  • Lightlover53 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles NICE LITTLE CRUISE ON THE HUDSON RIVER Nice cruise up the Hudson River from Kingston. Crew was very nice. Ship was clean and had plenty of seating. 2 issues however prevented this from being 5 stars. #1...lets put some decent speakers on the top level near the front of the ship. The whole cruise, we could not hear anything the Captain was telling people over the engine of the ship. I am sure I not the only one who would say this is badly needed. # 2 - All correspondence and literature on the cruise said credit cards and debit cards would be accepted for drinks and snacks. Well, when I went down paper signs around the cash register said no debit and no credit cards...and no change given, need exact amount cash payment. Well, my beer and my wife's glass of wine cost me $30.00 because the cashier could not give change. Left me with a feeling of a money grab. No reason you cannot have sufficient change on board. Your know well in advance how many people will be on board. Then once docked, the Captain politely said tips are not required but they are appreciated. Well, you got my $8.00 tip when you could give me change at the snack bar. Left a bad taste in my mouth. Overall a nice experience and it was cool to see a couple of lighthouses. • prillamo 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Enjoyable look at the Hudson We took the trip and got a different perspective of the Hudson River Valley. Our guide had interesting information about the area, history, and the lighthouse and "cottages" along our way. The ship had a spot for everyone - a heated area on the lowest deck, less breeze on the middle deck, and the upper deck was pretty breezy. If I had anything to criticize, it would be that it was hard to hear our guide over the speaker system unless you were standing right by it. Read more Written October 28, 2023
  • 444444444444444ccc 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Audioguide Perhaps should be particularized to a specific deck. Or maybe be rendered silently as part of a concise foldable brochure. How tranquil the river cruise would otherwise be. Also, the historical passages pertaining to Indian peoples being utterly annihilated is inaccurate and misleading as many tribes have proliferated unto the present day. The presentation resonates as a white hand closing the book on a melanined minority. Read more Written October 24, 2023

  • Kerry S 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Something different, simple and fun My fiancé and I went on the boat to see the fall foliage. Unfortunately the weather was cloudy and cold, and the trees had only begun to change so there wasn’t a lot of foliage, but that’s nothing the cruise can change! The guided tour takes you around the river and points out historical landmarks, castles, lighthouses, and tells you about things in the area. There were 3 levels you could roam, the top being exposed to the elements and the bottom being temperature controlled. There were clean bathrooms on board. There is a fully stocked bar with a good amount of options but we paid $28 for 1 beer and 1 mixed drink with tip. I guess it’s not bad but the mixed drink came in a small cup. We didn’t try the pretzels, pop corn or hot dogs they were selling. Luckily there were only about 50 people on board so we had plenty of room to sit and move around. Overall this was a different and fun experience and we are thinking of going again during the warmer months! Read more Written October 16, 2023

  • 98mayk 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Boat Tour Husband and I are both interested in the trading and industrial development, and maritime history of the country, and therefore of the vital Hudson River area. The history we wanted was included in the friendly narration provided, plus so much more! Also the stories of the lighthouses and their keepers, backgrounds of families still plying their trades, and the tales of successful and failed business ventures into the present. Brids seen while on board and at the dock: two adult swans with their cygnet between them, lots of cormorants and fun-to-watch seagulls, blue jays, sparrows. We lucked out on the weather, with cool breezes and bright warm sunshine. Even took off our outer jackets and jwere happy in our vests and long sleeves. Friendly passing boaters waved, fellow passengers were polite when taking their photos. Both charis and benches available, and open and covered seating areas. Popcorn was hot, candies and drinks (both sofr and "adult") available for purchase. So everyone was happy. The river was smooth and winds light so this seasick-prone sailor had zero issues. Some trees had begun to put on their fall show; lovely reflections of color in the water. The surrounding cliffs and hillsides must be gorgeous when the colors are at their height. Very good restaurants right at the dock, one has a patio with water view and open-air bar. Parking is free and convenient if you show up early. Some handicapped spots available, or just get dorpped off and the dirver can then find parking. Excellent cover from the weather provided by an overpass. Can't be happier with our experience. • Carol Z 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Pleasant cruise The cruise was relaxing, the boat was clean, and the speaker was interesting. It was a leaf peeping cruise but, unfortunately we saw no fall colors, which, of course, had nothing to do with the cruise company! We are both glad we took the river cruise as a relaxing break from our busy sightseeing schedule. Read more Written October 12, 2023

Spirit of Buffalo Cruise (Erie County)

This is a fantastic boating experience aboard the only square rigged topsail schooner sailing out of an Upstate port. The schooner is 75 feet long and you can have your choice of many different "sails" including beer and wine cruises and popular children's Pirate Sails. A magnificent sight when the schooner glides by the cityscape with its bright red sails fully puffed out from the brisk Great Lakes breezes. The mayor of the city has declared the Spirit of Buffalo as the city's official flagship! Special note: The Spirit of Buffalo is proving to be a popular place for couples to get married!

Raquette Lake Navigation Company (Hamilton County)

The cruise boat W.W. Durant has been gliding over the waters of Raquette Lake for three decades. It's a great old fashioned tour boat with beautiful sun deck on top. One of the most creative selections of cruise options of any on this list including: live music cruises, Jimmy Buffett dance parties, prime rib luncheons, wine pairings cruises, Bloody Mary brunches and many others. Special note: The ship W.W. Durant gets its name from William West Durant who designed and built many of the historic "Great Camps" found in the Adirondack Mountain region.

Canandaigua Lady (Ontario County)

The Lady is an exact replica of a 19th century double decker paddle wheel steamboat. The boat, painted red, white and blue brings a real sense of beauty and history to Canandaigua Lake. At one time there were 19 steamboats cruising the lake. The Canandaigua Lady carries on the tradition. A variety of theme cruises are available, and the bottom deck is for all-weather excursions. Special note: The Historic Narrated Excursions include an interesting history of not only the lake but of the fabled "steamboat era" and some background about the original inhabitants of the region, the Seneca Indians.

Kingston (Ulster County)

Why we love it.

Add another item to your family’s Hudson Valley bucket list: a trip on the Solaris . Launched in 2019 by the Hudson River Maritime Museum, it’s the only fully-powered solar boat on the Hudson. Its engine practically purrs, and with all that quiet, you can concentrate on the beauty of the river and enjoy the sounds of waves and wildlife. Tours aboard Solaris focus on the Rondout’s industrial past and historic nearby lighthouses, or you can take a one-hour cruise wherever the captain decides. No matter the destination, you’ll be seeing — and, more important, hearing — the Hudson in a whole new way.

More to explore

Don’t miss exhibits in the maritime museum. And for another fun excursion, hop aboard one of the Trolley Museum of New York’s historic railcars for a 1.5-mile trip to Kingston’s Hudson Riverfront park.

You’d Never Guess the Importance of this Little Hudson Valley Lighthouse

Historical lighthouses light up the Hudson River and share stories of their past. Whether it pertains to how they kept the light shining during the night or provided a place for travelers to stay during a storm, it’s fascinating to still see them standing.

A Hudson Valley lighthouse may be small but has a significant historical past.

Where Is The Only Surviving Wooden Lighthouse On The Hudson River?

Ulster County Tourism shared,

The Esopus Meadows Lighthouse was completed in 1871. They also shared the tower light

"is an official U.S. Coast Guard navigational aid."

Hudson River Lighthouses shared,

The Esopus Meadows Lighthouse is a not for profit organization. This historic lighthouse is

"one of the most picturesque and the only surviving wooden lighthouse on the Hudson River."

The Esopus Meadows Lighthouse is also known as "Maid of the Meadows" and was built on mud flats where cattle once explored.

Due to the rising seas levels, the tidals from the Hudson River submerged the flats. The flats are now covered by water and water chestnuts.

What Hudson Valley Lighthouse Is Also Known As The "Maids Of The Meadows"?

The Esopus Lighthouse is a

"34 by 20-foot stone house with an octagonal tower, built on a forty-one by fifty feet angular pier. "

During the 1800's, the land was purchased for only one dollar. In the late 1800's, $25,000 was approved by Congress to build a new lighthouse that would sit 100 feet from the old one.

In the 1960's, the lighthouse was closed with plans to get demolished by the Coast Guard. The Hudson River Valley Commission got involved to help preserve this piece of history.

The Esopus Meadows Lighthouse received recognition in May of 1979 by the US National Register of Historic Places.

Also in the 1990's, restoration for the lighthouse began thanks to the volunteers of the Save Esopus Lighthouse Commission.

How Symbolic Is The Esopus Meadows Lighthouse Along The Hudson River?

Hudson River Lighthouses explained, In September of 2002,

"the ownership was formally acquire as part of a pilot program of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000 and on May 31, 2003 the Coast Guard reactivated the light."   "The Esopus Meadows Lighthouse was recognized as a museum under the New York State Regents in July of 2001 and in September 2002 the lighthouse stewardship was authoritatively granted by the General Services Administration to the newly chartered Esopus Meadows Lighthouse."

The Esopus Meadows Lighthouse can be found on the Esopus Meadows flats which is off of the west bank of the Hudson River in the Town of Esopus, NY.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

hudson river cruise ulster

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

hudson river cruise ulster

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

hudson river cruise ulster

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

hudson river cruise ulster

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

hudson river cruise ulster

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

hudson river cruise ulster

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

hudson river cruise ulster

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

KINGSTON, N.Y. — Ulster County Comptroller March Gallagher and County Legislator Joseph Maloney are objecting to granting iPark 87 developer a National Resources request for a one-year deferment of its mortgage payments to the county until the developer pays back more than $540,000 in school taxes it owes for this year.

Ulster County Comptroller March Gallagher said National Resources is $546,240.38 in arrears on its school taxes for the West and East campuses from September 2023. She said it represents the first time the developer has not paid its taxes.

This will force the county to send a check to the Kingston City School District to make the district “whole,” she said. “We’re going to pick up the cost for the time being for the school taxes.”

“We have a bad history of people not paying taxes on this property,” she added.

She said the Ulster County Economic Development Alliance, which would need to approve any mortgage deferment plan, should not allow National Resources a break from making mortgage payments for iPark 87 until the developer pays its back school taxes.

UCEDA discussed granting a one-year deferment to National Resources during its March 27 special meeting. The agency is set to vote on granting the deferment at its April 22 meeting.

Deputy County Executive Amanda LaValle said National Resources is amenable to a one-year pause on mortgage payments after the developer previously asked UCEDA for a two-year deferment.

Gallager said the county stands to lose $1,198,722 in principal and interest for the East Campus and $914,550 in principal and interest for the West Campus totaling $2,113,272 during the deferment.

“We’re not receiving revenues that we would have received during that period,” Gallagher said. While the county will ultimately get this money, time is important, she added.

“Money today is worth more than money tomorrow, we could’ve been earning interest on this money,” she said.

The Rev. Gregory Simpson, who is UCEDA’s board president ,said he does not believe the agency should step into making the repayment of back taxes a requirement for the deferment.

“We’re negotiating with them, and it seems like everything is in good faith and is working in the right direction,” Simpson said.

LaValle agreed.

UCEDA Board Member and former Ulster County Legislator Brian Cahill admitted National Resources is not really in a winning situation right now.

“I think he’s trying to get stability and get some more people in there to get some rent-paying tenants that will help him right the ship,” Cahill said during the special meeting. “The money they have invested is far more than the school taxes.

Addressing discussions in the recent UCEDA meetings about National Resources having a difficult time obtaining bank financing, Gallagher said she’d like to see hard evidence.

“When the developer tells me they can’t obtain financing, I’d like to see the denials,” she said.

Cahill said National Resources has already invested $14 million in the site, after promising to invest $200 million into the site over 10 years in 2021.

National Resources ran into asbestos and ceiling issues at Building 1 that really set them back, Cahill said.

“That was a much unforeseen issue,” Cahill said. Now they have to deal with the abatement of the asbestos, he said, adding that, “It’s a big thing.”

He said this requires contractors to separate the debris and go in and do deconstruction making the work increasingly expensive and drawing out the timeline.

Legislator raises concerns

As this work continues, the county Legislature is set to vote at its April 16 meeting on a pair of resolutions releasing a $10 million state Restore NY Grant to National Resources for the renovation of former IBM buildings Building 1 and Building 21 “to a state fit for occupancy by high quality commercial industrial tenants, which are critical next steps in the broader re-development of the 250-acre site.”

County Legislator Joseph Maloney, D-Saugerties, expressed opposition to both the deferment plan and approving the grant.

“They’re not paying school taxes,” he said.

“They’re not giving us the $5 million,” Maloney said referring to an agreement National Resources made in 2021 to pay $5 million in cash payments to the Economic Development Alliance over a five-year period to take ownership of the site.

“This is a private business not doing well, ultimately, and they want the government to bail them out,” he said. “They promised all these private sector jobs, and it looks like all government leases.”

Gallagher cautioned that since the county previously agreed to release the liens on the property, it has no real recourse if National Resources fails to pay back its loans on time.

Maloney said he wants legislators to see detailed receipts and invoices from the $7 million remediation work National Resources pledged to do when they purchased the distressed property before they vote on releasing the grant.

Gallagher said that so far, documentation she has seen shows National Resources has spent $3.976 million on remediation. “Those numbers don’t seem unreasonable for what they’ve done.”

Gallagher said despite her concerns over the non-payment of school taxes, she still has faith in National Resources plans for long-vacant and distressed former IBM site that was once the county’s economic lifeblood.

“National Resources is a good company with a good track record,” she said. “They know how to turn these properties around.”

Gallagher said she supports the county’s plans to locate government tenants at iPark 87 including the county’s proposed Workforce Innovation Center which is to include SUNY Ulster and SUNY New Paltz, Ulster BOCES alongside private sector tenants which presently include the high-speed internet provider Archtop Fiber.
