10 Best Electric Campervans For The Futuristic Vandweller

Electric campervans are making tracks on the vanlife scene in a big way. This is in no small part due to rise nomads and tiny home aficionados, who often list sustainability as a driving cause for their alternative lifestyles.

But eco-friendly doesn’t just mean guilt free; there are practical reasons to opt for an electric camper . Sure, electric charging stations aren’t quite ubiquitous yet, but they’re getting there. But with battery technology improving leaps and bounds over the past years, functional range has vastly increased–allowing you to go on your off-grid adventure without turning to a gas-guzzling Goliath.

Ready to start your 21st-century vandweller life? Take a look at our list of the best electric van conversions on the market!

Top Electric Campervans to fit your style and budget

The days where building your own tiny home involved sandbags and clay are (mostly) over. Now, you can roam the earth like a proper digital nomad in your kitted-out electric campervan.

Of course, they’re not all the same–far from it! Below, we briefly review 10 of the best campervan conversions which run on electricity

1. Volkswagen Type 20

A white and black VW split screen bus; not what you might expect to see on a list of electric campervans.

I bet you weren’t expecting this to come up first now, were you?

Look, we’ve all spent a lot of time drooling (or fuming) over the new VW Buzz , which will soon be hitting a dusty highway or bustling city near you. But while we’ve been getting to grips with the new evolution of the world’s most iconic brand, something else has been lurking in the background.

The genius minds behind the classic Volkswagen Bus Camper have been working on a little beauty on the down-low–something that might make you feel a little bit like a kid on Christmas Eve.

It’s a glorious range of electric campervans that encompass all of the incredible features of the bus that we know and love, but with a new electric system that doesn’t require any tinkering with.

electric travel van

The Volkswagen Type 20 range of electric campervans will hit the ground running with 120bhp and 173lb-ft of torque. That’s a serious amount of punch for such a classic looking vehicle.

Speaking of looks, the inside of this camper conversion has had a major uplift too. You’ll find futuristic and psychedelic fixtures and fittings in both the cab and the living area. This is a nice way of paying homage to both the new modern elements that help to keep this machine nice and green; and the far-out vibes from the summer of love that made this camper what it is today.

We’ve cleverly left out a lot of details about this camper van. If you want to read more and see more pictures, then you’ll have to head over to our dedicated article on this VW Electric Campervan !

2. Fiat Ducato

electric travel van

Fiat have finally brought out an electric version of their incredibly popular camper van base, the Ducato. From professional builds to DIY dream homes , the Ducato provides people with a sturdy base vehicle to make their alternative living dreams come true.

You might not initially be able to tell, but the Ducato is the vehicle of choice for so many modified campervan models on the road today. Now it’s ready to become one of the largest eco-friendly rolling-homes in your neighbourhood.

electric travel van

Here’s a few stats to whet your appetite.

For starters, you can say goodbye to the notion of electric campervans only being able to travel to the local shop before running out our juice. The batteries in this beast produce somewhere between 130 and 230 miles (around 220 to 360km) per charge, depending on the model you choose. With electric car charging points in so many places these days, you’ll be able to cover some serious ground.

These electric campervans will have a top speed of just over 60mph, which is fast enough when you’re carrying your entire world around with you. And crucially, the Ducato will still have all the space and features that has made it rival the Sprinter camper van as the most popular conversion bed on the road.

3. Nissan Pop-Top Electric Campervans

electric campers

Weekend warriors around the world rejoice! These Nissan Electric Pop Tops, otherwise known as the NV200 and the NV300, are the perfect vehicles for a day trip to the beach with the family, or an overnight stay in your favourite forest location.

Strictly speaking, the NV200 is the ‘fully-electric’ camper out of the two while the NV300 is a hybrid. So if you want to go fully eco-friendly, then the smaller build will be the one for you.

electric travel van

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the stats and facts associated with the NV200. This all-electric, emission-free camper can travel up to 124 miles on a single charge, which is pretty impressive for such a nippy little motorhome.

It’s also quite an affordable camper , coming in at a respectable £15,000 for the basic unfurnished version. That’s a great starting price if you’re thinking about doing this van up in your own image. Otherwise, you can shell out an extra £5,000 and have somebody do it all for you.

Each camper has everthing you might need to live comfortably in the wilderness, including a kitchen with enough room for a whole range of cooking accessories . The pop top provides that much-needed space for standing and cooking, and lets extra light into the living space.

If you love the pop top but already have a ride, alternatively you can check out these pop up trailers .

4. Iridium E-Mobil Motorhome

The Iridium E-Mobil could well be the biggest motor on the electric campervans scene. It looks like a standard tourer, but it's a much different story under the bonnet!

Luxury RVs might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s no denying the brilliance of the next vehicle on our electric campervans list.

The Iridium E-Mobil Motorhome charges while you sleep, leaving you to crunch those miles the next morning bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. It works by combining a synchronous motor with a heavy-duty lithium iron phosphate battery (which we cover in depth in our camper van batteries article), plus an ingenious battery management system.

The E-Mobil can do around 200km with ease. Further bolstering your range is flexible-anywhere charging, plugging into standard wall sockets, standard charging stations, or even 50kw fast-charge stations alike. The exact time to full charge varies depending on which method you go for, but in any case it’ll be ready to go when you wake up in the morning!

The fact that such a big motorhome can be fully electric is amazing. And, if the Iridium E-Mobil can do it, then maybe we might see larger overland vehicles like the EarthRoamer Camper going the same way in the next few years. After all, having extra space to move around freely and to implement bulkier items like fridges, ovens, and sofas into your conversion really lets you stay off the grid in comfort for longer.

Sure, it’s a bulkier and slower option than the VW Type 20 or the Nissan NV200. But if you prefer motorhomes to panel vans, then it might be time to start saving up for an E-Mobil.

(For all of you hungry fact-finders out there, the E-Mobil is based on the Bela Edition P69 and will launch with a price tag around €169k.)

5. Dalbury E-Electric

electric travel van

You might have expected to find the Dalbury E-Electric in our best electric campervans list, and rightly so. How many other vehicles can boast an 80% charge after 30 minutes, a running cost of just £0.02 per mile? Or, which come with a home charging kit pre-installed for free?

electric travel van

Hillside Leisure know what it takes to make a campervan worthy of the ultimate off grid adventure . So it’s no surprise that the Dalbury E-Electric comes with the most equipment out of all of the electric campervans in our list.

E-Electric comes complete with an all- important air conditioning system for when you’re holidaying in hotter climates . It even manages to house a 39 litre fridge that hooks directly up to the 12V electrical system. There’s also a solar panel and a rearview camera, so you don’t scratch or bump your eco-house as your pull up into that perfect parking spot.

We can’t say enough good things about these all-electric campervans from Hillside Leisure. From the nifty pop-top to the cleverly designed fold – out table and comfy sleeping area, this small camper has everything for big adventures on the road.

Hillside Leisure have proven that camping doesn’t have to increase your carbon footprint. So if climate change keeps you awake at night, then grab your phone and order a Dalbury E-Electric to start cruising with a guilt-free conscience!

6. MOIA Electric Van

MOIA electric campervans

The MOIA is a unique electric van. While it’s not purpose-built to live in, it certainly could be!

MOIA is a German Uber-like company, building electric vehicles for those who want both luxury and space. Thus, they created this Transformer-looking van, which we can’t help but love.

We just wish MOIA took interest in the camping market instead of the taxi market. Imagine that, a batch of high-end campervans that you could rent out for the weekend. Now that’s what we want! Plus these things will look the part with a double bed, some technology and a kitchen in there.

7. Mercedes Sprinter

electric campers mercedes sprinter

The Mercedes Sprinter is by far one of the most popular panel vans of choice by van lifers, but now it’s getting a serious upgrade by Mercedes themselves.

They’ve noticed a bigger demand from campers, and have begun working on a fully electric camper, which can be controlled by an app. There’s no news on an official launch date; but they want you to be able to set the temperature, open up the awning and even manage all of your mechanical problems via an app too.

This is something we can get behind, and something we think will be more common in the next five or so years.

8. Rivian RT1 Electric Truck

electric travel van

We had the privilege of seeing the Rivian R1T at this year’s Overland Expo . The model we saw was kitted-out with a tent on the back, storage underneath, and a pull-out kitchen for cooking on the go. One of the neatest features we saw was the extra compartments under the back seats, which allow for cool gadgets of for even more storage.

We can see this truck teaming up with an awesome rig on the back, becoming one of worlds first electric truck campers. It can do up to 400miles on one charge, and it can hit 60 mph in just 3 seconds… Clearly, this thing is VERY powerful.

9. Tesla Camper

tesle dreamcase

This one is not official but it still works. The Tesla is becoming a very popular choice of vehicle for those living in the city, but one company called dreamcase has now turned your average Tesla into camper using a transformable bed.

And because of the Tesla’s swing-up doors and open boot, the bed can actually come with some cracking views. Admittedly there’s no pop-top, no kitchen and no toilet but it’s an affordable way to camp in your Tesla for a short period of time.

10. Neuron EV Electric Truck

electric travel van

Ok, so the last of our electric campervans might not actually be a campervan per se, but it would make an incredible conversion vehicle. And besides, it has one of the greatest front seats of all time!

How would you like to save the planet by driving a three-seater truck with a large panoramic windscreen and a single Jean-Luc Picard style captain’s chair? If the answer is “make it so”, then keep reading!

Neuron EV Electric Truck cockpit - this is where the magic happens. One seat in the very centre of the vehicle gives the driver an incredible range of sight

Neuron has a company ethos about creating safe and reliable vehicles for their customers to drive, so don’t be under any impressions that you’ll be hurtling through the forest at 5-zillion miles an hour in this truck.

The exterior profile looks a lot like a Ford F-350 crossed with a light show, which can only be a good thing when you’re pulling up to a parking spot in the dead of night. The bodywork also looks super smooth and sleek; it could be the most aerodynamic truck on earth (maybe Neuron could use that as their marketing slogan?)

RECLINING CHAIRS!

The doors open in the classic GMC style to reveal a spacious interior with two luxury reclining chairs. Who needs a bed when you can sleep on one of these, right?

Multiple cupboards line the sides of the interior space and look as though they would be big enough to fit camping gear and more inside, and the truck is more than sturdy enough to be able to house a pop-up roof tent or tent awning. This could be an interesting conversion project, just don’t get rid of those amazing chairs!

Converging where the open road meets the great outdoors, camper vans are popular for the convenience, open-road freedom, and immersion in nature they afford—but they’re heavy emitters.

“There are tens of millions of tons of CO2 emitted from RVers in the USA alone every year,” says Sam Shapiro, CEO of Detroit-based electric camper van company Grounded. Growing awareness around such climate impacts grew while Shapiro lived in what he called a “gas guzzler” fossil fuel–powered camper van in 2020, largely motivating him to found his firm.

Camper van life, at its core, is a road trip in an oversize vehicle; larger vehicles tend toward poorer gas mileage and higher CO2 emissions. As the global climate crisis worsens, transportation accounts for over a quarter of America’s carbon emissions , with most of that stemming from on-road vehicles.

Yet the marketplace for camper vans and other larger recreational vehicles (RVs) is booming, spurred by both trending #vanlife visibility on social media, as well as increased interest during the pandemic’s onset , when travelers sought alternative forms of tourism that carried less perceived risk to personal safety.

A segment of that growth is poised to be electrified, with the first batch of electric camper van concept vehicles and custom-build conversions now emerging. Big-name manufacturers like Winnebago, Volkswagen, Mercedes, and Thor are among those lining up to revolutionize the American road trip.

“The future of all vehicles is probably electric,” says Kraig Becker, digital editor at RV.com/ RV Magazine . However, he notes, “The electric camper van space is in its very early stages right now, with a handful of manufacturers exploring options and testing prototypes, but with very few actually available to purchase.”

Becker adds, “The good news is, the three main platforms used to build camper vans—the Mercedes Sprinter , Ford Transit , and Ram ProMaster —all have electric versions available now. That should allow more brands to begin testing and building e-RVs, opening the door for more models to hit the market in the near future.”

The camper van space has long been occupied by do-it-yourself individuals and smaller companies that turn out custom camper van conversions from standardized vans. Indeed, smaller startups like Grounded, with vans based on the chassis of a Ford E-Transit, have already begun sales in the United States.

Advances in battery technology are also helping to drive the electrified market, as are travel trends toward eco-consciousness and more familiarity with electric vehicles—which is especially true of younger generations, says Becker.

“As RV owners have started to trend younger in age, there is also a movement afoot to camp in a more eco-friendly, sustainable fashion. Younger buyers are definitely more interested in camping off-grid, but in a way that is easier on the planet,” he says.

Apart from the clear environmental benefits of eliminating tailpipe emissions, cost savings—with electric camper van batteries recharged at more affordable (or free) electric charging points rather than at a gas pump—is another incentive.

“These large internal combustion engine vehicles tend to be gas guzzlers, so one spends a small fortune on gas on a typical road trip,” says Shapiro.

Other leading reasons to cross over include quieter electric motors and cheaper maintenance compared to gas-powered models, as well as the ability to camp off-grid. But hurdles to widespread adoption of the electric camper vans remain.

“The charging infrastructure needs to be upgraded, EVs need to be able to charge more quickly, and manufacturers have to find ways to extend the range. EVs are also very costly at the moment, which puts them out of reach for a lot of people,” explains Becker, who says these issues should begin to resolve over the next few years, as technology improves and manufacturing ramps up . While Becker says that charging time for electric vans is not too different from that of electric cars, the range—or the distance the van can travel before needing a charge—is less, falling between just 100 to a targeted 300 miles for these first-generation electric vans.

Here’s a glimpse at the future of sustainable travel with five pioneering, clean-driving camper vans that are rolling out to redefine the #vanlife landscape. (Keep in mind that several of these vehicles are still in their concept phase; accordingly, prices and production dates are pending for most of them.)

Grounded G1

As of April 2023, Detroit-based startup Grounded, run by former SpaceX and Tesla engineers, was the first significant electric camper van company to successfully bring its product to the U.S. market. Its G1 vehicles , based on Ford E-Transit platforms, offer customizable modular, Scandinavian-inspired interiors, with sustainably sourced birch finishes and high roofing. Other features include smart, app-based technology (including remote-start HVAC control) and solar panels that allow for off-grid adventuring. The company plans to offer its G2—which will more than double the existing range from 108 to 250 miles, this fall. Rates from $125,000; groundedrvs.com

Winnebago eRV2

American RV giant Winnebago is planning to enter the electric camper van market via its all-electric eRV2 prototype that’s likewise based on the Ford E-Transit chassis. Touting a modern design scheme with sustainably sourced and recycled materials, the company claims the van’s advanced vehicle battery system, bolstered by solar panels, will be powerful enough to allow for off-grid camping for up to a week. Still in its concept phase, the model, with a current range of 100 to 115 miles, is being actively tested in the field to fine-tune the van’s final design. Though unofficial, rumors are for the eRV2s to hit the production line as soon as next year. winnebago.com

Volkswagen ID. Buzz

Volkswagen’s iconic Microbus vans helped birth America’s camper van culture back in the 1960s. So it’s fitting that it is back on the scene for the dawn of the electrified age, with the German automaker’s highly anticipated ID. Buzz van—a throwback to its hippie-favorite days—readying to enter the U.S. market later in 2024. Where “old-school cool meets new-school fuel,” the playful, retro-inspired vans will feature bold two-tone exterior paint, recycled materials, spacious configurations, ambient lighting, massaging front seats, a sunroof, and a potential range of more than 260 miles. Furthermore, the company has already announced plans to produce an ID. California camper van for the European market, likely for 2025, though no word yet on whether or when it would be distributed stateside. In the meantime, expect to see custom camper van conversions from third-party companies and individuals popping up around the ID. Thor Vision Vehicle

U.S.-based Thor Industries, the world’s largest RV manufacturer (and parent company of Airstream), is pursuing its Thor Vision Vehicle , an electric camper van that’s advertising a “best in class” 300-mile range (thanks to a combo battery pack and fuel-cell range extender) and tech-heavy features like custom app-based controls, a solar-paneled roof, voice-controlled amenities, and a “digital cockpit” for drivers, boasting a bevy of helpful apps. Touting a sleek design and plush modern interiors, Thor’s vehicle is built on an exclusive electric chassis developed in partnership with American automotive company Roush. A Thor rep tells us the concept vehicle is meant to be a “learning platform that will inform how the Thor family of companies create electric motorhomes and trailers,” so the jury’s still out on what form the company’s first-generation electric camper van will ultimately take. thorindustries.com

Mercedes-Benz Van.EA

German automaker Mercedes-Benz is launching its first electric eSprinter vans in the United States later in 2023, with a range of up to 250 miles. The brand already introduced small electric camper vans exclusively to Europe , but has now teased plans to bring a new line of premium mid- and full-size electric camper vans to the USA for the first time. Planned to debut in 2026 under its next-generation Van Electric Architecture (Van.EA) battery-electric vehicle platform, most details remain under wraps. In the meantime, be on the lookout for custom-van conversions based on Mercedes’s eSprinter to arrive from independent companies soon. media.mbusa.com

Winnebago e-RV Electric Camper Van Concept Has 125 Miles of Range

The Ford Transit–based EV RV offers a zero-emission camping experience and features sustainable materials inside.

winnebago erv electric camper van

  • The e-RV concept uses the existing Ford Transit base vehicle but swaps its gasoline powertrain for an electric motor and an 86.0-kWh battery pack.
  • Not only does the battery provide up to 125 miles of range, but it also provides power to run the concept's interior appliances.

Recreational vehicles rounded the corner into the electric era today with the unveiling of the Winnebago e-RV concept at the Florida RV SuperShow. Using a Ford Transit van as the basis of the concept, Winnebago and its powertrain partner, Lightning eMotors, swapped in an an electric motor and an 86.0-kWh battery pack.

winnebago erv concept camper van

While Winnebago did not release an estimated horsepower rating for the e-RV camper van concept, it did say that estimated driving range would be 125 miles per charge, which is significantly shorter than today's EV passenger vehicles . But the Winnebago has a bed, a kitchenette, and wet bath with a shower, all home-style amenities you won't find in a Tesla .

Speaking of amenities, Winnebago says the interior is decked out in sustainable materials, including rubberized cork for the flooring and wool wall trim that serves double duty as extra insulation. A high-speed Wi-Fi network is also incorporated into the e-RV's design, which Winnebago says provides high data-streaming levels.

Luxury travel trailer Bowlus offers a similar electric concept with its Road Chief line , but unlike the Winnebago e-RV, that camping trailer doesn't run under its own power. Instead, the Road Chief's on-board battery pack is utilized as a source of power for off-grid camping.

For right now, the e-RV is merely a concept and Winnebago says that as battery technology evolves there's a potential for additional range. The e-RV concept has an onboard charger that is capable of juicing the battery at an owner's home, at public high-speed charging ports, or while plugged into shore power at a campground. According to Winnebago, the e-RV can charge up in about 45 minutes using a high-speed public charging station.

Pricing for the e-RV hasn't been announced but we expect the all-electric powertrain will increase the price beyond that of a traditional gas-powered Winnebago camper van when it eventually reaches dealerships.

Volkswagen’s Electric ID Buzz Has Landed and Looks Well Worth the Wait

Volkswagen ID Buzz electric van

Yes, it's finally here. After years of glimpses and half reveals, Volkswagen has taken the covers off the production version of its all-electric ID Buzz. And like all the EVs we like most here at WIRED, it's got character—bags of it. Probably a lot more than can be squeezed into its microbus proportions.

With a flat front, long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a styling that pleasingly echoes the hippie bus of old, the ID Buzz is a world way from VW's more recent, not entirely successful, forays in EV van territory . Despite the VW T1, or “Bulli,” looks, this multipurpose vehicle is actually based on the same platform as the ID.3 electric hatchback. This means the ID Buzz has a 201-bhp, 150-kW electric motor driving the rear wheels. The on-board battery is 77 kWh, and while there isn't a confirmed range for the ID Buzz yet, we can expect around 250 miles.

Two Volkswagen ID Buzz electric vans parked in front of house at dusk

The ID Buzz, left, has space for families and luggage while the ID Buzz Cargo fits two 1,200- by 800-mm pallets.

The ID Buzz people carrier and ID Buzz Cargo van also have 170-kW charging, so that battery can be charged from 5 to 80 percent in 30 minutes if you can find a powerful charger. The Buzz also apes the skill we like best on the Kia EV6 , as both models will have bi-directional charging as standard. What does this mean? Not only should you be able to use your Buzz to power household appliances like a juicer or blender or TV, you can, in theory, put power back into the grid. Indeed, VW is even suggesting owners can use the feature to cut energy bills, by charging a Buzz during the day on cheap electricity, then feed this back into your home storage battery (if you have one) for use in the evening. The power transfer and auto communication to do this take place via a special DC bi-directional wall box.

Production of the ID Buzz begins later this year, with first deliveries due in the autumn in Europe. For those obsessives waiting for the all-electric ID Buzz California camper van, that likely won't be surfacing until 2025 at the earliest. For now, the people-carrying Buzz will have to do.

But there's a lot of detail here to celebrate. In the Buzz there's room for five people and their luggage, with 1,121 liters (40 cubic feet) of capacity. If the second row of seats is folded, that capacity increases to up to 2,205 liters (78 cubic feet). You get the choice of either two or three seats up front. For Cargo users, a fixed partition separates you from the 3.9-cubic-meter (138-cubic-foot) rear space.

Despite a length of 4,712 millimeters (186 inches), the long wheelbase combined with the motor at the rear means the Buzz has an impressive turning radius of just over 11 meters (36 feet)—about the same as a Golf. And, perhaps most important of all when it comes to things that drain EV batteries , VW's multipurpose vehicle quite improbably has the drag coefficient of a car. The ID Buzz's drag stats come in at 0.285 (0.29 for the Cargo), which should reduce energy consumption and increase range.

Volkswagen ID Buzz electric van

Both Buzzes have the same drag coefficient as a normal car.

The inside seems to be a particular success. Leather has been shunned for “non-animal” material. Appointments include high seat positions, comfy-looking armrests, storage trays aplenty, and more ports than you can shake a USB stick at: five in the Cargo and eight in the Buzz. The “Digital Cockpit” in front of the driver is a 5.30-inch display, and in the middle of the dash is the infotainment system touchscreen that can be specced up to 12 inches. Most physical switches are eliminated, as the car relies on haptic buttons and screens for the majority of functions. Thankfully, VW is saying it has improved the responsiveness of its haptics, which is a good thing if the past models are anything to go by. You can set the ambient lighting to 30 different colors.

And at the highest specification level, the ID Buzz will have more than 30 assist systems on board, including “Car2X” communication. The Buzz will download data via the cloud from nearby Volkswagens and supposedly learn of hazards or traffic nearby. And a “memory function” will let you teach your van tricky maneuvers such as parking on your steep drive or negotiating the parking lot at work. You do it once, then the Buzz does it each time after that, recalling your precise inputs on the steering and pedals.

No, there aren't any confirmed prices yet, and, yes, it does have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
