• Mount Beacon  – the highest point between the Catskills and the Atlantic Ocean. Beacon fires were built here during the Revolutionary War.
• Bannerman Island  – this historic Island is known for its warehouse, built to resemble a Scottish Castle.
• Breakneck Mountain  – legend has it that the mountain was named for a farmer’s bull that fell down the cliff and broke its neck. A granite quarry at its base supplied material for the towers of the Brooklyn Bridge, the base of the Statue of Liberty, and sidewalks in New York City.
• Cold Spring – a quaint town known for its restaurants and antiques.
• World’s End – the deepest point of the Hudson River. Explorers believed that the river stopped there, but eventually realized that after the sharp “S” bend it continued
• Constitution Island  – during the Revolutionary War, chains were run from here to West Point.
• West Point – the United States Military Academy at West Point boasts beautiful & historic buildings including Eisenhower Hall, their chapel, field house, & more.

This is a medium size ship with two levels. The cruise takes you ten miles down the Hudson River from Albany (to about Castleton, N.Y.) Great views of the Empire Plaza skyline, Fort Crailo, Capitol building, the World War II destroyer escort USS S later (which is docked next to the cruise boat) as well as some mansions which overlook the Hudson . Medical examiner confirms identity of body found in Hudson River

POUGHKEEPSIE – The State Police have confirmed the identity of the body recovered in the Hudson River off Poughkeepsie Saturday as that of 43-year-old Nicolas Faust.  He had gone missing after attending a party at a friend’s house on March 24, 2024.

His identity was confirmed by the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police have said there are no signs of foul play in the death of Faust.

Local news | hudson valley sloop clearwater struggles financially, seeks to raise $250,000 to stave off suspending programming, laying off staff.

Clearwater spends each winter from November to April at the Hudson River Maritime Museum on Kingston’s Rondout Waterfront and is planning a pay-what-you-can sail Saturday as part of the Kingston Earth Fair along with sponsoring two music stages at the event in partnership with Radio Kingston.

The Beacon-based non-profit’s financial struggles  were first reported by the Times Union.

Executive Director David Toman said Thursday that the non-profit is struggling to pay its bills. This comes on the heels of a record fundraising gala in April that raised $10,000 more than ever before, he added. He said the gala raised $135,000.

But he said that “on Monday, we couldn’t pay our bills.”

Raising $250,000 would give Clearwater a bridge to operate until the end of the year while its board, staff, volunteers and a task force of outside community members work to pull together a business model, preferably by the end of summer, Toman said.

“We need to diversify our forms of revenue to support the organization,” he said. “The business model project puts us on a path forward to ensure service and existence for decades to come. It will ensure our funding stream grows going ahead so we’re not operating in strain mode.”

He noted while $80,000 has already been pledged to help the organization, it doesn’t give it the cash it needs to continue day-to-day operations.

“We’re managing on a weekly basis how we’re trying to move forward,” he said.

Toman painted a dire picture of what could happen if the $250,000 does not come through soon. This could include drastic options like finding a place to dock the sloop, stopping all programming and laying off all 28 employees, possibly as soon as this summer, he said.

He said he believes that if this were to occur, it would pull the non-profit into a death spiral.

“If that’s the case, I don’t believe we can build back,” he said. “We’d hit a point where there are no reserves and there’d be too many triggers that put us into insolvency and that’s what we’re trying to avoid.”

Financial struggles are nothing new for Clearwater, Toman said. These struggles date back to at least two years before the COVID-19 pandemic and were only exasperated by it, he added.

Toman said Clearwater has been trying to chart a path out of those struggles since he came aboard in January 2022.

“One of our perpetual challenges since then is Clearwater has no cash reserve,” he said. “We have very low cash and a very expensive sloop. We don’t have the capacity to bridge a downturn even if it’s short.”

He said the community members up and down the Hudson River have told him Clearwater is indispensable and has inspired generations of people to pursue careers centered around the environment with agencies like the state Department of Environmental Conservation and environmental groups like Riverkeeper.

“We are a critically important organization that cannot go away, members of the public tell us,” he said.

Many credit Clearwater and its founder, the late folk icon Pete Seeger, for helping to spark the revival of the Hudson River and its riverfront communities after decades of neglect and pollution and for encouraging federal officials to pass the Clean Water Act in 1972, he said.

“Clearwater has made the Hudson Valley an attractive livable desirable place,” he said. “We know what we do is valuable. We need to succeed and we need to continue.”

Toman said Clearwater has been in contact with elected officials at the federal, state and local levels to pursue any funding opportunities and has also been in contact with private foundations.

“We’ve recieved some positive feedback, while others have said they can’t help until their next (round) of funding,” he said.

No matter what happens with potential government and foundation funding streams, Clearwater will need the support of the public through memberships and donations to achieve its goals of staying afloat, Toman emphasizes.

He encouraged Clearwater supporters locally to purchase tickets for an evening sail planned for Friday at 5 p.m. in Kingston featuring music by Emma’s Revolution and Rick Nestler. Tickets are $75 for adults, $60 for Clearwater members or Hudson River Maritime members; and $15 for children 12 and under and can be purchased at https://bit.ly/44yxRWA .

Toman also highlighted the fundraising event Paddle For Our Hudson, scheduled for Aug. 3 in Beacon.

Despite the stormy waters Clearwater is facing, Toman believes the organization will be able to navigate through it and come out stronger.

“The dollar amount is very achievable,” he said. “I’m very optimistic we’ll bridge this and get out of this.”
