one day in Guwahati | 24 hours in guwahati | guwahati tourist places | things to do in guwahati | places to see in guwahati

Last Updated on July 24, 2022 by admin

Guwahati is the gateway to North-East India and has a lot to offer than a transit point. Here are some amazing places to visit in Guwahati that are a mix of culture, religion, food, architecture and shopping. These Guwahati tourist places will surely make the visit memorable.

I was on a plane for the third time to Guwahati and I felt bad that there was not a single place I had explored on the earlier two trips. The first trip was a night stopover before moving towards Meghalaya , while the second trip was a work trip. I was determined to explore a few places to visit in Guwahati especially paying my respects at Kamakhya Temple Guwahati .

Table of Contents

About Guwahati

Guwahati – the gateway to North East India is rich in culture, stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife and delicious food. Guwahati now called Gauhati is the capital of the state of Assam.

Assam is one of the seven sister states in North-East India. Since Guwahati is generally the first stop for travellers to explore the Seven Sisters of India, it is only fair to spend a day here and pay a visit to the spiritual sites, explore nature and taste the range of local flavors. Guwahati tourism needs to be explored!

The place that defines Guwahati: Brahmaputra River

Places to visit in Guwahati

It is tough to decide which tourist places in Guwahati to explore. But according to me, the Guwahati trip plan must start by paying respect to the Kamakhya temple. This is my ultimate guide to beautiful places in Guwahati.

Kamakhya Temple

Built in the 9th century, this Shakti Peeth is known as to be the reincarnation of Goddess Durga. The temple is considered to be one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage spots in the country .

Although it is popularly known as black magic temple, it is also infamous for animal offerings. But keeping all that aside, this temple is important because it is the only temple that celebrates a woman’s menstruation and fertility .

Kamakhya is a celebration of the power that every woman possesses in creating a life by giving birth. Also known as the Bleeding Goddess, Kamakhya is associated with feminine sexuality, so much so that the idol in the temple is a rock shaped like a yoni or vagina. A naturally occurring spring keeps the area wet. Devotees are allowed to touch this rock fissure as a form of prayer and offer flowers.

A visit to Kamakhya temple Guwahati ensures that one gets impressed with the architecture.

Like most temples in India, Kamakhya mandir also has beautiful architecture on the outer walls as well as on the interior walls of the temple. A few sculptures also exist on the temple gates. The temple is designed as a beehive and devotees have to step down into a basement structure (the inner sanctum) to reach the rock fissure.

Visiting the temple would easily take 2-3 hours depending upon the day of the week so it is ideal to start early.

Kamakhya temple timings: 8:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm to 5:30

Entry to Kamakhya temple: Entry is free to Kamakhya temple however there are VIP tickets which makes visiting the temple sooner.

When is the Kamakhya temple closed?

Kamakhya temple is closed during the Ambubachi Mela that takes place in the month of June every year. It is closed during these 3 days and then open with a grand celebration and fervour.

Guwahati Planetarium, Guwahati

The Guwahati Planetarium is one of the popular tourist attractions in Guwahati .

The planetarium plays awe-striking videos of space that includes secrets of the universe, the evolution of the universe and scientific information about stars. It has state-of-the-art sound systems and a curved projection screen that hosts shows in English and Assamese focusing on astronomical history.

The projection of stars is the highlight and makes kids as well as adults stare in awe. Besides the star sky the planetarium also has high quality telescopes to encourage students for sky watching.

There are 140 seats in the planetarium that tend to fill up soon so it is advisable to arrive early. The duration of each show is 1 hour.

Assamese show timings at Guwahati Planetarium: 11 am, 1:30 pm and 3 pm

English show timings at Guwahati Planetarium: 12 noon and 4 pm.

Navagraha Temple, Guwahati

Navagraha is derived from two terms: nava (meaning nine) and graha (meaning planet). Navagraha is nine heavenly bodies and deities that influence human life on Earth in Hinduism and Hindu astrology.

The Navagraha temple is dedicated to the nine celestial bodies of astrological significance , represented in the form of Lingas (a symbol of divine generative energy, especially a phallic object).

Perched on top of the Navagraha Hill, near Guwahati city, Navagraha Temple is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to the nine celestial bodies. Pragjyotishapura, the ancient name of Assam originated from this temple. Built-in the late 18th century by King Rajesvar Singha, Navagraha Temple is known to have survived major earthquakes.

If astronomy interests the visitors then this is one of the best places to visit in Guwahati . The view from this temple is also lovely – one can see the Brahmaputra river in the distance.

Guwahati War Cemetery

On the way back from Navagraha temple, it is only fair to stop at the Guwahati War Cemetery.

One of the most offbeat places to visit in Guwahati, it is quite unheard of and most locals and tourists give it a miss. The Guwahati War Cemetery is built and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission . This organization also maintains a record of casualties.

However, it is a nicely maintained property that serves as the resting ground for over five hundred allied forces personnel who laid down their lives in the second world war. The graves are of brave soldiers from the United Kingdom, India, Canada, South Africa, China and New Zealand. 25 of the burials are unidentified.

The place gives a glimpse of the suffering and the young lives that were lost during the war.

It is also known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet, the Siang/Dihang River in Arunachal Pradesh, and Luit, Dilao in Assam. It is a transboundary river which flows through Tibet, India, and Bangladesh.

When will the next presidential debate of 2024 take place and who will moderate it?

By Caitlin Yilek

Updated on: August 8, 2024 / 7:57 PM EDT / CBS News

Before President Biden decided to  drop out of the race  for reelection, he and former President Donald Trump had agreed to one more showdown on the debate stage before the  2024 presidential election .

Then Mr. Biden ended his campaign, and it was unclear whether a debate between Trump and the new Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, would actually happen.

Now ABC News has confirmed both campaigns say  they will participate  in that scheduled debate.

When is the second presidential debate?

ABC News is hosting the second presidential debate on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 9 p.m. Eastern. It will be the first time Harris and Trump debate each other.

The first presidential debate , on June 27, in which Trump faced President Biden in Atlanta, came unusually early  in the election season given that neither candidate had formally received their party's nomination yet. Trump accepted the GOP nomination on July 18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Harris is set to formally accept the Democratic nomination during the party's convention in Chicago, from Aug. 19-22.

Plans for the ABC debate had been in question after Trump said on Aug. 3 that he was "terminating" it and would do a debate hosted by Fox News on Sept. 4 instead. Harris responded that she would be at the ABC News debate on Sept. 10 and hoped "to see him there."

Then, at a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Thursday, Aug. 8, Trump recommitted to the ABC News debate.

He also proposed two others, with Fox News on Sept. 4 and NBC News on Sept. 25. Harris has not yet agreed to the two additional debates. A Harris campaign spokesperson said Harris is "open to and eager to discuss more debates, but Trump has to show up to the September 10th debate first."

Who will moderate the next debate?

"World News Tonight" anchor David Muir and ABC News Live "Prime" anchor Linsey Davis will moderate the debate the debate, ABC News said.

Which candidates qualify for the debate?

The qualifications are similar to the first debate, making it unlikely that any  non-major party candidates will meet the ballot access and polling requirements to earn a spot on stage.

Candidates need to earn at least 15% support in four approved national polls and be on the ballot in enough  states to be able to win 270 votes  in the Electoral College — the threshold to win the presidency — in order to qualify.

How many more debates will there be for 2024?

There are no other presidential debates scheduled before the election at this point. The campaigns previously  agreed to only two debates — the one hosted by CNN on June 27 and the other by ABC News on Sept. 10. Trump has proposed two more, but the Harris campaign has not agreed.

CBS News has also invited both campaigns to participate in a vice presidential debate.

The candidates have  bypassed the tradition of three debates organized by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, which had overseen presidential debates since 1988. The commission's three debates were scheduled to take place in September and October at universities in Texas, Virginia and Utah. Instead, this year's debates were agreed upon without any involvement by the commission.

The commission met with sharp criticism by both Trump — who has accused the commission of being biased against Republicans — and by close advisers to Mr. Biden, who view commission procedures as outmoded and fussy. The co-chair of the commission, Frank Fahrenkopf, told CBS News' podcast "The Takeout" that top White House communications adviser Anita Dunn "doesn't like us," and he said on a Politico podcast that this was the reason Mr. Biden's team went around the commission to negotiate directly with Trump's campaign.

Texas A&M Aggies men's basketball has yet to land a commitment for the 2025 recruiting class but coach Buzz Williams and staff are making sure it doesn't stay that way for long.

Per reports from Brandon Jenkins of 247Sports, the Aggies have secured an official visit with talented four-star power forward Sebastian WIlliams-Adams. The Houston native and St. John's High School product is the No. 3 overall player in the state and 33rd in the nation, per 247's player rankings.

Buzz Williams

Williams-Adams will visit College Station starting on Friday, Aug. 30, which will mark the first of other notable OVs he has schedueld with some elite programs. He'll also be making visits to Auburn (Sept. 6), Kansas (Sept. 13), Purdue (Sept. 20), SMU (Sept. 27) and Oklahoma State (Oct. 4). Per Jenkins' report, Williams-Adams will also be visiting the Baylor Bears at some point during the basketball season.

Williams-Adams has also received offers from programs like Alabama, Houston, Texas, Texas Tech, Tennessee, Kansas State and many more.

Though the 2025 class remains a work in progress, the Aggies have put together a talented recruiting class headed into next season from both the transfer portal and the high school ranks. Earlier this offseason, Texas A&M landed portal commitments from SMU's Zhuric Phelps, Minnesota'a Pharrel Payne and Nebraska's C.J. Wilcher. Williams and co. also secured signatures from four-star guard Andre Mills and three-star George Turkson. Three-star forward Chris McDermott committed to A&M on April 30 but has yet to officially sign.

The Aggies will begin the regular season on Monday, Nov. 4 at UCF.
