A Landlubber’s Guide to the Disney Cruise Pirate Night

Ahoy there, mateys! Whether it’s your first time sailing the high seas with Disney or you’re a crew of returning sailors, for many, one of the highlights of a Disney Cruise is Pirate Night. Held on one evening of your voyage on many Disney Cruise Line itineraries, this swashbuckling soiree is a ton of fun.

So, tie on your bandana, straighten your eyepatch and read on (don’t forget your pegleg!) as we go over everything you can expect from the Disney Cruise Pirate Night, including special entertainment, activities, dining and more. Not sure what to wear? (Yes, costumes are recommended.) Don’t worry – we’ve got some ideas to get your creative juices flowing. And no, we aren’t talking about rum.

Pirate Night on a Disney Cruise – What You Need to Know

Disney Wish ship in dock

No matter which Disney cruise ship you’re sailing on, what ports you’re stopping at or when you’re traveling, cruising with Disney can be downright magical. With exciting entertainment, including Broadway-style performances, fun activities, and delicious dining, there’s enough to keep you happy all cruise long (and your next cruise and your next cruise and your…).

No matter if you’re cruising during the holidays ( Halloween on the High Seas , anyone?) or setting sail the rest of the year, one of the most popular parts of many Disney Cruise Line itineraries is Pirate Night. I’ll admit, I wasn’t exactly stoked to sign up for Captain Jack Sparrow’s crew before we went on our first Disney Cruise a couple of months ago.

Oh boy, was I wrong. Between Captain Jack Sparrow making quite the entrance, getting to see everyone’s costumes (and I do mean basically everyone – almost all of the people I saw were dressed up for Pirate Night in some way, and, not to mention, some buccaneer Disney characters) and ending the night with a bang, Pirate Night ended up being one of my most favorite evenings. So, gather round, me hearties, as we go over what you can expect.

What is Disney Cruise Line’s popular Pirate Night?

As you can probably tell from the name, Pirate Night takes place during one evening of certain Disney Cruise itineraries, with activities starting early on in the day and concluding with two swashbuckling shows starring the likes of Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Hook and Captain Mickey Mouse, a figurative and literal buccaneer-friendly buffet, and a fireworks finale.

For the complete list and times for all Pirate Night activities, refer to the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app. Aspiring swashbucklers can conquer all sorts of high-seas happenings during Pirate Night, such as:

Pirate Night Treasure in Your Stateroom

Mickey on a cruise funnel

The Pirate Night fun starts in your stateroom. To get the pirate party started, your stateroom attendant will leave some gold chocolate coins emblazoned with a skull and crossbones, as well as a complimentary red Pirate Mickey Mouse bandana for each person in your party. This can be used as a subtle, swashbuckling-inspired accessory (with a sprinkle of pixie dust) to add to your pirate getup or serve as the entire costume for those who didn’t come prepared.

Mickey’s Pirates in the Caribbean Show & Deck Party

Once you’ve put on your buccaneer best, it’s time to make your way to the pool deck for Mickey’s Pirates in the Caribbean Deck Party. The show typically takes place shortly after the first dinner seating has finished.

Starring a cast of Disney characters in all their swashbuckling finery – including Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy and Goofy – the show sees this adorable pack of pirates sing, dance and teach sailors how they, too, can live the pirate life. But, keep a weathered eye on the horizon. The villainous Captain Hook and his faithful first mate Mr. Smee have also been known to sail these seas.

Buccaneer Blast! Fireworks at Sea (Pirate’s Rockin’ Parlay Party on the Disney Wish)

Atrium of a cruise ship

A Disney Cruise Pirate Night doesn’t just offer a night of wholesome buccaneering fun. It also features the only fireworks show at sea. After all, every pirate tale needs to have something gold and sparkly. It just so happens that, for Pirate Night, we mean fireworks instead of treasure.

While not on the same level as shows like the Epcot or Magic Kingdom fireworks, the show, the only pyrotechnic display of its kind in the cruise industry, is still thrilling and the perfect way to end the night. The show takes place back on the pool deck and usually starts after the second dinner seating has finished. Then, once the fireworks are over, it’s time to boogie like a buccaneer at the Club Pirate Dance Party.

On the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, guests get in the swashbuckling spirit during Buccaneer Blast!, featuring Captain Jack Sparrow and his motley crew of pirates. With Captain Jack’s crew kicking things off with some improvised songs inspired by some guests and his epic entrance rappelling down from the cruise ship’s funnel, it’s as amusing as it is action-packed.

On the Disney Wish, meanwhile, Pirate Night winds down with the Pirate’s Rockin’ Parlay Party hosted by Captain Redd, a descendent of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride’s famous redhead. Along with an appearance by Captain Jack Sparrow and an explosive ending, this high-seas adventure with a rock ‘n roll twist features edge-of-your-seat stunts, exciting special effects and a rock rendition of Disney’s classic sea shanty, “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me).”

Pirate-Themed Dinner in the Main Dining Rooms

Deck of cruise ship

The high-seas hijinks of Pirate Night don’t stop there. You can also eat like a pirate (minus the scurvy and obscene amounts of rum, of course) with a swashbuckling-inspired menu in the rotational dining restaurants. Please note that three-night sailings with a Pirate Night miss out on this specially-themed meal.

Served at each of the main dining rooms on the ship (not the adults-only signature restaurants like Remy, Palo and Enchanté) for sailings of four nights or more, the Pirate Night dinner features a special menu filled with tropical flair. Think dishes like the Deep-Fried Calypso Crab Cake, Tia Dalma’s Jerk Chicken, and Jack’s Treasure-of-the-Seas with seared scallops and grilled shrimp. Even your server will get in on the fun, decked out in buccaneer garb with some pirate phrases possibly thrown in for fun.

Adventurous Activities the Whole Family Will Love

Looking for more buccaneer-inspired fun to keep you entertained between shows? Guests can also take part in all sorts of activities especially for the event. In addition to things like pirate trivia and plentiful photo opportunities, one of the best parts of Pirate Night is seeing your favorite Disney characters all decked out for adventure on the high seas. Just remember that lines to meet characters can get long, particularly when they’re in unique costumes, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Late-Night Buffet for Hungry Buccaneers

Cruise ship in the water

From climbing the rigging to swabbing the deck, being a pirate can be exhausting. Fortunately, for any late-night, scallywag-related hunger pains, there’s the Disney Cruise Pirate Night buffet. Set up in the ship’s casual buffet restaurant, complete with pirate-y décor, this swashbuckler’s smorgasbord is sure to satisfy any cravings.

Pirates League Takeover of the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

While no longer available in the theme parks (just Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique ), the Pirates League is alive and well on Disney Cruise Line. Available exclusively on Disney Cruise Pirate Party Nights, the Pirates League is perfect for those wanting a treacherous transformation.

Unlike Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, guests ages 3 years and above are welcome to participate in a Pirates League makeover, with prices starting at $99.95 for kids and $69.95 for adults. Pirates Leagues packages take approximately 30 minutes and come with the following:

Swashbuckle (Children) – $99.95

  • Pirate vest and waist belt
  • Shoulder parrot
  • Bandana, eye patch and earring
  • Makeup application

Swashbuckle (Adult) – $69.95

Pirate (Children) – $199.95

  • Pirate costume of your choice
  • Treasure chest cinch bag
  • Coin necklace

Is there a Pirate Night on every Disney Cruise?

Disney Magic Cruise Ship at Sea

Sadly, not all Disney Cruises have a Pirate Night. The themed evening was recently removed from Marvel Day at Sea itineraries, and due to environmental restrictions, fireworks (the hallmark of Disney Cruise Pirate Nights) are not permitted during Alaskan cruises and some European itineraries.

That said, from the Disney Dream to the Disney Wonder, all Disney cruise ships do offer itineraries with a Pirate Party Night, and you don’t even need to be sailing to the Bahamas or the Caribbean. Many sailings lasting three nights or longer include this swashbuckling soiree, with Pirate Night typically scheduled for the third night of your Disney Cruise. However, this could change to accommodate the weather. To find out for certain, refer to your itinerary closer to embarkation or check the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app.

Does everyone dress up for Disney Cruise Pirate Night?

Costumes aren’t required for Pirate Night on a Disney Cruise. Having said that, the vast majority of cruisers do dress up for the occasion, even the adults. You’ll see everything from folks donning the bandana from their stateroom with their everyday clothes to all-out costumes worthy of any Halloween contest.

Although it can be fun to put on your best pirate garb and walk around saying “arrr” all night, not everyone enjoys dressing up or has enough room in their suitcase for a full-on costume. You should do what makes you comfortable, whether that’s cosplaying as Captain Jack Sparrow, throwing on a red-and-white-striped shirt with black pants and tying a free bandana around your head, or just wearing your normal clothes.

Tips & Tricks for a Disney Cruise Pirate Night You’re Sure to Treasure

Stairway with cat

Whether you are always down to get dressed up, have been practicing your pirate speak for ages, or are simply here for the booty (and by ‘booty,’ we mean fireworks and pirate-inspired eats), these easy-to-follow Disney Cruise Pirate Night ideas will make sure you won’t want to walk the plank by the end of the night.

How Will Cruising After COVID Change Your Vacation

Join the pirate night crew with a scalawag-worthy costume.

While we totally support you in whatever decision you make (it’s your vacation, after all), we do highly recommend that you dress up in some way for Pirate Night. Disney Cruise guests go all in on theme nights, and Pirate Night is no exception. Look at your budget and luggage and get in on the fun by putting on whatever amount and style of pirate garb is right for you.

Planning Your Pirate Night Disney Cruise Outfits

Trying to do a lot with just a little bit of money and space? Consider going for a casual, DisneyBounding-style look with affordable everyday pieces you can possibly wear again. This is the route my group took during our first Disney cruise, and we’re glad we did.

Rather than spending a bunch of money on something we would only wear once or twice, we opted to use wearable pieces that didn’t take up too much room – some we already owned – like ripped, black jeans, peasant-style tops, red skirts, horizontal-striped shirts, and black boots.

The pièce de résistance? The freebie bandanas from our stateroom. These also make for the ultimate low-effort Disney Cruise Pirate Night costume: Just show up in your regular cruise wear, tie one around your head and sport a menacing snarl. And bonus, they take up no space in your suitcase at all.

Ice cream cone with signage

Ready for more? Add in accessories like a pirate hat and plushie shoulder parrot, wait until you get onboard and arm yourself with a toy sword from one of the ship’s shops, or pack a pirate Halloween costume.

Or, for the ultimate Disney Cruise pirate costume, book a treacherous transformation at the Pirates League. Not only does each mutinous makeover comes with makeup and at least a few outfit pieces, but the experience is also a ton of fun.

Spots can fill up fast, so schedule your reservation ahead of time. Early afternoon timeslots are our favorite as they don’t coincide with any Pirate Night activities and allow you plenty of time to try out your new swashbuckling look.

Storm the Deck Early for the Best Views of the Pirate Night Shows & Fireworks

When it comes time for the live shows of Pirate Night, the pool deck fills up faster than you can say shiver me timbers. So, you’ll want to get there at least a little bit early to make sure you have a good spot to take it all in. On the bright side, there’s plenty going on to keep you entertained until the show begins, like taking photos, bottomless soft-serve, and watching the constant stampede of pirates.

You’ll especially want to be strategic about where you decide to watch the fireworks, whether Buccaneer Blast or Pirate’s Rockin’ Parlay Party. No matter which ship you’re on, the fireworks are launched from the starboard side of the ship (the right side if you’re facing toward the bow, or front, of the ship).

Large TV screen on ship deck

Accordingly, some of the best fireworks views on Pirate Night can be had from the ship’s port side, as this allows you to see both the stage show and the fireworks from the same vantage point. The starboard side is also good when it comes to pyrotechnics, but you’ll miss a lot of the show.

For those with a Verandah Stateroom on the starboard side, you might even be able to watch the display from your balcony, especially if it’s located near the bow. However, due to safety concerns, those with rooms located midship or aft may be asked to stay off of their balconies during the display.

Skip Out on the Themed Pirate Night Feast in Favor of an Adults-Only Dinner

I’ll be honest. As someone who typically loves Caribbean food and global flavors overall, this wasn’t my favorite dinner of the cruise. Even our delightful server couldn’t muster up much enthusiasm over the menu, and for good reason. It was all very meh.

So, as much as I love a meal with a theme, this is the one Pirate Night event I’d probably skip on my next Disney Cruise and do one of the adults-only eateries like Palo, Remy or Enchanté instead.

Hijack Late-Night Hunger at the Disney Cruise Pirate Night Buffet

Plate with 1923 at table

Still hungry after your Caribbean-inspired dinner? Whether you were equally unimpressed with the Pirate Night fare or have the appetite of Captain Hook’s alligator nemesis, this late-night buffet is sure to satisfy. Likewise, don’t overeat at dinner and risk being too full to try something.

Take Advantage of Pirate Meet-and-Greets & Other Ferocious Photo Opportunities

We love meeting Disney characters when they’re all dressed up – even better when we’re decked out, too. Not only does it help to make ‘conversation’ with the character, but donning your buccaneer best makes for some truly memorable photos with the rest of your pirate crew. And, don’t forget about all those fun photo backdrops!

Well, aspiring swashbucklers, that concludes our guide to the Disney Cruise Pirate Party. Have you experienced this popular theme evening? What part of Pirate Night is your favorite? Let us know in the comments! Then, find out how to save on your next pirate adventure by booking your Disney cruise with us .

Taking A Disney Cruise to Alaska

Whether this is your first Disney Cruise or just one you’ve wanted to do for a long time, know that a Disney Cruise to Alaska is a BIG DEAL! Exploring the last frontier via Disney Cruise Ship is unparalleled, and there are a lot of things to consider if this is your next family vacation. From Planning a Disney Cruise to Alaska to knowing What to Pack for a Disney Alaska Cruise , you may find yourself getting a bit overwhelmed. But, never fear! We’re sharing all our experiences in the posts on this blog to help you get the most out of your Disney Alaska Cruise.

Where does a Disney Cruise to Alaska Depart From?

Disney Cruise Line offers 5-night, 7-night, 8-night, and 9-night Alaskan cruises from Vancouver. As such all Disney Alaska cruises start and end in the city of Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada.

Where does a Disney Alaska Cruise Go?

A Disney Alaska Cruise on the Disney Wonder sets sail from Vancouver,  Canada, and brings you all the way to Skagway along Alaska’s southeastern coast. Making a few stops at ports along the Alaska coastline along the way, we wanted to chart our journey here so you could see all the moving parts included in an Alaska Cruise. This post deep dives into our 7-Night Alaska Cruise from Vancouver, Canada . Covering an Alaskan Cruise Itinerary for a Disney Alaska Cruise that stops at Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan .

Do any Disney Alaska Cruises leave from Seattle?

Disney Cruise Line does not depart from Seattle, as they depart from Vancouver, Canada. However, there are other Cruises to Alaska that depart from Seattle. Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, and Royal Caribbean all offer roundtrip Alaska cruises that sail from Seattle, Washington.

Disney Wonder Cruise Ship to Alaska

Taking the Disney Wonder to Alaska

Disney Cruise Line’s current Alaska-designated ship is the Disney Wonder; one of our favorite ships. If you’ve never sailed on this boat, be sure to check out our posts for everything you need to know about the Disney Wonder to help you feel at home onboard.

How to Get to Vancouver for a Disney Cruise to Alaska

Much like trips to Disney Aulani in Hawaii, if you don’t live on the West Coast, half the battle is getting there. As such we went back and forth on the pros and cons of Flying into Vancouver for a Disney Cruise, or Taking the Train to Vancouver for a Disney Cruise. Of course, after seeing prices from our local airport to Vancouver International Airport ( YVR) and hearing some horror stories about how long it takes to get through Customs when you fly in, we decided the train would be best. So, we booked airline tickets from our home airport to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport ( SEA), which kept us in-country and out of long customs lines. We then headed to the Embassy Suites Hotel , which is located right next door to the King Street Station. This is where we grabbed the Amtrak Cascades Train  and headed for Vancouver.

Alaska Airlines

By far the Best Airline for Alaska Travel, Alaska Airlines is a good flight experience all around. Still offering free non-alcoholic beverages and in-flight snacks, Alaska Airlines is worth the look. Plus, baggage costs were cheaper than most airlines and the whole process was easy. While Alaska Airlines doesn’t offer an Alaska Cruise with Airfare package, there are many ways to make your travel easier with a travel agent.

Seattle to Vancouver Cascaes Train Disney Cruise to Alaska

Amtrak Cascade Train from Seattle to Vancouver

A bonus of taking the Amtrak Cascades Train from Seattle to Vancouver is that the Customs officer simply checks each passport while guests are on the train. No lines. About a 4-hour ride from Seattle to Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station, the train offers nice seating, ample overhead baggage storage, a baggage car, and a small cafe offering packaged snacks and coffee. The views from the train are worth the trip and great if you’re looking for a leisurely start to your vacation.

View from Pan Pacific Hotel

Vancouver Hotels for a Disney Cruise to Alaska

By far the BEST hotel in Vancouver for your Disney Cruise to Alaska, the Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver is located on top of the Cruise Terminal. While there are plenty of other hotels nearby, staying at the Pan Pacific means that you can literally ask the bellman to take your luggage the morning of your departure, and they will make sure it gets on the ship for you! Just be sure to have your Disney Wonder luggage tags attached.

We also like the Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver for your Disney Alaska Cruise, because being this close to the cruise port means you can actually watch the boat come in the morning of your embarkation day.

The Fairmont Waterfront Hotel is also near Canada Place and another easy walk to the Crusie terminal. While we didn’t stay here, it would be a great alternative if you were looking for somewhere close that you could walk to, and tote your own luggage back and forth, without the need for an Uber to port.

Tips for a Disney alaska Cruise

Alaska Cruise from Vancouver British Columbia Canada | Day 1

Arriving in Vancouver for your Disney Cruise to Alaska means that you’ll be headed to Canada Place ; home to the Vancouver Sails and the Cruise Port Terminal. This building includes a massive convention center but is also home to the Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver, a Starbucks, the Canadian Historical Trail, the Flying over Canada Attraction, and several eateries to fill the time. Extremely walkable, you can get a taste of Vancouver just by being in this area. All guests should be Onboard by 4 pm for Embarkation Day . So be sure to check out your details from the Disney Cruise Line Check-in Process for your Port Arrival Time.

Disney Cruise Line App

As soon as you board the ship you can access the Disney Cruise Line App. Simply TURN ON Airplane Mode and Connect to the Disney Cruise Line Wi-Fi. Then open your Disney Cruise Line App. Once onboard and in the app you can see onboard activities, the time for the sail away party, the drinks of the day, and make any last-minute purchases for excursions or classes onboard. Activities are posted for each day and show the day, time, and location of each. Plus, you can heart the activities you like so you can keep track of your favorite things and when they’re happening.

Lunch on the Ship

If your port arrival time happens around lunchtime, then be sure to check out Cabanas or whichever Rotational Dining Restaurant on the Disney Wonder is serving up lunch on your embarkation day. In the past, we’ve eaten lunch at both Triton’s and Tianas onboard the Disney Wonder. Both offer a sit-down dining experience and can give you a chance to relax and make your plans for the evening. If choosing to head to Cabanas, know that this quick-service restaurant gets pretty crowded. Lined with food stations this restaurant offers a variety of seafood, salads, sandwiches, and more. Additional seating can be found on deck as well, so if the weather is nice, it’s most likely your best bet to manage the crowds.

Disney Cruise Sail Away Party

No Disney Cruise would be complete without a Sail Away Party, and sailing away to Alaska is something to celebrate! As your debarkation time nears head to the upper decks to get a good view of the stage, and FunnelVision. This is where the magic happens. Grab a drink or ice cream and settle into your spot for the Sail Away Party show. Filled with catchy songs and Disney friends, this is a great way to get the cruise party started. And since the entertainment team is part of this show, it’s the first time you get to “meet” them too! Take note of faces and names, as this team leads all the activities onboard the ship and will become your fast friends over the next 7 days.

Kid’s Club Open Houses

Day one on a Disney Cruise often means the opportunity to explore the ship and get to know the Kid’s Club spaces. We talk about the Kid’s Clubs on the Disney Wonder in our Disney Wonder Cruise Ship Guide , but if you’re looking to get the kids settled be sure to check out the open houses and get them ready. Times and details can be found in the Disney Cruise Line App, often referred to as the Disney Navigator, once you’re onboard.

50MB FREE Internet

Let us just say, Disney Cruise Wi-Fi is generally horrible; yes, even when you pay $90 extra for it. And we’d be remiss if we didn’t at least mention it in this Disney Alaska Cruise Guide. That said, be sure to give yourself a head start by signing up for the Free 50MB you have available to you on the FIRST DAY ONLY. This is able to be used throughout your cruise, but many can’t make it last that long. Here are some tried and true tips.

  • Disable ALL notifications on your phone. Otherwise, as soon as you claim the credit, it will get used, in less than a minute, due to notifications.
  • Turn OFF Background Refresh. Typically accessible from Settings- General. Otherwise, every app you have will use your wi-fi for updates, without you knowing it.
  • Sign in to the Disney Cruise App, and click on Connect to the Internet.
  • Once logged in “Claim” your Free 50 MB.
  • LOG OUT! By far the most important thing to know. If you don’t log out once you’re done using the internet it will stay “ON” the entire time and you’ll burn through it in minutes.
  • Note, if you’re hoping to make the most of the free MB offered to you, we recommend being mindful of the websites you’re visiting. Videos, Ads and more can bleed you dry in MB fairly quickly.

Disney Day at Sea on Disney Alaska Cruise

Disney Alaska Cruise Day At Sea | Day 2

Disney Cruises offer opportunities to see wildlife at sea, the Northern Lights, and shore excursions you won’t experience elsewhere. And every Disney Cruise offers ample opportunities for all ages to have fun at sea. From pool time, movies in the theaters, and classes for adults to family-friendly crafts and activities, there is plenty to do onboard for your Disney Cruise Day at Sea. On a Disney Alaska Cruise, however, you’re offered even more opportunities to learn about Alaska, in addition to all the other fun stuff of course.

Alaska Wildlife Cruise Viewing

Depending on the time of year you visit, there is a variety of Alaskan wildlife you can see on a Disney Cruise to Alaska. Seals, Whales, Eagles, and even bears can be seen from the boat throughout your cruise. While an Alaska small ship cruise can get you closer to some of the wildlife at sea, those extra excursions do cost extra, so be sure to check your options ahead of time if you’re hoping to add those excursions to your cruise.

Alaskan Naturalist Talks Onboard

We had several opportunities throughout the cruise to learn about the landscape, ocean, and wildlife of Alaska due to specially offered Alaskan Naturalist talks. Featuring local naturalists, these mini-presentations gave us an inside look at the types of birds, whales, and sealife we may see throughout the trip. While you may not want to spend your afternoon in the Walt Disney Theater watching a PowerPoint and hearing stories, it gave us exactly what we needed to help identify the wildlife we were seeing during the cruise.

Disney Trivia

Ahhh, we can never get enough Disney Trivia. Luckily, every Disney Cruise has ample opportunities to put your knowledge to the test or pick up some fun facts along the way. “What Disney Movie has the tagline; A Great Love Story ?- Bambi!” And if Disney Trivia isn’t your thing there are other topics too! 90s Music Trivia, Television Trivia, and even Traditional British Pub Quiz questions pop up as activities you can do onboard.

Disney Character Meet and Greets

Another popular At Sea Day activity is getting to meet the Disney Characters. Mickey and Friends and the Disney Princesses are usually available sometime throughout the Days at Sea for photos. And it’s a great way to grab pictures on your less busy days.

Bingo on a Disney Cruise

Nothing is more fun than Bingo on a Disney Cruise. With a high-energy feel, this activity can win you money and is family-friendly too. The cast members do a great job of keeping up the high vibes, and you may even win some Disney Cruise Line Freebies just for participating.

Glacier Day on a Disney Cruise to Alaska

Alaskan Glacier Viewing Day Disney Cruise At Sea | Day 3

By far one of the most important parts of your whole Disney Alaska Cruise is seeing the Glacier tucked away in Alaska’s Inner Passage. While the glacier you see may vary ( Dawes Glacier, Stewart Glacier, Sitkine Ice Cap, etc.) be ready to stand on deck with all the other guests and marvel at nature as you weave slowly through the fjords. Glacier Viewing Day often includes slow sailing that happens until about 12 noon. But of course, your Cruise Director and Captain will keep you posted on when the glacier may be in view. As this is the most beautiful day for Alaskan scenery many guests just head to the top decks and claim their spots. Often hours ahead of time. That said, here are a few things to know about the Alaskan Glacier Viewing on Disney Cruise. Check out out Glacier Day Video for a sneak peek.

Disney Alaska Cruise Glacier Day Tips

  • Dress Warmly. If you’re standing on Deck you will have fjord winds to deal with, which can be bracing. Be sure to have sunglasses, gloves, a hat, a scarf, and a coat; preferably with windbreaker capabilities.
  • Have your Camera and Binoculars.  Smaller glaciers, seals, whales, and beautiful mountains are all part of what you may see on your Inner Passage journey, so be ready for it.
  • Naturalist Narration of the Scenery. As you get closer to the glacier you can expect an onboard narrated talk by a local Naturalist, shared over the loudspeakers. To hear the commentary, you may need to get closer to the speaker locations, as the winds dull much of the sound.
  • Hot Cocoa is Served. On the Disney Wonder, you can grab mugs of Hot Cocoa in the basketball court area on the top deck. This area has a section that is covered and offers relief from the wind. And even with decent weather in the 60s, it will still be “cold” enough in the fjords to warrant the cocoa creaminess as a treat while you watch out for the glacier.

Disney Cruise Alaska Packing List

Mixology Class | $40

One of the many things for Adults on a Disney Cruise is a plethora of classes and tastings. From chocolate liqueur tastings to food and wine pairings to Anyone Can Cook classes, there are plenty of things to be had. On this last trip, we tried out the Mixology Class. Note: Specialty Classes need to be Reserved Ahead of Time as spots fill up fast. So when you’re Planning your Disney Cruise , be sure to add whatever strikes your fancy to your reservations list.

The Mixology Class on our Disney Cruise was quite amazing. Not only did we get a little history of The Cadillac Lounge, where we were hosted, but also a slew of alcoholic drinks to try. Our host shared details about each drink and then showed us how adding something different could make it a whole new drink, with a different name. Very laid back, we probably had about 5 mini drinks by the time the class was over. Completely worth the $40 price tag.

Disney Cruise at Skagway Port

Skagway Alaska Cruise Port | Day 4

Port Times : Guests Ashore at 7:15 am Guests Onboard at 8:00 pm

Our first port on this Disney Alaska Cruise was Skagway. Know that sometimes the cruise itinerary is in reverse, so depending on your itinerary this may be your last stop. By far our favorite Alaskan port, Skagway is home to the astounding history of the Gold Rush. While this little town may look a bit sleepy, there is so much history here that it’s completely worth the deep dive. And you really get the rich storytelling when you book the excursion we did. Of course, there are also several things to do in Skagway on your own if you’re skipping the Port Excursions . From walking trails, to museums, and history placards littered among the streets, there is plenty to do here if you’re up for browsing. Check out our tour of Skagway video. Here are some of our favorites.

White Pass Railroad Skagway Excursion Disney Cruise

White Pass Railroad and Skagway Street Car City Highlights | Disney Excursion $179

The Alaska Excursion we were most excited about was the White Pass Railroad and Skagway Street Car City Highlights Excursion . Running  4 hours and 30 min, at a rate of $179 per person, we felt this cost to be absolutely worth it. Mind you, if you’re bringing small children, consider the toll that 4.5 hours of talking  grown-ups and natural landscapes may do. For adults, this can be heaven, but for kids- well we saw quite a few asleep by the time we got on the train.  Included in this Disney Excursion are the Skagway Alaska Street Car Tour, the Klondike Highway Drive and Talk, and the White Pass Railroad Train Ride . Again, depending on your cruise, these activities may be done in reverse.

Skagway Alaska on a Disney Cruise

Skagway Alaska Street Car Tour

As part of this excursion, guests are ushered from the boat and settled into a renovated street car bus that “tours” the 23 blocks of Skagway’s historic town. On a somewhat quick trip, our guide gave us an overview of the history of certain storefronts, the “garden town” history, and even current information regarding the schools, jobs, and lifestyles you find in Skagway, Alaska. Once finished we disembarked for a bathroom break and headed to the second motorcoach, for a drive up the Klondike Highway.

Klondike Highway Drive and Talk

This stretch of our tour featured an amazing storyteller and previous National Park Ranger, Doug from the Skagway City and Summit Tour team. Sharing stories of Skagway’s claim to fame as the Gateway to the Klondike Gold Rush , there were many stories to tell. From panning for gold to the trails through the White Mountains that would lead fortune seekers to the Canadian border beyond, we learned A LOT on this tour. From the history of Skookum Jim to the trails carved out by George Carmack, the history in this part of the country is hopeful and devastating. Without this excursion, we would not have learned about the lands or the people’s struggles in so much detail, and are truly grateful to have had the experience.

White Pass Railroad Train Ride

Of course, the main reason people take this excursion is the chance to ride the train, that weaves high atop the mountain cliffs of the Yukon. A mainstay in the Skagway area this train offers views of Alaska like no other. Some of the most beautiful countries can be seen from the train. With waterfalls, forests, creeks, lakes, and mountainsides galore, guests are even allowed to withdraw to the open-air platforms at each end of the train to see the views better.

Dog Mush and Helicopter Tour in Skagway

Dog Sledding and Glacier Flightseeing | $629

Available through Disney Cruise Line or for a cheaper price through Temsco which is the same company that does Disney’s Dog Sledding and Glacier Flightseeing Port Excursion. If you book directly you can get this a little cheaper. Guests board a helicopter and are taken to the mountaintops to meet musher dogs, learn about the sleds and take their turn at mushing on their own. A favorite among just about everyone, meeting the dogs, and learning how to mush are experiences you may only get the chance to do in Alaska. This excursion lasts 2 hours 30 min and is the unforgettable experience you’re sure to be writing home about.

Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park Visitor Center

A must-see in Skagway is the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park Visitor Center. This visitor center includes a 3-d map of the Gold Rush trail and details about its most important people. You can also grab your National Park Passport Stamp here too!

  • Things to Do in Skagway
  • Skagway Walking Trail Map

Gold Rush Cemetery

About 2 miles out of town, the Gold Rush Cemetery is near Lower Reid Falls, and this is an easy walk for anyone wanting to see the history and nature of the area. As one of the Free Things to Do in Skagway , this cemetery features the likes of Soapy Smith and Martin Itjen. You can also grab the SMART shuttle to a spot about a 1/2 mile from the cemetery if you’re not walking or renting bikes.

The Red Onion Saloon

A classic saloon, the Red Onion Saloon in Skagway is a major stop for many tourists. Serving up pizza, burgers, salads, beer, and more, this restaurant is first come first serve…and you can expect a line. Our recommendation is don’t go as soon as you arrive. If you wait until later in the day, the crowds will be less heavy. And if you’ve ever wondered what an old-school brothel looks like, there is also a museum at this restaurant upstairs you can access for an extra charge.

Disney Alaska Cruise Food at Skagway

Klondike Doughboy

Wondering if you really need a large piece of dough covered in sugar? Why question it? Of course, you do! A local specialty, Klondike Doughboy of Skagway is a MUST-DO stop in this small town. This little shop includes not only amazing fried dough patties, fried fresh and covered in sugar but also cute souvenirs in their store. A great one-stop shop for your maple syrup. Alaska magnets and ulu knife needs. On a side note, this dough treat is about as big as a dinner plate and costs $7. It is definitely a two-person dessert if you’re not averse to sharing.

Juneau Alaska Disney Cruise Port

Juneau Alaska Cruise Port | Day 5

Port Times: Guests Ashore 6:45 am Guests Onboard at 4:45 pm

As the capital city of Alaska, Juneau is very much a working city with suburbs, forests, activities, and more. And as a Cruise Port city, you can plan on having the amenities pretty close at hand, no matter what excursions you pick. Our Disney Cruise came in at the AJ dock in Juneau, which is typical for the Disney Wonder and is the farthest berth from town, about a 1-mile walk. If you’re taking any morning excursions, they will, however, drop you back in town so that everything is accessible for the rest of your day at Port. Be sure to stop off at the Juneau Visitors Center for a port map, and to ask questions. And there is also a free shuttle to the port when needed. Check out our tour of Juneau Video.

Whales Tour on Disney Cruise to Alaska

Alaska Whales and Rainforest Trails | Disney Excursion $249

If you’re hoping to see whales on your Disney Alaska Cruise, then you’d best book a tour. Through Disney Cruise, we booked the Alaska Whales and Rainforest Trails tour which spanned 5 hours and 15 minutes.  At a cost of $249 per person, this is one of the more involved tours featuring both a rainforest walk in the Tongass National Forest and time on the whale-watching boat, waiting for sightings.

Offered by Gastineua Guiding in Juneau, Alaska we couldn’t be happier with Disney’s selection of tour companies here. For the rainforest portion, they brought us through the forest, and along an Alaskan beach, with beautiful views. And the Whale sightseeing also included seals and scenery of the Mendenhall Glacier. The guides for both parts of our excursion were knowledgeable, friendly, and truly passionate about their work. Sharing details about the plants, trees, and history on the trails, as well as fun facts about the whales. Just like most of the excursions on our Alaska trip, we just wouldn’t have gotten this level of detail or knowledge had we attempted these things on our own. It was such a great experience.

Rainforest Trail Gastineau Guiding Disney Juneau

Nugget Falls and the Mendenhall Glacier

Only 12 miles from the cruise port, if Mendenhall Glacier isn’t included in a tour you’ve booked, it’s easiest and cheapest to just take a taxi there. You can get up close and personal with Nugget Falls, the Mendenhall Glacier, and the trails and beaches they occupy. We did get a glimpse of the Mendenhall Glacier from our Whales excursion, but not as close as if we would’ve just gone separately. Check out the Nugget Falls and Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center and the 1.5-mile loop you can walk while you’re there.

Merchant’s Wharf

Known as the “Blue Building” you’ll find local shops, Frost +Fur, Pel Meni’s, Hearthside Books, seafood restaurants, and Glacier Coffee Co. here. If you’re looking for a place to go that has local specialties, and souvenirs, then this is where you can start.

Frost and Fur Juneau Alaska Shops Disney Cruise Juneau Port Stop

Frost + Fur Novelty Shop

Found at Merchants Wharf, Frost + Fur is a specialty gift shop, featuring handmade screen-printed items, gifts, artwork, and local goods. Truly, one of the BEST shops in Juneau, this place was right up our alley. Offering a beautiful collection of specially curated souvenirs featuring things you’d want from Alaska. Shirts, Alaska tea, Camping Books, Artwork, Stickers, Travel journals, and more, we could have bought the entire store. Thankfully, since we do have luggage limits to consider, you can also find and support them online. Be sure to stop and see them in their shop at Merchants Wharf or shop Frost and Fur online.

Glacier Coffee Co.

Happily located next to Frost + Fur was Glacier Coffee Co. serving up some of the Best Coffee in Juneau we had! And since we get kinda picky with our coffee, that’s saying something. Run by the locals, this coffee shop can whip up whatever you’d like, as they had loads of syrups, sauces, espressos, matcha, teas, and chai. Check out Glacier Coffee Co . and be sure to add them to your list for your Juneau Cruise Port stop.

Russian Dumplings Juneau Alaska Pel Meni

Pel’Meni

Serving Russian Pierogi, Pel Menis is a local favorite and located in Merchant’s Wharf as well, just along the Marine Way edge of the building. Open for lunch and dinner, the offerings on the menu are 2 items only. Potato pelmeni, or beef pelmeni. These doughy, potato-y balls are a bit like dumplings, gnocchi, or pierogi and come topped with curry spices, hot sauce, and chives. Sometimes sour cream is offered, but we didn’t get that option when we visited. This dish is also served with a half piece of soft marbled rye bread. This meal was good for a chilly day in Alaska and was priced right at about $6 or $7 each. Plus, if you’re dealing with picky eaters, you can just get this lunch without the toppings for a cozy buttery pelmeni dish that even kids would love.

Freezing the Night Away Disney Cruise Deck Party

Much like Pirate Night on a Disney Cruise, on an Alaska Cruise, you get to Freeze the Night Away with friends from Frozen. This evening deck party happens between the first and second dinner seatings and includes the entertainment team, Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf. Plan on sing-along songs, dances, and a reason to grab more hot cocoa from the drink station on Deck 9.

Ketchikan Alaska on a Disney Cruise to Alaska

Ketchikan Alaska Cruise Port | Day 6

Port Times: Guests Ashore 11:15 am Guests Onboard 7:45 pm

Unlike Juneau, where some of the port is a little walking distance, the Disney Cruise Port at Ketchikan is right in the middle of town. With everything literally visible from the boat, and extremely walkable. Alaska Cruise Shore Excursions are easy to get to and experience here. Ketchikan features quite a few points of interest including the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, Creek Street, and the Totem Park. For our day in Ketchikan, we booked another rainforest walk, which duplicated much of the info we learned in Juneau. But as the tour also included the Raptor Center and the Totem Park, we were okay with that. As we were in Ketchikan on a Saturday, we were surprised to see that so many shops closed by 4 pm. This is definitely something to consider if you have later excursions and were hoping to visit attractions in town afterward. So be sure to check the hours of anywhere you plan to visit. Check out out Tour of Ketchikan Video.

Totem Park in Ketchikan Alaska

Rainforest Sanctuary and Totem Park | Disney Excursion $149

As part of the Rainforest Sanctuary and Totem Park excursion through Disney guests can experience the Tongass National Rainforest on a light hike, the Raptor Center, and the Totem Park.  This tour is offered by Kawanti Adventures in Ketchikan, Alaska . Spanning about 3 hours this was a fairly decent deal for $149 if you wanted to get an inside look at the forests and learn about the birds and totems. However, there were definitely elements of this tour we would have changed if we had the option or had gone on our own. Included in this tour excursion are the Tongass National Rainforest Walk, The Raptor Sanctuary, and the Totem Park.

Tongass National Rainforest Walk

For this rainforest walk, we took a bus to the Tongass National Rainforest and easily walked on trails throughout while our guide pointed out interesting plants, like Devil’s Club, a local remedy, the Skunk plant, and more. Very knowledgeable, our guide Emily was great! This portion of the trip lasted maybe an hour and took up the most time of all three activities overall.

Raptor Sanctuary Alaska

Once we cleared the Rainforest, we walked over a bridge toward the Alaskan Raptor Sanctuary. This was one of our main reasons for booking this excursion and we wish we would have more time here. Once inside the small open-air porch space, we got to meet three birds that had been rescued. The caretaker shared their individual stories and we got to learn about the Raptor Center’s efforts.

Totem Park Alaska

After the Raptor Center Visit, we walked next door to the Totem Park located at the Herring Bay Lumber Company Sawmill. Claiming fame as the first Tsimshian totem pole park, this was somewhere we would have liked more time to explore. With placards telling the Native American history of each pole, the museum pieces inside the Sawmill, and the gift shop, there was much to do here. Overall we only had about 20 minutes for this last leg of our tour. Definitely, not enough time to check out the mill, all the totems, story plaques, or the general store. We saw several guests grab beverages, and snacks so a little food counter was also available and it would have been nice to spend more time here.

Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show Ketchikan

By far one of the most popular activities to do in Ketchikan, the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show is an excursion you can book with Disney or one you can just grab tickets to on your own. The building where this show takes place is literally about 1 block from the cruise port. This show includes log cutting, climbing, wheelbarrow races, axe throwing, and more to fill the time. A favorite among cruisers, we heard many families back onboard sharing how fun this was. Offering two types of tickets, the Disney Lumberjack Show is a little more expensive, showing on weekends at 4 pm. And it features Disney fun and character appearances. But the regular show is daily at 10 am and 1:30 pm if that works better for your port day. Check out ticket prices and dates on the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show website.

Totem Bright Historical State Park

While we didn’t get to see Totem Bright Historical State Park as part of our excursion, this park was on our list and would be the perfect day trip for your Ketchikan Port day. With budget-friendly tickets at $5 each through the season and free off-season, you can explore at your leisure. Filled with totems and stories, this park also features a Clan House and a history you won’t find elsewhere. Just a 12-minute drive from the port, this place is easy to get to, and the bus to and from town makes the trip hourly.

Creek Street in Ketchikan Alaska

Creek Street Ketchikan Alaska Shopping

Creek Street in Ketchikan was a nice surprise for a stroll and browsing. Featuring several restaurants and shops, this area is very historical and offered a lot of neat details and history about the area. A great place to grab a souvenir, this was a nice one-stop shop for us to get a feeling of Ketchikan. You can even watch the Salmon run here.

Yarn Shop in Ketchikan Fabulous Fiber Arts

Fabulous Fiber Arts Yarn Shop

One of our favorite finds on our Ketchikan day was a charming yarn shop. Featuring amazing yard finds for crafters, the Fabulous Fiber Arts Shop offers hand-dyed yarns, skeins, cashmere, and more for any yarn crafting needs. A staple among locals, this local business offers a knitting group, patterns, and kits to help get you started. Simply some of the best, and most beautiful yarns we’ve seen. Definitely worth a stop if you’re a hobby crafter.

Alaska Crepe Co.

A local favorite for breakfast, lunch, and dinner you can get a variety of crepes here. Serving up crepes both savory and sweet, plan between $10-17 dollars each, depending on what you order. While we didn’t get the chance to go here, it was definitely on our list and one we’d frequent without question as TripAdvisor Reviews are typically fantastic. Check out the Menu ahead of time at Alaska Crepe Co.

Just Dandy Apothecary and Cafe

In our search for coffee, when everywhere else was closed, we happily stumbled upon the  Just Dandy Apothecary and Cafe. Serving up not only specialty coffees, like mochas, London fog teas, and pistachio matcha lattes but also wraps, bowls, and salads, this would have been a great place for lunch. Offering a public restroom, indoor seating, and an open library, this restaurant also had some cute souvenirs. We would definitely visit here again.

Old Ache Novelty Shop

A beautifully curated shop, the local gift shop features home decor items, candles, and more if you’re looking for something more upscale than the typical Alaskan souvenir. This shop is part of the Niblick’s General Store family, which is a mainstay in Ketchikan. Located at 326 Main Street this shop is next door to the Just Dandy Apothecary and Cafe and right up the street from 55 North Bakery and Coffee .

Sockeye Sams Shop

This souvenir shop has almost everything you could ever want in the way of Alaskan souvenirs. Tees, Sweatshirts, Magnets, Ornaments, Local Coffee, Maple Syrup, Devils Club Products, Glassware, you name it. Filled to the brim with Alaskan gift items, there are ample things to see. And of course, as with every port town, there are an ample amount of jewelry counters present too.

Meng and Ging’s Kitchen

There are a variety of Places to Eat in Ketchikan , depending on what you’re in the mood for but in lieu of seafood we decided to find something more to our taste. As such we stumbled upon Meng and Ging’s Kitchen, located within walking distance of the port right on Water Street. Decent food, they serve some of the best Mongolian Beef dishes you’ll try. While vegetarian options were limited, they were able to make egg fried rice which was a nice treat and offer a variety of egg rolls too. If Filipino and Asian food are favorites of yours be sure to stop by Meng and Ging’s Kitchen.

Disney Cruise to Alaska Day at Sea

Disney Alaska Cruise Day at Sea | Day 7

Back on the boat after an activity-filled vacation we settled into all things Disney Cruise; watching movies, playing trivia, trying our hand at a pub quiz, and listening to the piano were all on the docket. We also felt like we needed a break, so booking a Brunch at Palo for our last day at sea was something we had been looking forward to the whole trip. That said, we also wanted to take it easy and just relax, so were looking for ways to do that mostly on the last day.

Palo Restaurant on Disney Wonder

Brunch at Palo | $45 per person

If you want to add something special to your trip, guests over 18 can book brunch or dinner at Palo. As the signature dining experience on Disney Cruise Ships, Palo offers an elegant atmosphere, expansive views of the ocean, and the best food onboard. That said, dining here does cost extra and is Not included in your Disney Cruise . However, this elegant dining experience is completely worth the $45 price tag. With a multi-course offering and the chance to order more of anything ( plus one drink free), the value here is better than even the most basic restaurants we’ve visited at Walt Disney World.

And if you climb to the Castaway Club Ranks of Platinum or Pearl, you get a dining experience at Palo on the house. Brunch here included breakfast foods like eggs and waffles, as well as chicken parmesan, calzones, and pizza. Everything you’d expect to find at an upscale Italian restaurant. Highly Recommended.

towel folding class on disney cruise ship

Disney Cruise Towel Folding Class

One of our favorite classes to take onboard any Disney Cruise is Towel Folding. Mainly because the housekeeping team presents cute towel friends each evening, and we always wonder “how.” If you’re wondering how twisted towels can turn into cute animals that welcome you back to your cruise stateroom each evening, then be sure to check the Disney Navigator for classes throughout your cruise. It’s a fun skill to learn, and perfect for kids and adults alike.

anyoe can cook class on a disney cruise

Anyone Can Cook Class on a Disney Cruise

Another favorite Disney Class for your Day at Sea on a Disney Cruise is the Anyone Can Cook Series. Mostly offered on longer cruises, you may see both an adult-only and a family class offered. For the grown-ups, there’s usually a glass of wine involved. And with dishes to make like Lobster Ravioli and Apple Strudel, you’ll be excited to watch the professional chef onboard explain all the tips and tricks to making the perfect dish. You not only get to taste the creations shared but also get a recipe to take home. Absolutely a must-do class if it’s offered on your cruise.

Tea at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver

Tea at the Fairmont Hotel

With themes that change every few months, Tea at the Fairmont Hotel is well worth discovering. Serving up a High Tea, complete with a tower of savory and sweet things to eat. Each guest can choose a pot of tea, and settle in. Since we’ve been lamenting the pause of Tea at the Garden View Tea Room at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, we thought this one of the best ways to get our fix. And we were not disappointed! The food was fantastic, and they do accommodate vegetarian and vegan needs as well. Check out the current menu and theme for Tea at the Fairmont Vancouver.

Granville Island Vancouver Canada

One of the main attractions in Vancouver is Granville Island. Accessible by road or AquaBus, this place is filled with shops and restaurants to browse during your visit. You can head to the Public Market for a winding array of places to eat, grab a coffee, and buy treats.

Serving up handmade pot pies, pies, quiche, tarts, and croissants. The A La Mode Pie Cafe is a Must-Do on Granville Island. Mind you the line for this restaurant will be long, but it’s worth it. If you’re a fan of flaky pastry in all forms, then be sure to stop by.

Pacifico Pizzeria and Ristorante

If you’re looking for great pizza in Vancouver, then the Pacifico Pizzeria and Ristorante is what you’re looking for. Featuring a variety of pizza pies, in loads of combination flavors, this pizza place offers inside seating, pick-up, and delivery. Since we were staying nearby at The Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver, it was a quick 3-minute walk to pick up our pizza after a hectic day. This restaurant also offered pasta, salads, chicken parm, and more. An excellent place for lunch or dinner.

Breka Bakery and Cafe in Vancouver Canada

Breka Bakery and Cafe Vancouver

As we’re usually on the lookout for croissants and coffee, we just had to stop at Breka Bakery and Cafe during our stay in Vancouver. This place is perfect if you’re looking for Breakfast in Vancouver before your Disney Cruise to Alaska. Home to authentic French pastries, and desserts, you’ll feel like you’re visiting Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie in EPCOT. Heck, maybe even France! The pastries here are just that good. You can also grab breakfast and lunch sandwiches here too. With seating both inside and out, there are a couple of locations in Vancouver. So, if you’re nearby, be sure to stop in and grab something special.

Starbucks Reserve Bar Vancouver

If you’re committed to visiting all the Starbucks Reserve Locations around the World, you’ll be happy to know that Vancouver is home to a Starbucks Reserve Bar . Built on a smaller scale, this coffee shop still offers fantastic coffee, specialty blends and sandwiches, and pastries too. Located at Granville St and Pender, you can even mobile order here. Be sure to add this one to your Starbucks Bucket List.

Disney Alaska Cruise Shore Excursions

You may notice that on this cruise we mixed Disney Alaska Shore Excursions and Self-led excursions based on our likes. That said, you may be wondering a few things about How to Book Disney Port Excursions . Things like, What are the best Alaska Shore Excursions to Book and How Much do Alaska Excursions cost are good questions to ask. Know that even if you don’t purchase excursions you can still get off the boat, wander the towns, and visit the restaurants and shops regardless. So, if you’re wondering how to Save Money on a Disney Alaska Cruise, skipping excursions may be your best bet.

Are Disney Port Adventures Included in Your Disney Cruise Cost?

No. One of the few things Not Included in your Disney Cruise are port excursions. And depending on which you choose, they can add up to a pretty penny.

When Can I Book Disney Alaska Shore Excursions for my Disney Alaska Cruise?

Reservation times for excursion booking are based on your Castaway Club Status, per the below. It’s advisable to have a plan as sometimes the most popular excursions have limited space and sell out.

  • First-Time Guests: 75 days prior to sail date
  • Silver Castaway Club Members: 90 days prior to sail date
  • Gold Castaway Club Members: 105 days prior to sail date
  • Concierge Guests and Platinum Castaway Club Members: 120 days prior to sail date

How Much Do Disney Alaska Cruise Shore Excursions Cost?

Disney Port Adventures in Alaska run the gamut when it comes to cost. Disney Alaska Port Excursions range from $47 per person for the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show to about $5200 for the Misty Fjords by Private Seaplane Tour. That said, we included the costs of the excursions here so you can see what extra we paid on top of our Disney Cruise costs. Check out the Disney Port Adventures List with offered excursions and prices. While your Castaway Club ranking will determine WHEN you can book these excursions, it pays to know ahead of time what options you may have available when your reservation window opens up. That said, after seeing these towns, and their proximity to the port we could have made this trip much cheaper with a few select excursions and more time in town.

Is Booking An Alaska Cruise Excursion Direct Cheaper than Disney?

Yes, almost always. The Helicopter Tour in Skagway in particular we booked through the same company Disney uses. This meant we walked to the helicopter on the nearby helipad, like everyone else. Then just booked a time, and paid directly with the company. This saved us a significant amount. In fact, we’ve included some of the tour company names in this post so that if you’re trying to save money, you can check prices to book directly instead of through Disney.

Are Disney Excursions Necessary on a Disney Alaska Cruise?

That depends. Again, for us, after seeing the ports and experiencing the towns, we probably could have tackled the exploring on our own. Even if it meant hiring some of the tour companies directly. We can definitely say we would have never learned the Gold Rush History, Whale science, Glacier details, Rainforest or Totem Pole information without the excursions. And for us, that is one of our favorite parts about traveling; the stories, the history, and meeting the people. That said if you were to tackle this trip on your own we’d highly recommend booking at least a small guided tour in each town so you get that history. Without it, you’re just experiencing pretty places without context.

Disney Alaska Cruise Tips

An Alaska cruise and land tour comes with the chance to explore new places and experience new things. As such, if you’re embarking on Alaskan Cruise Excursions, hunting for Alaska Cruise Itineraries, or figuring out how to Save Money on a Disney Alaska Cruise , we’ve rounded up the best Alaska Cruise Tips so you can go prepared.

How Much Do You Need in Tips on a Disney Alaska Cruise for Excursions?

Something to Know Before You Go are the best practices around Tips and Tipping on a Disney Cruise. From the train baggage handlers to the hotels to the tour guides at the post, there are plenty of people to tip along the way. And that’s not including the random cab driver or Uber ride. That said, it’s a good idea to gather up some cash, in small denominations, so that you have what you need throughout your vacation for ALL THE PEOPLE giving you this vacation experience.

Train Tips | Baggage Handlers

Plan to have small amounts of cash on hand for anyone who helps you with your luggage while traveling by train. While Amtrak’s Red Cap Baggage Assistance Service is Free , tipping for a job well done is always appreciated. A few dollars per bag is adequate, if you choose to tip.

Airport Tips | Porters

If you’re utilizing porters at the airport for your baggage plan on $2 for the first bag and $1 for each additional bag. Also, consider that if you’re traveling with oversized luggage convention is typically $2 per bag.

Hotel Tips | Maids, Bellman

At the Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver, it is expected that you tip your bellman between $3-$5 per piece of luggage for them to offer your baggage service. And as with any hotel stays you’d also want to tip your maid between $2-$5 per day of stay. Also note, that in Vancouver it is FINE to tip them in American dollars. There is of course an ATM on the first floor of Canada Place if you want to grab Canadian currency, but you will have to go to the concierge desk to make the change needed.

Disney Alaska Cruise on Disney Wonder

Disney Cruise Excursion Tour Guide Tips

The biggest costs you didn’t see coming are the Tips You Need for Disney Port Excursions. Most notably, because the guides on Disney Port Excursions are so fantastic, that you will want to pay them for a job well done. Keep in mind as well, that you may have to consider multiple people to tip on each excursion.

How Many People Do You Tip on a Disney Cruise Excursion?

For example on our White Pass Railroad and Skagway Street Car City Highlight Tour, we had several people to tip.

  • The bus driver of the Street Car
  • The shuttle driver for the Klondike Highway
  • Our train car attendant on the White Pass Railroad
  • Our train conductor on the White Pass Railroad

On our Whales and Rainforest Trails Tour, we also had several people to tip.

  • Our guide on the bus
  • Our hiking guide
  • The captain of the boat

As you can see, you may need more on-hand cash than you realize. While it won’t be necessary to tip everyone, and some people providing insufficient service may not deserve your tip, it’s good to go prepared.

What happens on pirate night.

  • What to Wear for Pirate Night

About the Fireworks

Frequently asked questions, pirate themed dinner.

The party begins with a special pirate dinner in your assigned main dining restaurant. It’s similar to most main dining dinners but with a pirate flair. Servers will be dressed in their pirate-y best as well as many of the cruisers.

You will be handed a menu that looks like a treasure map with such food items like Jolly Rogers Barbecue Rib Salad or Chilled-to-the-Bone Honeydew Melon and Watermelon Soup.

There will most likely be some Caribbean dishes as well such as Tia Dalma's Jerk Chicken and Rum-Soaked Chocolate Cake.

Disney Cruise Pirate Night Dinner

Pirate Night Games & Activities

Pirate night actually starts in the afternoon when most of the regular entertainment shifts to a pirate theme.

disney alaska cruise pirate night

A big hit with the wee lad’s and lassie’s is the Disney Junior Pirate and Princess Dance Party .

You can also get crafty and create your own pirate treasure with the cruise staff.

Later, Captain Mickey and his pirate crew host a Pirate Celebration on deck between the first and second dinners.

Do you like game shows? Then join in the fun at the action packed pirate game show at A Pirate's Life For Me or test your pirate knowledge by participating in pirate trivia.

So much to do!

Stage Shows

There are two pirate-themed stage shows on the pool deck.

The first show, which is more family-friendly and geared towards younger kids, will be between the two dinner seatings - around 7:30pm - and the second show is right before the fireworks which starts at 10:30pm. (Check your daily Navigator for exact times.)

The later show can be scary for some children if they are sensitive to loud noises.

(Don’t get me wrong, both shows are safe for kids of all ages; just be prepared if you have little ones who might be sensitive.)

The Big Highlight: Buccaneer Blast Fireworks

Buccaneer Blast fireworks are one the most anticipated events on a Disney Cruise .

This pyrotechnic spectacular is set to a dramatic score featuring songs from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies.

We go into more detail on this explosive show below including where the best viewing spots are. So keep reading...

Late Night Buffet

Finish off the night with - what else? - more food!

If you’re like me, I get hungry about every two hours when I’m cruisin’ so why not enjoy the late night pirate buffet in Cabanas?

The buffet usually opens around 10:45pm so it will be waiting for you once the fireworks are over. There will be a smorgasbord of food for you to indulge in including giant turkey legs.

What to Wear for Disney Cruise Pirate Night

M any guests will dress up in swashbuckling gear for Pirate Night... but there is absolutely no obligation for guests to dress up at all.

Everyone will receive a free Pirates in the Caribbean bandana to wear if they’d like. It will most likely be left in your cabin or given to you at dinner.

Disney Cruise Pirate Night

Some guests just tie on the provided bandana or put on an eyepatch and call it good. Some will go all out and be in full pirate costumes while others will be somewhere in between.

There really is no right or wrong here. It’s totally up to you!

If you do want to dress up, most people do so to dinner and keep it on for the remainder of the evening. You will see your servers as well as Mickey and Minnie and friends dressed in in their pirate garb too!

Before you start purchasing your costumes for Pirate Night, you need to know that any type of toy sword is prohibited on DCL and will not be allowed on the ship. (Note: I’ve heard that there are approved toy swords for sale in the shops onboard but I haven’t verified that.)

Pirate Night Costume Ideas

N eed some ideas? Well, I’m here to help!

Here are a few ideas to get your creative pirate juices flowing.

Idea #1: Online Costume Ideas

I personally love to shop Amazon because many of their costumes have free returns so if it doesn’t fit or it doesn’t look good on me, I just return it for free and try again.

Shopping without getting out of my pajamas? Uh, yes please!

Just make sure you see “FREE Returns” next to the price. If you see that then you can return that item for any reason and receive a full refund. You won’t even have to pay return shipping fees!

I did notice that Free Returns are harder to find on children’s costumes but on adult costumes it’s quite common.

Idea #2: Shop in Stores

I f it’s near Halloween then hit a Halloween store for costumes. Even better, if it’s the day or week AFTER Halloween you can get costumes on clearance. YES! I love saving money!

You can also check your local dollar store. They typically have a selection of pirate items such as eye patches, pirate hats, etc for cheap.

If you get on the cruise and realize you forgot something, the shops onboard the ship do have select merchandise available.

But if dad forgot his puffy pirate shirt, he’s out of luck. The onboard stock is mostly just for kids.

Idea #3: Get Creative

R ather not spend money on a costume? No problem. You probably have some items in your closet that will do the trick.

Just stick with the colors red, black and white and maybe throw in some stripes. That way you’ll be festive without being in a costume.

Here are some ideas:

  • A white or black off-the-shoulder top or a black/white or red/white striped shirt
  • A black vest
  • A red sash belt
  • A bandana (remember they give you a free bandana on the cruise)
  • Black or red skinny pants, jeans, leggings or skirt
  • Black boots (if they have buckles or cuffs then that’s a plus)
  • Hoop earrings
  • Bangle bracelets
  • Pirate-y necklace (skulls anyone?)
  • Heavy eyeliner 🙂

Idea #4: Keep It Simple

D on’t want to take up precious suitcase space on pirate garb?

Don’t sweat it, matey. Nobody'll make ye walk the plank.

Just throw on an eye patch and the provided bandana and call it good.

If you wanna do a little more, go with a simple Jolly Roger t-shirt like this one . They come in all sizes and colors.

Idea #5: Get Gussied Up at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

I f  you really want to take it to the next level make an appointment for Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique on the day of Pirates Night.

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique transforms into The Pirates League just for the day where kids of all ages (yes, you too, Mom and Dad) are able to get pirate makeovers for an additional fee.

After your transformation you will be sworn in with a sacred pirate oath making you an official member of Captain Jack’s crew!

Space is extremely limited, so be sure to book your appointment early.

How to Book the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique (aka The Pirates League)

Before you embark.

Once you are checked into your cruise, go online and view the My Cruise Activities page. This will show when the themed days and nights are scheduled and allow you to begin booking your Pirates League reservation.

Book While Onboard

Visit or call Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique during business hours. The hours vary so check the Navigator when onboard.

The Pirate League Packages

The following special packages are available only on Pirate Night at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.

Empress Package

  • Shimmering makeup
  • Nail polish
  • Coin necklace

First Mate Package

  • Pirate facial effect (choose from Captain Jack, Captain Hook or Blackbeard)
  • A sword and sheath

Deluxe Maiden Package

  • Everything in Empress Package
  • Your choice of costume: an Empress gown or a T-shirt and tutu

Captain’s Package

  • Everything in First Mate Package
  • Your choice of costume: Jack Sparrow, Captain Hook, or Bony Pirate

PIRATE LEAGUE TRANSFORMATIONS TAKE 45 MINUTES

D isney’s fireworks are spectacular! While the the onboard display isn’t quite as awe-inspiring as the ones at the Disney parks, the Buccaneer Blast is still one of the most anticipated activities on the ship.

Disney was the first cruise line to introduce fireworks on their sailings and is currently the only cruise line offering a fireworks show at sea.

This event is weather permitting but Disney does their best to make sure that it happens whether it’s re-positioning the ship to a better location or rescheduling it for a different night.

Disney’s Fireworks ARE Environmentally Friendly

The best place to view the fireworks on disney cruise.

Fireworks are launched from the starboard side of the ship - slightly aft of midship.

There are several good locations to view the fireworks, so I thought I'd list some of my favorites.

First, some definitions.  If you are facing forward towards the bow (front) of the ship...

  • Port = left side of the ship
  • Starboard = right side of the ship

On Disney Wonder / Disney Magic

Deck 10: starboard side, deck 10: port side -- just be sure you're not behind the funnels which may partially block your view, on disney fantasy / disney dream, deck 12: port side -- against the railing that overlooks the pool/deck stage.

This location lets you watch the pirate show below and still see the fireworks across the ship on the starboard side without having to move. If you end up closer to the outer railing that overlooks the water, be careful that the Aquaduck above you does not obstruct your view.

Deck 12: Starboard Side -- close to the outer railing overlooking the water

You can watch the stage show on the Funnel Vision. Be careful that the Aquaduck above you won’t obstruct your view.

Deck 11: Port Side

Don't sit under Deck 12 on the starboard side or you will have trouble seeing fireworks.

Deck 13: Starboard Side -- forward

This is an adults only area for guests 18 and up. You will not be able to see the pirate show that is on the Deck Stage from this viewing area but you will be able to enjoy the fireworks sitting in a lounger with a cocktail in hand.

If You Have a Starboard Verandah Stateroom...

Will there be a pirate night on my cruise.

Unfortunately, not all DCL itineraries offer a Pirate Night.

Due to environmental laws, the Alaskan itineraries and some European sailings do not have a Pirate Night.

If you are booked on one of these itineraries, make sure to check first before planning for pirate festivities .

Also, Pirate Night festivities don't take place on Disney Marvel Cruise or Star Wars Disney Cruise , as there are other celebrations on those sailings.

Will there be a Pirate Night on my Disney Cruise?

When is Pirate Night?

For specific dates and times, check the Personal Navigator or Disney Cruise Line Navigator mobile app once onboard the ship.

If you want to know what day of your cruise it will be before you get on the ship, call Disney at 800-951-3532 once you are close to your embarkation date.

You can also find out by looking online (once you’ve checked in ) to see when The Pirates League makeovers are available. They will only be available on Pirate Night. So the day you are able to book one of the Pirates League packages is the night you will have your Pirate Night.

You view this on the My Cruise Activities page on the Disney Cruise website .

TRADITIONAL PIRATE NIGHT SCHEDULES (subject to change - your cruise may be different)

  • 4-Night Cruise: Night 3

Disney Cruise Pirate Night Guide: What to Know Before You Go

Disney Cruise Pirate Night Guide

First, congratulations on booking your Disney Cruise! Our entire family has wonderful memories of our time aboard the Disney Fantasy in the Caribbean. Perhaps one of the parts I was least looking forward to was the Disney Cruise Pirate Night. Oh, how wrong I was. Pirate Night ended up being a highlight of our Disney Cruise. Be prepared and get in the spirit with our Pirate Night tips!

Disney Cruise Pirate Night Tips

1. Pack pirate costumes for the entire family

2. Purchase swords for Pirate Night at the gift shop

3. Gather on the deck early for Pirate Night

4. Stay for the show and fireworks

5. End the night with dancing or late night fare

What is Disney Cruise Pirate Night?

A Disney Cruise is chock full of entertainment ranging from Broadway style performances to shows outdoors on the main deck. All of the Disney Cruise Line ships offer a Pirates Night for most of their itineraries aboard the Disney Fantasy, Disney Magic, Disney Dream and Disney Wonder. Check your itinerary to find out when this is and to make sure it is included in your Disney Cruise itinerary.

Pirate Night is one night, well actually, one day that is full of pirate themed entertainment. The culmination of this day is a show and party on the main deck that ends with fireworks. It really is a night of not-to-be-missed swahbucklin’ fun. You’ll even get the chance to catch a glimpse of Captain Jack Sparrow!

What To Know About Disney Cruise Pirate Night Before You Go

Disney Cruise Pirate Night Tip #1; Pack cistumes for the whole family!

Pack Pirate Garb for the Entire Family

What do you wear on pirate night on a disney cruise.

Getting dressed up in costume is not something I am generally a fan of. It is a rare Halloween when my arm gets twisted to put on a standby witch costume. However, in preparation for our Disney Cruise I ordered both kids a pirate costume . I knew that they would want to dress up. There are lots of fun pirate costumes for kids out there. Disney cruise pirate night attire can be anything from a custom Disney pirate shirt to a full costume. We recommend a full pirate costume.

Costume Ideas for Disney Cruise Pirate Night

There are some fun Disney Cruise Pirate Night costume ideas out there. I debated striped shirts or something simple for my husband and I. It would have been easy enough to pull off without spending much money. But he wasn’t a big fan of that idea. So, I did nothing for us. Until the day before departure when we were already packed and ready to go.

That’s when I remembered that our neighbors had been on a Disney Cruise and had talked about getting dressed up for Pirate Night. I texted my neighbor asking if I might be able to borrow her costume. She graciously said, “Of course!” And pulled them out. Both her costume and her husband’s were a one size fits all. She offered up the male costume as well.

Insider Tip: If you want something that isn’t just for a one-time use, buy a red and white striped shirt and pair it with black shorts or pants. Add an inexpensive pirate hat and you are set!

red stripes short, black shorts and a pirate hat for pirate night aboard your disney cruise

Pirate Night arrived aboard the ship. The whole family dressed in costumes for the evening’s show and dinner. Our kids had the best time pretending to be pirates as we walked the ship’s decks. We thought that most of the adults wouldn’t be in costume, but no. The adults not wearing some sort of pirate costume were odd man out.

If you really wanted to go all out you should make the kids (ages 3 or over) appointments at Pirates League at the the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique for a pirate make over.

This is such a fun night. And, the photos of our entire family dressed as pirates is a cherished souvenir from the vacation.

Purchase a sword from the Disney Cruise gift shop for Pirate Night.

Purchase Swords for Pirate Night at the Gift Shop

Everything in the ship’s gift shop is authentic Disney merchandise, so good quality. We were hesitant to pack plastic swords in our luggage. So we planned to make this purchase aboard the ship. Having the swords added to the fun for the kids. They really took on the persona of a pirate. Those swords came home with us and continue to get lots of play at home.

Gather on the Deck Early for Pirate Night

What time is pirate night on a Disney Cruise? You will want to check the itinerary for your specific cruise. But most guests get dressed up before dinner. It is fun to see all the pirates running around the ship. So, I don’t think anytime is to early to start.

There’s really not a bad spot for the Disney Cruise Pirate Night show . But I do think the main deck is better than up on the sides for the fireworks. The upper deck on the left facing the stage may be the best spot to see the fireworks. Regardless, getting there early ensure that you can find a good place to set up.

We took that opportunity to take photos and get lemonade from the soda fountains. Watching all the cast members in costume is fun. Just be aware that if you ask a cast member to take a photo of your family you might later discover a crazy pirate photo like below on your phone later. But if you want to be sure to get photos with the pirates, you can sign up in advance for a character meet. Likely you can find Mickey dressed in his pirate attire, and some other fun characters too such as Captain Hook.

Be forewarned that should you ask a castmember to take a family photo you might get a pirate selfie.

Stay for the Show and Fireworks

If you have younger kids you might even want to try to get them a nap earlier in the day. Out youngest wakes at the crack of dawn regardless of the time zone and was always wiped out by dinner time. The show and fireworks go fairly late. And, it isn’t something you want to have to leave early. Try to rest up for it.

Our five-year old was awestruck as pirates boarded the ship. Fortunately Captain Jack Sparrow was on board to save the day. A pirate rappelling down the ship’s funnel is quite a sight to see. There was plenty of action and it felt as though you were in the midst of the action.

Fireworks aboard a ship at sea are also quite a sight, and special experience.

End the Night with Dancing or Late Night Pirate Themed Dining

If you aren’t exhausted stay for a pirate dance party on the pool deck. Or, check out pirate themed late night fare at Cabana’s. It is surely a night that will create fun memories for your entire family. Enjoy it however feels right to you. We found Pirate Night fun for kids and adults alike.

Liana Moore

Liana Moore is a third-culture kid with a hangover from those days that is a severe case of wanderlust. She is more comfortable driving the cliffs of Amalfi, Italy or the dirt roads of Costa Rica or attempting to decipher the street signs of Osaka, Japan than navigating the theme parks of Disney World. But she loves it all. She doesn't believe a vacation is complete without an adventure. Her husband and kids know well that "adventure" often is code for mishap or challenge and it usually results in a good story. They seek outdoor experiences whether in the mountains, on a beach or in the jungle of a tropical country. Her favorite vacation is... all the ones she hasn't yet taken, as well as those she plans on taking again. And, that list is so, so long. But she continues to extensively explore her home state of Colorado, spends lots of time wandering Texas, California, New Mexico, Costa Rica, Mexico, Norway and has even explored Kazakhstan.

Disney Cruise Pirate Night- Fireworks on Disney Cruise Line Ships

Pirate Night Disney Cruise

Pirate Night is a Pirates themed day on the Disney Cruise Line ships that ends with a spectacular fireworks show! Pirate Night is included on all Disney Cruise ships and is a popular event especially for Pirates of the Caribbean fans.

Pirates Night starts off with Pirates of the Caribbean themed music playing in the ship with Pirate themed character greetings, themed food, games, and of course, the fireworks show. Pirates Night is a fun event for families and many guests get into the spirit with full pirate outfits!

Keep reading for all the details on Pirates Night on the Disney Cruise Line including my recent experience celebrating Pirates Night on the Disney Dream which included special themed characters, a pirate deck show and fireworks! This was a cool event to experience especially to see how dedicated Disney Cruise guests are to celebrating the event.

You can view the currently available dates for Disney Cruise Line in 2024 and 2025 along with full itineraries. After viewing the dates be sure to come back and request a FREE quote from our travel partner for your cruise .  For a limited time Mickey Visit readers get up to a $400 onboard credit.

In this planning guide:

Disney Cruise Line Pirate Night

Pirate Night includes a pirate-themed dinner, show and deck party, fireworks, plus a variety of pirate inspired experiences throughout the day!

You might even see Disney characters dressed in their best pirate gear. But one highlight for many guests will be the chance to meet Jack Sparrow as he is often a big part of Pirate Night on the Disney Cruise!

Jack Sparrow Disney Cruise priate nite

Each guest receives a party bandana but we saw so many guests decked out in full pirate gear- adults and kids alike! Disney Cruisers go all out for themed events. It had us wishing we had more than just the included bandana but it was still a fun touch.

The Pirate Night fun starts with a family game show in the afternoon and many of the activities at the youth clubs will be pirate themed!

Pirate Night Themed Dining

Dinner in your main dining restaurant for the night will be Pirate themed with all the servers dressed in their pirate best and ready to greet you you in their ‘Pirate' accents.

The themed menu resembles a treasure map and options include the Jolly Rogers Barbecue Rib Salad or Pirates Gold-en Pot Stickers or even Chilled-to-the-Bone Honeydew Melon and Watermelon Soup.

Pirates in the Caribbean Deck Party

The Pirates in the Caribbean deck party will include a dance off and singalong with pirates and interactive games. Kids will love this sing along and we saw families really loving this experience.

Teens might not be as impressed by this show as it definitely felt like it was geared towards children 12 and under. My son was a bit antsy during it and wasn't too impressed. But the show does pick up when Jack Sparrow makes an appearance!

Pirate Night Disney Cruise Jack Sparrow

After Jack Sparrow joins the stage, the show does pick up a bit for adults and teens as this is a fan favorite character with many Disney fans.

Pirate Night Fireworks

The Pirates Night show ends with fireworks above the Disney Cruise line ship. Keep in mind that fireworks are weather permitting and could be postponed or cancelled if there are high winds.

During our Pirate Night, there were high winds and our show still took place which surprised me! I think it takes some serious weather to cancel these events which is great news for fans.

You can see the fireworks well from nearly any vantage point on the top deck but those on the upper most level did have the best view. They were also more exposed to the wind and the preference of many guests was to sit on the deck by the stage.

Pirate’s Rockin’ Parlay Party on the Disney Wish

Pirate Night on the Disney Wish is a bit different than the other Disney Cruise ships! This show on the top deck features live music, stunts, special effects, and other surprises.

This show also features Captain Redd, a descendent of the famous red-headed rogue from the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, and her band of Pirates performing famous radio hits along with a rendition of “Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me).”

This show also ends with a fireworks spectacular over the ship underscored by an original arrangement of the soundtrack from the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Pirate Party vs. Pirate Night on Disney Cruise

  • Pirate Party does not include free Pirate bandanas
  • Dining rooms keep their standard menus and serving team is dressed in regular clothes for the restaurant

Overall, the experience and show remains the same unless you are sailing on a 3-Day Disney Cruise on the Disney Wish which has a different Pirate Night stage show.

Pirates Night includes a themed Pirate deck show, fireworks, plus pirate activities throughout the day and character greetings.

Once you board the ship and connect to the Disney Cruise wifi for the Disney Cruise Line app, you will see your itinerary for your cruise which will reveal what night Pirate Night is.

Some groups go all out in full Pirate costumes! But all Disney Cruise guests receive a free Pirates theme bandana.

Most Pirate Nights take place starting at 7:30PM on the ship with fireworks at 11:30PM.

Disney Cruise Pirate Night Guide: Our Top Tips And Everything You Need To Know

If you ask people what activities they enjoyed on a Disney Cruise in the Caribbean, Pirate Night always seems to top the list. At first I wasn’t sure about the Pirate Night hype, but now it is one of my favorite on board activities. Here is our complete guide to Pirate Night with our family-tested tips so you can avoid rookie mistakes on your Disney Cruise Pirate Night.

What Is Disney Cruise Pirate Night?

Select Disney Cruises in the Caribbean have a special event called Pirate Night. This event is a combination of pirate-themed live shows, fireworks, a pirate makeover option, a late night dance party with full buffet, and special character meet and greets.

For the cruises from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas and Castaway Cay we’ve always enjoyed pirate night on our Nassau port day. Check your exact cruise itinerary to know which night is your scheduled Disney Cruise Pirate Night.

The party officially starts around 7:30PM with Pirate Games, but you can get into the pirate spirit much earlier than that with a makeover at Pirates League starting in the late afternoon.

Pirates League

What is pirates league.

Disney Cruise Pirate Night is a special event on cruises to the Caribbean. Here is our complete guide to Pirate Night and best tips to make it extra fun.

You have probably heard of Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique for princess makeovers, but did you know on Disney Cruise Pirate Night you can get pirate makeovers? These pirate makeovers start on the afternoon of Pirate Night when Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is taken over by rogue pirates and turned into the Pirates League.

Pirates League is for those age 3 years and older. In fact, there is no upper age limit at Pirates League. We mostly see kids, but some full families have gotten pirate makeovers for the night.

The Pirates League makeover options are make-up only or make-up plus a costume. Either choice will provide your pirate-in-training some keepsake goodies. There are 3 makeover options for the boys which feature different beards and make-up. For girls there is only one pirate makeover choice.

We’ve always opted to bring our own costume from home because there was only one option for a girl’s pirate costume. However, on our most recent trip I did notice they had a second costume option for girls. It wasn’t actually a costume, but a cute pirate themed t-shirt and tutu set.

Pirates League Makeover Experience

When entering Pirates League don’t expect a polite welcome, but that’s part of the fun. The pirates take the job very seriously and expect you to have the right swagger to join their crew. Their first task is to get you a new pirate name. You roll dice and the numbers decide what your new name will be.

Then the next available pirate calls you to their chair. Here you will choose exactly which make-up option you would like. There are some additional choices to be made during the princess pirate makeover such as eye shadow, blush, nail polish, and lipgloss color.

During the entire makeover your pirate stays in character and makes a big show of getting you ready to join the crew. Once you look the part you take the pirate oath. This oath binds you to the pirate crew.

The take home goodies from Pirates League, other than a costume if you choose that option, are a sword, a special bandanna, your pirate oath with new name, a medallion necklace, and an eye patch. For the pirate princess makeover you also get to keep the nail polish and lip gloss.

If you ask Elizabeth her favorite Pirate Night activity her answer is an emphatic “makeovers at Pirates League”, but really that  is just the beginning of the Disney Cruise Pirate Night fun.

Disney Cruise Pirate Night Events

Pirate Night on Disney Cruise Line encompasses several events. There are pirate character meet and greets, two live stage shows, fireworks, a dance party, and special late night buffet.

Special Pirate Character Meet And Greets

On Disney Cruise Pirate Night several characters get a pirate makeover. For example, Mickey meets guests in his full pirate outfit.

You can also meet some other special pirates like Captain Hook, Smee, or Captain Jack Sparrow. Please note that the wait times for these special character meet and greets can sometimes get long.

Pirates In The Caribbean

Disney Cruise Pirate Night is a special event on cruises to the Caribbean. Here is our complete guide to Pirate Night and best tips to make it extra fun. #disneycruise #piratenight #disney #familytravel

The first live show of the night is Mickey’s Pirates in the Caribbean.  This show usually begins at 7:45pm right after first seating for dinner is done.  The show takes place on the stage in front of Funnel Vision on the pool deck.

Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and Daisy are a pirate crew looking for new recruits – you! They train you on the most important lessons a pirate needs to know with a mix of songs and activities.

After your lesson, Captain Hook and Smee take over Mickey’s ship with their pirate crew. For Mickey to regain control of the ship the audience needs to answer Smee and Hook’s tough pirate questions.

After Mickey’s Pirates in the Caribbean there is a short lull in activities while second dining takes place. This is a time you can try to meet those special characters or catch a show.

Buccaneer Blast

After second seating dinner has ended the next live show begins around 10:15pm. This show also takes place on the pool deck in front of Funnel Vision.

The live show has a pirate crew, including Captain Jack Sparrow, improvising silly songs with the help of the audience. The show is fun, but I don’t think it is as good as Mickey’s Pirates in the Caribbean. After the live show it is time for fireworks.

Disney Cruise Pirate Night is a special event on cruises to the Caribbean. Here is our complete guide to Pirate Night and best tips to make it extra fun. #disneycruise #piratenight #disney #familytravel

For me the highlight of Buccaneer Blast is the fireworks. Seeing fireworks launched from the ship over the ocean was such an impressive sight.

Club Pirate

After the fireworks a DJ takes over the stage in front of Funnel Vision. They play a variety of family friendly dance favorites. I enjoyed dancing and being silly with Elizabeth and lots of families were on the dance floor living it up.

Pirate Night Buffet

Disney Cruise Pirate Night is a special event on cruises to the Caribbean. Here is our complete guide to Pirate Night and best tips to make it extra fun. #disneycruise #piratenight #disney #familytravel

Cabanas buffet reopens with a full special Pirate Night buffet during Club Pirate. We were still stuffed from dinner, but others were indulging on the late night meal. I loved looking at the pirate themed watermelon carvings and other pirate decor in the buffet line.

Are Costumes Required On Pirate Night?

Disney Cruise Pirate Night is a special event on cruises to the Caribbean. Here is our complete guide to Pirate Night and best tips to make it extra fun. #disneycruise #piratenight #disney #familytravel

The quick answer is “no”. This was my biggest concern about Disney Cruise Pirate Night on our first Disney Cruise . I am not really a costume person, but didn’t know if I would feel left out without one. I opted to wear regular clothes our first Pirate Night, and although it was fine I did wish I had done a little something pirate inspired.

I still don’t wear a pirate costume, but I do opt for a pirate inspired look with regular clothes. On our most recent trip I used black jeans, black booties, a necklace and bracelets I already owned. I added a striped T-shirt and big hoop earrings from Target and ordered an inexpensive red scarf from Amazon that I used as a sash. This allowed me to participate in our Disney Cruise Pirate Night, but in a way I felt comfortable.

If you are a costume person then go for it. There are lots of people in full pirate gear and make-up and it is awesome. I especially love to see when full families get into the costume spirit. My only rule is do the level of pirate night costume you are comfortable doing.

My Tips For Disney Cruise Pirate Night

Schedule your pirate league makeover early in the afternoon.

Pirates League makeovers cost money and I think that the earlier you get the makeover the more time you have to enjoy it. Scheduling your appointment near the opening time of Pirates League is especially important if your have first dinner. Otherwise you may have to miss out on part or all of dinner to get your makeover done.

Make Your Pirates League Appointment Before Your Trip

Don’t wait until you are on the ship to schedule Pirates League. Instead book it online when you are choosing your other cruise activities such as scheduled character meet and greets , spa treatments, or excursions. Scheduling ahead of time gives you the largest number of appointment time options.

Set Up Early For The Best Views Of Mickey’s Pirates in the Caribbean Show

Unlike setting up for a Disney parade you don’t have to arrive that early to secure a good viewing spot. At 7:30pm we were still able to grab off-center seats pretty close to the stage for Mickey’s Pirates in the Caribbean. I really like this show and enjoy being close to the action.

Pick Your Fireworks Viewing Spot Carefully

Disney Cruise Pirate Night is a special event on cruises to the Caribbean. Here is our complete guide to Pirate Night and best tips to make it extra fun. #disneycruise #piratenight #disney #familytravel

We were running late to Buccaneer Blast after second seating dinner on our most recent trip. I rushed upstairs and grabbed a good spot to watch the live show on the starboard side of the stage, but I forgot all about the firework viewing.

The fireworks are launched over the starboard side of the ship. For those who don’t speak boat that means on the right side of the ship if you are facing front. We were able to see the fireworks, but had a obstructed view because of the AquaDuck tubing.

For the best fireworks view grab a spot on the port side of the boat. The best pirate night fireworks viewing spot is probably port side on the upper deck, but then the view of the live show isn’t as good. Just remember to pick port side (left side of boat when facing forward) and you’ll be in good shape for fireworks viewing.

I think this is the most important part of a Disney Cruise Pirate Night. People are generally in a good mood and have a lot of fun on Pirate Night. Do what makes you feel comfortable with costume and make-up. The main thing is to just go out and have a great time with these special activities.

Don’t Over-Do Pirate Night

My only words of caution are this: if you want to be off the boat early the next morning, don’t stay out partying too late. We always see parents and kids struggling on the morning after Pirate Night. And generally the entire port day after can be a challenge if everyone is tired. Know yourself and your family to choose the right level of Pirate Night party for you.

Final Thoughts On Disney Cruise Pirate Night

I think the reason people love Pirate Night so much is that it is a chance for everyone to be a bit of a kid for the night. People are in a good mood and the feeling of fun is infectious. The live shows, fireworks, Club Pirate, and late night buffet keep the Pirate Night fun going for hours. I really enjoy this special Disney Cruise event on our Caribbean cruises and I hope you do, too!

Disney Cruise Formal Night Ultimate Guide

Sharing is caring!

Want to know what to wear on a Disney Cruise Formal Night?

All you questions about Formal Night on a Disney Cruise are answered here so you know exactly what to expect!

When Is Formal Night on a Disney Cruise?

Disney Cruise Formal Night

There is a lot of confusion amongst first time Disney cruisers about whether or not there is a Formal Night on their sailing.

If we are talking about the formal night with the Captain’s Gala Dinner this only happens on cruises of 7 nights or more. This is the “proper” formal night on a Disney Cruise.

Don’t worry! This doesn’t mean that you can’t dress up for dinner every night if you really want to.

disneywondercruiselobby

What is means is that if you are looking for a true Formal Night, where you can meet the Captain, Disney characters will be in formal wear and that the photographers will all be set up for formal photos, you are only going to get this on the cruises of 7 nights or more.

Here is how the nights will be allocated on your cruise according to how many nights you are sailing.

3-night cruises:

  • One cruise casual night
  • One Pirate Night themed deck party
  • One optional “dress-up night”—jacket for men, dress or pantsuit for women

On cruise casual nights you are not expect4ed to dress up, but you are not permitted to wear swimwear or tank tops in any of the rotational dining rooms.

The cruise casual rule is partly to help the situation if you haven’t yet got your luggage before you go to dinner. This isn’t very likely as usually you do have your luggage delivered to your stateroom by 4 pm at the latest, but it does happen.

disneywondertritonsrestaurant

4-night cruises:

  • The first night is cruise casual
  • One optional dress-up night—jacket for men, dress or pantsuit for women
  • The final night is cruise casual—no swimwear or tank tops

7-night cruises:

  • One Pirate Night or other themed deck parties – for instance, it will be Frozen on Alaskan cruises.
  • 3 additional cruise casual nights—no swimwear or tank tops
  • One formal and one semi-formal night—both give you the opportunity to dress up and take advantage of the onboard photographers.
  • Though optional, Disney recommends dress pants with a jacket or a suit for men and dress or pantsuit for women.

On a 7 Night Cruise, Formal Night will usually be on the first full day of sailing. For instance, if your cruise leaves port on a Saturday, the Formal Night will be on a Sunday.

Disney Cruise Captain’s Welcome Reception

One of the great things about Formal Night is that Mickie and Minnie, along with some of the other Disney characters, will be in formal dress.

This is one of my favorite dresses for Minnie Mouse and of course, it is always great to see Mickey in his tux.

disney alaska cruise pirate night

On Disney Cruises of 7 nights or more, there will be a Captain’s Welcome Reception on Formal Night. This is one of the highlights of a Disney Cruise.

This is a great chance to meet the Captain and the Ship’s officers who will be available for a meet and greet in the atrium of your Disney ship.

There will be a cocktail reception in the lobby atrium of your Disney Ship. There are free alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks available. Servers circle around the atrium with a selection of drinks on trays.

There will be two Captain’s Welcome Receptions on Formal Night for your Disney Cruise. This is to fit in with the two dinner seatings for the rotational dining restaurants.

Usually the Captain’s Welcome Reception starts at 5.15 and 7.30. This means you can go to the Reception and still be on time for dinner.

Disney Cruise Formal Night Menu

There is a special Captain’s Gala Night Menu which will be served in each of the rotational dining restaurants on your cruise.

Disney Cruise Captain Gala Menu

There really is so much that is very good about the Captain’s Gala Menu.

This is one of those nights when it is very difficult to choose what to order as there is so much that is really exceptional.

On our last cruise, DH started with the Aged Prosciutto. He said that this measured up really well against the prosciutto that you get on the Palo Dinner Menu.

Disney Captain Gala menu

The Oxtail Soup was also very good. Soups tend not to photograph well as often they have been carried a long way from the kitchen and have moved around quite a bit in the bowl.

Not always great presentation but it is understandable if you are carrying this will so many other dishes! Doesn’t affec the great taste!

Disney Cruise Formal Night Soup

Whatever there is with Shrimp on it on the menu I always order it. The accompanying salad and dressing were really tasty too.

Disney Cruise Captains Menu Appetizer

This Oven Baked Salmon is on the menu of every rotational dining restaurant each day in the Lighter Offerings Section.

Disney Cruise Captains Menu Salmon

The highlight of the Captain’s Gala Dinner on a Disney Cruise is that this s the time that you get lobster on the menu in any of the rotational dining restaurants.

Disney Cruise Formal Night Lobster

This is what happens when you mention to your Server that you really enjoy Lobster! She brought out two for each of us who wanted it. We actually had to stop her from bringing out even more!

Disney Cruise formal night menu lobster

This really is for me one of the highlights of the food on a Disney Cruise. I never have lobster on land so this is a real treat for me.

Disney Cruise Formal Night Lobster

If you enjoy fish, this Roasted Red Snapper dish is also very good.

formal night roasted red snapper

Every menu has some specialty cocktails to go with that specific dinner. You can of course order anything from the bar menu. Or if you have bought the Wine Package you can enjoy that too.

disney cruise captain gala menu drinks

After all of that lobster there was of course still room for dessert!

Captains Gala Dessert Menu

You really do have to order the Chocolate Lava Cake. Never fails to impress. It is very rich but the ice cream balances it out.

disneycruiseformal night dessert

The Creme Brulee is another favorite. You can also ask for Gluten Free Madelines.

Cruise Formal Night Dress Ideas

The key really is just to feel comfortable with your choice of what to wear on formal night on a Disney Cruise.

You will see a very great range of different attire on formal night. This will range from people who do not get dressed up at all and those who are wearing full length gowns and tuxedos. The choice really is yours.

Most people will have dressed up to some extent, but the majority is unlikely to be in full evening dress.

Personally I really enjoy the chance to get dressed up. There aren’t that many opportunities to do this often on land, so this is something I look forward to. DH would certainly wear a suit, although not a tuxedo.

disney alaska cruise pirate night

This very versatile Mermaid evening cocktail dress (yes you can channel your inner Disney Princess Ariel), is very reasonably priced.

This dress is made of stretchy material so ideal for when you have maybe had one dessert or entree too many!

It is available in lots of different colors including classic black. Sizes available range from Small to XL.

This Long Beaded V-Neck Dress With Cap Sleeves and Waistband reminds me of a beautiful dress that the Duchess of Cambridge wore! This one will certainly make you feel like a Princess on cruise formal night.

disney alaska cruise pirate night

This vintage style Tea Dress is also a great style for formal night.

Not quite as dressed up as a full length gown, but this is a dress that you can wear for lots of different occasions. There is even a red polka dot version if you want to pay homage to Minnie Mouse!

Check Current Pricing on Amazon

disney alaska cruise pirate night

Of course it doesn’t have to be a dress for formal night. A pant suit is also a great option.

Cruise Formal Night Photos

One reason why you may want to get dressed up for your Disney Cruise formal night is that this is a great chance to have some photos taken.

You can always take your own photos, but many people like to take advantage of the Disney Cruise Ship photographers. They have many different formal and not-so-formal backgrounds set up to take some great photos.

If you want to know more about the different photography packages and prices you can see our ultimate guide at the Disney Cruise Photography Package

Formal night is a great opportunity to have your photo taken with the Captain. Or maybe even Captain Minnie and Captain Mickey! Whichever one you pick. do budget for some extra time, as the lines can get quite long.

Disney Cruise Formal Night Entertainment

waltdisneytheatredisneycruise

Not only do you get the chance to dress up, meet the Captain, get some great photos and eat some wonderful food, you also have an evening of fabulous entertainment to look forward to.

On formal night the show is different according to which ship you are on.

I think the best show for formal night is on the Disney Wonder . This is probably my favorite Disney Cruise show of all – The Golden Mickey’s.

disneywonderwaltdisneytheatre

It is particularly suitable for formal night as it has an Academy Award style Red Carpet Arrivals show prior to the performance and a Golden Mickey’s After Party after both performances. This carries on the more formal dressing up theme of the evening just that bit longer.

On the Disney Fantasy the show for formal night is usually Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular. On the Disney Magic it is Twice Charmed – An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story.

Formal Night on a Disney Cruise – Final Thoughts

Disney Cruise Formal Night Atrium Lobby

I know that sometimes the concept of a formal night can seem a bit intimidating to some guests. It really shouldn’t. Even if you live the rest of your life in jeans and a Mickey shirt, this doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy formal night.

Disney cruise lines wants everyone to have a good time. You are going to have a great time no matter what you wear. If you want to dress up this is such a great opportunity to do that. If you want to keep it smart but casual you are going to have a great time too.

There is so much going on to entertain you on Formal Night on a Disney Cruise Ship. Meet the Captain, watch a wonderful show, get some great photos and enjoy the wonderful dinner menu.

There are countless options, ranging from bandanas to pirate outfits, eye patches to tricorn hats. Disney even supplies pirate bandanas in your stateroom, but the experience might be more realistic and enjoyable if you bring your own costumes.
  • Halfway through the cruise is usually Pirate Night, so make sure to check the daily agenda ahead of time to find out the location and timing of the pirate-themed activities . This will enable you to schedule your day appropriately and guarantee that you don't skip any of the celebrations.
  • There are a lot of activities with a pirate theme for visitors of all ages to enjoy during the day and evening. Deck parties, treasure hunts, kid-focused pirate makeovers at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, and trivia competitions are a few examples of these. Engaging in these activities enhances Pirate Night's overall excitement.
  • The deck party and fireworks at sea are, without a doubt, the highlights of Pirate Night. As the event gets closer to its start, arrive early to guarantee a prime spot on deck. Live music, dancing, and appearances by beloved Disney characters decked up as pirates are all part of the deck party festivities. It's not worth missing the amazing fireworks show.

  • Remember to take a lot of pictures to preserve the memories of Pirate Night. Throughout the evening, Disney Cruise Line photographers will be available to take official pictures of you and your family during the deck party, dressed as pirates and with characters. These pictures are excellent mementos of your pirate journey.
  • There’s generally a boisterous pirate dance party on deck before the pyrotechnics. Take part in the excitement as Disney characters lead guests in energetic dances and interactive shows. It's a fantastic way to let go and feel like a pirate.
  • Consider watching Disney's " Pirates of the Caribbean " films before your cruise to get into the spirit of Pirate Night. These movies will make you appreciate the themed events onboard even more since they perfectly capture the spirit of a daring journey.
  • Disney does provide some pirate bandanas, but you can have a better time if you bring your pirate gear from home. To increase the fun factor, consider bringing props like toy swords, binoculars, or treasure maps.
  • Pirate Night frequently lasts until late at night, with the deck party being followed by fireworks and perhaps more entertainment. Allow the kids to remain up a bit later than normal so they can enjoy all the excitement.

Pirate Night usually takes place on one of the evenings during your Disney cruise, and it’s a themed event where guests of all ages are encouraged to dress up like pirates. It’s a chance to let your imagination run wild and step into the world of buccaneers, treasure hunts, and high-sea escapades.

Whether you’re a seasoned pirate enthusiast or new to the pirate life, Pirate Night offers an opportunity to channel your inner Jack Sparrow or Captain Hook. From the moment you step onboard the ship, you’ll be greeted by the crew’s pirate-themed decorations and activities that set the stage for an unforgettable night.

So, get ready to join in the swashbuckling fun as we explore the exciting world of Pirate Night on a Disney cruise!

Choosing the Right Attire

When it comes to choosing the right attire for Pirate Night, the key is to embrace your inner pirate while still being comfortable. You can go all out with a full pirate costume or opt for a more subtle pirate-inspired look. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect outfit:

  • Pirate-themed Clothing: Look for shirts, dresses, or pants with pirate motifs such as skulls and crossbones, anchors, or nautical stripes. These items will instantly give you a pirate vibe without the need for a full costume.
  • Layering: Depending on the weather, you can layer your outfit with a pirate-themed vest, bandana, or sash to add depth and authenticity to your look.
  • Accessorize: Don’t forget to accessorize with pirate-inspired jewelry such as rings, necklaces, or earrings. A pirate hat or bandana, eye patch, and a sword or pistol prop can also add a playful touch to your ensemble.
  • Footwear: Opt for comfortable shoes for walking around the ship, but you can also consider wearing pirate-style boots or sandals to complete your pirate look.

Remember, the key is to have fun and express your creativity! Whether you create your own costume or purchase pirate-themed clothing, the options are endless. Just make sure you’re comfortable enough to enjoy all the exciting activities planned for Pirate Night.

It’s important to note that Disney Cruise Line has guidelines on appropriate attire, and costumes resembling Disney characters are not allowed for adults. However, you can still incorporate elements of your favorite Disney pirate characters into your outfit, such as a Captain Jack Sparrow-inspired bandana or a Captain Hook-themed accessory.

So, get ready to dress to impress and join the swashbuckling crew as you set sail on an unforgettable night of pirate-themed fun during Pirate Night on a Disney cruise!

Pirate Accessories

No pirate ensemble is complete without the right accessories. They add the perfect finishing touch to your Pirate Night outfit, making you look like you’ve just stepped off a pirate ship. Here are some must-have pirate accessories to consider:

  • Pirate Hat: A pirate hat is an iconic accessory that instantly screams “pirate.” Choose a hat adorned with feathers, skull and crossbones, or other pirate-themed embellishments.
  • Bandana: A bandana tied around your head adds an authentic touch to your pirate look. You can wear it in various ways, whether it’s covering your whole head, tied around your forehead, or hanging loose at the back.
  • Eye Patch: Complete your pirate transformation with an eye patch. Wear it over one eye for an air of mystery and adventure.
  • Necklaces and Jewelry: Add some pirate flair with necklaces featuring pirate coins, anchors, or compass pendants. Don’t forget to include some skull and crossbones motifs for a true pirate touch.
  • Pirate Belt or Sash: Wrap a pirate belt or sash around your waist to give your outfit a more rugged, seafaring look. It’s not only stylish but can also hold small essentials like a compass or a small pouch for treasure.
  • Pirate Boots: Complete your pirate ensemble with a pair of sturdy pirate boots. Look for boots with weathered or buckle details to add authenticity to your outfit.
  • Pirate Props: Enhance your pirate look with props such as a toy sword, peg leg, or a faux hook hand. These accessories not only add an element of fun but can also be great conversation starters.

Remember, the accessories you choose will depend on your personal style and how much you want to embrace the pirate theme. Mix and match different items to create a unique and individualized pirate look that stands out on Pirate Night!

Disney Cruise Line offers a variety of pirate-themed merchandise onboard, including hats, bandanas, and other accessories. You can also consider bringing some of your own accessories from home to add a personalized touch to your pirate ensemble.

With the right accessories, you’ll be ready to set sail and embrace the thrilling world of pirates during the Pirate Night on a Disney cruise!

Dressing the Kids for Pirate Night

One of the highlights of Pirate Night on a Disney cruise is seeing the little ones transform into adorable pirates. Whether they dream of sailing the high seas or searching for buried treasure, dressing up for Pirate Night is a chance for them to let their imaginations run wild. Here are some ideas for dressing the kids for Pirate Night:

  • Pirate Costumes: Consider getting your child a complete pirate costume. These costumes often include a shirt, pants or skirt, and accessories like a pirate hat, eye patch, and prop sword. They’ll feel like a true pirate ready for adventure.
  • Pirate-themed Clothing: If you prefer a more casual approach, look for pirate-themed t-shirts, dresses, or shorts for your little swashbucklers. These items usually feature pirate illustrations or phrases and can be paired with simple accessories like bandanas or eye patches.
  • DIY Costumes: Get creative and make your own pirate costumes for the kids. Raid the dress-up bin or visit a thrift store for items like oversized shirts, vests, or flowy skirts that can be transformed into pirate attire. Let your kids help with the creation process to make it even more special.
  • Face Paint and Temporary Tattoos: Take your child’s pirate look to the next level with face paint or temporary tattoos. Draw on a rugged beard, scars, or even a pirate-themed design on their cheek. Just make sure to use child-safe face paint and apply it before leaving your stateroom.
  • Pirate Accessories: Don’t forget to complete their pirate look with accessories like pirate hats, bandanas, belts, and eye patches. These simple additions can transform an ordinary outfit into a full-fledged pirate ensemble.

Remember to choose clothing and accessories that are comfortable and safe for your kids to wear throughout the evening. It’s also a good idea to label their belongings to avoid mix-ups with other pirate crew members.

Pirate Night is an exciting opportunity for kids to fully immerse themselves in the pirate experience. As they dress up and participate in the onboard festivities, they’ll create lifelong memories of their unique pirate adventure on a Disney cruise.

Makeup and Face Painting

Makeup and face painting are fantastic ways to enhance your pirate look and bring it to life. Whether you want to create a rugged buccaneer or a glamorous pirate queen, here are some tips for incorporating makeup and face painting into your Pirate Night ensemble:

  • Pirate Face Paint: Give yourself or your little ones a pirate makeover with face paint. Use black, brown, and white face paints to create a rugged beard, scars, eye patches, or skull and crossbones designs. Remember to use hypoallergenic face paints and test them on a small patch of skin beforehand.
  • Eye Makeup: Emphasize your eyes with dark eyeliner and eyeshadow. Smudge the eyeliner for a smoky, intense look, or create a dramatic cat-eye effect. Consider using gold or bronze eyeshadow to enhance the pirate-themed colors in your outfit.
  • Lip Color: Choose a bold lip color to make a statement. Classic red or deep burgundy shades are perfect for achieving that rugged pirate look, while a shimmering gold or silver gloss can add a touch of glamour.
  • Glitter and Gems: Add some sparkle to your pirate ensemble with the help of glitter and stick-on gems. Apply them to your face, around your eyes, or even on your shoulders to create a dazzling effect.
  • Temporary Tattoos: Temporary tattoos can be a fun and easy way to incorporate pirate-themed designs into your look. Apply them to your arms, hands, or even your face for a unique touch.

If you’re not confident in your makeup or face painting skills, consider booking a pirate makeover experience on the ship. These experiences, usually offered in the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or the Pirate’s League, allow professionals to transform you into a pirate with their expert skills.

Remember to pack some makeup remover wipes or cleanser to easily remove the makeup at the end of the night. Taking care of your skin is just as important as looking like a pirate!

With the right makeup and face painting techniques, you’ll be able to add an extra layer of authenticity and creativity to your Pirate Night look on a Disney cruise.

9.2. Earrings and Necklaces

No pirate outfit is complete without some jewelry to add a touch of glimmer and shine. Opt for hoop earrings, skull-shaped earrings, or even dangling anchors to complement your pirate attire. Disney Magic Cruise Pirate Night — Everything You Need to Know

By Wendy Leave a Comment

If you’re going on a Disney Cruise , there’s something you should be warned about…

disney alaska cruise pirate night

Captain Hook and Mr. Smee on the Disney Magic

Or maybe I should put it this way: BE YE WARNED , me hearties, because your ship — specifically, the Disney Magic — may be taken over by PIRATES, and they’ll want YOU to join their crew! So we’re here to walk you through EVERYTHING you need to know about Pirate Night on the Disney Magic so YOU don’t walk the plank!

Pirates IN the Caribbean Deck Party

On Disney Cruise Line, Pirate Night can vary from ship to ship. For instance, on the new Disney Wish , passengers experience the Pirates Rockin’ Parlay Party .  Here on the Disney Magic… well, you’ve heard of Pirates of the Caribbean, right? The highlight of Pirate Night on Disney’s first ship to ever set sail is the Pirates IN the Caribbean Deck Party !

disney alaska cruise pirate night

Pirate Night

You’ll gather with your fellow pirates on the pool deck for a nighttime party like no other. Disney pals and crew will entertain you with a show and teach YOU how to party like a pirate! But beware…

They may be joined onstage by some uninvited scoundrels and scallywags! From this point… well, I don’t want to spoil things. Let’s just say that someone very special just may show up to save the night.

The entire thing is capped off by something Disney Cruise Line is known for: FIREWORKS AT SEA !

Also, be aware that Pirate Night is part of select sailings, so check your itinerary on the Disney Cruise Line website, or with help from your Travel Agent .

Disney Characters and Costumes

The fun starts even before the sun sets on Pirate Night! As the ship prepares for the party, Disney characters prepare in their own way… by donning their best PIRATE COSTUMES so you can get a hug and have your photo taken with the cutest band of pirates you ever did see.

You see, passengers are likewise encouraged to dress for the occasion ! And you won’t believe how many guests go ALL OUT for the big night.

Didn’t pack any pirate garb? That’s ok, matey! Disney Cruise Line has you covered, as every guest on the ship receives their very own Pirates in the Caribbean bandana to fit right in. (If you really won’t feel like your look is complete without an eye patch, though… you’re on your own.)

Pirate Eats

Of course, a pirate’s gotta eat to be ready to party, so Pirate Night features a special menu for dinner at each of the Main Dining restaurants .

Rapunzel’s Royal Table

On the Disney Magic, these are Rapunzel’s Royal Table, Lumiere’s , and Animator’s Palate . But don’t you fret… no matter where you are dining on Pirate Night in Disney Cruise Line’s signature Rotational Dining , the special Pirate Night menu will be served.

6 best Alaska cruises for families

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Adorable sled dog puppies, graceful whales, fascinating totem poles, crazy lumberjacks, majestic glaciers — Alaska has much to offer families of all ages. But if you’re looking for the best Alaska cruise for kids, which ship should you choose?

Families have great choices when sailing up north, including a ship full of Disney characters, one with laser tag and a go-kart race track and many with expansive play spaces for kids, waterslides and family-focused onboard activities. Look for bigger ships with plenty of amusements; smaller and older ships might not have as many kid-friendly attractions.

I’m not mentioning luxury cruise ships here because they are geared for adults, but families looking for a more upscale, smaller-ship cruise to Alaska should know that many high-end lines will put on some kid programming during summer-break cruises to Alaska with a higher-than-usual number of children on board.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

If you’re ready to cross Alaska off your bucket list, here are our recommendations for the best Alaska cruises for families.

7-night Alaska Adventure cruise on Quantum of the Seas

The 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas is not one of Royal Caribbean ’s largest-in-the-world Oasis Class ships that boast zip lines, ice skating rinks and AquaTheaters. But it still offers a great mix of activities, including a skydiving simulator, high-tech theater with robotic “dancing” screens, an escape room, indoor basketball court/bumper car pavilion and dedicated spaces for both kids and adults.

Kids can gobble up hot dogs and pizza at themed eateries, while adults can enjoy date night at Wonderland with its imaginative molecular gastronomy or Jamie’s Italian, created by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

Seven-night Alaska cruises sail round-trip from the easily accessible port of Seattle and visit Sitka, Skagway and Juneau, Alaska; as well as Victoria, British Columbia. One day is spent cruising through the scenic Endicott Arm to Dawes Glacier. Sailings depart between late April and September.

7-night Alaska cruise on Disney Wonder

Disney Cruise Line ‘s 1,754-passenger Disney Wonder (which can carry 2,713 guests when completely full) is the perfect size ship for a family cruise to Alaska. It’s smaller than many of the megaships catering to families in this part of the world, so guests can view glaciers and enjoy shore excursions without feeling too crowded.

The ship is full of Disney magic — photo ops with Mickey and friends and Disney princesses, restaurants themed to “The Little Mermaid” and “The Princess and the Frog” and a musical stage show of “Frozen.”

Cabins are thoughtfully designed for families, with plentiful bunkbeds and split bathrooms so two people can get ready for bed at once. Waiters assist with cutting up food for little cruisers or bringing pureed baby food, and the imaginative kids clubs keep little ones happily occupied when you’re not exploring in port.

Disney Wonder’s weeklong Alaska cruises sail round-trip from Vancouver, so all Americans, even kids, will need passports to fly in to the departure port. The ship visits Juneau, Ketchikan and either Skagway or Icy Strait Point, with glacier viewing at the Stikine Icecap. Seasonal sailings run May to September.

7-night Alaska cruise on Carnival Spirit

Carnival Cruise Line ’s Alaska cruises aboard the 2,124-guest Carnival Spirit might not be the cheapest sailings the line offers, but you get a lot for your money. Families will appreciate not having to pay extra for kid-friendly eats at the onboard pizzeria, Mexican outlet, Guy Fieri’s burger joint and all-day soft serve ice cream station. Comedy shows (both family-friendly and adults-only), an onboard water park, mini-golf and kid, tween and teen clubs are also included in the fare.

Cabins are no-frills but tend to be roomier than comparable cabins on competitors’ ships. Many rooms sleep four, but connecting cabins will get you more space and an extra bathroom while still keeping the family together.

Carnival Spirit spends summers in Alaska from late April to mid-September. It sails round-trip from Seattle and visits Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria, BC, with scenic cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord.

Related: Best time to cruise Alaska

7-night Glacier Bay cruise on Norwegian Encore

Norwegian Cruise Line offers one of the longest cruise seasons in Alaska, and Norwegian Encore is based in the region from April through October each year. This might not help the typical family, but if your kids are young, you homeschool or have atypical breaks, a shoulder-season deal might be waiting for you.

The 3,998-passenger ship is NCL’s biggest, and families will be amazed at how much there is to do on board (though be prepared to pull out your credit card for the best activities). The ship features a laser tag arena, go-kart race track, virtual reality pavilion and water park.

Norwegian is also known for its entertainment, and after a day hiking on glaciers or chowing down at salmon bakes, you can take in the spectacular “Choir of Man,” sing along to the Beatles tribute show at The Cavern Club, or laugh yourself silly at The Social Comedy Club.

Like many of the best Alaska cruises for families, Norwegian Encore sails round-trip from Seattle, stopping in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria. The standout day on this itinerary is scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve , which only a limited number of ships can visit each year. Save more by taking advantage of Free at Sea perks , which often include a free beverage package, Wi-Fi, shore excursion credit, specialty dining and — perfect for families — free third and fourth guests in each cabin.

7-night Voyage of the Glaciers cruise on Royal Princess

Families with a little more vacation time might want to tack a visit to the Alaskan interior before or after their cruise, either independently or with a cruisetour. For this, you’ll need a one-way cruise that begins or ends in an Alaskan port.

A top candidate for this kind of family vacation is a seven-night cruise on Princess Cruises ‘ Royal Princess sailing between Vancouver and Whittier, Alaska. The ship stops in Ketchikan, Juneau and either Skagway or Sitka, with scenic cruising in Glacier Bay and either College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier, depending on the itinerary.

It’s then up to you whether you spend you pre- or post-cruise time in the Kenai Fjord area, in Anchorage or traveling north to Denali National Park, Fairbanks or into the Arctic.

Royal Princess is known for its fan-favorite Alfredo’s pizza, Movies Under the Stars (when the Alaskan weather permits) and snacks and entertainment in the central Piazza. With its special North to Alaska activities, families can cuddle some adorable sled dogs on board the ship and meet Iditarod winners and other notable locals. Kids can become junior rangers with the help of the park rangers who come aboard the ship in Glacier Bay.

7-night Kids in Nature cruise on Wilderness Legacy

Suppose your family isn’t into the big-ship lifestyle and wants a small-ship, off-the-beaten-path experience that’s also geared toward families with kids and teens? In that case, the best family cruise to Alaska for you might be the “Kids in Nature” departures of UnCruise Adventures ’ 86-passenger Wilderness Legacy.

The ship sails round-trip from Juneau on “Glaciers & Wildlife” itineraries. These seven-night cruises include hiking and biking on Chichagof Island, daytime and evening kayak and skift tours in places like Patterson Bay and Robert and Crow Islands, exploring Glacier Bay’s less-visited “Outback” and visits to the LeConte and Baird Glaciers.

On three departure dates in June and July 2024, the Wilderness Legacy will staff up with “Kid Wranglers” who will lead the kid-focused activities. The minimum age to sail is 8 years old, but plenty of tweens and teens join the fun as well.

Bottom line

You no longer have to wait until you’re retired to explore Alaska. Take the kids on a weeklong exploration of the 49th State, and you’ll have plenty of cruise ships and itineraries to choose from. The best Alaska cruises for families combine action-packed itineraries with vessels designed for family fun, but we’re sure your family can find a way to have a great time up north no matter which cruise ship you choose.
