How to Get to the Vancouver Cruise Terminal

Again, the Canada Place Cruise Terminal is located in the heart of downtown Vancouver at the iconic Canada Place convention centre.

If you’re coming from your Vancouver hotel , it’s best to take a Vancouver taxi or either Uber or Lyft.

For those driving to the cruise port from other locations in the city, I’ll be getting into the parking shortly.

Getting to the Cruise Terminal from Vancouver International Airport

Of the best ways to get from Vancouver Airport to the cruise terminal , the Skytrain is quick, easy, and relatively inexpensive.

The Canada Line is the Skytrain route that goes from YVR to downtown Vancouver , and it only takes about 25 minutes.

You can purchase tickets at the Skytrain station at the airport, and the fare is $9.35.

Halifax: what to see and do in this Canadian city during a cruise stopover. Located on the east coast of Canada, on one of the largest natural ports, Halifax is the capital of the province of Nova Scotia and is the largest metropolitan area on the country’s Atlantic coast.

Where the cruise ships dock

The Port of Halifax is very popular for cruises in Canada and New England. The ships dock at piers 20 and 22 near downtown, allowing passengers easy access to the city. Visitors can easily explore the city center on foot or with public transportation, taxis or bicycles that can be rented at the terminal. In the event that there are several ships already in the port, it is possible your ship will dock at moorings that are further away and passengers will then be offered a shuttle service to the terminal.

History of the city

Halifax has a long history as a military post thanks to its strategic position on the eastern coast of Canada. Originally the area was inhabited only by the Mi’kmaq First Nation peoples who still live in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Prince Edwards Islands today. The city was officially founded by the English in 1749 and dedicated to George Montagu-Dunk, the second Earl of Halifax .

The city gained fame after the sinking of the Titanic. In fact, at first it was thought that the damaged Titanic would arrive to Halifax , given that it was the closest port for the ship to reach. In the desperate hours after the sinking, Halifax sent several ships to help to recover the survivors. The city then became the final resting place for many of the passengers. One hundred and fifty bodies were in fact recovered from the Titanic and buried in the three local cemeteries, all with a black granite gravestone. The inscriptions were all the same: April 15, 1912.

Unfortunately, Halifax was also the site of one of the worst maritime disasters in history. On December 6, 1917, in the port of Halifax, a French warship collided with a Norwegian vessel. The explosion killed more than 2,000 people and destroyed the majority of the northern part of the city. From the rubble a new economic and cultural center was built, the Fort Needham Memorial Park, in honor of the memory of the victims of this terrible accident.

Another disaster also happened, this time a tragic incident took place on September 2, 1998 when Swiss Air Flight 111 crashed 5 miles off the coast of Halifax , Nova Scotia. A memorial was erected to the 229 victims who perished that night. Visitors to the monument often leave a rose in front of the memorial stone.

Local food and drinks

Famous for its seafood, you’ll find everything from fish and chips to upscale restaurants spread throughout the city. In Halifax there is no shortage of pubs and clubs, in fact it has more than in any other city in Canada. The Seaport Farmers Market is open every day during the summer months and it is the longest continually operating market in all of North America. It is located on the waterfront and can be reached on foot from the cruise terminal. It is unique for its seafood and baked goods and breads. There are also venders selling lobster rolls, fish soup, kebabs and much more. From the rooftop patio of the market you can enjoy an excellent view of the port.

You can keep on walking and enjoy a stroll along the port on the boardwalk that is 4 km long, one of the longest in the world. Here you will also find Alexander Keith, the oldest brewery in Nova Scotia, just across the boardwalk. The Old Triangle Irish Alehouse is a very popular place that hosts live traditional Irish music.

No visit to Halifax is complete without a taste of donair , the city’s official dish. This delicious snack consists of thin sliced beef with spices, tomatoes and onions served in a grilled pita and drizzled with sweet sauce. You can find donair in the pizza restaurants as well as donuts inspired by donair , poutine and lots more in the city.

There are tons of boutiques and independent retailers in the city center and along the boardwalk. For exclusive Nova Scotia items you’ll need to go into the artisan shops in Pavilion 22 and pick up a rum cake from Rum Runners Rum Cake Factory. Halifax is also known for its mouth-blown and hand-engraved crystal glass. History buffs won’t want to miss a visit to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic . The museum has information on everything from the region’s first shipbuilders, tragic shipwrecks, the city’s involvement in the World Wars, the Halifax explosion and the sinking of the Titanic. Highlights include artifacts from the Titanic, pieces of carved wood found near the wreck, and a beautiful shipwreck-resistant mahogany cabinet.

For those who love art, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is home to a vast collection of local Canadian art. The Gallery is the largest of its kind in all of Eastern Canada, and it has on display modern paintings, photographs, sculptures as well as changing exhibitions featuring international artists.

Saint John, New Brunswick is located on the Bay of Fundy, along Canada's eastern seaboard. This small city is home to about 130,000 residents and embodies Canadian Maritime hospitality, and has more than 400 years worth of French and British influences. Originally a shipbuilding hub primarily due to its ice-free harbor in winter, Saint John continues to thrive in the shipping and fishing industries. The city was virtually destroyed by a fire in 1877, and the Victorian-era rebuilding is still seen throughout Uptown Saint John with its historic churches and brick pathways. Uptown Saint John, where the cruise terminal is located and considered the city center, is home to many unique shops and boutiques, funky art galleries and cafes, and you'll often be serenaded by street musicians with a bohemian flare.

While the city of Saint John has a old-world quality about it, the Bay of Fundy is an attraction in its own right. Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Bay is home to the highest tides in the world. There are more than 100 shops within a 10 minute walk of the terminal. There are also vendors selling artisanal crafts and other goods outside the doors of the terminal.

Getting Around Saint John – New Brunswick

On Foot – Saint John is a very walkable city. There are over 100 shops and restaurants located within a 10 minute walk of the Marco Polo terminal. If that sounds too far, there are a few pubs right across the street.

Taxi – there is a ground transportation kiosk located at the cruise terminals, where they will arrange transportation. Most fares are currently determined by zone but meters are supposed to be added to taxis by 2016.

Car Rental – if you feel like exploring on your own, there is an Avis & Budget car rental location a 4 minute walk from the terminal

Saint John Transit – the city bus offers individual rides for $2.50 per person, but also offers a 2 hour city tour for cruise passengers for $20 per person.

Shopping In Saint John – New Brunswick

There is a wide range of shopping located in Uptown Saint John, not far from the docks. You’ll find everything from a Farmer’s market to contemporary, chic boutiques.

Saint John City Market – Just a few blocks from the cruise terminals, visit this National Historic Site for being the oldest continuing farmer’s market in Canada. Grab a great cup of coffee and stroll the shops before enjoying some of the best fish and chips.

Market Square – Located just a walk up the street from the port, Market Square is unique waterfront shopping, dining and a spot where you’ll often be entertained by talented buskers.

Brunswick Square – Also located in Uptown Saint John, within walking distance of the pier, Brunswick Square is a typical shopping mall, with three levels of national and local shops.

Even if it’s a rainy day when you’re visiting Saint John, all three shopping destinations are connected by an indoor pedestrian walkway.

While Saint John is known most for its fresh and delicious seafood, it also offers some world-class bistros and cafes.

Steamer’s Lobster Co. – located across the street from the pier, this casual restaurant offers seafood platters, sandwiches and soups, but also a few items for “landlubbers.” It also offers dinner theater in the evenings.

Things To Do in Saint John – New Brunswick

Reversing Rapids – see this amazing phenomenon when the Saint John River meets the high tides of the Bay of Fundy. The river reverses its flow twice daily and can be seen from an observation deck high above the gorge or up close from a speed boat.

St. Martins Sea Caves – located 45 minutes from Saint John is the picturesque village of St. Martins best known for the sea caves which are accessible only twice a day when the tide is low. Walk along the ocean floor out to the caves, arches and caverns, which a few hours later will be filled with water when the tide rises.

New Brunswick Museum – if you’re a history buff, you’ll enjoy this informative museum which is located an easy distance from the cruise terminal, in Market Square. Exhibits are spread over three floors and explore the ecology, history and people of New Brunswick, including their extensive involvement in the whaling industry.

Irving Nature Park – located 20 minutes south of Saint John this park offers an ideal spot for nature lovers. See whales and seals from the spectacular Bay of Fundy views, hike along numerous trails or just bring your binoculars and visit the observation deck.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel with a 57-year history of breaking boundaries, launched its 2024 Europe travel season on April 19, 2024 with the arrival of Norwegian Epic to its seasonal homeport of Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy, before embarking on a 10-day Greek Isles and Italy voyage.

During this summer travel season, guests embarking on NCL cruises in Europe will have the opportunity to choose from 101 distinctive itineraries with 38 roundtrips and 63 open-jaw sailings, calling to 140 captivating ports across Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Greek Isles, and the Atlantic Coast.  Additionally, guests can fully explore highlight destinations such as Istanbul, Turkey; Florence (Livorno), Italy and Reykjavik, Iceland with select itineraries offering overnight calls. Cruises will be departing from 13 homeports with New York City; Le Havre (Paris), France; and Oslo, Norway being three brand new options for NCL voyages to Europe.  The Company will have a total of nine ships 1 in region, including its newest innovative vessels, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva , as well as Norwegian Escape , which returns to Europe following its first successful season in 2022.

With an average of 10 hours in port, guests can explore at their leisure or choose from a wide range of shore excursions designed to provide guests with an in-depth experience of each destination. For more immersive experiences, NCL offers a unique collection of shore excursions including, Beyond Blueprints, where guests uncover the design secrets and stories of Europe's most iconic architectural landmarks; Gourmet Tours, designed for the foodie-driven traveler allowing them to go behind the scenes of local cuisines; and Go Local, a selection of excursions inviting guests to unveil the everyday rhythms and customs of life in destinations. Guests aiming to spend even more time in Europe and dive deeper into the rich history of the region can take advantage of NCL's expanding Cruisetours program, a pre- or post-cruise-option that includes roundtrip flights, hotel stays, transportation and excursions. Cruisetours are currently available in 10 European destinations, such as Istanbul, Turkey; Paris, France; Barcelona, Spain; Reykjavik, Iceland; Rome and Venice, Italy, amongst others.

Norwegian Star Sails a Series of Open-Jaw Sailings to Iceland, Greenland and Canada

Norwegian Getaway will homeport in Athens (Piraeus), Greece on June 25 embarking on seven- to 10-day Greek Isles roundtrip itineraries . Norwegian Viva’s Cruises to the Mediterranean

Between May and November 2024, NCL's newest ship, Norwegian Viva, offers guests a selection of nine, 10- and 11-day open-jaw voyages cruising the Mediterranean. Norwegian Escape will be the Company's largest vessel in Europe this season at nearly 165,000 gross tons. The ship will homeport in Barcelona, Spain; Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy; and Trieste (Venice), Italy sailing eight- to 10-day roundtrip sailings in the Western Mediterranean calling to a sun-kissed port each day as well as seven- to 11-day open-jaw sailings with stints in Italy, Greece and France with only one day at sea.

What's better than a boat full of Newfoundlanders? When it's a cruise in the Caribbean

Odd coincidence led to newfoundland takeover of tropical trip.

A gaggle of Newfoundlanders found themselves at home — far, far away from home — after boarding a Caribbean cruise with hundreds of other passengers from the party-loving east coast province.

Pam Pardy noticed a smattering of local sayings upon entering the ship's deck earlier this month, hearing the distinct Newfoundland accent around her as soon as she boarded.

"First when you get on, you go and get your lounge chair. And the girl next to us … dropped her sunglasses, and she goes, 'Oh me glasses, I can't leave they,'" Pardy told CBC News on Tuesday.

"Everybody understood what everybody else was saying. 'Get in the elevator, my ducky!' Usually everybody's avoiding eye contact, waiting for you to get the next one."

About 500 Newfoundlanders ended up together on the Celebrity Apex, which left Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on April 6.

"From what I understand, it was just a total fluke," Pardy said.

Pardy booked the trip over a year ago with her family and friends, but noticed around Christmas that she knew an unusual number of people also, by chance, on the same boat.

Posts about the cruise circulated online, until finally Pardy got a call from her travel agent, who told her so many Newfoundlanders had ended up booking the cruise, the company was throwing them their very own party.

Pardy was confident the massive coincidence would lead to a "rollicking good time," she said, laughing.

Mark Hiscock's travel agent also told him they'd be shacking up for the week with a few hundred neighbours (and perhaps some distant relatives). 

He didn't bring his accordion — "I was there to relax," he explained — but ended up singing during the onboard kitchen party, as others walked around the deck playing spoons.

"There was a lady down in the back, she was givin' 'er," Hiscock recalled. 

Besides music and a wild gathering, what happens when you gather 500 Newfoundlanders on the deck of a tropical cruise ship?

"You get a lot of conversations, a lot of connections," said Darrin Feehan. "Running into old friends. It was almost like a high school reunion."

Pardy said meeting people from the rest of the world was also a blast — but she's already asking her travel agent if a Newfoundlander-packed cruise might be on the books next year.

"Let's see if we can spread the word and this can happen, because this was a lot of fun," she said.

"When you're on the islands and you're expecting island music, and you hear, 'Any Newfoundlanders here tonight?' That's incredible."
