, “But this” and giving us one final song (what more could this crowd possibly ask for?), ending the night with 2013’s “Mirrors.”

So let’s take a step back and look at all the highlights from this concert, lest it go down in history as an *NSYNC reunion and nothing more. In fact, there were two other surprise guests who popped up during the nearly two-hour show and a host of other special moments. Below, find all the best moments – yes, of course including the reunion – from Billboard ’s vantage point as a lucky crowd member at the history-making show.

Tobe Nwigwe Is the First Surprise Guest

Looking all the way back to the night’s first song, Timberlake kicked things off with “Sanctified” – the Everything I Thought It Was track he performed with Tobe Nwigwe on Saturday Night Live in January . While JT also kicked off his Irving Plaza show with “Sanctified,” that crowd didn’t get a cameo from the Nigerian-American rapper, and it was amazing to see their electric dynamic in person. While we’ve now gotten two performances of the holy-rolling duet, fans are still waiting to hear the recording of the song when the album arrives on Friday since it hasn’t yet been commercially released.

‘VIP (Go ’Head Be Gone With It)’

Timberlake gave his A-list friends in the crowd a shout-out with a certain lyric in “SexyBack,” which was the second song of the night — and you know you’re in for exclusively hits when “SexyBack” is second up. “VIP (go ’head be gone with it),” he sang while pointing up to the balcony, where John Legend and Chrissy Teigen were sitting in the front row among other famous friends and family. Before the show, Billboard spotted the couple in the balcony singing and dancing to DMX’s “Ruff Ryders Anthem.” (Later in the night, Teigen made sure to upgrade to the floor for the *NSYNC surprise, posting Instagram Stories from just outside the pit with the captions “Oh my f—ing god @justintimberlake” and simply “dead.” )

JT’s Advice for Son Silas

Timberlake is notoriously private about his family life, especially when it comes to his two kids — 8-year-old Silas and 3-year-old Phineas — and both JT and his wife, Jessica Biel, keep their boys’ faces off social media and out of the spotlight. But the proud dad did let the crowd know between songs that Silas was attending Wednesday night’s concert. “It’s also a very special night: My son is here,” Timberlake announced to supportive cheers. “He’s up with his friend, his buddy. My other one [Phineas] is too young. He can’t; he’s in bed. Son, I just want you to know how much I love you. I want you to – and this is for everybody here: Always dare to dream. Because you never know where you might end up.”

Coco Jones Gives Her Best Beyoncé as Next Surprise Guest

Newly minted Grammy winner Coco Jones arrived onstage at the tail end of Timberlake’s “Until the End of Time,” which was released as a 2007 duet with Beyoncé, and she filled in for just a taste of Queen Bey’s wordless vocal runs to wrap the song. After sharing an onstage hug, Timberlake prompted the crowd: “Do you know about this voice up here? Don’t act like you don’t know about this voice!” That led into the first live performance of Jones’ “ICU” remix with Timberlake – yet another perk for a crowd that still didn’t know just how lucky they were.

A Backstreet Boy Supporting *NSYNC

The first inkling that something special might be happening came when AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys materialized just behind the pit and posted up to get a clear view of the stage during the throwback DJ set. A lot was made of the rivalry between BSB and *NSYNC back in their heyday, but in the decades since, they’ve spoken highly of each other, collaborated together and basically just lifted up their boy-band brethren. So it was sweet to see McLean front and center for this bit of TRL -worthy history.

‘Ladies & Gentlemen, We Are *NSYNC’

Timberlake spoke those heart-warming words after the quintet rocked with DJ tracks of “Gone” and “Girlfriend” before giving mini-performances of arguably their most enduring hits: “Bye Bye Bye” and “It’s Gonna Be Me.” But that was just the beginning.

“So we did those,” JC Chasez said of the four classics. “But you have an album coming out tomorrow. And on that album, there’s a song…”

“… By *NSYNC,” Timberlake said to finish his sentence.

“We’ve practiced the song,” Chasez said, to which Timberlake added: “Y’all wanna hear the new song?”

The new song was the lilting ballad “Paradise,” and it got its world debut on Wednesday night at The Wiltern, following a snippet posted to Timberlake’s socials earlier that day. The chorus couldn’t have had more fitting lyrics for the fans who had hoped for this very performance: “’Cause I waited/ I’ve been waiting forever/ Right here for this moment/ Between you and I/ Everything has happened/ It’s just what I imagined/ Imagined it would feel like/ Paradise.”

“I love you guys so much,” Timberlake said as he hugged his bandmates on their way offstage.

Who knows what the future holds for the blockbuster boy band, but one thing is certain: They are now well aware of how much they’ve been missed since going on hiatus more than 20 years ago. Will this lead to a new album? A tour? We’ll just have to settle for this little slice of “Paradise” for now.
