New Volkswagen Polo 2014 review

Changes are mainly under the skin for new 2014 volkswagen polo, with extra equipment and new engines.

The smartest-looking supermini just got smarter with the addition of some enhanced safety equipment and connectivity and interface options from the world of smartphones. It’s all as neatly packaged as ever, and while it’s not as much fun on the road as some it’s difficult to fault. Spend the extra on the 74bhp unit, though, and it’s enough to transform this from a three-star to a four-star car.

This is a new Volkswagen Polo , but it’s more of the same if the styling is anything to go by, VW’s refresh of its supermini contender a bit on the conservative side. Styling changes limited to the grille, lights and the bumpers, though even these are pretty difficult to spot. Good looking as ever, then.

What is significant is Volkswagen’s work underneath that new, if familiar, body. The engine range has been extensively re-engineered, the Polo as fresh-breathed as it comes with its EU6 emissions compliant engines, the fuel efficiency gains as much as 23 per cent over its predecessors.

The line-up consists of a pair of three-cylinder petrol MPI units of 59bhp or 74bhp, two 1.2 TSI four-cylinder petrol choices of 89bhp or 108bhp, a 1.4 TSI with 148bhp and a pair of three-cylinder 1.4 TDI units with 74bhp and 89bhp.

It’s not just under the bonnet where the Polo has been tweaked, the ‘new’ car featuring a far more comprehensive equipment list as standard. All come with a ESC electronic stability control, Hill Hold and Automatic Post-Collision Braking System to increase safety, while optionally the Polo is offered with a driver alert system, adaptive cruise control with front assist and city emergency braking.

It’s the infotainment enhancements that’ll appeal most though, every Polo now coming with Volkswagen’s latest modular touchscreen with proximity sensor. It reacts to swiping movements like your smartphone and offers plenty of connectivity options, apps, DAB radio, USB and Bluetooth. SE spec gains a bigger 6.5-inch version of the screen - over the 5-inch one in S trim - while it’s possible to option sat nav for a further £700.

That SE specification is anticipated to be the biggest seller in the UK, mated with the entry-level 1.0-litre MPI petrol engine in the five-door body. For a three-cylinder unit it’s surprisingly smooth, its enthusiasm for revs not really matched by any corresponding increase in pace on the road. Its performance is adequate around town, but out of it you’ll be busy with the five-speed gearbox and overtakes will be fraught, long-drawn out affairs.

cruise control polo 2014

Refinement levels are superb, the Polo’s interior typically solidly built and clearly defined, the changes, like the exterior, being very subtle. That big touchscreen works well, while the additional option of a £150 ‘MirrorLinkTM’ allows it to display exactly the content of your mobile phone on the screen - with the obvious exception of video channels like YouTube .

Plenty distractions inside then, though not really enough to hide the 59bhp’s relative shortcomings in performance, nor the gearshift’s less than accurate movement. It’s fine, though if you’re after fun then there’s better choices out there, the Ford Fiesta for example.

That doesn’t really change with the 74bhp version of the same engine, but despite its small incremental on-paper performance increases - it only dropping a second off the 59bhp car’s time to 62mph - but it feels significantly quicker in reality.

The economy penalty is all but non-existent, too. In either the steering remains fairly inert, though VW’s sensible lack of sporting pretensions with the suspension does mean it rides nicely enough, the trade off being some roll in the bends.

Keep it sensible, as buyers will and the Polo is as brilliantly conservative, effortlessly classy and beautifully built as ever, only now more economical and better equipped as standard.

Malcolm Flynn

The Mk5 Volkswagen Polo took a few leaves out of its Mk6 Golf sibling's book when it arrived in Australia in 2010, bringing surprising levels of refinement, technology and efficiency to the highly competitive light hatch segment.

Four years on, the Polo has the even-better Mk7 Golf to draw on for its mid-cycle facelift, with new drivetrain, safety and interior technologies along with subtly tweaked styling and a streamlined model lineup.

The biggest news for the new model is drive-away pricing to help introduce the range. Continuing with the Trendline and Comfortline trim levels, the entry Trendline manual now kicks off at $15,990 drive-away, with a $16,290 list price some $700 less than before.

Drive-away pricing will be applied across the lineup for the first three months (or while stocks last) of the new model’s life, but VW are yet to announce the ‘no more to pay’ figures for the rest of the range.

Comfortline list pricing has been cut by $950, now starting at $18,290 and the DSG dual-clutch auto still commands its standard $2500 premium on either trim level.

The Trendline comes with the five inch touchscreen display with SD card, USB and Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, plus cruise control, a height-adjustable driver’s seat and rake and reach adjustable steering.

The Comfortline adds extra chrome trim to the nose, 15-inch alloys, a Think Blue. Trainer efficiency coach function to the display, multifunction controls and leather trim to the steering wheel, heated wing mirrors, aluminium interior details, passenger seat height adjustment and storage pockets on the back of the front seats.

Comfortline models are available with a $1500 optional Driving Comfort Package, which adds a reversing camera, auto headlights, wipers and rearview mirror dimming, adaptive cruise control, auto emergency braking, climate control aircon, tyre pressure monitoring and driver fatigue detection.

Rear parking sensors are available for both models, but are a dealer-fit optional extra.

Comfortline models are also available with the $1500 optional Sport pack, which adds 17 inch alloys, lowered sports suspension, tinted rear windows, front fog and cornering lights, and tyre pressure monitoring.

The 2014 Polo also sees the introduction of several technologies form its Mk7 Golf, but the styling has also been tweaked to bring the Polo in line with its bigger brother. New head and taillights, grille, and front and rear bumpers complete a typically Volkswagen discrete but effective makeover.

The Trendline can be identified by a new hubcap design on 15 inch steel wheels, while the Comfortline gets a new ‘Estrada’ design 15 inch alloy wheel as standard and a new ‘Mirabeau’ design 17 inch wheel with the optional Sport package.

The new Polo also sees three new exterior colours added to the chart, with Pure White, Sunset Red Metallic and Corn Flower Blue joining the existing Deep Black Pearl Effect, Reflex Silver Metallic and Pepper Grey Metallic.

On the inside, the Polo scores the Mk7 Golf’s steering wheel, fresh trim materials plus a revised 3D instrument layout and a new centre stack and controls that incorporate the Golf’s MIB multimedia interface within a five inch touchscreen.

In the back, there are Isofix child-seat mounts for the outward rear positions and a dual-layer boot floor offers a maximum cargo capacity of 280-litres with the seats up, and 952-litres with the seats folded.

All variants come with a full size steel spare wheel aside from the Comfortline Sport, where the same spare is limited to 80km/h due to the Sport’s larger alloys.

ENGINES / TRANMSISSIONS

The previous Trendline’s non-turbo 63kW/132Nm 1.4-litre petrol has been dropped in favour of an all-new 66kW/160Nm 1.2-litre petrol turbo used in low-cost versions of the Golf overseas, and Comfortline models step up from the old 77kW/175Nm 1.2-litre turbo to an 81kW/175Nm version of the same new engine.

Both engines make max torque from just 1400rpm, with the 66kW engine stretching out to 3500rpm, and the 81kW engine promising excellent tractability all the way too 4000rpm.

Gone is the previous  - and expensive -  Comfortline diesel variant, with both new petrol engines coming within 0.2L/100km of the old oiler’s combined fuel figure.

The default transmissions remain a five speed manual in the Trendline and a six-speed manual in the Comfortline, and the seven-speed DSG dual-clutch auto continues as a $2500 option for either trim level.

Combined fuel consumption is now 4.8L/100km for all variants aside from the manual Comfortline which uses just 0.1L/100km more, down from the 5.5-6.1L/100km of the previous Polo.

Both engines continue to require Premium 95RON unleaded, but efficiency is aided by Bluemotion tech like stop/start and a smart alternator that boosts charge efficiency under braking to minimise load under acceleration.

The new Polo continues with the 5 star ANCAP safety rating its predecessor carried since 2010, with six airbags and comprehensive stability control functions, but adds the Multi-Collision braking system from the bigger Golf that automatically applies the brakes after a collision to help prevent secondary impacts.

Any perception that the Mk5 Polo as an ageing design dissolves the moment you sit behind the wheel. The previous model’s premium feel has been improved with the excellent steering wheel from the Mk7 Golf. Comfortline variants get soft leather and gloss black detailing, but the Trendline’s plastic tiller still fits well in your hand with a surprisingly pleasant texture.

The rest of the interior may still lack the exciting shapes and colours of the Renault Clio, but there’s a quality and maturity to the materials used that would trouble several more expensive models.

The five inch MIB touchscreen fitted to both trim levels is a touch small by current industry standards, but still acceptable for the Polo’s class where such screens are still a rarity.

It’s a shame the reversing camera cannot be specified individually, but the Driving Comfort Package it’s comprised within is worth considering.

It is also impressive that adaptive cruise control and its associated safety features have filtered down to a mainstream light hatch like the Polo.

Rolling into traffic in either of the 15 inch wheeled Trendline and Comfortline variants, the suspension’s low-speed compliance is a surprise in such a lightweight mainstream model, and this chassis refinement does not deteriorate with speed.

The 17 inch wheels and lower sports suspension of the Comfortline Sport pack do detract from this refinement slightly, but is still significantly smoother than the previous GTI variant fitted with the same sized wheel and tyre combo.

Like the Golf, the new Polo balances ride and handling exceptionally well, and the Polo’s torsion beam rear suspension is rarely troubled by mid-corner bumps.

The new Polo also adopts the Mk7 Golf’s excellent electromechanical steering system, replacing the previous model’s electrohydraulic setup, and the new-generation system delivers the expected similar results.

The steering is light regardless of speed, but offers good feel through corners and reacts well to swift steering movements.

Cabin noise suppression around town is excellent for the segment, but we found a degree of wind rustle around the door mirrors at highway speeds, and the 15 inch Continental Premium Contact 2 tyres fitted to both trim levels as standard tended to grumble over coarse chip rural roads.

Cabin ambience is also aided by the smoother and quieter new 1.2-litre engine, which is a responsive little unit in either power level, and their broad torque bands make gear selection far less critical than you’d expect for such a small engine.

They may require Premium unleaded, but the 1.2 litre units in the Polo are perhaps the most effective examples of VW’s reduced displacement strategy to date. Compared with the previous non-turbo 1.4 and turbo 1.2, they deliver better outputs and efficiency, and are equally easier to extract the best out of them.

This driveability helps to mask the Trendline manual’s ratio deficit compared with the six-speed Comfortline, and the seven-speed DSG dual-clutch autos work well with the smaller engine.

With two passengers aboard, both engines handled highway speeds and hills surprisingly well during VW’s local launch event, but the Comfortline’s extra 15kW and 15Nm would likely be more handy with a full load.

The new VW Polo has had a healthy injection of Mk7 Golf magic, and with impressive value, technology and efficiency, it certainly deserves a look if you’re in the market for a light hatch.

For an extra $2000, the Comfortline’s extra spec and output would get our vote if your budget stretches that far. However,  the Trendline with the $15,990 drive-away introductory pricing is a mighty fine machine for the money.

Volkswagen Polo 2014 Review

Volkswagen Polo 66 TSI Trendline and Polo 81 TSI Comfortline Road Test

Volkswagen's light segment hatchback, the Polo, is a car of real substance. Five-star NCAP-tested safety, sub-5.0L/100km fuel economy, affordable pricing and enough kit in even base-grade form to sink a battleship are all points in the VW's favour. And the Polo is a car that doesn't define its driver by type, meaning anyone can get behind the wheel without feeling emasculated or retro-teenaged. But how does it compare with the larger, very accomplished Golf? The new Volkswagen Polo is priced from $16,290 (plus on-road costs).

It's official, the young 'uns are now too big for the rear of a Volkswagen Polo . The teenager and the 12-year old have both fallen asleep in the back of a Golf 7 in the past, such was that car's roominess, ride comfort and NVH suppression.

That was never likely to happen in the smaller Polo, however, in either 66kW Trendline form, or the more powerful 81kW Comfortline variant. But the light hatch remains a strong contender for younger families in the market for a car that is safe but frugal, and comfortable but dynamically capable.

The more expensive Polo Comfortline came to us with the optional Sports Package, which was a $1500 impost I would think long and hard about ordering. A combination of 17-inch alloys and lowered suspension sharpened the ride, in conflict with the compliance buyers typically want from a light hatch. Want to 'track' a Polo? Get the GTI.

Nevertheless, the level of body control exhibited by the up-spec Polo Comfortline was exemplary; the Polo handled flatly and turned in to corners adeptly. Get the line right and the little VW would nose right over to the inside of the bend – and stay there with the power applied. The Polo offered surefooted grip and poise changing direction. And while the steering was initially very light, it was also quite communicative.

The 66kW Trendline tested the following week – without the Sports Package – would be my choice, however. On its 15-inch tyres the Polo Trendline still handled neutrally on a trailing throttle and front-end grip was commendable with power applied. It's just that the car's dynamics paled somewhat in comparison with the optioned-up Polo Comfortline.

In a straight line the Polo Trendline gave away little in performance, despite its 15kW power deficit. Where the difference in performance was noticed came higher in the rev range. While the 81kW engine would spin freely and reach its redline quickly – forcing an upshift mid-corner, for example – the 66kW engine would take a while to spool up the last 1000rpm on the way to its 6500rpm maximum. Furthermore, the lesser engine sounded strained and didn't encourage being flogged as hard.

For a 1.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, the Polo's 81kW powerplant was a lot more charismatic than expected. At low revs and under light loads it emitted a nice little burble, but then let loose an angry wail with throttle opened up and the tacho needle climbing past 6000rpm. The 66kW engine was slightly more pedestrian by comparison, but was still refined around-town and sounded sportier than many light hatches.

The lower-priced Polo Trendline was noisier at open-road speeds, but it wasn't a deal breaker against other, similarly-priced light hatches. The turbo can be occasionally heard working on the overrun, and the patter of rain on the roof was obvious.

Fuel consumption around town was usually below 7.0L/100km – during school holidays, admittedly. According to the Polo Comfortline's trip computer, the long-term average was 7.3L/100km, which I have no doubt could be improved by owners, as opposed to those speed-crazed fiends of the fourth estate.

Both engines were coupled to the optional seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG), which changed gear smoothly and promptly, but with very distinct steps between changes – more like a manual box in character, than an epicyclic auto. Unlike DSG boxes of the past, this one didn't thump, thud or clunk. There was a brief moment in the Polo Trendline when the car sat for what felt like an extra second gathering its thoughts before releasing torque to the drive wheels for a standing start.

At times the DSG on both cars would make up its own mind when to shift a gear, but the transmission was also intelligent enough to recognise that when you tip the lever forward as the engine approaches redline that you only need one upshift... not two.

A hill-hold facility ensured the Polo wouldn't roll back from a standing start, even if the engine was 'auto-stopped'. One problem with the system was that the brakes were slow to release at the lights. There was a sensation of drag and snatch as the brakes eased off with the engine powered up.

It was worse still in the Polo Trendline tested a week later. And unfortunately, the hill-hold facility doesn't work in reverse. Backing across the crown of a road into a driveway, the Polo would roll forward into the gutter on the other side if the driver wasn't quick enough on the accelerator.

From a packaging standpoint, the driving position was fine in both cars. Moderately firm seat cushioning was complemented by the shape of the seat itself. In the rear, adults or teens of average size or taller will need to adjust the headrests up away from their shoulders for the sake of comfort. Otherwise the headroom there was good, and kneeroom was adequate. Given the Polo is a light car, it would be wrong to expect much more than 'adequate' in that context.

The fully-lined boot would accommodate a weekly load of grocery shopping for a nuclear family, and the loading lip was nice and low for target buyers. Volkswagen, following decades of design practice worked out for the larger Golf, has set up the open tailgate to be within easy reach of shorter users also. The Polo was well put together and the doors closed securely and solidly, but without any need for slamming.

Volkswagen's interior designers have delivered a generally sensible layout for instruments and controls, although there were a few ergonomically unsound items. The knob to adjust mirrors operated in a horizontal plane for vertical movement of the mirror, and vice versa. In other words, push forward for the mirror to tilt up, or push down to pan inboard.

The footrest was too narrow to fit my entire left foot, and I found that to start the car, the ignition key needed to be turned further around in the barrel than was entirely comfortable for the wrist.

Other than those niggles, the Polo's design was functional and easy to use. Instruments were legible, although there was no temperature gauge in the Polo Trendline's instrument binnacle.

What was also missed in the Polo Trendline was the multi-function steering wheel, with its audio controls, and the optional Driving Comfort Package that cost $1500 extra in the Polo Comfortline. This pack included climate control, adaptive cruise control (with AEB), reversing camera and automatic headlights.

Since that pack can't be ordered with the Polo Trendline, opt for the Polo Comfortline, if the budget stretches that far. Don't spend the extra $1500 on the Sports package, however, as mentioned before. In addition to the 17-inch alloys and the lowered suspension, it includes static-cornering front fog lights.

Polo Comfortline's climate control kept the cabin comfortable, but the fan simply didn't provide enough air flow unless cranked up to the max. The manual air conditioning in the Polo Trendline was easier to adjust and delivered enough cooling or heating without the fan being turned past the second speed.

From having driven both cars now, I found the Polo didn't seem to be the game-changer the superseded model was on release back in 2009. But it's still a car you should have on your shopping list.

Volkswagen Polo 81 TSI and 66 TSI Comfortline pricing and specifications: Price: $24,290 Comfortline, $19,290 Trendline (as tested, plus on-road costs) Engine: 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol Output: 81kW/175Nm (Comfortline), 66kW/160Nm (Trendline) Transmission: Seven-speed dual-clutch Fuel: 4.8L/100km (ADR Combined) CO2: 113 g/km Comfortline, 112g/km Trendline (ADR Combined) Safety Rating: Five-star (ANCAP)

It reduces the stress on drivers and offers you more comfort on long journeys by keeping the vehicle at a constant speed. It's particularly effective when you have to stay within speed limits for a long way - when driving through miles of roadworks on the motorway, for example - and cuts the risk of your speed creeping up by accident.

The system works by memorising and maintaining the speed you select. It's very flexible, too. You can increase or reduce speed manually - to a defined value - and you also have the option of returning to the speed most recently memorised.

The cruise control system can be turned off simply by pressing a button or by pressing the brake or clutch pedals. For safety reasons, the cruise control system should not be used in heavy traffic or in difficult road conditions, such as heavy rain or ice.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Volkswagen ’s safe distance technology ..

cruise control polo 2014

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) helps to avoid accidents by always keeping your car at a safe distance from the traffic ahead.

Working together with the radar-controlled Front Assist traffic monitoring system, our adaptive cruise control system keeps you at a safe distance from the vehicle in front, making driving much easier - whether on motor way journeys or in slow and moving traffic.

As with cruise control, you set the speed at which you want your car to maintain. This is then further enhanced by being equipped with the safe-distance technology using a radar sensor, which modulates your speed based on traffic conditions. The system detects traffic slowing ahead and automatically reduces your speed to match and maintain an appropriate gap to the car in front. If necessary, the system will bring your car to a complete stop.

It does this with the help of the Front Assist system which primes the brakes if it senses a collision is likely, shortening the stopping distance when the driver hits the brake pedal.

How it works

The safe-distance technology 's radar sensor has a range of up to 200 metres and a beam angle of 12 degrees. The radar sensor and control unit are combined into a single unit which is located at the front of the car.

Using the signals from the radar sensor, the control unit computes the distance to the vehicle ahead and your car's speed relative to it. It also works out its lateral position on multi-lane roads. If there are several vehicles within the sensor's field of coverage at the same time, this information is used to select which of the vehicles the system should track. The radar sensor is not capable of detecting stationary obstructions, such as the end of a tailback or crash barriers, however.

If approaching a slower vehicle ahead or if another vehicle cuts in front of you, the adaptive cruise control slows down the car by initiating corrective controls in the engine management and, if necessary, in the braking system too. If the required rate of deceleration exceeds 30% of the vehicle's maximum stopping power, visual and audible warning signals will prompt the driver to apply the brakes manually.

Adaptive Cruise Control V1.5

In addition to the standard Adaptive Cruise Control, this version has a greater operating range of speeds between 0 -130mph.

Adaptive Cruise Control with Predictive Cruise Control

In addition to the above, this updated version of ACC includes:

Road recognition - using information from front and rear cameras and route information, your vehicle will predictively adjust its speed prior to junctions and bends.

Speed Assist - using both the front camera and route information identifies changes in the posted speed limit and automatically adjusts the vehicles speed.

Volkswagen Cars w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (All 11 Models)

Adaptive cruise control has been available mostly in luxury vehicles but is now common in many mainstream cars, including Volkswagens.

The Volkswagen cars, SUVs, and EVs in this post have adaptive cruise control or conventional cruise control system.

Check the corresponding tables to see the relevant model years when the system became available.

volkswagen

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The more-basic cruise control in older Volkswagen cars helps the vehicle maintain a steady cruising speed.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional cruise control system by adjusting the car’s speed to match the vehicle ahead, slowing or accelerating to the set speed when appropriate.

Newer Volkswagens have the IQ Drive technology that automatically maintains a set distance from the vehicle ahead, with the ability to brake on its own to avoid a potential collision.

Rival mainstream car makers that produce popular models with adaptive cruise control (ACC) include:

  • Toyota vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Honda vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Nissan vehicles with ACC .
  • Ford vehicles with ACC .

Volkswagen Cars with Adaptive Cruise Control

#1 volkswagen golf.

Although it’s no longer in production after 2021, the Golf hatchback remains a compelling purchase as a used car, with its excellent ride quality and versatile body – even the more-powerful Golf R is a competent daily driver .

All Volkswagen Golf models from 2003 to 2021 had standard cruise control that enabled a steady highway cruising speed.

Only in 2002 when the system first became available was cruise control not available at all trim levels.

#2 Volkswagen Polo

Although the VW Polo isn’t available on American shores, it’s a popular little car sold globally in Europe and many other countries.

Except for the latest generation that debuted in 2022, Volkwagen Polos from 2009 to 2021 had cruise control in the pricier variants, and all pre-2009 models only had the system as an optional add-on.

#3 Volkswagen Beetle

The discontinued Volkswagen Beetle had cruise control as a standard provision from 2012 to 2019.

#4 Volkswagen Jetta

In a class with all-stars like Honda Civic , Toyota Corolla , Hyundai Elantra , and Kia Forte – all with adaptive cruise control – the VW Jetta seems somewhat mediocre.

Still, from 2019 onwards, Volkswagen Jettas have had adaptive cruise control (ACC) in their higher trims and the more-basic cruise control in the lower ones.

Cruise control is standard across all Volkswagen Jettas from 2003 to 2018, with the 2001 and 2002 models only having the system in the more-expensive trims.

#5 Volkswagen Passat

2021 and 2022 Volkswagen Passat sedans have standard adaptive cruise control, while models from 2016 to 2020 only had the system in the higher trims.

Cruise control is standard across all Volkswagen Passat from 2001 to 2015, and older models before that period do not have the cruise management system.

2022 marks this midsize car’s final model year stateside.

#6 Volkswagen Arteon

This 2019 debutant is a unique large hatchback with sleek styling and sporty handling.

All Volkswagen Arteon models have at least the basic cruise control system, with the higher trims carrying the more-sophisticated adaptive cruise control (ACC) before ACC became standard from 2022 onwards.

Volkswagen SUVs with Adaptive Cruise Control

#7 volkswagen taos.

Since its introduction in 2022, the Volkswagen Taos subcompact SUV has had adaptive cruise control in the upper trims and cruise control in the lower ones.

#8 Volkswagen Tiguan

This model stands out among small SUVs with its three rows of seats.

Volkswagen Tiguans from 2018 onwards have had adaptive cruise control or cruise control, depending on the trim level.

All VW Tiguan models from 2009 to 2017 had standard cruise control.

#9 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

This SUV is a two-row version of the VW Atlas.

Since its 2020 debut, the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport has had adaptive cruise control in the upper trims and conventional cruise control in the lower ones.

#10 Volkswagen Atlas

This SUV is a three-row midsize, seating up to seven.

Like the two-row variant, the Volkswagen Atlas with an extra row of seats has cruise control in the base trim and the more sophisticated adaptive cruise control in the costlier ones.

Volkswagen Electric Vehicle with Adaptive Cruise Control

#11 volkswagen id.4.

As the German marque’s pioneering electric SUV, Volkswagen ID.4 models have adaptive cruise control with lane centering across all trim levels.

The wires are not in place to do it by stalks. The dealer has to get a license key to enable the option. It was not expensive so just let them do it..

Be very careful what firmware you flash. 2Q0 radars are notoriously difficult to hack. If you upload incorrect firmware to it initially, it will never change the public key correctly. I'll send you PM. Also you're not able to go back on the firmware anymore so the unit is gone for good.

  • Beschrijving

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Cool Cruiser

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Ukraine war latest: Ukraine 'destroys Russian Black Sea minesweeper'

Ukraine's navy says it has destroyed a Russian Black Sea fleet minesweeper. Meanwhile, an attack on a residential area in Kharkiv left six civilians injured - with Ukraine saying it is investigating the bombing as a potential war crime.

We're pausing our coverage of the Ukraine war for the moment.

Scroll through the blog below to catch up on today's developments.

Russian forces likely intend to launch the second phase of their offensive following their anticipated seizure of Vovchansk, three miles from the Russian border, according to the latest analysis from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said yesterday that Russian forces advanced between five and 10 kilometres in the northern Kharkiv region before Ukrainian forces stopped Russian advances.

The ISW says Russian forces are currently prioritising the seizure of Vovchansk because it is likely one of the remaining tactical objectives of the first phase, noting it is the largest settlement immediately on the border that would provide Russian forces with a staging ground to prepare for and launch the second phase.

The Russian objectives of the second phase are not yet clear, the ISW says. It could be to expand the "buffer zone" further in width along the border, or to advance closer to Kharkiv city.

Russian forces have also recently intensified efforts to seize the operationally significant town of Chasiv Yar, the ISW says, seeking to exploit the pressure on stretched Ukrainian forces.

The number of people killed in Russian strikes on a Kharkiv recreation area has risen from five to six, with an employee of the resort still unaccounted for.

At least 27 people were injured in the two airstrikes, which came about 20 minutes apart, according to an update from the Kharkiv regional prosecutor's office on Telegram.

The missing employee was fishing by a reservoir when the attack happened, the update said.

Two police officers are among the injured, it added.

The UK's defence secretary has confirmed the military aid that has been "rushed" to Ukraine.

Grant Shapps said the "world cannot wait" as he urged nations to "step up" and support Kyiv's fight against Russia.

Among the items sent by the UK are 80 defence missiles, one million rounds of ammunition and 20 Viking amphibious protected vehicles.

Mr Shapps' tweet comes after he urged allies to give permission to Ukraine to use the weapons they have supplied against targets in Russian-annexed Crimea.

"We have been very, very clear with the world and helpful to Ukraine - for example, providing permissions for our weapons to be used throughout the whole of Ukraine ... that includes Crimea, which was taken by Putin in 2014," he told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg:

"Now, we do not get into how we would allow targeting with our weapons to be used outside of that. But we do provide our weapons to Ukraine in order for them to defend their country."

Pressed on Volodymyr Zelensky's calls for weapons to be available for strikes inside Russia, Mr Shapps said: "I can't go into the specifics of those private conversations about how the weapons are precisely used."

Finland will propose a law that would see it turn back migrants to Russia without processing their asylum applications - despite this potentially breaching its international human rights commitments.

Finland shut its border with Russia last year to stop a growing number of arrivals from countries including Syria and Somalia.

It accused Moscow of weaponising migration against Finland and the European Union, an assertion the Kremlin denies.

"As this phenomenon is in Russia's hands - who comes, where from and when, to Finland's border - we cannot permit it," Prime Minister Petteri Orpo told reporters.

"Therefore we have to augment our legislation."

The bill would allow border authorities to turn back asylum seekers who cross from Russia, with or without using force. But it would not apply to children and disabled people.

The proposal will go to parliament next week, where it will be submitted to the constitutional committee for review. It will need five-sixths of votes cast in parliament to pass - the high bar required for constitutional matters - and success is not certain.

The General Staff of Ukraine's armed forces have published their daily operational update...

It says "intense" fighting is ongoing along almost the entire frontline, with 78 "combat clashes" already today, compared to 110 for the entirety of yesterday.

The Russian forces became increasingly active on the Kharkiv front, with seven clashes reported so far today.

The situation in Kharkiv is "dynamic", it says, with Russian troops trying to push back the Ukrainian units near Vovchansk, Starytsia and Lyptsi.

Russia said on Saturday its forces had captured the village of Starytsia, bringing the total number of villages it has taken in the Kharkiv region to 13.

Russia has been pushing ahead with a ground offensive in recent days that opened a new front in northeastern Ukraine's Kharkiv region and put further pressure on Kyiv's overstretched military.

Russian forces have also increased their activity on the Siversk front and are attempting to break through Ukrainian defences in Bilohorivka, Verkhnokamianske and Rozdolivka, the update says.

Oleksandr Usyk defeated British boxing star Tyson Fury to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world on Saturday night.

But Fury says the outcome was down to the Ukraine war.

He disputed his loss after the match, saying: "I believe I won that fight. I think he won a few rounds but I won the majority of them.

"His country is at war, so people are siding with the country at war. Make no mistake, I won that fight in my opinion."

In response, Ukrainian Usyk said he was "ready for rematch," but later added: "I don't think about rematch now, I want to rest."

After today's attacks President Volodymyr Zelenskyy again called on Western allies to supply Kyiv with additional air defence systems to protect Kharkiv and other cities.

He said there were reports "every hour" of fresh attacks.

"Missiles, bombs, artillery are the only things that allow Russia to continue its aggression," he said on Telegram.

"The world can stop Russian terror - and to do so, the lack of political will among leaders must be overcome."

"Two Patriots for Kharkiv will make a fundamental difference," he said, referring to Patriot missile defence systems.

Air defence systems for other cities and sufficient support for soldiers on the front line would ensure Russia's defeat, the president added.

This morning, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said the delay in giving aid to Ukraine gave Russia a window of opportunity for its new offensive.

Five people have died in strikes on two villages in the Kupiansk district in Kharkiv, local officials say.

It brings the number of people killed in the Kharkiv region today to 10, after five people died in strikes on a recreation area in a northern suburb of the city of Kharkiv.

Local governor Oleh Syniehubov said Russian forces shelled two villages with a self-propelled multiple rocket launcher.

At least nine people were injured in the attacks.

We're getting photos of the aftermath of strikes on a recreation area just outside Kharkiv which killed five people and left at least 16 injured.

The pictures show a lakeside resort, where shortly before the attacks local residents were "resting, enjoying a normal way of life", according to a local police inspector (see our 11.54 post).

Parademics and police tend to the wounded, but were also caught up in the second strike, which came about 20 minutes after the first.

These are known as "double tap" strikes, which kill or injure emergency workers at the scene of strike impacts.

Here are the latest photos from the scene...
